What are Customers are saying about us

Quality Assurance Travel is absolutely the BEST! On December 27, all of our Southwest tickets were canceled and I had to find a way to get my entire hockey team down to Riverside California from San Jose for two mandatory hockey games. So, I considered looking into a motorcoach. Our driver was so professional, so kind, and even watched both of our hockey games. The bus was as clean and as comfortable as I could've prayed for!! I would recommend this company to anyone looking to rent a motorcoach, or a bus for any reason whatsoever.

Quality Assurance Travel is always my go-to bus travel company in the San Jose area. They do an amazing job communicating and taking care of your large group travel needs. I work for a school and I know I can rely on them to safely take our students to and from field trips. Huge shout out to Elena & Javier Moreno! Elena is so helpful in booking and Javier is a very experienced driver who is also very accommodating! Thank you again to this team, I appreciate everything!

Used Quality assurance travel shuttle this past Friday for my daughter's wedding. Bus driver was very friendly. Shuttle was clean and the drive was very smooth. Pick from the fairmont hotel was on time and pick up from city hall was also on time to drive to the restaurant. The pick up from the restaurant back to the hotel was also on time. I highly recommend this company for any events. No worry about driving around SF and parking

We had our staff retreat in Oakland and part of the retreat were site visits to organizations we work with. We looked for transport options and Quality Assurance Travel provided us with a good rate and we were glad with the service they provided. Their travel representatives communicated well and there was no need for extra phone calls or emails given that there were different buses and pick-up times. QAT provided prompt and great service.

We went from Palo Alto to Spirit Rock for a morning retreat and back in the afternoon, a 2 hr drive in each way. Quality Assurance Travel offered us a good rate. The driver arrived on time and service was decent. Will use them again.

Directions Needed for a 3 weeks California Trip

Travel Forums North America Directions Needed for a 3 weeks California Trip

My Girlfriend is insisting on a trip to California in Sept 2008. Have no idea where shall i start ? Any Kind Americans in california care to direct me to the "Must-See" Sites in California ?

Just to give you an insight of what kind place that we would be interested, please advise on the following places :

1) Las Vegas - Do advise on the direction to get there from LA

2) San Francisco - Places of Interest like The Famous Prison, forgotten the name of it , and etc

3) Mexico - Any Places of interest to go, if time really permits.

I'm allocating a week each for the following place. Also, you guys can also advise on whether Las Vegas is a "must go" city. Given the fact, that we're City Dwellers from Singapore.

I kindly hope that anyone kind season travellers out there would be dear enough to give me some directions.

Thank you yowyow81

I think Mexico is another trip. Too much to see and too far to travel in the same trip as California.

Vegas is unique. I didn't consider myself a 'Vegas person' but I enjoyed it. Kind of a Disneyland for adults.

Alcatraz in SF is well worth a trip - I didn't know anything about its native American associations after it closed as a prison.

Don't spend too much time in LA, Hollywood is no beg deal. You'll be better travelling the Pacific Coast Highway.

I agree that Mexico might be best saved for another time. Hollywood, however, is great because it is such a part of the modern culture. Just hit the high spots with a bus tour, and studio tour, you might even look into getting tickets to a taping of a television show. Pacific Coast highway is beautiful but it can be slow going. Include part of it in your travel from LA to San Francisco. San Simeon is a good stop-over and the tour of Hearst Castle is enjoyable. Monterrey is also a nice stop. Have a look at Pebble Beach, if you're a golfer. But there are times when you may opt for a faster moving inland highway. Vegas is another cultural icon that is a must for some. It is a sea of neon in the desert. Lots of hotels, showplaces, casinos - but expensive. Personally, I'd skip it, but I understand why many people want to have a look. You will fill your three weeks with plenty to do.

Thanks Guys for your input.

Do you guys know the estimate of the cost of renting a car ?

About Las Vegas, what is the best way to get there from LA or San Francisco ? I noticed that Disneyland and Universal Studios isn't mentioned in your posts. Shouldn't these places significantly be considered in the part of the trip ?

The pacific highway route should be a long route i guess, any buses that go through that route and where can i get those tickets ?

Also, any good recommendations for food about the mentioned places ?

Driving in California can be difficult for visitors! While the roads and signing are some of the best in the world, Californians drive FAST, and the major roads (Interstate Highways) are mostly boring expressways (very little scenery at all).

Public bus travel in the USA is not good - where the poor and unwashed travel!

I would recommend flying from one major metro area to the next and using local tours to see the areas. Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines cover the state quite well.

I agree with Stevieh - Los Angeles is hot and big and NOT MUCH AT ALL!

San Francisco, Monterey/Carmel, San Diego, Napa and Sonoma counties, Lake Tahoe and the National Parks (Yosemite, Sequoia and Lassen) would be of interest to you. Las Vegas is one big huge neon display with spectacular hotels and casinos - quite cheap to fly there too.

California is HUGE! Do see the REDWOODS and some of the natural areas such as POINT LOBOS PARK near Carmel. The Monterey Aquarium is not to be missed. In my opinion San Francisco is the Paris of North America (it's a walkers' city - you'll miss it if you drive - it's so small.)

For the SF area, check out www.mapjack.com/SanFrancisco There are lots of links there for must-see places.

From San Fran travel down the coast road back to LA, give yourself a few days to do this as the road can be very tricky in places but the views are superb and you will find little gems like Monterey and Carmel - offshoot into San Luis Obispo if you have time and definitely go and see Hearst Castle as well.

I am not much of a fan of LA itself but there are still some great places to see there, definitely go and visit Disneyland and Universal studios, you can take a Hollywood tour but better, if you have the car is to drive there and walk around, Manns Chinese theatre and the walk of fame, also if you are in to interesting things the La Brea tar pits and the museum are very good and Venice beach is worth it just to people watch. South of LA is very nice as well ( obviously if you have time)the better beaches are south and definitely not as smoggy as LA.

To get to Las Vegas, take Interstate 10 60 miles east to Interstate 15, then go north 220 miles on I-15 to Las Vegas. The only places to stop once you get on I-15 are Victorville, Barstow, Baker or Primm. I suggest you stop at Barstow for eating on the way.

To get to SF from Las Vegas, take I-15 back as far as Barstow, then get on Hwy 58 to Bakersfield. From Bakersfield, go north on Highway 99 to Highway 46 (about 35 miles from Bakersfield). Then go west on Highway 46 to Paso Robles where you get on Highway 101. Then take Highway 101 north to SF.

P.S. You can also get to SF by getting off of Highway 46 before getting to Paso Robles and going north to Interstate 580,which you then take west to San Francisco. This route is about 20 to 30 minutes faster, but not nearly as scenic.

Future of backpacking uncertain as hostels charge more for European summer stays

Keiarna in a beanie travelling in front of a a valley with moutnains and clear water

Price hikes for hostels this summer in Europe are pushing budget travel out of reach for young Australians keen on a backpacking trip.

Keiarna Brooks has travelled across New Zealand, Canada and the United States over the past 18 months, and has noticed how high prices have climbed for accommodation.

The 20-year-old from the Sunshine Coast made plans to go to Europe this August, and was shocked by how expensive dorm rooms in a hostel have become.

"It's definitely an obstacle, and it's skyrocketed since COVID," she said.

"I've booked Vienna for two nights for two people, and that was 128 euros ($213)," she said.

"It's crazy … three nights in Amsterdam is looking like about $200, and this is in a four-bed mixed dorm."

Rachel Davey, who has backpacked across 195 countries, documents her travels with her partner Marty as part of their blog the Very Hungry Nomads .

She's noticed how different the costs of a European summer have become.

"I think it's sad that it has become more expensive for young people to travel," she said.

Price hikes 'necessary', hostel staff say

In the period from April 2023 to April 2024, almost 10 million residents returned to Australia from overseas — an increase of more than 4.7 million on the previous year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Fifty-seven per cent of people who travelled did so for a holiday, with 1.57 million Australians departing for overseas last month.

Despite masses of tourists returning over the past two years, managers of hostels across Europe say the accommodation price hikes have been necessary to recover from the pandemic.

Macarena Herrero Romero, who manages hostels in Madrid, Brussels and Bilbao, said inflation has caused a massive spike in day-to-day running costs.

"The increase in the price of utilities [post-pandemic] was huge," she said.

"Electricity, water and our laundry service all increased their prices.

"We make huge efforts not to increase our prices, but it was crazy last year."

A man with a red beard and hat stands at a counter in a hostel

Hayden Alexander, who manages a hostel in London, said electricity has definitely been a factor in the increased cost of a bed.

"We have seen that average price slowly creep up in those peak seasons," he said.

"You see bed rates are climbing up a lot higher than they used to be.

"[You're] probably looking at about a 20 per cent increase in a standard dormitory bed."

Even mixed dorms with up to 20 people, which are usually the cheapest option, are currently averaging about 30 to 56 British pounds ($57 to $110) per night in July.

The increase in price is also due to hostel guests expecting more than a bed from their stays, Venice Hostel manager Gianluca De Vit said.

Gianluca

Many now offer private rooms, modern designs, free events and a choice between mixed dorms and smaller amounts of beds in dorms which vary in price, to compete with other providers.

"You have to organise events free for your guests, but somehow you have to recover that money — maybe in the accommodation," he said.

"So of course they are going to attend the event, but maybe even pay three, four, five euros extra in accommodation."

Mr Alexander said the private rooms in his London hostel are designed to compete with lower-cost budget hotels, which is reflected in the price.

As a result, young backpacker-types aren't the only travellers attracted to this accommodation style.

'Flashpackers' changing the face of hostels

Ms Davey agrees guests in hostels aren't just young people on a budget anymore.

High demand means "flashpackers", who travel like backpackers but have more money to spend, will pay higher prices for rooms in hostels.

A woman in sunglasses and a puffer jacket in front of ruins in italy

"After COVID I think we missed a couple of years, [so now] everyone's travelling again and there's not enough accommodation — and hostels are usually in a really good location.

"So maybe they're putting the prices up because demand is there, because they can ask for that and they'll get it."

Ms Brooks is travelling to Europe while she can, as she thinks it will become less popular attainable over the next few years.

She said there are other parts of the world where it's still cheap to go backpacking.

"You can travel in Asia on $6000 if you're smart with it," she said.

"How far would that go in Europe?"

Cheaper alternatives

Last year, Skyscanner — based on consumer searches — found that 42 per cent of Australians believe the cost of flights to destinations is the biggest factor in deciding where they will go.

Search volumes for China, Japan and Thailand, which are closer to home, have therefore increased dramatically.

Miss Davey agrees there are still other options for cheaper travel for young people.

"You can make your money go further [in place] like South-East Asia and Latin America," she said.

But if young people want to experience a European summer, she believes they can still find a way.

"[It's worth looking at] other cities in popular countries, for example in Greece, instead of Corfu and Santorini there are smaller islands where you can get a cheaper room or dorm," she said.

Mr Alexander said forward planning and going in "shoulder seasons" — the months either side of the summer season, which is typically between May and August — would also help travellers save.

Connections and safety 'worth it'

While she may yet re-evaluate the timing of future trips, Miss Brooks said the hostel experience was still a vital part of her travelling.

"It's expensive, but you go to meet people and for the connection," she said.

"As a solo traveller, it's also for safety … being around other people."

a woman in a little hat and shirt eating spaghetti

Ms Davey agrees hostels are still a great way for young people to learn and gain confidence.

"I think budget travel is still achievable, depending on where you're going, and I still encourage young people to do it," she said.

Pilgrims begin final rites of Hajj as Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha

Muslim pilgrims cast stones at pillars in symbolic stoning of the devil, in Mina, near the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Masses of pilgrims on Sunday embarked on a symbolic stoning of the devil in Saudi Arabia under the soaring summer heat. The ritual marks the final days of the Hajj, or Islamic pilgrimage, and the start of the Eid al-Adha celebrations for Muslims around the world.

The stoning is among the final rites of the Hajj, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. It came a day after more than 1.8 million pilgrims congregated at a sacred hill, known as Mt. Arafat, outside the holy city of Mecca, which Muslim pilgrims visit to perform the annual five-day rituals of Hajj.

Fourteen Jordanian pilgrims have died due to sunstroke during the Hajj pilgrimage, according to Jordan’s state-run Petra news agency. The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it has coordinated with Saudi authorities to bury the dead in Saudi Arabia, or transfer them to Jordan.

The pilgrims left Mt. Arafat on Saturday evening to spend their night in a nearby site known as Muzdalifa, where they collected pebbles to use in the symbolic stoning of pillars representing the devil.

World & Nation

A usually joyous Muslim holiday falls amid the ruins and hunger of Gaza

Last summer, Palestinians in Gaza held celebrations for the Muslim holiday of Eid al Adha, but amid the Israel-Hamas war, there is hunger and despair.

June 15, 2024

The pillars are in another sacred place near Mecca, called Mina, where Muslims believe Ibrahim’s faith was tested when God commanded him to sacrifice his only son, Ismail. Ibrahim was prepared to submit to the command, but then God stayed his hand, sparing his son. In the Christian and Jewish versions of the story, Abraham is ordered to kill his other son, Isaac.

On Sunday morning, crowds headed on foot to the stoning areas. Some were seen pushing disabled pilgrims on wheelchairs on a multilane road leading to the complex housing the large pillars. Most pilgrims were seen sweltering and carrying umbrellas to protect them against the burning summer sun.

An Associated Press reporter saw many pilgrims, especially among the elderly, collapsing on the road to the pillars because of the burning heat. Security forces and medics were deployed to help using gurneys, carrying those who fainted out of the heat to ambulances or field hospitals. As the temperature spiked by midday, more people required medical help. The heat had reached to 116.6 Fahrenheit in Mecca, and 114.8 in Mina, according to Saudi meteorological authorities.

Despite the suffocating heat, many pilgrims expressed joy at being able to complete their pilgrimage.

“Thank God, [the process] was joyful and good,” said Abdel-Moaty Abu Ghoneima, an Egyptian. “No one wants more than this.”

Q&A: The hajj pilgrimage in Saudi and what it means in Islam

Each year between 2 to 3 million Muslims from around the world take part in a five-day pilgrimage in Mecca called the hajj.

Sept. 24, 2015

Many pilgrims will spend up to three days in Mina, each casting seven pebbles at three pillars in a ritual to symbolize the casting away of evil and sin.

While in Mina, they will visit Mecca to perform their “tawaf,” or circumambulation, which is circling the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque counterclockwise seven times. Then another circumambulation, the farewell tawaf, will mark the end of Hajj as pilgrims prepare to leave the holy city.

The rites coincide with the four-day Eid al-Adha, which means “Feast of the Sacrifice,” when Muslims with financial means commemorate Ibrahim’s test of faith by slaughtering livestock and animals and distributing the meat to the poor.

Most countries marked Eid al-Adha on Sunday. Others, such as Indonesia, will celebrate it Monday.

Once the Hajj is over, men are expected to shave their heads and remove the shroud-like white garments worn during the pilgrimage, and women to snip a lock of hair in a sign of renewal and rebirth.

Israel to pause daytime fighting in southern Gaza to help flow of stalled aid to Palestinians

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly angered upon learning of a pause in military operation and is then told there is no policy change.

June 16, 2024

Most of the pilgrims then leave Mecca for the city of Medina, about 210 miles away, to pray in Prophet Muhammad’s tomb, the Sacred Chamber. The tomb is part of the prophet’s mosque, one of the three holiest sites in Islam, along with the Grand Mosque in Mecca and Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

All Muslims are required to make the Hajj once in their lives if they are physically and financially able to do so. Many wealthy Muslims make the pilgrimage more than once. The rituals largely commemorate the accounts of Prophet Ibrahim and his son Prophet Ismail, Ismail’s mother Hajar and Prophet Muhammad, according to the Quran, Islam’s holy book.

More than 1.83 million Muslims performed Hajj in 2024, Saudi Hajj and Umrah Minister Tawfiq bin Fawzan al-Rabiah said in a briefing, slightly less than figures from last year, when 1.84 million made the rituals.

Most of the Hajj rituals are held outdoors with little if any shade. It is set for the second week of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month in the Islamic lunar calendar, so its time of the year varies. And this year the pilgrimage fell in the burning summer of Saudi Arabia.

This year’s Hajj came against the backdrop of the devastating Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, which has pushed the Middle East to the brink of a regional conflict.

Through personal ups and downs, they’ve waited years to perform hajj. These are their stories

This year’s hajj is a landmark: the first full pilgrimage after three years when the COVID-19 pandemic reduced the scale of one of Islam’s holiest rites.

Palestinians in Gaza weren’t able to travel to Mecca for Hajj this year because of the closure of the Rafah crossing in May when Israel extended its ground offensive to the city on the border with Egypt. And they will not be able to celebrate Eid al-Adha as they used to do in previous years.

Dozens of Palestinians gathered Sunday morning near a destroyed mosque in Gaza’s southern city of Khan Yunis to perform the Eid prayers. They were surrounded by debris and rubble of collapsed houses. In the nearby town of Deir al Balah in central Gaza, Muslims held their prayers in a school-turned-shelter. Some, including women and children, went to cemeteries to visit the graves of loved ones.

“Today, after the ninth month, more than 37,000 martyrs, more than 87,000 wounded, and hundreds of thousands of homes were destroyed,” Abdulhalim abu Samra, a displaced Palestinian, told the AP after wrapping up prayers in Khan Yunis. “Our people live in difficult circumstances.”

Also in the occupied West Bank, Palestinians convened for the Eid prayers in Ramallah, the seat of the Western-backed Palestinian Authority. “We suffer greatly and live through difficult moments with [what’s happening to] our brothers in Gaza,” said Mahmoud Mohana, a mosque imam.

In Yemen’s Houthi-held capital of Sana and in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, Muslims celebrated and prayed for the war-weary Palestinians in Gaza.

Hajj pilgrimage begins in Saudi Arabia, with capacity crowd of 2 million expected

Some 2 million Muslim pilgrims officially begin the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which is returning to full capacity for the first time since the pandemic.

“We are happy because of Eid, but our hearts are filled with anguish when we see our brothers in Palestine,” said Bashar al-Mashhadani, imam of the Gilani Mosque in Baghdad. “[We] urge the Arabic and Islamic countries to support and stand beside them in this ordeal.”

In Lebanon, where the militant Hezbollah group traded nearly daily attacks with Israel, a steady stream of visitors made their way into the Palestine Martyrs Cemetery near the Shatila Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut early Sunday morning, bearing flowers and jugs of water for the graves of their loved ones, an annual tradition on the first day of Eid.

The cemetery is the burial site of many Palestine Liberation Organization leaders and militants who died fighting Israeli forces in Lebanon in the 1970s and ’80s. More recently, top Hamas official Saleh Arouri and two other Hamas members killed with him in an apparent Israeli airstrike in Beirut’s southern suburbs in January were buried there.
