LIVE REVIEWS + PHOTOS: Hollywood Vampires in Boston, MA (07.28.23)

The Boch Center in Boston was electrified on Friday night as the Hollywood Vampires took the stage, delivering a jaw-dropping performance that will undoubtedly be etched in the memories of everyone fortunate enough to attend. This all-star rock supergroup, consisting of Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, and Joe Perry (among other notables) delivered a show that was nothing short of sensational.

This was a makeup show from a previously postponed show earlier this year, when Depp sustained a painful ankle injury that kept him from performing for certain dates on the tour. Fortunately, he seemed like himself and moved around well, even though he mostly kept to his side of the stage.

From the moment the lights dimmed, anticipation was palpable among the diverse crowd that had gathered to witness this iconic ensemble of musicians. As the band members made their grand entrance, the cheers and applause echoed throughout the venue, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening.

The night kicked off with a mesmerizing rendition of “I Want My Now,” immediately showcasing the band’s undeniable chemistry and showmanship. Alice Cooper, ever the consummate performer, commanded the stage with his signature theatricality, donning an array of elaborate costumes and captivating the audience with his hauntingly powerful vocals.

Johnny Depp proved he was more than just a Hollywood A-lister; his guitar skills were on full display, and he effortlessly blended with the seasoned rock veterans around him. Joe Perry, a rock legend in his own right, shredded through the night with incredible precision and style, cementing his status as one of the greatest guitarists in history.

The setlist was a harmonious mix of original tracks and well-curated covers, paying tribute to some of rock’s fallen stars, such as David Bowie and Jeff Beck. Highlights included soulful renditions of “Heroes” and “Beck’s Bolero”, as well as covers of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way”, The Door’s “Five To One/Break On Through(To The Other Side)” as well Alice Cooper’s own “I’m Eighteen”, closing out with an encore of “School’s Out” with snippets of “Another Brick in the Wall”.

The visual spectacle accompanying the music was nothing short of breathtaking. Striking lighting, mesmerizing projections, and an impressively huge set of fangs enhanced the overall experience and added a layer of theatricality to the performance that Alice Cooper fans have come to expect. There was even a few moments of theatrical comic relief when Alice Cooper acted out his slow walk, donning his cane in stride, only to have the same bit mocked by Johnny Depp. All in good fun, and a wild performance (as was expected) from this collection of stellar musicians. The energy and passion displayed by this rock powerhouse were unparalleled, making for a show that transcended time and genre, uniting fans young and old in a mutual love for classic rock.

Hollywood Vampires Rock Hellfest 2023 – Gig Review

Hollywood Vampires

Hollywood Vampires kicked off day one of Hellfests evening slots with a fantastic performance full of classic rock favourites, captivating an enormous crowd with their charisma and impeccable stage presence. It was a wonderful day with the radiant sun shining down on the arena although as Alice Cooper said ’You don’t often see vampires come out in the sunlight’ but even with the risk of being burnt by the sun didn’t stop them putting on a show that the crowd went wild for. If you don’t know who the Hollywood Vampires are, they are an American rock supergroup formed in 2012 of Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, and Joe Perry to honour the Rockstar’s who died from excess in the 70s, showing a true dedication to their craft, bringing a new lease to life to the music we love.

Hollywood Vampires

The Vampires showed their commitment to the show after having to borrow all their equipment from KISS as all their equipment, wardrobe and stage setting got stuck at the border in Serbia and could not make it to France in time for the festival. However, they did not let this stop them from being able to put on an epic show and leaving the fans wanting more. I think this shows how truly professional the whole team behind the Hollywood Vampires are, they will not allow fans to be disappointed and as they say, ‘The show must go on’.

The set list for this show was wonderfully curated including their own songs plus plenty of covers from bands like Killing Joke and The Who. Johhny Depp took over the lead microphone for a few songs even paying an emotional tribute to his close friend Jeff Beck, by playing a cover of the David Bowie song ‘Heroes’.

Hollywood Vampires

They also made sure to play fan favourites such as Walk This Way’, People Who Died , The Train Kept A-Rollin’ and finally ending the set with ‘School’s Out’ getting the crowd screaming the lyrics out to them one last time.

Concert Review – THE HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES

I hate to admit it, but I really didn’t know much about supergroup Hollywood Vampires until a few days ago, when a friend asked me if I wanted to go with her to see them perform at one of the local casinos. I knew that Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp were in the band, but not much else. I’m so glad I went, because they put on a fantastic show!

Hollywood_Vampires

For those as unaware as I was, Hollywood Vampires was formed in 2015 by rock legends Alice Cooper and Joe Perry (lead guitarist of Aerosmith), and actor Johnny Depp to honor the music of the rock stars who died from excessive lifestyles in the 1970s. The band name comes from the drinking club called The Hollywood Vampires that was created by Cooper in the early 1970s. The club, which besides Cooper included such rock legends as Elton John, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Harry Nilsson and Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees, used to meet at the famed Rainbow Bar & Grill on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Their main objective was to drink until no one could stand up. Thankfully, Cooper and the other surviving members eventually cleaned up their act and are alive and well today.

Hollywood Vampires just completed a brief Spring Tour, which began in Las Vegas on May 10, and ended last night (Saturday, May 18) at the Fantasy Springs Resort & Casino in Indio, California (30 miles SE of Palm Springs). They were the only act on the bill, so we didn’t have to sit through any opening acts. They appeared on stage around 8:15 pm and played their asses off for nearly two hours, proving that age is only a number (Cooper is 71, Perry 68 and Depp will turn 56 in June). It was nice seeing a band where most of the members are older than me for a change LOL!

20190518_213819 (2)

Along with Cooper, Perry and Depp, the other touring band members included Chris Wyse on bass, Tommy Henriksen on rhythm guitar, Buck Johnson on keyboards and Glen Sobel on drums. They’re all seasoned musicians who played as a tight unit, and clearly enjoyed themselves on stage. Their infectious energy easily transferred to the audience.

They played a mix of classic songs and covers, original songs from their 2015 debut album Hollywood Vampires, and five new songs from their forthcoming second album Rise (set for release on June 21st), opening with “I Want My Now” from the new album. They followed with the head-banging “Raise the Dead” from their 2015 album, and now had the audience nicely worked up. Even though I wasn’t familiar with those first two songs, I was really digging them big time!

20190518_210657

Cooper was very engaging, and talked with the audience a bit between songs, doing a bit of reminiscing as he introduced some of the old songs. Some of the highlights for me were their covers of the Doors’ “Break on Through (to the other side)”, Aerosmiths’ “Sweet Emotion”, The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” (during which drummer Glen Sobel blew us away with a phenomenal drum solo), and David Bowie’s “Heroes”, in which Johnny Depp did great justice to Bowie’s memory by doing a fantastic job singing lead vocals. He’s really a fine vocalist; I loved his singing in the film musical “Sweeney Todd”, and I think he’s also pretty good at singing rock too.

Here’s a terrific video of the band performing “Heroes” that was shot by Joe Schaeffer, a photographer/videographer who also happened to be at the concert, and has graciously allowed me to include it in this review.

And here’s some footage of the band performing “Baba O’Riley”, showcasing Sobel’s amazing drum solo. I apologize for the poor quality of the sound on my video.

Among the other new songs they performed from Rise was “The Boogieman Surprise” a great, hard-driving track. Here’s the official video of the band performing the song at another show:

The guys kept playing song after song with scarcely a break, finally ending with their cover of Tiny Bradshaw’s “The Train Kept A-Rollin'”, then walked off stage. The crowd applauded wildly and repeatedly yelled “oncore!” To our collective delight, the band returned to finish off with another new song “We Gotta Rise”, and a rousing medley of the crowd-pleasing Cooper classic “School’s Out” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall”. It was an awesome show, and we all left happy.

Set List 1.  I Want My Now 2.  Raise the Dead 3.  As Bad As I Am 4.  Five to One / Break On Through (to the Other Side) (The Doors cover) 5.  The Jack (AC/DC cover) 6.  Who’s Laughing Now 7.  The Boogieman Surprise 8.  You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory (Johnny Thunders cover) 9.  My Dead Drunk Friends 10. Baba O’Riley (The Who cover) 11. Sweet Emotion (Aerosmith cover) 12. Heroes (David Bowie cover) 13. Git From Round Me 14. I’m Eighteen (Alice Cooper cover) 15. People Who Died (The Jim Carroll Band cover) 16. The Train Kept A-Rollin’ (Tiny Bradshaw cover)

Encore: 17. We Gotta Rise 18. School’s Out / Another Brick in the Wall

That would have been a great show to see. Lucky you!! Nice write-up Jeff. I saw Alice back in August (or September) and he was sensational. Hard to believe at 71 he still can do it as well as he does. He is always surrounded by great musicians, so that helps!!

Yes, it was a great show and Alice seems to defy the passage of time.

Nice review Jeff. Looks like you had a great time.

Thanks Ralph. Yes, I enjoyed it even more than I anticipated, as I wasn’t very familiar with their music.

And Alice is even older than me. That’s saying something.

And I’m certain I’m older than you Ralph LOL!

Spooky stuff.

This is Freakin Awesome Jeff, I’m really glad you went and had a Great Time. They Sound Awesome and What a Crowd, You’re So Lucky! I Would have loved to See them. 😊

Thanks Susan. They were great!

Alice Cooper what a legend eh? Know what you mean about age – the bands I see never get older, shame about me….

I didn’t know that this group existed before reading your article. I’ve checked the band out and some of their songs and I must say that they totally rock! I was not aware that Johnny Depp was part of a rock band! I am definitely looking forward to discovering their other songs.

Glad I could turn you on to them Lexy.

REVIEW/PHOTOS: Iconic rockers Hollywood Vampires blissfully bite into Bethel Woods

REVIEW/PHOTOS: Iconic rockers Hollywood Vampires blissfully bite into Bethel Woods

On an absolutely perfect July evening in the Catskill Mountains of New York, only one night after outlaw country legend Willie Nelson graced the same stage , the Hollywood Vampires flew out into the night to rock a huge crowd that turned out at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts for a rare opportunity to see this supergroup perform on the East Coast.

Named after a celebrity drinking club formed by Alice Cooper in the 1970s – whose members included the likes of John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and Keith Moon, among others – Hollywood Vampires began touring in 2015. The core three, consisting of Cooper himself, Joe Perry of Aerosmith , and superstar actor Johnny Depp , have been joined over the years by a who’s who of musical ringers, including Duff McKagen, Tom Morello, Geezer Butler, Perry Farrell, Zak Starkey, and Marilyn Manson. Touring musicians have included McKagen and Matt Sorum of Guns N’ Roses, Brad Whitford of Aerosmith, and Robert Deleo of Stone Temple Pilots.

Simply put, this is a live party of epic proportions. While the mission of the original namesake club was to drink until no one could stand up, the current goal of the band seems to be to have as much fun as possible when they get together and present a serious, straight-on hard rock show unlike any other to their fans.

On Sunday, July 30, they came out in front of four huge video screens displaying skeleton caricatures of the core three and rhythm guitarist Tommy Henriksen while cannons built a wall of smoke across the entire front edge of the stage. Opening with two originals, “I Want My Now” and “Raise the Dead,” the band was in full stride by the time they hit their first cover of the night with Cooper’s classic rock anthem “I’m Eighteen.”

Known for his tight circle of elite touring musicians, Cooper and company tore like bats out of hell through the remainder of a 19-song set, which included a few more originals and a slew of covers like The Doors’ “Break on Through,” Johnny Thunders’ “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory” featuring Perry on vocals, David Bowie’s “Heroes” with Depp on vocals, AC/DC’s “The Jack,” The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” Jeff Beck’s “Beck’s Bolero” with Perry playing Beck’s guitar, Aerosmith’s “Train Kept A-Rollin’” and “Walk This Way,” and the encore – “School’s Out” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.”

As the night came to a close, fans couldn’t help but smile knowing they just watched truly iconic stars having a blast biting into some of the biggest songs that many grew up partying to on a much smaller scale than they had that night.

With this being the end of an only three-show tour, Cooper is preparing to head back out on the road with his solo band, joining Rob Zombie, Ministry, and Filter on the Freaks on Parade Tour, which hits The Pavilion at Montage Mountain in Scranton on Friday, Sept. 8. Perry will also be heading back out with Aerosmith and The Black Crowes on the “Peace Out” Farewell Tour for the Boston legends beginning on Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

I bought the $1500 vip package where I got to meet the band and get front row seating and everything. I bought it cause I thought it would be sick to meet Johnny Depp. Obviously.

Well... The meet and greet started 1.5 hours later than they said It would. Then when it finaly started, we each got literally FOUR SECONDS to see the band. We had to talk as the pictures were being taken. 4 seconds no joke. And if you want to talk totem at all you risk ruining your pictures. Soooo Meet and greet sucked.

That being said, the concert itself was great. Awesome show.

It was a great show Johnny Depp was awesome, very talented! Even though Joe Perry was not present, Alice's guitar player was amazing. I really love the Hollywood Vampires and I hope they are around for a long time. I would love to see them again with a Joe Perry;best wishes for a speedy recovery. It was a beautiful tribute to the artists we have lost. Thank you Alice Cooper. Your Vamp fan TJ ❤

Excellent show and "fun" fundraising experience! I was very surprised at the extra effort band members went to to connect with the audience. I came to Phoenix from Oregon to see the Pudding Show with my family including my eleven year old son with full Alice make up. I hope to see it again next year!

The Hollywood Vampires (Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry) Reunite and Announce Tour

The supergroup will travel to Luxembourg and Germany next summer

the hollywood vampires johnny depp euoropean tour 2023 alice cooper joe perry

Whether you like Johnny Depp or long to drive a stake through his heart, you’re probably going to be seeing a lot more of him following his legal victory in a defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. In the latest example, Depp is resurrecting The Hollywood Vampires , his supergroup with Alice Cooper , Joe Perry , and Tommy Henriksen, for a short 2023 European tour.

The band was last active in 2019 when they released their sophomore album,  Rise . Now, as the group wrote in an Instagram post , “The Hollywood Vampires are BACK!”

The six-date trek includes five stops in Germany and one in Luxembourg, all between June 20th and 30th of next year. The Vamps expects this to be more of the beginning than the end; the announcement told fans to, “Keep an eye out for more to come…”

Check out the itinerary below. Tickets go on sale Monday, June 27th  at 11:00 am CET/5:00 a.m. ET through the band’s website .

On June 1st, Depp won a defamation case against Amber Heard, less than two years after he lost a libel suit when a judge ruled that calling him a “wife-beater” was accurate. In his latest courtroom battle, a jury awarded him $10.4 million, which Heard’s attorney says she cannot afford to pay . Since then, Depp has announced a new collaborative album with Jeff Beck  and shared a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs.”

A monster set from Hollywood Vampires at the Wang

Alice Cooper and guitarist Joe Perry perform with their band Hollywood Vampires in Landgraaf, Netherlands, in June.

Can a controversial defamation trial suck the life out of a Hollywood Vampires performance? Based on the shrieks that rippled through the crowd Friday night at the Boch Center Wang Theatre as Johnny Depp — one-fourth of the rock ‘n’ roll supergroup — stepped onstage, the answer is a shrill “no.”

The pall of Depp’s 2022 court case against his ex-wife Amber Heard couldn’t compare with the cloak of gloom that Depp and bandmates Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, and Tommy Henriksen cast over a spellbound sea of fans. Among these members of rock royalty, creepy remains king, and the band’s monster set delivered nearly two hours of timeless rock covers and originals with all the morbid theatrics of a Halloween special.

Cooper commanded an equally ghoulish and genteel stage presence, promenading with his signature cane and top hat beneath a massive set of inflatable fangs protruding from the ceiling. As Depp, Perry, and longtime Alice Cooper band member Henriksen cycled through blistering guitar solos, Cooper projected his gravelly vocals onto devilish originals from the band’s grimoire, like the urgent opener “I Want My Now” and their necromantic stomp “Raise the Dead.” His crooked pimp strut came alive for the swaggering highlight “The Boogeyman Surprise,” a hammy reminder of who’s the crypt-keeper-in-chief at this macabre cabaret.

Perry and Depp stepped up to the microphone to sporadically diminish the darkness, resurrecting some of the evening’s most memorable covers, from David Bowie’s “Heroes” — with Depp’s mystery accent on full display — to the Aerosmith deep cut “Bright Light Fright,” which didn’t go unappreciated on Perry’s home turf.

Yet for a band that embraced talk of death with nonchalance, and at times even treated the subject like a punchline, the performance often felt like an earnest acknowledgment of the sanctity of life. For every cavalier mention of kicking the bucket — for instance, the flippant original “My Dead Drunk Friends” — there was a salute to rock’s deceased heroes to balance the irreverence. Cooper dedicated a cover of “Baba O’Riley” to the Who’s John Entwistle and “the court jester of rock and roll,” Keith Moon. Depp introduced an instrumental tribute to his former collaborator, pioneering guitarist Jeff Beck, who died earlier this year.

The band’s incongruous airs of mockery and respect later overlapped on a rendition of the Jim Carroll Band’s “People Who Died.” As photos of deceased musical icons appeared on video walls behind the band, honoring everyone from Tom Petty to Lemmy, Cooper, Depp, and Perry chanted the jeering chorus: “Those are people who died! Died! They were all my friends and they died!”

Last night caught a few of rock’s remaining legends staring down their mortality, but Hollywood Vampires needn’t fear the reaper. Based on their lively stagecraft, and even more animated reception from the Boston crowd, it’ll be a while before anyone drives a nail into this band’s coffin.

Ultimate Classic Rock

Hollywood Vampires, ‘Hollywood Vampires': Album Review

Alice Cooper 's well-known focus of the macabre and embrace of the death stench that seemed to surround rock 'n' roll in the early '70s inevitably led him to the Hollywood Vampires , an all-star project that makes a furious attempt at resurrecting "dead drunk friends" – or at least the debauched ethos that once surrounded their music.

Dominated by edgy updates of songs by long-gone figures like Jimi Hendrix , Jim Morrison and John Lennon , Hollywood Vampires' self-titled debut album isn't the melancholy dirge it might have been under someone else's tutelage. There's nothing here as delirious as the tales of Cooper's long-ago, booze-soaked escapades with Lennon, Keith Moon , Micky Dolenz, Harry Nilsson and others -- or at least nothing here feels too much like a celebration.

Instead, from the first fog-enshrouded recitation by late horror legend Christopher Lee through two gloriously grim originals and string of covers, the Hollywood Vampires push back with bleak humor and fizzy anger against the dying of the light. Along the way, the album achieves – like the best of Cooper's work – a brilliant, brooding dissonance.

The core members of Cooper's new Hollywood Vampires lineup – focused in the modern era on songcraft, rather than carousing – include Johnny Depp and Joe Perry . Depp, who had an early music career before becoming an actor, first worked with Cooper on the movie  Dark Shadows , where they discovered a shared passion for British Invasion-era music and, as this album makes abundantly clear, a dark view of things.

Lee, who also met Cooper during the making of  Dark Shadows , opens the album with a passage from Bram Stoker's Dracula : "Children of the night," he concludes ominously, "what music they make." The original "Raise the Dead" carries the theme, and is followed by updates of classic-rock favorites like the Who 's "My Generation," Hendrix's "Manic Depression" and Led Zeppelin 's "Whole Lotta Love" that tend to be the album's least interesting numbers (though replacing Jimmy Page 's guitar solo with Cooper's scalding harmonica is a nice touch). Hollywood Vampires hits its stride when the group tackles deeper cuts like the Small Faces ' "Itchycoo Park," Lennon's "Cold Turkey" and Spirit's "I Got a Line on You."

Listen to the Hollywood Vampires Perform 'My Drunk Dead Friends'

It's all sewn together by some famous friends, including Paul McCartney , who stopped by one of the sessions and ended up playing on a cover of "Come and Get It," a hit song he wrote for Badfinger .  Brian Johnson , Dave Grohl , Ringo Starr 's son Zak Starkey, Robby Krieger , Joe Walsh and Slash also sit in.

Ultimately, however, the project rises and falls on the strength of Cooper, the core member who has the strongest connection to the original era. But he also provides the death-mocking theater needed to pull off something like this.

That spirit is best heard on "My Dead Drunk Friends," the album-closing original in which they sing, " I'm raising my glass and tossing it back but I can't remember why / S o let's have another for all of my brothers who drank until they died ." Hollywood Vampires move away from the maudlin here as the song evolves into a raucous sea chantey where the assembled crew happily brays, " We drink and we fight, and we fight and we puke, and we puke and we fight, and we drink ... and then we die ."

Somewhere, Cooper's dead, drunk friends are probably sharing a rueful laugh over all this. He wouldn't have it any other way.

Hollywood Vampires' Live In Rio is the jukebox of the damned

Released to tie in with the Hollywood Vampires ’ European tour this summer, this album – surely a missed opportunity not calling it Undead In Rio ? – contains zero surprises and delivers exactly what you would expect: Brazilian fans getting it in the neck.

Once you’re past opener Raise The Dead , Alice Cooper , Johnny Depp, Joe Perry and Tommy Henriksen stake a claim to being the greatest covers band on earth as they sink their fangs into My Generation, Manic Depression, Whole Lotta Love, Cold Turkey and a full-blooded rendition of I Got A Line On You – basically, a set-list comprising a generous chunk of their 2015 debut album.

Saving the best bites until last, Billion Dollar Babies , a runaway Train Kept A-Rollin’ and a lip-smacking Brown Sugar go beyond the first album and tip the avid audience into meltdown.

A classic-rocking jukebox of the damned, Live In Rio (thankfully) does not suck.

Most fun interview? Tenacious D – Jack Black and Kyle Gass – for The Pick of Destiny movie book. An avid record/CD/tape collector, he’s amassed more music than he could ever possibly listen to, which annoys his wife no end.

"All the blood rushed into my fist and I decked him. He fell to the ground like a tipped cow": What happened the night Vince Neil punched Izzy Stradlin

"Southern rock, blues rock, what does it matter what you tag it when the tracks are this good?": The Cold Stares prepare for a big future on The Southern

"A case of what might have been": The Dead Daisies revert to meat-and-potatoes type on Light Em Up
