Bon Jovi (formed in 1983) is an American hard rock band known for their arena-filling live shows and instantly recognisable worldwide hit single “Livin’ on a Prayer”, hailing from Sayreville, New Jersey.

Originally comprised of Garden State natives, frontman Jon Bon Jovi, keyboard and backing vocalist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, lead guitarists Richie Sambora, and bassist Alec John Such, the group has remained a fairly solid lineup since its formation. The band began playing around New Jersey, opening for touring bands, which is how they caught the attention of record executive Derek Shulman. He subsequently signed Bon Jovi to Mercury Records and released their debut, self-titled album in January 1984. Peaking at No. 43 on the Billboard 200, the record introduced the band’s huge, dramatic and heavy guitar-driven sound, which resulted in the band opening for the Scorpions in the U.S. and Kiss in Europe.

After a disappointing second album “7800° Farenheit” was released in 1985, Bon Jovi issued their breakthrough album “Slippery When Wet” in August 1986. Holding the top spot of the Billboard 200 for a remarkable eight weeks, the record was led by the No. 1 knockout singles “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer”, turning the group into household names the world over. The group’s 130-show supporting tour became a huge success and earned the band nearly $30,000,000. Building on this success Bon Jovi’s fourth, “New Jersey” once again found the top of the charts aided by the No. 1 singles “Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There for You”. With a reputation as one of the best and most intense touring bands in the world, Bon Jovi set off on a 232 show tour which included a show in the Soviet Union.

The constant cycle of recording and touring began to take its toll on the group and in 1990 Bon Jovi took a hiatus to focus on family and individual pursuits. After a conversation about the longevity of the group in St. Thomas, the members agreed to start making a new album. That new album proved to be “Keep the Faith” released in November 1992. Marked by its mature, thoughtful lyrics, the album was succeeded by the compilation “Cross Road”, which featured the band's most successful single to date, “Always”. Bassist Alec John Such was subsequently fired from the band and unofficially replaced by Hugh McDonald.

Following another huge worldwide tour, Bon Jovi issued their sixth album “These Days” in 1995, followed by “Crush” in 2000, and “Bounce” in 2002. In 2003 the band reworked a number of their biggest hits and compiled them onto the studio album “This Left Feels Right” in November. Prior to the arrival of their 10th studio album, “Have a Nice Day” in 2005, Bon Jovi was bestowed with the Award for Merit at the American Music Awards in 2003. Playing to nearly two million fans the world over, the “Have a Nice Day” Tour grossed nearly $200 million, following close behind successful tour by The Rolling Stones and Madonna.

The full-length “Lost Highway” followed in June 2007, led by the singles “(You Want to) Make a Memory” and “Lost Highway”. Following the subsequent tour, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2009, the same year they released their 12th studio album, “The Circle”.

funny because in google before you click to this site. It says

The actual site It states there are

NO Bon Jovi yours coming up.So why are they Conradicting themselves here on Song kicks ????. the only

thing is Jon Bon Jovi has only been

Playing at small Venues. Along with the band that is backing him up "kings of suburbia" He hasn't done anything with the Bond Jovi

band members since he recorded a

Shot concert on April 29,2021 for

Druve-Ins and Theaters. Now the only thing he is doing is for a vacation company called "RUNAWAY TOURS" for Halloween And it is only 2 nights He is gonna do a short gig and then take pictures and maybe answer some questions there's some questions for a couple of nights this is mainly just a vacation package to Miami, Florida That is outrageously expensive Is nothing like a tour concert. This thing hes doing now is a couple of $1000 plus And you have to pay for your plane fare and your food. And as for the Night of 29th and 30th And the 31st of October. But the hotel is only for 2 nights. And they still haven't booked up completely. The 1st one they did a few months ago booked up really fast for all that's for all 3 of the prices prices but this time they're not booking everything up. Most people can't afford several $1000.

I've been going to Bon Jovi gigs in UK since 1986. I was 15, already had both their previous albums. First UK tour, they played a tiny local theatre, which was half empty as they were barely known over here back then! I've been to every UK tour since, except one..even saw them at Donnington "Monsters of Rock", which is now Download. Manchester, Stoke City Stadium, Coventry; I've loved every concert, but I have to say, Coventry is a lousy venue!! It's a nightmare to get to and the lack of parking is a complete ball ache. PLEASE do more dates at Manchester and replace Coventry with the Stadium in Stoke, now called The BET 365 Stadium and is home to Stoke City fc, so same size as Coventry. Loads of parking, and not clogging up motorway slip roads to get there either. Other than that, cannot fault ANY concet I've seen; Jon is so professional. 2 concerts, on 2 consecutive tours, it belted it down with rain and they carried on, towelling off inbetween. Jon even laughed while singing the line "til the heavens burst" during "Always" Phil X is a great guitarist too. I've seen Kiss, Halestorm, Def Leppard, TOTO, Tina Turner, Guns n Roses, plus many more and Bon Jovi will always be top of my list. Lifelong fan, 37 years on from my first concert and 39 yeats since my first album "Bon Jovi". Keep on rocking!

Bon Jovi remains, to this day, a musical icon. The band is one of the most successful and famous rock bands of all time and, judging on the ridiculously large crowd that excitedly came to see the band perform live, they will never, ever lose their star. Years after their formation in 1983, Bon Jovi’s hits are still classics that everyone, young and old, can’t fail to recognise. And this is precisely why it was so brilliant to watch them perform live, in a packed out arena of thousands of fans. The energy was out of this world, and the fans were so excited that they could barely contain themselves. Even the sound check guy got an ear deafening scream when he appeared on stage. When Jon Bon Jovi himself appeared, the world exploded. Proving that he still got it, Jon Bon Jovi put his famous vocals to test with a big opener: ‘Always’. The crowd went wild. We were treated to all the hits, spanning all the decades. ‘Who Says You Can’t Go Home’ was a notable one, with the whole crowd singing along, but it was ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ that, of course, brought the house down.

I Love Bonjovi!!!Have been a fan since 1984, seen them 9 times in concert, have all their music old and new, 3 shows I went to see them by myself, this show I went by myself, and as always it was awesome!!!! Jon is amazing, I loved what he did when he quizzed the audience about the radio station, lol I just can't get over that, as any woman I wish that was me lol, they always put on a great performance, and make you feel good, I also loved when he would turn to the back of the stage and kick box into the video at the end of the song he did this 3 times, I give them 10 stars on this show, Philx was really good, I could see how much he really enjoys what he is doing, the stage was phenomenal, with the slinky lights, and how this house is not for sale picture of the album was included awesome!!!! I also have to say how much I missed seeing Richie, but, they're performance proved they've moved on, got it together and Jon Bonjovi, Tico, and David, I remember you guys in your 20's,30's,40's, I just can't believe its been over 30 years, you guys are amazing!!

Some bands never lose their appeal due to the fact their hit singles still seem relevant and able to play on radios years later. They turn from songs into much loved anthems and are passed down between families and friends. New Jersey glam rock outfit Bon Jovi definitely sit within this category thanks to their runaway success in the 80s.

Years later they are still packing out arenas with fans old and new who are all enthusiastic and ready to bellow along to those recognisable choruses. Although it is over thirty years since the band first formed, all the musicians remain so lively and passionate onstage most noticeably Jon himself who conducts his crowd like a pastor addressing his faithful church commune. He preaches, they agree although there are no hallelujahs just great rock choruses on the likes of 'Always' and 'Bad Medicine'. They leave stage in a barrage of lights and guitar riffs yet the crowd knows they will be returning for the synonymous 'Livin' On A Prayer' which unites the thousand strong audience in one almighty singalong.

Bon Jovi has been rocking it around the world since the eighties and hasn't given up yet.

They've been touring huge arenas for years and even in their ripe old age they still manage to put on over a two hour long performance that will leave you breathless and will have you singing along and dancing all night to the hits from Slippery When Wet all the way up to their latest album What about Now.

They'll make you feel like you've been time warped to the land of neon t-shirts and big hair! You'll want to go bust out your members only jacket and flock of seagulls haircut after you see them. Bringing back a blast from the past you'll be able to see the hits like "Wanted Dead or Alive" and "Living on a Prayer" just like they were in the eighties.

Bon Jovi can still hit every note perfectly and does it with a flair that only he can bring. Richie Sambora never misses a note in any of his solos and can still rock out with the best of them even going as far as doing a ten minute long guitar solo in the middle of their set.

We paid for general admission seating so we couldn't get anywhere near the stage. The screen would have been fine, but the sound system was horrible and we could barely hear him. From what we did hear, the sound was entirely muffled.

In addition, people smoked all around us and there was no fresh air. Our 10 and 8 year old boys were miserable. There were a lot of people complaining but no one from Dick's Sporting Goods was there. There were only volunteers and no one knew how to address the issue. We decided to leave after 15 minutes of the music starting. And speaking of the music starting, he started 2 1/2 hours late.

It was the worst concert I've ever experienced. And not only did we put $280 for four tickets, we paid for a hotel room so we could go to the concert.

My first concert was 95 wembley stadium. Ab absolutely mega l cant explain to people just how mega it was you wouldn't be able to understand or appreciate it unless you ate a fan of theirs. It was just electric. I was so excited it was Wembley stadium.l had never been anywhere as big as that. I remember going to the seats the sound of the music booming out. I think it was vanhalen jump.l was so excited l got to a bit where you could stand and l looked over the bars and felt as though l was going to fall into the crowd. I felt like l was walking on air and no l hadn't been drinking.it was just amazing l went with my mum who has now passed away. A memory l will hold in my heart forever.

Fortunate enough to be in a hospitality box, with a very good (close) view.

The biggest issue, was the terribly poor sound quality. I don't know if this was because of where our box was (to the side) or whether the sound was generally very poor.

when he spoke, we could not make out a single word he said.

again, when he sang, were it not for us knowing the words to his most famous songs, we would not have had a clue what he was singing.

visually, excellent, atmosphere was tremendous, but the sound was terrible.

The new album announcement coincides with today’s SXSW premiere of Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , a four-part documentary that will arrive on Hulu in April.

Jon Bon Jovi, Forever Man

He endured vocal-cord surgery, his hair is grayer, and he doesn’t move like he used to, but Bon Jovi has a new album, Forever, dropping in summer, and he’s now more Bon Jovi than ever.

JON BON JOVI is not happy with me. “You’re missing marks all over the place,” he says in his living room. He's responding to my paraphrasing a quote about the vapidness of the Hollywood lifestyle from one of his old interviews and what turned out to be an incorrect assertion I mentioned about a separate historic building that used to be on the property. His assistant told me the foundation of that structure had to be removed, and Bon Jovi infers I’m insinuating that there was once something wrong with his French neoclassical mansion, built from scratch down the Jersey shore in the late '90s. He will later point out a framed photo illustration of a home growing out of a very sturdy tree trunk—the art for the 2016 album This House Is Not for Sale —seemingly to underline the metaphor: We’re on stable ground here, thank you very much.

Very stable: Bon Jovi—the group, though also the Jon—has grossed more than $1.3 billion in tour revenue and sold more than 120 million copies of 15 albums (soon to be 16, with June’s forthcoming Forever ). The hard-pop-rock group has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with a Grammy-winning oeuvre whose subject matter spans the goings-on at strip clubs and the practical repercussions of labor disputes. As an individual, Bon Jovi released two albums and had a brief but hunky acting career in the late ’90s and early ’00s that he says was, like Madonna’s and David Bowie’s, hamstrung by his unwillingness to give up music. Bon Jovi has been honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Garden State Parkway, where the Jon Bon Jovi Service Area (exit 124) features a Sbarro and a hologram of JBJ talking about pork roll. His band’s formation, ascent, and dominance are documented—alongside his 2022 tour-halting vocal-cord issues—in the four-part Hulu documentary Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, premiering April 26. Series director Gotham Chopra sums up the sexy workingman appeal by quoting his cousins in India: “Bon Jovi had this crazy hair, fast cars, and ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ … Bon Jovi was America.”

preview for Jon Bon Jovi | Gym & Fridge Tour | Men's Health

Bon Jovi is speaking to me in late March to promote the docuseries but seems to be having second thoughts. “I’m scared of this interview,” he says. He squints in what appears to be annoyance under bangs that have remained resplendent over his 41 years as the frontman of his eponymous band. Bon Jovi is sitting catty-corner to the deep sofa I’m on, a vast proxemic space for an intimate conversation between two people in one of their homes. He seems both relaxed in his dominant position—his wide-legged, foot-planted posture in a cream armchair conjures the Lincoln Memorial, if the president were wearing jeans and a T-shirt—and emotionally coiled. When we’re on a topic the 62-year-old is comfortable with, like his charitable work or family, Bon Jovi opens the large hair clip he’s holding and slowly releases it, sometimes attaching the claw to his formidable triceps. When we get to subjects he likes less, such as questions that don’t jibe with his own self-analysis, he lets the clip snap shut in his hand.

He says in the doc and echoes to me, “By 40 you start to measure, Did you accomplish what you set out to do? By 50 you start to think about a legacy. By 60, I think as the Chinese proverb says, it’s basically, You are the man you were meant to be.” The statement implies acceptance—especially when he tells me, “Now whether it’s a good man, a bad man, a spiritual man, not a spiritual man, a fulfilled man, whatever”—but any aberrance in my interpretation from his own is met with irritation.

The mark is missed again when Bon Jovi talks about his love of American history and “obsession” with Benjamin Franklin, whom he calls “the brains behind the brains.” Is that how Bon Jovi thinks about behind-the-scenes people like the band’s longtime producer Obie O’Brien and Desmond Child, cowriter of many of the band’s biggest songs? “Why would you say that?” Bon Jovi says, staring at me. Snap.

jon bon jovi

He has a different analogy: “Henry Ford didn’t build the car. He came up with the idea.” As for the non-eponymous members of Bon Jovi, “Everyone was a great contributor along the way, for sure.” In other words, at the Bon Jovi factory, Jon is Henry Ford; the others are on the assembly line. His collaborators agree. Child—who named Bon Jovi godparent to his kids and is appropriately proud of cowriting “Livin’ on a Prayer,” which he calls “the national anthem of New Jersey”—says, “the graciousness of Jon Bon Jovi is allowing us to be part of the circle.” Chopra says Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan told him, “Jon’s like the captain of the ship, and I’m in cabin 37C. I go where he goes.”

This is a man who was described to me via email as a “perfectionist” by his friend Tom Brady, which is a little like Elon Musk calling someone “very online.” Bon Jovi uses Brady’s TB12 workout method, and his trainer Felicia told me she was dispatched to exercise, massage, and acupuncture Bon Jovi around the world after he tried to hire Brady’s own personal trainer and was told that guy already had a job. These days, he trains with Felicia first thing in the morning, five to six times a week. He used to do a lot of heavy weight lifting (a high-impact workout) and running (hard on the knees). But after a career’s worth of occupational injuries (shoulder, calf, plantar fasciitis, meniscus tears), he now prizes pliability, abetted by stretching and resistance bands. It keeps him performing to his exacting professional standards, while maintaining a daily tennis habit. "If I could be on the seniors handicap division of professional tennis,” he says, “that's my aspiration."

To have a five-decade run leading one of the most successful bands in the world doesn’t happen by accident; Bon Jovi has described himself as a “benevolent dictator.” “Jon always wants to give everyone the best experience,” Brady says. “He has always been into taking care of himself, because he’s a performer and he never wants to let anyone down.” If his prickliness seems to be at odds with making people feel good, it might just be Bon Jovi’s brusque way of indicating that someone isn’t meeting the standards he holds himself to. A perfect outcome doesn’t have to come from a perfect process, as he tells me during our less-than-seamless conversation.

But at this point in Bon Jovi’s life, “push[ing] himself to the limits,” as Brady says, and asserting control—of himself, of the way people perceive him—cannot change the inevitable entropy of the human body or the added strain from this many years of being a musical icon, the way he’s done it. It can’t make new his vocal cord, as small as a thumbnail, which Bon Jovi says “runs the economy.”

There is a scene in the docuseries in which Bon Jovi expresses awe that he “used to run around these things—stages—like a motherfucker. Showboating fucker," he says. "One of the best there ever was. Now the champ is tired.” When it’s suggested that means he fatigues more easily than he did decades ago, Bon Jovi curtly says, “No. I had a lot of energy. I was 25 and 30 years old. I wouldn’t want to run around the stage in that manner now.” That sounds like making a virtue of necessity, but in person his body—more than twice the age of that kid’s but still lithe from the Brady regimen—reveals no visible physical limitations, even in the gym.

To illustrate his point, Bon Jovi begins the setup of a joke about a young bull and an older bull deciding how fast to go down a hill. (He judiciously decides not to tell it, but basically the younger bull suggests they run down and mate with a cow. The older one says instead they should walk and have sex with all the cows.) Bon Jovi says of the bull analogy, “The idea is that with age comes experience and with experience comes the opportunity to just do things differently. Still the same outcome but just differently.” He says he went to Tony Bennett’s last show, less than a year before the singer died of Alzheimer’s at 96. He “still hit the high notes,” Bon Jovi says. The possibility of being that kind of exception seems tantalizing, even with the daunting reality that Bon Jovi is 33 years away from that age and trying to rebuild to touring based on the body and voice he has, not the body and voice he used to have.

The docuseries is a mirror of how we all deal with becoming our older, actual selves when it also matters what our past iterations mean about us. Whatever Bon Jovi’s buddy Bruce Springsteen says, it’s actually fine to hold on to glory days, even if we don’t want to think of it that way. It’s also not surprising someone whose days were as glorious as Bon Jovi’s still seeks transcendence from earthly life, even if the music that created his success revels in it. The chorus of the band’s new song “Legendary” insists, “Got what I want ’cause I got what I need, got a fistful of friends that’ll stand up for me, right where I am is where I wanna be.”

jon bon jovi

There’s an old interview in which a young Bon Jovi discusses the “danger” of becoming a heritage act like the E Street Band or the Rolling Stones, and he clarifies to me what happens when your peak—by the standards of actuarial tables and the Billboard Hot 100 list—is decades behind you. “You can’t eventually compete with this year’s model of the top pop act,” he says. “But as a legacy band like the Rolling Stones and the E Street Band, you’re going to sell out every night, and you’re going to play to a certain crowd with the hopes that you’re going to attract a younger crowd based on people telling people.… I’m not chasing pop radio. I can’t! I’m too old.”

When I try to pin Bon Jovi down on the kind of man he is , now that he is who he’s meant to be, according to his proverb, he says he’s “a work in progress.” While this could be a time to enjoy what he’s built—and he does say with evident sincerity that he knows he is “incredibly blessed, beyond comprehension”—Bon Jovi is clearly still chasing something . Though we go many conversational rounds where he pushes back on the idea of desiring validation or specific markers of relevance, he still burns to create things that make them come. “By happenstance,” he tells me, as if writing a successful song was an accident and not a goal, “Legendary”—that ode to appreciating the mundanity of ordinary life—“is fucking exploding. We’re on Hot AC Radio. I mean, that’s where they play J-Lo and Ice Spice for goodness’ sake. And it’s exploding. So go figure. But hooray for us. We did it again.”

THANK YOU, GOODNIGHT, is a new approach to attempting Bon Jovian perfection again. For the project, he personally approached Chopra, who cofounded the production company Religion of Sports with Brady and Michael Strahan. Bon Jovi says of the Emmy-winning filmmaker, “I felt his relation to sport [and] his relation to spirituality were two things that I could connect with, based on what his father does.” (Chopra’s father is Deepak, the alternative-medicine advocate.) Chopra says he explained soon after he and Bon Jovi met in February 2022, “Hey, someday Men’s Health is going to do an article on this. If you’re a producer, man, and if your hands are all over this, it’s going to be a vanity piece. That’s what it’s going to be, whether it is or not … that’s just how these things get framed.” So Bon Jovi forewent final cut and is not a credited producer. “He’s very smart,” Chopra says of Bon Jovi and his understanding of why it benefitted him to not overtly interfere with the filmmaking process. “There’s a reason he’s not only been a prolific artist but a prolific businessperson.”

Bon Jovi says he gave Chopra access to his life and the people in (and formerly in) it with independence because “there was no need for a puff piece at this point in my life.” It’s also probably safe to assume that because Thank You was produced by his friend Brady’s Religion of Sports, there wasn’t much risk it would be unflattering to him.

There are dissenting opinions represented in the series. Along with Bon Jovi’s former manager Doc McGhee—who acts exactly like you’d think a man named Doc who managed Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe in the 1980s would, complete with drug smuggling—the documentary features ex-guitarist Richie Sambora, whom Bon Jovi describes in the docuseries as his “perfect foil” and was probably as close to a counterpart as it’s possible for a non–Bon Jovi member of Bon Jovi to get. In archival footage, Sambora describes the challenge of serving at the pleasure of Jon Bon Jovi. “See, in Bon Jovi, even when I write with Jon, I write for Jon to be able to sing what he needs to be able to sing,” he says. Sambora also shares the story of being fired from the group. (Recollections vary: Bon Jovi and other members of the band point to Sambora’s substance abuse and the fact that he didn’t show up for songwriting sessions or a show, while Sambora says, “Jon got in a strange mood about time” and pins his own absence on caring for his daughter during ex-wife Heather Locklear’s mental-health issues.)

The historic retelling of the band is juxtaposed with the 2022 tour they were about to embark on. When Chopra suggested that structure, he says he wasn’t aware of the extent of Bon Jovi’s vocal issues. Bon Jovi admits, “There was once or twice where I said, ‘Get out of the room’” when he was struggling. Chopra says the singer reminds him of the punctilious Kobe Bryant, who was also the subject of a Chopra documentary. “I knew early on he can be combative,” Chopra says of Bon Jovi, “so you have to engage him in other ways. Like, not get into fights with him, because if you do, he’s not gonna want to lose.” Though the documentary vividly captures Bon Jovi’s drive and meticulousness, his pugnaciousness isn’t a presence.

During the monthlong tour, Bon Jovi’s vocal quality suffered to the point where his wife, Dorothea, intervened. The couple have known each other since high school and will have been married, as of April 29, for 35 years. Their relationship endured the kind of touring mishegoss that inspired the album title Slippery When Wet ; in the docuseries, Sambora says, “we looked better than half the girls we ended up with” on the first tour, which Bon Jovi calls “the American wet dream.”

max muscle at 50

When Dorothea is the topic of conversation—her love of RuPaul’s Drag Race, her fourth-degree black belt in karate—Bon Jovi visibly relaxes. Whereas other smiles flashed during the conversation feel like warning signs, the Dorothea grins are warm. We’re not fighting anymore; we are in agreement that she is very, very cool. Chopra says that Dorothea served as an unofficial fact-checker during production, anchoring her husband’s memories to context. As one of the few participants outside of Bon Jovi’s professional world and band hierarchy, her onscreen presence is similarly grounding. You see Bon Jovi when he’s in his 20s and the most beautiful person alive, with all the hair and all the women and all the crazy stories … then there’s Dorothea, who feels so solid and real. (It should be said that Dorothea was—and, like her husband, remains—a fox.) “I finally needed a higher high,” Bon Jovi says in the docuseries of why he eloped with Dorothea in Las Vegas in 1989 after six years of touring with the band. There’s footage of them taking a motorcycle trip on which Dorothea says the rule was they could stay only in motels that cost less than $30 a night. It was her idea to start the JBJ Soul Kitchen, a pay-what-you-can restaurant that has four locations in New Jersey . When I meet her, she’s leaning on a doorframe in ankle-high slippers and plotting about how to get a friend and local recipient of a portion of a winning billion-dollar lottery ticket to donate money to the charity.

But the tour was challenging for her husband. Even normally friendly local papers were publishing brutal reviews. “Sunday’s show delivered pretty much everything you’d want from a Bon Jovi concert with one major exception—some shockingly poor vocals from Jon Bon Jovi,” wrote the St. Paul Pioneer Press of their April 3 show. “One can’t help but wonder why no one in the Bon Jovi organization sat the guy down for an honest chat. I guess it’s because he’s the boss and no one wants to cross him?” After a performance in Nashville a few weeks later—sponsored by Hampton Water, Bon Jovi’s rosé collaboration with one of his four children—Bon Jovi came backstage and assessed the show for Dorothea. “That was pretty good,” he said, scoring it in the “high 80s.” He says she responded, “No.” Chopra says, “Dorothea is probably the one person who both has the perspective but also just the balls to say that to him.” (“I don’t need my wife to tell me how great I am,” Bon Jovi says pointedly, after I mention it would be difficult for me to hear from my spouse that I wasn’t doing a good job.)

“It sucked,” he says. It sucked to stop the tour. It sucked that his wife had to disabuse him of the idea that he was performing well. It sucked to have a vocal cord atrophy to the point where he underwent surgery. It sucked that Bon Jovi’s incredible work ethic—being a “good boy,” as he puts it—could not be guaranteed to fix the issue to the point where he’s sure he’ll be able to go out again two and a half hours a night, four nights a week. “This experience has sucked,” Bon Jovi reiterates. “This album”—the forthcoming Forever, from which Bon Jovi turned suck into music—“is great.” Obviously, it would really suck if he’s not able to tour it; that will only happen when and if his voice supports it, which it currently doesn’t.

It’s not WHO I AM . I’m not defined by the guy beside the microphone. There’s SO MUCH MORE .”

“The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh,” Bon Jovi says of accepting that this is ultimately out of his hands. He describes himself as a recovering Catholic, citing the “pretty rotten guilt laid into the Catholic religion in an organized way.” Bon Jovi has his own communion, which sounds a lot less accepting of the fact that what happens with his vocal cords is in God’s hands. “I sang ‘Prayer’ yesterday at [vocal] therapy,” he says, explaining he wants to “clear up a misconception with this storyline out there now.” “ Perfectly. I can hit the high B’s and C’s, no problem.” His speaking voice today certainly sounds much stronger than it was in the documentary.

Bon Jovi maintains that he will not return to touring unless he’s “100 percent of 100 percent.” “We’re so blessed at this point that we can go out,” he says. “I’m amazed, because I’ve heard [everyone from] doctors to people in the industry say to me, ‘People will pay money just to see you go up there and do it.’ I don’t want their money, and I’m not going to spend their time. It’s just not an option.” (For what it’s worth, Chopra asked Springsteen, who appears in the docuseries, if he performs as well in his 70s as he did as a younger man. He says Springsteen said, “No, but you know what I am? I’m a fucking rock star.”)

Bon Jovi says he watched a rough cut of Thank You, Goodnight a few months ago. “There were laughs and tears to see it all there in front of you,” he says. “To know you’re at your own bar mitzvah or wake, depending on how you look at it.”

jon bon jovi

When asked who he is when he can’t do what he does—be a current touring icon—Bon Jovi tells me, “This is what I do. It’s not who I am .” He adds, “I’m not defined by the guy beside the microphone. There’s so much more.” He knows we know the ground-out accomplishments that preceded this moment of Zen. His voice isn’t slow and irritated sounding, like it was when I was missing all those marks. Bon Jovi sounds as grateful and secure as he says he is. “You don’t forget about the other 40 years of being Tom Brady now that he’s not throwing a football any longer,” he says of his peer in perfection. However: “He’s not going to be able to go to the Super Bowl again unless he buys a ticket.”

Bon Jovi says he has a new mantra. “It’s not ‘Seize the day,’” he says. “It’s ‘Embrace the day.’ I used to want to punch it in the face, roll out of bed swinging. Now I want to hug it.”

But for all the talk of the mantra, his assertion that he is a river, always flowing and adjusting its course, that a post-touring career will be full enough with grandkids and wine and philanthropy, it’s clear Bon Jovi is not submitting to whatever will be. If anyone actually thinks that, well, to quote Bon Jovi quoting Benjamin Franklin, “Fuck ’em.”

‘Slippery When Wet’ Celebrates Bon Jovi’s Induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

(December 13th, 2017) – The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is finally calling Bon Jovi into its folds to occupy a pride of place among the greatest rock stars ever. Among those who are proud and mighty pleased is his official tribute act, ‘Slippery When Wet’. This team has indeed ‘kept the faith’ and done more than anyone to spread the music of the one and only Jon Bon Jovi. The outpouring of fan votes, over 1 million of them , is not surprising, for Bon Jovi has been a central figure in all things rock. Active for over 30 years, he has sold over 130 million albums worldwide, with eight songs reaching the No 1 spot on Billboard. As late as 2013, his was once again recognized as the highest grossing touring act. His tribute band ‘Slippery When Wet’ comprises Jason Morey (vocals), Anthony Cappolino, (guitar), Jimmi Botsford (bass) and John Martin (drums), who have achieved their own fame singing his songs wherever they go. ‘Slippery When Wet’ has performed over 1,400 shows in the U.S. alone, and has traveled to Africa, Mexico, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. They have headlined on over 60 cruises on the Royal Caribbean cruise line, played the pre game of Super Bowl 48 in East Rutherford NJ, and in 2007 became the only authorized Bon Jovi tribute in the world by Bon Jovi MGMT. ‘Slippery When Wet’ is also the most popular Bon Jovi tribute act on YouTube. Formed in 2003, the band traces its origin to the popularity of lead singer Jason Morey, who hails from Atlanta, Georgia, and resembled Bon Jovi to an extent that he was mistakenly invited backstage by comedian Dave Chappelle at one of his comedy shows. The band went on to earn praise as the ultimate tribute to the rock star, extracting live arrangements from Bon Jovi’s past tours. As Bon Jovi prepares to enter the Hall of Fame, ‘Slippery When Wet’ is around to play to packed audiences. “Our drive, musical ability, showmanship and dedication to duplicating the Bon Jovi live experience simply cannot be outdone,” said the band’s spokesperson.

October 2013

in honor of the bands 10 year anniversary we thought we’d take the time to reflect upon the last 10 years of slippery when wet

this band started 10 years ago with the thought if we could really put together a show that really embraced the live bon jovi experience …it just might work. after seeing bj countless times and hundreds of hours of watching live concerts and videos we crafted our show.

that first year or so….yikes…it took us some 100 shows or so to really start to get a feel for how the show would come together.

it took us a little while to earn some respect…doubters , haters , critics….all chimed in….as shows and crowds kept stacking….

then came 2006….with 3 years under our belt bon jovi pushing a very succesful new cd…chips started to fall into place….headlining rooms across the southeast …building fan base…..

folks paying attention…newspaper covers …radio appearances….the ultimate stamp of approval….official authorization from bon jovi management….now were on our way

suddenly after 4 years the phone rings ……………….its the mouse……….he says come on down and play at my summer concert festival….we went…. we all sweat …we kicked its ass….and still doing it some 7 years later…

halfway in….we turn around and who would have guessed it…were on our way to being the biggest band in atlanta….from sell outs to setting numerous attendance records….it all seems like a blur

around this time we finally get in with the house of blues company….one of my dreams to go back home and headline the stage where i once stood and thought……someday……someday….

over these 10 years you see clubs, venues ….open…close……do bustling business…fight to stay open…..with a few band line up changes over the years…still we marched on…..

one of the most rewarding experiences were our shows for the troops this last summer….africa , singapore , diego garcia….amazing time….

which brings us to this week ….. our 10th anniversary show… some 880 odd shows played to over a half of a million people…..and we feel like were just getting better…..with fans and friends like ours we can only grow….the love and support weve received over these 10 magical years is uncontested……theres not enough thank yous we could possibly give to the faithful…but we can start……from the bottom of our hearts…..thank u

2014 could be our biggest year yet……..r u ready???????

a quick shout out to some very influential people we’d like to say thanks to…in no particular order

Jon Bon Jovi Reflects on His Career: 'I Was Never Any of the Clichés of Rock Stardom'

The rocker looked back on his 40-year career at a screening of his band's docuseries, 'Thank You Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story'

Jon Bon Jovi is reflecting on his 40-year career.

Speaking during a Q&A at a screening of his band ’s docuseries, Thank You Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , in Santa Monica on April 10, Bon Jovi, 62, opened up about his career and shared how he has never been a stereotypical musician because he knew “I had to wake up the next day and do it again.”

“I was never any of the clichés of rock stardom because I was very cognizant of having to do it again tomorrow,” explained the singer. “But that's the fragility of something as big as your thumbnail. And I never took any of this for granted, never."

"Like I said, it's my 18th album and we worked as hard or harder on this album as I did on Slippery When Wet , in fact, harder because we're not as naïve as we were in 1986 when we just went, and guess what? We just wrote … Now you're working even harder and smarter.”

“But I do think sometimes about the athlete who eventually has to come to terms with a next chapter in their life, and I won't ever have to face that next chapter,” he continued.

Bon Jovi then went on to muse about the pressure that comes with being the frontman of an iconic rock band and fulfilling fans’ expectations.

“It's not easy,” he said. “It's difficult. The old adage with me in the heyday is, and the singer went home, that was the end of every story and the singer went home.”

"We all go on the social media and we see pictures from our pasts or we see our heroes in our past, and then you want to touch that moment again. But that's history,” he continued.

“Then you just have to be the best version of you now. And it's impossible to go back to 1995 and be that kid again. I challenge him, but I can't pretend to be that. You can't do that. And I think the question is do we because of social media, get caught up in that we need to be younger, faster, sleeker, or are we going to be cool with being comfortable with who we are now? Just the best version of us now.”

The rock act— which is fronted by Bon Jovi and also features keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, guitarist Phil X and bassist Hugh McDonald — announced their 16th studio album Forever last month. The record is due to be released on June 7 via Island Records.

Slippery When Wet , which  went 12-times platinum , remains the group's most successful album.

The band’s four-part docuseries, which features interviews with current and past band members like Bon Jovi, David Bryan and Richie Sambora , will be released on Hulu on Friday, April 26.

Elsewhere during the Q&A, the “Livin’ on a Prayer” singer also offered an update on his health after undergoing vocal surgery in 2022.

“What you saw on film was shot last March in that scene when I couldn't sing well, or two years ago when I was on the road,” Bon Jovi said. “I'm well into the recovery. I'm more than capable of singing. It's just that for me, the bar is two and a half hours a night, four nights a week, before I say we're going to go and do any shows.”

“So I'm well back on the road to recovery, not a day of its easy. Every day is a struggle, but I'm more than capable of doing it again,” he added.

Jon Bon Jovi contemplates retirement if 'the singing is not great'

1 minute read.

bon jovi band tour

Jon Bon Jovi is at a crossroads.

If he can't sing in concert like he used to, he's finished as a frontman, the  Sayreville-born rocker told the (British) Sunday Times Magazine in a story published April 13.

“This is the first time I’m saying this,” Bon Jovi said. “If the singing is not great, if I can’t be the guy I once was … then I’m done.”

Bon Jovi said he's had surgery on his vocal cords to correct problems that go back a decade. The admission came during a Feb. 7 Pollstar Live! music industry event at Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. His vocal issues came to a head during the band's 2022 tour of the South and Midwest that was fraught with scrutiny.

Bon Jovi had vocal surgery after the tour. He and the band recently recorded a new album, “Forever,” which is due Friday, June 7. A single, “Legendary,” was released on March 14.

“There is a big difference between being in a studio and going out on the road. I want to perform for 2½ hours a night, four nights a week – and I know how good I can be,” Bon Jovi said.

He compared his situation to another famous rocker. He does not want to become a “fat Elvis” at the end of his career.

Bon Jovi's vocal problems are front and center in the upcoming documentary “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” which debuts Friday, April 26, on Hulu.

Bon Jovi had a procedure called medialization, which provides support to a vocal fold that lacks either the bulk or mobility (or both) that it once had, Bon Jovi said at the Pollstar event.

“Sometimes people get nodules — that's a pretty commonplace,” Bon Jovi said. “Sometimes deviated septums and things that they've done take its toll on the cords. The only thing that's ever been up my nose has been my finger. So it was very difficult this last decade to have to contend with something that was out of my control.”

Bon Jovi showed the Pollstar audience a weak vocal cord with his fingers.

“The strong one was literally taking what was left of the weak one,” Bon Jovi said. “So they put a plastic implant in it for the last almost two years now. I've been in this rehab, getting it back together, but I'm getting very close.”

Bon Jovi doesn't want to be 'the fat Elvis,' will be 'crushed' if vocal surgery puts an end to touring

J on Bon Jovi is "Livin' on a Prayer" that his voice returns to its prime singing days after vocal cord surgery put a halt on live singing in 2022.

Jon, whose full name is John Francis Bongiovi Jr., is on the road to recovery after suffering an atrophied vocal cord which required throat surgery and rehabilitation. He's realizing, though, that performing live may be more challenging on his instrument.

"There is a big difference between being in a studio and going out on the road," he told the Sunday Times . "We have just recorded a new album. I sing in vocal therapy every day."

JON BON JOVI DOESN'T KNOW WHEN HE'LL TOUR AGAIN AS HE RECOVERS FROM MAJOR SURGERY

He added, "But I want to perform for two and a half hours a night, four nights a week — and I know how good I can be, so if I can’t be that guy … put it this way, I don’t ever need to be the fat Elvis."

Elvis Presley commanded the stage and the silver screen as the "King of Rock ‘n’ Roll." His later years in life were marred by a prescription drug dependency and severe health issues all while maintaining a physically demanding schedule.

He died on Aug. 16, 1977, at a hospital in Memphis, after being found unconscious at his Graceland mansion . He was 42.

Despite a new album release in two months, the "Bad Medicine" singer was candid about his future with the band.

"This is the first time I’m saying this. If the singing is not great, if I can’t be the guy I once was … then I’m done," he said. "And I’m good with that."

Jon reflected on the decades of touring he's spent with Bon Jovi, and remained hopeful yet painfully aware that he'll have to make a decision about singing in front of audiences soon.

"I can tell you that 60 is different from 50 and my current concern is that I’m going to forget how to sing," he said. "I’ll be crushed if I can’t sing live again, but what does a quarterback do when faced with the last ball he’ll ever throw? That’s the situation I’m in."

He added, "I want to look back on 40 years of Bon Jovi, look forward to the new album and appreciate everything. That’s my hope: to find joy in it all."

The Hulu docuseries, "Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story," premieres April 26 in four parts. Bon Jovi's 16th studio album, "Forever," will be released June 7.
