Solo Travel Tips Mumbai, India

Solo Travel Tips: Mumbai, India

Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is India’s biggest city and best known as the home of the Bollywood movie industry. Several highly acclaimed Hollywood movies have been filmed here, including Slumdog Millionaire and The Lunchbox.

It is also well-known for its chaotic streets, local markets, the famous dabbawala lunch deliverymen, and of course its railway station that’s a UNESCO heritage site.

After my weeklong trip in The Golden Chariot (where I met the gorgeous Bollywood actress Shenaz Treasurywala) I made sure to visit Mumbai. It’s a huge metropolis, it’s overcrowded, polluted, and the traffic is bad, but after a week of guided tours on the luxury train, I was very much looking forward to traveling on my own in the so-called City of Dreams.

Arriving in Mumbai

View of the Taj Mahal Hotel and India Gate from the sea.

There are several ways to reach Mumbai from Bangalore (Bengaluru). There are daily flights and lots of trains. You can also go by bus or private transport. I chose the most comfortable: a 2-hour flight via Air India (cost: $35). In comparison, if I took the train, it would have taken me 23 hours to arrive in Mumbai and cost me $30.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Mumbai (BOM) is the second busiest airport in India (after Delhi). It takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to go to downtown Mumbai from there, depending on the time of day you arrive.

The easiest way to get to your hotel in the city is by taking a prepaid taxi (use “Cool Cab”). You can find them near the exit of the arrivals area. Alternatively (which is what I did), you can book a private airport transfer via Delhi Airport Service . Their drivers spoke English well and made sure I found my hotel.

You can also use Uber or Ola. There is no metro that goes directly to the airport.

Where to Stay in Mumbai

When I booked my hotel, I didn’t know much about the geography of Mumbai, so I just used Booking.com to look for a hotel within my budget. I also filtered based on location.

I ended up in Chembur, which is a suburb of Mumbai and not that close to the center. While the hotel was fine (big rooms, fast Wifi, free breakfast), I won’t recommend it. It’s by the road (noisy!) and a bit far from the center.

In general, if you want convenience, choose a hotel in Colaba area , near the Gate of India. Based on my friends’ experience, here are some places I can recommend.

Luxury Hotels in Mumbai

The gorgeous Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Nothing spells luxury more than the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel . Its colonial style structure faces the sea, and provides an excellent view of the Gate of India. According to one review:

“I do not know any place/anybody on earth after my parents that has pampered me this much. Hotel is a piece of heaven. Starting from the entrance to the hotel room, I felt like I am a princess. Everybody is so kind and helpful. It was an amazing trip for us.”

The best thing about the Taj Mahal? A luxury room good for 2 people costs only $214! Click here to find great deals .

Another grand hotel that comes highly recommended is the Trident Nariman Point Hotel . Guests rave about their location (great views of the sea), their facilities, and food. Their staff, in particular, seem very well trained. A common thread in reviews is how the staff go out of their way to make the guests feel welcome.

And yes, you can stay in this top-rated, luxury hotel for only US$130 per day!

Budget Hotels in Mumbai

Celebrating Holi in Mumbai.

If you prefer budget accommodation, I can recommend Backpacker Panda in Colaba. It is a few minutes walk from the Gate of India and have friendly and helpful staff that are full of advice on where to go and what to do. Dorm rooms are clean (US$13) and the atmosphere is great.

They also arrange activities for special occasions; it was Holi when we were there and they organized the celebration by providing the colors and some food. I can’t recommend them enough.

Things To Do in Mumbai for Solo Travelers

Mumbai is huge and there’s a lot to see and experience. To maximize my time, I booked a half-day tour of Mumbai with W Travels . I also walked around a lot on my own, taking the local train, the auto rickshaw, and Uber.

I didn’t have any bad experience while going around on my own; at one point, I even went back to my hotel late at night. However, it still pays to observe safety precautions when you travel , especially if you’re traveling solo (see some safety tips below).

Here are the must-sees in Mumbai that you can cover in a day or two.

Check out the historic architecture in Mumbai

The Municipal Corporation Building across CST.

Also known as Victoria Terminus (tip: to sound like a local, refer to it as VT), the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST, featured photo) is Mumbai’s only UNESCO world heritage site. I got to see it at sunset, and the soft light made it all the more beautiful.

The historic railway station, probably Asia’s busiest with three million passengers using it daily, was built in 1887 and heavily influenced by British Victorian, Hindu, and Islamic styles. While the exterior is magnificent, you won’t find the interior the same way. Still, it seems efficient. I’ve taken the local train here everyday back to my hotel and never had a problem whether in the ticket booth or with the trains themselves.

Just across the CST is the Municipal Corporation Building , another beautiful Gothic structure built in late 1890s. It has a beautiful central dome, ornamental arches, intricate carvings, and elaborately domed corner towers.

Go to the Gateway of India

The impressive Gateway of India.

While shorter than the Gateway of India in Delhi, Mumbai’s gate is just as imposing. It’s a grand colonial arch built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V in 1911. When India became independent in 1947, it was through here that the last British regiment left.

Hordes of people come here, as it is Mumbai’s most popular attraction. If you plan on going to Elephanta Caves, you’d also have to take the ferry from here. Make sure to buy the ferry tickets beforehand, the ticket booths are by the gate just before the security point.

From the Gateway of India, you can also see the very impressive and iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Meet the dabbawala of Mumbai

One of the thousands of dabbawala in Mumbai.

If you’d seen the movie The Lunchbox , or read business stories, you’d have heard of the dabbawala , Mumbai’s famed lunch delivery men.

These thousands of men deliver lunch to 200,000 workers all over the city by foot or bike, making very few mistakes (reportedly only one error for every six million deliveries) and relying only on a system of symbols and colors for the past 125 years to identify which lunchbox is delivered where.

How the dabbawala identify the lunchboxes (dabba).

International newspapers call the dabbawala the world’s best food delivery company; they have met with Prince Charles and Richard Branson, and academics have studied them and their system.

Some of the dabbawala now give management lectures at business schools, too, and they’re also developing an app now for those who want to order their lunch online. Find them clustered at lunch time at Churchgate Station where they collect and sort dabbas (the lunchbox).

Take a look at one of the world’s largest open air laundromats

Dhobi Ghat, the world’s largest open air laundromat.

While there’s nothing much to see here except clothes, it’s very interesting nevertheless to see how a whole community turned washing laundry into a business (and incidentally, a tourist attraction).

At the Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, the famous and one of the biggest open air laundry facilities in the world, there is only one job that thousands of men do: wash clothes. Around 7,000 dhobi (the washers) scrub, flog, or bleach clothes on individual wash pens, dry them on laundry lines, press them, and deliver them to hotels, restaurants, hospitals, clubs, and houses all over the city.

Over 100,000 clothes are reportedly washed in the Dhobi Ghat every day, and while some dhobi now use washing machines and dryers, a vast majority are still washing clothes manually.

The Dhobi Ghat was started in 1890. Get off at the Mahalaxmi station if you’re going there by local train.

Go shopping in the local markets

Have your ears cleaned in Mumbai!

Definitely check out the local markets when you’re in Mumbai. I had no plans on buying anything given how small my luggage was, but I couldn’t resist when I saw how cheap (and how lovely) the local dresses cost.

I bought a beautiful kurta for less than $10, and my friend Leticia from Argentina bought a whole lot more, given how expensive clothes are in Buenos Aires. Check out Crawford Market (local name is Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai) when you have the time. It’s pretty close to the CST.

And while you’re there for shopping, know that the building — a blend of Norman and Flemish architectural styles — was designed by British architect William Emerson while the wall decor outside was designed by Rudyard Kipling’s father, Lockwood Kipling.

You can also check out Fashion Street near Churchgate. It has almost 400 shops offering a variety of trendy and designer clothes, denims, scarves, and other accessories. Remember to bargain, the locals expect it!

Learn about Gandhi’s life at the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum

The Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum

The Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum is a small and unassuming museum dedicated to the life of Mahatma Gandhi. It will only take you 30 minutes or so to check out its collection. It used to be Gandhi’s headquarters from 1917 to 1934, and a place where he made historic decisions.

Do take the time to visit. You will learn a lot about Gandhi’s life in the 3-storey house. My favorite are the scale models on the second floor representing key moments in Gandhi’s life.

Walk around Colaba Causeway

If you love shopping, bargain hunting, people watching, or all of the above, walk the whole length of Colaba Causeway. The street market has everything from clothes and shoes, to fashion accessories, gadgets, furniture, and food. I bought several pairs of earrings here; at 100 rupees a pair (US$1.50), it’s certainly a bargain!

When you get tired, grab a table at either Leopold Cafe or (my preference) Café Mondegar. There are nice wall murals and the food is great.

Mumbai Solo Travel Tips

Unlike my experience in Varanasi , I felt safe in Mumbai. I used local trains, I booked Uber, and I walked around on my own, and I had never been ripped off nor felt unsafe (except when I was attacked once by 4 dogs. It was a good thing I had my water bottle; when a dog came too close, I would douse it with water).

That said, make sure to observe the usual solo travel precautions that you would observe elsewhere. Avoid walking around late at night, don’t walk around wearing expensive jewelry, keep your valuables with you, and make sure the meter of the auto-rickshaws or cabs are turned on.

Here are also some more Mumbai solo travel tips to help make your trip uneventful (safety wise).

Board the ladies-only car on local trains. On all local trains in Mumbai, there are cars devoted to women and children only. They’re located at either ends of the train; use it to keep safe. Avoid taking the train as well from 8am to 11am and 5pm to 8pm. These are peak hours and local trains can get really crowded.

Download Maps.me . While walking around Mumbai is generally safe, make sure to download the city map from Maps.me before you head out. It is invaluable for when you lose your way, just make sure you familiarize yourself with it before using it.

Buy a local SIM card. It’s not easy to buy a SIM card in India so I don’t recommend it if you’re only going there for a few days. If you’re staying over a week though, it can be worth it. Some services need a local SIM, and it’s cheap (US$4 with 1GB of data daily for 21 days). Head to an Airtel office when you arrive, bring your passport, visa, and a passport photo. Expect the process to take at least 1 hour.

I have traveled around India for a total of 5 weeks, and Mumbai is by far the safest place I’ve been to — it’s easy to go around, it’s safe for women, and the locals are pretty friendly. (They thought I was Indian, but spoke to me in English. I asked a local friend about this and she said that India is so big, and they must have thought I came from the north.)

All in all, I enjoyed my time in Mumbai very much, and I can highly recommend it to solo travelers!

Oh wow, I’ve always wanted to go to India but never really had the courage to do so solo (and I can’t find anyone who’s interested in going with me). I was dissuaded by an Indian colleague when I expressed interest and suggested that I go there with a group of friends or when he flies back so I had someone to travel with. You’re so brave to walk around Mumbai by yourself even after your experience with eve teasing!

' src=

Great helpful tips as I would like to visit. The price of the flight was great. I don’t blame you for choosing that over the train. Cool cab sounds really useful too.

' src=

Can I just say that I was holding my breath until you got to the part where you mentioned that you felt safe the entire time (except for the dogs)? I’ve been reading your blogs for quite some time now and I feel this nervousness whenever you write about India. I’m so relieved to know that Mumbai can be a safe place for solo female travelers.

' src=

Great post! Mumbai is full of historical places. And the hotel is from last many years.I have been to Mumbai 2 time. Thanks for the post.Keep sharing.

' src=

Oh, wow! Your post made me want to travel to India right away. I always wanted but I get stopped by my family members and friends saying that traveling solo won’t be a good idea in India. So, I am waiting until now for any of my friends or relatives who is willing and available to go with me which is very inconvenient due to difference in the line of work, budget and all. I really wish I could go though! If that happens, I will go back and read all your posts about India. =)

' src=

I only went to Delhi and Jaipur when I was there, but I wanted to stop in Mumbai. That’d be crazy to see the world’s largest open-air laundromats. I’d love to see them film a Bollywood film too!

' src=

We really want to visit India and we wouldn’t mind staying in the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, love the old colonial style of the building. We’ve seen a documentary about the dabbawala delivery men, it’s an incredible system.

' src=

I have been on and off Mumbai for very very short duration and I haven’t yet experienced all of these. The open air laundromats is something I want to see and photograph. Those trains are a boon. Great pics.

' src=

This is great information for solo travelers, and good to know there are female-only cars on the trains. I would definitely go for the luxury hotel. It looks gorgeous!

' src=

I didn’t know Mumbai was Bombay and is India’s biggest city. I thought Delhi is. Well, then to get a good dose of Indian culture, I will visit Mumbai. Great post.

Fun guide to Mumbai for anyone, solo or not. Thanks for the tip about using a prepaid taxi. The Taj hotel loos gorgeous!

Mumbai was my home for about 3 years when I was working there. It was the first city I lived alone in (until then I have lived with my family) and probably the best city in India as a single girl. You’ve put together a very interesting list of things to do – they’re not very touristy as such but bring out the real character of the city. Places like dhobhi ghat is not something I would’ve thought of telling someone to visit but it sure would be intriguing, I imagine.

' src=

Thank you for this post! Mumbai is at the top of my bucket list, but I didn’t know it was so safe for female solo travelers, you reassured me 😉 I might go there soon!

' src=

Wow! Way cool lunch delivery guys Aleah. Amazing how I never heard of them. But I see their system is pure genius. Maybe I can adopt specific elements and apply to my blog commenting campaign LOL. Like delivering the best way to each blog post I visit and read 😉 Inspired stuff though; that low error rate is eye-popping. Talk about mindfulness! Fab post my friend. Thanks for sharing.

A list of unique things to do in Mumbai solo

Top things to do in Mumbai solo #Mumbai #India #solotravel

Awesome unique things to do in Mumbai solo

What are the top unique things to do in Mumbai solo? What are the best experiences to take back home if you are in Mumbai alone? Want to find out? Read on.

The abode of close to 20 million people and a melting pot of all state cultures, there’s obviously always plenty to do in Mumbai. No two days are the same, each experience intense. If you’ve been here even for a day, you’ll know immediately what I mean.

So, if you’re looking for some cool and unique experiences to take back home with you, or have been here for long already and want to try something new, here’s a list of twelve things I’ve tried solo and enjoyed.

Mumbai is safer and easier with a local guide, and also inexpensive! Here is a curated list .

Take a themed tour

For years I rued over the lack of good walking and Sandeman-like tours in Mumbai, but no more. Several good themed tours have cropped up in the city over the past few years. Priced between $15-40, these tours last from 1 to 3 hours and take you through the narrow and crowded by-lanes of Mumbai where you are otherwise likely to get lost (Not to mention be trampled upon or be suffocated by the crowds). Take a tour through the biggest slum in India at Dharavi . Or walk in the footsteps of Gregory David Roberts—once a wanted man in Australia, who later came to Mumbai and wrote a book, Shantaram.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPR1KCah_J4/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

I went on a few tours with Raconteur   – one to see the insides of the  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus  and one to see the important places in Mumbai from an independence struggle perspective . Both walks were wonderful and worth the time. I unearthed hidden stories behind places I’ve visited a million times but never gave a second thought to. The whole experience was like a curtain lift, giving me fresh insight into a city I have stayed in for nearly two decades. Both were group tours booked through Book My Show. Look out for  Raconteur ‘s schedule and definitely go with them. It is time well spent and an educational walk is good for the mind, body, and soul.

Visit a village within the city

Mumbai has several small villages or wadis within it.  My favourites are Ranwar and Kotachiwadi . While both are gradually being eaten up by the flurry of construction around—thanks to the burgeoning population and general disregard to old things—residents are still attempting to keep what they’ve been handed down, fiercely guarding their legacy and their homes. Occasionally, tours run to take you through them such as this and this .

Go graffiti-spotting

Like all major cities in the world, the hipster culture leaves its mark as colourful graffiti across Mumbai’s streets. They don’t last long and frequently need to be touched upon—blame the relentless dust and the equally relentless Mumbai monsoons—but they make for very interesting photo ops. The best ones are in the streets at Bandra, especially along the narrow lanes of Chapel road. As you walk along, also smile and wave at the old men and women fanning themselves in the verandahs.

Chapel Road connects Mount Carmel Church to Hill Road. A walk from end to end takes about ten minutes along the winding road and you may narrowly miss being run over by honking autos many times. As you walk along, you’ll also see the following in no particular order: tailors, pizza shops, sweet shops, chaat places, groceries, snack shops, second-hand book stores, boys playing gulli cricket, roosters crossing the road, men arguing loudly about a match. More graffiti. Never a dull moment. Many of the graffiti on Chapel Road is by the Bombay Art Project , an urban art project started in 2012 to celebrate Bollywood.

Want to know more about the graffiti in Bandra, read this .

things to do in Mumbai

Eat at a local’s home

What started as home ventures by elderly matrons, have now turned into full-fledged thriving enterprises. I’m talking about a ‘home meal experience’. The Bohri Kitchen and Authenticook are two examples. Choose from a range of cuisine options: Bohri, Mangalorean, Maharashtrian, and Koli cuisines, among others. Partake in a cooking class, if you fancy. Be regaled by stories of the dish and its history, by those who’ve nurtured the recipe in their families for generations. A day well spent, with the heart and stomach bursting.

things to do in Mumbai

Take a rural or nature detour

Increasingly, more and more Mumbaikars are opting to go away to a neighbouring village to see how the other half lives and also to reset their own priorities. Grassroutes offers some such rural experience tours such as village stays, farm work, and indigenous art workshops, making for a very interesting weekend indeed. These are not impoverished and underprivileged folks you will meet, but proud, hardworking, self-sufficient farmers and artists. You might return a whole different person and forsake city life altogether. Who knows?

Alternately, if you want to connect with nature, you could visit Borivali National Park. Established in 1974, Borivali National Park (also called Sanjay Gandhi National Park) is one of the oldest national parks in India . Covering an area of approximately 103 square kilometres (40 square miles), the park is nestled within the city’s urban landscape, making it one of the largest national parks located within a metropolitan area.  SGNP runs frequent nature walks you can partake in. Alternatively, the park has cycles for rent and you can rent one to spend a few hours in utterly peaceful and stunning greenery. Inside the park is also Kanheri Caves , an ancient Buddhist rock-cut cave complex. The caves date back to the 1st century BCE and were used as a Buddhist monastery complex for several centuries. You can either walk to the caves or reach by taking a toy train ride. Here are some insider tips to visit the park and make the most of it.

Watch a movie or a play the local way

Mumbai is the land of Bollywood i.e. Indian Cinema. While walking through the roads of Bandra or Versova, it’ll be unusual if you don’t see a wannabe actor strutting his six-pack abs or an aspiring enchantress twirling her always-done-curls. Thus, entertainment options in Mumbai are aplenty and revolve largely around movie screenings and star-studded shows.

A favourite multi-screen movie theatre of mine is Gaiety Galaxy and watching a movie here is an experience unto itself. Ooh, what can I tell you about Gaiety? It is the last bastion of the original cinema-watching experience. Large posters, rickety fans (both the overhead rotating types and the ones jumping on their seats), big bags of salty popcorn and oily samosa, watery-sugary chai, balcony and stall seating, wolf whistles, and impromptu dances, tickets in black. Gaiety, I hope you never change. These days called G7 Multiplex , watching a movie here, especially a Salman Khan movie—first-day-first-show—is a life-changing experience. Kidding, I am not.

Also, enjoy the theatre scene in Mumbai. Plays are staged at the popular Prithvi, NCPA and St Andrews (Bandra) regularly. Tickets cost INR 300 or $5 upward.

Have dinner differently

On a cruise ship, or a diner which runs on sign language.

AB Celestial : A floating restaurant on the sea, AB Celestial is a ‘luxury yacht’ with 4 levels and a sky deck open rooftop. Imagine the views of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the Mumbai skyline, and the sunset on the sea.  The time slots to enter the yacht are 6-9:30 p.m. and 9:30-1 a.m. There’s a cover charge of INR 2300 or $33 per person to enter which is non-refundable even if you don’t use all the money.  Call to book. Reservations are required.

Mirchi and Mime : This popular restaurant in Powai employs the hearing and speech impaired. Diners are requested to place their orders by mimicking hand gestures associated with a particular food item. The food is pretty amazing too and the service is heartwarming. Costs about INR 700 or $10 per person per meal.

Bombay to Barcelona Cafe i s another one run by street kids that boast great service and good food. The place is also perfect for bibliophiles as their shelves are stocked with a great selection of books. Another one for the bibliophile is Leaping Windows stocked with over 2000 comic books. They also host open mic comedy shows.

I don’t mind eating alone, but if you do, fret not, there’s plenty more on the list.

Sample organic fair trade coffee

solo trip ideas in mumbai

First on my list is Koinonia at Chuim Village in Bandra. The café is tiny, able to seat only around 6 to 8 people at one time. But take-away their freshly roasted coffee and cold brew bottles to savour at home. The cafe also sells some delicious croissants and brownies. And when the jazz comes wafting from the stereo overhead, you’ll definitely be transported from Chuim to Paris . The website .

things to do in Mumbai

Blue Tokai is another locally sourced, organic, fair-trade coffee maker, one of the first to arrive on the local coffee scene. I’ve been a big fan of their coffee and coffee making philosophy from when they started, devouring their website, sampling all of their single estate coffees. Even their vision statement will make you salivate.

Our mission since we started has stayed simple: introduce our customers to the estates we directly buy our great tasting coffee from, roast the beans with care, and make high-quality coffee more accessible through our cafes and our website. The coffee we roast is the coffee we like to drink, and we hope you like it too.

Be warned though, all their cafes are almost always spilling over with people, no matter when you go. Open from 8:00 AM – 11 PM every day. Located at Perry Road.

Taste the local craft beer

Local brews and wine cost $3-$7 a glass, depending on the place and the quality, and yes, it’s far more expensive than in the drinking world abroad. There are some local microbreweries doing interesting artisanal craft beers, and I’ll encourage you to try them. Doolally (In Khar), Drifters , and Brewdog are Mumbai’s very own. They also hold brewing and tasting sessions in their pubs and other fun events. Chug a drink while you knife-paint or fight it out in a trivia contest. A great place to meet other people too.

Attend a drop-in fitness class

Watch the sun rise or set over the sea.

I’ve lived in Mumbai for over a decade and even so, often overlook the grand spectacle of the sea right beside me. But whenever I do spend some time by the sea, it always lifts my spirits up.

Watching the sun rise and set over the sea is a humbling experience. Also, a good time to take some stunning photographs. Popular spots to do some sea watching are: Bandra Reclamation, Bandstand, Carter Road, Haji Ali, and Marine Drive. Plenty of solos loiter around, walking, running, or simply stealing a moment from the city’s mayhem.

The Bandra Worli Sea Link is another not-to-miss sight in Mumbai. Two good places to photograph the sea link for an impressive photo are: Bandstand and Bandra Fort.

Visit an astrologer for a ‘Nadi’ reading

Now, this is a bizarre one, but try it out for the experience.

Nādi Astrology is a form of Dharma astrology practised in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is based on the belief that the past, present and the future lives of all humans have been foreseen by Dharma sages in ancient time and inscribed on palm leaves. Thus, a person’s future can be located amongst these leaves based on the thumb impressions—right for men, left for women. The basic logic in this way of thinking is that all our lives can be boxed into 150 or 200 different types. While it’s disturbing to imagine that human lives follow a recurring and replicable pattern, I’ve also heard of people whose ‘future leaves’ have not been found in the pack. So, you may be one of those lucky ones whose life is unique (a new soul). In such a case, you will also not need to pay the astrologer anything.

I’d visited a nādi astrologer a couple of years ago and was quite blown by some of the things he said. A few can be attributed to intelligently guessing—they ask you some basic questions to start with and tell you it’s to find the right patra —but some he conjectured quite correctly (like telling me my mum’s quite unique first name). The reading itself cost me INR 1000 or $15 (in 2014, it may have increased considerably now) after which the astrologer asked me to invest in a holy ceremony to ward off all the evil things in my life (which were extensive). Ignore that but go for the experience, albeit at your own risk. Website .

  • First, I go to TripAdvisor and check out top things to do, top places, and experiences. I use this to make a rough itinerary.
  • From TripAdvisor I often go to Viator to book day tours. I love their user friendly platform and flexible cancellation policies. Compare their offers with GetYourGuide , which is great too.
  • I book my accommodations in Booking because of their flexibility and that the bookings are easily cancellable. The mobile app is great and the genius discounts are on point.
  • I recommend getting the Priority Pass . It gives you access to airport lounges and has helped me through many long waits. It’s definitely well worth the money.
  • And I am literally always on Skyscanner . I get to see the best airfares, and the airline / third party providers offering them. Try the “From: origin city” to “To: Everywhere” option to ignite your imagination on where to travel to next.

So cool!!! I would love to go and see the graffiti and take a tour of the slums of Darhavari. This is a great list because all of these things are very unique and not normally found on your typical “listicles”

Thank you for reading 🙂

I used to spend a lot of summers in Mumbai as a child and I’m now ashamed to say I have done none of these things! Saved your post for the next time I visit!

Things change so fast in Mumbai, maybe many of the things didn’t even exist then, and may not exist when you come next 🙂

Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex is a clean and well-maintained sea-facing attraction in South Mumbai. Located in one of the sophisticated localities, this Napeansea Road park overlooks many expensive apartments on the street. Every nook and corner of this 20 acres land has now become a powerhouse to keep the heart of Mumbai pumping. For more than 3 decades, this wonderland has served as a recreational site, and sports and fitness complex. Visit here early in the morning to witness the magic of this refuge for the inhabitants of Mumbai.  Also, Mumbaikars do not forget to visit here in the early monsoons to sit on its sea-facing end and seek a delight with the sound of soothing waves. Once, this piece of land was merely a rocky patch of the coastal area of Malabar. What you see today is a gorgeous lush green garden lined up with a total of 600+ coconut trees. With a perfect and well-maintained ambiance, this park is a boon for early morning yoga, jogging, walking, aerobics, and so on. The credit, of course, goes to its active group – the Malabar Hill Citizen Forum, who looks after it as its own child. You can connect with their authorities to be an annual member of the plethora of recreational sports activities that they organize. In addition to pumping the adrenaline of youth with its recreational touch, Priyadarshini Park of Mumbai also serves as an ideal family outing location and a lover’s point. If you are fortunate enough, you may even witness little squirrels accompanying you here for some pleasing views.

Babulnath

Whenever you are visiting Mumbai, Babulnath Shiva temple is a must-visit for inner peace and tranquillity. It is one of the oldest temples in Mumbai, which increases its importance in the eyes of the loyal devotees. Its walls are specially carved with limestone that depicts the Hindu mythology, which travellers find it exciting at the first look. At this temple, the beautiful marble flooring is specially brought down from Rajasthan. Thus, each step you take inside this temple feels royal and enchanting along with the daily devotees you can meet and greet, dressed in Indian attires. So, every moment spent in this temple is blissful with internal peace and devotion. Moreover, you can witness devotees from different corners of the world who love to pay their tribute to Lord Shiva and other idols.Once you enter the holy temple revered by so many Hindus and locals, you can find sculptures and idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Nandi with Kashyap. We would also advise you to buy a basket outside the temple steps before entering. This basket will bring joy, happiness and fulfil all your wishes once you pay your heartfelt worship to Shiva and other lords like Durga Mata and Goddess Parvati at the centre of this temple.  If you have any doubts regarding the same, you can always ask devotees around you or the priest to know how to get the prayer done with the basket that you buy.On the other hand, idols of Goddess Parvati and Durga Mata are respectfully placed in the centre of this temple. What’s even more special about this temple is that around 4 times a day, prayers for Lord Shiva are recited here. This temple gets approximately a lakh devotees for Darshan during the Mahashivratri. The whole scenario is a sight to behold and capture in your hearts to narrate stories about back home.

Some Do's and Don'ts of Solo Travel

  • While it is liberating to not have to check in with people constantly while travelling alone, make sure someone has the numbers of the places you'll be staying at.
  • If you are going to a place where your phone might not get network and you are not sure where you'll stay, get an MTNL/BSNL sim-cars for your phone as most places do catch their signal.
  • When going to a cold place, always carry en extra pair of woollen socks that can also double up as mittens for when your hands start to get cold.
  • Always have some money strapped on your person for if your luggage were to get lost, you can at least get by to a safe location with some money.
  • When backpacking, keep it light as you'll only have to carry the bag like dead weight. Backpacking to colder places is better since you can re-wear the same clothes a few times, without sweating in them and feeling mucky.

The Best Places to Visit in Mumbai in One Day

The Best Things to See in One Day in Mumbai

I consider myself to be a pretty experienced traveler (I’ve been to more than 70 countries solo) but still, I was overwhelmed by Mumbai. I stayed in the city for several days, but I never quite felt like I got the appeal of India’s most populous city, where traditional “tourist attractions” seemed to be few and very far between… without any kind of tourist-friendly public transportation system connecting them. Thus, as I look back at my own two-month India trip, I actually wish I’d spent less time in Mumbai.  In fact, just one day would have been enough, which is why I wanted to help other solo travelers in India by writing this guide to the best places to visit in Mumbai in one day.

solo trip ideas in mumbai

Getting Oriented in Mumbai

Mumbai is a huge city – in fact, I read somewhere that if you took the eight smallest countries in the world and put them together, combined they would still be smaller than Mumbai!  Unfortunately, Mumbai does not have a tourist-friendly public transportation system, so if you have one day in Mumbai it makes sense to concentrate your sightseeing in one area of the city. In my opinion, the best area to focus on for one day is Colaba and its immediate surroundings.

There are a few different peninsulas in Mumbai and Colaba is at the southern tip of one of them. Many of Mumbai’s most famous landmarks are located in this neighborhood, and it has enough things to see and do to keep you busy for a full day, without needing to venture further afield.

That being said, even though the attractions on this itinerary are close together and within comfortable walking distance, Mumbai can be confusing to navigate. Make sure you download an offline Google Map of Mumbai , and it’s even better if you have an Indian SIM card (or an eSim) in your phone.

My one-day Mumbai itinerary assumes that you slept the previous night in Colaba and will be ready to start sightseeing early in the morning on your first (and only) full day in the city. To make this work, you might want to consider one of the following Colaba hotels:

  • Budget – Backpacker Cowies is a budget hostel with a common room, open-air terrace and activities like walking tours and event nights. I stayed here back when it was called Backpacker Panda.
  • Mid-Range – Competitively-priced Ascot Hotel books up early and serves a delicious Indian-style breakfast.
  • Luxury – The waterfront Taj Mahal Tower Mumbai is the most iconic hotel in all of India.
  • Boutique – I can also personally recommend Abode Bombay , an independent boutique hotel in Colaba. However, you should make sure (!) to book one of the higher-end rooms with a window and private bathroom.

So, you’ve spent the night in Colaba and you are ready to spend one day in Mumbai exploring your surroundings?  Let’s get started!

#1 – Sassoon Docks

Visiting the Sassoon Docks Fish Market in Colaba Mumbai in One Day

The Sassoon Docks open daily around 5:00 am, making it the perfect first stop for jet-lagged travelers who aren’t yet on Indian time.  The earlier you arrive the more action you’ll see, as trawlers dock at the pier and begin unloading their catch of the day. On the dock, hundreds of workers, mostly women, peel shellfish and sort through the rest of the bounty.

This isn’t for show – these are real people going about the hard work of getting food onto people’s plates. So, be conscientious and respectful about where you step, who you photograph and how you interact with the people who work here. You may also find that your shoes get a little bit fishy, so consider stopping by before breakfast, then returning to your hotel to rinse the soles of your shoes and fuel up for the rest of your one day in Mumbai.

#2 – Gateway of India

See the Gateway to India with Our One Day in Mumbai Itinerary

From the Sassoon Docks you can follow the Colaba Causeway (a popular shopping street) north to The Gateway of India.  The walk should take about ten minutes, and along the way you’ll pass Leopold Cafe, which was immortalized in the novel Shantaram . Turn towards the water immediately after passing Leopold Cafe to reach the Gateway of India.

This triumphal arch was built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary ten years earlier, and is now considered to be a symbol of independence from British colonial rule. When I visited Mumbai the area immediately around the arch was controlled by security, and you had to queue (one line for women, one line for men) and go through a bag check before you could get up close.

#3 – The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower

Taj Palace Hotel in Colaba, Mumbai, India

If you slept here last night, you’ll already be very familiar with India’s most famous hotel.  Built by the industrialist who founded the Tata Group (visit their tea plantations in the hills of Kerala ). I love the story behind this hotel, which is that Tata built the hotel out of spite, after being refused service at a different, “whites only” luxury hotel. That hotel is no longer around, but the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower is still famous around the world.

I happened to be in Mumbai on the anniversary of the 2008 bombings, and security at the hotel was on high alert. They weren’t letting sightseers into the property, but on most days it’s possible to go into the lobby to see the shops, restaurants and luxurious interior. If you’re staying here, the hotel also offers a daily, guided “Heritage Walk” for guests, where you learn about the history of the property and explore behind the scenes.

Optional: Boat Trip to the Elephanta Caves

Excursion to Elephanta Caves in Mumbai

If you’re already feeling overwhelmed by the crowds (I don’t blame you!), you can escape the hustle and bustle of Mumbai on a boat trip to the Elephanta Caves. You can do it yourself on the public ferries that depart from the dock near the Gateway of India, but if you want to understand what you’re seeing I would recommend joining this affordable guided tour that departs daily around 10:30.

Elephanta is an island located about an hour away from Mumbai.  If it wasn’t so hazy you could see it from the shore, but with the air quality today that is usually unlikely. The main attractions on the island are the remarkable caves, accessed via 100 steps, which were turned into a series of Hindu temples. The stone carvings inside date back more than a thousand years, and are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most travelers spend about an hour and a half to two hours on the island before heading back on the ferry. If you’re up for a walk, you can climb the hill near the temples for panoramic views of the island and distant views of Mumbai (if it’s clear).

If you choose to go out to the Elephant Caves it will impact how many of the other sights on this itinerary you’ll be able to see. Don’t worry about it – whether you go to the islands or stay on the mainland you’ll still get a good overview of Mumbai in just one day with this plan.

#4 – National Gallery of Modern Art and the Jehangir Art Gallery

National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai, India on a One-Day Itinerary

As you walk further northwest from the Gateway of India you begin to leave Colaba and arrive in the district of Kala Ghoda (“Black Horse” – look for the namesake statue). This neighborhood is home to many striking colonial buildings and a handful of the country’s most important art galleries.

Located across the street from one another, the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Jehangir Art Gallery are two places to consider visiting with your one day in Mumbai.  The Jehangir Art Gallery was the first contemporary art museum in the city, and today it is free to enter. The National Gallery of Modern Art has five galleries that display works from their permanent collections as well as temporary exhibits from Indian and international artists.

#5 – Flora Fountain

The Flora Fountain the Fort District of Mumbai, India

Walking a few blocks further north will plant you in the heart of Fort, another historic district in Mumbai. The very first East India Company was situated here, giving the neighborhood its name.

There are quite a few striking colonial facades at the entrance to this area, including the Asiatic Society Library and Saint Thomas’ Cathedral, which is believed to be the oldest British building still standing today.  You’ll want to turn west at Horniman Circle and walk towards the Flora Fountain, shown above. The fountain is named after Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and nature, who can be seen atop the 1864 monument.

Some other travel guides will tell you keep walking north from here to see the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, which was formerly known as the Victoria Terminus. This is definitely a beautiful railway station, but it’s a bit out of the way and the Churchgate Station is nearly as beautiful.

#6 – Churchgate Railway Station

Churchgate Railway Station in Mumbai

Continue walking a few more blocks west until you reach Churchgate Railway Station. This is the southern terminus of Mumbai’s Western Railway Line, which connects the Colaba peninsula to the north part of the city and the suburbs beyond.  Millions of people pass through this station every day, so I recommend you just look at the architecture (inspired by a Swiss chalet) rather than getting lost in the crowds inside.

#7 – Marine Drive

Marine Drive in Mumbai, India

Exploring Mumbai in one day gives you an introduction to the city, but you don’t truly understand the city’s scale until you reach Marine Drive, the waterfront promenade with views for miles (well, technically for just over three kilometers).

As you reach the waterfront you will pass Brabourne Stadium , a popular spot to watch a cricket match. I believe that you can buy tickets online at this site, although no matches are showing at the time of publication (March 2024). One block up the street you’ll also find Natural Ice Cream, the city’s most popular ice cream shop. Strolling along the water just isn’t the same without a fresh mango or coconut ice cream.

If you’re wearing comfortable walking shoes you can follow the pedestrian pathway north to Girgaon Chowpatty, one of the most popular hangout spots for local youths and families. Don’t swim at the beach here – the water is not clean – but do relax and observe local families enjoying their late afternoon.

#8 – Return to Colaba for Dinner

Street Food Vendors in Mumbai, India

I haven’t talked much about food in this guide, so I’ll highlight some local eating options here. Personally, I found that the heat in India meant that after breakfast I wasn’t really hungry again until it was time for an early dinner.

One great option for dinner tonight is joining a Mumbai Street Food Tour , which departs around 5:30 pm from the Churchgate Railway Station. I loved taking street food tours in India because the guides always know which street food vendors are hygienic and safe, and they are able explain all of the ingredients, techniques and cultural references that go into India’s rich cuisine.  On this tour, you will sample at least sixteen different street foods!

If you can’t make it to Churchgate Railway Station for 5:30, I recommend jumping in an Uber, Ola or taxi back to the center of Colaba, where there are lots of good restaurants to choose from.  Some to check out include:

  • Indigo Deli – I had a really good flatbread pizza here, and they also have other international dishes like pasta, risotto and burgers.
  • The Table – Frequently voted as one of the best restaurants in the world, The Table is probably one of the most affordable places to try world-class cuisine. Reserve your table in advance.
  • Koyla Ethnic Cafe – You’re paying for the views at this rooftop restaurant that only opens for dinner as the sun goes down.
  • Ayub’s Restaurant – If you’re on a tight budget this take-out shop serves vegetarian and meat-based wraps, rolls and biryanis to go.

But really, you can walk around the well-lit main streets of Colaba safely in the evening, check out the different restaurants and see which ones have the atmosphere and menu that looks good to you.

After dinner you can relax with a cocktail at one of the classy bars around the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, or you could watch a Bollywood movie at the Regal Cinema, an Art Nouveau landmark, or the more modern Inox Laserplex. You don’t have to speak Hindi to have fun at a Bollywood movie, trust me!

Reflecting on Mumbai in One Day

I promise you, this itinerary for seeing Mumbai in one day is manageable, even for a novice traveler, and it takes you to a great variety of different sights and attractions.

If there’s something specific you want to see outside of the area I’ve described in this post, I would recommend traveling to and from that place in a taxi, Uber or Ola, as the public transportation system really is designed for commuters, not tourists. Some attractions that are further afield include Haji Ali’s Tomb, Malabar Hill and the Dharavi Slums, which were featured in “Slumdog Millionaire” (only go as part of a guided tour ).

I spent two months traveling solo around India, and based on my experiences I narrowed down a list of the 15 best cities to visit in India if it’s your first trip to the country.

I also know that a lot of first-time visitors to India have questions before their trip. I wrote down all of my own India travel questions before left home, and then I answered them when my India trip came to a close.

15 Best Day Trips from Mumbai

Mumbai is a sprawling, monstrous city that seems to be constantly expanding and almost never-ending.

It’s a place of history, culture, and too often, mayhem as well.

While the city is a must-visit place during any trip to India, the size, scale, noise, and pollution of Mumbai can be all too overwhelming, all too quickly.

Luckily, the city does end, and in the surrounding area – outside the urban mass of apartments and suburbs and slums – you can easily escape Mumbai for the day to find some peace and refreshing, clean air along the way.

There are plenty of interesting day trips to make – from exploring ancient Buddhist caves to adventuring into India’s very own wine region.

There are beaches, waterfalls and national parks to discover, amongst much, much more.

Here are our favorite day trips to make from Mumbai.

1. Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves, Mumbai

The Elephanta Caves are a spectacular and intriguing UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s found just a short journey outside of the city center of Mumbai.

The caves are found on Elephanta Island – located in the Mumbai Bay – which was used as an important religious site by Buddhists and then Hindus.

The caves are cut from the rock itself.

Inside the many different, ancient caverns can be found an array of sculptures and inscriptions that depict Hindu epics and deities.

Even today, the caves are a place of worship and pilgrimage for many Hindus in the Mumbai area, and you can expect to experience a colorful display of culture and religion when you visit.

Recommended tour : Half-Day Mumbai Elephanta Caves Tour

Jain Temple, Nashik

Nashik is located a few hours to the northeast of Mumbai and makes for a wonderful day trip away from the city.

This is an area of rolling hills and lush, green valleys.

Importantly, though, Nashik is also India’s premier wine-producing region.

Although many visitors may not be expecting to find fine wine when they visit the country, in Nashik, they are guaranteed to be pleasantly surprised.

Wine production here is a relatively new art form, but already the locals of Nashik are competing with the biggest international players.

There are several wineries to visit, with the most popular being the Sula Winery – is the nation’s largest and most well-known domestic wine producer.

You can call in for tastings and to see the vineyard in action.

Available tour : Nashik: Private Full-Day Wine Tour with Tastings From Mumbai

Murud Janjira fort, Alibaug

Alibaug is found overlooking the ocean to the south of Mumbai.

There are great connections – by road, train or ferry from Mumbai – making this the perfect place to spend the day.

Alibaug is known for its variety of beaches and unique seafront; surrounding the town are many stretches of sand – from black sand beaches to extreme tidal areas.

A favorite tourist spot is the Kolaba Fort, which is built a few kilometers out from the shore; it has long played a historic role in the region.

Spend the day enjoying the sights and lounging on the beaches, but make sure you stay for the sunset before returning to Mumbai, as the sunsets over Alibaug are some of the most beautiful on the coast.

4. Matheran

Matheran Hill Station

Matheran is a small hill station that has become one of Mumbai’s most loved day trips.

Matheran, in stark contrast to Mumbai, has been declared pollution free.

This charming hill station has banned all cars, and being 88 meters above sea level, offers a much-needed respite from the humid, polluted city below.

To get here, you must take the train, as no private vehicles are allowed in the town itself.

There are many other forms of transport inside the town though, from handcarts to rickshaws, but really, the best way to get around is to hike along the spectacular trails that offer dramatic viewpoints out over the surrounding green, landscapes.

5. Kanheri Caves

Kanheri Caves

Just to the north of Mumbai’s center, you can find the historic Kanheri Caves.

Located within the boundaries of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, this is a vast complex of over one hundred caves, many of which have been shaped and carved by hand over centuries into the shape they are today.

The area was originally used by Buddhists – as far back as the 1st century BC – and then Hindu worshippers added their own layers of sculpture and worship to the caves.

A lengthy, rock-hewn staircase leads to the cave entrance, which you will find is impressively pillared and hewn straight from the rock itself.

It’s a mammoth feat of engineering that will leave you bewildered and humbled.

Recommended tour : Kanheri Caves: 5-Hour Excursion from Mumbai

Karnala, India

Karnala is a small area of protected land that’s found extremely close to the city of Mumbai, making it an excellent location to escape the chaos of the city and find some small level of solitude.

Karnala is home to a bird sanctuary, which, although very tiny in area – just a few square kilometers – is full of wildlife and greenery.

There are hundreds of species of bird that flock to Karnala, and many hikers and outdoor lovers are drawn here for the wild beauty too.

The sanctuary is found around the remains of an ancient fort that stands atop a huge pinnacle of rock, making for a dramatic sight.

The fort can be reached along a lovely trail that will take you through the bird sanctuary and to the top of the peak.

7. Pawna Lake

Pawna Lake, India

Pawna Lake is found close to the city of Pune, to the southeast of Mumbai.

It’s an excellent outdoor location, perfect for hiking, strolling, picnicking, or simply relaxing and enjoying the calm, tranquil waters.

Although it’s artificial, you will find it is still very much a beautiful, green and outdoorsy place to visit.

A favorite local hobby in the area is to bring a tent and camp out under the stars, to wake up to the lapping waters in the morning.

It’s definitely a place that’s worth a trip from Mumbai, even if it’s just for the day.

Aga Khan Palace, Pune, Maharashtra, India

Pune is another sprawling city, so if you are looking for a relaxing escape from Mumbai, then this might not be the best place to visit.

If, however, you are looking to experience one of the most fascinating cities in this part of India, then a day trip to Pune is very much worth it.

This is a historic place – home to the world famous Aga Khan Palace, a lavish display of wealth and power that dates back to the 19th century.

It’s also the site of the Gandhi National Memorial, where the great man’s ashes are preserved.

There are plenty of old forts and museums to visit, while there is a real mix of ancient culture and modern India is visible across the city.

9. Lonavala

Lonavala, India

Lonavala is a place that’s really like few others near Mumbai.

This beautiful hill station is almost dream-like, with misty mountains and green rolling hills that stretch for mile upon mile.

If you arrive straight from Mumbai, the clean air and cold climes will shock you as much as the spectacular landscapes do.

There’s plenty to do in the hill station and the surrounding area, from visiting the ancient cave system of Karla to the dramatic peaks and cliffs that can be hiked.

10. Khandala

Khandala

Khandala is another beautiful hill station that’s actually found just a few miles away from Lonavala.

It’s a real favorite for those from the nearby cities who are looking to enjoy a spot of hiking; there are some great walking routes that lead to panoramic viewpoints.

Kashid, India

Kashid is found along the coast to the south of Mumbai.

This beachside town is a great place to spend the day relaxing on white sands and enjoying the sea.

This is a quiet spot – at least in comparison to Mumbai – and there are even a few resorts where you can get food or enjoy a drink, or spend the night if you really want a longer break from Mumbai.

Vasai, India

Vasai is a city to the north of Mumbai, found on the other side of the Vasai River.

The city is full of colonial relics, including the famous Vasai Fort, which was built hundreds of years ago by the Portuguese.

13. Silvassa

Silvassa

Found to the north of Mumbai, Silvassa is a unique city to visit; for years, this was a Portuguese colonial city.

There are still a lot of remnants of Portuguese rule, and a very distinct history waiting to be discovered.

The surrounding area has many natural wonders too, including some incredible waterfalls.

14. Rajmachi

Rajmachi, India

Rajmachi is an old ruined fort that’s found in a breathtaking location atop verdant, green cliffs.

The fort was an important defensive structure against the British when they began their conquest of India, but ultimately, it fell.

It’s now a protected monument and well worth a day trip from Mumbai.

15. Trimbak

Trimbak, India

Trimbak is a fantastically cultural town that’s found away from Mumbai, close to the nearby town of Nashik.

Trimbak is the site of Trimbakeshwar, a Hindu temple that holds an incredibly sacred place in the religion.

It’s very much an important pilgrimage site and held to be very sacred.

As such, the whole town is a culturally vibrant and exciting place to visit.
