Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee

Rev up a group tour at Bristol Motor Speedway

In Bristol, Tennessee, groups can go on a behind-the-scenes track tour of “The Last Great Colosseum.” Bristol Motor Speedway, a NASCAR short track venue and the third-largest sports venue in America, is known for its very short track and extremely steep banking.

Although the 0.533-mile oval is short in length, the track at Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the most popular with its two pit roads, all-concrete surface and stadium-like seating, earning it its nickname of “The Last Great Colosseum.”

Track tours of the speedway are available daily, except during major speedway and dragway events. Tours begin from Speedway World Gift Shop, located on the first floor of the O. Bruton Smith Building.

On the guided tours, groups can climb the famous high banks of Bristol’s track and even sign it; experience the excitement of Victory Lane; and explore Thunder Valley, the speedway’s drag strip.

The drag strip is famously nicknamed “Thunder Valley” for its location between two mountains, causing thundering acoustics when cars race down the strip.

Every year, the speedway hosts NASCAR events in April and August. The speedway also is home to one of the most famous races in all of NASCAR — the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race. Held every year, the night race is a highly anticipated event for fans all around the country.

Aside from NASCAR, the speedway hosts a variety of events including monster truck races, concerts and car shows.

Group ticket pricing for events is available for 20 or more people, and reservations are required for track tours of seven or more group members.

Maynard, gossar and stickler victorious in 'last lap' for short track u.s. nationals, share this article.

tour bristol motor speedway

On Saturday night, three grassroots racing series convened at Bristol Motor Speedway for the Short Track U.S. Nationals: The Last Lap. Billed as the final outing for the Vores Compact Touring Series, CRA Street Stock Series and Midwest Modifieds Tour to Bristol, the event added two names to the list of Bristol winners.

MAYNARD MAKES A MEMORABLE BRISTOL DEBUT WITH STREET STOCK WIN

It may be ‘The Last Lap,’ but it was a memorable first lap for Austin Maynard.

Maynard scored the victory in the CRA Street Stock Series presented by Chevrolet Performance feature in his first trip to Bristol. It was a rare appearance at a larger track for Maynard, but certainly one he’ll never forget.

“It’s really cool. The only other half-mile, or close to a half-mile, I’ve been to is Nashville,” said Maynard. “To come here and win, last one, is something special, especially to join Brett Hudson and Chuck Barnes on this list.”

Maynard had to hold off none other than Chuck Barnes, Jr. in the closing laps, especially after a restart with 12 laps to go. Coincidentally, Barnes provided a lot of advice that put Maynard on the right track for the win.

“Chuckie has helped me a lot, a lot. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be standing here honestly. He didn’t put in the work, but he told me everything I needed. I never doubted that he’d steer me in the right direction.

“I appreciate him. I knew we could race clean. I knew he was coming, so I had to go.”

Barnes, Jr. finished second, followed by Jeff Lane, Brett Hudson and Heath Helton.

GOSSAR COMPLETES THE VORES COMPACT SERIES TRIFECTA

Tom Gossar added a third sword to his collection from Bristol Motor Speedway, scoring the Vores Compact Touring Series powered by Mercer County Electric win at the Short Track U.S. Nationals.

Gossar took the lead with 17 laps to go in the 50-lap event, surviving a battle of attrition while many of his toughest competitors fell by the wayside on the grueling high banks.

“This is the best victory lane there is,” said Gossar. “I definitely didn’t want to see the last [caution]. I knew most of the faster cars had fell out. I was really surprised that the 25 [of Shawn Bowar] had on the restart. I knew once we got clear of him, we had a pretty good shot to keep it.”

While this year’s event is being billed as “The Last Lap,” Gossar acknowledged he didn’t think he’d get another chance to race at Bristol after the 2020 edition of the event.

“I thought maybe when we won the last one, it was going to be the last one. I’d like to end it on a good note.”

Shawn Bowar finished second, followed by Cody Griffith, John Ketron and Karter Stark.

STICKLER ADDS TO RESUME WITH SHORT TRACK U.S. NATIONALS WIN

Cody Stickler has won plenty of big races in his career, such as the Hot Shoe 100 and the Modifieds of Mayhem event at the Snowball Derby. Now, he can add a victory at Bristol to the list after taking the checkered flag in the Midwest Modifieds Tour powered by Wheeler Trucking.

Stickler benefitted from a friendly redraw, setting fast time in qualifying and starting third in the 24-car field. He quickly jumped to the lead and led the rest of the 40 laps for the victory.

“Starting third definitely helped,” said Stickler. “Getting out in that clean air was definitely a good thing. It feels great.”

For Stickler, the Bristol win goes right to the top of his list of accomplishments.

“Man, this one’s right at the top with the Derby. This one feels good.”

Short Track U.S. Nationals Returning for ‘Last Lap’ in 2024

by Zach Evans / RacingAmerica The Short Track U.S. Nationals are returning to Bristol Motor Speedway for one last hurrah.

The 5th Short Track U.S. Nationals: The Last Lap will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Along with the Vores Compact Touring Series, the CRA Street Stock Series and Midwest Modifieds Tour will be part of the event.

The Short Track U.S. Nationals first took place in 2017 and ran until 2020. For all intents and purposes, the event went away as a result of the dirt racing each spring at Bristol Motor Speedway over the past three years, between the NASCAR weekend and other series that took part.

With the Bristol dirt races going away as part of the 2024 schedule, conversations began to bring back the Short Track U.S. Nationals, even if just for one more year.

“It truly is a great day,” said Dan Redmond of the Vores Compact Touring Series. “I think it speaks to the caliber of CRA, Midwest Modifieds, and our series that Bristol wanted us back and wanted to do this one last time.”

“On behalf of Bristol Motor Speedway, we’re excited to have these great partners,” said Bristol Motor Speedway’s Trey Hatcher. “The friendships we’ve built over the last few years, and we wanted to do this one more time.”

This was particularly important for Steve Vore and Dan Redmond of the Vores Compact Touring Series. Many of their competitors were unable to take part in the 2020 version of the event, which took place in September of that year due to COVID regulations.

“[Steve Vore] is such a catalyst in these grassroots efforts across a lot of tracks,” said Hatcher. “Everyone should know without him, a lot of this wouldn’t happen.”

While the Vores Compacts and CRA Street Stocks took part in all five years of the Short Track U.S. Nationals’ original run, the Midwest Modifieds Tour (under a different name) only went to Bristol in 2017 and 2018. That adds to the excitement for those teams to return to “The Last Great Colosseum.”

“We’ve got to thank Dan and Steve for putting their faith in us as Midwest Modifieds, me, Bud [Gray] and all our racers, to do this,” said Brian Nester of the Midwest Modifieds Tour. “This is going to be the last time we get to do this at Bristol. We’re thankful to be a part of it with you guys.”

The CRA Street Stocks will also be take part in the event, a staple among the grassroots racers at the first four editions of the event.

“On behalf of Bob Sargent, Scott Menlen and everyone with Champion Racing Association, I can’t express how happy we are to be a part of this event,” said Greg Wood of Champion Racing Association. “I want to give a huge thanks to Steve Vore for getting the ball rolling on this event. We’re really thrilled to have our Street Stocks back at Bristol again.”

The Short Track U.S. Nationals will be a one-day show on Saturday, April 6. Sunday, April 7 is available as a rain date if necessary. While there will not be on-track activity on Friday, April 5, the speedway will be open for optional hauler parking, technical inspections and tire mounting.

However, everyone involved hopes to make it a special weekend as part of the “Last Lap” at Bristol.

“Michael Waltrip Brewery in Bristol, Tennessee, we’re going to have a party there before ‘The Last Lap,” said Redmond. “We’ve got several other things beyond Bristol we’re working on for all three series, and I think it’s going to make it a very exciting 2024 for short track drivers in the Midwest.

Teams that register before the early entry deadline will receive a complimentary official event poster, designed and hand-drawn by Joseph Perry of Texas. More information regarding registration will be announced at a later date.

A Packed Road Trip to Bristol, Tennessee

W elcome to Bristol, the surprisingly divided city in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains! Situated between Virginia and Tennessee, Bristol offers a unique shared experience. As the birthplace of country music, you’ll find a darling downtown area filled with neon lights, charming eateries, and a delightful sense of nostalgia. Prepare for a fun-filled road trip to Bristol, Tennessee, as we share what to do in this cool dual state city.

Birthplace of Country Music

In Bristol, country music legends recorded their first songs, including Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Elvis Presley. The  Birthplace of Country Music Museum , located in downtown Bristol is a must-visit attraction and Smithsonian Museum affiliate home to a vast collection of historic recordings, artifacts, and exhibits that celebrate the story of country music’s pioneers.

You will be delighted to learn about how country music emerged in Bristol. Visiting this museum is a unique opportunity to enrich your knowledge of country music history.

Adult tickets are $13, and a small discount is available for students, seniors, and the military.

Make sure to see the murals honoring the “Bristol Sessions” a few blocks away with beautiful images of the legends that made this area famous—Jimmie Rodgers, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and the Carter Family. The 76 songs recorded in 1927 during these ten days, with 19 artists, are where and when country music was born.

Downtown Bristol

If you are a history buff or enjoy strolling down cobblestone streets, visiting downtown Bristol is a must. You will love the unique architecture, specialty shops, fun neon lights, and colorful murals. Enjoy an ice cream or slice of homemade fudge from  Southern Churn Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe .

Need help choosing a flavor? You can’t go wrong with penuche or dark chocolate sea salt.

The historic art-deco 1931  Paramount Bristol , a performing arts center showing movies and hosting concerts, is a must-visit site. The restored theatre (circa the 1990s) has a vintage Mighty Wurlitzer organ. It is one of the few remaining in the country.

Henry Rollins, Joan Osborne, Kathy Mattea, and Oklahoma (the musical) are coming attractions.

Original Burger Bar

One of my favorite places in downtown Bristol is the  Original Burger Bar , a retro stop you won’t want to miss. This nostalgic diner, circa 1942, is excellent for never-frozen burgers, hot dogs, shakes, and 1950s rock & roll.

It is also where singer Hank Williams, Sr., was last seen alive.

I loved the “Your Cheating’ Heart” burger! This award-winning diner is closed Sundays and Mondays.

You’ll also find some amazing meals in nearby Johnson City, TN.

Bristol Motor Speedway

Are you a car racing enthusiast? Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Bristol Motor Speedway , one of the most iconic race tracks in the world. It’s known as “The Last Great Colosseum” and “Thunder Valley,” and has a seating capacity of 162,000 people.

Bristol Motor Speedway was built in 1961 and is known for its unique pit stop and racing formats. You can tour the Speedway and visit the gift shop and museum to learn about racing history. Buy your tickets early, as these races are highly in demand.

Pal’s Sudden Service

Be sure to check out  Pal’s Sudden Service , a local fast-food chain that offers a unique take on classic Americana food. Pal’s Sudden Service has been a popular chain in the region since 1956. It has won many awards for its unique menus, high-quality service, and delicious food.

Try their signature snack, “Frenchie Fries,” or the tasty hot dogs, shakes, and even breakfast items.

Shopping at The Falls and Pinnacle

Are you a shopping enthusiast? Consider visiting The Falls and  The Pinnacle , Bristol’s two largest shopping centers. You can explore over 70+ combined stores (Hibbett Sports, Belk, Bass Pro, etc.) to find the latest fashion trends, home décor items, and more.

The Falls offer a beautiful outdoor area, while the Pinnacle offers open-air shopping. Whether you are looking for designer fashion or gifts for loved ones, you are sure to find everything you need here.

State Street Brewing

No trip to Bristol is complete without visiting  State Street Brewing , known for its delicious, handcrafted beers. You can sample some of State Street’s unique beer blends, including the Bristol Blonde, Euphoria, and Hopnotch. Keep in mind this is on the Virginia side of town.

State Street Brewing also serves light lunch options, like sandwiches, soups, and salads, making it the perfect spot for a casual meal. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Bonus Offerings

If you are a golfer, Clear Creek Golf Course is an 18-hole public course that is fun to play. History lovers should consider a short drive to Rocky Mount State Historic Site in Piney Flats. The property houses a living history museum where guests can step back into 1791 to look at frontier families. There is also a barn and adorable sheep.

End your evening with a nostalgic experience, or one the kids may have yet to experience – a drive-in movie.  Twin City Drive-In Theatre  features two screens to watch new releases back to back. They also have a great concession stand with reasonable prices.

The drive-in converts to a campground during Bristol race weekends.

FYI : If your travels bring you to Bristol the second weekend of September, the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion music festival will be going on, a three-day extravaganza with 150+ artists.

Blackbird Bakery

My very favorite thing in Bristol is Blackbird Bakery . I would put their tempting desserts and pastries up against any bakery around the country—that’s how delicious they are. Blackbird Bakery also has enjoyable coffee, bread, and ice cream.

Try an affogato, the best of both worlds: coffee and ice cream.

If you’re looking for a sweet treat to wrap up your visit to Bristol, stop by the Blackbird Bakery. This locally-owned bakery is known for its delicious variety of pastries, croissants, cakes, and macaroons. You can also try their artisanal coffee, brewed with premium local coffee beans.

Cootie Brown’s

For dinner, how about a classic eatery? Shoney’s is popular in this part of the state, as is Cootie Brown’s , an eclectic restaurant that is sure to please. Cootie Brown’s features tamales, pizza, and even a Sunday brunch.

My top pick is the Jamaican Jerk chicken with black beans & rice and roasted sweet potatoes.

A Road Trip to Bristol: Experience the Appalachian Movement

Bristol, Tennessee, is a fantastic getaway destination to add to your must-visit list. This charming city has something for everyone. Whether you are road-tripping with friends or family, you’ll enjoy this city’s memorable experiences.

Come to Bristol, and you will discover a gem worth revisiting again and again.

Nine past Kansas Speedway winners to compete in NASCAR Cup AdventHealth 400 on Sunday

The starting field for the NASCAR Cup AdventHealth 400 will include nine drivers who have won cup races at Kansas Speedway. That group is led by Denny Hamlin, who won last year’s spring event, giving him a track-record four victories in the first 23 years of the 1.5-mile tri-oval.

Here are the nine active drivers with cup wins at Kansas Speedway who will compete on Sunday.

Denny Hamlin, No. 11 Toyota

Hamlin, 43, became the first four-time winner at Kansas in last year’s May race when he shoved Kyle Larson into the wall with 12 laps remaining in the AdventHealth 400. He’s also won Cup races at Kansas in 2012, 2019 and 2020 for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Hamlin is already locked into this year’s playoffs with a series-best-tying three wins — Bristol, Richmond and Dover last week. Hamlin has 13 top-5 finishes at Kansas. He was second in 2022 to Bubba Wallace and last fall to Tyler Reddick, both 23XI drivers whose cars Hamlin co-owns with Michael Jordan.

Joey Logano, No. 22 Ford

Logano, the 2018 and 2022 cup champion for Team Penske, is one of five drivers to win at least three times at Kansas Speedway, most recently in the fall of 2020. Logano, 33, has 32 career wins, but he is still looking for his first victory of 2024. His best result of the season was second at Richmond. Logano was sixth at Kansas last May and fifth in the fall.

Kyle Busch, No. 8 Chevrolet

Busch, the series champion in 2015 and 2019, has two cup victories at Kansas Speedway, including the spring of 2020 when he swept the cup and trucks races. That gave him nine career victories (two cup, four Xfinity and three trucks) across NASCAR’s three national series at Kansas, most of any driver. After 15 years with Joe Gibbs Racing, he moved to Richard Childress Racing last year and won three races, giving him a record 19 consecutive years with at least one win and 63 career victories, ninth all-time.

Martin Truex Jr., No. 19 Toyota

Truex is the only driver to win twice in one season at Kansas Speedway when he swept both races in 2017 en route to the cup championship. Truex, 43, is still seeking his first win of the season but is second in the points standings on the strength of six top-10 finishes, including a second at Bristol and third last week at Dover for Joe Gibbs Racing. Truex had been in the top 10 in eight straight starts at Kansas until a crash took him out on the third lap of last fall’s race.

Brad Keselowski, No. 6 Ford

Keselowski, the 2012 cup champion, is in his second season as a co-owner/driver for RFK Racing. Keselowski owns 35 career cup wins, ranking 24th all-time, including victories at Kansas in 2011 and 2019. But Keselowski, 40, has yet to win in his last 108 starts, though he came close last month with second-place finishes at Fort Worth and Talladega. Keselowski has seven top-5 and 14 top-10 finishes in 28 career starts at Kansas, including ninth last fall.

Bubba Wallace, No. 23 Toyota

Wallace won the 2022 Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway for his second career victory for 23XI Racing, co-owned by basketball legend Michael Jordan and Hamlin. Wallace, 30, has yet to win since then but was fourth in the spring race at Kansas last year and third last fall at Fort Worth, a similar 1.5-mile track. This year, Wallace has posted four Top 10 finishes, including a season-best fourth at Martinsville and fifth-place finishes at Daytona and Atlanta.

Jimmie Johnson, No. 84 Toyota

Johnson, the seven-time cup champion, retired from full-time racing after the 2020 season but is competing in nine events this year for Legacy Motor Club, the team for which he is a co-owner. Johnson, 48, won at Kansas in 2008, 2011 and 2015. Johnson, who was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in January, has 83 career wins, tied for fifth all-time with Cale Yarborough. He finished 27th last week at Dover.

Chase Elliott, No. 9 Chevrolet

Elliott, the 2020 cup champion, won the fall race at Kansas in 2018. Elliott has two second-place finishes at Kansas and 10 top-10 finishes in 16 starts for Hendrick Motorsports. Elliott, 28, snapped a 42-race winless streak last month by winning at Texas, a similar layout to Kansas Speedway. Elliott, son of Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, has been selected as the series’ Most Popular Driver six times, a title his father won 16 times. Former Kansas football player TJ Semke from Lee’s Summit, is the jackman for Elliott’s team.

Tyler Reddick, No. 45 Toyota

Reddick is the most recent winner at Kansas Speedway, taking the checkered flag in an overtime finish in last fall’s Hollywood Casino 400 for 23XI Racing. Reddick, 29, clinched a postseason spot by winning last month at Talladega for his sixth career victory. In 10 starts at Kansas, he has four top-10 finishes, including ninth in last May’s event.
