There is no direct train from the city of Paris to the town of Normandy, but there are direct trains that run from Paris to Caen and Paris to Bayeux, which both lie in the heart of Normandy .

However, since many of the most popular tourist attractions (i.e. the D-Day Beaches, Mont Saint-Michel, Étretat, etc.) are spanned across 150 miles (240 kilometers) on the western coast of France, we recommended either booking a full day guided tour that includes private transportation like the ones below, or renting your own car.

Buses and trams are convenient in the area, however, if you want to be on your own schedule, then a car rental is best .

How Long is the Train Ride from Paris to Normandy?

The train rides from Paris to Normandy take between 2-3 hours each way and are quite comfortable . If you’re wondering “ how to get to Normandy from Paris”, the train is by far the best way if you decide to visit on your own without a guide.

The 2-hour train is a direct route from Paris Saint-Lazare to Gare de Caen. We recommend this train since it removes the need to change lines and will get you to your destination faster.

It is typically more expensive, however, but do your best to compare prices before booking.

The 3-hour train ride also departs from Paris Saint-Lazare, but it stops at the Gare de Rouen before making its way to Gare de Caen.

If you are visiting Normandy for at least a few days and don’t mind the extra stop and are looking to save some money, this is a perfect option!

If you do decide to book one of the local tours from Bayeux, be sure to book a train to Bayeux and not Caen if that is where you plan on spending your time before the tour.

On June 6th, 1944 an unprecedented event took place on the Beaches of Normandy. It was a highly detailed and extremely difficult offensive attack on the Third Reich by more than 150,000 Allied troops arriving by sea and air. The epic battle waged on D-Day was crucial to the liberation of France, the outcome of WWII, and the future of the free world.

Whether you’re a military history buff or someone who is just curious about D-Day, our guide will share the day’s events so you can better appreciate the remarkable acts of bravery and selfless sacrifice which took place on the beaches of Normandy.

German Bunkers and Omaha Beach

Meet up in the morning with your guide close to the Arch de Triomphe in Paris and head off in a small group of 8 people to retrace the amazing events of D-Day and the Normandy Invasion. The Beaches of Normandy are only 2 hours away from Paris with lots of beautiful French countryside in between.

Arriving in Normandy you’ll explore part of the “Atlantic Wall” built by the Third Reich as you follow your guide into a battery of German bunkers. You’ll see and touch the huge guns that still point towards England and learn about the many extreme fortifications the Allied troops had to fight against when they landed on D-Day.

You’ll then drive to Omaha Beach where the most difficult and impressive attack happened. It’s called “Bloody Omaha” by WWII veterans because in a matter of hours almost 2,500 men lost their lives on this beach. Despite being pinned down by heavy artillery, the surviving soldiers fought with bravery and ingenuity to overcome the enemy.

Operation Overlord Museum and the Pointe du Hoc

Diving deeper into the details of the Invasion of Normandy you’ll visit the Overlord Museum and discover its unparalleled collection. You’ll have an hour of free time inside to see personal items from soldiers, heavy artillery, and other equipment that actually took part in the invasion.

After your visit to the museum it will be lunch time. The guide will take you to a nearby restaurant that has many local specialties such as French barbecued meats, different salads, as well as savory and sweet crepes. You’ll have one hour to rest and enjoy your lunch.

Then you’ll visit the Pointe du Hoc. Walking on the battle scarred earth where allied bombs exploded, you’ll make your way to the edge of the 100ft tall cliffs. Peering over the edge you’ll wonder how the Army Rangers accomplished the impossible task of scaling the cliffs under heavy enemy fire without any back up.

The American Cemetery

Leaving the Pointe du Hoc behind you’ll enjoy a short break at a family owned Cider House. There you’ll have free tastings of the famous Normandy hard cider and Calvados that were made locally. Anyone who prefers not to drink alcohol can enjoy an outstanding apple juice.

To finish your adventure on the coast of Normandy you will visit the American Cemetery. The guide will share many incredible acts of bravery and heroism that individual men performed and show you where these men rest today. You’ll be able to pay your respects to Medal of Honor heroes, Theodore Roosevelt Jr, and the Niland brothers who inspired the movie Saving Private Ryan.

The ride back to Paris will take a little over 2 hours long and will include a stop for you to use the restroom and stretch your legs. You’ll arrive back in Paris at about 8pm and say goodbye to your guide at the Arch de Triomphe.

• Restrooms are available at every stop we make on the tour except for on Omaha Beach. We always make a rest stop during the drives to and from Paris.

If you plan out your travel time poorly, arrive late, and miss your tour we will feel sad that you missed your tour but we will not issue you a refund.

We accept children that are at least 7 years old on this tour. While this tour’s content was not planned out with kids in mind we do allow children that are aged at least 7 years old to join it with one of their parents. Kids younger than 7 years cannot join this tour as we do NOT have the suitable baby/child seats for them to ride in that are required by European law.

There is no legal drinking age in France for minors who drink under the supervision of a parent. It is illegal to allow a minor to become inebriated (drunk). The legal age to buy alcohol is 18.

No, sorry we cannot do this on one of our public small group tours. The other tour participants are expecting us to keep our word and run the tour in the way it has been advertised on our website.

I - Cancellation Policy

BFT offers a 100% refund if a reservation is cancelled more than 24 hours before the scheduled start of the tour. The notification must be made by email. No refunds are given for ANY reason once within the 24 hrs prior to the scheduled tour. All of our tours run Rain or Shine. We do not issue refunds if you choose to skip your tour because the weather doesn’t suit you. You can always wait until the last minute to book your tour to ensure the weather suits you that day. BFT reserves the right to cancel any of its tours last minute in case of an Act of God or crazy act from a large group of people. Flooding, hail, dangerous weather conditions, riots, etc. In such instances full refunds will be given to anyone who had their tour cancelled.

II - Satisfaction Guarantee Policy

If the tour you took with us didn’t live up to what we promised you on our website and failed to meet your expectations, we will be heartbroken. We will also give you a 100% refund so long as you do all of these things: You remember that we we are in no way responsible for the weather and that our guides actually have to give 110% of themselves to you on days when the weather is not as nice in order to help you enjoy the tour. You participate in the entire tour from: being on time at the meeting point until the “goodbyes” at the very end of the tour. You can’t leave a tour half-way and ask for your money back. At the end of the tour you tell your guide, in person, that you were not satisfied with the tour you took. You provide your tour guide with the reasons you were not satisfied with the tour itself.

A valid credit card is required to secure your booking. All reservations must be prepaid online prior to the tour. We accept Visa, Mastercard. None of your personal credit card or billing information is stored by BFT.

IV - Privacy Policy

We are committed to protecting your privacy. Your personal informations will never be disclosed to any third parties.

V - Child Policy

All reservations made for children under the age of 18 years old must be made by an adult and we must be informed at the time of booking exactly how many children are in your party and their ages. This is vital information as it allows our guide to prepare the proper child sized equipments for the bike tours and the booster seats for all day trips/excursions that use one of our vans. All reservations made for a minor under the age of 18 years old must also include the reservation for an adult who will be 100% solely responsible for the safety and well being of the child while on the tour. Every child, under the age of 12 years old, partaking in a bicycle tour will be required to wear a helmet and a reflective vest as per French Law. The adult who accompanies the child agrees to the responsibility of choosing a properly sized helmet, adjusting the helmet, and keeping the helmet on the head of the child during the whole tour. Blue Fox Travel has helmets in multiple sizes for you to choose from at no cost. Don't forget: Children who will be riding in a baby/child seat, on a tandem attachment bike, or in a booster seat in one of our vans absolutely MUST have their seat reserved beforehand. We NEED to know exactly what your child will need before they show up. Please make it clear in the “Special Requirements” section of our booking form.

VI- Child Bike Policy

Children who will be riding on their own may be subject to a very short test run before the tour starts in which they will be expected to demonstrate: that they are well suited for their bike’s size and settings, that they know how to brake properly and that they are, in general, good cyclists who can be trusted to follow their tour guide in a safe manner. We own 20” and 24” kids bikes (size of the wheel). Adult bikes are 26”. If the guide, or manager, finds that the child is not, for any reason, a good enough cyclist then the guide, or manager, has the right to refuse to let the child follow the tour on a personal bike. This means they will either be asked to ride on one of our ‘tandem attachments’ which is attached to the back of a parents bike OR asked to ride in a child seat attached to the back of a parents bike. If the child refuses the change, then the guide or manager has the right to cancel the reservation, and not allow you and your child on the bike tour. Refunds will not be issued if your reservation is cancelled because of your child not being able to cycle and their refusal to ride attached to you. Baby seats are for kids that are between the ages of 1 and 3 years old (max weight 22 kg (48 lbs)). We also have some cool Burley™ tandem attachment bikes that are suitable for little kids who are too big for the baby seat but too small to cycle on their own (max weight 38 kg (85 lbs) - max height 137 cm (4 ft 6 in)).

VII - Damages to Blue Fox Travel Property

If you or anyone in your party damages a vehicle, a Blue Bike™, a vehicle, a child's bike, a helmet, a baby/child seat, a tandem attachment bike, any bike attachments, or a booster seat in such a way that it becomes badly disfigured, broken, or unusable, then BFT reserves the right to claim a fee of up to the cost of repair of the damaged bike/vehicle or object.

Our van was on time picking us up from the meeting place in Paris. After a 45 min drive and once in the city of Versailles, handed us over to Vladina, our tour guide for the Versailles Palace portion of the visit. Vladina, was professional and knowledgeable. She guided us through the King's and Queen's apartments. The rest of the visit was on our own. We bought the full day in Versailles with access to the Palace and the Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet. To get to the Grand and Petit Trianons and the Hamlet you could either walk, pay for the train (9€ ppl) or rent a golf cart for 4 ppl. We went for the train. Walking was not an option for us since it was a big distance from one place to the other plus the weather was not the best, rainy and gloomy, but that did not keep us from enjoying the visit. It is less crowded with people this time of the year so it was possible to move through the rooms at a good pace plus have opportunities to take photos. Exactly at 12:15 I received a text message that the driver "might be late" due to traffic. At 12:30 I still hadn't seen the driver, so I called the tour company. I was told he was 5 minutes away. Another 15 minutes later, still no driver! I called again and was told even if he did show up now, Versailles would not let our group in for the tour. Overall, my husband and I wasted an hour of our Paris visit standing on the sidewalk in the rain, waiting for a van that never came. Then, we still had to make our way to Versailles on our own and wait in a long line for tickets, then go through the visit without guidance. Luckily, TripAdvisor issued a full refund, at least. I was really upset and told the driver we would have liked to have known and I would have canceled. Being trapped in a car on an off ramp was not acceptable to me. Vikings & Veterans: Sailing the Seine in Paris and Normandy

T he River Seine conjures dreams of gilded bridges in romantic cities, and yet, it was also a major raiding and trading route for the Vikings, and, in more recent history, as a strategic location for some of World War II’s most infamous characters, and where the events that began the end of the war occurred. 

It has always been an important river, yet its importance belongs not only to those of the past, but also to us, the travelers of today.  

I had the fortune of being invited on a press trip with Viking River Cruises, on the line’s seven-day Paris & Normandy sailing. We sailed on the Viking Radgrid, which was built in 2020, on the second voyage of its 2024 European sailing season. 

It was my first time in Europe and in France, and I learned so much .The itinerary began with two days in Paris before heading to the region of Normandy, following the route that the original Vikings once took after they raided Paris in the early Middle Ages.

We stopped in La Roche-Guyon, Vernon, Rouen and Les Andelys, before heading back for one more day in Paris, though by this time, high water levels meant we had to port in Le Pecq, a few miles outside of Paris. 

Porting in Le Pecq didn’t stop any scheduled activities, though. We also had opportunities to visit other towns, such as Auvers-Sur-Oise, where Vincent Van Gogh spent his last seventy days and where he and his brother, Theo, are buried, and the picturesque town of Honfleur. 

J’Adore Paris: Days One and Two 

Paris is a lovely place in the springtime. While you can expect the overcast skies and occasional inclement weather that is typical of springtime, Paris is still a lively city, full of the beauty that has given it a reputation for romance. 

It’s also busy preparing for the 2024 Paris Olympics . The world’s largest sporting event is expected to draw millions of spectators, and the city is preparing accordingly. Many of the major attractions, such as the Place de la Concorde, were surrounded by concrete barricades and made transiting by bus or car a bit more challenging. Eventually, we were told, many of the streets we drove would become pedestrian-only for attendees.

While in Paris, I enjoyed a walking tour of the area directly outside our ship, the modern Beaugrenelle area, which was about fifteen minutes away from the Eiffel Tower on foot. I also took a panoramic tour of the city—the photo opportunities were amazing—and went on a short trip to the Palace of Versailles. I may have only had two days in Paris, but it was a wonderful introduction to the city. 

La Roche-Guyon & Auvers-Sur-Oise: Day Three

We left Paris by night and sailed to our second destination: the small town of La Roche-Guyon. The town is home to less than 500 inhabitants and its own château, which is its largest attraction. The château is also accompanied by a beautiful 300-year-old manicured garden, in which everything is grown to eat. 

My first view of the French countryside was beautiful; everything was vibrantly green, even under overcast skies, and the white blossoms of the garden’s pear trees were in full bloom, radiant. 

I’d chosen to take an optional tour while in La Roche-Guyon, visiting the château, learning about its former inhabitants (including, during France’s occupation, Erwin Rommel) and also about how people in the past ate their meals.

One thing I loved about Viking’s tours: they always offer optional experiences depending on ability level. For example, we had an option to climb the town’s 12th-century watchtower that was built to keep the region safe from English invaders. I chose to climb them, and while it was a challenge, the view at the top was worth it. 

In the afternoon, after we’d returned to the ship to eat lunch, I chose to go on a different tour, one that took me inland to the small town of Auvers-Sur-Oise. There, our guide took our small group around the areas of the town where Van Gogh had lived, painted, died and was buried. 

Along the way, she gave us an introduction to the people now called Normans: Vikings who found better opportunities in trade and diplomacy along the Seine than their raiding had given them in the past. 

Auvers-Sur-Oise itself is charming; it offers a chocolate shop, a boulangerie, a tourist office, several parks and plenty of things to do for a Van Gogh lover. All across town, small bronze circles with the name Vincent had been pounded into the pavement. These were places where he’d once set down his easel to paint. Van Gogh lived in this town during the last seventy days of his life, and during these, he painted over seventy paintings. 

By the time we came back to the ship, it had sailed to Vernon, and we spent the evening there before departing to Rouen. 

Remembering Jeanne D’Arc: Day Four

We stayed in our next port, Rouen, for two days. As the capital city of Normandy, it boasts over 100,000 residents and a history dating back to ancient Rome. I spent my first day there enjoying the town’s historic center, which largely consists of old stone walls and the half-timbered buildings that are typical of Norman construction from the Middle Ages onward. 

There is also a more modern side to Rouen: these parts, which are home to newer buildings that are markedly different from their half-timbered older siblings, had been bombed during World War II and rebuilt in the decades that followed.

Yet Rouen’s claim to fame goes back centuries prior to the Second World War: its gorgeous 11th-century Notre-Dame de Rouen Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, and its historic city center is forever memorialized as the location where Joan of Arc was famously burned at the stake. There is now a church dedicated to her where she was killed. 

Rouen is a great place to shop, visit historic sites, eat great food, practice your French language skills and just enjoy French living. While it’s a fairly large city, it also feels quite quaint, so it’s easy to walk around and immerse yourself in the city’s charming atmosphere. 

World War II & D-Day Memorial: Day Five

The next day was the most popular excursion of the entire cruise, and in fact, the majority of cruisers I talked to said it was the main reason why they’d chosen the itinerary. 

It was Viking’s curated WWII Memorial excursion. There were two available, one for the American participation in D-Day and the other for those within Commonwealth countries, like Canada and Australia.

This year, the excursion is incredibly special, as June 6, 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The American tour included a visit to the Caen Memorial Museum, a visit to the Normandy American Cemetery and to Omaha Beach, where one of the worst battles had been fought. The vast majority of my fellow cruisers had chosen to take one of the two offered excursions. 

The day began earlier than usual with a quick breakfast, then we got into our coach bus and whizzed down scenic country highways north, towards Caen and the Atlantic coastline. It was a short road trip, about an hour or so, until we reached the Caen Memorial Museum and learned about the human toll the Second World War had on the world, and the local impact it had on the French—and Normandy, in particular.

We ate a private meal at the museum, then headed towards the Normandy American Cemetery , which is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission. 

Readers, it’s a very special place. From the manicured gardens, one can look out to the sea. Each of the nearly 10,000 cemetery markers face west: towards home. The Walls of the Missing ring around the backside of the towering bronze “Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves,” statue, an homage to those who lost their lives on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. 

While at the cemetery, Viking held a special memorial service for those who participated in the war, and for those who served in the military afterward. Several cruisers stood in a row as we honored their service, and the service of their parents, some of whom had served in WWII on D-Day itself.

Our last stop was Omaha Beach, where two memorial sculptures stood as a testament that many people, many between the ages of 18 and 24, had lost their lives to defend freedom worldwide. 

Today, it’s a peaceful place. It becomes idyllic under a sunny sky, like a scene from an impressionist painting. Such terror had happened there, and yet, the beach had healed, becoming once more what it had always been: a place where the sea touches the land in an endless cycle of ebb and flow. 

Les Andelys: Day Six

Our sixth day of the cruise brought us to Les Andelys, a small area comprising two towns that had blended together over the centuries (Le Petit-Andely and Le Grand Andely), along with the historic Château Gaillard, which was built in the last years of the twelfth century by Richard the Lionheart.It was also Easter, and I spent the morning wandering the storybook town, enjoying the flowering trees and tulips that bloomed in every direction I looked, and the rare blue sky and sunshine beaming overhead. 

While most of the stores were closed, a few were open or opened in the afternoon, and I popped into a few to find some locally made souvenirs, along with some more traditional ones (fridge magnets are always a great souvenir). 

After a lunch break, I headed back into the town for a walking tour, which took us up to the Château Gaillard on a steep, paved walking path. There was an optional, unpaved shortcut that I took along with two others, and it got us to the top of the castle in less time. No matter which way you take, the view is spectacular!Yet by the time I made it back down to the town, a thunderstorm had begun. Hail poured down for about twenty minutes. I sheltered under an eave of a building and waited it out, happy that I’d worn my waterproof boots and only had to worry about my wet clothes and hair. 

Spring in France, and in Normandy in particular, is unpredictable. While none of the weather ruined my cruise, I would advise travelers visiting during the spring to pack accordingly: at least one raincoat and waterproof boots. 

I then made it to the town’s boulangerie to console myself with a pain au chocolat and a chouquette, which is a small choux pastry, before heading back to the ship. 

Le Pecq, and Back to Paris: Day Seven

This was the last day. In the morning, we took a short bus ride to the Château de Malmaison, the famous home of Napoleon’s first wife, Josephine. He’d lived with her there for years during their marriage, and it was there where he made the decision to sell the Louisiana Territory to America. It was a beautiful place, with a sizable garden with tulips everywhere. 

In the afternoon, I took an optional excursion to the Louvre, which included a dinner at a traditional brasserie in Paris. While the Louvre was crowded (it was the day after Easter, after all), I’m happy to have visited with a guide who was well-versed in dealing with the crowds.I loved getting to sit down and eat in Paris for the brasserie dinner portion of the tour. My dinner consisted of a tomato and mozzarella salad, a leg of lamb and a large profiterole for dessert—a delicious ending to an amazing week. 

A Week of a Lifetime: à La Prochaine

While the week may have ended, I will carry the memories I made in France for a lifetime. 

It was an incredibly easy journey: I didn’t have to worry about how to get to the ship from the airport, or how to transit to the places I wanted to visit, or even how best to communicate with French shopkeepers (I received a lot of great tips from our cruise director— a happy “Bonjour!” goes a long way).

Not only that, but I found myself constantly walking in step with history. I’d studied it in college, and found myself standing where Joan of Arc was killed, following the trade route of the Vikings, or stepping on the same sand where so many young men died in one of the worst conflicts in modern history—that left an impression on me.

France—and perhaps, the rest of Europe, or any so-called Old World—is a lot like that beach, I think. It walks hand in hand with history, both the good and the bad. Its many centuries of human conflict, ingenuity and all the complexities of life ebb and flow around it, centuries of births and deaths and creation and destruction, all memorialized for the traveler to discover. 

“It happened here,” France beckons. “Come, and admire.”

This Iconic Kitchenware Brand Launches Culinary Trips That Include Harvesting Oysters in Normandy and Olive Oil Tasting in Marseille

The food-focused journeys will immerse travelers in French culinary traditions.

Hungry for adventures? Sur La Table, the national retailer of cookware and bakeware, is entering the travel industry by launching a series of trips to immerse travelers in the culinary traditions of France. The Seattle-based company partnered with Academic Travel Abroad Inc., a decades-old cultural and educational travel provider, to host two curated itineraries in September and October, with more journeys coming up in 2025.

“At Sur La Table, we’re constantly looking for new ways to engage with our customers that bring to life our passion for cooking and celebrating cuisine from around the world,” Meredith Abbot, culinary director and trip expert at Sur La Table, told Travel+Leisure, noting that the partnership will allow the company to “take our signature cooking programming to the most iconic culinary destinations for a fully immersive trip.”

Cooking classes, visits to local markets, food tours, and workshops with artisans will be some of the experiences included in the hyper-local itineraries. The first trip will take place from Sept. 1 until Sept. 8 and will introduce travelers to the gastronomic culture of Northwestern France. From learning to harvest mussels and oysters in the Bay of Biscay to making crepes in the historic port city of Saint-Malo, smoking salmon, and visiting the picture-perfect island of Mont Saint-Michel (at low tide, of course), this week-long trip will whisk travelers to some of the most beautiful corners of Brittany and Normandy. 

The second culinary journey, A Taste of Provence and the French Riviera will take place in Marseille and Nice from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6. Guests will try their hand at preparing classic Bouillabaisse seafood soup with a local chef, will learn all about sea salt production in the small village of Salins de Giraud, and will cook a classic Niçois meal with fresh produce from a local organic farm. Another highlight of this trip is a private tour of the Maison Empereur, the oldest specialty store in France. 

Both trips will include hands-on experiences and lectures so travelers leave with a better understanding of the history and culture of these distinct culinary regions. Groups will cap at 25 people, and rates start at $7,995, excluding flights. 

In a press release, Sur La Table said that its 2025 itineraries will include Paris and the South of Italy.
