small group tours of japan 2023

Japan tour specialist with small groups, great guides and cultural immersion

Escorted tours.

Our small group Japan tour escorted groups (maximum of 8 to 12 tour members depending on the itinerary) allow us to stay in smaller ryokans and hotels, use public transportation and eat in smaller, intimate restaurants.

For those of you who wish to travel independently, these packages offer the perfect way to explore Japan. A little structure with a lot of flexibility may be the perfect combination for you!

Cherry Blossom Tours

Late March/early April in Japan means beautiful weather and cherry blossoms are on their way. We have many itineraries that take full advantage of this beautiful season.

Our specialty tours are small escorted group tours that include the same travel style as our popular escorted tour packages. But they have a unique focus and a one of a kind itinerary with one of a kind experiences.

Private Group Tours

Our Group Travel Services can provide you and your group with whatever you will need while visiting Japan.

Our small group tours are  well-balanced, educational, culturally-broadening, and most importantly, fun tours that inspire and inform.  By breaking down as many barriers as possible to the lifestyle, customs and traditions of Japan and the Japanese, our tour members travel as “ Temporary Japanese” allowing the maximum possible cultural exposure and experience.

Japan Treasures: Best Small Group Tour, 2023 & 2024

Japan group tour for a week.

  • A carefully planned one-week tour lets you see the best that Japan has to offer.
  • Get a taste of Japanese culture, tradition, and cuisine at these top destinations.
  • English-speaking guide.
  • Four-star hotels in the downtown area for a very comfortable stay
  • Very reasonable price for first-time visitors.
  • Small group or a private tour of the best of Japan.
  • Customizable to highlight the beauty of Japanese cherry blossoms or fall foliage.

A visit to Japan can easily lead to addiction. Even if it is the first time you visit the local area, you will never get bored even for a week in a row. Many tourists, however, if they only have a week of vacation time, will enter the country in Osaka and go straight to Kyoto. Nara is also nearby if you would like to take a one-day round-trip tour. On the last day, go shopping in Osaka and visit Osaka Castle and other attractions. Here's what our Japanese local travel experts recommend - a 7-day small-group tour to discover the treasures of Japan.

What You'll Get

On our 7-day small group tour, you can discover Japan's diverse and rich natural beauty. Learn about the unique culture and long history of Japan during a short stay. Additionally, you can see the politeness, craftsmanship, and professionalism of Japanese people, as well as good law and order.

Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo 7-Day Group Tour Map

Small group tour itinerary, day 1: arrival - osaka.

Welcome to Japan! When you arrive at Kansai International Airport, our staff will greet you and assist you in boarding the chartered transport to your hotel. Upon arrival at your hotel and after a short rest, we will take you to Osaka's vibrant, colorful downtown district, the Dotonbori area. Here you can sample a wide variety of delicious Japanese cuisine. We will serve you a welcome dinner at the 'Kitchen of Japan,' in Osaka. After a hearty dinner and a walk, we will take you to your hotel for a good night's rest.

Accommodation : Hotel Integrate Osaka Umeda 4* or similar

Meals : Dinner

Day 2: Osaka - Kyoto

Today you'll meet your friends from other parts of the world to start our Japan small group tour for a week.

Our first stop today is the impressive symbol of Osaka - the Osaka Castle, which was struck by lightning back in 1665. Throughout its history, the castle has been rebuilt and modernized. It now has an elevator on the top floor, which makes it easy to access it. From the observation deck, one can admire the surroundings in a picturesque manner.

Your tour of Osaka will include the Castle and Nishinomaru Garden, as well as Shittenoji Temple, Japan's oldest temple. Japan is an interesting country that combines old and new in an interesting way. As you discover the traditional sights of Osaka, you'll climb the Umeda Sky Building - an outstanding example of contemporary architecture. You can view the beautiful skyline of Osaka from its floating observatory.

In the afternoon, we will transfer to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, where we will visit various Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, and many other traditional sites.

Accommodation : Hotel Keihan Kyoto Ekiminami 4* or similar

Meals : Breakfast

Day 3:  Kyoto

Today, you will visit the Temple of the Golden Pavillion, one of Kyoto's most famous landmarks. It is also known as the Kinkakuji Golden Pavilion.

You will then visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, a Shinto shrine. In front of the shrine are a thousand crimson shrine gates reminiscent of scenes from "Memories of a Geisha." For lunch, we will eat Buddhist cuisine, known as 'shojin ryori' in Japanese. The next stop is Kiyomizudera, a Buddhist temple with a wooden observation deck offering stunning views of Kyoto. Take a stroll through the temple grounds and quaint streets of the area to get a feel for the traditional, historical charm of Japan.

We finish this day in Gion, in downtown Kyoto, one of the most widely recognized geisha districts in the country.

Meals : Breakfast and lunch

Day 4: Nara

We are spending this day in Nara, the capital of Japan during the 8th century. Nara is only a short train ride away from Kyoto. We begin our visit at Todaiji, a large Buddhist temple complex. In its Great Buddha Hall, you will find the world's largest bronze statue of Buddha. After Todaiji, we will take a stroll in a meticulously designed and maintained Isuien Garden.

Nara Park is an essential part of any visit to Nara. As you walk through the park, you can feed the many friendly deer roaming freely, and also add more Japanese photographs to your growing collection. We will return to Kyoto after visiting the Kasuga Taisha Shinto shrine.

Meals : Breakfast

Day 5: Kyoto and Tokyo

You will set out on a scenic cycling tour around Kyoto's Arashiyama area, where you can marvel at bamboo forest groves, on your last morning in Kyoto. The Arashiyama Mountains (Storm Mountains) are known for their ancient bamboo groves. Kyoto's historic heart is a UNESCO heritage site for its scenic beauty, allowing visitors to enjoy the city in a distinct manner.

Having concluded our visit to Western Japan, we will board the so-called 'shinkansen' bullet train and reach Tokyo in just a little over 2 hours. Upon our arrival at Tokyo Station, we will explore and walk around the fashionable, elegant, and vibrant Ginza area before reaching your hotel for a well-deserved overnight rest.

Accommodation : Dai-chi Hotel Tokyo 4* or similar

Meals : Breakfast and Lunch

Day 6: Tokyo

Experience Tokyo on a one-day tour and explore the city guided by a local expert.

The first stop on the itinerary is the Edo Tokyo Museum and Imperial Palace. These vibrant and diverse locations reflect the country's rich history, culture, and traditions. We will visit the city's old downtown district, Shitamachi, or Asakusa, where ordinary people have lived and traded for centuries. Then, we will take a cruise down the Sumida River, which is certainly one of the most enjoyable ways to see and appreciate Tokyo.

After the cruise, we will visit the Tokyo Tower. At the end of the tour, we will take you to Harajuku and Omotesando so you can experience Japan's funky, colorful, and stylish side. Say " さようなら " (Sayōnara, "Good-bye" in Japanese) to the friends in your small group.

Day 7: Tokyo and departure from Narita International Airport

Depending on your departure time, you may have some free time to go shopping or take a stroll alone.  We will transfer you to the airport in a private vehicle.

Meals: Breakfast

What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 554 REVIEWS

Billy, our guide was wonderful and very informative. Our driver was super and the van was just the right size. The 2 other guests were the best.

The tours was very interesting as it allows me to have a very good idea about Japan. I was able to visit many places such as temple, shrines, castle, Japanese gardens as well as historical places. Additionally, the tour allowed me to have nice experience from Japan such as the good food, Tea ceremony, the rapid train and typical Japanese Hotel. Furthermore, I have discovered through the tour the lovely nature of Japan and learned a lot of information about its history and its tradition.

Absolute;ly loved the tour! Billy was a fantastic guide and very informative about the culture and entertaining.

This was a fantastic way to see Japan. We saw so many sites and we had the opportunity to experience so many things. Learning how to make sushi was not only fun, but it was also a tasty lunch. Billy was a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. Kamata San is definitely a highly skilled bus driver. Learning about the varying cuisines in the different regions of Japan was a delicious lesson to learn.

Great variety of places, unique experiences and entertaining, informative Guide. AJT staff very helpful - good to have personal service.

Japan Tours in 2024 & 2025

Time takes on a whole new meaning in Japan. It appears to stand still in old capital Kyoto, where kimono-clad geishas and Buddhist monks preserve centuries-old traditions; proves its healing powers in Hiroshima; and thrusts humanity far into the future in high-tech Tokyo. But somehow, this clock-stopping combination of ancient shrines, soaring skyscrapers, thousand-year-old Zen temples and super high-speed trains just works – and is a huge part of this island nation’s charm.

Our Japan tour reviews

Japan tour photos from our travellers, japan travel faqs, do i need a visa to visit japan.

Visa requirements may change, for the most up-to-date information we recommend using our Entry Requirements tool . Alternatively, check the Japanese embassy website in your country of departure.

What vaccinations are required for Japan?

Recommended vaccinations include tetanus.

As advice can often change, you can check out our Entry Requirements tool for the most up-to-date details on vaccination requirements.

When’s the best time to visit Japan?

Generally, the best time to visit Japan is in the Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) when temperatures are pleasant and you have significant events like the cherry blossom between March and April and ‘Golden Week’ in April and May.

Summers can be hot and humid, and it tends to rain in much of the country from May to September. This can be a great time to visit the national parks of Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps, however.

If you’re into skiing, then come from December to March, and head north. Expect lots of snow and an array of different festivals at this time too.

What’s the weather like in Japan?

Japan is a fairly large country, so the weather can change depending on where you are within the country. Generally though, Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) see sunny and dry weather, with temperatures floating around the 20°C (68°F) mark. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures reaching highs of 35°C (95°F), and rainfall peaks in June and July.

Winters can be cold, particularly in the northernmost island of Hokkaido. There’s snow here and it can get as cold as -8°C (17.6°F).

Is there tipping in Japan?

Tipping is not practised in Japan. Leaving money at restaurants or in taxis etc will simply cause confusion!

However, at the end of each trip if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is highly appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however, as a guideline USD $5 per person, per day can be used.

What’s internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is fantastic in Japan, and you’ll find free Wi-Fi hotspots in many restaurants, cafes, major train stations, convenience stores, and bars.

Are there ATMs in Japan?

Every Post Office and 7-11 has an ATM machine that accepts Visa, Mastercard, and other debit cards. At times, Maestro, Mastercard, and Cirrus have been problematic at these machines, so please bring a back-up card.

Credit cards should not be relied upon for purchases as they are not widely accepted, except in some restaurants and department stores. Check with your bank to see how much you may be charged for withdrawals — consider bringing cash in USD, Euros, or GBP too.

As currency exchange rates can fluctuate often, we ask that you refer to www.xe.com for daily exchange rates.

Is Japan LGBTQ+-friendly?

Japan is relatively progressive when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, though it’s a relatively conservative country, so public displays of affection should be avoided. Outside of queer venues and certain areas of cities, LGBTQ+ people tend to be somewhat under the radar.

As part of their commitment, all CEOs receive LGBTQ+ inclusion training so every traveller feels respected and welcomed on all of our tours. We commit to making our tours a safe and inclusive place for people to express their authentic selves without judgement, free from any discriminatory language or harassment.

While travelling with G Adventures, all travellers must treat each other with dignity and respect to create an environment that is positive, safe, and where everyone feels welcome. You can find out more via our LGBTQ+ travel page .

What language do they speak in Japan?

Almost all people in Japan speak Japanese as their first language, with Korean spoken by about 0.5% of the population and Chinese by 0.2%. Amami, Kyukyu, Kikai, and Miyako are also spoken by some across the islands.

Is tap water safe to drink in Japan?

Yes, tap water is safe to drink in Japan. However, water refill stations are uncommon outside of major stations so you may find buying bottles from vending machines easier.

Is Japan safe?

Japan is regarded as being one of the safest countries in the world, and crimes like theft are uncommon, but it always pays to be careful. However, this is an active earthquake and tsunami zone, so take heed of local warnings.

G Adventures takes all reasonable measures to ensure your safety and enjoyment while travelling with us. All of the included activities are properly vetted and regularly checked by us, and we take great care in choosing the right transportation, stays throughout your trip, and guides to lead your tour. However, there are always inherent risks when travelling — you can find out more via our travel safety page .

Day 2 Tokyo

After breakfast, meet your dedicated tour leader and get ready for your first day of sightseeing.

Our first stop visit today is an Inspiring Sight and will be one to remember - witnessing sumo wrestlers at their morning practice! Your guide will explain the history and origins of sumo in Japan, and the rules. The morning practice starts with stretching, warming-up, and a routine of basic sumo movements, and we’ll witness the cool-down.

Next, we’ll visit two very different, but uniquely Japanese neighbourhoods, Asakusa and Akihabara.

In a city of such frenetic pace, a stop at the charming Asakusa neighbourhood is a refreshing taste of older Tokyo. It’s home to the ancient seventh-century Sensō-ji Temple. Built in the Asuka era, it’s the oldest and most important Buddhist temple in Tokyo – be prepared for crowds! It’s known for its imposing entrance gate, Kaminarimon (also known as ‘Thunder Gate’), with its magnificent red lantern.

The Akihabara area is where you’re mostly to come into contact with Tokyo’s eclectic cosplayers. developed after the Second World War as a centre of the black market and today it’s where all locals and tourists go to purchase electronic goods. It is also a mecca for otaku, or super fans of video games, manga and anime.

Our Welcome Dinner this evening will be onboard the Yakatabune Amitatsu ferry restaurant. We’ll enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine while cruising the Sumida River, passing major sites including Skytree and Rainbow Bridge along the way.

After a memorable meal and lively chat with our new travel companions, we’ll head back to our opulent hotel.

Inspiring Highlights

  • Sumo Wrestling Morning Practise
  • Sensō-ji Temple
  • Sumida River Cruise and Dinner

Day 3 Tokyo

After breakfast, we’ll meet our tour leader for our second day exploring the capital.

Foodies will be in heaven at Tsukiji Outer Market, a shopping district adjacent to the enormous former wholesale fish market. This lively area is home to everything food-related – fresh ingredients, street food vendors, kitchen utensils. There’s great sushi and other restaurants around here, too, but today we’ll be cooking our own lunch during our Inspiring Taste – a traditional Japanese cooking class with an expert local chef.

After lunch, we’ll visit Meiji-jingu, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, who is credited with helping Japan step into modern times after forging relations with international powers. The shrine is surrounded by more than 100,000 trees, all donated and planted by volunteers.

Next, we'll venture into the vibrant neighbourhood of Shibuya, allowing you some time to explore at your leisure the iconic Shibuya Scramble Square.

We’ll then return to the hotel where the rest of the day is at leisure.

  • Tsukiji Outer Market
  • Meiji-jingu

Day 4 Tokyo Hakone (Mt. Fuji)

Today after breakfast and check out, we’ll meet our Tour Leader and set off for Mt. Fuji, a Japanese icon and tour highlight.

It’s about a 2-hour journey via luxury coach to the revered peak, Mount Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This enduring cultural symbol has been considered sacred since ancient times. It’s an imposing sight, standing 3,776 metres high.

We’ll travel to Arakurayama Sengen Park, one of the best places to take photos of the mountain and Mount Fuji 5th Station, about halfway up the mountain at an elevation of 2,300 metres. You’ll savour spectacular views over the Fuji Five Lakes and Hakone National Park.

This evening we’ll be staying in a traditional ryokan near Hakone National Park. Ryuguden overlooks Lake Ashi, and you’ll be able to peek at Mt. Fuji from the spacious Japanese-style rooms.

We’ll enjoy another Inspiring Taste tonight, a traditional kaiseki dinner at your ryokan.

  • Mount Fuji (weather permitting)
  • Arakurayama Sengen Park
  • Hakone National Park
  • Kaiseki-style Dinner

Special Information

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

Mt. Fuji is a must-see, though views may be weather-dependent due to potential clouds and fog.

Day 5 Hakone (Mt. Fuji)

Today you are free to explore Hakone and the surrounding area at leisure. Your Tour Leader is on hand to provide recommendations of what to do in the area. You may also wish to enjoy the stunning onsen at your ryokan.

Your luggage will be sent ahead to Kyoto, ready for your arrival. Please have your belongings ready and pack an overnight bag with your essential items.

Tonight, enjoy another spectacular dinner at your ryokan.

Day 6 Mt. Fuji Kyoto

After breakfast we will be saying farewell to Mount Fuji before departing for Kyoto via the iconic Japanese bullet train.

After arrival in Kyoto, we will visit Kinkaku-ji Temple, otherwise known as the Golden Pavilion. This is a Zen temple and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with two floors covered entirely in thin layers of pure gold. The site is set within a beautiful classical Zen garden. The detailed architecture of Kinkaku-ji incorporates three distinct architectural styles – Shinden, Samurai, and Zen.

Afterwards, stand amongst the soaring stalks of bamboo at Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. It’s green, peaceful and the seemingly endless boughs make for a serene experience, even with the tourist crowds. Take in the sound of rustling bamboo as you stroll these paths – if there’s a bit of wind, the groves will gently sway back and forth which only adds to the magic.

After exploring the sites of Kyoto, we slow the pace down to reflect on the sacred sites we have experienced during an exclusive guided Zen meditation, another Inspiring Sight . Enhance your understanding of Zen meditation in the revered birthplace of Zen Buddhism—Kyoto. Delve into the principles and techniques of meditation within the serene setting of a traditional "machiya" house, where you'll experience both seated and walking meditations firsthand.

After a magical day of sightseeing, we retire to our 5-star hotel in the heart of Kyoto where the rest of the evening will be at leisure.

  • Golden Pavilion
  • Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
  • Guided Zen meditation

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Day 7 Kyoto

We’ll see the sights of ancient Kyoto this morning after breakfast, starting with a matcha tasting.

The picturesque town of Uji is our next destination, and the setting in the famous 11th-century literary masterpiece The Tale of Genji. Uji River and bridge is considered one of the most romantic spots in Kyoto. Part of the Historical Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (alongside Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities), Byodo-in Temple, UNESCO treasure, is the next stop. The temple is best known for its main building, Amida Hall, as depicted on the front of the Japanese 10 yen coin. The temple is surrounded by beautiful gardens which act as an oasis of serenity.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll visit Kyoto’s famed Fushimi Inari Shrine – known throughout the world as the ‘Path of the Red Gates.’ Take time to appreciate the quieter corners of the shrine, and if you’re feeling fit, a walk to the halfway point provides stunning city views.

This afternoon we enjoy another Inspiring Taste – a tea ceremony experience in the heart of Kyoto. The Japanese tea ceremony is a traditional ritual influenced by the principles of Zen Buddhism in which powdered green tea, or matcha, is prepared and served by a host in a quiet setting. Enjoy tasting traditional Japanese confectionery with your green tea.

  • Fushimi Inari Shrine

Day 8 Kyoto

Today is a full free day to spend in Kyoto - if there is anything on your must-see list, today is the day.

This golden city was once the capital of Japan and sits on the island of Honshu. It's famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses. Beautiful Geisha are often found in the Gion district.

Your expert dedicated tour leader will be on hand to assist you with any tours or experiences you are interested in.

Day 9 Kyoto Hiroshima

Today after breakfast and check out, we’ll depart Kyoto and travel by bullet train to Hiroshima.

After check-in and settling into our 5-star hotel, we will meet this evening for dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 10 Hiroshima Miyajima Island Hiroshima

After breakfast, we’ll board a ferry for a short trip to Miyajima, an island known for its forests and ancient temples. Just offshore, there's a 'floating' torii, which becomes partially submerged at high tide. It marks the entrance to the Itsukushima Shrine, which was first built in the 12th century. Nearby, the Museum of History and Folklore has cultural artifacts in a 19th-century merchant's home. We’ll take a walk along Omotesando Shopping Street where we will enjoy lunch before returning to Hiroshima by ferry.

Once we're back in Hiroshima we'll visit the Atomic Bomb Dome, otherwise known as the Genbaku Dome, or the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. A shell of a building that was one of very few left standing after the United States bombed Hiroshima in 1945. In Hiroshima today, locals have mixed feelings about the UNESCO World Heritage-listed structure: some see it as a reminder of war, while others consider it a tribute to the lost that ensures we'll never forget the tragic events that took place here.

The flame in the cenotaph is intended to burn until the last nuclear weapon has been destroyed. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, located in the Peace Memorial Park, is a sobering experience for those who wish to explore further.

We’ll then head back to the hotel where the rest of the evening can be spent as you wish.

  • Miyajima Island
  • Itsukushima Shrine
  • Omotesando Shopping Street
  • Atomic Bomb Dome
  • Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

Visiting Hiroshima can be emotionally challenging as you confront the profound impact of the atomic bombing, but it offers an essential opportunity to reflect on this pivotal moment in history and its lasting lessons.

Day 11 Hiroshima Himeji Castle Osaka

En route to Osaka, we’ll visit the so-called 'White Heron Castle', Himeji – it's the largest surviving example of a traditional Japanese castle. Comprising 83 buildings, the white roof of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed complex is said to evoke the wings of a heron taking flight, hence the popular name Shirasagi-jō (White Heron Castle). This is the most visited castle in Japan and the site offers some wonderful views of surrounding Himeji city.

The rest of the day is yours to spend how you wish.

  • Himeji Castle

Day 12 Osaka

This morning after breakfast, we’ll enjoy a cruise on the Tombori River. This is a fun, 20-minute cruise where we’ll pass nine bridges and learn about famous spots and hidden gems you might like to visit in your free time later this afternoon.

After arriving at the Dōtonbori area, we will have a walk through one of Japan’s typical downtowns. One of Osaka's most popular tourist destinations, this street runs parallel to the Dōtonbori canal and is a hugely popular destination for shopping, street food, bars and entertainment. At night, the streets here are illuminated by hundreds of colourful neon lights and mechanised signs, including the famous running Glico Man sign and the Kani Doraku crab sign

The afternoon can be spent at leisure, maybe exploring the highlights you heard about on the river cruise.

Later this evening we’ll enjoy our farewell dinner and Inspiring Taste at the renowned Table 36 Restaurant, towering 36 floors above Osaka with incredible views and world-class food. Enjoy our last meal as a group.

  https://inspiringvacations-8357211.hs-sites.com/visa-information

You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date. Health, Wellness & Fitness Requirements All travellers need to be in good physical health to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements.

When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully to assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. If we find that you are unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to yourself and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.

Important Information for Customers with Mobility Limitations We want to ensure everyone has a fantastic and inclusive experience on our tours. If you require the use of a mobility aid, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair, please disclose this information at the time of booking.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire group, our tours are designed with a specific itinerary in mind. This may involve moderate walking, uneven terrain, or stairs. While some itinerary adjustments may not be possible, we'll do our best to find alternative solutions within the planned activities whenever possible. Open communication helps us ensure your trip is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.

Information for CPAP Users If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking . Some portions of our itinerary, like overnight cruises or camping trips, may have limited access to power outlets. In such cases, we recommend travelling with portable battery packs.

Certain activities, like overnight journeys on board smaller vessels, may not be suitable for CPAP use due to space limitations or noise concerns. We can discuss these potential limitations upfront and help you make informed decisions about your trip.

Documentation Tour documentation is typically emailed to the lead passenger or your travel agent between 14-30 days before your scheduled departure. This will include your final hotel list.

Arrival And Orientation

Starting Point Your starting hotel may differ from the original itinerary.  Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14-30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list. If you need to book pre-tour accommodation independently, we suggest you do this only once you have received your final hotel list for your tour. If you would like to book something sooner, we recommend that you book using a flexible rate that can be cancelled through your chosen third-party provider without penalty.

Travellers will arrive at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. If arriving before standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm, you are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available as there are no scheduled activities on day 1 of the itinerary.  The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.

Note: if you need to apply for a tourist visa before departure, we recommend using the details of the suggested hotel on the tour itinerary if you wish to fulfil this before the release of your final tour documentation. Please refer to our visa section for more information on whether or not a visa is required for your destination.    Arrival Details Airport transfers are included as part of your package, so long as you are arriving as per the purchased itinerary. If you have purchased an extension, either pre or post-tour, the applicable transfer service will be forfeited from your package and you will need to make your arrangements to the starting hotel.

Where the service remains included, on arrival look out for a representative holding an “Inspiring Vacations” sign after you have collected your baggage and exited customs. If you cannot find them, try to avoid wandering around and instead stay in one place and call the emergency contact number on your documentation.

Where the service has been forfeited due to an early arrival and extended stay, we do offer airport transfers at an additional cost which can be booked via your Traveller Hub.  We recommend you wait until you receive your final documentation to book transfers as your start and end hotels will only be confirmed at this point. Please note that if you are choosing to book an independent airport transfer service, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader cannot be held responsible for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise, nor can they resolve any concerns that you may have with your transfer service.

To make your way to your hotel from the airport, there are various connections by train or limousine bus. The airport information desks can provide helpful advice, too. Most destinations offer ride-share services, such as Uber or Didi.

If you're having any problems finding the hotel, please ring the hotel directly or you can phone our customer support team for on-tour assistance.

Optional Airport Transfers - Transfer Portal Depending on the package purchased, you may have the option to add airport transfers to your booking and you can do so through your Traveller Hub account. We partner with an online marketplace where travellers can compare and select the transfer of their choice. How to book information can be found on our FAQ page or by clicking here .

In addition to Inspiring Vacations standard terms & conditions, any service arranged through our transfer portal service will be subject to third-party terms & conditions found HERE . Refunds may be available with no cancellation fees up to 48 hours before the pick-up time, subject to the terms of the transfer booking.

Inspiring Vacations cannot be held liable for any loss resulting from the transfer service provided by the third-party operator. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure any transfer booked meets the requirements of any other travel arrangements. Likewise, your tour leader or any of our on-ground representatives cannot be held responsible for the service of your third-party transfer nor are they in a position to assist with amending your reservation. Any transfer booking is separate from any other booking with Inspiring Vacations, regardless of whether purchased with regards to the same travel journey.

Welcome Meeting Instructions You are welcome to arrive at any time on Day 1 of your tour and the day is at your leisure. Upon checking in at the hotel, you will receive a letter containing meeting instructions for the following morning. If you do not automatically receive these details, please ask for them. Generally, you must meet at the lobby the following morning (on the day that sightseeing commences) as early as 0815 am local time. Please ensure that you are on time.

In Case of Emergency Although we strive to deliver exceptional holiday experiences, unforeseen circumstances can occasionally arise during travel. If any issues arise during your trip, it's essential to promptly communicate them to your tour leader or local representative. This ensures they can take immediate action to address the problem and mitigate any negative impact on the remainder of your journey.

We understand that there may be instances where your tour leader or local representative is unable to resolve a situation to your satisfaction. In such cases, we encourage you to request that the tour leader or local representative escalate the matter to their direct manager for further assistance.

You also have the option to share details in your online feedback after the tour. However, please keep in mind that it's challenging for us to offer practical assistance once the trip is completed. Therefore, notifying us while still travelling allows us the chance to address the issue in real-time and provide a timely resolution. For general contact details please visit the Contact Us page on our website.

When your final tour documentation is released, this will include an emergency contact for our local travel partner while you are on tour. If this is not included in your documentation, you will receive this on arrival during your welcome meeting.

Your Tour Experience

Tour Pace This tour category is 2 out of 5 Relax and uncover: Enjoy ample free time alongside key sightseeing and activities. Moderate fitness is still recommended to fully experience the trip.

Japanese cities are best explored by foot and public transport, so be prepared for a lot of walking each day you are on tour. Many travellers are surprised by how much distance they end up covering while sightseeing and moving from one city to the next. Bring comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to spend most of the day on your feet. Good general fitness and mobility will play a big part in making your tour more enjoyable.

Group Size  Minimum: 4 people Maximum: 16 people

Escorted Style  This tour is fully escorted by a dedicated tour leader who will accompany you throughout the tour. If your trip includes multiple countries, you will be met by a new tour leader in each country and any internal flights included will be unescorted.

Tour Type  Immerse yourself in ultimate comfort and style with Platinum Vacations: intimate small group tours with exclusive experiences, led by knowledgeable tour leaders, staying in luxurious accommodations and featuring curated sightseeing.

  • Travel insurance (compulsory)
  • Optional activities
  • Personal expenses
  • Anything not mentioned in the itinerary

Optional Tours Depending on the package, you may have the option to pre-book optional tours through your Traveller Hub account. To secure your spot pre-booking these tours in advance is highly recommended. While some tours require a minimum number of participants to operate, you'll be fully refunded if the tour is cancelled at your destination for this reason. Our optional tours are typically led by your tour leader or local guide. Please note that transportation to and from the optional tours is not included, but your tour leader or local guide will be happy to assist you with navigating public transportation options like trains or taxis to reach the starting point.

Travelling in a group Travelling in a group means you will experience both the pleasures and perhaps at times, some of the frustrations of travelling with people you don’t know. The good news is you all have at least one thing in common: a love of travel and exploration. Your fellow travellers will probably come from different parts of the world, and fall into different age groups. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group—patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the overall benefit of the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, please ensure that you respect this request from your tour leader or local guide. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip before departure.

Community Guidelines Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.

Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.

If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.

Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader vs. Local Guide  While both tour leaders and local guides enrich your travel experience, their roles differ. Tour leaders, who often accompany you for the entire trip, handle logistics, ensure smooth sailing of the itinerary, and act as your point of contact for any concerns. They might provide general information about destinations, but in-depth historical or cultural knowledge often comes from local guides. Local guides, frequently native to the area, lead tours at specific sites or attractions, offering a deeper understanding of the local history, art, or way of life.

Due to Japan's popularity, it has been necessary to go outside our traditional route for employing tour leaders. As a result, our passionate, professional and trained Tour Leaders may either be Japanese or long-term foreign residents of Japan.

Coach Transportation The size of your coach will comfortably accommodate your group. There's usually room for some extra seats, ensuring a relaxing journey. Your luggage will be safely stored either underneath the coach or in a dedicated trailer.

While the exact coach style may vary depending on the departure, all our coaches offer comfortable seating. Keep in mind that Wi-Fi and charging outlets might not always be available. To stay connected and avoid dead batteries,  we recommend fully charging your devices beforehand or bringing a portable charger.

For longer journeys, we'll make sure to include ample restroom breaks along the way, so you can freshen up and recharge at your convenience, as facilities are not on-board the coach.

Itinerary Changes  Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience. For example, in Japan, if the cherry blossoms haven't bloomed yet at a planned stop, your leader might take you to a different location known for its vibrant blooms.

This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your trip! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.

Staying Connected If you want to stay connected and access reliable internet while on tour, there are a few options available. It is possible to purchase a virtual sim and we recommend contacting your mobile phone provider for assistance in doing so. You can add a roaming data plan to your existing phone contract is another option, albeit an expensive one. You will need to arrange this before departure. Purchasing a local SIM at the airport in Japan is the final option. For a prepaid fee, you can get data by simply swapping your current SIM with your new Japanese SIM and depending on which package you purchase, you’ll be able to text and make phone calls, just as you would at home.

We also recommend downloading WhatsApp and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential trip information with you, as well as if you choose to add-on transfers to your booking, as your driver may use this to confirm arrangements with you.

Getting Around While touring Japan, you will be travelling to each place by dedicated, private coaches and trains (where included in your selected itinerary), including riding the iconic Shinkansen, or bullet train. Expect some long travel journeys on the coach but rest assured there will be comfort stops along the way where you can freshen up, stretch your legs, use the bathroom and often, purchase refreshments. Generally, lunch stops will be taken at rest stops as they can easily accommodate our large groups.

If you’re arriving in Japan before your tour commencing and exploring on your own, Japanese public transport is world-class and it’s simpler to get around than you may think. While there are many different lines, from regular express trains to underground metros and of course, the famous Shinkansen (bullet train), all are easy to navigate. Most train stations even have platform signage in English and Japanese, as well as symbols denoting regular or bullet trains. When in doubt, consult a staff member – if they don’t speak English, they can point you to someone who does. Alternatively, get familiar with a maps app before your trip (like Google Maps); many provide detailed transport information, right down to the platform trains will depart from.

Hotel Ratings To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don't just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel's typical star rating.

This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.

Accommodation Details In Japan, hotels commonly used for group touring are known as Business hotels. These hotels offer affordable accommodation and although the rooms are typically small, averaging between 15m2 to 20m2, they are clean, well-maintained, and equipped with a private bathroom featuring a toilet, sink, and shower. Some rooms may have a shower over a small bath. Overall, a comfortable place to rest and recharge before a full day of sightseeing.

These hotels generally provide essential amenities like soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, cotton buds, shower caps, and towels. Additionally, most rooms are furnished with a television, air conditioner, hairdryer, empty refrigerator, and a water boiler with complimentary green tea bags. However, it's important to note that not all hotels may offer these amenities, so we recommend travelling with any essentials and creature comforts you deem necessary. If there are any concerns, please speak to the hotel staff.

On every two or three floors of these hotels, you may find a common room with vending machines, and some may have coin-operated washing machines and dryers. There might also be a clothing iron available, but if not, you can request one from the hotel reception, and if available, it will usually be brought directly to your room. It's worth noting that not all hotels provide laundry facilities. Once you receive your documentation (14-30 days before departure), to best prepare yourself, read up on the facilities available at each hotel. If you require a specific need while on tour, such as laundry facilities or money exchange service, speak to Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader who will be able to assist you. The hotels used are conveniently located near convenience stores and transportation options, making it easy to purchase any forgotten essentials, snacks, or on-the-go lunch options.

Generally, these Business hotels offer a buffet-style breakfast with a mix of Japanese and Western food choices. Since you'll be travelling in a foreign country, we encourage you to approach all your dining experiences with an open mind and a sense of adventure, as Western-style dining options may not always be readily available. If you have any specific dietary requirements, please consult your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader to check if your needs can be accommodated. Additionally, we suggest bringing along some of your favourite snacks from home in case the local cuisine may not align with your preferences.

Travel Tip: twin rooms are usually slightly bigger than double rooms in Japan, so if you want a little more space, we suggest requesting a twin room throughout but keep in mind these are subject to availability. We strongly recommend only travelling with one piece of luggage per person due to room sizes and you will be responsible for handling your luggage at all times.

Packing Essentials What you need to pack for your tour will vary according to the trip style you have chosen, the countries you are visiting and when you are travelling. We recommend you pack as lightly as possible, ensuring that you can carry and lift your luggage, and walk with it for short distances or up or down a flight of stairs.

A lockable suitcase with wheels is ideal for this trip. It is recommended that you keep your main luggage weight around 15kg and no more than 20kg. A small or medium-sized backpack (45-50 litres) is another good option. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water, a camera, a jacket, and your essentials while touring during the day.

In Japan, you will need to manage your luggage for the most part. Train stations are quite complex and usually require a lot of stair climbing, especially when doing a quick transfer from train to train. Elevators aren't always available and cannot accommodate many people at a time, so if you are choosing to bring a suitcase, please ensure you can lift and carry it up and down stairs by yourself without difficulty. A backpack is often preferred by travellers for this reason, but the decision is yours. Our ryokans allow suitcases but you'll need to carry them, not wheel them onto the tatami floor in your room.

Climate Japan has four distinct seasons with a climate ranging from subarctic in the north to subtropical in the south. You may notice a difference in weather conditions depending on whether you’re on the Pacific or the Sea of Japan side. Northern Japan has warm summers and very cold winters with heavy snow in mountainous areas. Eastern Japan has hot and humid summers and winters are often cold with snow in mountainous areas. Western Japan has very hot and humid summers with mild winters. Read more about Japan’s climate or watch our video here .

Cherry Blossom Viewing  Cherry Blossom season changes year to year depending on the forecast. The magic of cherry blossoms in Japan is undeniable, however, like all things in nature, the exact bloom times can vary depending on weather conditions.

While we can't control the whims of Mother Nature, we can embrace the spirit of Hanami (flower viewing). This philosophy celebrates the fleeting beauty of the blossoms, reminding us to cherish the present moment.

Therefore, depending on your departure date, some locations on our itinerary might not be at full bloom. The beauty of Japan extends far beyond the blossoms. We may encounter early blooms in some areas or visit breathtaking landscapes elsewhere. Let's embrace the surprise and enjoy the journey together!

Currency and ATMs The currency used in Japan is the Yen. Most chains and hotels will accept cards. Convenience stores are the best places to withdraw cash as almost every store is fitted with an ATM that accepts foreign cards. There are over 20,000 7-Eleven stores across the country, in addition to chains like Lawsons and Family Mart.

Food and Allergies  While travelling with Inspiring Vacations you'll enjoy iconic sightseeing, as well as experience the vast array of culinary offerings in Japan. While many meals will be eaten together with your group, not all meals are included in your tour which gives you maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let our Customer Support Team know before departure. Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will also be able to give suggestions on which restaurants to try during your trip.

The Japanese daily diet contains gluten (i.e. in flavourings such as soy sauce) and seafood (dashi, or fish stock, is the basis of most dishes, even vegetables), so we highly recommend that vegetarians, vegans and coeliacs do their research about the options that might be available to them before departure. While our leaders will assist you where they can, there may be some included meals that are decided in advance and therefore cannot be altered or modified for different diets (such as those included meals at Ryokans). For those with a particular food allergy, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader will endeavour to advise the main ingredients in the dishes consumed. It is, however, still your responsibility to ensure that you do not ingest any problematic ingredients.

Onsens Visiting a traditional Japanese onsen, or hot spring, is a quintessential local experience while on tour. In a public onsen, this means bathing naked with others of the same sex. While the experience may feel uncomfortable at first, most groups end up enjoying this activity and are pleased they participated. There is very specific etiquette for visiting onsens - your Tour Leader can give you some tips and instructions. Please be aware that travellers with tattoos may not be permitted to enter public onsens. Private onsens may also be available - talk to your leader for more information.

Local Customs It's always a good idea to learn something about local customs before you travel, and visiting Japan is no exception. Your leader will be on hand to guide you through cultural differences during your trip. Please note, decorative tattoos are uncommon in Japanese culture and therefore you may receive curious and sometimes disapproving looks from locals. Generally, comments about your tattoos are not common, but please endeavour to wear modest clothing and check the rules for bathing in public onsens.

Dress Code While Japan is known for its eclectic fashion in some cities, overall it is quite a conservative country. Please remember while on tour you will visit temples, working monasteries, holy shrines, recreated villages and castles, cooking schools and ancient gardens. While visiting such places, especially those of religious significance, it is important to be respectful to the staff and other visitors by wearing modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

Responsible Dining We are big supporters of the protection of endangered species around the world. Although a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986, approximately 1,000 whales are still being killed every year. We do not visit places that serve whale meat on any of our trips, nor will your leader guide you to where it is offered.

Tipping Your Leader While gratuities are not included in your tour price, tips are a welcome gesture of appreciation. Tipping is, of course, at your discretion and the amount is entirely a personal preference, however, US$8-10 per person, per day (or the equivalent in the local currency), is a good guide.

Peak Travel Times Please be aware that while travelling during major national holidays (late April to early May in Japan) and peak seasons in Japan (April-May/September–October) are fascinating times to travel, there are also some downsides to consider. There will be huge crowds at most tourist attractions and on all public transport. It's often difficult to secure train tickets at preferred times, and traffic jams and changes to the itinerary without prior notice can sometimes be necessary. If you decide to travel during peak periods, come with a sense of adventure and flexibility and you will still have a memorable experience.

Safety and Security Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your own government's advice for the most up-to-date travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your trip.

Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will accompany you on all included activities listed on the itinerary, however, you'll have some free time to explore on your own if you wish. While your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide will assist you as best they can with your requests and the options available outside your itinerary, please note Inspiring Vacations makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running the activity. Please use your judgement when selecting an activity in your free time.

Please also note that your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns.

Apps to Download Some useful apps you may want to consider downloading before your tour include Google Translate, the lens function is especially useful when wanting to read product labels, signs, and menus. Google Maps with offline maps downloaded is great for easy navigation without being reliant on wifi. The most widely used taxi app is GO Taxi. We also recommend downloading WhatsApp before you leave and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour. For those visiting during cherry blossom season, the Sakura Navi app (developed by the Japan Meteorological Corporation) is a must—it tracks the cherry blossom forecast in real-time for the entire country.

Post-Tour Feedback Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.

Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth trip survey. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your trip has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.

Finishing Point Your finishing hotel may differ from the original itinerary. Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14-30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list. If you need to book additional post-tour accommodation, please do so once you have the final hotel list. We recommend booking a flexible rate that can be changed or cancelled without penalty should there be any unforeseen changes to your booking.

Travellers will depart at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. Check-out time is generally from 10am-12pm. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time. This service is subject to availability and will likely come at an additional cost payable directly.

Departure Details Airport transfers are included as part of your package, so long as you are departing as per the purchased itinerary. If you have purchased an extension, either pre or post-tour, the applicable transfer service will be forfeited from your package and you will need to make your arrangements to the starting hotel.

Where the service remains included, your tour leader will confirm the pick-up time from your hotel to the airport and this will depend on the flight that you have booked. Generally, you will be required to be at the airport approximately 3 hours before your scheduled departure.

Where the service has been forfeited due to an extended stay, we do offer airport transfers at an additional cost which can be booked via your Traveller Hub.

If you're having any problems finding the hotel, please ring the hotel directly or you can phone our customer support team for on-tour assistance.

Traditional Taiko Drumming

A Hands-On Lesson

Gero Onsen Yunoshimakan

Tradition meets innovation.

Built on the slopes of Mt. Yunoshima (Mt. Gero) in 1931, Yunoshimakan's buildings and gardens were designed to weave through the groves of cedar and cypress trees said to be hundreds of years old as a sign of respect for the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Combining traditional Japanese-style architecture in its main building and annex, with its guest rooms built and designed in sukiya-zukuri style, and Western-influences in its entertainment building, Yunoshimakan is the perfect blend of tradition and innovation.

Cruise Lake Ashi

Lake ashi, in mt. fuji's shadow.

Sometimes known as Hakone Lake or Ashinoko Lake, Japan's Lake Ashi is a picturesque crater lake set on the caldera of volcanic Mt. Hakone on the island of Honshu. The lake is famous not only for the sight of Mt. Fuji, Japan's tallest peak, looming over it, but for the many volcanically heated hot springs and historic sites along its shores. Foremost among these is Hakone Shrine in the lakeside town of Hakone, a Shinto shrine that has been frequently visited by samurai, shogun and pilgrims since the 17th century. Your cruise along Lake Ashi's sparkling waters offers great views of such sites and, weather permitting, iconic Mt. Fuji in the distance.

The opportunities to experience the 'Onsen', wear a Yukata and stay one night in a traditional Japanese hotel were not to be missed.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Japan; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Japan to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

The deposit amount is $600 per person

Final Payments:

Final Payment is due to Tauck  90  days before departure for lands trips, and  120  days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. If your deposit was made by credit card, final payment will be automatic unless you opted out at time of booking. Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $759  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

89-8 days before departure = $1250 per person

7-1 days before departure = $2000 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

To help in your packing, we are pleased to provide you with a special Tauck duffel bag (24 x 12 ½ x 13 in). This bag will be required on days 5 & 6 and 8 & 9 of your journey and has been specially designed to provide more than adequate space for essential items needed while on tour during these days. Upon arrival to your hotel on days 7 and 10, you will be reunited with your luggage. If you are a resident of the U.S., your bag will be sent to you two weeks prior to your departure date. If you reside outside of the U.S., you will receive your bag upon arrival in Japan because customs regulations prohibit the easy delivery of the duffel bags in advance. Packing an overnight bag on these occasions will ensure the safe and timely arrival of your luggage at your next destination, and we appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

IMPORTANT: An overnight bag for your stay at the Tobira Onsen on Day 5 should be packed including all essential clothing and personal care items as the balance of the luggage will be transported by luggage truck and there will be no access to the remainder of your luggage. A small bag with wheels that you can comfortably manage on your own without assistance is strongly suggested.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally,   no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Japan. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking  here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this active tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.  We recommend that you pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in to appreciate fully what Japan has to offer.

Some sites have limited motor coach access and often involve walking some distance from the motor coach parking to the site itself. Due to the ancient nature of several of the sites you will visit, stairs, walkways and garden paths are sometimes uneven, irregular, steep and/or slippery. If you join us for the visit to the fish market, you should be aware that there are crowds of people and fast-moving carts and forklifts. Quite often, you will be asked to remove your shoes to gain entry into the temples, shrines and historical residences along your journey.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather throughout the Japan's four main islands is generally temperate, with four distinct seasons. The weather can get very hot during the summer months, particularly in the South. May, June and July are the wettest months, and June, July and August are hotter and more humid.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website,  noaa.gov , by clicking  here .

What To Pack

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

We recommend that you dress smartly. Jeans and capri pants are suitable for casual dining and sightseeing. However, shorts are rarely seen outside of hiking or sport venues, unless they are longer-length Bermuda shorts. Most women wear cropped length pants and they do not, as a rule, wear t-shirts.

Most wear a conservative top that may be sleeveless but is not low-cut, and many Japanese women wear heels even with casual clothes.

Shoes that are easily removed are essential, as it is customary to remove shoes when entering temples, shrines, private homes and certain restaurants. Clean socks and hosiery are also required to avoid unnecessary embarrassment.

Japan's top French restaurants usually require jackets and ties. The older generation considers it inappropriate for women to wear dresses without hose or tops without sleeves.

Bring packets of pocket-sized tissue and handkerchiefs, as tissue and paper towels are often not found in lavatories.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Japan:

  • Cotton, cotton/synthetic and linen clothing
  • Light weight shirts, pants, capri pants and dresses
  • Light jacket or sweater
  • Jacket and tie and casually-elegant attire for fine dining
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Shoes that are easy to slip on and off when visiting places of worship
  • Clean socks (for temple visits where you need to remove your shoes)
  • Hat (a wide brimmed hat is recommended)
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Soap leaves, travel packets of tissues, handkerchiefs and hand sanitizer (toilet tissue and paper towels are not available in many lavatories)
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotel rooms do not have clocks)
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.
