Regional Cooperation

Home » Regional Cooperation

Tahiti Cruise Club is one of the proud founder members of she South Pacific Cruise Alliance | SPCA. The first objectives are to attract the ship-owners’ attention and offer a logical navigation zone in the South Pacific region, to reveal the financial visibility of South Pacific itineraries, and demonstrate the variety of guests’ experiences with operational suppliers.

Other aspects are also conditional on this regional cooperation (crew members’ replacement, technical supplies, tax harmonization). A common information platform about each country member’s progress on these matters could notoriously improve our relationship with important cruise lines. In 2011, during the Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, 6 destinations of the South Pacific region formalised the international association. The SPCA’s founder members are American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kingdom of Tonga, the Tahiti Cruise Club and Samoa. Pitcairn Islands in 2014, and Wallis and Futuna in 2019, joined the SPCA.

Since 2013, the South Pacific Tourism Organisation and New Zealand Cruise Association have developed partnerships with SPCA, and participated in the first South Pacific Cruise Forum , held in Tahiti in 2015.

On the occasion of their last Board of Directors (dated October 28th 2020), SPTO has appointed the South Pacific Cruise Alliance to sit on their Board as a private sector representative.

Mr Bud Gilroy, interim Chairman of SPCA, believes that the close collaboration with SPTO and the implemented synergies will help the recovery of the tourism post pandemic, particularly in the remoted countries and territories of the South Pacific region.

South Pacific Cruise Development

  • April 18, 2017

south pacific cruise alliance

The SPTO aims to collaborate with key cruise industry partners, government and private sector members such as SPCA to open up opportunities for existing and new cruise destinations in the Pacific and better coordinate priority areas of marketing and development under the Pacific Cruise Tourism Development Strategy (2015 – 2019), for the benefit of its members.

Said to be the peak mandated body for tourism development and marketing in 16 Pacific Island Countries, the SPTO will work with its Pacific Islands member governments towards creating enabling environments for the further development of cruise tourism industries.

The American Samoa Visitors Bureau said that the Pacific cruise traffic has grown by 43 percent in the last three years and currently generates around US$640 million per year for the region. New Caledonia and Vanuatu lead the charge, making up 78 percent of the total number of cruise visits in the South Pacific.

American Samoa will have three cruise calls in April. The Noordam will be in Pago Pago Harbor on April 16 and both the Emerald and Sea Princess on April 22. While having two ships visit on one day is becoming an annual event in American Samoa, the visit by the Emerald and Sea Princess ships will be a record with over 8,100 passengers and crew.

The latest available figures (2015) show of the 799 calls in the region, New Caledonia had 429, Vanuatu 256 and Fiji 115.

Cruise tourism is described as an emerging industry in other Pacific Island countries like Tonga, where the Vuna Port in Nuku’alofa has recently undergone a multi-million dollar upgrade and is attracting more visiting cruise vessels.

Samoa is gearing towards further improvements to the Apia wharf and French Polynesia plans to build a new cruise port terminal by 2020. Small island states such as Tuvalu and Kiribati, which currently receive one or two visiting cruise ships a year, would benefit from the development of expedition segment of the cruise market, involving smaller cruise ships.

Cruise ships are said to bring a much-needed source of additional employment and income to remote communities by linking travelers to outer islands that are not as easily accessed by air. Further, the cruise tourism sector presents opportunities for greater labor mobility in the Pacific, according to the American Samoa Visitors Bureau.

North Korea tests new 'super-large warhead' and anti-ship missile

North Korea conducts a test launch of a "Pyoljji-1-2" new-type anti-aircraft missile in this photo released Saturday.

North Korea has conducted a test of a “super-large warhead” for its "strategic" cruise missiles as well as a test-firing of a new anti-aircraft missile, state-run media said Saturday, as Pyongyang continues to add new weapons to its growing arsenal.

“Through the test launch, a certain goal was attained,” it added without giving more details.

North Korea uses the term “strategic” to refer to weapons that are intended to carry nuclear warheads.

“Both tests were part of the regular activities of the administration and its affiliated defense science institutes for the rapid development of technologies in various aspects such as tactical and technical performance and operation of new-type weapon systems,” the KCNA report said, adding that they “had nothing to do with” the regional security situation.

Earlier this month, North Korea tested what it said was a new type of intermediate-range solid-fueled ballistic missile loaded with a newly developed hypersonic glide vehicle. While the launches of ballistic missiles have garnered headlines, the nuclear-armed country has also tested a number of new strategic cruise missiles and submarine-launched weapons since the beginning of the year.

Experts say cruise missiles present a unique danger in that they can fly low and maneuver, making them potentially very difficult to intercept by air and missile defenses. Unlike ballistic weapons, North Korea’s cruise missiles are not banned under United Nations sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.

North Korea says it tested ‘super-large’ cruise missile warhead and new anti-aircraft missile

Korean Central News Agency released photos showing at least two missiles being fired off launcher trucks on a runway. The missiles in the image were not identified. State media said North Korea’s missile administration on Friday conducted a ‘power test’ for the warhead designed for the Hwasal-1 Ra-3 strategic cruise missile and a test-launch of the Pyoljji-1-2 anti-aircraft missile.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Saturday it tested a “super-large” cruise missile warhead and a new anti-aircraft missile in a western coastal area as it expands military capabilities in the face of deepening tensions with the United States and South Korea.

North Korean state media said the country’s missile administration on Friday conducted a “power test” for the warhead designed for the Hwasal-1 Ra-3 strategic cruise missile and a test-launch of the Pyoljji-1-2 anti-aircraft missile. It said the tests attained an unspecified “certain goal.”

Photos released by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency showed at least two missiles being fired off launcher trucks at a runway.

North Korea conducted a similar set of tests Feb. 2, but at the time did not specify the names of the cruise missile or the anti-aircraft missile, indicating it was possibly seeing technological progress after testing the same system over weeks.

KCNA insisted Friday’s tests were part of the North’s regular military development activities and had nothing to do with the “surrounding situation.”

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are at their highest in years, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un dialing up his weapons demonstrations, which have included more powerful missiles aimed at the U.S. mainland and U.S. targets in the Pacific. The United States, South Korea and Japan have responded by expanding their combined military training and sharpening their deterrence strategies built around strategic U.S. assets.

Cruise missiles are among a growing collection of North Korean weapons designed to overwhelm regional missile defenses. They supplement the North’s vast lineup of ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles aimed at the continental United States.

Analysts say anti-aircraft missile technology is an area where North Korea could benefit from its deepening military cooperation with Russia , as the two countries align in the face of their separate, intensifying confrontations with the U.S. The United States and South Korea have accused North Korea of providing artillery shells and other equipment to Russia to help extend its warfighting in Ukraine.
