The Titleist Tour Soft golf ball is a solid option if you’re not set on a urethane-covered ball. Soft, low compression feel and excellent distance.

Introduction

When you think of Titleist, “Twitter war” is not the first thing that comes to mind, but that’s just what the company got thanks to their new Tour Soft ad campaign. By calling out Callaway’s Chrome Soft , TaylorMade’s TP5 , and Bridgestone’s Tour B RXS , Titleist brought down a wave of criticism about comparing apples to oranges.

Leaving all that aside, we grabbed a box of the new Tour Soft to see for ourselves if the performance lives up to the hype.

Off the putter, the Titleist Tour Soft lives up to its name. I found it to be softer than the ProV1. Where the ProV1 produces a mid-pitch “tock” at impact, the Tour Soft’s sound is lower pitch, hence the softer feel. All that said, the difference is slight and might not be noticeable during a round.

In comparing it to the other balls that Titleist calls out, I would rate the Tour Soft as similar to the TP5 but firmer than the Chrome Soft or the Tour B RXS.

Launch monitor testing and on-course play showed that the Tour Soft stands up well in comparison to premium golf balls. One of our staffers normally plays a Chrome Soft and felt that the Tour Soft was equally long on the course, though he added that his comparison came during a stretch of very good ball striking.

Driver spin was extremely consistent with the Titleist Tour Soft. While not the lowest spinning ball off the tee, only the very worst strikes produced spin outside of a 200 RPM range.

With the irons, the story was similar. The Tour Soft produced average spin numbers but was very consistent.

The short game is where non-urethane covered balls tend to fail in comparison to tour balls, and that was largely true for the Tour Soft.

On full swing wedge shots, the Tour Soft was fairly close to the ProV1 and other urethane-covered balls. As I backed down to shots of 60 yards and less, the gap grew dramatically. Urethane covered balls like the ProV1 spun about 20% more on those half-wedge swings .

If maximizing short game spin is a priority, you should stick with a urethane-covered golf ball. That said, the Tour Soft is very good in the short game compared to other non-urethane balls.

The Titleist Tour Soft is a good, soft-feeling golf ball, but it isn’t a category-buster. If you want top-end performance in your short game, you still need urethane. However, for the vast majority of golfers for whom durability and value are more important, the Tour Soft is a solid choice.

Did anyone else read most of this review with Jim Nantz’s voice in their head or was that just me?

Jim Nance, now that is funny. Old Sugar Puss hisself. Anyway with all the science involved in make clubs and balls I am sure that what is being done in weight and hardness of the Ball it will all be better. The tour and tour quality players still go for the, what they call heavy and strong stuff and the hard Ball, but that is changing with the new generations. You see for example more and More Graphite Irons as the kids that grew up with it continue to use what they are used to. So, lighter clubs and softer Balls will only get better and better,,,,,,,,,,,,,

It’s a 2-piece ball, like a range ball, and twice the price of the average 2-piece.

I get a lot out of Mr. Saternus’ reviews – he is an accomplished golfer who can actually produce the swings necessary to test ball performance, making his review worthwhile. And it confirms what is known about the difference between urethane and non-urethane balls and about modern golf balls in general. That is, they are all long and straight off the tee, and really differentiate only on scoring shots of what, 150 and in, maybe a little less. But to say that the Tour Soft is nothing more than a range ball is stupid. Titleist opened the door to comparison of its new 2-piece ball to urethane covered balls and the results generally show what would be expected for many golfers. I would bet however that the Tour Soft would fare very well against plastic covered 3-piece balls or any non-urethane ball especially in overall feel and playability. It would be interesting to compare it with Callaway Supersoft, Superhot, Diablo Tour, Srixon Q-Star etc. and if some Bridgestone e5’s are laying around (2-piece urethane) those too. But in general, just as Dean Snell and Frank Simonutti (Wilson) have said, everything is long and straight nowadays and will be 5 yards between one another on robot tests with long shots. Those experts say that balls differentiate only on high spin scoring shots and it is an open debate whether most golfers are really benefitted by high spin around the greens. So buy a ball that fits your budget and the feel /spin you prefer. Anyway this was a nice succinct review of a solid new offering by Titleist.

Have been playing tour soft for a few weeks now. All I can say is WOW! I am an unabashed Duffer my skill level is closer to Dorff than Arnie and I can honestly say that these balls are extraordinarily forgiving. All of a sudden I am deadly with my gap wedge weather 40 or 120 out, my 60 degree suddenly flops like Phil and I have mysteriously learned how to putt. I haven’t really messed with my swing ( I am nowhere near pure) and my handicap has dropped a few in a few weeks. Just for S and Gs I tried going through a few other balls in my bag along with my tour soft today and found a clear difference ( Q Star, Chrome, TaylorMade distance). It wasn’t the golfer it was definitely the ball. It may just be a case of matching a ball with my club head speed or by some miracle or extensive prayers from my church my golf game has improved that much but, it seems to correlate too tight to the ball change. Heck even my drives got an extra 15-20 on it and they ain’t slicing like they used to. Just my personal experience not an endorsement for anybody else’s game but, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to try a sleeve or two. Playing Taylor RocketBladez and RBZ driver my driver swing speed on the simulator is popping up in the 90s I guess it’s okay for an old fat guy.

I played these one round and the ball definitely flies far and straight and feels great ! I was skeptical of a 2 piece non urethane ball The check up around the green was not great but everything else is outstanding Price is ok but not great since you can Get Srixon Z stars on sale $30 usually.

I have also been playing these for a couple of weeks. I am loving this ball. They do go far off the driver and have a very nice feel to them. I have been playing the true soft but these Tour soft have a nicer feel to them. My control is enhanced. I use hybrids to arc the balls up in the air and I am not real concerned with spin of the wedges either. This enhanced control, touch and feel call it what you will is a different world with this ball. I have also played the Chrome soft and I like this Titleist Tour Soft much better. They got this one right.

Played the Tour Soft past weekend. I’m 62 and a 12 h. Distance and flight path were fine but 135 yards on in I could NOT get the ball to check up. Some were really high flying 8 iron shots that would hit and roll. It’s too bad because the ball feels great of the club face. I usually play Wilson Professional or Vice Pro Soft which hit , spin and roll about a foot. Don’t waste your money on the Tour Softs. Much better balls out there for less $

Titleist Tour Soft, TruFeel balls: what you need to know

What you need to know: Although known for it’s tour-level Pro V1/V1x line, Titleist knows there are players seeking golf balls that perform more than good enough without costing you the equivalent of a filet mignon dinner per dozen. That’s where the Tour Soft and TruFeel models come in. The Tour Soft provides golfers with more distance off the tee and increased spin into the green. All while providing a soft feel off the face. The TruFeel has a revamped core, cover and aerodynamics package to deliver more yards with the ability to play a variety of greenside shots.

Price/Availability: The Tour Soft balls will be offered in white, yellow and green and be available in golf shops on Jan. 24. The ball will be available in pink in July 2024. | Price is $40 per dozen. The TruFeel balls (White) will be available in golf shops on Jan. 24,. Yellow TruFeel will be available on March 1 with Matte Red available on May 15. Price is $25 per dozen.

1. Help on all the shots. Instead of focusing solely on distance, Titleist set out to create a better ball that addresses all the shots but at a lower price point.

“There are golfers that say ‘I’m not paying that much for a [premium] golf ball.’ ” says Matt Hogge, product development director for Titleist golf balls. “But they do not have to sacrifice quality. There will be modest performance tradeoffs, but we will not scrimp on quality.”

“Tour Soft features a new, large core that increases ball speed and distance off the tee while providing a soft feel. The 1.608-inch diameter of Tour Soft’s core makes it the largest ionomer-covered core in the market. Over Tour Soft’s core is a thin “FusaBlend” cover which has been reformulated to increase spin and control into and around the greens. Fusablend is a Titleist proprietary combination of ionomers and softening polymers used to create a cover material with spin performance and feel typically not found with other ionomer covers.

2. Core of the matter. Any ball engineer will tell you that the core of the ball is the fastest part and the cover is the slowest. As such, Titleist set out to design a ball with a very large core, which presents manufacturing challenges.

“Manufacturing a 1.608-inch core is not an easy task, but the advantages it delivers to golfers in on-course performance is tremendous,” said Mike Madson, VP of golf-ball R&D for Titleist said. “We’re only able to produce a core that large because of our manufacturing expertise. We have total control over all our processes, which allows us to make the advancements needed to create a core at that size that performs the same from ball to ball and dozen to dozen.”

3. Feel is king. For the TruFeel model, the emphasis was on creating a ball that behaves better around the greens—and feels better, too—without sacrificing yards.

Key to achieving that is a thicker, softer 3.0 TruFlex cover that is designed to increase greenside spin, while working in concert with a new, reformulated core to provide long distance with Titleist’s softest feel. A new aerodynamics package is designed to deliver a penetrating, low ball flight that enhances total distance for many.

The latest version of the Titleist Tour Soft was launched in 2022 at a lower price than most other Titleist golf balls. I wanted to see how the ball performed in its category, so I got some from my local pro shop and put it out to the test.

Here’s a quick Titleist Tour Soft Review. The Titleist Tour Soft is an affordable golf ball with a soft feel and decent distance. It’s a 2-piece golf ball ideal for golfers with a medium swing speed. But the Tour Soft has its pros and cons. I could tell right away that this ball is not for everyone – especially advanced golfers.

The Titleist Tour Soft 2024 is softer and lighter than the Pro V1s , which was my first observation of the ball.

I found that it’s a much better alternative to the Pro V1s or any other hard ball for a high or mid-handicap golfer . It travels far, is softer at impact, and is more affordable than the Pro V1s.

It’s got an impressively large and fast core for an aerodynamic flight which I can confirm from my testing.

The ball’s got a good spin, but its non-urethane cover lacks greenside spin and control, which may make it unsuitable for golfers relying on the ball’s shot-shaping abilities.

Overall, the Tour Soft is an excellent value-for-money golf ball for everyday golfers. However, it isn’t a groundbreaking, category-defying ball.

If you prioritize top-end performance in your short game, especially regarding spin and control, urethane-covered balls, like the TaylorMade Tour Response , are a better option. But, for the majority of golfers who value durability and distance, the Tour Soft remains a solid choice.

The Titleist Tour Soft was fun to review, and I came to interesting conclusions.

I must admit, it’s got a great balance of distance, spin, and overall performance. However, the impact on my driver wasn’t as soft as I expected.

If you’re looking for a soft feel ball, I recommend you check out the Callaway Super Soft. But, if distance is also your priority, the Tour Soft delivers.

Off the tee, the Tour Soft delivered impressive results with low spin, resulting in longer and straighter flights.

This ball is also much cheaper than other balls produced by Titleist. It’s also extremely durable and long-lasting because I played a few rounds with it, and it still felt new.

So, for golfers prioritizing soft feel and distance gains, this might be the ideal ball. But utilizing different spin-based shots, like a backspin or a side-spin, and achieving maximum control around the greens may be more challenging.

Below is a detailed review of the features of the Titleist Tour Soft Golf Ball.

The Tour Soft features a large and fast core with a 1.6” diameter. It provides an incredibly soft feel when struck.

Additionally, the improved aerodynamics of the core delivers maximum responsiveness and impressive distance gains.

So, you can expect to see your ball travel a few extra yards off the tee when using the Titleist Tour Soft.

The Tour Soft golf ball has 346 quadrilateral dimples. The 346 Quadrilateral dipyramid dimple design allows the ball to travel in a straighter line to improve shot consistency.

Additionally, the dimples also contribute to tighter shot dispersion. So, your ball is more likely to stay on its intended path when you hit it.

This is particularly useful for beginners as it’ll be easier to predict where your shots will land.

The Tour Soft requires a thinner cover due to the larger size of the core. So, Titleist especially developed the 4CE Grafted Fusablend® Cover that provides better greenside grab than other non-urethane cover balls.

Tour Soft Performance Review

Below, I’ve discussed the golf balls’ distance, spin, feel, and longevity.

The Titleist Tour Soft has a soft impact feel but is not the softest option. I found it to be significantly softer during my review than the Pro V1, which didn’t surprise me.

In comparison, balls like the Callaway Super Soft provide a softer feel.

Off the tee, the Tour Soft provides impressive distance and carry. It plays quite long, and the larger core prevents energy losses even on faster swings.

I was particularly impressed by its consistent mid-height ball flights. In comparison, balls like the Taylormade Soft Response ball sometimes lose momentum mid-air and fall short of their intended target.

However, with the Titleist Tour Soft, there are no such issues. The ball maintains its trajectory and distance consistently.

Here’s a breakdown of the spin of the Tour Soft golf ball on different types of shots.

Driver Spin— The Tour Soft provides a remarkably consistent spin off the driver. Its low spin on tee shots allows the ball to travel straight and long.
Iron Spin— The Tour Soft spins moderately with irons while maintaining consistency.
Short Game Spin— Unfortunately, like all other non-urethane balls, the Tour Soft lacks the green-side control of high-performance tour balls. Since urethane-covered balls tend to spin approximately 20% more on short-game shots, they provide more shot-shaping abilities and control, making it easier to sink putts. In this regard, the TaylorMade Tour Response is a better option.

Overall, the Tour Soft provides good spin consistency and control, making it suitable for most golfers’ needs. However, golfers who enjoy a spin shot on the green may find the Tour Soft golf ball lacking.

The Titleist Tour Soft has a low compression rating of 67, which makes it extremely forgiving on off-center strikes.

The low compression makes it easier for the ball to compress on impact, reducing the energy lost and providing a larger sweet spot.

The Tour Soft has been designed in response to golfer feedback and has the same aerodynamic package as the second-generation Tour Speed , but the Soft’s unique construction means it will fly lower than the three-piece Speed.

At 1.600”, the Tour Soft retains one of the largest core sizes in the Titleist golf ball range and the same soft compression as the previous generation.

Such a large core requires an extremely thin cover, and Titleist developed the thin 4CE grafted cover which helps generate reliable greenside spin for short game playability. It also uses a new aerodynamic 346 quadrilateral dipyramid dimple design for a penetrating ball flight and longer distance.

A clever alignment aid on the side of the ball helps you to square the putter as well as ensuring it’s correctly targeted for your chosen line.

“Just like any of our golf ball products, we are always looking for a dimple pattern that is specific to each model and works best for that design,” said Michael Madson, Senior Director, Research and Engineering. “In the new Tour Soft, we saw an opportunity to improve upon the aerodynamics and improve upon the longer distance players were seeking.”

According to Madson, the 346 quadrilateral dipyramid dimple design was not on the original radar for the new Tour Soft golf ball.

“Our team developed many designs and considered a number of options from a research standpoint, but it wasn’t until the Tour Speed golf ball when we tested and determined the quadrilateral dipyramid dimple pattern made for a really efficient way to process an injection moulded cover,” he told us.

“We never planned to put the same pattern on the Tour Soft, and we looked at a multitude of other dimple counts and patterns within the same family that might work better. But when it came to optomised ball flight and total performance, the 346 quadrilateral dipyramid pattern was clearly the best.”

At £2.66 per ball, this is a good option for club golfers. It’s impressively long off the tee and we are big fans of the updated T-shaped sidestamp which makes it really easy to align on both the tee and green.

It’s a durable ball, too, which is massive for club golfers, but spin levels are definitely lower than some of its competitors and the higher-priced and urethane-covered balls.

Overall it’s definitely a model we’d put in the bag if you’re looking for a ball that provides a long, stable flight, a soft feel and decent control around the greens.

The new Chrome Tour lineup features a core formulation that helps get more ball speed and distance from each shot. When I used these golf balls, I could tell that they were shooting off the face of the club with each shot.

Although you may not notice this every time, the ball’s flight was consistent on each shot. To test this, I used a robot tester to achieve a consistent swing speed and pattern each time.

Depending on what model you hit, you may see more or less spin rates on the ball, depending on your preference for what works for you.

High-Performance Tour Urethane Cover

Chrome Tour golf balls have a reformulated urethane cover on the outside of the ball that helps add a new level of spin on short-game shots. By using a slightly softer cover, you will notice that the ball does have a softer feel off the face of the club.

The Chrome Soft is a 3-piece construction with a 75-compression scale rating. This golf ball will suit mid-handicap golfers who benefit from a higher ball flight and may not have the swing speed or skills to maximize the benefits of the other two correctly.

With the new Hyper Fast Soft Core, the Chrome Soft offers much higher ball speeds than its predecessor. It also is the lowest-spinning option of the three, which will benefit those looking for maximum distance.
