Wanderlust book cover

Karen Gershowitz is officially a travel addict—one with more than ninety countries under her belt. In these engaging stories, she brings readers along as her companions as she explores, laughs, and marvels at the richness of other cultures.

Whether she’s picking through the worst meal ever in the wilds of Tanzania, eating a transcendent strudel in Vienna, meeting the locals in an isolated opal mining hamlet in Australia’s outback, or learning to make noodles in a Chinese village, she invites you to share in her experiences.

Image

Since leaving home for Europe alone at age seventeen, Karen Gershowitz has traveled to more than ninety countries.

In pursuit of her passion for travel, she lost and gained friends and lovers and made a radical career change. She learned courage and risk taking and succeeded at things she didn’t think she could do: She climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. She visited remote areas of Indonesia on her own and became a translator, though only fluent in English. She conquered her fear of falling while on an elephant trek in Thailand. And she made friends across the globe, including a Japanese family who taught her to make sushi and a West Berliner who gave her an insider’s look at the city shortly after the wall came down.

An example that will inspire armchair travelers to become explorers and embolden everyone to be more courageous,  Travel Mania  is a vivid story of how one woman found her strength, power, and passion.

Travel is Karen’s addiction—and she doesn’t want treatment.

I was 17 years old, traveling alone, when I boarded a plane to Europe. Living in a different culture I experienced the world in new and surprising ways and discovered myself. My love of travel was born. I didn’t return to the US for three years.

33 Best Travel Essentials You Should Always Pack

What our editors always travel with, and you should, too.

For some of us, an affordable carry-on is our travel essential. For others, it's nothing less than a Rimowa suitcase . Some of us never travel without a cashmere sweater . Personally, I swear by this Halfday Garment Duffel , but others swear by a classic weekender . We're exploring all options here.

The Hanging Toiletry Bag

Best Hanging Toiletry Bag

Away the hanging toiletry bag.

From post-flight, or in-flight, grooming must haves to luxury wallets that make you feel more put together walking through TSA, you can trust our expertise here. And here's a light warning. We will, only once, recommend that you still wear a suit while you travel. It's part of our DNA, sorry. Other than that, these are the 33 travel essentials that we swear by.

It sounds annoying to say a cashmere sweater is the perfect travel accessory, but it's so warm, soft, and lightweight, there's nothing that beats it. Plus, our favorite sweater from Naadam only cost $100.

I've already written about how great this bag is . A garment duffel isn't a new concept, but for $100, this version of it is life changing. Pack two suits or a few dresses, roll up the bag, then add everything else like normal. Nice clothes stay wrinkle free and everything packs more easily.

We all know the deal. It's a return flight, you have new clothes and souvenirs, or you just are packing a lot less diligently. That's where this Just In Case Tote comes in. It packs down to the size of a book and expands to be a sizable personal item.

A passport cover is tough to call an essential, but once you hit a certain level of frequent flyer, it absolutely is. This one in luxe leather from Smythson is the best you can buy.

One thing we really believe in is upgrading your dopp kit. That polyester one from Amazon won't make you happy, and it'll disintegrate in a few years. Lucchese makes some of the best travel bags on the market , and this pebble leather dopp kit is the best value on the website.

Yes, the men's magazine is still telling you to wear a suit on a flight. A relaxed-fit unstructured suit is a man's matching set. It's just as comfortable as your ugly PJ pants, getting dressed takes two seconds, and you look great no matter how jet lagged you are.

If you insist on doing stretchy pants, make sure you do the best stretchy pants on Earth .

The airport shoe situation is a funny one. There's a lot of ways to tackle the issue. Most people prefer sneakers. Loafers are a great shout. Cowboy boots —they're slip ons!—are my chaotic choice. The only rule is no exposed toes.

Truthfully, though, these Sabah slip ons are the only answer to "What's the best travel shoe?" Slip on, slip off. Wear them to the beach, or use them as a bring your own hotel slipper.

When you're an American exploring parts of the world you're unfamiliar with, be smart. A front pocket wallet will keep you from being on the losing end of tourist pickpocket schemes. This one from Husbands is my absolute favorite.

If you have an especially long self-care routine, you'll need something a bit more tailor-made. This hanging toiletry bag from Away is a great shout.

Cadence Flex System

Flex System

As far as routines go, this Cadence system is a functional masterpiece. You can customize a set of containers for grooming products, bath products, and supplements. All the little hexagons click together for easy packing. It's some of the best travel design we've ever gotten our hands on.

Byredo Mojave Ghost Roll-On

Mojave Ghost Roll-On

Creating your own olfactory bubble is a life-changing travel hack, but spray-on cologne is a bit intense for the plane ride. Byredo makes nice roll-on fragrances to solve that problem.

F. Miller Eye Oil

Eye Oil

That stale plane air is a nightmare for your skin. This eye oil firms and nourishes skin while still feeling natural. Keep it on hand to take care of any problem areas—around your eyes, lips, and cuticles. It's our best hack for looking good even after a long flight.

Bose QuietComfort Headphones

QuietComfort Headphones

We're big proponents of noise-cancelling headphones for pretty much all things that require either a deep inner focus or a hard distance from the world outside. Bose's QuietComfort headphones silence the world (crying babies, crunching plane neighbors) around you.

Bombas Everyday Compression Socks

Everyday Compression Socks

These socks will reduce any swelling or numbness after a long flight, or a short one for that matter. Compression socks are your new favorite travel companion. These have a daily-use approved 15-20mmHg pressure.

Patagonia Nano Puff Fitz Roy Trout Hoody

Nano Puff Fitz Roy Trout Hoody

A packable Patagonia jacket is one of travel's biggest upgrades. It's super warm, and makes for an excellent extra layer—especially when you're not sure what you'll need. It packs into a little cube, which can double as a travel pillow.

Davek The Mini

The Mini

Tiny and adorable, this will save you from some unexpected weather. The micro design tucks away perfectly into your suitcase.

Drake's Brown Birds of Paradise Print Wool Scarf

Brown Birds of Paradise Print Wool Scarf

But even more versatile than a sweater is a lightweight scarf. Any scarf from Drake's is a good buy, but this printed one is especially fun. In the terminal, it's an accessory. In the lounge, it's a blanket. On the flight, it's a shawl, eye mask, emergency pillow, or a fucking tablecloth. If you buy one thing for travel, buy a good lightweight scarf.

Adidas Originals Stan Smith

Stan Smith

Stan Smith's are another classic choice. Wear them with jeans, sweatpants, or a suit, and look fine in all instances.

NEW BALANCE 990v4 Sneakers

990v4 Sneakers

Sometimes you just need to get there, and these sneakers will do the trick. And when you do get there, go stretch your weary plane legs on a long walk without having to change shoes.

Six Travel Mistakes to Avoid

No travel medical insurance? Unnecessary luggage and hotel fees? Here are the biggest travel mistakes people make and how you can avoid them.

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

A child sits on his suitcase at the airport looking up at the departures board.

Even the most seasoned tourists can make travel mistakes when planning a vacation. Some blunders can be minor infractions, but others can cost travelers a lot of money and heartache.

But there are steps you can take to avoid travel mistakes. Here are six slip ups that travelers may make this year, plus tips on how to avoid them.

1. Overlooking travel medical insurance

Christopher Elliott , a consumer advocate and founder of the nonprofit Elliott Advocacy , says many people don’t consider purchasing travel medical insurance . “People often think nothing bad will happen before or on their vacation, but then they get injured overseas and need to go to the hospital, and the next thing they’re looking at is a $10,000 hospital bill.” Indeed, nearly one in four Americans report they’ve experienced a medical issue while traveling abroad, according to a 2023 survey sponsored by GeoBlue, an international health insurance company.

Unfortunately, most U.S. healthcare plans — including employer group plans, Medicare and Affordable Care Act plans — offer limited or no medical coverage outside the U.S.

How to avoid: One solution is to purchase a travel medical insurance policy, a type of insurance that provides coverage for a range of medical emergencies while traveling abroad, from minor injuries to major events like heart attacks and strokes, to medical evacuation and emergency transport in the case of severe emergencies.

The average travel medical insurance plan costs $89, according to Squaremouth , a travel insurance comparison website. Squaremouth advises international travelers to obtain a policy that provides a minimum of $50,000 in emergency medical coverage and at least $100,000 in medical evacuation coverage.

Note: Some travel insurance policies include emergency medical coverage and medical evacuation coverage up to certain limits.

2. Getting hit with unnecessary luggage fees

You may have heard that a number of airlines — including American Airlines , Delta , and JetBlue Airways — recently raised their prices for checked bags. But one thing a lot of travelers aren’t aware of, Elliott says, is that some are now charging customers more if they check a bag at the airport versus paying to check a bag in advance. For instance, JetBlue customers flying within the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada can save up to $20 on their first two checked bags ($10 savings per bag) when they add them to their flight reservation at least 24 hours before departure.

How to avoid: Make sure to pay ahead of time for any bags that you plan to check.

3. Incurring hidden hotel fees

Wi-Fi fees, early check-in fees, gym fees—hotels today charge guests no shortage of extra fees and surcharges . It’s a widespread problem: In an April 2023 survey by Consumer Reports , nearly four out of 10 (37%) U.S. adults said they had experienced a hidden or unexpected hotel fee in the previous two years.

How to avoid: Many hotels offer to reduce or, in some cases, waive certain fees to guests who join their loyalty program, which is free in most cases. Also, sometimes simply asking an employee at check-in to waive certain fees could do the trick.

4. Not utilizing a key search feature on Airbnb

Like hotels, Airbnb rental property owners often tack on extra fees, such as cleaning fees, fees for additional guests beyond a certain number, and service fees. These additional costs can add hundreds of dollars to your bill.

How to avoid: Elliott praised Airbnb for introducing a feature in December 2022 that allows guests to view a stay’s total costs, before taxes, when searching for rental properties. But he says there’s a caveat: “If you’re in the U.S., you need to change a setting in order to see the full rate when you search for rentals.”

To enable the feature, click the slider on the upper right of the search page that says, “Display total before taxes.”

5. Paying full price for a rental car

First, the good news: “The rental vehicle shortage has improved,” Elliott says. That’s resulted in a stabilization of rates, with rental car prices recently averaging $42 a day, up only 3% from last year, according to a report from the travel search company Hopper. The bad news? Renting a car is still more expensive than it was before the pandemic, especially for travelers who pay full freight.

How to avoid: There are several ways you can avoid paying full price. Big-box stores such as Costco , BJ’s and Sam’s Club provide their members discounts on certain rental cars. AARP and AAA also offer their members discounted rates. ( AARP members save up to 30% on base rates at Avis and Budget Rent A Car; AAA members save up to 20% on Hertz rentals). In addition, a number of credit card companies offer certain cardholders rental car discounts when they book a vehicle from specific rental car companies.

You may also be able to nab a lower rate by prepaying when you book a reservation. And, some rental car companies offer limited-mileage plans at a lower cost, which could be a good option if you’re planning to take just a short trip.

Tip: See if your credit card offers rental car insurance before you pay for insurance from a rental car company.

6. Encountering sky-high hotel rates because of Taylor Swift’s European tour

When Taylor Swift performs a concert, sometimes tens of thousands of out-of-town fans descend on the city, causing hotel prices to spike. Consider: the median rate for a standard hotel room during an Eras Tour date in Europe this year is projected to jump by 44%, with average hotel room prices in Warsaw surging a staggering 154% during her tour date there, according to a recent study by Lighthouse , a travel and hospitality research company.

How to avoid: The simplest approach for Europe-bound travelers in 2024, Elliott says, is to avoid traveling to a destination during a Taylor Swift tour date in that city. “When Taylor Swift comes to town all of the hotels sell out, and it becomes very difficult to find a reasonably priced hotel,” he says.

Should I Use a Travel Agent? Our Travel Expert Says It Makes All the Difference.

The new age of travel agents know how to find deals, book off-the-beaten path adventures, and get you out of any jam. Especially if you know who to use.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

A woman soaks in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Kayak, paddle, raft—a river trip down Costa Rica’s Pacuare is good fun. And Danielle Meyer of Coastline Travel likes to book clients in the riverfront, all-inclusive, 20-suite Pacuare Lodge. “The way to get to the property is by whitewater rafting, so you truly begin with adventure!”

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

A man sitting in an open-air vehicle while on safari in South Africa smiles at the camera while an elephant is just over his shoulder, approaching.

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Tierra Bomba, a 15-minute boat ride from the Colombian capital of Cartagena, is an affordable Caribbean destination with a relaxed pace and soft white sands.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Matt Lindsey of LuxeSurfTravel can arrange a surf safari on a 165-foot boat, complete with dive masters. surf guides, and a spa. Guests spend a week cruising around atolls in the Maldives seeking out perfect swell and swimming with whale sharks and manta rays.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

”Totoro Eco-Lodge, in Nicaragua, has always been one of our favorites,” says Dominic Allen of Real Latin America. In addition to its laid-back vibe, it’s spectacuarly placed on Ometepe Island, with views out to the active Conception volcano. Allen recommends volcano hikes, rainforest excursions, tours of a chocolate farm, and sunset paddles in search of caiman.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

Meme stock mania is back: Why everyone is talking about GameStop, AMC and more again

Meme stocks are back.

One day after an account associated with the phenomenon posted for the first time in years on the X social media platform, shares in companies that have been linked to speculative trading activity are soaring in value.

Leading the way is video game retailer GameStop, whose shares have soared approximately 180% to $48.75 after closing at $17.39 Friday.

Other stocks rallying at eye-watering rates include AMC Entertainment Holdings, Blackberry and headphone-maker Koss Corp.

These firms have been generally unloved by most mainstream investors, as reflected in their previously desultory share prices.

But participants in the meme-stock mania have demonstrated an almost cult-like ability to imagine scenarios where the firms' fortunes can be revived, creating astounding — and almost entirely speculative — run-ups in their share prices.

GameStop became the chief beneficiary of the first round of meme stock mania in late 2020 when Ryan Cohen, the co-founder of pet supplies group Chewy, announced he had a plan to revive the fortunes of the flagging company.

Fueled by online forum discussion, especially on Reddit, Cohen attracted an army of believers in his strategy that sent the value of GameStop stock to as high as $81.25 after never breaking $14 a share.

It didn't exactly work: According to The Wall Street Journal, a string of executives hired by Cohen ended up quitting or getting fired. As recently as last month, GameStop shares had fallen back to just $11.

But on Monday, one of the chief meme-stock cheerleaders, known by the online moniker Roaring Kitty, posted a meme signaling he was planning to become active again.

The user, whose real name is Keith Gill and who was portrayed by Paul Dano in the film "Dumb Money" about the birth of the meme-stock frenzy, not only sought to make money but was also determined to punish other traders who were selling GameStop shares and other stocks short, meaning they were betting that the share prices of those companies would fall.

By driving up the price and "squeezing" these short sellers, Gill and his cohort created massive losses for the skeptics, which included large hedge funds and institutional traders.

Now, it's happening again: CNBC reported GameStop short sellers are set to lose more than $2 billion at the stock's current trading levels.

Creating value and making a 'statement'

As far as anyone knows, the companies whose stocks are being traded as meme stocks haven't actually done anything to reorient their fortunes in a way that would merit the tremendous run-up in their stock prices.

But that doesn't mean they're not taking advantage of the situation.

Tuesday morning, AMC announced it had raised $250 million off the run-up in its stock value from the near-doubling of its share price Monday (though it was just $3 to $5 per share).

It's likely more companies could announce the same. Ironically, this action actually reduces the value of shares held by the speculators.

But the goals of meme-stock participants are not solely to make a quick buck.

“I support these retail investors, their ability to make a statement,” Gill told T he Wall Street Journal in a 2021 interview .

Kenyan flood-weary schools reopen but more rains forecast

M ore than 90 percent of schools in Kenya reopened on Monday after flooding killed over 270 people and delayed the resumption of classes by two weeks, the government said.

The East African nation has been battered by heavy rainfall since March, causing a trail of destruction and swamping entire villages.

"Some students whose schools were badly affected are going to nearby institutions," deputy government spokeswoman Mwanaisha Chidzuga told AFP.

Two thousand schools across the country have suffered varying degrees of damage, with some currently housing families displaced by floods, she said.

The reopening of schools was scheduled for April 29 after a three-week holiday and had been postponed twice due to damage to roads and some schools.

There are 35,570 primary schools and more than 10,000 secondary schools in Kenya, according to the ministry of education.

"Our officers are on the ground checking how many of the affected schools are able to continue with learning," Chidzuga said.

In a school in the capital Nairobi, teachers and students were contending with the aftermath of the flooding and forced to dry damp and mud-smudged books in the sun.

The torrential rains, amplified by the El Nino weather pattern, have killed at least 277 people in flood-related disasters since March, according to government data.

More than 290,000 people have been uprooted from their homes and 75 reported missing, raising fears that the toll could rise further.

- 'Flooding expected' -

Authorities on Monday warned against unnecessary travel and urged caution with more rains forecast.

"Flooding is expected in low lying areas, riparian areas and urban areas while landslides or mudslides may occur in areas with steep slopes, escarpments and ravines," the interior ministry said in an advisory.

Lake Victoria in western Kenya -- the largest in Africa -- and Lake Baringo in the Rift Valley were projected to continue overflowing and contribute to flooding, it added.

At least 53 cases of cholera have been reported, according to the health ministry.

Over 300 people died in rains and floods in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia late last year, just as the region was trying to recover from its worst drought in four decades that left millions of people hungry.

More than 500 people have died in the current monsoon in Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia and Somalia, according to government data and figures from the UN humanitarian agency, OCHA, compiled by AFP.

Kenyan President William Ruto, who has positioned himself at the forefront of African efforts to combat climate change, has blamed the region's calamitous cycle of drought and floods on a failure to protect the environment.

Maine Travel Guide

Packing for Maine is sort of like packing for an adventure: You'll want to bring your sturdiest boots and most weather-resistant jacket, and the kind of bag that has room for fresh blueberries. Scenic Maine is known for its relaxed New England lifestyle, not so much the mansions of Greenwich or Newport as the earthy, sea-dashed homes that look like they've got stories. Bring your flannel, your favorite Stephen King novel (for the full experience of Maine's most famous resident, of course), and a taste for lobster, and you'll be ready for anything.

Eastern Standard Time

Best Time to Go

Maine gets cold in the winter, so unless winter is your favorite season and you are a big fan of the cold (no judgment here), summer and fall are the best times to go. While summer is peak tourist season and allows visitors to enjoy all that Maine's beaches and seafood have to offer, fall might even win out — the weather is usually brisk and comfortable, and the New England fall foliage can't be beat. In fact, Maine has entire events planned around its famous foliage: Harvestfest in York, Fryeburg Fair, OgunquitFest, and more. Craft fairs are extremely popular during the fall throughout Maine, so if your favorite part of traveling is discovering unique treasures, you'd be hard-pressed to find a season to visit better than autumn. And, of course, there's Halloween. Though not as popular a New England destination as Salem, Massachusetts, or New England neighbor Sleepy Hollow , New York, Maine nonetheless does Halloween in style, and fans of the holiday will find themselves among like-minded people.

Things to Know

Maine is a largely laid-back, outdoorsy state. If you're too clipped when speaking to locals, you might come off as uptight — be friendly with your communication and you can't go wrong. Don't eat lobster with a bib, don't ask if the blueberries are local (they are), and get comfortable with small talk, because Maine locals love to talk about the weather. For a state where so much of what there is to do is outdoors, it makes sense.

For some local delicacies, try Moxie, a soft drink that can be an acquired taste. Amato's pickles are based in Portland, and have the market cornered in Maine. And, of course, whoopie pies. The very first ones were sold in Lewiston, Maine, and nowhere does them better.

There's also a huge antiquing scene in the state, and if you're at all interested in ferreting out some vintage finds, Maine is an excellent choice for you. Almost every town has its own antique shop that folks swear is the best around. Even if you're not an avid thrifter, it's worth checking out some of Maine's most famous antique shops, just for the experience.

How to Get Around

Depending on where in Maine you're spending your time, there are a variety of ways to get around.

Trains: Amtrak runs a local service known as the Downeaster, which runs from Boston, Massachusetts, to Brunswick, Maine. Hop on for easy transportation to major towns and cities throughout Maine.

Buses: There are several bus lines operating throughout Maine, depending on what counties you're in. Greyhound runs throughout, but there are several more localized services that might be better for your needs.

Taxis: Taxis are available throughout Maine, but as in most places, you must call a service directly if you're not in an urban area already. Ferries: Maine is serviced by two ferry lines specific to Casco and Penobscot Bays.

Linton Maina celebrates at the end of the 3-2 win against Union Berlin that gave Köln hope of Bundesliga survival.

Köln conjure a comeback for ages in quest to complete multiple miracles

Odds are still against them but if struggling Effzeh stay up the wild win against Union Berlin will be talked about for decades

B orussia Dortmund may have done the Bundesliga proud this week. They didn’t do FC Köln any favours on Saturday night. After the Champions League finalists’ meek 3-0 defeat at Mainz, Edin Terzic and Marco Reus were sheepish and apologetic, with the coach bemoaning the display as “the face we’ve shown far too often this season”.

No matter. It takes a lot to dampen the spirits of the people of Cologne at any time, but on this Saturday? Nothing was going to smother the fire in their hearts. Their Effzeh had snatched victory from the jaws of certain defeat in a manner that stunned a stadium and city in which people want to believe anything, everything, is possible. They couldn’t quite believe this. “We were already relegated,” defender Timo Hübers told Sky afterwards. “We were mentally and physically exhausted.”

Hübers does not exaggerate. His team were done, still trailing at home to Union Berlin with a touch over three minutes of normal time to go and knowing that only a win would do. And they had only managed four of those before in a tough season underpinned by injuries, a transfer ban, a beloved coach being forced to take his leave and the lowest goals-for tally of any Bundesliga team. A fairytale, however improbable, normally needs a hero, wit, invention and for a long time, Köln have appeared to have none of those ingredients.

What happened next might slide down the page and become a mere footnote in history if, as we’ve expected for weeks if not months, FC Köln are relegated from the Bundesliga for the seventh time in their history at the same time next week. If it keeps them up? People will be retelling the stories over constantly refilled glasses of Kölsch in bierkellers for decades. And they won’t need to embellish one bit, because the plain truth is extraordinary enough.

Steffen Tigges’s equaliser, nodded in from a Mark Uth mis-hit, already felt like it was the Effzeh attack operating at its maximum. In the dozen games that preceded this one, Köln had only twice scored more than once, in the 3-3 derby draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach and in the similarly miraculous late, late win over Bochum. The other 10 games yielded a meagre five goals. Yet as stoppage time ticked on, seconds after András Schäfer fluffed a very presentable chance to put the visitors back ahead, Linton Maina found the energy to drive to the byline one more time, stood the ball up and Damion Downs – 19 years old, and still to start a Bundesliga game for the club – nodded home in front of the Südkurve to spark pandemonium. Even the normally reserved coach Timo Schultz joined the pile on.

Köln fans celebrate after the victory over Union Berlin.

Malleable, vulnerable opponents in Union certainly helped. A team that had plummeted under the increased strains of Champions League participation in the season’s first half appeared to have saved themselves with the power of their Köpenick home by spring, but have slipped back towards the trapdoor in recent weeks. The club took the decision to fire Nenad Bjelica as coach in the week with only two games to go this season. The short, sharp shock seemed to have worked as Union led by two goals within the first 20 minutes. Now, the Berliners face a beyond nervy final day of a season which began with so much hope.

In isolation, this comeback would have been extraordinary but Köln have looked buried for weeks. The last home game with Freiburg, in which they were full of desire but bereft of craft, felt like the end. The rousing reception the Südkurve gave their team after the previous Friday night home game with Leipzig felt more wake than motivation, the evidence clear. The opposition were excellent but they had only had to be so intermittently to win at a canter. This FC Köln were simply not good enough for the top flight.

Teenager Damion Downs celebrates after scoring the final goal in the 3-2 victory.

But here they were, having not discernibly improved in the interim – “in the last few weeks,” said Schultz, “only the other teams have managed to play for us. Now we have managed to play for ourselves.” Their managing director, Christian Keller, looked like a nervous wreck on the sidelines. A bespectacled Jonas Hector, the captain who retired at the end of last season and who they have missed so much, stood clenching teeth and fists up in the stands, Effzeh ’s version of Maradona watching as a fan at Boca. And on the other side there was a shell-shocked Marco Grote, left holding the baby as Union’s caretaker coach for the second time this season and looking ashen-faced ahead of their date with destiny next week.

Because this isn’t the last miracle Köln will need. On the final day they will need to win again, at Heidenheim, and hope Union lose at home to Freiburg. Even then, they wouldn’t be safe, with a two-legged playoff against Fortuna Düsseldorf to be negotiated, and one senses the gap between top-tier strugglers and second-tier hopefuls is not as great as it habitually tends to be, often destroying any tension. Yet at this club, in this city, hope springs eternal. As always.

Talking points

Dortmund’s lethargic return to domestic action was in stark contrast with their vanquishers Mainz, who hit their visitors with three goals in the opening 23 minutes and underlined their startling improvement under Bo Henriksen (they haven’t lost since March’s 8-1 defeat at Bayern ), sparking celebrations on the pitch and in the stands. The result made sure the 05ers can’t be directly relegated and, barring a goal-difference miracle, a point at Wolfsburg on the final day would guarantee them not falling into the playoff spot either. BVB’s loss means Leipzig have mathematically clinched fourth, though fan grumblings about Marco Rose’s tactics in the 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen are worth keeping an eye on.

Bundesliga results

Bochum 0-5 Leverkusen, Bayern Munich 2-0 Wolfsburg, Darmstadt 0-6 Hoffenheim, Mainz 3-0 Borussia Dortmund, Cologne 3-2 Union Berlin, Freiburg 1-1 Heidenheim, Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt, RB Leipzig 1-1 Werder Bremen, Augsburg 0-1 Stuttgart.

What better therapy for Bayern after their agonising Champions League exit than a visit from their bunnies, Wolfsburg? They were missing an injured Harry Kane – surely finishing any slim chance he had of eclipsing Robert Lewandowski’s single-season goal record – but eased home 2-0 with teenager Lovro Zvonarek scoring barely three minutes into his first Bundesliga start.

We now know the two automatically promoted teams to the Bundesliga; Holstein Kiel’s draw with Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday sent them into the top flight for the first time, while St Pauli’s comfortable 3-1 win over relegated Osnabrück not only sealed their promotion back to the Bundesliga after a 13-year absence but left them in pole position to win the title on the final day.

St Pauli players celebrate on the pitch surrounded by thousands of supporters after confirming promotion to the Bundesliga.

After 12 and a half years in charge of the first team, Christian Streich took control of Freiburg for one last home game, an emotional 1-1 draw with Heidenheim. One banner in the stands read “ loyalität und ehrlichkeit, leider eine seltenheit ” (loyalty and honesty, unfortunately a rarity). Streich is a one-off who will be missed, and not just by Freiburg fans. He could still sign off by returning the club to European competition for what would be an unprecedented third straight season, the twist being that SCF’s goal difference means they may need to win at Union to make sure.
