I remember when she came to town and was touring with Junior Boys. I love her voice, very warm and (for some reason) comforting yet energetic and fun. I hope she comes back. I'd buy a ticket in a heartbeat.

Great vibe. Big crowd in a small venue. Lots of energy. Out of town artist but most of the crowd seemed to know the tunes. Will definitely see her again next time through.

Jessy Lanza is a Canadian song-writer by heart but her warming vocals also do her some justice. With her ecstatic blend of electronic music, R&B and dance, her vibes are all you need to get in the mood for whatever occasion.

‘Pull My Hair Back’ is an intriguing listen as it owns an emotional, warming feel and although with its slow tempo, it is most certainly interesting to watch live, hence why it is one of her strongest debuts of the year. Jessy’s soft voice adds to the chilled vibe she provides the audience however with the techno/disco feel of the rave and strobe lights, it makes her shows just that bit more enjoyable.

It isn’t unusual for a Canadian artist to have their big break into the UK, but Jessy most certainly gives off a different tone as although her genre is R&B, it’s not the beat you can hear it in, but her vocals. ‘Kathy Lee’ is one of her singles where you can hear the bass in the background but with her subtle lyrics and soft voice, this single was flying off the shelves in music outlets! In this day and age popularity and image is put ahead of integrity, however you can see in Jessy Lanza's concerts that she puts her heart and soul into her music.

She grew up in Ontario, Canada, and began playing piano and clarinet throughout her school years. Later, she went on to study jazz at Concordia University. Her album also earned her the title of Best New Artist of 2013 by XLR8R. Furthermore, Pull My Hair Back (2013) was a runner-up nominee for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize. The very next year, she released a collaboration with Caribou entitled Our Love (2015). Molodoy Chelovek, or “young man,” is the alias of Leonel Suleimanov from Ufa. These are the studies of inner nature. He’s prepping a record for Xosar’s label that’s shrouded in mystery, which is a good fit.

Obgon means “overtaking” in Russian. Andrew Lee’s music is speeding past by you like a freight train. He’s able to hypnotize by sheer energy, which was apparent at the latest Boiler Room Moscow, where he played an amazing live set. His debut release came out on Philipp Gorbachev ‘s PG Tune label, and the digital version of the EP contains a unique sample pack with 50 samples of heavy machinery that he recorded. Moreover, Obgon is 1/2 of industrial techno duo Interchain.

Vasiliy Skobeev is a young Muscovite who has already released on Opal Tapes, MMODEM and, as of March, 100% Silk. He’s an intellectual, highly pleasant conversationist and a cinema freak with music background, so we’re always really happy to see him. His music is like looking at the world directly and openly and converting that into sounds.

Inga Mauer is a well-known artist with a proactive attitude. European crowds are already familiar with her punchy, crushing sets. Besides more dates in the EU, Inga has an Asian tour in the pipeline for 2017.

Moa Pillar is Fedor Pereverzev from Moscow. Starting with his record “Humanity”, he’s been turning heads, which led to festival appearances at Flow and Unsound , where he played with Helm. He calls his music “spiritual bass techno”, and his second record for Full Of Nothing label will definitely be a blast.

PTU will perform live at Nuits Sonores in May 2017.

Playlist: 18 Russian Women Making Electronic Music You Should Listen To

Moscow-based electronic musician, jekka, has created a blog called ‘parallel’ to bring more visibility to women in the russian electro scene. she shares 18 of her favorites below..

Jekka is a Moscow-based singer-songwriter and music producer. In addition to participating in the Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp in Saint Petersburg in 2013, she’s self-released two EPs and several collaborative singles with artists such as 813 and My Kingdom; produced several music videos; opened for Emika, Pictureplane, Blackbird Blackbird, Love Cult in Moscow; and played a great number of venues in Russia and abroad. Jekka is actively interested in technology and the arts. She even created a first prototype of a sound reactive dress in 2013 and is part of Playtronica – an interactive music playground exploring DIY technologies and accessible music-making.

When we contacted her, she kindly gave us the scoop on 18 of her favorite bands of the moment.

“I started the Parallel music blog because I was frustrated with the music media and the unsupportive environment that keeps posting the music and work of the same artists over and over. I was also disappointed by the fact that the percentage of coverage about female musicians was almost zero. My mission is to break stereotypes, inspire other women to make music by exposing them to their peers, and have a place to talk about education, developing your skills and believing in your abilities.

With most of the music media and music critics in Russia gone, the most thriving community for listening to music and discovering new artists is still the Russian social network VKontakte. VK has several advantages over Facebook, one of them being that you can upload your music directly onto the social network platform and share it in posts, messages and any other form, which is convenient for aspiring musicians.

This mix presents the first heroes of the blog, many of whom are my friends, but some of whom I discovered while browsing music on VKontakte.”

“I discovered this musician browsing through one of the many popular music groups in VKontakte and was amazed at how simple yet catchy her songs were. It might remind you a bit of Solange or Jessy Lanza in terms of the overall impression. And it was the first time that I really liked someone singing in Russian instead of trying to emulate some Western type of singing and applying it to the Russian language.
