Having support vehicles and a knowledgeable guide can enhance safety during the tour. Remember to contact us for specific advice and guidelines tailored to your Tibet bike tour.

Tibet bike tours can vary in difficulty, and not all routes may be suitable for all levels of cyclists. The challenging terrain, high altitude, and long distances involved in some routes make them more suitable for experienced cyclists with good physical fitness and endurance.

However, there are also Tibet bike tours available that cater to cyclists of different skill levels . Some routes may have less challenging terrain, shorter distances, and options for vehicle support or shorter cycling segments. These tours are designed to accommodate beginners or cyclists who prefer a more leisurely pace, such as  6 days Tibet Bike Tour from Lhasa to Ganden Monastery, 8 days Tibet Cycling Tour  from Lhasa to Namtso Lake.

It's important to research and choose a  Tibet bike tour that aligns with your cycling abilities and fitness level. Consider factors such as the elevation gain, daily mileage, road conditions, and altitude challenges before deciding on a tour. Consulting with a reputable tour operator can provide valuable insights and guidance in selecting a suitable Tibet bike tour based on your abilities and preferences.

Yes, as a foreign tourist, you are required to obtain a Tibet Travel Permit  (TTP) to visit Tibet for a bike tour. The TTP is a necessary document issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau and is a prerequisite for entering and traveling within Tibet.

To obtain the Tibet Travel Permit, you cannot apply for it individually. Instead, you must book your Tibet bike tour through a registered tour operator in Tibet like AOT Team . The tour operator will assist in arranging the necessary permits on your behalf as part of the tour package.

It's important to note that the TTP only allows you to visit certain regions in Tibet , and additional permits may be required to access certain restricted areas or specific attractions. Your tour operator will handle the permit application process and ensure that you have the appropriate permits for your  bike tour in Tibet .

The best time of year to go on a Tibet bike tour is during the  summer months , from May to September. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions and relatively stable road conditions, making it an ideal time for cycling adventures in Tibet.

During the summer, temperatures in Tibet are generally milder, with pleasant daytime temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius  (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit) in most areas. The weather is usually drier, and there is less chance of encountering snow or ice on the roads, especially at higher altitudes.

It's important to note that even during the summer months, Tibet's high altitude can still result in cooler temperatures, especially in the early morning and evening. Therefore, it's advisable to pack appropriate layers of clothing to adjust to temperature variations throughout the day.

While summer is considered the best time for a Tibet bike tour, it is also the peak tourist season. As a result, popular tourist sites and accommodations may be more crowded. If you prefer a quieter experience, you could consider traveling in the shoulder seasons of late spring (April) or early autumn (October) when the weather can still be pleasant, but with fewer tourists.

It's essential to research and plan your Tibet bike tour according to your preferences, fitness level, and the specific route you intend to take, as weather conditions can vary across different regions of Tibet . Consulting with a reputable tour operator can provide further guidance on selecting the optimal time for your bike tour based on your specific needs and interests.

Tibet bike tours can be physically challenging due to several factors, such as high altitude, mountainous terrain, and long distances. The high altitude is one of the primary challenges as it can affect your body's ability to acclimatize and impact your cycling performance. Altitude sickness symptoms, including shortness of breath, fatigue, and headache, can make cycling more physically demanding.

Moreover, Tibet 's mountainous terrain means there will be steep ascents and descents, requiring a good level of cardiovascular fitness and leg strength. The roads can be rugged and uneven in some areas, adding to the physical demands of the tour.

The long distances covered during the bike tour also contribute to the physical challenge. It's important to have the endurance and stamina to sustain long hours of cycling each day. Training and preparing your body for extended periods of cycling before the tour will help improve your overall fitness and make the experience more enjoyable.

It's worth noting that the physical challenge of a Tibet bike tour can vary depending on the specific route and itinerary you choose. Some routes may be more accessible for cyclists of different fitness levels, while others may be more demanding and suitable for experienced riders.

If you're considering a Tibet bike tour, it's essential to assess your fitness level honestly and prepare accordingly. Gradually increasing your cycling distance and intensity, incorporating strength and endurance training, and acclimatizing to high altitudes prior to the tour can help you better cope with the physical challenges of cycling in Tibet.

It is generally recommended to bring your own bike for a Tibet bike tour if possible. Riding a bike that you are already familiar with and comfortable on can enhance your overall experience during the tour. You are accustomed to its fit, handling, and performance, which can contribute to a more enjoyable and efficient ride.

Bringing your own bike also allows you to have control over its quality and condition. You can ensure that it is well-maintained, properly fitted to your body, and equipped with any specific accessories or modifications you prefer for long-distance cycling.

However, if bringing your own bike is not feasible due to logistical reasons or if you prefer to travel light, some tour operators in Tibet may provide rental bikes as part of their tour packages. In such cases, it's important to inquire about the quality, type, and availability of rental bikes in advance. Ensure that the rental bikes are suitable for the terrain and distances you will be covering during the tour.

Regardless of whether you bring your own bike or opt for a rental, it's advisable to have a thorough bike check-up before the tour. Ensure that all components are in good working condition, tires are properly inflated, brakes are responsive, and gears are smooth. Carry essential repair tools and spare parts to handle minor mechanical issues that may arise during the tour.

Consulting with your tour operator can provide more specific guidance on whether you should bring your own bike or explore rental options based on the nature of the tour and available resources.

Yes, many Tibet bike tour operators (such as AOT) provide support vehicles as part of their tour packages. These support vehicles are typically equipped to carry luggage, spare parts, and supplies, and they can also serve as a means of assistance in case of emergencies or if you need a break from cycling.

Support vehicles can be beneficial in several ways:

  • Luggage Transport: The support vehicle can carry your luggage, relieving you from the burden of carrying heavy bags on your bike. This allows you to enjoy the cycling experience without the added weight on your back or bike.
  • Assistance and Safety: The support vehicle can offer assistance if you encounter mechanical issues with your bike or need medical attention. In case of fatigue, injury, or illness, you can take a break and ride in the support vehicle for a portion of the route.
  • Supplies and Refreshments :The support vehicle can carry extra water, snacks, and other supplies, ensuring you have access to necessary provisions during the tour. This is particularly useful in remote areas where resources might be limited.
  • Resting and Shelter: In case of inclement weather or if you need a rest, the support vehicle can provide shelter and a place to rest while you wait for improved conditions or regain your energy.

Yes, there are accommodations available along the bike tour routes in Tibet . The specific types of accommodations can vary depending on the region and route you choose, ranging from basic guesthouses and hostels to mid-range hotels and even luxury resorts in some areas.

In more developed and popular tourist destinations like Lhasa , Shigatse, and Gyantse, you can find a wider range of accommodation options, including hotels with various amenities and services.

However, in more remote and less touristy areas, the accommodation options might be limited to simpler guesthouses or local lodges. These accommodations may offer basic facilities but can still provide a comfortable and authentic experience.

When planning your Tibet bike tour, it's important to consider the distance between accommodations along your chosen route. Some routes may have longer distances between towns or villages, so it's necessary to plan your itinerary accordingly and ensure you have accommodations available at suitable intervals.

Working with a reputable tour operator experienced in organizing Tibet bike tours can be helpful in arranging accommodations along the route. They will have knowledge of the available accommodations, their quality, and can make appropriate reservations based on your preferences and budget.

It's advisable to book your accommodations in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, to secure your preferred options and avoid any last-minute availability issues.

Keep in mind that the facilities and amenities in Tibetan accommodations may differ from those in more urbanized areas, so it's important to set realistic expectations and be prepared for a unique cultural experience during your stay.

Yes, there are several cultural considerations to keep in mind during a Tibet bike tour. Tibet has a rich and distinct cultural heritage, and respecting local customs and traditions is important to ensure a positive and respectful experience. Here are some key cultural considerations to keep in mind:

  • Respect for Buddhism: Tibet is deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, and it's important to show respect for religious sites, monasteries, and practices. Dress modestly and appropriately when visiting religious sites, and follow any specific guidelines or instructions provided by the authorities or local guides.
  • Tibetan Customs and Etiquette: Familiarize yourself with basic Tibetan customs and etiquette. Greet locals with a friendly "Tashi Delek" (meaning hello) and be polite and courteous in your interactions. Seek permission before taking photographs of people, especially monks or religious ceremonies.
  • Environmental Respect: Tibet's pristine natural environment is highly valued, and it's crucial to be mindful of your impact. Avoid littering, respect wildlife and their habitats, and follow designated trails or paths during your bike tour. Leave no trace and strive to minimize your ecological footprint.
  • Dress Appropriately: Tibet's weather can be unpredictable, and it's important to dress appropriately for varying conditions. Carry warm and layered clothing, as temperatures can drop, especially at higher altitudes. Respect local customs by avoiding revealing or offensive clothing, especially in religious areas.
  • Language and Communication: While English might be spoken in some tourist areas, be prepared for limited English proficiency in more remote regions. Learning a few basic Tibetan phrases or carrying a translation app can facilitate communication and show respect for the local culture.
  • Photography Guidelines : When taking photographs , be respectful of people's privacy and seek permission before photographing individuals, especially monks or locals engaged in religious activities. Some monasteries or religious sites may have specific guidelines or restrictions on photography, so it's important to follow them.
  • Local Economy: Support the local economy by purchasing locally made crafts, souvenirs, and food products. This helps contribute to the livelihood of the local communities and promotes sustainable tourism.

Preparing for a Tibet bike tour requires attention to several key aspects to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some important steps to consider when preparing for your Tibet bike tour:

  • Physical Fitness: Enhance your physical fitness and endurance by engaging in regular cardiovascular exercise, such as cycling, hiking , or running. Focus on building leg strength and stamina to cope with the demands of cycling in mountainous terrain.
  • Altitude Acclimatization: Tibet's high altitude can pose challenges. If possible, arrive in Tibet a few days before the bike tour to allow your body to acclimatize to the altitude. Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities initially, and listen to your body's signals. Consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns or pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Bike Maintenance: Ensure your bike is in good condition before the tour. Take it for a thorough check-up, including brakes, gears, tires, and chain. Carry essential repair tools, spare parts, and a puncture repair kit. Familiarize yourself with basic bike maintenance and repair techniques to handle minor issues that may arise during the tour.
  • Packing Essentials: Pack appropriate clothing for varying weather conditions, including layers for temperature fluctuations and protective gear such as a helmet, gloves, and sunglasses. Carry a first aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, and personal medications. Don't forget travel documents, including your passport, Tibet Travel Permit, and any necessary permits.
  • Training and Familiarization : Familiarize yourself with the route and terrain of your Tibet bike tour. Research the distances, elevations, and road conditions to mentally and physically prepare yourself. Gradually increase your cycling distances and practice riding on varied terrains to build confidence and endurance.
  • Mental Preparation: Prepare yourself mentally for the challenges and rewards of the bike tour. Be open to experiencing a different culture, weather conditions, and physical demands. Maintain a positive mindset, embrace the adventure, and be flexible to adapt to any unexpected circumstances that may arise.
  • Cultural Awareness: Learn about Tibetan culture, customs, and etiquette to show respect and appreciation for the local traditions. Familiarize yourself with basic Tibetan phrases or carry a translation app to facilitate communication and connect with the local people.
  • Travel Insurance: Obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation or interruption, and the specific activities involved in your Tibet bike tour. Confirm that it includes coverage for high-altitude activities and evacuation if required.

The porters and assistant guide were all so friendly and accommodating, and I would highly recommend this trip for any adventurer.

Probably the best Tibet Discovery tour I've been on to date. I got fantastic experience all around. Tibet alone was worth the price.

Know before Your Tibet Cycling Tour

1. when is the best time to take a cycling tour in tibet.

The best time to take a Tibet cycling tour is normally in the spring and autumn seasons, which run from April to June and late September to November.

The spring is one of the most stunning times to travel to Tibet, as the new growth after the cold harsh winter is blooming through, and the landscapes appear to be fresh and revived. The skies are also clear and bright, and while it is not yet hot, it is pleasant enough for cycling, although it can get a little colder at night still.

Autumn is also an ideal time, as the landscape is still lush and green from the summer rains, and the weather is cooling down, though it can still be a little humid in early October.

In late October, the leaves change color and start to fall, covering the ground with a rustic-colored carpet. The temperatures are mild and comfortable until the end of November, and there is very little chance of rain or snow.

2. What is the fitness demand for a Tibet Cycling Tour?

For some of the cycling tours of Tibet, you do not need a high level of fitness, but must be able to cycle for at least 50-100 kilometers a day.

Most Tibet cycling tours start at a moderate level , which requires you to be of an average level of fitness.

For some of the longer and more arduous tours, a higher degree of fitness is required, as cycling at high altitudes up the sides of mountains can be exhausting, and can induce altitude sickness if you are not suitably fit and properly acclimatized.

3. How to avoid altitude sickness when taking a cycling tour in Tibet?

The first thing to do is to acclimatize for a couple of days in Lhasa before you head out on the cycling tour. This allows your body time to adjust to the higher altitude, and reduces the risk of altitude sickness once you start the tour.

You should also remember the adage on altitude, and always sleep lower than you have reached that day. Always drop down a few hundred feet before stopping for the night, as it helps to keep altitude sickness at bay.

You should also not ascend to fast or too high, and around 500 meters per day is a good average.

4. What to carry while we ride?

Your main pack with your food and clothing, etc., can be carried by the support vehicle, which is required for all international cyclists touring in Tibet.

However, you will want to carry some things with you, for the daily needs while you are riding.

It is essential to carry water on your bike , as well as some food as snacks while you are riding, to help keep your energy levels up.

You should also carry a light sweater to put on when you stop for a break or for sightseeing, as you can cool down quickly once you are stopped.

Bike Guide for Tibet Cycling Tour

What kind of bike is suitable for a tibet bike tour.

While you can do some Tibet tours on a racing bike, it is better to bring or hire a mountain bike for the tour.

Much of Tibet has had new road surfaces along its main highways over the last several years, and the roads are much better, especially the road from Tingri to Gyirong Port.

However, there are still patches of highway that are not yet resurfaced, and while the work is ongoing, it is not definite when it will be completed.

On these rough stretches of highway, a road bike will be no good, as you will have to get off and walk or ride the 4x4, because the ground is too rocky and bumpy for the thin tires to cope with.

Should I bring my own bike on a Tibet cycling trip?

It is up to you if you bring your own bike or hire one here. Bikes can easily be hired in Lhasa for the tours we currently have, and are probably going to be cheaper than transporting your own mountain bike across countries or continents.

You can pack your bike up to take Tibet flights or Tibet trains , and the bike is not included in your luggage allowance on the train, though you may have to pay for additional cargo luggage for the flights.

Where to rent a bike in Tibet?

You can easily rent a mountain bike in Lhasa , once you arrive. Lhasa has several stores that handle bicycle rentals across the city, and for the average mountain bike, with gears, it is relatively cheap when compared to bringing your own mountain biked to Tibet.

On average, it costs around 50-60 yuan per day (1-2 US dollars) to hire a mountain bike, which can be returned at the end of the tour. For a trip to Lake Namtso, which requires four days f riding, your rental cost will be around 200 to 240 yuan, which converts to around 28 to 35 dollars for the entire trip.On average, it costs around 50-60 yuan per day (1-2 US dollars) to hire a mountain bike, which can be returned at the end of the tour.
