Atrox & Aspero Carriers

One of the good things about Star Trek Online is that we get to see starship designs from other species. And the moment I saw the two Caitian-designed carriers I knew I had to stat/run them.

star trek online caitian atrox carrier

The Atrox -class is described as follows:

To deal with the increasing threat of the Klingons and the tactical advantage they have with their carriers, the Federation has called upon their member worlds for assistance. In response, the Caitians made their fierce Atrox Carrier available to Starfleet. A true carrier, the Atrox has been updated by the Caitians and the Starfleet Corps of Engineers with modifications that give it some of the abilities of a science vessel, including subsystem targeting and bonuses to Shield and Auxiliary power. These abilities allow the Atrox to support its fighters as well as other ships in its fleet.

And here are the stats I’ve assigned to it:

  • COMMAND SHIP
  • EXTENSIVE SHUTTLEBAYS
  • ADVANCED SHIELDS
  • FIGHTER WING (See the Typhon-class for this Talent)
  • Tertryon Beam Arrays (Medium Range, Piercing 2, Area/Spread)
  • Photon Torpedoes
  • Quantum Torpedoes

The Aspero -class is described as follows:

The Caitian Aspero Support Carrier is a powerful upgrade to the  Atrox -class platform. This carrier is capable of adopting to multiple roles, thanks to the flexibility offered by its massive twin hangar bays. As is necessary to command so many small craft, the starship features immense networking and sensor capabilities. All of this is contained by a potent structural integrity field and substantial shielding.

It has the same Departments, Scale, Weapons, and Talents as the Atrox -class above, with the following adjustments to its Systems Scores:

If you would like to see these carriers in action, I highly recommend coming to check out the Series Premiere of Star Trek: Euthenia on Tuesday, September 14th at 9:00 PM EDT (GMT-4) on my Twitch!

Write ups of these carriers seem a bit lacking without details on the Stalker fighters the carrier normally carries. https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/Stalker_Stealth_Fighter And have the Shikaris escorts gotten a treatment yet? While I doubt you could carry them internally like in STO, it seems likely that their carriers would likely have a few of their own escort vessels along as part of the carrier group.. even if more standard federation ships are also present. https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/Caitian_Shikaris_Escort

I considered doing a Stalker fighter write-up, but essentially they wouldn’t be all that different from the shuttles we see in the Command Supplement. AFAIK the Shikaris haven’t been stat’d yet either.

Star Trek Online: The Caitian Atrox Carrier First Impressions

Posted by Helvetica | May 5, 2012 | News , Reviews | 1 |

caitian-atrox-carrier

The Atrox is available via the Cryptic C-Store for 2,000 C-Points or effectively $25.

As for specifications:

Weapons: 3 Fore, 3 Aft Bridge Officers: 1 Lieutenant Tactical, 1 Lieutenant Commander Engineering, 1 Lieutenant Commander Science, 1 Commander Science Consoles: 2 Tactical, 3 Engineering, 4 Science Devices: 4 Crew: 3,000 Turn Rate: 5 degrees per second Impulse Modifier: 0.15 Hull Strength: 40,500 Shield Modifier: 1.2 +5 Power to Shields +10 Power to Auxiliary Subsystem Targeting 2 Hangar Bays Caitian Stalker Fighters

With three fore and three aft weapons and an extremely slow turn-rate, players would be best outfitting it with beam weapons or turrets (in order to keep as many weapons on an enemy in arc as possible); meaning that most people will fly the mothership itself like a cruiser in most cases. It’s not as hardy or well-hulled as a cruiser, so as a result, taking direct fire with it is a serious mistake even with the +5 to shield power.

The Atrox is a science-support vessel (with two science stations, one lt. commander and one commander) as a result they’re best in a support role. The primary DPS expected to come out of this carrier is from the fighters that it can launch and there’s a huge variety of Federation small-craft that it can launch from its two hangars.

Of the different types of fighters the ship comes with two hangars of Caitian Stalker Fighters—stealthy up-close-and-personal fighters that knock out enemy shields and then punch through hulls with tetryon pulse cannons, an anti-proton sweep (on the advanced version), and a thoron device (aren’t these illegal in the Federation?) The biggest benefit to the stalkers is that they’re semi-invisible and difficult to target due to hull masking.

Other types of hangars available to the Federation include : Peregrine Fighters, the Starfleet DPS workhorse small-craft designed for significant damage and fighter screening; the Type 8 Shuttlecraft, harassment fighters with a bit heavier hull for absorbing incoming fire while outflanking the enemy and screening the mothership; Runabouts, very tough little vessels outfitted with tractor beams and chroniton torpedo launchers to slow down and disable enemy capital ships; Delta Flyers, another tough-as-nails small-craft outfitted with shield draining tachyon beam emitters; and finally Shield Repair Units, somewhat like workbees that can be set to repair shield damage, but they have weak hulls.

It’s expected that Runabouts will probably be highly sought after for PvP combat with their chroniton torpedoes and tractor beams making it difficult for enemy ships to keep the mothership in their primary firing arcs.

catian-atrox-carrier-long

In addition to being able to launch harassment and screening fighters, the Atrox is a science vessel which means that it has subsystem targeting enabled—however it lacks Sensor Analysis. This means that while it can knock out subsystems on enemy capital ships, it will not be gaining DPS for each second it has a target in its sights. As a result, players may find themselves hopping between targets more often to support their fighters (and friends.)

An important thing to note is that the hangars act like weapons and are not consoles, meaning that an Atrox captain doesn’t need to worry about losing precious console slots to the hangars—like one might experience when slotting modules in an Odyssey.

Overall, the Caitian Atrox Carrier feels like a capable craft that relies heavily on its launched fighter screen and should be played more as a support vessel that knocks out shields of enemies, debuffs and strips resistances, and opens them up for its harassment fighters to take apart; or captains looking for a science support role, might look into abilities that enhance their fighters and their friends in the theatre of battle.

It’s good to see new ships in Star Trek Online, especially ones from the non-human races in the Federation. Of course, this thing also does nothing to slow down the power creep that seems to be infesting newer designs over the older ships.

Tzenkethi Tzen-tar Dreadnought Carrier 1

A Tzenkethi Tzen-tar Dreadnought Carrier

Carriers are a type of playable starship . They are among the largest vessels in the Starfleet , KDF , RRF and Dominion fleets, and due to their massive size they are also the slowest and least maneuverable. This weakness is offset though by the vessels ability to launch hangar pets and other small craft to aid it in combat. For example, a Vo'Quv -class Carrier can launch hangar pets such as B'rel Birds-of-Prey or To'Duj Fighters to draw fire or attack a target, or it can launch debuff pets such as Power Siphon Drones or Tachyon Drones that will automatically weaken the opponent.

All Carriers have two hangar bays and can utilize carrier commands to manage their hangar pets. While the number of weapon and device slots varies with each individual ship, they can all equip Dual Cannons . Certain hangar pets may only be equipped by "Full Carriers", i.e. those described on this page.

Consoles have no effect on pets unless explicitly stated in their tooltip, however target applied buffs like Attack Pattern Beta and Fire On My Mark will. Flight Deck Duty Officers also have different effects that will modify carrier pets based upon current carrier commands like Recall Mode , Intercept Mode , and Escort Mode .

Science Carriers have a Commander Science bridge officer slot, built-in Subsystem Targeting abilities, and generally 6 weapon slots and 4 device slots, though those with 4 forward weapons so far have only 3 device slots.

Flight Deck Carriers [ | ]

Flight Deck Carriers have a Commander Engineering bridge officer slot, 8 weapon slots and 4 device slots. They are Cruiser-Carrier hybrids with access to two cruiser commands ( Shield Frequency Modulation and Attract Fire ) in lieu of Subsystem Targeting abilities. See the Flight Deck Carrier page for details on these starships.

Heavy Dreadnoughts [ | ]

Like Flight Deck Carriers, Heavy Dreadnought Cruisers have a Commander Engineering bridge officer slot, 8 weapon slots and lack Subsystem Targeting abilities, though they only have 3 device slots. The Universe and Durgath classes have access to two cruiser commands ( Weapon System Efficiency and Strategic Maneuvering ) in exchange, though the Valkis class does not.

Single-hangar starships [ | ].

This page deals with playable starships with two hangar bays, but a variety of starships in the game have a single hangar bay from which to launch hangar pets and the same carrier commands to manage them. VoQuv Carrier Flying

Vo'Quv class

The recently built Vo'Quv Carrier is the pride of the Klingon Defense Force . This gigantic ship spans nearly 1,300 meters in length which is over 5 times the length of an average Klingon Bird-of-Prey . Unlike most other Klingon vessels the Klingon Carrier does not have any cloaking technology so it cannot hide itself in or out of combat however doesn't require it as much as vessels like Raptors due to its sheer power and strength. The Vo'Quv Carrier has set the standard for all currently existing Carriers in the game, and is often referred to as the original Carrier in Star Trek Online.

Mirror Universe Vo'Quv Carrier [ | ]

MirrorUniverseVo'QuvCarrier

The Mirror Vo'Quv Carrier is very similar is design to the Prime Universe Vo'Quv, with the main differences aesthetically being simply hull textures. Systems-wise, the Mirror Vo'Quv exchanges a Lieutenant Science Bridge Officer station with a Lieutenant Engineering Bridge Officer station, as well as exchanging a Science console slot with an Engineering one. Both of these changes make the Mirror Vo'Quv slightly tougher than the Prime-counterpart, but not as capable as a support Carrier.

Kar'Fi Battle Carrier [ | ]

Klingon Kar'Fi Battle Carrier

Kar'Fi class

The Kar'Fi class takes many of the Fek'Ihri stylings, and as such doesn't look much like the normal Klingon designs. This class unlike the others were captured by the Klingon Defense Force during the conflict with the Feh'Ihri Horde. This Carrier is much more tactically biased than the Vo'Quv and, as a result, is often utilised as a support-damage Carrier, moreso than the Vo'Quv.

Recent conflicts with the Tholian Assembly have resulted in a handful of captured Tholian vessels. Tholian technology is very different from other Alpha Quadrant powers, and these vessels are prized as opportunities for study as well as new combat vessels. The Recluse Carrier is an example of high-survivability and high-versatility on any single Carrier. Its ability to survive extended situations make this one of the toughest vessels to take down.
