The Complete Pearl Harbor Tour Experience Departing Waikiki, Oahu Hotels

About your tour.

World War II in the Pacific comes to life on a day of drama and history as you visit main Pearl Harbor Historic Sites. Experience key moments of this global conflict, from the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Oahu that catapulted the U.S. into the war, to the September 2, 1945 Japanese surrender that ended WWII. Book your  Pearl Harbor tour from Waikiki  with us and make your trip a memorable one.

We begin at the USS Arizona Memorial where you’ll learn about the 1,177 seamen who perished when the Japanese surprise attack sunk their battleship on December 7, 1941. Prepare to be moved as you watch the documentary film and then ride the Navy vessel to the Memorial. At the Memorial, few moments can compare to witnessing the names and ranks of the lost heroes etched in marble in the Shrine Room. Look into the harbor and watch the oil droplets – “The Black Tears of the Arizona” – that continue to rise from sunken battleship after nearly 80 years.

The tour next visits the USS Missouri – the “Mighty Mo.” Stand on the deck where the Japanese surrendered while the ship was docked in Tokyo Bay, Japan on September 2, 1945. Note the massive guns of the Mighty Mo, learn about the dent caused by the crashing Kamikaze pilot, and hear about this impressive battleship’s five decades of service.

Your next stop is the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park. Known as the “Pearl Harbor Avenger,” the Bowfin launched December 7, 1942, one year after the Pearl Harbor attack. The Bowfin completed nine successful patrols during WWII, contributing to the Allies’ victory over Japan. Go below and experience life in a WWII era sub, visit the museum filled with thousands of artifacts, and pay your respects to the lost seamen and submarines at the waterfront memorial.

Leaving Pearl Harbor behind, the tour concludes with a drive through Historic Downtown Honolulu. Our guide will share stories about Hawaii’s royal family while pointing out famous landmarks associated with the kingdom’s former rulers including Iolani Palace (built by Hawaii’s last king), Kawaiahao Church, and the statue of King Kamehameha the Great who united the Hawaiian Islands.

The Complete Pearl Harbor Experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse yourself in Oahu’s top attraction. Book Pearl Harbor tour today and make memories that will last forever.

About the Historic Landmark Tour

The excursion begins with a Pearl Harbor tour, where we relive the events that unfolded on that fateful Sunday morning in 1941, when U.S. forces at Pearl Harbor came under attack by Japan – catapulting the United States into World War II.

The USS Arizona Memorial then offers an appropriate setting to reflect on the extensive battle that took place, leading to the loss of life of 1,177 of the ship’s crewmen.

The journey then moves onward to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, where many of those who fought for their country are buried. Finally, you’ll visit Honolulu’s most noteworthy historical landmarks, including Iolani Palace, Kawaiahao Church, the Hawaii State Capitol, and Honolulu City Hall.

Historic Landmark Tour Highlights (* denotes stops made)

  • “Road to War” and “Attack” Exhibit Galleries – These galleries located at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center display personal memorabilia, dramatic photographs, artifacts of the battle, and so much more.
  • USS Arizona Memorial* – A must see for all visitors.  The Memorial marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 crew and built over the sunken battleship USS Arizona, killed on December 7, 1941.  The attack on Pearl Harbor led to the United States’ involvement in World War II.  The Memorial was built in 1962 and visited by over 2 million people annually.  A navy boat shuttle ride brings you to the USS Arizona Memorial and due to limited capacity, there may be days that the shuttle boat tickets sell out or bad weather prohibits the shuttle from operating.
  • National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl – This beautifully maintained cemetery at Punchbowl is a memorial to honor the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces and those who gave up their lives in the line of duty. This is also the final resting place of Ellison Onizuka, the first astronaut from Hawaii, who was in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
  • Hawaii State Capitol Grounds – Includes the Father Damien Statue – a tribute to the Roman Catholic priest who died after 16 years of serving leprosy patients – the Eternal Flame, the Korean Vietnam War Memorial, and the Liberty Bell.
  • Iolani Palace – This majestic structure was the official residence of Hawaii’s last reigning monarch and is the only royal palace in the United States. It features American Florentine architecture seen nowhere else in the world.
  • King Kamehameha Statue – One of Hawaii’s prominent chiefs who united the Hawaiian Islands.
  • Honolulu City Hall – Known as Honolulu Hale, the city hall is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the site of the chambers of the Mayor of the City & County of Honolulu and the Honolulu City Council.
  • Kawaiahao Church – One of the oldest standing Christian places of worship in Hawaii, this church is often described as the Westminster Abbey of the Pacific. It was constructed from slabs of coral rock hand-chiseled by Hawaiian divers almost 200 years ago.

Glad we booked this tour. Of course seeing Pearl Harbor was a must coming to Hawaii. I didn't know that the tour also included a tour of the city which was great because we were able to see places that we otherwise wouldn't have seen or known about. Learning some history of the island was really awesome. We loved cousin Lisa!!

Hawaii Tours FAQ

The ideal stay on Oahu can vary, but a common recommendation is about 5 to 7 days. This allows you to explore the island’s major attractions, enjoy some beach time, and get a taste of its unique culture. Of course, the more time you have, the more you can discover!

Oahu is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit for great weather and fewer crowds is typically from mid-April to early June and September to mid-December. These are the shoulder seasons, providing a more relaxed and pleasant experience.

It takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to drive around the entire island if you’re taking the scenic route without many stops. However, exploring the island thoroughly with stops at various attractions will take a full day or more. For reference, our Circle Island Tour lasts around 9 hours.

Guided tours offer you the expertise of local guides who can provide insights, take you to the best spots, and ensure you make the most of your visit. Whether it’s a historical tour, a hiking adventure, or a cultural exploration, guided tours can make your Oahu experience truly memorable.

Among the multitude of tours available on Oahu, the two most iconic and highly sought-after experiences are the Circle Island Tours and Pearl Harbor Tours. These tours have consistently garnered immense popularity among visitors, offering distinct and compelling attractions that captivate the hearts of tourists from around the world.

While several transportation options are available, guided bus tours stand out as the most comfortable and economical means of experiencing all that Hawaii has to offer. Guided bus tours provide an unbeatable combination of comfort, convenience, and affordability. They offer travelers a stress-free and leisurely way to explore Hawaii’s most famous attractions and hidden gems.

For your first visit to Hawaii, Oahu is an ideal choice due to its well-developed infrastructure, making it easy to explore the island. Oahu offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly choices, and is equipped with modern amenities. You can enjoy diverse activities, from relaxing on famous beaches like Waikiki to exploring cultural sites like Pearl Harbor. The island’s culinary scene and cultural experiences are rich and varied, providing a well-rounded introduction to Hawaii’s offerings. Whether you’re interested in relaxation, adventure, or cultural immersion, Oahu has something to offer every traveler.

Hawaii’s weather is characterized by a tropical climate, offering warm temperatures year-round. Coastal areas typically experience temperatures in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit (20s to 30s Celsius) during the day, with relatively mild fluctuations between seasons. Trade winds provide a pleasant breeze, especially in the summer. While Hawaii does have wet and dry seasons, rain showers are common but brief, with the wetter season occurring from November to March. The leeward (west) sides of the islands tend to be drier, while the windward (east) sides receive more rainfall. Overall, Hawaii offers pleasant weather for outdoor activities and beach visits throughout the year.

Choosing the best Hawaiian island to visit depends on your preferences. Oahu is great for first-timers, offering a mix of culture, activities, and infrastructure. Maui is known for its natural beauty, including the Road to Hana and Haleakalā. The Big Island (Hawaii) is perfect for adventure seekers with its volcanoes and diverse landscapes. Kauai is a haven for nature lovers, famous for its lush, pristine scenery. Molokai and Lanai are quieter and less touristy, ideal for a more relaxed experience.

Experience The History

With around 2 million visitors per year, Pearl Harbor is the #1 visitor attraction in the Aloha State. Drawing people from all corners of the globe, the Pearl Harbor experience is fun, educational, and impactful. We invite you to come experience history and appreciate the importance that Hawaii played during a significant time in global history.

The most iconic monument at Pearl Harbor is the USS Arizona Memorial pictured above, and it’s the focal point of this tour. If you are looking for half-day activity with lots of ‘bang for the buck,’ then this tour is the perfect option.

Your morning begins with Waikiki Pickups, Hot Kona Coffee, and delicious purple Taro Donuts from Kamehameha Bakery. Once you arrive to Pearl Harbor, you’ll check out some great museums and see the exclusive documentary before venturing out to the USS Arizona Memorial. The Wall of Names is one of the more sacred aspects of the visit to the USS Arizona Memorial. Here we are able to honor the fallen soldiers who lost their lives to the perils of war during the attack. A moment of silence is observed in during this time to pay respect for those who gave everything for their freedom.

Once you’ve experienced the core of the experience, we’ll take you out for a tour of downtown Honolulu including the Punchbowl National Cemetery and the statue of King Kamehameha the Great.

Spaces are limited, so make your reservation now! The tour returns to Waikiki between 11:30pm–3:00pm depending on time slot.

Tears Of The Arizona

The USS Arizona was bombed and completely sank during the air strike on Pearl Harbor. Because the ship was in the harbor, it's reserves were full and the ship sunk with a full reservoir of fuel and oil. Sculpted by Thomas Gould in Florence, this 18-foot bronze statue of Kamehameha is one of Oahu's most photographed landmarks. The visitor center is the gateway for visitors to expand their knowledge of World War II and the Pacific Theater by visiting neighboring independent historic sites: Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum , Battleship Missouri Memorial , and Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum . Ticketing and tour information for these sites can be found at the Passport to Pearl Harbor Historic Sites page .

The Pearl Harbor Experience

The Pearl Harbor Experience

Pearl Harbor Tours

Pickup: 8:15-9:20 AM

Duration: 5-7.5 hours

12 max (shared tour)

  • Visit Pearl Harbor and its major sites: Arizona Memorial, Missouri battleship, and Bowfin submarine
  • VIP Tour (shared in small group or private) with personal guide to maximize your day
  • Guides are military veterans and local historians to provide more meaning and a richer experience
  • Don't worry about securing limited tickets in advance, and skip the lines too
  • Includes transport from most lodgings and all tickets

Fully experience Pearl Harbor, the site of the monumental event that changed the course of history. From start to finish, you will be in excellent hands on this VIP tour, which is run by a small business owned and operated by a Hawaiian veteran. You will learn fascinating stories and facts about the infamous surprise attack on this naval base and the aftermath, including insider information from veterans actively involved in Oahu’s military community. Rather than simply being dropped off and having to fend for yourself like most of the other “tours”, you will be escorted the entire time in a small group to get the most out of your time.

After pick-up from your lodging, you’ll efficiently be ushered through the often crowded admission process. You’ll skip the lines for the public shuttle and be escorted via your tour van across the Ford Island Bridge to explore the USS Missouri ("Mighty Mo"), which was the last American battleship ever built and was the site of Japan’s official surrender to end World War II.

You'll return via van to the main entrance for a moving film about the Pearl Harbor attack and a boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial at the site of the sunken battleship (still visible) where over 1,100 sailors lost their lives. You will disembark and spend some time on the memorial for reflection on this hallowed ground. Tickets are secured in advance so you do not have to wait in line to try your luck with limited standby tickets. Lastly is a visit aboard the USS Bowfin, where you will get a firsthand feel for what it was like to live and fight underwater during WWII on this legendary submarine.

Total tour duration is approximately 6-7.5 hours including optional transport, or about 5 hours at the Pearl Harbor sites.

If you prefer a shorter amount of time at Pearl Harbor , mostly for the Arizona Memorial, a lower price point, or less walking (see physical exertion FAQ below), consider our other Pearl Harbor Tours .

TravelShack's Choice

Why this tour is recommended over others.

  • Unlike most other “tours”, this is not just an overpriced taxi service; you will not just be dropped off at Pearl Harbor and then picked up at the end. These other services often lead to not pacing oneself properly, resulting in either killing hours waiting for pick-up or missing key sites due to time being up. This is a Deluxe tour to maximize your experience across the multiple sites. You will get an expert guide who will both bring the history alive and handle all the details to optimize your visit.
  • Guides are military veterans (see FAQ below for more details) and passionate historians
  • Shared tour is a small group (4-12); other “tours” can be 20-30+
  • The efficiency of this VIP tour, along with it running only once a day and that tickets have already been secured in advance, means it doesn’t start so early and there is no risk of being turned away due to Pearl Harbor admission being sold out
  • All-inclusive, including & guaranteeing all tickets so you don't have to waste time waiting in line for them, especially for the Arizona Memorial which has very limited standby tickets; other tours may not include tickets, which means paying out of pocket ~$60/adult for the Missouri & Bowfin tickets alone

Key Details

  • Local expert guide for most of day
  • Guaranteed Arizona Memorial tickets
  • All admission/ticket fees (e.g., Missouri, Bowfin)
  • Door-to-door transport (see more details below)

Distance from Main Areas to Pearl Harbor 30-45 min from Waikiki 30 min from Ko Olina

Waikiki / Honolulu Lodgings: For either the Shared or Private tours, there are free pickups from virtually all lodgings (8:30-9 am, drop-off 3:30-4 pm). The most common lodgings can be selected from the drop-down list at checkout.

Honolulu Airport : If flying in just for the day from another island, you can be picked up at the Honolulu airport at 9:15 am and dropped off 3:30-4 pm; we recommend flying in by 8:45 am and flying out after 5:30 pm.

Cruise Ships : The tour picks up at the cruise terminals/piers at 9 am and drops off around 4 pm. However, exceptions with timing may be possible, including for shared tours; for example, currently in 2024, April 12, Sept 22, Sept 30 are already designated for Carnival Miracle excursions (9:45 - 4:30), but if they are no longer available, please contact us to be put on the waitlist. For other cruise ships that don't fit the normal tour schedule, you can contact us to inquire.

Ko Olina / Kapolei / Ewa Beach Lodgings  (e.g., Aulani Disney, Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club): For the Shared tour, you would meet at Pearl Harbor at 9:20 am (please select "Pearl Harbor" during checkout for pickup); it's a 15-30 minute drive with free parking, or Uber/Lyft are available. Alternatively, you can book a Private tour to include round-trip transportation from your lodging.

Other:  If you're staying elsewhere (e.g., North Shore, East Oahu, Waianae) or just prefer the flexibility and skipping other pickups/dropoffs, you can meet at Pearl Harbor (9:20 am, end around 3-3:30 pm, free parking). Simply select "Pearl Harbor" as the pickup location at checkout. Note: there is no change in price by meeting at Pearl Harbor. Private tours may be able to include transportation from other locations (with or without a surcharge, depending on distance from Pearl Harbor); you can  contact us  to inquire.

For larger groups, there may be some flexibility with pickup times, so please contact us to inquire.

Although it is open to the public (note: various admission fees apply), the benefits of visiting Pearl Harbor as part of this tour versus on your own include:

  • Round-trip transportation (optional)
  • Expedited check-in process and guaranteed access to Arizona Memorial. The tour has secured limited advance tickets set aside for commercial tours for visiting the Arizona Memorial (accessible only by boat). Advance tickets sell out online quickly; you generally need to be at your computer at a certain hour in advance. Or you can get same-day tickets by waiting in line once you arrive (7 am recommended, as tickets often sell out). With the tour, you enter right away, avoiding wait times and hassle. For the Missouri and Bowfin, although tickets are not as limited, there is no wasted time securing tickets by taking this tour.
  • Efficient tour of the sites so you have an informative and rewarding time without needing to spend more time than needed on your precious vacation day
  • Separate public shuttle to USS Missouri often has lines of 30-45 minutes; with this tour, you are transported with no wait.
  • Extensive historical and military context provided by knowledgeable guides, who are ex-military (see FAQ below for more details). The guide is with you for most of the time at Pearl Harbor (this is not just a drop-off/pick-up service).
  • The Missouri is large and easily overwhelming, and many visiting on their own struggle to know where to go and what to look for. Your guide will efficiently take you to the most interesting places and explain what you're seeing.

Shared Tour

The standard shared tour takes up to 12 people, although it's often less (as little as 4) except during peak periods.

For the Shared Tour, pricing is: $226 for age 13+ $210 for age 2-12 Free for age 1 & younger

For those with physical limitations or very young children , a private tour is recommended. Further details in the FAQ below.

If none of the dates in our calendar work for you, check out our other Pearl Harbor Tour that includes a sightseeing tour around Oahu for the day (note: it includes the Arizona Memorial but not the Missouri or Bowfin). Or you can email us with your party size and all possible dates, and we may have flexibility or we can at least put you on the waitlist. The online cut-off for booking a tour the next day is mid-afternoon, but it's possible we may still be able to accommodate after that time if no other dates work for you.

Private Tour

Private tour availability in our online calendar can be quite limited within 1-2 months. If no available dates work for you, please email us , as there often is flexibility for private tours. Private tour availability is also not shown online within 48 hours, so please contact us if last-minute.

For parties of 6 or less, the price of a private tour is $1599 + tax. Transportation is usually in a large luxury SUV. Note: most of the tour is outside of the vehicle.

For parties of 7-14, it is $2,260 + tax for up to 10 people, then $199 per additional person up to 14. Transportation is in a 14-passenger tour van.

For parties above 14 or if there is no available date that works for you, please contact us .

For private parties picked up in Waikiki, a short tour by van of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl Crater is also included (but optional).

  • Looking for a shorter tour of Pearl Harbor, mainly focused on the Arizona Memorial? Check out our Circle Island with Pearl Harbor Tour  or  Pearl Harbor & Honolulu City Tour  (and compare all 3 tours here ).
  • If you have more than one day to spare, we recommend complimenting this tour with a full day Circle Island Tour . It's a similar premium small group tour (note: you'll likely get a different guide).
  • Not able to do an available day ? Check out our other Pearl Harbor tours here . Or, you can contact us with the number of people, the dates that would work for you, and your lodging, and we may be able to open up a tour for you, or at least put you on the waitlist.
  • In the booking calendar for the shared tour, there may be some dates that require booking a minimum of 4 spots , especially within the next couple of weeks. This is because the tour requires a minimum of 4 paid seats to go out at the shared tour price. If you have 4 or more, please make sure to input the number of people in order to see these available dates. If you have less than 4, these dates won't show, or you can book 4 spots and make a note at checkout with the size of your party and that you would like to be charged only for your party if others sign up for that tour to meet the 4 minimum, although it may just go out with your group as a heavily discounted private (having paid for 4 seats). Or alternatively you can contact us and we can keep you posted if we get another booking to allow you to book only your exact number of people on the shared tour.

Guidebook Reviews

Lonely Planet guidebook:

Pearl Harbor has a resonance for all Americans. The site is accessible, evocative, and moving. It’s the top site for visitors to Hawaii.

The USS Arizona doesn't tell the only story. With the nearby USS Bowfin and USS Missouri, together they represent the beginning, middle, and end of the war. Dedicate at least a day.

Fodor's guidebook:

Pearl Harbor: Top Reasons to Go to Oahu. A sobering, don’t miss sight.

Same-day tickets can disappear within an hour [if not part of tour]

Moon guidebook:

The Pearl Harbor Historic Sites are a must-see to grasp.

On a busy day, be prepared to wait several hours [if not part of tour]

Oahu Revealed guidebook:

The USS Arizona Memorial is the single most popular visitor attraction on Oahu and a must-do for good reason, but all three Navy vessels are worth your time. The Arizona is the most somber, the Missouri the most impressive in its scale, and the Bowfin the most interesting for observing what it must have been like to live in a submerged vessel.

Parking can be difficult at peak times.

How much time is spent at each site?

The tour is at Pearl Harbor for approximately 5 hours (total tour time is 6-7.5 hours when lodging pick-up/transport is included). About 2 hours is at the USS Missouri, 1 hour for the Arizona Memorial visit, and 30-60 minutes at the USS Bowfin. In addition, there is 30-60 minutes for lunch, the Arizona Memorial film (in a large theater), and some independent time to browse additional exhibits and the gift shop. Please note that this may vary a bit based on the guide’s discretion that day, as well as the pace of the group. The order of the sites may change as well, especially since the Arizona Memorial boat ride ticket time often varies.

Are the guides all military veterans?

Most tours will have a military veteran as a guide, having served in recent decades. The only day that it is not guaranteed (but still likely) is on Wednesday; if booking a Wednesday, feel free to make a note that a veteran guide is important to you and we can contact you if it's not possible. On rare occasions when it is not a veteran, it will still be a knowledgeable and highly rated guide.

This tour is not only an opportunity to support a veteran-owned business and local veterans, but it’s also the best way to get the most out of the experience with guides who have a special connection to the military and local community.

For example, a main guide is Luis. He is 5th generation born in Hawaii, and he served in the Navy on the USS Maryland as well as in Washington D.C. He completed his Bachelor's Degree in Hawaii focused on U.S. History and is passionate about sharing military and Hawaii history and local culture.

Another guide is Emerson. He grew up near Pearl Harbor and also attended university nearby. He was in the United States Air Force, including as a F-22 raptor "Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist, and he has worked at Pearl Harbor in numerous capacities sharing its history and educating visitors.

Can I be picked up or dropped off at the airport?

Yes, specifically for those flying in from a neighboring island for the day. Please make sure to arrive in time for pick-up at 9:15 am and depart after being dropped off around 3:30-4 pm (although if doing private tour, there may be some flexibility with timing). Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Airlines both have multiple daily flights from the other islands. We recommend booking a flight arriving by 8:30-45 am and departing after 5 pm, ideally 5:30 pm or later, or if a flight to outside Hawaii then even later. Please see FAQ below about luggage. You can also be dropped off elsewhere in Honolulu and Waikiki and transport yourself to the airport on your own later.

Both the Shared and Private tours work with airport pickups/dropoffs.

Alternatively, especially if it's challenging to align the flight and tour times exactly, you may want to spend more time at Pearl Harbor outside the tour (e.g., gift shops / visitor center), rather than kill time at the airport. Pearl Harbor is less than 10 minutes from the airport. You can arrive at Pearl Harbor before the tour (meeting tour at 9:20 am) and/or leave later than the tour (which concludes at Pearl Harbor 3-3:30 pm). Transportation options from/to airport include Lyft and Uber and are around $20-25.

Can I be picked up or dropped off at the cruise ship pier?

Yes. Please note pick-up is 9 am and drop-off 3:30-4 pm at the Honolulu cruise ship terminals/piers. Please factor in 30-60 minutes to disembark the cruise ship upon docking. Or a private tour may provide more flexibility (see related FAQ).

If you are doing this tour on the same day you start or end your cruise, luggage should not be brought on tour (except possibly if private tour), so you may want to just store at your hotel front desk (note: Waikiki hotels pickup 8:30-8:50 am and drop off 4-4:30 pm).

Some hotels provide a service to drop off your luggage at the cruise terminal for you. For example, the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort have provided such a service for the Pride of America cruise ship; please inquire with these lodgings for details and to confirm this service is still offered.

Can I bring luggage on the tour?

If possible, please book this tour on a date when you don't have to worry about storing luggage.

Due to security restrictions at Pearl Harbor, in general luggage should not be brought on the tour. You can store at the airport , at your hotel (where the tour can drop you off after the tour to retrieve), or at other storage locations .

If you book a private tour, it may be possible to store at Pearl Harbor (fee applies), or the tour could return you to your Honolulu hotel after the tour to quickly pick up your checked bags there and then drop you off at airport (additional charge may apply). For the shared tour, due to additional time for checking in & retrieving bags at Pearl Harbor as well as space constraints on the van, this option is only available for shared tour guests who meet and end the tour at Pearl Harbor so it doesn't take up tour time.

How much physical exertion is on this tour?

Pearl Harbor is generally accessible to all fitness levels and mobility abilities. However, the tour does try to cover a lot of ground in the time allotted, which means quite a bit of walking and being on one's feet. Built-in sitting time at Pearl Harbor only includes the 20 minute film, the boat ride to the Arizona, the van ride to/from Missouri, and ~30 minutes for lunch; the rest is generally on one's feet. Unless a private tour more customized to the group, shared tours usually end up over 5 miles of total walking for the day. Tours are not able to drive guests directly up to the sites, so there is some walking to even just get to a sight.

More specifically, the Bowfin submarine is a bit challenging with steps and narrow spaces, so those with limited mobility may need to sit out that part of the tour (~30-45 minutes).

Parts of the large Missouri battleship also have stairs and narrow spaces, but either the tour can focus on other areas (depending on the makeup of the tour group, and especially if it's a private tour) or split up momentarily if needed.

For the shared tour, it's important that the tour provide the full experience to all other participants. As a general test, it is recommended that shared tour participants be able to walk 300 yards without stopping. If this is not possible, the shared tour may not be a good fit for you. Or otherwise you may have to separate from the group for more frequent rests or to sit out some of the exploration on the Bowfin and Missouri.

Wheelchair participants should book a private tour and must be pushed by someone in their party, not the guide. Parts of the Missouri are wheelchair accessible, and there is even an elevator. No wheelchairs are permitted on the Bowfin.

For those with more limited abilities that are concerned whether the shared tour is a good fit, we recommend booking either a private tour, or one of our other Pearl Harbor Tours  that only includes the easier Arizona portion at Pearl Harbor.

At the time of booking, there is a place at checkout to indicate any physical limitations. The tour does have a passenger weight limit of 320 lbs / 145 kg, primarily due to vehicle constraints.

Is this tour appropriate for wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, or strollers?

Strollers can be accommodated on either tour; collapsible wheelchairs, travel scooters (that break apart), and walkers only on a private tour (note: neither the tour nor Pearl Harbor provides them though). Non-collapsible or unusually large versions are generally not permitted, although feel free to contact us if inquiring about a large private tour and there may be some flexibility.

Strollers are not permitted for the USS Arizona portion of the tour (the film and boat ride); wheelchairs and walkers are fine. There is a place to leave the stroller during this portion, or you can leave in the van. The Bowfin and parts of the Missouri are not suitable for wheelchairs / strollers / etc. due to stairs and narrow spaces.

What vehicles are used?

In most cases, you will be in a modern Ford Transit passenger van designed for 14 passengers (but max of 12 on the shared tour and usually not at full capacity). Comfortable seats, air-conditioned, and large windows. Not a low-ceiling cargo van like some other tour companies. Seating is mostly attached, but individual seats are molded.

If it's a private tour with 6 or less (or in rare cases a smaller shared tour), then you will likely be in a spacious high-end SUV (Chevy Suburban or Ford Expedition), both with 2 back rows, unless you upgrade to a larger private tour (7-14 people) for the Transit. Note: most of the tour does not take place in the vehicle; it's just for pickup/dropoff at lodging (if applicable) and for a short drive within Pearl Harbor and to the National Cemetery at Punchbowl (only private tours with Waikiki lodgings).

What's the plan for lunch?

The guide will provide some fast casual options at Pearl Harbor, which is ordered and paid for by the guest. You will have about 20-30 minutes of free time for lunch.

What is the age minimum?

There is no age minimum. However, children under 4 are not allowed on the USS Bowfin submarine; during this time (~30 minutes), the child and parent(s) can enjoy the acclaimed submarine museum (or if a private tour, the submarine could be skipped altogether).

Hawaii law requires children under age 4 to ride in a child safety seat and children ages 4-7 to ride in a child safety seat or a booster seat. You may bring your own, or please select during checkout for the tour to provide ($20, or included with private tour).

Please consider the length of the tour and the historical nature of it in determining whether this tour is a good fit for your child and that your child won't significantly detract from the experience of any other guests (if non-private tour). The guide does make an effort to engage and customize the tour for any children on the tour. However, in general infants are not recommended since it's a long day with a lot of ground covered and quite a bit of sun exposure (reinforced by reflection off the water); if necessary, a private tour is strongly recommended to minimize impact on other tour guests.

How much time will be without the guide?

The only portion of the tour where the guide will not be with you is for about 1-1.5 hours as you watch a movie about the USS Arizona and take the Navy-operated shuttle boat ride to the Arizona Memorial. Tour guides are prohibited from this portion, which is more focused on somber reflection.

There will also be about 30-45 minutes of free time to get lunch on your own and browse additional exhibits and the gift shop if you'd like.

What is the format at the USS Missouri?

The first 20-30 minutes will be narrated by a public guide on the deck (required), and then your guide will show you other areas of the ship for the next 60-90 minutes, including leading you through the maze of hallways and rooms in the innards of the ship, and provide additional commentary.

Will I be on the same van as others traveling with me if they book separately?

Most likely, but there may be more than one van that goes out on the same day. Therefore, if booking separately, please answer the question at checkout about you being with another party so we can ensure you are on the same van.

Are there restrictions on what I can bring?

Yes, due to strict security measures at Pearl Harbor, which is an active Navy base, Pearl Harbor has a no bag policy. This includes leaving items in the van, since the tour van is used for visiting the USS Missouri in the higher security area of Ford Island and non-permitted items cannot even be stored in the van here.

Specifically, prohibited are any bags that conceal its contents (e.g., purses, backpacks, fanny packs, diaper bags) and glass containers (except baby food jars). Allowed are clutches (with or without straps) and wallets measured no more than 1.5” x 2.25” x 5.5”, clear plastic bags, lightweight plastic shopping bags, and small camera bags. Water bottles / bottled water are permitted, and there are multiple refilling stations and a few places to purchase, as well as water fountains.

If you must bring non-permitted items, they will need to be stored in your own vehicle (if meeting tour at Pearl Harbor) or at the baggage storage facility at Pearl Harbor (fee applies), although this is only allowed on a case-by-case basis for private tours due to logistical issues and should be discussed/approved in advance, such as with the guide's reminder call the night before.

What if I want to spend more time at Pearl Harbor?

This tour has been optimized to get a full and enriching experience at Pearl Harbor, while also not cutting into evening plans, not risk being overwhelming or exhausting, and keeping the price in check. Nevertheless, if you wish to spend more time at Pearl Harbor on the same day as the tour, such as to visit the small Aviation Museum (with additional admission fee), your options are:

1) Extend your time at Pearl Harbor on your own after the tour. The guide can direct you to the Aviation Museum, and once you're done there, there is a free public shuttle back to the entrance. You can choose to just drive to Pearl Harbor to meet at 9:20 am (free parking) that morning so you can then drive away on your own, or you can still be picked up in the morning and then Uber/Lyft/taxi back to your lodging when you're done (about $25-30 to Waikiki).

2) Return on another day on your own.

3) Book a private tour, which can be extended by 2 hours to include the Aviation Museum, with your private expert guide and admission tickets procured by the tour. The additional cost is $405-580 for the small private (6 or less) or $945-1,190 for the large private (7 or more), depending on the exact number of people. If interested, there is an option at checkout to add. Alternatively, as described in #1 above, private tours can also conclude at Pearl Harbor, and you can proceed to do the Aviation Museum on your own.

How long has the tour operator been in business?

The tour operator has been running highly rated private customized tours for groups through high end resorts on Oahu for a decade. Starting in Fall 2018, TravelShack partnered closely with them to develop an optimized standard itinerary and a shared small group tour to allow more people to have a VIP experience, with easy booking through TravelShack. We also offer a private tour option.

Taxes added at checkout

  • 4.712% Hawaii/Oahu sales tax (GET)

Cancellation Policy

  • Refundable until 48 hours prior to the tour time for Shared tours; 72 hours for Private tours with up to 6 people; 1 week for parties of 7+ (possibly longer for larger groups)
  • Any exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis. If members of your party get sick, an Oahu-based doctor's note will be requested.
  • If there is a weather cancellation, you will be contacted to reschedule or receive a full refund.
  • On rare occasion, the National Park Service which operates the boats to the Arizona Memorial may cancel visits to the Memorial due to conditions, such as high winds. If the tour is given enough notice (i.e. before the tour has initiated), you will be informed and given the option to reschedule or cancel if you'd like. However, if there is little notice and the tour has already commenced, there will not be any refunds (including partial) and the tour will be of similar duration with extra time elsewhere.

Restrictions

  • For the shared tour, guests should be able to walk extensively and be on one's feet for most of the day or a total of about 3-4 hours, or otherwise be ok sitting out portions. Wheelchairs/walkers/scooters are only permitted on the private tour. More info can be found in the tour page FAQs.

Oahu Island Tour

Do you have a large group or questions before you book, submit a review, frequently asked questions, what is the baggage policy.

No bags of any size are allowed anywhere at Pearl Harbor. This includes backpacks, camera bags, purses, luggage, and fanny packs must all be left at the baggage storage at the entrance to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. For diaper needs, we suggest parents and caregivers include these baby items in a clear sealable under the stroller seat for clear visibility and access.

Where can I pick up my audio tour headset?

You can pick up your headset for the audio tour near the Information Desk at the Visitors Center.

Can I bring a stroller, wheelchair, or mobility device?

Pearl Harbor is an accessible site, there are no hills, and the paths are mostly flat. Wheelchairs are not available for rent at the park. There are benches placed around the visitor center and there are wheelchair locks on the US Navy navy boats to and from the memorial that sport visitors back and forth to the Memorial.

Motorized mobility devices are welcome at the Visitor Center and on US Navy Vessels, and the USS Arizona Memorial.

Strollers are welcome on site but can only go so far as the USS Arizona Memorial pre-boarding area at the Park Theater. Strollers are not permitted on US Navy vessels or the USS Arizona Memorial, please bring a baby carrier as an alternate option in these areas.

Can I bring food and beverages?

Due to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial's no-bag policy, only bring snacks and water bottles that you can carry. There is a small snack shop on site that carries various sundry snacks and cold beverages as well as restaurants throughout the area. There are water fountains located throughout the park to use or refill water bottles.

What is appropriate dress and attire?

We recommend that all visitors consider this site is for remembrance and reflection of the loss of life in service to the United States, therefore please plan for appropriate dress. Battle dress uniform is not allowed on the memorial, though it is allowed throughout the visitor center and at sites on Ford Island. Military visitors are welcome to wear civilian attire when visiting.

Come prepared with comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet throughout your visit, including a hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen are recommended.

Do most use a tour company and if so, who would you recommend?

We don’t like to be rushed and would be open to spending a night in Oahu returning to Maui at the end of the second day. If we prefer this, would we be on our own or is there a tour company that would assist? We would travel very light using a backpack for essentials, keeping our hotel room on Maui the entire time.

Thanks for any and all advice.

You will also save money overall this way.

Live Aloha,

What area will you be staying in on Maui? Friday traffic on Maui tends to be heavy. There is no specific reason for this but it has become a tradition.

When making your plans try to avoid rush hours in Honolulu.

We fly to Honolulu from Maui quite a bit. We will usually book a later flight home to Maui. If we get everything done early we will go to a kiosk,, print a boarding pass, go thru TSA and walk right up to the Hawaiian Airline help desks. Think they are around gate 17. The desk can rebook you onto an earlier flight , if they have space. This can happen when you have no check in luggage and when an earlier flight has space. They have never charged us any change fee.

Waikiki would be fun for a night. We have found that the hotel prices are very reasonable there.

have fun studying all the Pearl Harbor tours. Make your selection as soon as possible.

Practice Aloha

The Getaways

Oh, forgot to add that you do not need any tour companies!!!

Thanks for the quick replies. All information and options are appreciated. It’s nice to know a tour company isn’t needed, which allows us a bit more flexibility.

Exactly, Jimta. Plus the extra expenses. If they can't add days just follow my previous advice.
