Star Trek: Who Are The Talosians?

This unique alien species has a fascinating history and an imaginative backstory. What can fans of this series know about its first alien race?

The Star Trek franchise has a long, proud history of strange and powerful humanoid aliens that make up its massive universe. With every new face or unique appearance comes a history of fascinating details, both in the narrative and in the real world.

The Talosians are, technically, the first species of aliens to be named in any Star Trek media. Though Spock is the first alien depicted, the name of his species is withheld for the first few episodes. The first appearance of the Talosians takes place in the original 1965 pilot of the original series, setting the tone for almost sixty years of classic sci-fi adventure to follow.

The denizens of Talos IV are humanoids with bulbous protruding heads. Their appearance, like that of many Star Trek aliens , efficiently communicates what they're about. The Talosians are powerful psychics, capable of creating fabulous illusions with only their minds. They are extremely intelligent and capable beings, who once commanded a planet rich with technological advancement and a well-functioning society. The Talosians had access to warp technology, the mark of a particularly advanced civilization. Things seemed to be going well, at least at one point. Tragically, Talosian civilization was cut short as a result of a catastrophic nuclear war . Their numbers were reduced to single digits and their civilization never recovered. Those that did survive moved underground, living in squalor to avoid the nightmarish wasteland their war left behind. But, while hiding out beneath Talos IV's surface, a new problem emerged.

The remaining Talosians living underground lost all knowledge of technology that they once had. Their concern for the rest of the universe grew dim, and they stopped trying to materially improve their conditions. The only thing that did improve was their psychic capabilities . While sheltered underground, their mental capabilities grew ever stronger, and their ability to create and live within psychic constructs became second nature. Living within illusions became addictive, leading Talosians to spend every waking moment in their constructed realities. After untold millennia spent in a collective consensual hallucination, their tolerance began to outgrow their capabilities. Like a drug addiction, their fix was slowly losing potency and the lack of mental stimulation threatened to drive them to madness. With few other options, the Talosians turned to capturing wayward space travelers and forcing them to participate as performers in the grand illusion.

The Talosians' first appearance is in the unaired pilot episode "The Cage," which was only released decades after the series officially began. That episode was considered too cerebral and lacking in action, so it didn't get to be the official starting point of the franchise. The plot introduces then-captain of the Enterprise, Christopher Pike , as he leads the Star Fleet crew to landfall on Talos IV. Once there, Pike meets a beautiful woman named Vina, who leads the captain into a trap. Pike finds himself captured by the Talosians with an unusual goal in mind: to marry him off to Vina. The Talosians seek a steady supply of human puppets to use in their ongoing illusions, and to that end, try to seduce Pike and keep him as breeding stock. Their plan falls apart, however, when Pike resists their myriad temptations. Despite multiple illusory attempts to draw Pike into their clutches, Pike demands freedom at every turn.

The Talosians, weirdly, were more than willing to part with Pike. The alien race bore him no ill will, happy to learn that human beings would fight back against captivity, even in the best possible conditions. This narrative outlined the fundamental difference between the Talosians and mankind: the former retreats into the imagined, while the latter takes the best and worst of reality as it is. The Talosians bid Pike farewell but hold onto Vina, who needs their illusory gifts to remain beautiful. They even generate a fake version of Pike to keep Vina company. The Talosians aren't malicious , they're just high-minded addicts who don't share human concepts of morality. Later adventures that crossed paths with the Talosians underwent a similar story, but their days of attempted kidnappings were over.

The Talosians had a couple of run-ins with Spock , both of which went reasonably well. Spock found himself on Talos IV after becoming unstuck in time. This handicap rendered him largely useless, and the Talosians were happy to let him stay safely with them for a brief period. They also used their illusion powers to allow Spock and company to safely escape. Their final appearance in the Original Series occurred when Spock brought Pike to the planet after a near-fatal accident. After exposure to delta rays, Pike was rendered a prisoner in his own body. The Talosians gave him the freedom to live in the dream, his mind freed from his useless body until his death.

The Talosians aren't villains, but they are one of the more unusual species in the Star Trek franchise. Psychics who are addicted to their own powers, but still willing to use them to help others, the race is a fascinating concept that still leaves plenty of room to explore in future projects.

I'm going to have to get that book. I do love how much creativity went into a lot of those alien designs, though I can't help wishing they had mixed in more familiar species.

It is 2254 , two weeks after a battle on Rigel VII that left seven crew members injured and took the lives of three USS Enterprise crewmen, including Captain Christopher Pike 's yeoman , the ship encounters a space distortion on a collision course, according to helmsman José Tyler . It turns out to be an old radio distress signal , "keyed to cause interference and attract attention." The crew says it was sent eighteen years earlier from the Talos star group , but first officer Number One notes they have no Earth colonies or vessels that far out. Pike declines to investigate without any indication of survivors but proceeds to the Vega colony to care for the crew's own injuries.

Pike calls the Enterprise 's chief medical officer , Dr. Boyce , to his quarters but Boyce instead fixes Pike a martini to induce Pike to talk about the battle on Rigel VII. Pike has been thinking of resigning , burdened with making lethal decisions, but Boyce counsels against it. The science officer Spock interrupts on the intercom that a follow-up message from Talos IV indicates there are eleven survivors. Pike returns to the bridge and orders the ship to Talos, at "time warp, factor seven." He encounters a comely young woman, J.M. Colt . The ship's first officer, a woman named Number One, says Colt is the captain's replacement yeoman. Pike expresses discomfort with "a woman on the bridge," assuring Number One that she is an exception, as she's " different, of course. "

A barren planet's surface

Pike leads a landing party to the surface of Talos IV and finds the makeshift campsite of a disheveled group of male scientists from the crashed survey ship SS Columbia . The scientists identify themselves as an expedition of the American Continent Institute and Lieutenant Jose Tyler describes technological advances while they have been marooned, particularly in the time barrier being broken. A beautiful young woman approaches them. She is Vina , born almost as the group crash-landed on the planet. Vina strangely tells Pike he is a "prime specimen" – as three aliens with huge, pulsating heads watch the landing party through a viewing screen.

Boyce provides his medical report to Pike and reports that the survivors are in good health, "almost too good." The scientist Theodore Haskins offers to show Pike their "secret," and Vina leads him away from the others. Vina suddenly vanishes, along with the scientists and their camp. Talosians render Pike unconscious and abduct him through a doorway in the rock. The landing party fires laser pistols at the door to no avail and Spock advises the ship via his communicator that this " is all some sort of trap. We've lost the captain. Do you read? "

Pike wakes up without his jacket, communicator, and laser, inside an underground cell with a transparent wall, through which he sees several creatures of different species in nearby cells. Several Talosians arrive and make callous scientific observations about him, which he perceives not through sound but telepathy . They note that Pike is more adaptable to his new surroundings and prepare to begin "the experiment."

The Talosians intend to make Pike experience illusions based on his memories, in order to interest him in Vina. The first illusion returns Pike to Rigel VII, with the new task of saving Vina. Pike is not interested in participating, telling Vina he is " not an animal performing for its supper, " but he is interested in learning the parameters of the illusions and of his captivity. Nevertheless, he manages to survive the illusory attack from the Kalar and is returned, with Vina, to his cell.

He learns from Vina that the Talosians have severely weakened their world and themselves by reliance on their telepathic powers. They want Captain Pike and Vina as breeding stock for a new, stronger race to repopulate the barren surface of the planet. The Talosians punish Vina for revealing this information to Pike.

The Talosians provide him with a vial of liquid nourishment and insist that he consume it, even offering to make it appear as any food he wishes. Pike proposes to starve himself instead, which results in the Keeper punishing him with an illusion of being surrounded by scorching flame and threatens to punish him more severely for continued disobedience. Pike appears to relent by consuming the liquid, but then displays another outburst of attempting to break through the containment, unexpectedly startling the Keeper. Pike realizes that the Keeper was unable to read his mind during his outburst of anger and tries to inquire more as to why this is. The Keeper, still unable to probe Pike's mind, attempts then to distract Pike by changing the subject to Vina. Pike relents again, and the Keeper reveals that Vina was the sole survivor of the Columbia crash and confirms what she inadvertently revealed previously – that Pike and Vina were being kept to propagate Humanity and repopulate Talos IV. The conversation ends with Pike demanding that the Talosians punish him instead of her, since he is the one being uncooperative, which the Keeper regards as an excellent development in their relationship.

The next illusion is a pleasant picnic just outside Pike's hometown of Mojave , with Vina attempting to entice Pike with the familiar setting, but with Pike still resisting, knowing that all of it is just a mere illusion. Vina then realizes that scenarios with which Pike is already familiar have not been successful in enticing him to cooperate, and surmises that he might be more easily swayed by a forbidden fantasy. The Talosians next tempt Pike by making Vina appear as a dancing Orion slave girl .

The Enterprise tries without success to channel the starship 's power to the surface to blast a way to Pike. Then Spock locates the Talosians' power generator and prepares a landing party . However, only the females (Number One and Yeoman Colt) are the only ones transported, as the Talosians seek to give Pike a choice of mates; and their weapons and communicators appear not to work. Vina resents the competition; Number One says records indicate Vina cannot be as young as she appears.

As the rescue attempts have failed, Spock orders the Enterprise to leave orbit, but the Talosians immobilize it and scan its records, convincing Spock that the ship's utility to the Talosians is at an end and that they will now "swat… this fly."

Pike determines that any strong emotions keep the Talosians from controlling his mind and uses this to his advantage. While Pike feigns sleep, the Talosian magistrate tries to recover the female officers' lasers from the cage. Pike seizes the magistrate and ignores the illusions. He reasons that the malfunction of the lasers was itself an illusion and uses the laser pistol to compel the magistrate to stop deceiving him. He now sees that they had blasted away the wall of the cage on their first attempt.

He escapes with the women to the surface and sees that the blasting operation on the door had also succeeded, despite an illusion made to appear otherwise. But the communicators still don't work, and the Talosian says that the original goal was to put the group on the surface. Pike offers himself as a captive for the freedom of the others and the Enterprise , but Number One begins a "force-chamber" overload of her laser pistol, intending to destroy herself and her shipmates to thwart the Talosians' plans. She tells the Talosian magistrate that it is wrong to create a whole race of Humans to live as slaves.

The magistrate's aides arrive, presenting the summary of the ship's records. The records have shown that Humans possess a "unique hatred of captivity," even when pleasant, making them too dangerous for the Talosians' needs. The magistrate does not apologize for the imposition but concedes that they will now become extinct. Pike asks if commerce or cooperation might not restore the planet, but the magistrate replies that Humans would learn the Talosians' power of illusion and destroy themselves, just as the Talosians did. The crew members are free to go, but Vina says she cannot join them. After the others transport aboard, the Talosians show Pike Vina's true appearance: underneath the Talosian illusions, she is badly deformed from the crash of the Columbia . They were able to make it so that she could remain alive, but could not restore her appearance. The Talosians agree to take care of Vina and they provide her with an illusory Captain Pike to keep her company.

Pike returns to the bridge, reassuring Dr. Boyce that he is completely refreshed for work, and waving off a query from Yeoman Colt about whom he would have chosen as a mate, as well as accusing the doctor of being a "dirty old man" for inquiring into the meaning of Colt's remark. The Enterprise departs.

Background information [ ]

  • The title of this episode was changed during production from "The Cage" to "The Menagerie". However, when the two-part episode " The Menagerie, Part I " and " The Menagerie, Part II " (which reused almost all the footage from this episode) went into production, the title of this installment reverted to "The Cage". ( The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., p. 10; [1] )
  • Although the episode has a title, and is universally referred to as "The Cage", no episode title actually appears on screen, with the only title used in the credits being "Star Trek".

Story and script [ ]

  • The genesis of this episode was the first of twenty-five proposed stories in Gene Roddenberry 's series outline Star Trek is... . The description of the plot concept that became this episode (initially titled "The Next Cage") read, " The desperation of our series lead, caged and on exhibition like an animal, then offered a mate. "
  • During an early May 1964 meeting wherein Gene Roddenberry and Herbert F. Solow pitched the series to television network NBC , Jerry Stanley – NBC Program Development Vice President – asked to hear more about the idea for the series' pilot episode. Solow later reflected, " I asked Gene to explain. He did, very succinctly describing the premise of 'The Menagerie'. " Neither Grant Tinker – who was also present at the meeting and was, at the time, NBC Vice President of Programs, West Coast – nor Jerry Stanley was convinced to agree to a series deal with Roddenberry and Solow. Just as Roddenberry was about to leave the room, Solow made a last-ditch attempt to persuade the NBC executives, stating, " If you give us a commitment for a ninety-minute script instead of one hour, and we make the pilot, you can always run it as a TV special and recoup your investment if it doesn't sell as a series. Besides, I'm not leaving this room until you give us a script order. " This was enough to sway NBC's stance and the executives agreed to make a deal. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , pp. 6, 19-20)
  • This episode's premise was not the only concept that NBC considered for the series' pilot. Herb Solow explained, " They wanted to hear more stories before one of them was chosen for the pilot script. We had more meetings, and Gene gave them more stories. " ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 20)
  • This episode's narrative style was selected after Oscar Katz , the president of Desilu Television at the time, personally pitched four different narrative approaches to the NBC executives. Whereas the first two-story types primarily focused on events aboard the Enterprise and the third option featured a planet whose inhabitants were much like Humanity of either the past or the future, the fourth type involved a planet that was highly different from Earth and was inhabited by people who were likewise very different from Humans. NBC chose the fourth type, the hardest to produce, as they wanted to challenge Desilu by making it as hard as possible for that studio to prove the series was doable. Explained Katz, " I tried to talk them out of it, because I knew it was going to be expensive and, even more, I felt that it might not be representative of the series. But they couldn't be talked out of it. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 11)
  • The plot idea for this episode underwent further development in early May 1964, after NBC vice-president Mort Werner provided Gene Roddenberry with US$20,000 in development money to write three different story outlines based on the Star Trek format. ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 41-42; The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., p. 10) With so much at stake over the trio of episode outlines, Roddenberry diligently labored away at them, obsessing over each page and every word. He spent a month writing the outlines as well as several weeks revising them, after which he finally turned the pages over to NBC. ( Star Trek Memories , p. 33) The outlines had been forwarded to the network by the end of June 1964 and the particular outline for this episode was dated 29 June ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 45 & 47). The other two candidates were "The Perfect World" aka "Visit to Paradise" (which became " The Return of the Archons ") and "The Women" (which became " Mudd's Women "). ( These Are the Voyages: TOS Season One , 1st ed., p. 34) Following the submission of the outlines, NBC took several days before announcing their choice of "The Cage" as the pilot-to-be. ( Star Trek Memories , p. 33)
  • The episode's story outline consisted of 26 pages. [2] In those pages, the name of the Enterprise 's captain was Robert April (as it was in the series outline Star Trek is… ). He was the only one of his crew whose name was to be changed, as the episode continued to evolve. Also, the Talosians were crab-like aliens (their species remaining unnamed, though they were commonly referred to as "crab-creatures"), and their planet was "Sirius IV". The outline is fully transcribed in The Making of Star Trek (pp. 47-65).
  • Some of Gene Roddenberry's initial thoughts for the episode's illusory scenarios had to be altered or scaled back due to production and budgetary realities. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary )
  • Hours after NBC greenlighted the pilot (a duration that Gene Roddenberry and Herb Solow spent ironing out some of the "twists, turns, and bends in the plot"), Gene Roddenberry set to work on writing the teleplay. ( Star Trek Memories , p. 36; Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , pp. 20-21) As he wrote the first draft script, he spared no thought for the practicalities of producing what he was writing about, such as the episode's laser cannon, instead leaving such realistic considerations until later. Noted Herb Solow, " The network draft wasn't for shooting, the network draft was for selling. When we got the order for the pilot film, then we'd face the budget problem head on. " ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , pp. 20-21)
  • Gene Roddenberry did, however, care about the believability of the script. To this end, he initiated a period of intensive scientific research and began an acquaintance with Harvey P. Lynn , a physicist from the RAND Corporation who served as Roddenberry's unofficial technical adviser on the pilot. ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 74, 76-77)
  • During the remainder of the summer and into the early autumn of 1964, major effort was invested in the development of the shooting script, the intention being that it was to later be submitted to NBC for approval. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 78) The first script draft was dated 8 September 1964 . ( The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., p. 11) In that version of the episode, the captain's name was still Robert April, though both the Talosians and their homeworld of Talos IV received their eventual names. ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 91-95)
  • It was also the initial draft of the episode's teleplay that changed the Talosians from resembling crabs to becoming small and slim humanoids with elongated heads. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 93) This alteration was made because the production staff realized the aliens might seem too much like the bug-eyed monsters of "1950s horror movies," the antithesis of what Gene Roddenberry wanted the more intellectually-minded Star Trek to be. Depicting the extraterrestrials as crab-like creatures would have not only run a good chance of making them look unconvincing but also would have been prohibitively expensive, two deciding factors in the adjustment of their form. ( Star Trek: The Original Series 365 , p. 008)
  • According to Majel Barrett , the first character introduced in the script was Number One. " That was the first character Gene wrote into the script, " Barrett stated. " Captain April was not an afterthought because he knew he had to have a captain, but the first character that was described was Number One. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 27 , p. 43)
  • The episode's first draft script had an opening scene in the hangar bay where Captain April, whose character at this stage was a tad older than Captain Pike was later written, is inspecting new crew members. He remarks disapprovingly to the doctor, at one point, about the young age of some of these officers. " Something, " Roddenberry later wrote in a memo, " that Jim Kirk , the boy wonder of the Academy , never would have done. " In this same scene, April sees a number of badly-wounded crewmen off the ship, onto a space shuttle or taxi from the Human colony of Antares . Among these departing officers is an uninjured former navigator named Crowley who April is sending back in disgrace, because he fired on friendly aliens. The officer argues that they were monstrous in appearance and asks how he could have known that they were intelligent enough to have weapons. These protests are met by a stern but subdued dismissal from the captain, who quietly orders, " Get off my ship, mister. " ( The Making of Star Trek ; The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., pp. 11-12)
  • While scripting the episode, Gene Roddenberry developed a habit of being somewhat possessive about story ideas, to such a degree that Herb Solow considered this quality to be excessive. " As Gene completed the first-draft pilot script, " Solow remarked, " he unfortunately became overly protective of his new baby. " Furthermore, Roddenberry began to frequently lay claim to the input of others. " A new side of Gene slowly appeared: ownership of ideas, " commented Solow. " If a good story or series point came from anyone, be it NBC, [Desilu's agent] Ashley-Famous, or Desilu, Gene Roddenberry appropriated it. " ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 21)
  • A copy of the episode's first draft script was sent from Gene Roddenberry to Harvey P. Lynn, shortly prior to 14 September 1964. On that date, Lynn responded with correspondence of his own – a letter that included many comments on the script draft. Concerning the docking scene, Lynn proposed a theoretical docking method and a suggestion that the name Antares, since it refers to a sun unsuitable for the habitation of Humans, be substituted with "a more vague name" such as Tycho, Fabricus, or even Lynnicus (the latter name clearly being offered as an in-joke). Additionally, Lynn took the liberty of suggesting that the shuttle or taxi might be from a ship similar to the Enterprise and that that vessel had recently departed from Earth, which Lynn observed would correlate well with the introductions of both Tyler and Yeoman Colt. ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 90-92) The docking scene was excised from the script in a revised draft, and Roddenberry notified Lynn of the scene's exclusion in a letter sent on 24 September. ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 96-97)
  • Though the first script draft referred to Talos IV as being located at the "edge of the universe" and stated that Earth was "at the other end of this galaxy," Harvey P. Lynn rejected these notions, advising Gene Roddenberry that traveling from one end of the galaxy to the other would take an impossibly long time and encouraging him to switch the latter reference to "far away in this galaxy." ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 92, 94) Evidently, Roddenberry ultimately minimized the references to the far distance between Earth and Talos IV; of the two such references, the first was deleted while the second remained.
  • Harvey P. Lynn recommended that Talos IV be stated to be in either Sigma Draconis, Eta Cassiopeiae, or HR 8832 (aka Gliese 892 ), owing to both their proximity to our solar system and the fact that it is unknown whether any of them have any Earth-type planets. Other astral names that Lynn requested be changed were Epsilon VII, Orion, and Rigel 113, which he suggested substituting with Draconis, HR 8832, and Vega 113, respectively. A similar idea that he presented was changing Orion traders to Centaurian traders. ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 92, 95) In his reply on 24 September, Roddenberry expressed an interest in having the names of the stars in this episode be ones that were familiar to the audience. " This is why I've avoided such terms as 'HR8832,' etc, " he explained. On the other hand, he conceded that the continued use of Rigel and Orion could still be substituted, in the final shooting script, with names such as Vega, admitting that such names – while being more appropriate from a scientific perspective – were also possibly just as familiar. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 97) Comparing the second revised final draft script (dated 20 September 1964) to the episode's final draft indicates that Roddenberry ultimately replaced Rigel 113 with Rigel VII. Neither the same script draft nor the actual episode contain reference to Epsilon VII, though they also evidence that Roddenberry ultimately excluded not only HR 8832 but also Draconis and Vega 113.
  • Due to Harvey P. Lynn's influence, the SS Columbia is said to have been lost in the same "region" as the Talos star group, rather than the same "quadrant" as that star system, and the gravity of Talos IV was altered from "1.3 of Earth" to less than Earth's gravity. Lynn submitted the latter suggestion on the basis of the Talosians' appearance and proposed that Talos IV have a gravity that was 85% as powerful as Earth's. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 92) In the episode's final version, it is said to be "0.9 of Earth."
  • The character of Geologist was known as Astroscientist in the first draft script, but this was also changed on the recommendation of Harvey P. Lynn, who opted for "Geologist" because he believed it was a more specific title. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 93)
  • In the first draft script, the illusory Columbia survivors had more dialogue than they do in the episode's final edit. For instance, it was established that the survivors' distress call had been a directional beam. Harvey P. Lynn, however, proposed that it would be more likely for the survivors' signal to have been a broadcast beam, owing to the increased probability that such a beam would be intercepted. Solar batteries were mentioned by at least one of the survivors too, but Lynn opposed this by suggesting that the illusory Human instead say, " After we could no longer use the ship's power, we switched to automatic batteries and started praying. " ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 93) This dialogue was evidently later cut or omitted entirely.
  • Harvey P. Lynn also made some notes on the specifics of several elements that were intended to continue to be featured in the forthcoming series (such as lasers , for which he submitted four alternative names, though Gene Roddenberry maintained that he wanted the name to stay as it was, due to the high odds that it would be recognizable to viewers). ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 94, 97)
  • Executives at Desilu were also included in the revision process. Herb Solow explained, " Finally, all the top executives received copies of our pilot [script] to read, review with others, and comment on. I personally walked the Star Trek pilot script into [Desilu president and actress] Lucy [Ball] 's dressing room and handed it to her. 'Lucy, this is the Star Trek pilot script. There'll be lots of changes, so if you have any comments, let me have them, because there'll be ample time to implement them.' Lucy never mentioned the script […] I know Oscar [Katz] read his copy of the pilot script, but he never offered any comments [either]. " ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 22)
  • The second revised final draft script of the "The Cage" indicates, as does the episode, that Spock, José Tyler, and others had been wounded in the fighting on Rigel VII – events which took place just prior to the action in "The Cage". The script includes stage directions for Spock to be limping and for Tyler to have a bandaged hand.
  • As late as 20 November 1964 (in the second revised final script), the captain's name was James Winter.
  • Even though Gene Roddenberry was open to some of Harvey P. Lynn's suggestions, his possessiveness over plot ideas affected his interactions with NBC. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 21) The script's final draft was ready to send to the network by the end of September 1964 and the proposed shooting script was submitted to NBC in the last week of September. ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 90, 99) Herb Solow offered, " Gene and I met with NBC to get their script comments. He took offense at most of them, at times unnecessarily so. Some ideas were really good. " ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 21) However, Roddenberry was pleased with the network's general reaction to what he had written, the major stumbling block between them, at this point, being a specific dream sequence that Roddenberry had scripted. NBC warned against overly focusing on the sequence, wary that the message concerning what is reality might be lost on the audience. Numerous other, minor alterations were requested, but NBC more-or-less gave their approval for the episode to be filmed. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 99)
  • By the time this episode's script was completed, Gene Roddenberry's initial concept for the installment had been greatly changed by suggestions from Desilu and NBC. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 22) The teleplay also reflected the input of the numerous scientific advisers who Roddenberry had consulted. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 90) Having finished writing the script, Roddenberry asked Robert Butler to read it. Butler later remembered his reactions to the teleplay; " I remember thinking it was a terrific yarn, but that it was somewhat obscured because it was such a showcase script. 'The Cage' showcased such solid, good and fascinating science-fiction disciplines, examples and events, that it was, I thought, a little obscure. The story was somewhat remote. " ( Starlog , issue 117, p. 55)
  • By the time filming began, the name of the Enterprise 's commanding officer had finally been changed to Christopher Pike. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 115)
  • Prior to the making of this episode, Gene Roddenberry already knew that he wanted to cast both Majel Barrett – who he had in mind when originally developing the character Number One – and Leonard Nimoy as Number One and Spock, respectively. ( Star Trek Memories , p. 23; Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 2 , p. 82) All three had previously worked on The Lieutenant , a series that had been produced by Roddenberry and had featured appearances from Barrett and Nimoy. ( Star Trek Memories , pp. 43)
  • Casting director Joseph D'Agosta had also worked on The Lieutenant . At a point after Star Trek had been greenlighted but did not yet have a casting director, Gene Roddenberry called D'Agosta and eagerly invited him to fill that production capacity. ( The Star Trek Interview Book , p. 213)
  • The casting process began at a time when the script revisions were under way and the captain's name was still Robert April. ( Star Trek Memories , p. 41; Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 11 , p. 26) However, because Joseph D'Agosta was meanwhile at 20th Century Fox, his work on the episode was indirect. " I cast it on the phone, " he explained, " by just suggesting films to look at and what actors to see, and I relayed all this through a young man named Morris Chapnick , who was Gene's assistant. " ( The Star Trek Interview Book , p. 213) Chapnick, yet another production staffer who had worked on The Lieutenant , had first become aware of Star Trek when Roddenberry had told him about this pilot. ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 100-101)
  • Majel Barrett was cast as Number One before both Leonard Nimoy and Pike actor Jeffrey Hunter were cast in their roles. ( Star Trek Memories , p. 23) Alternative actors that were considered include Lloyd Bridges for the Captain Pike role, Martin Landau for the Spock character, and Yvonne Craig for the guest star role of Vina. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 11 , p. 26; [3] ) DeForest Kelley was considered for the roles of both Dr. Boyce and Spock. ( The Star Trek Interview Book , p. 98; Star Trek Memories , p. 44) Even though Leonard Nimoy was always Gene Roddenberry's first choice for the Spock role, he often said that he would have instead approached Martin Landau to play the role, if Nimoy had been unavailable. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 11 , p. 26)
  • Robert Butler was involved in many of the casting decisions for the episode, including the selection of Peter Duryea as José Tyler. Butler later recalled, " I was very much in on the casting of the supporting people […] I remember trying to get a freshness and colloquiality in those characters and not have them all be rigid and pasteboard leading men. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 6 , p. 53)
  • Robert Butler was happy with the casting of Peter Duryea, Majel Barrett, and Susan Oliver as Vina but had some difficulty with Jeffrey Hunter playing Pike. " I certainly knew of him and found him to be a real co-operative good guy, " stated Butler. " He was a little heroic and a little stiff, and I tried to modify that a little bit. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 6 , pp. 53-54)
  • In his introduction for the 1986 VHS release of "The Cage" (which can now be seen on the DVD version in the third season set), Gene Roddenberry noted that he refused to cast his crew what the network dubbed "sensibly," which according to Roddenberry meant "all white." This was indirectly contested by Herb Solow in the book Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , in which he states that Mort Werner deliberately encouraged NBC to show racial diversity and integration in its programs.
  • In general, the pilot gave its cast a good impression of how good the potentially forthcoming series could be. Laurel Goodwin , who was cast as Yeoman J.M. Colt , remembered, " The whole gang of us knew this show was going to go along wonderfully well. We were all so involved with our characters. There was no doubt in my mind that this would be a successful show if they could just get good stories. " ( Star Trek: Communicator  issue 119 , p. 59)
  • Leonard Mudie , who has one line of dialogue as one of the Columbia survivors, was a veteran of dozens of films dating back to the 1930s. He was 81 when this sequence was filmed, and he died the next year. He was the second-oldest actor ever to appear on the original Star Trek and the first to pass away.
  • Although male voices were dubbed in for the Talosians, all the Talosian actors were actually women. (This is, unfortunately, not correct. Felix Silla (January 11, 1937 - April 16, 2021) played one of The Keepers; he was not just a background image to show how small they were.) Robert Butler and Gene Roddenberry struck upon using this casting method at about the same time as one another, Butler reckoning that it would lend the Talosian characterizations an alien-like androgynous quality. ( The Star Trek Interview Book , p. 97) Roddenberry believed that the lighter builds of females might suggest that the Talosians had allowed their bodies to atrophy while instead choosing to concentrate on advanced brain development. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary ) Upon searching for suitable performers to play the parts, Roddenberry scoured Hollywood for short actresses with faces that he deemed to be interesting. ( The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., p. 15) Meg Wyllie was cast as the Talosian Keeper on Butler's recommendation, they having previously worked together. ( The Star Trek Interview Book , p. 98)
  • Clegg Hoyt played the transporter chief, Pitcairn, but his voice was dubbed in by Bob Johnson. Johnson was the voice on the tape (and disc) in the TV series Mission: Impossible .
  • Leonard Nimoy and Majel Barrett are the only actors to appear in both this episode and the final episode of Star Trek: The Original Series , " Turnabout Intruder ", where Barrett played her most regular role, Nurse Chapel .
  • Malachi Throne ( Voice of The Keeper ) featured not only in this episode, Leonard Nimoy's first Star Trek appearance, but also appeared during Nimoy's final TV Star Trek appearance, the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode " Unification II ".
  • This is the first of six Star Trek instances in which Leonard Nimoy appeared without William Shatner, the other five being TAS : " The Slaver Weapon ", TNG : " Unification I " and " Unification II ", and the films Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness .
  • Mike Dugan , who played the illusory Kalar warrior, was actually a stunt performer. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary )
  • After the crew beams down to the planet surface of Talos IV , Spock is seen limping as he walks toward the singing plants. It has been mistakenly stated that Nimoy had suffered an injury prior to filming. In fact, Nimoy's limp here was feigned, in accordance with the script. ( The Making of Star Trek [ page number? • edit ] ) José Tyler similarly appears with a bandage around his hand. Both injuries were meant to reference the recent mission-gone-wrong that Pike speaks to Boyce about.
  • Because Jeffrey Hunter (who played Pike) was playing a very controlled, internalized character, Nimoy felt the need to bring in some energy and animation onto the set. ( Mind Meld: Secrets Behind the Voyage of a Lifetime ; et al.)

  • The making of this episode despite the fact that best estimates for the pilot originally placed its production cost as more than US$500,000 represented a considerable gamble for Desilu, which was a small, ill-equipped studio at the time. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 41) Nervous about this situation, NBC set out to monitor the progress of the pilot, keeping a check on the project's schedule and cost. ( Star Trek Memories , p. 36)
  • Oscar Katz announced NBC's go-ahead to produce the pilot at a Desilu board meeting, after which Herb Solow fielded questions from the board. He explained that, although the pilot was going to cost more than NBC gave the studio, Desilu had no way of knowing how much more until after the revised script had been budgeted. Solow later mused, " The board was nervous. Production of a ninety-minute science-fiction pilot was an expensive business move, a risky business move. " As the meeting went on, Solow gave assurances that it was possible for Desilu to produce the show and tried to maintain a positive demeanor as he answered more questions about the imminent pilot. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 23)
  • At first, it was uncertain how a production crew could be assembled to handle such an ambitious and complex episode as this, though Gene Roddenberry and Herb Solow immediately ruled out the crew that regularly produced Desilu's The Lucy Show , which starred Desilu President Lucille Ball. " As professional as the crew was, most of them would be of little help when confronted with the overwhelming demands and technical requirements of the planned Star Trek pilot, " explained Solow. " Basically, Gene and I were faced with the job of building a production unit from scratch at a time when the availability lists from the unions were scant or empty. " ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 27)
  • Besides Gene Roddenberry and Herb Solow, the first production staffer to be assigned to this episode was Robert Butler. He was chosen by Roddenberry and Solow, following extensive talks with both NBC Programming and Alden Schwimmer, the boss of Ashley-Famous. NBC was satisfied with the decision, Butler having established himself as a director on numerous television series in the 1960s (including The Lieutenant ). ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , pp. 27 & 13) It was Gene Roddenberry who asked Robert Butler to helm the episode. ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 6 , p. 52) Both Roddenberry and Solow regarded Butler as highly dependable. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 27) However, Roddenberry's extreme protectiveness over the episode clashed with Butler's impression of the script as being somewhat obscure. Butler later reflected, " I discussed whether or not people would get it. I could tell at that point that Gene was so consumed with it that he couldn't have heard any objections. " ( Starlog issue 117, p. 55) The director also said, " I remember trying to suggest to Gene that we ought to do some straightening out, or at least we should discuss it, and I remember thinking that Gene was too far into it, so I just gave up. " ( Trek: Deep Space Nine , p. 43) Butler wanted Roddenberry to change the title of the show from " Star Trek " to " Star Track ", feeling that the former was too pretentious, tedious, inert and boring. ( Starlog issue 117, p. 55; [4] ) " In that discussion, and others regarding the story's obscurity, Gene was not in the mood to receive any such input, " remembered the director. ( Starlog issue 117, p. 55)

  • After Robert Butler was drafted, some key members of the art department were also sought out. These were Pato Guzman , the art director from The Lucy Show , and Matt Jefferies , who was hired as the episode's assistant art director. Jefferies was initially assigned to design the Enterprise 's exterior, with Guzman deciding upon the look of the sets. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , pp. 27-28; The Making of Star Trek , pp. 78-79) One of the environments that Guzman designed was Captain Pike's quarters. ( The Art of Star Trek , p. 11) When he left amid the episode's pre-production phase (specifically, in October 1964), Guzman was replaced by Franz Bachelin , a veteran art director. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 101; Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 35) One set that was designed by both Guzman and Bachelin was the planet surface of Talos IV. ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary ) However, Matt Jefferies also worked on designing the sets, such as the cage-like environment that serves as the episode's namesake. ( The Art of Star Trek , p. 5) In fact, much to his frustration, designing the Enterprise 's exterior initially delayed Jefferies from planning the episode's sets. ( Star Trek Memories , p. 32) A great deal of effort went into scheming the sets, on paper, while the installment's shooting script was in development, spanning late summer and early autumn of 1964. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 78)

  • Costume Designer William Ware Theiss was fortunately available and was hired on the pilot with the task of designing, on a very limited budget, costumes that had to be different from any seen before on television. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 28)
  • In early October 1964, Robert H. Justman was interviewed for the post of associate producer on the pilot but turned it down, fearing that his post-production knowledge was not as extensive as it had to be for the episode, a response that lead to Byron Haskin instead being recruited as the pilot's associate producer. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , pp. 28-30; "The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary ) Justman meanwhile went back to working on The Outer Limits , on which he had worked with Byron Haskin.
  • The Star Trek pilot still required an assistant director. " The first Star Trek pilot needed a good one, " clarified Herb Solow. " I didn't want to use any first assistant [director] who'd worked with Bob Butler in the past, feeling that too much familiarity might be a disadvantage on this mind-boggling science-fiction pilot. " After Solow consulted producer and director friends (including his college classmate James Goldstone ) around Hollywood (irritatedly referring to the pilot as "a bitch"), he found that Robert Justman was the highest recommended candidate. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 31) Solow then convinced Leslie Stevens , Justman's boss on The Outer Limits and other projects, into permitting a temporary transfer of Justman to the Star Trek pilot, saying, " With prep time, the shooting, and some wrap-up, figure I'd be borrowing him for no more than a month at the most. " Stevens wanted Justman to serve as assistant director on his upcoming Esperanto language horror movie, Incubus , which coincidentally starred William Shatner . However, pre-production of Incubus went overdue, so Stevens loaned Justman to Desilu. Justman likewise believed his assignment on Star Trek was not going to be longer than six weeks and, when he returned to Desilu, he was surprised to find that no final shooting script was yet available for him, the teleplay undergoing one of Gene Roddenberry's many rewrites of the script. Justman began his work after he read through the latest rewrite, initiating the schedule and budget "breakdown" process. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 32) His role as this episode's assistant director made Justman responsible for a virtually endless series of critical production details. ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary )

  • When Director of Photography William E. Snyder became available, he brought his own camera crew and "lighting" gaffer with him. Although some sources cite Jerry Finnerman as having been the camera operator on this episode, the actual cameraman was Richard A. Kelley , according to both Robert Justman and the original crew sheet for the episode. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 36)
  • Locating a makeup supervisor who was equipped to tackle the pilot involved a challenging search. " It was apparent that we needed the best makeup man we could find, " explained Robert Justman. " There were numerous 'appliances' [latex or rubber prosthetics] that would have to be designed, built, and affixed, on a daily basis, to the actors who would portray non-human aliens […] Most makeup artists didn't have the prosthetic expertise we needed. " Also, Desilu had no makeup department of its own. Justman spoke about the project with Fred Phillips , a busy makeup man who had worked with him on The Outer Limits and several previous series. " I managed to spring him long enough to do our pilot, " concluded Justman. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 36)
  • Purchasing a laser cannon for this episode was of some difficulty. Herb Solow once commented that it was " tough to go down to the local hardware store or gun shop and buy one. " ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 20) The laser cannon prop was ultimately a modified camera dolly. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary )
  • The weirdness of Gene Roddenberry's requirements startled some of the advisors he attempted to consult. " Well, it was all so new and strange to them, " Roddenberry observed. " Like you call some unsuspecting production man on the phone, and he says, 'Hello,' and you say, 'What does it cost to paint a girl green?' You get a long silence! " ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 77)

  • When doing makeup tests for Vina as an Orion slave girl, Majel Barrett was used as a willing test subject. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 40) " I was cheap, I was there, and our guest star was not! " Barrett laughed in retrospect. " She would have had to be brought in and they would have had to test it [on her], and there just wasn't the money. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 27 , p. 43) This took place early in the episode's preproduction phase and it was Fred Phillips who applied the makeup to Barrett. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary ) However, the footage of these tests kept coming back without the green skin being visible. Puzzled by this, the makeup crew kept painting the actress again and again with other shades of green, hoping it would be visible on film. This went on for a period of three consecutive days. Afterward, the makeup artists discovered that the film processing lab was "de-coloring" her because they didn't know she was supposed to be green. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 40; The Making of Star Trek , pp. 77-78)
  • The first filmed scene from "The Cage" (and of Star Trek ) – the sequence with Dr. Boyce and Captain Pike sharing a martini – was filmed on Friday, 27 November 1964 . ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary )
  • Only a short stretch of corridor was built for this episode. This set can be seen, in its entirety, during the scene in which Pike heads through a passageway into his "cabin" (or quarters), passing a young couple. ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary )

  • The animation of two of the specimens in the Talosian menagerie – the anthropoid ape and the humanoid bird – was provided for by Janos Prohaska . ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary ) The ape creature originally appeared in The Outer Limits episode "Fun and Games", without its facial hair. Prohaska was brought in by Robert Justman, who had worked with him previously on the series. The owl-like bird creature, entirely designed and built by master craftsman Wah Chang , also appeared in a later episode of that series, "The Duplicate Man". ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 9 , pp. 71-72) Still, "Roddenberry's weirdness" of it all continued to befuddle Director Butler, as he recalled. " I remember there was some chicken – some killer fowl – being locked in some cell somewhere, and I'm talking to this stuntman – it's crazy, me talking to this Janos Prohaska, [who was] Hungarian or something…[saying], "Janos, okay that's good, baby, now try this." And there's this big chicken – this killer chicken – or some equivalent. I mean, it was nuts. " ( These Are the Voyages: TOS Season One , 1st ed, p. 60) Needless to say, the extended scenes were not utilized in the pilot as presented.
  • One of the imprisoned species is seen only by its shadow; the last cage in the zoo contains a large crab-like creature with huge claws. This was a shadow puppet, rendered with several fingers silhouetted against a lit background. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary )
  • The Talosian seen down the corridor as Pike looks at all the imprisoned creatures was a dwarf ( Felix Silla ). This gave the appearance of great length to what was actually a short, forced-perspective hallway. Bob Justman came up with this idea when they realized the budget wouldn't allow them to build a large hallway. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p 47)
  • The Talosian headpieces – complete with their bulging veins and small, round ears – were also created for this episode by craftsman Wah Chang, who (like Robert Justman, Byron Haskin and Fred Phillips) had previously worked on The Outer Limits . ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary ) The head prosthetics were blended into the actresses' own facial features by Phillips and his makeup staff. ( The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., p. 15)
  • The Talosians' elevator landing was built on a platform, allowing room for the lift to descend without having to excavate below the soundstage's floor. ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary )
  • A matte painting created by noted matte artist Albert Whitlock was used to portray the Rigel VII fortress, though these exterior shots also involved the filming of live-action footage on the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer back lot. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary )

  • While Susan Oliver was wearing her green Orion slave girl makeup, she became very tired. A doctor was called to the studio to give her a vitamin B shot. He went to her dressing room where, not having been informed of her appearance, he was greatly surprised to see that her complexion was green. The doctor was so flustered, in fact, that it took him nearly five minutes to simply identify an area to administer the shot. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 78)
  • The spearhead Pike uses to kill the Kalar on Rigel VII was a recycled prop from RKO Pictures . It measured approximately thirty inches in length and was seven and a half inches wide. ( Star Trek: The Original Series 365 , p. 011)
  • Robert Butler said in an interview with Star Trek Monthly that he wanted some dirt and rust on the sets, but Roddenberry vetoed this idea, claiming that everything must be clean and shiny. In another interview, Butler claimed that this was his basic reason for disliking Star Trek overall, calling it "too square-jawed, heroic" and "too worthy and clean" for his taste.   • The landing party jackets in this episode were fastened by long strips of black Velcro running down the entire length of the inside flap, visible in some of the scenes.
  • The belts were grey-colored elastic-type bands that had metal hook/clip fasteners at the front which held the communicator and hand weapon. They were worn over the shirt but under the jacket, at the waist.
  • When indicating the region of the Talos group on his viewscreen, Spock calls up a photograph of the Pleiades Cluster .
  • The scene inside the Rigel fortress was one of the last scenes to be shot for this episode. It was filmed on 14 December 1964 . Gene Roddenberry was present during the filming and model maker Richard C. Datin, Jr. also payed a visit to the set, presenting the three-foot USS Enterprise study model to Roddenberry, it eventually turning out to be a full-fledged filming model onto its own. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary , [5] )
  • This was the single most expensive episode ever created for the original Star Trek series. ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary ) According to several sources (including the The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., p. 17), NBC spent US$630,000 on this episode. According to Majel Barrett, however, there was only US$168,000 available for the pilot. ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 27 , p. 43) The episode's preproduction costs were reduced thanks to the use of rear-screen projection for images on the Enterprise 's main viewscreen. ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary ) Based upon extensive research author Marc Cushman had performed on the internal studio documentation used at the time, he has reported the budget and total cost at $452,000 (hugely debunking Barrett's earlier statement) and $616,000, respectively.   • Howard Anderson Company , the company responsible for all visual effects or "opticals" as they were called at the time, subcontracted the build of the Enterprise studio model to Richard Datin. Datin himself built the above-mentioned small three-foot that was originally intended to serve as a study model, but which ended up being used for filming nevertheless. The actual large eleven-foot filming model he himself had to sub-contract to Production Models Shop due to time pressure and lack of space in his workshop. ( Star Trek: Communicator  issue 132 , pp. 51-53 For a far more detailed treatise on the two models, see: Constitution -class model
  • The opening shot of this episode was filmed with the use of frame-by-frame stop-motion animation, in order to allow for the transition between the footage of the Enterprise model and the shot that was taken on the set for the starship's bridge. Due to the movement of the space vessel, the shot was necessarily very intricate and extraordinarily difficult to produce. It was created by the Howard Anderson Company. ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary ) The shot used the eleven-foot model of the Enterprise , while the other ship shots of this episode involved the three-foot miniature of the spacecraft. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary ) The shot was the very last to be produced and the only one where the large model was utilized, as it was only delivered to Anderson's on 29 December 1964 , after all other footage had approximately been completed a week earlier. ( Star Trek: Communicator  issue 132 , p. 54) The text commentary for "The Menagerie, Part I" refers to the shot's creation as " an outstanding achievement in television visual effects. "
  • The opening establishing shot of the Enterprise was reused in several early episodes: " Where No Man Has Gone Before ", " The Corbomite Maneuver ", " Mudd's Women ", " The Man Trap ", and " Charlie X ". The starship, traveling at warp speed, is depicted in a unique effect that was never re-created for the series; the camera "sidles up" to the Enterprise model and "swoops over" the top of the primary hull. Combined with this shot are two space effects: one of a stationary star field and the other of a star field moving rapidly, from right to left. The completed effect is meant to suggest that "local" stars are flying past the Enterprise while the great "backdrop" of the galaxy remains motionless.   • The effect of the laser cannon firing was an animation produced by the Howard Anderson Company. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary )
  • Majel Barrett felt that her perceived lack of "special effects" in this pilot episode was an indication that the finances provided for the pilot "didn't go very far." ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 27 , p. 43)
  • Upon first hearing the theme tune for this episode (which went on to serve as the theme music for the original Star Trek series), Robert Butler was impressed. He later reminisced, " The music was good; I remember that theme song was quite wonderful […] I remember liking it when I heard it. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 6 , p. 53) Alexander Courage provided not only this thematic composition as well as the episode's score but also created the sounds of the singing plants . ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary , TOS Season 1 DVD ; et al.)
  • The musical score of this episode has been released on CD, tied with the score of the episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before". The first official release came in 1988. It was later expanded, restored and remastered for disc 1 of the Star Trek: The Original Series Soundtrack Collection .

Reception and aftermath [ ]

  • One of the first occasions on which word of this episode reached the press was following NBC's approval of the pilot script; while Gene Roddenberry and Herb Solow were celebrating the confirmation during lunch with their daily Cobb salad at the Hollywood Brown Derby on Vine Street, Dave Kaufman – a television reporter and columnist for Daily Variety – passed by their table on his way back to his office and Solow notified him of the news. However, the cheerful Kaufman replied, " I knew it before you did. " After leaning over to engage Roddenberry in a handshake, Kaufman repeatedly asked who would be producing the pilot, doubting that Desilu was up to the task. Roddenberry and Solow acknowledged Kaufman's remarks and he wished them good luck before exiting. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , pp. 26-27)
  • The first view of the completed pilot was at a special screening for the episode's cast and crew. " I remember the screening and the special effects and the makeup were just perfect, " remarked J.M. Colt actress Laurel Goodwin, " Everyone was applauding when we saw the transporter effect put together. When you shoot it, of course, they just stop the camera and you walk off. But on film, it was so great. " ( Star Trek: Communicator  issue 119 , p. 59)
  • NBC rejected the episode, following its production, and declared it was "too cerebral." Robert Butler found he could relate to this statement. " Apparently, the network, at its level, was feeling exactly as I did, " he remarked. ( Starlog issue 117, p. 55) According to Gene Roddenberry, he had a similar response to the news. " I sort of understood [NBC's verdict], " he said. " I wrote and produced what I thought was a highly imaginative idea, and I realized I had gone too far. I should actually have ended it with a fistfight between the hero and the villain if I wanted it on television […] because that's the way shows were being made at the time. The great mass audience would say, 'Well, if you don't have a fistfight when it's ended, how do we know that's the finish?,' and things like that. " ( The Star Trek Interview Book , p. 10) Besides finding the episode too intellectual, NBC also cited criticisms such as the presence of a female first officer on the bridge and the character of Spock being too alien for audiences of the time. ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 6 , pp. 14, 20, 52; et al.)
  • However, the "myth" of the network wanting to eliminate the female first officer was debunked by Herb Solow and Robert H. Justman in Inside Star Trek: The Real Story . In the book, they state that NBC supported the idea of a strong woman in a leading role, they only rejected Majel Barrett, feeling the actress is not talented enough to pull off such a role, and "carry" a show as co-star. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 60)
  • NBC was also not satisfied with the majority of the actors. They wrote, " We also think you can do better with the ship's doctor, the yeoman and other members of the crew ". Solow decided to hire a full-time casting director for the next pilot, and eventually the series. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , pp. 60-61)
  • Another aspect of the pilot which NBC was very worried with, was its "overall eroticism", most notably the "scantily clad green dancing girls with the humps and grinds". This was a major factor for not choosing " Mudd's Women ", which dealt with "an intergalactic pimp selling beautiful women hookers throughout the galaxy", to be the second pilot. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , pp. 59-61, 65-66)
  • Oscar Katz was pleased with this pilot episode. ( The Star Trek Interview Book , p. 10) However, Lucille Ball was seemingly uninterested in it. Herb Solow offered, " The day the completed pilot was screened for NBC on the West Coast, I walked into Lucy's dressing room to tell her NBC's reaction. The pilot script was still there, apparently untouched. " ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , p. 22)
  • DeForest Kelley viewed this episode around the same time it was being shown to studio executives. He told Gene Roddenberry, " Well, I don't know what the hell it's all about, but it's either gonna be the biggest hit or the biggest miss God ever made. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 18 , p. 18)
  • Despite the numerous nitpicks they had with this episode, NBC made the extraordinary (and, at the time, rare) move to order a second pilot, " Where No Man Has Gone Before ". For that subsequent pilot, the briefing room , transporter room and bridge were kept much the same as they are in this historic first attempt (although the bridge doors and other bridge features were painted red, and several smaller modifications were made). However, the only actor to be reused from this episode was Leonard Nimoy. In reference to Number One and Spock, Gene Roddenberry once joked about how he kept the alien character and later married the woman, noting, " I couldn't have legally done it the other way around. " ( Inside Star Trek ) Majel Barrett commented, " To be fired from the job and then see it come back 30 years later made me feel kind of good, but at the time I wasn't happy. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 27 , p. 43)
  • After Jeffrey Hunter's wife convinced the actor that science fiction was "beneath him," Gene Roddenberry – planning to cast William Shatner for the second pilot – arranged for himself and Shatner to watch this episode in Los Angeles. ( The Star Trek Interview Book , pp. 10 & 16) " When I walked out [of the viewing] I remember thinking it was a very imaginative and vital idea, " Shatner recalled. " I thought everybody took themselves a little too seriously. " Shatner not only thought that the episode lacked humor but was also of the opinion that its cast had overacted their parts, to the point of being unrealistic. " That was my impression, " he admitted, " and we spoke about that. " ( The Star Trek Interview Book , p. 16)
  • Fred Freiberger was highly impressed with the episode and, in 1988 , he expressed surprise that the outing had been rejected by NBC. " I fell in love with [it] […] To me, 'The Cage' was pure science fiction, " he enthused. " That's what the show should have been […] 'The Cage' was what the series was all about. At that time people didn't accept it. " ( The Star Trek Interview Book , pp. 162-163)
  • In her 1994 autobiography Beyond Uhura (pp. 139 & 140), Nichelle Nichols comments on this installment, stating, " Viewing it today […] the show stands as the purest earliest representation of what Gene hoped Star Trek would achieve. " She also characterizes the episode as " not only the basic pattern for countless future Star Trek episodes but a blueprint for the future of civilization " and describes the episode's conclusion as "an intelligent, peaceful resolution."
  • In 1996 , Grace Lee Whitney cited this as one of her favorite TOS episodes (along with " Charlie X ", " The Devil in the Dark " and " The City on the Edge of Forever "). ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 19 , p. 32)
  • The following year, Majel Barrett similarly named this as one of her two favorite episodes of TOS (the other being "The City on the Edge of Forever") and said that she thought both of them "are more Star Trek than anything else that has been conceived." Of this episode specifically, she enthused, " I thought it was beautiful. People still ask me, 'What is your favorite episode? no question, it would have to be 'The Cage' […] [It] was pure Star Trek . " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 27 , pp. 43 & 44)
  • A black-and-white 16mm print of this episode was owned by Gene Roddenberry and was shown by him at speaking engagements and conventions. One of these events was "Tricon" – 1966's World Science Fiction Convention in Cleveland, Ohio – whose attendees included Allan Asherman , a future writer of Star Trek reference works. Due to popular demand, the black-and-white version of this episode was shown after "Where No Man Has Gone Before". ( The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., pp. 1 & 3) The event was the first convention that Roddenberry took the Star Trek pilots to. ( The Star Trek Interview Book , p. 11) Asherman later wrote how he had been impressed by the "serious and imaginative detail" in this episode, a facet he believed it shared with the later pilot. He went on to comment, " In addition there were the laser cannon opticals, the superb Talosian makeups, and another interesting musical score. Its most outstanding characteristics were the intelligence of its story, its polished production values, and the performances of its actors. " ( The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., pp. 1, 3)
  • The master color 35mm negative of "The Cage" was cut into the master negative of "The Menagerie" in 1966, and the trims not used were subsequently lost. No color or 35mm print of "The Cage" was known to exist, only the black-and-white print owned by Gene Roddenberry, who continued to exhibit the footage at various Star Trek conventions throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.
  • "The Cage" was initially released on home video in late 1986 , in celebration of Star Trek 's 20th anniversary. The release was a combination of the color footage used in "The Menagerie" and the additional scenes in Roddenberry's black-and-white print. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary ; et al .)
  • In 1987, film archivist Bob Furmanek discovered the missing trims from the color 35mm negative of "The Cage" at a Hollywood film laboratory, and saw that they were returned to Paramount. However, the soundtrack trims were not found. When restoring "The Cage", Paramount used the soundtrack from "The Menagerie" for most scenes, and the soundtrack of Roddenberry's 16mm print (which was of lower audio quality) for the restored trims.   • A full-color version of this installment was aired on 4 October 1988 , with a two-hour special called The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation To The Next bookending it. The special was hosted by Patrick Stewart and traced the history of Star Trek from "The Cage" throughout the first season of TNG and the beginnings of production for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier . The opportunity to broadcast "The Cage" in its original form came when production of Star Trek: The Next Generation was interrupted due to a Writers' Guild strike. The broadcast filled in for two of the four hours missing from TNG's truncated second season .
  • The Keeper's voice ( Malachi Throne ) used in "The Cage" was modified for "The Menagerie", in which Throne guest-starred as Commodore Mendez. ("The Menagerie, Part II" text commentary ) When the color and black-and-white versions were spliced together in 1986, The Keeper's original voice was heard in the black-and-white footage and the altered voice in the color footage taken from "The Menagerie". This voice discrepancy persists in the "restored" all-color version of "The Cage" in the TOS Season 3 DVD set, even though it would have been entirely possible to substitute the original audio from the 16mm print for the Keeper's lines in footage taken from "The Menagerie". Conversely, the remastered version included on the 3rd season Blu-ray Disc set has the Keeper's dialogue from the black and white footage digitally pitched up to more closely match the altered voice track heard in the color footage.
  • This episode's depiction of the Rigel VII fortress is one of the most-recognized and celebrated matte paintings in Star Trek history. The same painting was reused (unaltered) in the third season, as Flint 's home in " Requiem for Methuselah ". In addition, the large moon in the background of the painting was the inspiration for a song called " Moon over Rigel VII ", which Captain Kirk recommends as a campfire song in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier .   • Footage of the asteroids from the beginning of this episode was reused later, in " Mudd's Women " and " The Doomsday Machine ".
  • Throughout most of the first and second seasons, the "singing plant" sound heard on Talos IV became the standard background noise on various planets. Beginning with " Spectre of the Gun ", a different, warbly sound was used for a number of the remaining shows. The sound was used as the transporter beam sound effect in the series proper.
  • In his introduction for the 1986 VHS release of "The Cage" (which can now be seen on the DVD version in the third season set), Gene Roddenberry noted that he wanted no-one aboard the Enterprise to smoke. This was despite the fact that tobacco advertising was a major revenue source for the television networks in 1964. Even one of Star Trek 's sponsors, during its first season, was Viceroy cigarettes. (All tobacco advertising was banned from television and radio on 1 January 1971 ). Seventeen years later, Patrick Stewart would appear on-screen smoking a cigarette in " The Big Goodbye ", although Picard was shown choking on it.
  • Herman Zimmerman commented: " From my point of view, Gene Roddenberry created, without being maudlin, an eternal idealization of the future. The characters that he created came out of his imagination pretty much whole cloth. You could compare "The Cage" to Sign of Four , which was written by Arthur Conan Doyle . Sherlock Holmes and Watson and Moriarty and Lestrade and the Baker Street Irregulars have a charm and an identity that are immediately discernible from that very first novel ".   • Zimmerman found similarities between "The Cage" and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's pilot episode, " Emissary ". Zimmerman commented, " 'The Cage' was a brilliant piece of science fiction work – especially for when it was done. 'The Emissary' is equally as good. " ( Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages , pp. 40-41)
  • The same was true (if only for one scene) for Michael Piller , who commented, " I haven't seen 'The Cage' in years, but what brings to mind the memory of it is the imagination that takes you out of that locked cage – Gene's imagination. It takes you into green fields and the picnic and Susan Oliver and those wonderful moments. I would be lying if I did not say that image was with me when I wrote " Emissary ". I don't remember much about it. I don't remember the story, but I remember that friendly green pasture. " ( Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages , p. 19)
  • In a 1993 interview, Rick Berman revealed, " I've never seen 'The Cage'. I've seen little pieces of it. " ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 23, No. 6, p. 22)
  • When this episode was re-released on VHS in 1996, Star Trek Monthly  issue 16 , p. 57 rated the episode 3 out of 5 stars (defined as "Warp Speed") and regarded it as a "now classic story."
  • Similarly, Cinefantastique scored the episode 3 out of 4 stars in 1996. ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 27, No. 11/12, p. 26)
  • In their 1998 book Trek Navigator: The Ultimate Guide to the Entire Trek Saga (p. 29), co-writers Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross both individually rate this episode 4 out of 5 stars (defined as "Classic!").

Continuity [ ]

  • This episode is difficult to reconcile with canon in many instances. For example, Spock smiles and uses several Human expressions (for example, "buzzing about down there"), which he seldom does in subsequent episodes and films. In the series, he instead has the emotional control and genius level intellect present in the character of Number One here. This change was actually due to the fact that, in contrast to Jeffrey Hunter's portrayal of Captain Pike, Leonard Nimoy found William Shatner as Captain Kirk had his own energy, animation, and exuberance, so Nimoy felt like he was able to be more reserved and internalized in the series than in this pilot. ( Mind Meld: Secrets Behind the Voyage of a Lifetime , et al.) Nonetheless, the scene of Spock smiling was included in " The Menagerie ", with Kirk later making a brief reference to Spock's emotions, though the moment itself is not commented upon directly.

  • More than half a century later, Michael Chabon wrote the Star Trek: Short Treks episode " Q&A " to provide an in-universe explanation for the differences between Spock's behavior and manner in this episode and in the rest of the original series. ( "Michael Chabon Explains His New Short Trek 's Connections to The Next Generation and Picard" at SyFy Wire ) Chabon wrote that "apart from the ears and the gull-wing eyebrows, the Spock who served under Captain Pike was nothing like the Spock who later launched a thousand zines."
  • Pike tells the Talosians that he's from a stellar group "at the other end of this galaxy," which, in modern Star Trek parlance, implies that Talos IV is deep in the Beta , Gamma or Delta Quadrants – anywhere but the Alpha Quadrant which it is established as being in in " If Memory Serves ". This does not seem likely, especially because the SS Columbia was lost for only eighteen years and, having traveled at less than light speed, must be relatively close to Earth. In fact, Harvey P. Lynn , who served as Gene Roddenberry's unofficial technical adviser on the pilot, told him that traveling from one end of the galaxy to the other would take an impossibly long time. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 92)

The Enterprise

  • Tyler implies that faster-than-light (FTL) travel is relatively new. He tells one of the scientists that they can get back to Earth quickly. " The time barrier's been broken! Our new ships can… " Earlier, with an expression used only once in the series, Pike orders FTL speed to Talos IV by saying, " Our time warp, factor 7. " Basically, this establishes that warp speed is not only FTL, but also "negates" the time dilation effect about which Einstein theorized in his Special Theory of Relativity. Of course, later Star Trek canon establishes that Zefram Cochrane "discovered" the space warp in the mid-21st century. "The Cage" takes place two centuries later, in 2254.
  • Spock's cry of " Switch to rockets , we're blasting out! " is very anachronistic – there are no direct references to rocket engines in the episodes to come.
  • Dwight Eisenhower , John F. Kennedy , and Lyndon Johnson make the only contemporary presidential appearances in an original series episode here, as images in the Talosian download of the ship's computer .
  • As opposed to the electronic clipboards used in the regular series, Pike uses a very 20th century metal clipboard. A television also appears in his quarters.
  • A "captain's hat" can be glimpsed, in passing, on top of that television, although Pike never wears it, and after this pilot, the hat was never seen again, though similar caps later appeared in Star Trek Into Darkness and in Carol Freeman 's ready room in Star Trek: Lower Decks .
  • Landing party jackets also vanished after "The Cage", but returned in Star Trek: The Motion Picture , also appearing in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier . Star Trek: Enterprise was the only other television Star Trek that depicted hats and a variety of environment-specific outerwear being regularly issued to crew members.
  • Judging by the shape of the wall and the window, Pike's quarters seem to be directly below the bridge; there are no other curved windows on the saucer section of the model.
  • The bed in Pike's quarters was far too short for Jeffrey Hunter. His feet are extending well beyond the end of the mattress, as he briefly reclines on it.
  • The sign next to the door of the captain's quarters reads simply "Captain." When the series went into production, Captain Kirk's name was put on the nameplate outside his quarters.
  • The pants that the crew wear have a very conspicuous pleat down the front and seem to be a shade of dark blue-grey.
  • At the end of "The Menagerie, Part II", Kirk sees Pike and Vina – with their illusions of youth and beauty – running off, hand in hand. This is an example of the reused footage from this episode. Here, it is an illusion of Pike who the Talosians have provided for Vina to keep her company. In "The Menagerie, Part II", it is the "real" Pike (or rather the non-physical consciousness of the now-disabled Pike) rejoining Vina to start a new life.
  • In one brief part of the first transportation sequence, the transporter chief's assistant is a man wearing glasses , but the scene changes and he appears without them. This is one of only three occasions where Starfleet officers are shown wearing corrective eyeglasses.
  • Although Pike cites the crew complement as 203 other lives besides his own, the Enterprise 's total crew complement was increased to 428 in " Charlie X ", and 430 in later episodes. DIS : " Brother ", however, confirms that, at the time of Pike's mission, the ship had 203 crewmembers.
  • This episode's depiction of a parkland near Mojave is the only time that 23rd century Earth is ever seen in the entirety of the original Star Trek series. Given that this is merely an illusion created by the Talosians, the first appearance of the real Earth of the 23rd century was in TAS : " One of Our Planets Is Missing ", in which scenery from Earth is shown to a cloud creature from the ship's library computer . However, it is not shown in live-action until Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979 .
  • "The Menagerie, Part II" establishes that, following the events of this episode, the Federation imposed General Order 7 on the Talos system, preventing anyone from ever approaching the planet again, under penalty of death .

  • Roddenberry actually almost uses the term "forbidden planet" ( the one forbidden world in all the galaxy ) in his teleplay for "The Menagerie", thereby coming close to admitting how much of "The Cage" was actually "stolen" by him from the 1956 movie of that name, including: setting the action in the 23rd century; the visual design of the starship (the flying saucer design of the C-57D spaceship in the movie becoming the saucer section of the USS Enterprise ); the military organisation of the crew; their Navy-style uniforms; setting the action on an alien planet; the planet's name Altair IV, which became Talos IV; the mental powers of the Krell, which became (only slightly altered) the mental powers of the Keeper; and the energy weapons of the Cruiser's crew, which became the Star Trek hand phasers. The 1956 film also uses, as its main cast, the spaceship's captain, first officer, and medical officer: the command structure which Roddenberry lifted as the basis for the main cast on Star Trek .
  • Additionally, a few novels have theorized as to the cause for the vast differences between Spock's highly emotional behavior in this episode and his reservedness in the regular series of Star Trek . Examples of this include Spock possibly not having complete control of his emotions at that point, as he was still quite young, and that he achieved full control of his emotions by observing Captain Pike. In fact, the novel Burning Dreams establishes that indeed, whether Pike liked it or not, Spock did consider him a mentor and so Pike tried his best to live up to that assignment. Burning Dreams also establishes that Spock yelled early in his career because he was under the mistaken impression that Humans couldn't hear him unless he did. The novel The Fire and the Rose establishes that Spock was simply emulating Human behaviors such as smiles, and that there was truly no emotion behind his own smile. He eventually stopped though when his crewmates came to distrust him, believing him not to be truthful about himself to them.
  • Burning Dreams delves much deeper not only into Pike's life before and after Talos, but also Vina's, establishing her to have been a singer and a dancer, who was lovers with the real Theodore Haskins. In fact, before the Enterprise 's arrival, she spent much time in illusion, dreaming that Columbia had successfully returned to Earth and she led a dance troupe afterward. The novel also establishes that Vina stood up to the Talosians, demanding that they never refer to her as a 'specimen' again and she was just as important as them, perhaps moreso, because their plans for Pike depended on her. During the Rigel VII illusion, she played the "damsel in distress" role effectively, although she hated female characters that screamed like she had to do.
  • A cat version of "The Cage" was featured in Jenny Parks ' 2017 book Star Trek Cats .

  • Originally intended for airing in syndication on 26 April 2008 , the remastered version of the episode was removed from the schedule the week before its intended airdate, but was rescheduled for 2 May 2009 , partly as a tie-in with the release of Star Trek . [14] The remastered episode is also included in the TOS-R Season 3 DVD and TOS Season 3 Blu-ray sets, along with the original 1986 color-black/white release presented by Gene Roddenberry in its original ("unaltered") format.

The crews of the various iterations of Star Trek boldly went where no one has gone before — and then boldly met a crap ton of alien species.

Star Trek may be the human adventure, but there have been countless non-human beings, critters, menaces, gods, and blobs that have been introduced in the Star Trek  universe. From The Original Series to The Animated Series , to The Next Generation , to Deep Space Nine , the Delta Quadrant and Voyager , to the early adventures of Enterprise , to the modern day films, Star Trek has gifted fans with unforgettable species after species as the five-year mission has turned into five decades of first contact.

There have been vile races bred for combat, omnipotent races that use humankind as puppets, and even a bunch of cute little furry things.  Star Trek just keeps on delivering the cool aliens show after show, film after film. Just imagine the species that will soon be coming to Star Trek: Discovery ! But now is the time to celebrate the past as we present the fifty coolest Star Trek aliens ever to appear in films or TV.

50. Arcturian

First appearance: star trek: the motion picture (1979).

The Arcturian didn’t have a great deal of Star Trek screen time, but this alien race that resembled melted wax (eww) makes our list because it stands as a prime example of the story richness of the Star Trek  galaxy. An Arcturian can briefly be seen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the Mego toy company even made two versions of this blink and you’ll miss him creature (one 3 ¾ inch one 12 inch). But what intrigues us the most is this melty guy’s backstory…

Star Trek costume crafters extraordinaire Fred Phillips and Robert Fletcher came up with a rich history for the Arcturian. According to Philips and Fletcher, the Arcturians were actually a race of clones that made up the bulk of the Federation’s infantry. While never seen on screen, there are legions of these guys running around, just waiting to be sent to some hostile planet to go to war. The Federation has always been portrayed as peaceful and benevolent, but it has the potential to unleash billions of melty looking monsters at a moment’s notice. Yikes.

Arcturians also appeared in the Star Trek daily comic strip and their back story continues to stand as a great example of the vast richness of the Star Trek galaxy, a place where billions of stories exist at all times. Including one about a race of wax soldiers that can be replicated and sent to do the Federation’s will. Eeep.

49. Edosian

First appearance: star trek: the animated series “beyond the farthest star” (1973).

Edosians are a tripedal species and are skilled at using their three arms and three legs in navigation and piloting. Lieutenant Arex, the loyal Enterprise navigator that first appeared in Star Trek: The Animated Series , is a proud member of the Edosian species and was a recurring character during this era of animated Trek. Arex was voiced by Scotty himself James Doohan and was a standout character in the era between The Original Series and The Next Generation .

Arex popped up in comics and novels and took his place of honor among the original crew. Arex also was a character that fully utilized animation as the six limbs and distinct alien features of this character would have been impossible to pull off in live-action back in the day. But thanks to The Animated Series , the distinctive Edosians live on and prosper in Trek lore.

48. Excalbians

First appearance: star trek: the original series “the savage curtain” (1969).

Listen, any species responsible for bringing Abraham Lincoln into the Star Trek  universe has to make this list. The Excalbians are a silicon based life form that possessed the ability to shape shift. These rock beings, who honestly looked like something Steve Ditko would have designed for Doctor Strange, were fascinated by the human notion of good and evil.

So they did what anyone would do in the same situation: they made a recreation of Abraham Lincoln and teamed it with Kirk, Spock, and famous Vulcan goodie-good Surak and sent them up against four representatives of evil — Kahless the Unforgettable of Qo’noS, Genghis Khan, Colonel Green of Earth and Dr. Zora of Tiburon. How’s that for a traditional Survivor Series match?

For this wonderful bit of schlock and for making us believe that Ben Grimm could work in live action in 1969, we salute the ever curious Excalbians.

47. Caitian

First appearance: star trek: the animated series “the survivor” (1973).

The cat-like Caitians were represented in Enterprise history by M’Ress, a feline female that served both as engineer and a communications officer during The Animated Series . M’Ress spoke in a purring voice and was a skilled operative that stood side by side with the more iconic members of the Enterprise.

Now, I would like to talk about how cool the Caitians were. I would like to talk about how M’Ress was the main character in the Power Records’ Star Trek book and record set Star Trek: Passage to Moauv (1975). I would also like to talk about how a Caitian also appeared in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home …

But I just can’t help but wonder if Captain Kirk did what he does and somehow at some point bed down with this cat woman. This would make Kirk’s TV sci-fi’s first furry and I’m sort of fascinated by this idea. I don’t want to focus on this idea because it kind of reduces M’ress as a character and the Caitian as a race… But then I read that the alien twins that Kirk hooked up with in the first Abramsverse film were confirmed to be Caitian and everything just stirs up again and I fell absolved of all responsibility.

Anyway, M‘Ress and the Caitians might be considered obscure now, but she was a pretty big deal to Trek lore during The Animated Series era. So this race is a purr-fect addition to our list. Did the Enterprise come equipped with a giant litter box? Okay, I need to stop now; this is going to some bad places.

46. Bolians

First appearance: star trek: the next generation (1988).

The Bolians have been a perennial background species since their first Trek appearance in 1988. The first Bolian fans witnesses aboard the Enterprise was an ambassador, but many other Bolians have appeared around the Trek verse since. They have been seen as barbers, manicurists, Federation troops, and high ranking officials.

Bolians are distinctive due to their blue skin and their ridge that bisects their anatomy. They are highly friendly individuals and compassionate. In fact, an episode of Voyager puts forth that Bolians were  supportive of assisted suicide. These deep seated beliefs make the Bolians an intriguing species ripe for future Trek exploration.

45. Lurian

First appearance: star trek: deep space nine “the emissary” (1993).

Lurians were a very rarely encountered species that possessed multiple hearts, lungs, and stomachs. Fans got to know this ellusive species through DS9 regular/bar fly Morn. Yes, Morn is an anagram for Norm, because, like the famed Cheers fat man, in Quark’s Bar, everyone knew Morn’s name.

Morn was a bombastic and talkative fellow who fans never got to actually hear speak. He was a former thief that barely moved away from his bar stool. Morn was also fiercely loyal to Quark and got his little Ferengi pal out of many a jam. But mostly, Morn just sat there and drank stoically.

Although we only ever met one Lurian, we will always remember his name because Morn was such a constant (and inebriated) presence on Deep Space Nine . He also once had a torrid love affair with Jadzia Dax but that is a tale for another time. Raise a glass to the Lurians!

First appearance: Star Trek (2009)

So far, the rebooted Trek films have not really given funs much by way of alien species. The only classic races to get good screen time in the reboots have been Romulans and Vulcans. But the films did give us Keenser the Roylan, Scotty’s diminutive engineering pal.

Keenser first appeared in the first Trek reboot film as Scotty’s ever present companion when Scotty was exiled on the Federation outpost on Delta Vega. When Scotty beamed to the Enterprise, he left Keenser behind which was kinda sad. JJ Abrams and company must have thought so too as Keenser was all of a sudden part of the Enterprise’s crew in Star Trek: Into Darkness .

Keensar is ever loyal to his pal Scotty as the two share one of the best bromances in the galaxy. The fourteenth issue of IDW Publishing’s Star Trek comic gifted fans with Keensar’s origin. It also revealed the name of his species — Roylan — for the first time.

In this issue, fans learned that Keensar was constantly mocked by his peers because he was so tall (heh). It also revealed that Keensar served with distinction aboard the USS Kelvin and was shipmates with none other than George Kirk.

Keensar the Roylan is a constant presence in the new Trek Universe and I’m sure this member of the Roylan species will have many adventures to come.

43. Mugato

First appearance: star trek: the original series “a private little war” (1968).

Because sometimes in space, there are giant, poisonous horned gorillas. What’s not to love about Mugato? He’s kind of cute, very fuzzy, and is as poisonous as the nastiest snake. Poisonous gorillas in space, this is why we love Trek. Sadly, Mugato only appeared briefly, attacking and poisoning Kirk before being disintegrated by Doctor McCoy.

But, remember: as you watch the hard sci-fi and techno jargon of Trek, as you witness the human adventure of Roddenberry’s galaxy, as you watch carbon-based life forms achieve full potential and enlightenment, remember , in this same world there are fuzzy, horned, albino gorillas that will poison the crap out of you.

42. Acamarians

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “the vengeance factor” (1989).

The Acamarians are an advanced race of humanoids that have found a peaceful existence very late in its history. For centuries, the tattooed Acamarians lived in rival clans and their planet was split apart by warfare. One of the clan wars lasted three centuries and wiped one of the combating sides out of existence. When Picard’s Enterprise encountered the Acamarians, the people finally almost found peace.

However, a splinter group known as the Gatherers could not overcome centuries of clan warfare and refused to negotiate, so Picard had to navigate the complex web of Acamarians politics and bitterness as well as the assassination of the Gatherer ambassador to finally forge a peace with the Acamarians.

Despite all these issues, the Acamarians have a rich culture and mirror many contemporary Earth societies that have been splintered by war. Sci-fi works best when it reflects reality, and through the Acamarians, Trek fans got to see some really effective social commentary about tribalism and societal bitterness.

41. Denobulans

First appearance: enterprise “broken bow” (2001).

A Denobulan served aboard the very first Enterprise as the ship’s doctor, thus making the species vital to the origins of the Federation. Our medic in question, Phlox by name, was one of the main protagonists in Enterprise and was a staunch example of the exemplary qualities of the Denobulan race.

Denobulans are loyal but quite hedonistic by human standards. Denobulan males can take up to three wives while the entire race embraces polyamory. As humanity headed off into space aboard the first Enterprise, Phlox served as a constant reminder of the varied belief systems and practices the people of Earth would encounter as space exploration began.

Phlox and the Denobulan held ethics in high regard as Phlox would never allow a sentient being to suffer. Even though the ridge faced Denobulans had fierce tempers, they also were gentle and kind, and valued knowledge and pleasure over confrontation and violence.

Denobulans also have the propensity to puff out their faces when they were threatened — so, yeah, there’s that. Plus, Denobulans have really long tongues. What was it that I said about hedonism and Denobulans? Anyway, these cunning linguists were great doctors as seen through Enterprise ’s first mayor of the sickbay: Doctor Phlox.

40. Orions

First appearance: star trek: the original series “the cage” (1966).

The green Orion slave dancer that shimmied into the dreams of Trek fans has been an iconic bit of Star Trek lore since her Shakiraesque debut, but the history of the Orions did not stop there…

Although a cosplay staple, the slave girl was just one Orion. Others have appeared in The Animated Series , Enterprise , novels, comics, toys, and one even prominently appeared in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek timeline as Uhura’s roommate and an early romantic partner of one James T. Kirk.

Orions are a species with close ties to the Federation — ties that are explored in some of the better episodes of Enterprise . Although the Orions will long be remembered because of the grinding of the hips of a slave dancer, there is so much more to this green-skinned humanoid species that has been part of Star Trek lore since almost day one.

39. Ocampans

First appearance star trek: voyager “caretaker part ii” (1995).

The Ocampans carry an importance to the Star Trek  universe because Kes, a noted member of the Ocampan species, was a member of the lost Voyager crew for three years. Ocampans are a race with powerful telekinetic powers but, sadly, this race of elf-like humanoids only have a life span of nine years. (So… combine Jean Grey with a mayfly and you get the idea.) 

Ocampans are very accepting of their short life span and a rather enlightened species. Through Kes, the crew of Voyager learned a lust for life as the wide eyed Ocampan enjoyed every minute of her existance even though she was trapped with the Voyager crew. When Kes’ power grew out of control, she left Voyager and her friends, including her constant companion Neelix, and used her abilities to push the lost Voyager out of Borg space and a year closer to home. This sacrifice taught the crew of the Voyager and fans of the show the innate nobility of the Ocampan race.

38. Vidiians

First appearance star trek voyager “the phage” (1995).

While the Ocampans were a nice, little, Tinkerbell-like species that fluttered about Voyager , there were also these Wes Craven nightmares… The Vidiians suffered a disease known as the Phage. The Phage is kind of like a hardcore space Ebola that utterly destroys the infected’s body and organs. So, yeah, Bones McCoy was sort of right about space being a petri dish of death and pain.

The ravaged Phage would wander the galaxy and rob sentients of their organs and body parts. So there you are, doing warp three with caution around the Delta Quadrant, and, all of a sudden, a few Vidiians beam unto your ship and rip out your liver and intestines. Then, they use said liver and intestines to replace their own — whether you filled out your Federation organ donor cards or not.

The Vidiians were eventually cured by the crew of the Voyager, but you have to assume that in a galaxy so big there are still some Vidiians cruising around out there taking hearts and lungs from innocent travelers. Yeesh.

37. Breen

First appearance: star trek deep space nine “indiscretion” (1995).

First off, cool points for the Breen because the helmet that this species wears looks kind of like the helmet Princess Leia used to disguise herself as a bounty hunter in Return of the Jedi . But the space awesomeness of the Breen doesn’t end there…

The Breen’s fighting prowess and technology are so advanced that even the Romulons and Klingon talk about this mysterious species in hushed whispers. And, indeed, when the Breen made themselves known to the Federation during the Dominion War, things got intense. These mighty warriors allied themselves with the Cardassians and the Dominion to take on the combined might of the Federation, the Klingons, and the Romulons.

During this conflict, the Breen destroyed the USS Defiant, the flagship of the Deep Space Nine space station, and managed to attack the Earth city of San Francisco. The Federation managed to develop counter weaponry to defeat the Breen, but many will remember these armored badassess as race of military specialists to be reckoned with.

The alliance with the Dominion cost the Breen, though, and — after the War — it wasn’t easy being Breen.

36. Hunters

First appearance star trek deep space nine : “captive pursuit” (1993).

Imagine a Trek alien that is pretty much Boba Fett mixed with Kraven the Hunter and you have these big game-tracking motherfuckers. The Hunters popped out of the Bajoran Wormhole and had their first contact with the Federation in the DS9 episode “Captive Pursuit.” In this stirring installment of this reporter’s favorite Trek show, fans were introduced to the Hunters and their chosen prey: the genetically enhanced Tosk.

The Hunters (whether this was the species name is unknown) would alter their Tosk prey in order to make the hunt more difficult. The pursuing of the Tosk was an obsession with the Hunters that rubbed members of the freedom loving Federation the wrong way.

The Hunters even gave the Federation a run for its money as the race of killers had advanced tech to assist them in their eternal hunt for Tosk. Sadly, the Hunters only appeared in one episode of Deep Space Nine , but their fighting skills and bloodthirsty rituals will be burned into the minds of Trek fans for a long time.

35. The Salt Vampire

First appearance: star trek: the original series “the man trap” (1966).

Old Salty here, or creature M-113, is a reminder that space can be a really, really dangerous place because there are things out there called Salt Vampires. And, no, this thing doesn’t just hang around a Pringles factory, it freakin’ shape shifts and then kills innocent people and drains them of their salt. Kirk and his crew first encountered this thing as it took the form of a number of the Enterprise’s crew. It almost killed Sulu, Yeoman Rand, Spock, and Kirk before being shot and killed by Dr. McCoy who had no time for such foolishness.

I suppose Kirk could have kept the Salt Vampire alive and just fed it Wetzel’s Pretzels (those things are like licking the ocean), but I guess Kirk felt that a shape shifting thing that looks like it was spat out of the ninth plane of hell that brutally kills people and drains them of sodium probably needed to be deleted from the universe. One has to wonder what special M-114 might be: Cinnamon Vampire?

34. Cheron

First appearance star trek: the original series “let that be your last battlefield” (1969).

When we first met the Cheron, there was only two members of this species left: Bele (played by the Riddler himself, the great Frank Gorshin) and Lokai. Bele was hunting Lokai whom Bele deemed a traitor after the planet Cheron was wiped out due to centuries of racial wars.

Apparently, some Cheron were black on the left and white on the right while other members of this advanced species possessed the opposite skin alignment. Due to this difference, the entire population — save Lokai and Bele — were eradicated. Bele hijacked the Enterprise and used his vast array of mental capabilities to hunt for Lokai.

The whole opposite was a thinly veiled, but powerful allusion to the destructive potential and sheer idiocy of racism — a message as powerful today as it was in the ’60s. Of course, you know I’m going to say that Mego made a Cheron doll, a toy I treasured in my childhood and called Oreo Man.

We should all have an Oreo Man during our most innocent years. But who knew my beloved Oreo Man was actually a genocidal racist madman that used his vast power to almost destroy the Enterprise? Oh, Oreo Man…

33. Nausicaans

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “tapestry” (1993).

One of the surlier races in the galaxy, Nausicaans are big hairy warriors that hire themselves out as mercenaries throughout the galaxy. A Nausicaan had quite the impact on the life of Jean-Luc Picard. When the future captain of the Enterprise was an ensign, he played a stirring game of domjot with some Nausicaan thugs (as one does). Picard and his pals accused the Nausicaans of cheating and the bad-tempered badasses stabbed Picard through the heart. This required Picard to get an artificial heart. (The more you know!)

The Nausicaans gave the crew of Deep Space Nine a hard time as well. This hairy race of pirates even encountered Captain Archer and the original crew of the Enterprise back in the day, proving that big hairy thugs that cheat at domjot remain big hairy thugs that cheat at domjot.

All that aside, Nausicaan fighting prowess is equal to the fighting prowess of Klingons and the only thing that keeps the Nausicaans from being more of a threat is their mistrust and their inability to come together as a species. Instead of being intergalactic conquerors, the Nausicaans have remained bullies, raider, and cheaters. But they do have killer 80s rocker hair, don’t they?

32. Kazon

First appearance: star trek: voyager “caretaker” (1995).

The Kazon were the first race that the crew of the Voyager encountered when they arrived in the Delta Quadrant, and — as far as d-bag, aggressive alien species go — the Kazon take the space cake (because when you put the word space in front of something, it sounds like you are in the future).

The Kazon race was separated into rival sects, which made negotiating with them as a whole almost impossible. They were once a slave race that served the Trabe, but the Kazon were a fractured species before and during its enslavement. Despite their disloyalty to each other, the Kazon were fierce combatants who were unwilling to negotiate a peace treaty with the Trabe or Voyager.

The Kazon had advanced technology and a back-stabbing blood thirst that introduced the crew of the Voyager to the Delta Quadrant and caused Voyager to be trapped in what was going to be a very hostile place, if the battle-hardened Kazon were any indication.

31. Metrons

First appearance: star trek: the original series “arena” (1967).

We do so love the Gorn. And what alien species was responsible for Kirk’s immortal battle with the Gorn? Why that would be the shiny and nigh omnipotent Metrons.

The Metrons possess tremendous mental powers and can control matter and energy. These human like aliens fiercely guard their sector of space and regard even the most minor intrusion as a great trespass punishable by death. When the Enterprise and a Gorn vessel find themselves in Metron space, the Metrons mentally teleport both Captains to a remote planet and force them to fight.

The Metrons are intensely xenophobic and regard other races as barbaric, so when Kirk spares the Gorn, the aloof Metrons are impressed and free both vessels. You see, a simple act of kindness was all it took to free the Enterprise from the Metrons’ wrath and impress a race of people that do not impress easily. Also, the Metrons wear sparkly evening gowns so they have that going for them…

30. Horta

First appearance: star trek: the original series “devil in the dark” (1967).

The Horta may look like a pile of bile soaked dog puke, but, hey, it was featured in William Shatner’s favorite Star Trek episode, so we have to give this blob of silicon its props.

The Horta was first encountered by a group of miners. After a miner was killed, Kirk and company were called to see what was up. They encounter the Horta, an extremely alien-looking beastie. After the creature is injured, Spock attempts a mind meld but the creature is in too much pain for Spock to connect with it. Soon, the crew of the Enterprise learns that the creature is the lone survivor of its race charged with protecting the eggs of the next generation of Horta. So Kirk and his pals dedicate themselves to protecting the thing’s little vomit eggs from the angry miners.

All jokes aside, the Horta was classic Trek alien: a semi-cheesy-looking beastie that stars in an episode with a powerful theme. The Horta was a prime example that all life has merit and even something that looks like a half-digested taco only wants to survive and thrive. By saving the Horta, the crew of the Enterprise shows that their most important mission is to contact and understand all life, no matter what it looks like. Thank you for that valuable lesson, Mr. Horta.

29. Greek Gods

First appearance: star trek: the original series “who mourns for adonis” (1967).

Wait, what? Oh, by the bristling beard of Zeus, the Greek Gods exists in the Star Trek  universe. 

The legendary deities of ancient Greece were actually super-powered aliens that lived on Pollox IV. They would visit Earth back in ancient times and bask in the worship of primitive humans. Well, the humans of the Enterprise were no primitives, and — when the Pollox IV alien that called itself Apollo trapped Kirk and his crew on the planet and refused to allow them to leave — Kirk and Spock fought back, kicking a god’s ass in the process.

Sadly, we never saw the other Greek gods. (Because could you just imagine Kirk versus Zeus?) But, it was established the other gods existed — and that they wore togas and laurel leaves like they were going to a frat party. The fact that this all exists in the same galaxy as Klingons and Borg just makes me very happy.

28. Hirogen

First appearance: star trek: voyager “message in a bottle” (1998).

The Hirogen are a nasty Delta Quadrant species of reptilian hunters that view any other sentient beings as prey. When the Hirogen chose a victim, the religious ritual of the Hunt began and all aspect of Hirogen culture centered on this blood sport. After the Hirogen tracked and captured its prey, they would remove the victim’s skeletal system, muscles, internal organs, ligaments, and tendons and keep these parts as trophies.

The Hirogen ran afoul of the Starship Voyager a number of times and Captain Janeway and her elite crew always found ways to defeat these hunters. In one of the Hirogen’s more bone headed moves, they created advanced holograms that could feel fear and pain. These thinking holograms quickly became more advanced than the Hirogen and turned the hunters into the hunted.

Despite this addlepated move, the Hirogen were always a feared species for those that traveled through the Delta Quadrant because they were essentially Predators dropped into the middle of the Star Trek universe.

27. El-Aurians

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “the child” (1988).

El-Aurian were a race of wise and peaceful people that transverse the galaxy to listen to the stories of others. When the Borg wiped out the El-Aurian’s home world, the galaxy lost a race of wise listeners… Or it almost did, because the surviving members of this race spread out across the galaxy.

Fans met the El-Aurians when The Next Generation introduced Guinan, the proprietor of Ten Forward, the bar of choice for the crew of the Enterprise. When Guinan came aboard, the members of the Enterprise had a kind and quick-witted being to bounce their problems off of, and Guinan listened. It was a shame that so many people like Guinan were lost to the Borg as the El-Aurians long lived goodness was a boon to the galaxy.

But not all El-Aurians were benevolent. Tollan Soran was an El-Aurian survivor that was aboard a ship of refugees with Guinan when the ships ferrying the El-Aurians refugees was lost to the fiery Nexus ribbon. It seemed that the legendary Captain Kirk was killed in this rescue attempt, but it turns out Kirk was trapped within the Nexus.

Soran became obsessed with returning to the Nexus and his Ahab like need for knowledge led to the first and only meeting between James T. Kirk and Jean Luc Picard. Soran was an anomaly to the El-Aurians species as most of the race used their centuries of wisdom to spread enlightenment wherever they went.

26. Tellarites

First appearance: star trek: the original series “journey to babel” (1967).

Along with Andorians and Vulcans, Tellarites were one of the first species to join the United Federation of Planets. A Tellarite first appeared in The Original Series episode “Journey to Babel,” where Sarek, Spock’s father, was framed for the murder of a Tellarite ambassador.

Sarek was able to solve the crime, freeing his name and forging a long-lasting peace with the Tellarities. Early contact with the Tellarites was recounted in Enterprise , but members of the specials also popped up in The Next Generation and even in a couple of films. Tellarites, with their distinctive beards, hooves, and stubbornness, have long been one of the backbone species of the Federation.

25. Tamarians

First appearance star trek: the next generation “darmok” (1991).

“Temba, his arms wide. Shaka, when the walks fell.” Who can forget these poetic, yet somewhat ominous phrases spoken by Dathon the Tamarian to Captain Picard when the two were trapped on a hostile world together?

Trek lore has it that the Federation and the Tamarians only had seven encounters over the years because the Tamarian language was so hard to comprehend. Well, if he was to survive, Picard would have to understand it (and fast) because Dathon beamed Picard down to the planet in order to teach the human captain a language that was as complex as it was beautiful.

It turns out Tamarians only communicate in metaphors (I’ve had grad school professors like that), and in order for the Federation and the Tamarians to build an accord, Picard would need to understand those metaphors. “Shaka when the walls fell,” has become quite a famous little moment of Trek myth as the Tamarians stand as a metaphor themselves — for cultural understanding and empathy.

24. Species 8472

First appearance: “star trek: voyager” part 1 (1997).

Species 8472 are so deadly that they even make the Borg poop their cybernetic underroos. (Hey, do you think when the Borg poops they all go at once? Or does one go make while the rest of the Collective just snickers? This is now the most ever written about Borg poop on the internet. Or is it? I’m not googling that.)

Anyway, Species 8472 existed in an extra-dimensional bit of hell known as fluidic space. When the Borg discovered the fluidic dimension, the ever deadly race of cybernetic killers busted through the dimensions and attempted to assimilate Species 8472. 8472 was having none of that and fought back, creating weapons that could slay the Borg with ease. In fact, 8472 was able to destroy the Borg Cubes in seconds. (Man, that’s like taking down the Death Star with a single bullet.) Sadly, Species 8472 also took out many innocent Delta Quadrant planets, which forced the crew of Voyager to get involved.

The Borg and Voyager had to form an unlikely alliance to drive Species 8472 back to fluidic space. 8472 was one of the closet things Trek fans ever got to Lovecraft-like cosmic horrors, as even the Borg could not stand up to these waling nightmares. This species appeared a few more times on Voyager until Captain Janeway was able to broker a peace with these terrors that exist behind the fabric of time and space.

23. The Gorn

Oh, the Gorn. Who doesn’t love Gorn? Of course, this rubbery looking and cold blooded reptilian monstrosity first appeared in the classic TOS episode “Arena,” where Kirk had to go mano-e-lizardo with the captain of a captured Gorn vessel. What followed was one of the most classic fights in Trek history as Kirk had to fashion a makeshift cannon to defeat this alien monster.

Despite its primitive appearance, future novels established the Gorn as a technologically-advanced race and, you just have to admit, Trek lore has not even scratched the surface of the Gorn. Imagine the spin offs. The Gorn Identity. Gorn to be Wild. Gorn on the Fourth of July. Fans were able to witness the Gorn home world for the first time in DC Comics’ Star Trek the Next Generation: The Gorn Crisis .

The Gorn were also one of the aliens made by Mego in its second set of Trek dolls. Fun fact: Mego’s Gorn looks nothing like the TV Gorn, as Mego just reused Marvel’s Lizard mold, painted it brown and decked old Gorny in the outfit used for the Klingon doll. Despite this lack of toy respect, and despite one of the cheapest prosthetic heads ever seen on TV, the Gorn’s battle with Kirk is still forever burned into Trek lore.

22. Tholians

First appearance: star trek: the original series “the tholian web” (1968).

Get a load of these psychedelic xenophobes. Yeah, the Tholians might look like a funky black light album cover come to life, but, really, they are brutal, territorial, hateful, and will do anything to keep other species out of Tholian territory. But, hey, they are known for the punctuality, so take heart in the fact that, when they kill you, it’ll be done in a timely fashion.

The Tholians cruise around their sector of space in geometric rainbow ships, making the aesthetic of the race more Yes album cover and less cool space despots. The Tholians first encountered the crew of the Enterprise when the USS Defiant flew too close to Tholian space.

Always protective of their borders, the Tholians phased the Defiant out of real space and into an interspace dimension. Kirk himself was phased out of time and space (for Shatner, it wouldn’t be the first or last time this happened), but Spock and the Enterprise were able to get their captain back and pimp-slap the Tholians.

The Enterprise under Jonathan Archer also ran afoul of these crystalline killers. The Tholians are a great example that in space, threats can come in any shape and even rainbows can kill you.

21. Talaxians

First appearance: star trek: voyager “caretaker” (1995).

One of the friendlier species of the Delta Quadrant, the Talaxians — or more accurately, an individual member of the Talaxian species — was pivotal to Voyager’s survival during the years it spent trapped in the Delta Quadrant.

Talaxians became dispersed throughout the Delta Quadrant after a devastating war with the Haakonian Order. Talaxians had no real home world, but that did not break their spirits. Talaxians are a very spiritual, upbeat, and whimsical race that — when confronted with two unpleasant paths to take in life — will find a third, happier path to traverse. This spiritual ability to find light and hope in any circumstance made the Talaxian Neelix indispensable to the crew of the Voyager.

Neelix was the cook and morale officer aboard Voyager and helped his friends out of many spiritual and literal crises. Throughout its wanderings in the Delta Quadrant, Voyager encountered many Talaxians that were always willing to lend a hand. Sadly, many aggressive species like the Borg also targeted the peaceful Talaxians — but, like Neelix, the Talaxians always found that third path.

20. Organians

First appearance: star trek: the original series “errand of mercy” (1967).

When Kirk, Spock, and the crew of the Enterprise first encounter the Organians, a non-distinct humanoid species, this new race appeared to be akin to an 18th century agrarian Earth society. Spock commented that his tricoder has more technology than the entirety of the Organians planet.

Sadly, the Organians home world became caught up in a war between the Federation and the Klingons. Kirk warned the Organians leaders that war was coming but the Organians were completely unconcerned… When the Klingons arrived and began to take Organians hostages, the Organians remained unconcerned — because, apparently, the Organians are millions of years more advanced than either Klingons or humans. The Organians mentally disabled the Klingon and Federation ships in orbit around their planet and calmly disarmed Kirk, Spock, and the Klingons.

The Organians have an advanced form of ESP and can predict future events. They also can possess the bodies of others. An Organian told Kirk that, one day, Klingons and humans would be friends — something ‘ol James T. couldn’t wrap his head around, but something Next Gen fans would know to be true. So here’s to the Organians, the Amish space gods of the galaxy.

19. The Traveler

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “where no one has gone before” (1987).

Now, let’s all be honest. Yeah, we love Wil Wheaton as he is truly nerd royalty and has done a great deal over the last few years as a sort of geek ambassador. But, real talk: no one really liked Wesley Crusher. We love Wesley’s mom, Dr. Beverly Crusher, but Wes was kind of the Jar Jar Binks of Star Trek . The Traveler freed us of all of that.

The Traveler is a member of a mysterious race of immensely powerful beings. The Traveler could transverse time, space, and heavenly bodies at will and could use his thoughts to manipulate nature and reality. The Traveler seemed to be second only to Q in terms of power and omnipotence.

When the Traveler first met ‘lil Wesley Crusher, he compared the lad to Mozart. This caused Captain Picard to promote Crusher to ensign. Later in his Starfleet career, Crusher began to have doubts about his lot in Starfleet. The Traveler convinced Crusher to leave Starfleet after Crusher began to develop powers similar to the Traveler.

As Crusher’s powers grew, the Traveler took him on as protégé, teaching the former ensign how to best use his vast powers to help the galaxy. Wesley left the Enterprise with the Traveler as his very own Yoda and, for this, Trek fans hold a great debt to the Traveler as he freed us from the oft times insipid Crusher.

You know, looking back, I wouldn’t mind a novel or two explaining what happened to Crusher later in life. So, I guess we can give the Traveler credit for not only freeing us from Wesley, but also for making Bev’s boy into an interesting part of the Star Trek universe.

18. Crystalline Entity

First appearance: star trek: the next generation: “datalore” (1988).

The Crystalline Entity is basically the Galactus of the Star Trek  universe. The Entity is a giant, electromagnetic engine of cosmic death that lives to consume organic matter. It goes from planet to planet, absorbing all organic matter and leaving dry husks of death behind. A Crystalline Entity destroyed the outpost where Commander Data was created, essentially making Data an intergalactic android orphan.

Despite its destructive power, the Crystalline Entity is a beautiful sight: huge and multi-faceted, colorful and shimmering — frankly, an artist’s dream. But, behind the beauty, lies a bite that can lay waste to entire species.

This giant snowflake of death was pivotal in the origins of Data and is one of the most feared species in the entire galaxy. There are other Crystalline Entities out there in the void of space, but, thankfully, encounters with them are very rare. As of yet, no Crystalline Entity has been seen hanging out with a silver guy on a surfboard… but we remain hopeful.

17. Betazoid

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “encounter at farpoint” (1987).

For seven seasons and a handful of films, Star Trek fans got to know a very special Betazoid: Counselor Deanna Troi. Troi was an exemplary member of the Betazoid race — a mostly peaceful people that possess empathic and telepathic powers.

Most Betazoids, including Troi, use their powers for the benefit of others. The Enterprise was saved many times thanks to Troi and her fantastic abilities as she served with honor and distinction about the Federation flagship. Betazoids are indistinguishable for humans except for their all black irises. It’s a very cool thought that there is a race of Charles Xaviers in the Star Trek  universe and, with more Star Trek coming our way soon, let us hope we have the honor to meet more Betazoids.

Fun fact: Gene Roddenberry wanted the Betazoid women to have four breasts. Can you imagine trying to take Troi seriously with four breasts? Thankfully, Roddenberry was talked out of this silliness and the Enterprise’s resident Betazoid counselor became the stuff of Trek legend.

16. Talosians

First appearance: star trek pilot “the cage” (1965).

You know we had to include the first aggressive alien species ever encountered in a Trek episode. And, yes, we’ll get this out of the way quickly: the Talosians’ heads look like asses. We know. ‘Ol fanny foreheads. Butt heads. Get it all out of your system. Okay, done? Good.

The Talosians were the sole survivors of a nuclear holocaust. The remaining Talosians manifested the power to create illusions. These beings grew addicted to the illusions and abandoned technology. Like the Lotus Eaters of old, their existence was now tied to their narcotic-like illusions. Soon, the Talosians grew bored. The buttheads lured alien races to their planet and fed off the psyche of their victims.

Captain Pike of the Enterprise and his science officer Spock were drawn to the Talosian home world. The Talosians tempted the Federation officers with everything they could desire, but — through the minds of both men — the Talosians learned that humans hated captivity. The Talosians showed compassion and let Pike and Spock go. Later, Spock would return to the Talosian planet after Pike was left paralyzed. The Talosians once again showed compassion as they allowed the broken Pike to live his life on the planet.

The Talosian story ends sweetly, but just remember that, somewhere in the galaxy, there are siren-like, androgynous aliens (the male Talosians were actually played by female actors), ready to lore victims into a life of captivity. The Talosians were Trek’s first encountered, named alien species and they are also some of the most memorable as these illusion-casting humanoids set the standard for all Trek species going forward. Not bad for a bunch of ass-heads.

15. Vorta

First appearance: star trek: deep space nine “the jem’hadar” (1994).

The Vorta were genetically bred by the Founders to be the perfect military commanders and strategists of the Dominion. Vorta are sly, cunning, and corrupt. Try to imagine an entire species of Littlefingers and you get the idea.

In addition to the strategic acumen baked into Vorta DNA by the Founders, Vorta are also programmed to believe that the Founders are gods — and the Vorta serve their gods in all things. The Vorta created the Jem’Hadar and could clone themselves so the Dominion would never be without its master strategists for long. Even after death.

But, like the Jem’Hadar, the Vorta were programmed to serve. Upon capture or defeat, a Vorta was programmed to commit suicide, and during the Dominion War, many Vorta pulled the trigger on their own demise. The Vorta was one of the most cunning and immoral races Starfleet ever faced, even if the immorality was inserted into their genetic makeup by another species.

14. Xindi

First appearance: star trek: enterprise “the expanse” (2003).

The Xindi are a collective of six subspecies — avian, arboreal, primate, reptilian, insect, and aquatic — that form a single race. As a whole, the Xindi posed a great threat to the early Federation.

The Xindi worship a race known as the Sphere Builders and, when this mysterious race warns the Xindi that they will be involved in a war with Earth, the Xindi preemptively strike, killing millions of humans. Jonathan Archer and his crew take the fight to the Xindi who provide the first crew of the Enterprise its greatest challenge.

The Xindi was one of the first warnings to humanity that not every race is benevolent as the six races of this advanced culture reined death upon an Earth that was still getting used to the idea of contact with alien life.

13. Trill

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “the host” (1991).

Trills are an advanced species of humanoid that are passionate and kind in most of their dealings. Some Trills are joined with wise Symbiotes that chose different member of the Trill species with which to share a mutual bond. The Symbiotes retain the personalities and memories of each host and pass these aspects on to the new hosts.

The first Trill Trek fans encountered was named Odan. Odan quickly struck up a romance with Dr. Beverly Crusher and, when Odan was tragically killed, the Symbiote was moved into the body of William Riker. Riker had long been friend-zoned by Crusher, so this began one of the most awkward romances in Trek history.

It also gave fans the legacy of the Trill, a legacy that continued into Deep Space Nine with the beloved Jadzia Dax. Through Dax, fans learned about almost every aspect of Trill life. It was a fascinating meditation of duality, sexuality, and identity and the character of Jadzia Dax was almost a dozen disparate characters in one. When Jadzia was lost, the Symbiote moved into Ezri Dax, a wonderful new character that continued the exploration into what it is like being many beings at once.

12. Tribbles

First appearance: star trek: the original series “the trouble with tribbles” (1967).

They’re fuzzy, they squeak, they can be deadly — who doesn’t love Tribbles? Ask any casual fan to name a Trek alien, and there’s a good chance Mr. Joe on the street guy will say Tribbles because these bundles of fur are just that darn famous.

“Trouble with Tribbles” — The Original Series  installment that first introduced these puff balls — allowed Shatner, Nimoy, and company to really flex their comedy chops. But, when you break down the threat the Tribbles represented, they actually are pretty terrifying… Imagine a species that reproduces so fast, a ship can be suffocating on the things in a matter of days. That’s a bit more Giger than Pokemon.

Despite the threat, the Tribbles also brought the laughs to generations of fans. Of course, the Tribbles were revisited in the classic DS9 episode “Trials and Tribble-ations” and also played a major role in the recent film Star Trek: Into Darkness . To quote a great man from a rival space franchise: “Not bad for a little fuzzball.”

11. Jem’Hadar

One of the greatest and most efficiently deadly militaries the galaxy have ever seen, the foot soldiers of the Dominion — the Jem’Hadar — are also one of the more tragic species that can be found in the Trekverse.

Jem’Hadar reach maturity in the span of about three days. They are genetically programmed to be the perfect galactic foot soldier by their masters, the Vorta. To insure control, the Vorta have withheld an essential enzyme from the Jem’Hadar genetic makeup. This enzyme is supplied to the Jem’Hadar in the form of The White, a liquid that the Jem’Hadar has filtered into their systems through a tube in their necks. Essentially, Jem’Hadar are drug-addicted soldiers unleashed upon the galaxy.

The Jem’Hadar were the main Dominion force that laid siege to Deep Space Nine during the Dominion War and were nearly unstoppable. The need for The White was a religion to the Jem’Hadar, who became one of the most feared species in any quadrant.

Jem’Hadar are incredibly resilient and possess keen minds that help them plan for battles. Despite all this, most Jem’Hadar die very young due to the fact that they are essentially cannon fodder for the Dominion. Yet, the Jem’Hadar value duty and loyalty above all else as they embrace their lot as pawns of the Dominion. All for The White.

10. Changeling

First appearance: star trek: deep space nine “the emissary” (1993).

As we all know, life in the Trek universe can take many and varied forms. One of the most profoundly different races of the Trek galaxy are the Changelings, a race of intelligent liquid-based shape shifters that reshaped the political climate of the galaxy with the same ease that they reshape their bodies.

The Changelings were also known as The Founders and were the puppet masters behind the Dominion War. From their wormhole homeworld, the Changelings manipulated the universe. The Founders used entire races like chess pieces showing the Federation and its enemies that there are beings that exist within and behind the galaxy that are willing to go any lengths for power.

But not all Changelings were adversarial. Through Odo, Trek fans saw another side to this fascinating species. Odo was the constable aboard DS9 , a by-the-books cop who went to any lengths (literally) to solve crimes. He was a defender of his Federation friends, particularly Kira Nerys the woman he learned to love. When the Founders merged their liquid forms with Odo, they learned about humanity, and his love and bravery spread even to the hidden spaces of the galaxy.

Plus, The Changelings are an alien species that can easily disguise themselves as furniture. You can’t teach that!

9. Andorians

First appearance: star trek: the original series “journey to babel” (1968).

The Andorians are an aggressive yet advanced race that was one of the first alien races that formed the original Federation of Planets with humanity.

The Andorians have distinctive blue skin, white hair, and two protruding antennae. The blue skinned humanoids have an advanced armada and a long history of conflict with the Vulcans. This conflict was put aside as Andorians entered into the Federation and, with it, decades of peace. But peace wasn’t easy, as seen in Star Trek: Enterprise,  in which Federation Captain Archer and Andorian Captain Thy’lek Shran developed an adversarial relationship that, thankfully, culminated in a friendship based on mutual respect.

The Andorians are more than a bit xenophobic as they refer to humans and Vulcans as “pink skins” and have a long standing mistrust of everything not Andorian. In fact, the Andorians don’t even trust their offshoot race, the very rarely encountered, white-skinned, psychic Aenar.

Enterprise is a bit unfairly-maligned by some Trekkers, but it will always be the show that took the Andorians from background characters to a narratively-explored race with deep contradictions. Of course, I need to mention that the Andorian was also one of the final Trek dolls Mego produced. It is very sparkly.

8. Ferengi

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “the last outpost” (1987).

I would  tell you some facts about the Ferengi, but I’d have to charge you about ten bars of (snarl, drool) gold-pressed latinum first. Because that’s what drives the Ferengi race: cold, hard, glimmering, wonderful cash-money.

By the time fans met the crew of the Kirk’s Enterprise, most races in the galaxy had abandoned cash-based economies to focus on the improvement of science and technology for all beings. But not the Ferengi. These big-eared, fanged critters utilize science and technology to procure cash and heaven help any sentients that stand in their way.

Fans first me the Ferengi in Next Gen as the greedy race of miscreants became the first real adversaries Picard’s crew had to face. The Ferengi in Next Gen were vile and greedy, sort of like spacefaring Daffy Ducks. But, in Deep Space Nine , fans were introduced to Quark, Rom, Nog, and other Ferengi that had a streak of nobility. Oh, they were still as greedy as they come, but this Ferengi family, saved the DS9 space station more than once. Heck, Nog even became the first Ferengi to serve in Starfleet.

In DS9 , fans learned many of the finer points of Ferengi culture. For example, Ferengi women aren’t allowed to wear clothes. In addition to their odd dress codes, the Ferengi live by the Rules of Acquisition, an almost religious text that teaches the Ferengi the best ways to make money. Quark constantly had to choose between loyalty to his friends and his Ferengi impulses for cash and this often humorous double nature led to some fun dramas.

But, if you have a piece of latinum in your pocket, be warned that there are many Ferengi out there who would kill for it because that is the Ferengi way.

7. Romulans

First appearance: star trek: the original series “balance of terror” (1966).

All sentient races in the galaxy have a good, healthy fear of the Romulans — and with good reason. In many ways, the Romulans are like the anti-Vulcans. In fact, Romulans are an offshoot of the Vulcan race. Centuries ago, the Romulans rejected the Vulcan idea of repression of emotions and struck out on their own, finally settling on the twin planets Romulus and Remus and forging an empire.

Where Vulcans are cold, collected, and benevolent, Romulans are fiery, aggressive, and often power hungry. This passionate need to conquer led to the Earth/Romulan war, the first time humanity experienced total war on an intergalactic scale. Earth was eventually victorious and, during the conflict, no human ever actually saw a Romulan. Years later, it was the crew of the Enterprise that actually saw what Romulans looked like and it was Mr. Spock that postulated a common ancestry between Vulcans and Romulans.

The Romulans were based on the aggressiveness and culture of the Roman Empire, which is seen through the race’s military aggression and clothing. Despite years of ill will, the Romulans sided with the Federation in the Dominion War. A Romulan also changed reality, as fans of the new Trek films know…

A Romulan named Nero used a Red Matter device to destroy Romulus and punch a hole in time and space. Nero then went back in time and destroyed the USS Kelvin, causing a new reality to splinter off from the original Trek timeline — a reality Trek fans are currently enjoying in films.

Romulans have touched every part of Trek history and have even created a huge amount of it. They continue to serve as a counterpoint to the Vulcans and their name brings fear and respect throughout the Trek galaxy.

If you can imagine God in the Star Trek   universe, you understand Q. Q isn’t a kind god or an emotionally-distant god, hungry for worship. Q is a curious god that wants to test the intelligent races of the galaxy — particularly Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the Enterprise.

Q is a member of The Q, a race of omnipotent beings that observe the universe from afar and interfere in the lives of mortals when it suits their whims. The Q are a force of nature, appearing when and where they want to bring gifts or utter destruction to lesser beings. It all depends on a Q’s whims. Q became a sometimes-ally, sometimes-antagonist to the crew of the Enterprise and even popped up on DS9 and Voyager . (And, really, how awesome would it be to see Q pop into J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin Universe?)

Q is everywhere and everything. Wherever Q went, great storytelling followed — mostly because of the deeply complex and often comedic relationship between Q and Picard. Whether it was TV, comics, or novels (most notably the eminently readable Q Continuum trilogy by Greg Cox), The Q’s force of nature omnipotence have made them one of the most feared and gloriously divine species in the Trek universe. Yes, in Trek, Q definitely stood for quality.

5. Bajorans

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “ensign ro” (1991).

It is apropos that the Bajorans and Cardassians are so close on this list because the two races are forever linked in the mind of Trek fans. Trekkers first met the Bajoran through Enterprise Ensign Ro Laren, a fiery and ultra-capable young Starfleet cadet.

Ro had everything it took to get ahead in Starfleet. She was loyal, dedicated, brilliant, and strong willed. Yet, the past of her people, the Bajorans, was filled with so much tragedy. The loyalty to her race led Ro away from Starfleet and into the waiting arms of the Marquis, a group that abandoned Starfleet to form a renegade fleet of rebels dissatisfied with Federation doctrine.

Ro’s discontent was expanded upon by the inclusion of the Bajorans in Deep Space Nine . In DS9 , fans learnt of the suffering that the Bajorans were forced to endure at the hands of the Cardassians. Bajorans were a race of freedom fighters, a highly scientific and artistic race that had to embrace militarism and xenophobia in order to survive.

In DS9 , fans learned almost every aspect of the Bajoran race. What began with Ro continued the Kira Nerys, the second in command of the Deep Space Nine space station and a woman who would do anything to keep her people free and punish her former oppressors.

DS9 introduced many Bajoran notables in its many seasons, and not all of them were benevolent. Of all the races introduced in Star Trek , the Bajorans might be the most tragically human as they had to see their own darkness in order to survive the unthinkable in order to survive the Cardassians.

4. Cardassians

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “the wounded” (1991).

Nowhere in the Trek universe have there been a race more troubling, more complex, and more narratively-interesting race than the Cardassians. Fans first met the lizard like, leathery Cardassians in the Next Gen episode entitled “The Wounded,” in which the martial struggle between the Cardassians and the Bajoran was introduced.

The Cardassians were first seen as Nazi-like war criminals that committed a horrible genocide against the Bajoran people. The anger against the Cardassians, amongst other points of discontent, caused a large segment of Bjorn sympathizers to break off from the Federation and form the Marquis.

Cardassians warred with both the Federation and the Klingon Empire and took both fleets to the absolute limits. When the Cardassian/Bjorn conflict ended with the Bajoran victorious, it was up to the Federation to help the galaxy heal. The Federation set up the Deep Space Nine space station to oversee this transition of power as Cardassians began to be tried for war crimes that were simply unthinkable in such an enlightened galaxy. 

At this time, fans met Gul Dukat and Garak. Garak in particular demonstrated that there was more to the Cardassians than violence. He became a DS9 wildcard who, for the most part, was loyal to peace and harmony.

However, both Garak and former Cardassian military leader Gul Dukat had spilled their fair share of blood and the Cardassians began to stand-in for any race that committed genocide. Parallels were drawn not only to the Nazis but to Imperialistic Europe and to America’s treatment of indigenous peoples as well.

The Cardassians were a difficult mirror to look into because they exposed many societal flaws of the contemporary world. Through rich, powerfully crafted characters like Garak, Trek reminds viewers that in all species, there is the capacity for tremendous good and unthinkable evil.

3. Borg

First appearance: star trek: the next generation “q who” (1989).

Throughout Trek history, the wonderful men and women who have crafted stories for Star Trek have often reminded fans that space can be a cruel and terrible place — but no race has represented the horrors of the Final Frontier more than the Borg.

The Borg is a race of cyborg drones that share a hive mind. Their only aim is to assimilate the universe and make all Borg. Borg are mindless automatons that answer to the Borg Queen and the Collective. They are unstoppable and fiercely efficient. The Borg roam the galaxy in their distinctive Borg Cubes and, when they encounter any organic race, that race is forcibly assimilated into the Borg. All hopes, history, art, passion, and individuality become part of the Collective while the individual becomes a living weapon, a husk dedicated only to the Borg. Famously, Jean-Luc Picard fell to the Borg and was transformed into Locutus. As Locutus, Picard came an eyelash away from assimilating the Enterprise.

Later, through characters like Hugh Borg and Seven of Nine, some humanity was given to the Borg. Hugh was an injured Borg healed by Picard’s crew, while Seven of Nine broke her programming and served on Voyager. Through both characters, more and more history was revealed about the Borg. Fans even got to meet the Borg Queen in the film Star Trek: First Contact  — and what an H.R. Giger nightmare that was.

Throughout the decades, Star Trek has been the most hopeful of sci-fi franchises. Trek is infused with humankind’s potential for greatness and a hope for an enlightened future. The Borg serve as a reminder that technology can lead to paradise, yes, but it can also lead to a cold future of pure horror where individuality is worthless and resistance is futile.

2. Klingons

When we first met the Klingons, they were classically humanoid aliens that mirrored the worst of humanity. In the earliest Klingon appearances, Klingon society was portrayed as brutal and despotic. They were slave masters that would do anything to crush any opposition.

The Klingons were constant threats. At times, the Klingons seemed to be analogous to the Nazi Third Reich. In other instances, they resembled Communist Russia. But whatever real world nightmare the Klingons represented at any given moment, whenever a Klingon Bird of Prey warped into a confrontation with the Enterprise, fans know that intense action would follow.

When the Klingons returned in Star Trek: The Motion Picture , this brutal race’s appearance was altered. Suddenly, Klingons were shown to have deep forehead ridges and a more bestial appearance. The real reason this was done was because Trek now had a budget, but there has never been an in story reason for the Klingon alteration. This just adds to the mystique of the Klingon race.

Klingons take the next step of their story evolution in Star Trek: The Next Generation . Now, a Klingon served on the bridge of the Enterprise, and it could be argued that this Klingon — Mr. Worf — was the very model of what a Starfleet officer should be. Through Worf, Next Gen explored every aspect of Klingon culture and made it more like a race of honorable technologically-advanced Vikings or Mongols than an analogy to fascism. That exploration continued into Deep Space Nine and, through the half Klingon-half human engineer B’Elanna Torres, onto Voyager .

There is an actual a Klingon language that exists in the real world. A whole freakin’ language has been created inspired by these honorable and violent warriors of the cosmos. So, raise a glass of Klingon Warnog, grab your Bat’leth, and salute the Klingons — a race that started out as typical villains, but evolved into one of the most engaging and inspiring races in the galaxy.

Is there any race in genre fiction more beloved than the Vulcans? This race of logic-driven, emotionless, pointy-eared people have defined the Star Trek experience since day one.

In the Star Trek pilot, “The Cage,” the world was introduced to science officer Spock, a cold, calculating yet brave and benevolent alien who loyally assisted his captain. Fifty years later, Spock is still the strong right hand of the Enterprise. The Vulcan’s lack of emotion serves as a perfect narrative contrast to human nature, with the interactions and differences between Spock, McCoy, and Kirk as the beating heart of Trek since Roddenberry first put pen to paper.

But the wonder of the Vulcans don’t end with Spock. Over the decades — through countless books, films, TV episodes, and comics — many Vulcans have taken center stage and have, in the words of the most famous Vulcan of them all, fascinated fans for generations…

There has been Sarek, Spock’s father who dared to follow his emotions and take a human wife. There has been Tuvok, the brave and able Vulcan officer who served on Voyager. There has been T’Pol, the sometimes cold but always loyal commander that served as the first officer of the first Enterprise. By being so alien, all these characters and so many more have shown the world what it means to be human.

Trek lore has delved deeply into Vulcan history, creating one of most fully-functioning and detailed fictional worlds in all of sci-fi. Sadly, in the latest set of Trek films, Vulcan has fallen and this magnificent race is endangered. But take heart that Spock, Vulcan and Earth’s favorite son, is endeavoring to rebuild the race that has long made Star Trek so awesome.

Star Trek Just Doubled Down on Its Wildest Body-Switching Concept

Welcome back to Trill.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3.

Body switching is a classic sci-fi trope. From Freaky Friday to Farscape , and of course, most of Quantum Leap, the idea of the consciousness from one person inhabiting the body of a different person will never stop being the fuel for speculative stories that are both hilarious and profound. But, when Star Trek invented the “joined” species of the Trill in 1991, it took the body-switching/body-surfing trope to a new level. While a specific Trill symbiont might live for several hundreds of years, this slug-like creature generally inhabited a humanoid host. This “joining” often created a new hybrid personality each time, sort of like Time Lord regeneration from Doctor Who mashed up with internal alien parasites from Alien; a chest-burster that never burst, but just stayed in you forever.

And if all of that wasn’t wild enough, on June 12, in the episode “Facets,” 1995, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine added a new wrinkle to Trill canon. Not only were the memories of all the previous hosts alive and well in the current symbiont, but, through a process called “zhian’tara,” a specific host’s personality could leave the symbiont and enter into the body of... anyone! Basically, this was Trill joining via spacey magic, and now, 29 years after “Facets,” Star Trek: Discovery is doubling down (tripling down?) on this very specific form of consciousness transfer in the Season 5 episode “Jinaal.” Spoilers ahead.

Although the Trill were established in The Next Generation episode “The Host,” the vast majority of Trill canon comes from Deep Space Nine , thanks to the presence of Jadzia Dax, who later, in Season 7, switched hosts and became Ezri Dax. But, in the memorable Season 3 episode “Facets,” Jadzia’s previous host, Curzon, left her body through the zhian’tara process and settled in the body of the station’s resident shapeshifter, Odo. From that point, Odo’s entire personality was merged with Curzon’s, which put everyone on the station in a deeply uncomfortable position.

As a stand-alone episode of DS9 , “Facets” remains a fantastic story about memory, regret, and what one generation owes the next. But, the legacy of “Facets” is easily the concept of zhian’tara, which was used to save Gray Tal’s consciousness in Discovery Season 4, and now, in Season 5, is being employed again to unravel an 800-year-old mystery.

The planet Trill was first seen in DS9 in the episode “Equilibrium,” but Discovery has actually visited the planet more times, starting in the Season 3 episode “Forget Me Not,” and now again, in “Jinaal.” This time the need to transfer the memories of one previous Trill host into someone else is all connected to the secrets Jinaal Bix has about researcher of the Progenitors in the 24th century.

After transferring Jinaal’s consciousness into Culber, the entire personality of our stalwart Starfleet doctor changes, and, just like “Facets,” he suddenly becomes cockier, and more evasive. If you watch “Facets” right after watching “Jinaal,” the parallels are clear. While Curzon’s secret was connected to something personal, Jinaal’s secret has broader implications. Turns out, Federation scientists were working on cracking the Progenitor tech during the era of the Dominion War, and so they decided to bury any knowledge of the technology to prevent any planet or government from weaponizing their research.

Interestingly, this detail dovetails with Picard Season 3 a bit, in which we learned that Section 31 was pushing different Federation scientists to weaponize the organic nature of Changelings. Basically, the Dominion War created a lot of corrupt scientific research within the Federation, making the top-secret Daystrom labs that Riker, Raffi, and Worf raided perhaps just a small sample of the horrible top-secret weapons the Federation has developed.

What Discovery does is make it clear that Jinaal did the right thing at the time by hiding the research — even if that doesn’t help our heroes at the moment.

A classic Original Series nod

Of course, within the canon of Trek, the Trill weren’t the first time the franchise explored the concept of sharing consciousness. Spock transferred his katra to Bones in The Wrath of Khan , and Kirk switched bodies with Janice Lester in the controversial final TOS episode “Turnabout Intruder.”

But, one wonderful 1968 episode from TOS Season 2 — “Return to Tomorrow” — featured ancient beings borrowing the bodies of Kirk, Spock, and Dr. Ann Mulhall in order to build more permanent, android bodies. When the ancient being of Sargon enters Kirk’s body, one of the first things he says is: “Your captain has an excellent body.”

Now, 56 years later, when Jinaal finds himself in Culber’s body, he says something similar: “Wow, this guy really works out!”

Across decades of internal canon, Star Trek can make the same body-switching joke, and make it work, in any century.

Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek franchise is full of iconic heroes, aliens, and starships. Set centuries in the future, it imagines a galaxy where the human race has abandoned its worst tendencies in favor of exploring the wonders of the galaxy . This format has proven remarkably successful, as Star Trek: The Original Series overcame initially poor odds to spawn over half a dozen spin-off series, as well as several movies and hundreds of books, comics, and video games.

Yet like every long-running franchise, the universe of Star Trek is full of contradictions, forgetful writers, and behind-the-scenes errors. From Spock's rapidly growing family tree to numerous issues involving the Klingons, it's safe to say that the final frontier is far from set in stone.

The Members of the Federation

How far-reaching is the utopian alliance.

Despite representing the undisputed system of government for Earth and countless other worlds, very little concrete information is divulged about the Federation and its members throughout the Star Trek franchise. The size of the alliance fluctuates wildly depending on the source consulted: while The Original Series implies that there are just over 30 worlds in the Federation, information related to the more-or-less concurrent Kelvin timeline suggests a group at least four times larger. While this discrepancy can be attributed to divergent timelines, one point of contention remains: the status of the Klingon Empire.

While it's undeniable that the Federation and the Klingon Empire were allies during The Next Generation , various set dressing details and throwaway lines hint at a deep relationship. A Klingon starship carries the Federation flag on its bridge in "Heart of Glory", perhaps implying membership, while a later conversation between Picard and Wesley Crusher is even more explicit. In "Samaritan Snare", Wesley refers to a time "before the Klingons joined the Federation". However, many fans discount this line, suggesting that it refers to the Treaty of Alliance rather than formal membership.

The Eugenics Wars

What actually happened (and when).

The infamous Eugenics Wars (first referenced in The Original Series episode "Space Seed") was a devastating conflict that killed millions and resulted in humanity abandoning its research into genetic augmentation. According to a conversation between Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy, the conflict took place between 1992 and 1996—the distant future for viewers of the episode's original broadcast. However, given that the mid-nineties came and went without any global conflict, Star Trek 's writers have subsequently scrambled to reconcile sixties' world-building with contemporary knowledge.

Star Trek Fans Debate Who Deserves Credit For Defeating Khan

In an attempt to make sense of the timeline, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds suggested that temporal interference from various factions pushed the Eugenics War (and the actions of the genocidal Khan ) forward into the mid-twenty-first century. Whether future franchise showrunners will be forced to kick the can further down the road remains to be seen, but it certainly wouldn't be the first retcon to this vital part of Star Trek lore.

Can They Use Transporters?

The Trill are one of Star Trek 's more bizarre aliens, as some of the humanoid species are physically connected to a centuries-old symbiont. When the host dies, their memories live on within the symbiont, which is subsequently transferred into another individual. The Trill's unique physiology was central to their introductory episode "The Host", which saw Beverly Crusher fall in love with one of the aliens only for its host to tragically die.

The decision to foreground the Trill in the subsequent Star Trek: Deep Space Nine meant that the aliens underwent a radical overhaul. In The Next Generation , joined Trill were unable to use transporters because doing so would endanger their symbiont, while DS9 's Dax frequently made use of the technology. Also notable was the change in the Trill's appearance: the show's writers were apparently scandalized that the beautiful Terry Farrell would be given the Trill's original ugly makeup, and suggested using the spots previously seen on the Kriosians in The Next Generation .

Starfleet's Identity

Just who is captain kirk answerable to.

The Federation Starfleet is now so much of a part of nerd culture that the organization's chevron symbol is recognizable even outside its original context. However, both the famous insignia and the identity of Starfleet itself were once very far from concrete, as evidenced by early episodes of The Original Series . In "Charlie X", Captain Kirk makes a report to "UESPA headquarters", rather than Starfleet Command. Then, in "Tomorrow is Yesterday", the acronym is defined as referring to the United Earth Space Probe Agency, and Kirk suggests that this organization is responsible for the Enterprise 's mission.

Star Trek: Best Starships To Work On

The United Earth Space Probe Agency doesn't roll off the tongue in quite the same way as "Starfleet", so the decision to alter the name of Kirk's employers into something punchier makes a lot of sense. Interestingly, future shows did play lip service to the UESPA concept: an unmanned probe launched by the group is discovered by the USS Voyager in "Friendship One", while Star Trek: Enterprise implies that UESPA is part of Starfleet rather than a separate organization.

Spock's Family Tree

How many long-lost siblings can one vulcan have.

The Vulcan Spock may have an impeccable sense of logic, but he also appears to have a terrible memory when it comes to his own family. While this vagueness can be traced back to The Original Series (his claim that a human woman married one of his ancestors is a strange way to refer to his own mother and father), Spock is particularly susceptible to suddenly recalling previously unmentioned siblings. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) introduced audiences to estranged half-brother Sybok , while Star Trek: Discovery saddled Spock with an adopted human sister in the form of Michael Burnham.

Why the Discovery writing room decided to draw inspiration from what is widely regarded as the worst Star Trek film remains unclear—it may be that Spock is perceived to be such a cultural heavyweight that linking new characters to the original Vulcan is seen as a way to ensure their popularity. Whether this is actually accurate is up for debate, but with countless other Star Trek projects currently in development, Spock may find his family tree yielding further undisclosed branches.

The Klingons

They do not discuss their retcons with outsiders.

The Klingons are probably Star Trek 's most iconic alien race, but when it comes to internal consistency, the classic species is sorely lacking. The Original Series cast the Klingons as scheming space Soviets; The Next Generation reinvented them as honor-bound warriors . Nor do the Klingons maintain a constant appearance: they didn't grow their craggy foreheads until Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), while the recent Star Trek: Discovery chose to depict the Klingons as bald space orcs. While most of these changes can be attributed to behind-the-scenes budget increases, the in-universe logic is far murkier.

Star Trek: Worf's Best Quotes

Star Trek: Enterprise made a valiant effort to explain the change in Klingon appearance and behavior, only to be completely ignored by the subsequent Star Trek: Discovery . Deep Space Nine 's "Trials and Tribble-ations" perhaps puts it best—when asked why he doesn't resemble the Klingons of Kirk's era, Worf shuts down the conversation by saying that it is not a topic that they discuss with outsiders.

SETI chief says US has no evidence for alien technology. 'And we never have'

If all the reports of mysterious objects buzzing our skies are taken as true encounters, the Earth appears to be under assault. 

But spoiler alert: For the chief leader of the SETI Institute, established to search for and understand life beyond Earth, there's a need to step back and cuddle up to a cup of cosmic reality. 

"We don't have any evidence of any credible source that would indicate the presence of alien technology in our skies. And we never have," said Bill Diamond, president and chief executive officer of the SETI Institute, headquartered in Mountain View, California. "The idea that the government is keeping something like this secret is just totally absurd. There's no motivation to do so."

SETI is a key research contractor to NASA and the National Science Foundation, and collaborates with industry partners throughout Silicon Valley. Space.com caught up with Diamond for a close-encounter with his own thoughts and counterpoints to claims of alien visitation and to ask whether there's any signal in all the UFO noise.

Thought experiment 

Diamond said that, while we should not outright rule out the possibility that we might someday discover evidence of alien technology in our skies, "we should equally not jump to the conclusion that UFOs are alien technology in the absence of any compelling evidence to that effect. And there is no compelling evidence," he contends.

The fastest spacecraft that humans have ever built and continues to head outward from Earth is NASA's New Horizons spacecraft. It was hurled outward back in January 2006, cruising by Pluto and is still adding mileage to its odometer.

"If you sent that spacecraft to our closest neighbor star, Alpha Centauri , it would take 80,000 years to get there," said Diamond. "Any civilization that has mastered the ability to traverse the incomprehensibly vast distances of interstellar space would have technology so far advanced from our own as to be beyond our comprehension."

It would be much like a smartphone to a Neanderthal, Diamond suggested. 

"If such beings exist, they would likely send hardware here first and not biology, and they certainly wouldn't crash-land in our deserts," he said, like the alleged and highly acclaimed 1947 nose-dive of a UFO and its accident-prone occupants near Roswell, New Mexico.

In short haul language, that's a long way to travel and run out of braking fluid.

Where's the mothership? 

"Long before they sent any craft into our sky they would have some understanding of what they were dealing with," Diamond observed, "as they would already know everything about our atmosphere, our airspace, our technology and more." 

It just wouldn't happen, Diamond emphasized.

"And if it did they wouldn't leave them behind. And by the way, if you have a small craft zipping around in our airspace, where is the mothership? And if they didn't want to be observed, they wouldn't be!"

Connective tissue 

All the same, in the public mind, is there some kind of connective tissue between SETI and UFOs?

"There is definitely connective tissue," Diamond responded. "Why do people have these beliefs? It is because they want to believe. Nobody really wants to think that this Earth is the only place in the vastness of space where life has emerged. Even that idea is also kind of absurd."

For example, Diamond points to the revelations cranked out by the NASA Kepler mission, lofted in March 2009. 

That hunter/data-gatherer spacecraft discovered more than 2,700 planets beyond our solar system . Compiling deep space data for nine years, the message from Kepler: there are billions of unseen planets, indeed, more planets than stars .

Statistical probability 

"Statistically speaking, every single star in the sky has one or more planets around it," Diamond pointed out. Furthermore, 50 percent or more of these are Earth-like (rocky surface and similar size) and in the habitable zone of their host star, he said.

"That implies the existence of tens of billions of potentially habitable worlds in our galaxy alone," Diamond said. "So indeed, the statistical probability that we are alone in the Universe is zero. Surely there is life beyond Earth!"  

But the presence, both in space and time , as well as proximity, of advanced alien civilizations is another matter completely, Diamond continued. "There are innumerable variables, all of which in the sciences of astrobiology , planetary science, astronomy and astrophysics , we are trying to figure out."

Accidental observations 

The SETI Institute's Allen Telescope Array in Hat Creek, California is now searching 20,000 red dwarf stars for signs of intelligent life.

Diamond questions why any alien civilization would send biology when they could isntead send hardware. 

"The farthest things we have sent into space are hardware. And that's logical," said Diamond. "But if you did send beings and the most interesting thing you can do is draw circles in crops … come on!"

One other scoop of skepticism Diamond added is that every single UFO — now tied to the term Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) — are all "accidental observations."

"Therefore, they are highly unreliable. They don't have instrumentation, technology, or methodology to discern what they are looking at," said Diamond.

Lastly, the SETI Institute leader said if the government actually believed in ET buzzing our planet, where's the study money? 

"The lack of government funding to study UAP/UFO is evidence of either the government being quite certain that there's nothing to these accidental observations — or — the government preferring that we not use available technology to closely watch our skies because of our own human technologies that are being developed — in secret," said Diamond.

"I think that's the most compelling bit of evidence against the idea that we've got visitors in our skies," Diamond concluded.

With all the high-definition cameras covering the globe, why do none of them ever capture a clear image of these UAPs/UFOs? Seeing is believing, but belief is subject to interpretation, misconception, and rationalization that may simply not be true.

It reported that the tic tac video image screens were set at the wrong range. It's lowest range, something like 50 meters. Two planes in formation were set that way, the others in that patrol were not. Only those two planes recorded that, the others were clear and looking for what the other thought they were seeing. Extremely embarrassing for a navel aviator. And no other explanations were offered. Haven't heard anything about the orbs. However my experience with DSP, multiple sensors, and RF networking of them.....have shown to produce multiple processing artifacts. Most are filtered and cancelled out. But with this type of threat, and the software used, an un-expected artifact could be considered a target and plotted. Better to plot a fake, than to not plot a target. Allowing human pilot or operator to verify. If there was ANY evidence of UFOs, we would have seen it. There is none. And our present science says there can not be. Only star trek and star wars science can do these things. Observation is the easiest and the oldest method of deception. A predatory method. Reply
  • Dave A thousand years ago Europeans did not come to the Americas. It was impossible at the time. The earth was flat. How did that all turn out? Countless UAP spacecraft have been seen that defy the laws of physics. These are true observations and as much as we would like to believe we are the center of the universe, we are not. Intelligent lifeforms observing us do not wish contact. They do not wish to be discovered. Their science is a better science. The people who collect the data on this subject are the military. For decades they have lied covered up and misled not only the public, but congress as well. Finally there is some push back by bipartisan members of congress. They will get to the bottom of it and reveal the truth. It will take time. Even at this very moment they have to fight tooth and nail to get any answers. The evidence is compelling and supported by multiple sensors -- both air and ship-borne. Ignoring these data points highly suggests the desire not to find anything.

Saturday Night Live wasted no time getting to the good stuff this week: another alien abduction sketch, with host Ryan Gosling joined by (and trying hard not to laugh at) former cast member Kate McKinnon .

For Todd and Sherman’s character, the alien encounter was transcendent bliss, but Miss Rafferty had a tougher road. She “was by the lake taking a whore bath” when she got “sucked up by a giant vacuum cleaner hose” and came face to face with the gray aliens again. While Todd tried to recreate the aliens’ beautiful humming language, Miss Rafferty complained that the aliens were “batting at my knockers” and “staring down the barrel of my south mouth.” But “their heart wasn’t in it,” she admitted.

Todd remembered that the aliens were impressed by him because “they’re smooth down there… no dong,” while he’s “packing a troll nose” down there. (And if you haven’t heard the term “troll nose” before, “you must be hanging out at a different bowling alley than we are.”) He stood up, and Rafferty demonstrated how they “checked under his hood,” batting at and sniffing his crotch: “One guy, he tried to wear it like a hat.” As for Rafferty’s departure, it wasn’t so cordial: She said the aliens “bitch-slapped me out of an open hatch,” and she landed on… Kim Jong-Un’s face in North Korea? “But hey, not the worst place I’ve been on all fours,” she sniffed.

Ryan Gosling is such a treasure. He’s just so good at everything he does.

“I’ve killed more chubbies than diabetes” might be the best line in the whole thing. Shame that it gets lost under the laughter from the previous gag.

By far the best episode this season. We haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. And thanks for not having a political cold opening.

The cast couldn’t keep a straight face or get through a skit without laughing — multiple times. Totally unprofessional.

I totally agree. My favourite episodes of the Carol Burnett show were when they couldn’t hold character – the infamous dentist chair skit with Harvey and Tim as one example. The more they crack up the funnier it is.

I’m not always a fan of Kate McKinnon, but my gawd is she funny as this character.

Wow. You sure sound like a barrel of laughs. The best part is when they can’t keep it together. Lighten up. Put the Twinkies down, leave mommy’s basement, go outside and get some fresh air.

I could totally understand how they were struggling to keep a straight face and how they started laughing. The Beavis and Butthead. skit was totally hilarious 🤣! Last night’s episode was fabulous 👍👍!

The Beavis and Butthead sketch was by far the best of the night! I haven’t laughed so hard at an SNL bit since Samberg or Hader were cast members.

I haven’t laughed that hard in so long. I didn’t watch Beavis and Butthead much but knew just enough, and it was clear Heidi Gardner, who rarely breaks, has not seen that makeup. It was hysterical. All the sketches were great. The engagement sketch also had me in stitches. “You are a key part of this” also had me laughing.

When combined, great writing and superior talent will always produce outstanding comedy. Add to that a wonderful and responsive audience surrounded by the SNL vibe and it doesn’t get better! We all remember those earlier skits and fresh talent……. they set the bar pretty high. We know it when we see it! And We Saw it last Saturday! Thank you all so much!

9 burning questions for resident alien season 4 & what we think the answers will be.

Although Resident Alien season 4 hasn't yet been confirmed, the next installment of the Syfy show needs to answer questions posed by season 3.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Resident Alien season 3 finale.

  • Resident Alien season 4 needs to address the cliffhangers and loose ends left in the chaotic and exciting season 3 finale.
  • A new shapeshifting insectoid alien villain, the Mantid, poses a threat in Resident Alien season 4.
  • Characters like Sheriff Mike, D'arcy, and Heather will face challenges and questions in Resident Alien season 4 as they deal with new dangers.

Resident Alien season 3 ended on a huge cliffhanger that left several questions about various characters unanswered, so the next installment will need to tie up some loose ends. Although Resident Alien season 4 has yet to be confirmed, the writers have made it clear through their work in Resident Alien season 3's ending that there's plenty more story to be told. The fate of Harry Vanderspeigle isn't the only part of the plot that needs addressing. Many of the other residents of Patience, Colorado were also left in compelling scenarios that beg for resolution.

Even though Resident Alien season 3 was the shortest installment of the Syfy show yet, its eight-episode run was one of the most chaotic and exciting eras in the show's history. The stakes had never been higher, with both the safety of Earth being called into question but also the welfare of specific individuals. While certain threats have passed for now, Resident Alien season 4 won't be a laid-back affair . New and returning figures entered the fray in season 3's final moments that will strongly influence the narrative going forward.

Resident Alien season 4's new villain is a member of a shapeshifting insectoid alien race called the Mantids. While the story's next big antagonist doesn't yet have a name, the Mantid has already proven to be a powerful, unpleasant, and cruel individual. As such, it's all the more concerning that Resident Alien season 3 ended with Max and Sahar visiting the Mantid while under the impression they were dropping in on Harry. Max's mutation immediately allowed him to see through the Mantid's ruse, but it's unclear how the nefarious alien will handle being rumbled.

The cold open of Resident Alien season 3, episode 8, "Homecoming," shows the Mantid easily decapitating and consuming the head of an unfortunate individual, so Max and Sahar could be in great danger . That being said, the young duo have a decent amount of plot armor when it comes to their survival. While it's unlikely that the pair will be killed by the Mantid, the show's new bad guy could still hold them hostage and impersonate them around town to conceal the fact they're missing.

8 How Will Sheriff Mike Handle His Encounter With The Greys?

Patience's sheriff had his world turned upside-down.

Mike is the Resident Alien character who has grown the most over the Syfy show's three seasons, but he has always been steadfast in his belief that extraterrestrial life is nothing but a myth. However, "Homecoming" ends with Patience's sheriff coming face-to-face with a member of the Grey Alien race . Mike's direct encounter with an alien lifeform is surely all the proof he needs to finally accept what the rest of the main characters already know.

It won't be an easy transition into believing in aliens for a strong-minded character like Mike, but he'll be left short of other options.

The intense stubbornness of Sheriff Mike could lead to him denying what he saw with his own two eyes, as will likely be the case for a short time. Eventually, this refusal to accept the truth should fade, meaning he can join the fight against the Greys and the Mantid in Resident Alien season 4 . It won't be an easy transition into believing in aliens for a strong-minded character like Mike, but he'll be left short of other options.

7 Did The Greys Do Anything To The Hawthornes' Baby?

D'arcy brought the baby to earth for the first time in the resident alien season 3 finale.

One of the most horrifying storylines of Resident Alien season 3 was discovering what the Greys had done with Kate's baby at the end of Resident Alien season 2 . The helpless infant was rescued by D'arcy during season 3's epic finale but had been aboard the Greys' ship for its entire life before that moment. While the Hawthornes' little girl is now back home where she belongs, it's tough to believe the baby hasn't been altered in some way.

The Hawthorne family already has one unique family member in Max, as he sports the mutation that allows him to see through the disguises of all aliens - including Harry. The baby may also share this talent, which could have been why the Greys were holding on to her to study her. If not, then the youngest Hawthorne may have been subjected to experiments to see if any other useful abilities revealed themselves.

6 How Will Harry & Bridget Escape In Resident Alien Season 4?

The mantid tricked harry into imprisonment.

Resident Alien 's main character ended the season 3 finale imprisoned aboard the Greys' moon ship with Bridget. After being tricked by the Mantid, Harry is currently being impersonated by his new adversary on Earth , while everyone else also believes Bridget is dead. While escape looks like it could be an elusive concept in Resident Alien season 4, there's actually a simple way they can regain their freedom.

Harry mentions a specific Mantid in Resident Alien season 1 , episode 9, "Welcome Aliens," suggesting he has already met the show's new villain.

"Homecoming" serves as a reunion between Harry Vanderspeigle and Robert Hutchins , with the latter now residing on the Greys' ship in the belief there is nothing left for him on Earth. As such, Robert refuses to go with Asta, D'arcy, and the fake Harry when they flee the enormous spacecraft. This means Robert is still on board, and he can help Harry and Bridget escape, just as he helped the others in the Resident Alien season 3 finale.

5 Will The Alien Tracker Be A Friend Or Foe?

Peter bach has undergone extensive cybernetic augmentation.

Peter Bach, also known as the Alien Tracker, is believed dead by the end of Resident Alien season 2, but season 3 reintroduces the character in a new form. Like Max Hawthorne, Peter can see through an alien's disguise , and General McCallister planned on using that ability to aid in her plan to save Earth. To do so, Linda Hamilton's Resident Alien character augmented the body of Peter with formidable government tech that was supposed to allow her to puppet the compromised Alien Tracker.

Resident Alien Season 4 Must Keep The Best Alien Race Change Made During Season 3

What the general didn't count on was Peter regaining his sentience mid-mission. While Peter and Harry parted as allies during their last encounter , it's uncertain what Peter's new upgrades have done to him. Thankfully, he seems aware enough to reach out to Liv in "Homecoming," so he may be more of a hero than a villain. In addition, he will be a key component in bringing down the Mantid and possibly even the Greys.

4 Has D'arcy's Quest For Heroism Been Quenched?

Alice wetterlund's resident alien character was willing to sacrifice herself.

D'arcy's main arc in Resident Alien season 3 was one of trying to find purpose. She wanted to make a notable impact, and she finally got her chance when Harry completed the bomb to take down the Greys' ship. While D'arcy ended up being freed of the responsibility of sacrificing herself to save the planet , she was still able to undertake the vital task of rescuing the Hawthornes' baby from the Greys' moon ship in the Resident Alien season 3 finale . What's now unclear is whether this was enough to satisfy her need to be the hero.

While D'arcy may not have expected to come back from her mission alive, she still has an important role to play in stopping the Greys and possibly even the Mantid from achieving their respective goals.

It's likely that D'arcy does indeed feel a huge sense of accomplishment for saving the youngest Hawthorne. However, it would be out of character for her to step aside with the feeling that her work is done. While D'arcy may not have expected to come back from her mission alive, she still has an important role to play in stopping the Greys and possibly even the Mantid from achieving their respective goals. In short, D'arcy still has plenty of opportunities for more slo-mo action shots , like in the Resident Alien season 3 finale.

3 How Long Will It Take For The Mantid To Be Discovered?

The mandtid can't stay hidden forever.

"Homecoming" reveals that the Mantid planned to take on Harry's form and live in his cabin by the lake. The new villain even had several interactions with Asta and the others while impersonating Harry, and they all fell for the ruse. Although the Mantid's plan appeared to be going off without a hitch, his cover was blown almost immediately when Max visits and immediately realizes his friend isn't the alien who answers the door.

So, the Mantid's true nature has already been revealed, and the Alien Tracker will also be able to do this. As a result, what it comes down to is a matter of time. The Mantid likely won't kill Max or Sahar due to them being key members of the Resident Alien cast , so it depends on how long he keeps them hostage while the Mantid completes whatever plot it is he has in mind. In all likelihood, the Mantid's real identity will be wider knowledge long before the end of Resident Alien season 4.

2 Will Heather Come Back In Resident Alien Season 4?

Heather was forced to leave earth by the greys in season 3.

One of the most heart-wrenching moments in Resident Alien season 3 was when Heather was forced to betray and then abandon Harry while the pair were so madly in love. While Joseph was the one who blackmailed Heather into exile, and he's now switched sides, that doesn't mean it's safe for her to return. At the time, Joseph was working for the Greys, who had threatened Heather's family if she didn't do their bidding. Unfortunately, while the Greys' plot was foiled, they're still very present.

Due to the Greys' moon ship still being in orbit of Earth, Heather coming back could put her family at risk . On the other hand, her presence may no longer concern the Greys since their plan failed in "Homecoming." So, while it could be dangerous for Heather to reconnect with Harry in Resident Alien season 4, it could be a gamble she's willing to take if the Greys have lost interest in her for now.

1 Will The Greys Continue Their Plan To Transform Earth's Atmosphere?

The greys' persistence shouldn't be underestimated.

The Greys' plot to use the Yellowstone caldera to terraform Earth in Resident Alien season 3 was the show's biggest threat. Before their real plan was revealed, it was believed that the Greys wanted to destroy the planet, not turn it into their new home. With Joseph's help, Earth's atmosphere was saved from transformation , foiling the Greys' insidious plans for the future of their civilization.

Resident Alien Season 4's New Villain Means It's Even More Important That 1 Character Doesn't Return

The Greys may have been stopped for now, but they have resources that seem almost endless, and they probably won't take kindly to being stopped when they were so close to success. While it's possible the Greys will simply reload and try again to populate the Earth , they could also turn violent instead and enact the plan everyone thought they were originally attempting and try to destroy the planet in Resident Alien season 4.
