Hamadeh Palace

Visiting the Hamadeh Palace in the picturesque village of Baakline perched on Lebanon’s Shouf mountains is an unforgettable experience.

As you step over the threshold, Talaat Hamadeh, one of the palace’s inheritors and a descendant of the original family, immediately transports you back in time. As you listen to the sound of Talaat’s voice, you will stop to wonder whether he had been there first, back in the time of Maan princes, or if the intricate arches had first laid their foundations to one day accommodate, the most timeless, peaceful and elegant hosts you could encounter. (The Emir Fakhr-al-Din ibn Maan being the 1st prince of the State of Lebanon between the 17th and 19th centuries under the Ottoman Empire).

hamadeh-palace-lebanon-traveler

Talaat will then invite you to enter a sea blue walled room, bearing the portraits of the three members of the Hamadeh family who held the position of “Sheikh Akl”, the spiritual leader of the Druze sect. The room is flooded with an exquisite yet discreetly revealing light that unleashes visions of gathered elders discussing, over a cup of hot tea from the stove, matters of importance to the community. On the right side wall, a door, or more precisely an opening through thick walls, leads you to a surprise.

You will pause to decide if you are entering a real room or if Talaat is allowing you the privilege to see a reflection of the timeless personal space he inhabits. In here, Talaat has accumulated objects of the past and he smiles while watching you react to the story they tell our collective memory. Nested with other personal remembrances you thought were gone forever, an old radio awakens tunes of Oum Koulthoun’s Thursday night songs from their deep sleep. Although you were total strangers before entering this shrine to time he has painstakingly protected for years, Talaat has managed to connect with you.

hamadeh-palace-lebanon-traveler

Besides reception rooms that house objects collected from around the estate and portraits of the Hamadeh family, Talaat will eventually lead you into a long and slender room where supporting arches challenge each other to reflect skilled craftsmanship and a sense of strength, stability and security. He has ridden the walls of the arches of their inner coat and the stone appears to play with the light coming in from narrow windows on the sidewalls. Talaat has not yet decided what he wants to do with the room. He is thinking of transforming it into a museum showcasing more objects found on the estate. The room could easily be a venue for committee meetings, concerts or art installations.

Talaat will then lead you to the main entrance of the estate, passing through a paved way that dates back a few hundred years. The location of the rings, used to tie horses in the courtyard, are still visible. The entrance door with its metal inserts opens onto the internal reception courtyard where Talaat’s elders used to gather, seated on stone benches lining the sidewalls.

hamadeh-palace-lebanon-traveler

The visit will probably conclude with a cup of coffee in the courtyard surrounded by flourishing vegetation in summer, or with a cup of hot tea from the stove in Talaat’s office in winter. The door he opens for you is adorned with brightly colored patterns that were in fashion centuries ago. Talaat will take you on a trip through history and will tell you the story of these old stones that have survived time trapping him in their embrace. What a wonderful way to make the country’s history come alive.

Recount Confirms Democrat’s Victory in Arizona’s Attorney General Race

Kris Mayes defeated Abraham Hamadeh, a Republican election denier, by 280 votes out of 2.5 million ballots cast, a court announced.

By Neil Vigdor

Kris Mayes, the Democratic candidate for attorney general in Arizona, prevailed on Thursday in a recount by a razor-thin margin over Abraham Hamadeh, a Republican, bringing clarity to one of the last undecided races of the midterms.

The margin of victory for Ms. Mayes was 280 votes out of about 2.5 million ballots cast in the November election, said Judge Timothy J. Thomason of the Maricopa County Superior Court, who announced the recount’s results in a brief judicial hearing. The recount reduced the margin between the two candidates by about half, with the Election Day results showing Mr. Hamadeh trailing Ms. Mayes by 511 votes.

Mr. Hamadeh, whose legal effort to have himself declared the winner was dismissed by a judge on Friday, continued to sow doubt in the election results, saying in a post on Twitter that “we must get to the bottom of this election” and calling for ballots to be inspected.

But during closing arguments in last week’s trial, Mr. Hamadeh’s lawyer, Timothy La Sota, acknowledged that he did not have any evidence of intentional misconduct or any vote discrepancies that would make up the gap between the candidates.

On Thursday, Ms. Mayes shared a photo of her certificate of election on Twitter and issued a statement about the recount results , saying that “democracy is truly a team sport” and that she was ready to get to work as attorney general.

The recount was conducted by county election officials, who reported their results to the secretary of state, Katie Hobbs, a Democrat. She won the governor’s race last month against the Kari Lake, a Republican election denier who continues to dispute her defeat .

The outcome of the attorney general’s contest dealt another blow to Republicans in a state where the party entered the midterms with heightened expectations of creating a red wave by seizing on high inflation and the flagging job approval numbers of President Biden.

That perceived advantage turned out to be a mirage, with Democrats winning most of the marquee statewide offices.

Election deniers pointed to technical glitches on Election Day , which disrupted some ballot counting in Arizona’s most populous county, Maricopa, to fuel conspiracy theories and baseless claims. Mr. Hamadeh and Ms. Lake contended that the election had been compromised.

But election officials in Maricopa County, which is led by Republicans, have defended the voting process and said that there was no evidence that voters were turned away from casting ballots.

Arizona Attorney General candidate Abe Hamadeh tours the Yuma sector border

hamadeh tours

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Attorney General candidate Abe Hamadeh toured the Yuma sector border Monday morning.

Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines and Representative Tim Dunn showed Hamadeh the popular migrant crossing spots along with Doug Ducey's shipping container project.

While on the tour, Hamadeh was able to see several migrants cross into the United States and be apprehended by Yuma Sector Border Patrol.

He says securing the border will be one of his top priorities, if he wins the race for Arizona Attorney General.

PHOENIX (AP) — A recount of votes has confirmed Democrat Kris Mayes narrowly defeated Republican Abraham Hamadeh in the Arizona attorney general’s race, one of the closest elections in state history.

The highly anticipated results announced Thursday in Maricopa County Superior Court are among the last in the country to come out of November’s election and solidified another victory for Democrats who shunned election fraud conspiracies in what used to be a solidly Republican state.

With Hamadeh’s defeat, Republicans running statewide in battleground states who spread former President Donald Trump’s false claim that the 2020 election was stolen have all lost their races .

Mayes finished 280 votes ahead of Hamadeh, down from a lead of 511 in the original count. The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear.

“I’m excited and ready to get to work as your next attorney general and vow to be your lawyer for the people,” Mayes said in a statement.

Judge Timothy Thomason, who also announced the results of recounts in two other races, said Republican Tom Horne prevailed in the race for state superintendent of public instruction and Republican Liz Harris won a state legislative seat in the Phoenix suburbs.

The automatic recounts were required because the races were so close.

Outside court, Mayes attorney Dan Barr said the results should give the public confidence in elections, despite the adjustments in vote totals as a result of the recount.

“They didn’t just do a rubber stamp of what it was,” Barr said. “They did a careful evaluation of the votes and they came up with a different result. And so I think people should have a lot of confidence in the process.”

In a tweet, Hamadeh said the discrepancies in the latest results from his race were shockingly high. “My legal team will be assessing our options to make sure every vote is counted,” wrote Hamadeh, who hasn’t conceded to Mayes.

Mayes and Hamadeh were not in court during the hearing.

Hamadeh had filed a separate challenge of the results in his race, but a judge dismissed that case last week.

Hamadeh alleged problems with ballot printers in Maricopa County had led to a series of issues that disenfranchised voters and that his race was affected by improper handling of ballots that were duplicated or adjudicated by people because they could not be read by tabulators. In throwing out the lawsuit, a judge concluded Hamadeh didn’t prove the errors in vote counting that he had alleged. Records show there were 623 more votes recorded in the recount than results that were certified across the state about a month ago. About 500 were identified in Pinal County, which attributed the discrepancy between the certified returns and the recount results to human errors. One of the issues, which affected 63 ballots, was tied to voting machine settings and ballots with unclear markings.

In the race for superintendent of public instruction, Horne ended the recount with a 9,188-vote lead. Hoffman had previously conceded to Horne, a former schools chief who served one term as attorney general before losing the 2014 primary. Horne posted a net gain of 221 votes in the recount.

Horne had criticized Hoffman for embracing progressive teaching and promised to shut down any hint of “critical race theory,” which is not taught in state schools but is a hot-button issue for social conservatives. He also had said schools were shut down for far too long during the pandemic at Hoffman’s urging.

Harris won with a 275-vote advantage over Republican Julie Willoughby in the race for a seat in state House District 13, which includes parts of the Phoenix-area suburbs of Chandler, Sun Lakes and Gilbert. Harris had a net gain of five votes in the recount.

Although Republican Kari Lake filed an unsuccessful lawsuit challenging her loss to Democrat Katie Hobbs in the Arizona governor’s race by just over 17,000 votes, the governor’s race wasn’t close enough to trigger an automatic recount.

Recounts are required in Arizona in races where the margin between the leading candidates is 0.5% or less. Hobbs defeated Lake by 0.67%.

The judge who dismissed Lake’s case rejected her claim that problems with ballot printers at some polling places on Election Day were the result of intentional misconduct.

Lake, who has not conceded to Lake, is appealing the dismissal of her lawsuit with the Arizona Supreme Court. Hobbs takes office as governor on Monday.

Once a Republican stronghold, Arizona’s top races were won by Democrats in November. Republicans had nominated a slate of candidates backed by Trump who focused on supporting his false claims about the 2020 election. In addition to Hobbs and Mayes, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly was reelected and Democrat Adrian Fontes won the race for secretary of state.

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Abraham is an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army Reserve and just returned from a 14 month long deployment to Saudi Arabia. On behalf of the United States Army, Abraham negotiated military sales and managed the training for Saudi Arabia’s domestic security forces both in the Kingdom and in the United States. He implemented the first of its kind new enhanced security vetting in response to the 2019 Pensacola terrorist attack. His direct counterparts were generals, colonels, and lieutenant colonels in the Saudi forces as well as high ranking civilians in their respective ministries.

Abraham is a former prosecutor of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Abraham has appeared in court to prosecute criminals, uphold victims’ rights, and seek justice for the community. Abraham earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Arizona State University and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Arizona College of Law. During his law studies, Abraham was awarded the Udall Fellowship by the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys’ Advisory Council which placed him at the city, county, state, and federal prosecutor offices.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

  • Border Security is National Security. Our borders are not protected, and they’re not secure. As Attorney General, I will enforce state laws since the federal government refuses to take action. Create a Task Force unit within our law enforcement agency to target border crimes. Drug cartels are invading our southern border and even our neighborhoods; we must classify them as terrorists and protect our communities.
  • Our country demands free and FAIR elections. As Attorney General, I will rebuild the confidence of our elections by prosecuting election fraud to the fullest extent of the law. The day I take office in January 2023 we will prioritize the Election Integrity Unit and increase the number of prosecutors and investigators in order to be prepared and protect the 2024 election. Confidence in our elections is the cornerstone to our country – we must restore voters trust.
  • The left has infiltrated every aspect of our lives and is trying to erase history in order to reshape the future. We cannot accept their radical dismantling of our nation’s history. Our society demands freedom of speech and thought. Many Arizonans themselves have been censored by Big Tech. The behemoths of the tech world have made their success due to the free-market America affords them, yet they openly criticize it and stifle free speech. Big Tech has even censored President Trump while allowing terrorists to have a global platform. As Attorney General I will always protect Arizonans’ First Amendment rights.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Republicans can’t afford more politicians who are low energy, perennial losing candidates, or lobbyists. Arizona needs an Attorney General with bold leadership who will bring new energy, big ideas, and BOLD action to fight back against the radical left. As Attorney General, I will FIGHT for our state, our country, and ALWAYS defend the Constitution. There’s a war on our police waged by the radical left. Not only are they defunding the police in cities across the country, but more importantly, they’re demoralizing our law enforcement officers. There’s been a 27% increase in the homicide rate in Arizona, criminals no longer fear any repercussions for their crimes. As Attorney General, I will restore LAW and ORDER and restore morale with our law enforcement officers. Without the Second Amendment, no other Amendment is secured. I oppose “red-flag” laws, and as Attorney General, I will fight back against the federal government’s intrusion into our sacred right to defend ourselves. As Attorney General, we will create an Office of Military Legal Assistance that will provide free services to Active-Duty, Reserve, National Guard, and retired service-members on civil law matters. There’s a limit on what military JAG lawyers can assist with, and the Arizona Attorney General’s new Office of Military Legal Assistance will help bridge that gap to the 10% of Arizonans who have answered their nation’s call to serve.

Rana Nazzal Hamadeh: 1/1000th of a Dunam

September 15–October 23, 2021 Student Gallery

1/1000th of a Dunam is a multimedia exhibition exploring Palestinian assertions of belonging through the site of soil—an epistemic space where land and belonging are imagined, when in reality they have been denied. Displaced peoples often collect and cherish soils from their lands of origin, and this practice embodies a knowledge explored in this exhibition. All the soil used here, both material and virtual, was collected in Palestine. It symbolizes memory and takes on new meaning as it travels from one occupied land to another and takes new forms.

1/1000th of a Dunam is a testament to the collaborative nature of belonging to particular lands under settler-colonialism, but this virtual recreation of land is also incomplete, problematic, and demands more. Contradictions are embraced as the viewer is invited to consider notions of land and its multidimensional significance for the colonized everywhere.

Trump Not Sending His Best

Picture your ideal Republican candidate. Would they look something like this?

     1. An “ anchor baby ” (technically, “illegal immigrant”);

2. Parents were illegal aliens from Syria, who avoided being deported only because of their “American citizen” anchor baby, i.e. “the candidate”;

3. Father indicted for firebombing a synagogue (charges dropped when co-conspirators refused to testify against him);

4. Supported Sen. Marco Rubio’s amnesty;

5. Was  thrilled  that President George W. Bush gave a speech at a mosque on 9/11;

6. Constantly demands that Americans become entangled in foreign conflicts having nothing to do with our country;

7. Has been driven to a cursing rage at me for mentioning that immigrants commit a lot of crime.

No? Well, that’s Abe Hamadeh, the Trump-endorsed candidate for Arizona’s 8th   congressional district. (I happen to notice Hamadeh because he’s running against the excellent Blake Masters, who actually  is  the ideal Republican candidate.)

Like many on-the-go immigrants, Hamadeh immediately abandoned all of his previous positions the moment he saw an advantage to doing so.  What do I need to say to fool the rubes?

He’s the Alexander Vindman of the right, the Dinesh D’Souza of the Muslims, the immigrant credit card fraudster of electoral politics.

Before running for office in Arizona, Hamadeh deleted his Twitter feed and suddenly became more Trumpy than Trump. On immigration, he said : “We got to start rebuilding that wall on state land. We got to start enforcing state prosecutions, going after the human smuggling and all the drugs coming in, and prosecuting the illegal immigrants as trespassers.”

This from the amnesty-supporting anchor baby.

At least Trump seems to actually believe what he says about immigration; he’s just too lazy to do it. Back in 2013, when Rubio nearly destroyed our country with amnesty, Trump relentlessly attacked the bill, saying, for example:

— “Immigration reform is fine — but don’t rush to give away our country! Sounds like that’s what’s happening.” (Jan. 30, 2013)

— “Amnesty is suicide for Republicans. Not one of those 12 million who broke our laws will vote Republican. Obama is laughing at @GOP.” (March 19, 2013)

— “TRUMP: IMMIGRATION BILL A REPUBLICAN ‘DEATH WISH.’” (Breitbart, June 3, 2013)

Meanwhile, Hamadeh was touting Rubio’s amnesty as a “fix” for what we have now. Which is no amnesty. For good measure, he called Rick Santorum a “ racist ,” and me a “ BITCH .”

Despite court records to the contrary (partially reprinted in The Arizona Republic), and his father’s admission that he was in the country illegally (according to a contemporaneous news article on the synagogue bombing 30 years ago), Hamadeh told the Republic: “My parents proudly came to the United States LEGALLY in 1989 and were rewarded for waiting in line LEGALLY with U.S. citizenship in 2007 and 2009 by the United States Department of State.”

Also like many immigrants, Hamadeh has a keen interest in the old country. From 2012 to 2018, he tweeted incessantly about the Middle East, especially Syria.

A non-exhaustive list:

“I’ve given credit to the Brits, at least they’re debating action in Syria. Where’s our Congress?”

“I’m optimistic with the new council adopting a pro-freedom liberal approach in Syria. Now hopefully they have sway with #FSA rebels”

“Haass is right: US Must Respond to the Atrocities in Syria.”

“You can’t say ‘I’m against Bashar, so I’m with ALL of #FSA.’ This isn’t a sports game. Must be for a pro-freedom agenda. #Syria.”

“Syria is in our national security interest.”

“If Assad falls this week, FSA needs to take the higher ground by not targeting Alawites & other minorities.”

Are Arizona’s voters similarly fixated on Syria’s internal politics? How many know or care what “FSA” is? Alawites?

Naturally, Hamadeh also longed for war with Russia, tweeting: “We cannot allow [Russia] to take over Ukraine.”  We?  How many wars are these immigrants going to make us fight?

But now Hamadeh wants us to believe he’s an America First patriot.

That’s when the dogs start growling.  What’s the matter, Scout? Why are you barking? That’s just a regular American.

Another flashing red light blaring SCAMSTER! is that Hamadeh not only embraced Trump’s “stolen election” claim, but took it 10 times further. After losing the 2022 attorney general race by a coat of paint (280 votes), Hamadeh wouldn’t let it rest, bringing not one, not two, but three utterly frivolous lawsuits demanding that the courts make him attorney general.

All three lawsuits were tossed out of court — including by a judge appointed by Gov. Jan Brewer — finally ending with sanctions against him.

Anyone who knows anything about politics knows you never contest an election,  even if it was stolen.  Voters reward graciousness and punish sour grapes. Why would Hamadeh make such an ass of himself?

Because that’s how you get Trump’s endorsement.

As you may recall, in the last election cycle, Trump endorsed candidates who’d spoken at QAnon rallies, who said women having their rapist’s baby can be “ healing ,” who’d left a string of illegitimate children across the South, who denounced the sitting Republican governor as a “Chinese communist sympathizer,” who said women who have abortions should be prosecuted for murder .

What was their mysterious appeal to Trump? Only one thing: They refused to accept the results of the 2020 election.

Surprising no one, all these Trump-endorsed, less-than-ideal candidates suffered spectacular defeats on Election Day, handing the U.S. Senate and a few governorships to the Democrats. Whether Trump wins or loses in November, the key to avoiding national catastrophe is for Republicans to win Congress, and you ain’t gonna do that by relying on Trump’s endorsements.

You may be counting the days until you can vote for Trump again. But before you give any credence to his advice in other races, try to remember how you felt the day after the 2022 midterm election, when the “red wave” turned into a Republican bloodbath.

You’d be better off trusting Scout.

Why does Trent Franks, who's running for Congress, have a partnership with Sikh TV outlet?

The Arizona-based pro-Punjab media outlet Satluj TV has developed an unlikely ally in Arizona’s political landscape: former U.S. Rep. Trent Franks.

Franks, a Republican, served as a representative for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District for a decade and a half. In 2017, he resigned from his post after accusations of sexual harassment surfaced related to claims that he pressured two of his former aides to serve as surrogate mothers for him and his wife.

Now, after Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., announced that she's not seeking reelection, Franks is running for his former seat.

How it ended the last time: Former Rep. Trent Franks wants to return to Congress

The former representative’s relationship with the organization began more than four years ago when he and the organization’s founder, Tony Mangat, were introduced by mutual friends, Mangat said.

The two quickly became good friends.

As the news organization was getting off the ground, Franks and Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, who is running for U.S. Senate, became partners of Satluj TV to help with that effort.

Franks often serves as a pundit, while Lamb can be found in the network’s promotional materials.

With the help of his parents, Mangat fled India in 1992 for political reasons to the United States, where he would eventually settle in Arizona. He started his own trucking company in the state and developed The Mangat Group, a Glendale-based land development group.

From there, Mangat was able to establish and support other businesses, such as Satluj TV, which he founded. He said the creation of Satluj TV satisfied his desire to create a media organization that would focus on the issues that were facing the Sikh community, with a specific focus on promoting a separate state for Sikhs.

The movement, known as Khalistan, aims to create the state out of the Indian state of Punjab, which is located in northern India.

Today, the movement has seen support in Sikh communities in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia, according to Al Jazeera .

In its coverage of the Khalistan movement, Satluj TV is “definitely a media outlet that has its biases,” said Monica Chadha, an associate professor of journalism at the University of Arizona who has studied news media startups.

The media outlet only shows one “pro-Punjab” perspective leading Chadha to "see red flags … in terms of news reporting."

Among the tabs at the top of Satluj TV's website is one on "Khalistan" that "shows that they are at the far end of the spectrum," said Chadha, who worked for the BBC's India Bureau for almost a decade.

Despite the site's bias, Franks has become a mainstay of the media organization’s activism and coverage.

Specifically, he has gained respect within the Sikh community for speaking out on the murder of a leader and activist in the Sikh separatist movement in Canada.

On June 18, 2023, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, an outspoken critic of the Indian government, was murdered outside of a Sikh temple by a masked gunman in British Columbia, Canada. And while India has denied any role in his killing, Franks alluded to the incident in a Satluj TV appearance soon after.

“I would hope that the Indian government would never be unwise enough to be behind any killings of religious dissidents in other countries,” Franks said in a July 2023 interview on Satluj TV’s YouTube channel . “But if that should ever happen in America, we will run it to the ground.”

Franks received praise from the Sikh community for his decision to speak out, Mangat said. And two months after Franks’ initial comments, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the government would be investigating “credible allegations” that Indian government agents were linked to Nijjar’s murder.

While Franks criticized Trudeau for not speaking out earlier, he said, “If it’s proven that the national government of India held any connection to this outrage, they should be held accountable by the entire world,” in a Satluj TV appearance in November 2023 .

Franks’ comments about Nijjar’s murder were met with great support from the Sikh community, said Mandeep Kaur, a volunteer for Satluj TV.

“The entire community has a lot of respect and sentiment (for Franks),” she said. “He’s a well-known figure in the community.”

Most recently, Franks appeared March 1 on the site's YouTube channel to criticize India's police on their actions toward farmers and to call on President Joe Biden to act.

Respect for Franks within the Sikh community and his partnership with Satluj TV has led to him receiving an endorsement from the media outlet. In a Jan. 29 video , Satluj TV’s anchor Angus King called him a “passionate defender of human rights.”

“Congress is in need of politicians with experience and maturity,” King said. “(Franks) clearly has that depth of competence and capability.”

In Arizona's race for the 8th Congressional District, Franks is running against Arizona Speaker of the House Ben Toma; state Sen. Anthony Kern; venture capitalist and former U.S. Senate candidate Blake Masters; and former prosecutor and Arizona attorney general candidate Abe Hamadeh, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

During a recent debate on Arizona PBS, Franks apologized for the 2017 scandal that led to his quitting the House of Representatives, saying his discussing the surrogate topic with staff members was "totally inappropriate for me as someone who had supervisorial oversight over an employee."

Satluj TV’s video statement put a sympathetic slant on the actions that led to Franks’ resignation, saying it came from “a desire to expand his loving family” and that Franks “had quietly discussed that matter with two members of staff." The statement said the story was “pounced upon by the opposition and spun into a deeply negative narrative."

"Tony is a precious friend," Franks said in a statement to The Arizona Republic. "It's been my honor to work with him both in business and to appear on the Satluj Network."

Mangat, who is a voter in the 8th District, holds the same ideas about Franks’ resignation and run for Congress as his outlet and he “100 and 10%” plans on supporting his friend in his congressional run.

“We need people like him in politics,” Mangat said.
