holidays to egypt nile cruise

Many thanks for great information!

holidays to egypt nile cruise

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

19 of the best Nile cruises for 2024

Discover egypt’s past on a voyage along the world’s longest river with one of these unforgettable nile cruises.

Traditional felucca boats on the Nile at Luxor

S ailing the River Nile is a bucket-list experience. Since the first tourists travelled down the river in 1869, it has attracted visitors enthralled by Egypt’s pharaohs, prophets and pyramids. The world’s longest river flows through 11 African countries for 4,100 miles before spilling out into the Mediterranean, but it’s the Upper Nile, which snakes through southern Egypt, that offers the most cruise itineraries. These visit some of the country’s famous ruins and archaeological discoveries, including the Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Aswan and the Temple of Horus. Cruises operate year-round but sailings between October and May will avoid scorching summer temperatures. Whether you choose to sail on a modern cruise ship, a restored paddle steamer or even a traditional two-masted dahabiya, these are some of the best Nile cruises and itineraries for this journey of a lifetime.

1. G Adventures: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile

A traditional dahabiya cruises the Nile at sunset

Best for a dahabiya experience Leave the crowded ports to the oversized ships and opt for a more serene sailing with G Adventures. Its ten-day Egypt: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile itinerary includes four nights in Cairo and five on board a traditional dahabiya, which has no engine so you can sit back and listen to the sounds of the waves. With just ten cabins, it can dock at small sites close to villages for a more authentic experience. These include a visit to a nonprofit charity working with young people in the West Bank, a barbeque on a remote island in the middle of the Nile and a trip to Nubian village for mint tea with a local family.

2. ms farah: taste of egypt.

Best for on-board experience The real attraction of a Nile cruise lies on dry land, but guests on an Avalon Waterways cruise will be in no hurry to disembark. This ship has 56 deluxe cabins and two suites, and all have oversized balconies to watch the world sail by. Treats on board include free use of a sauna and steam room, complimentary wi-fi, barbecue lunches and dinners on the sun deck, a library and welcome amenities including a fruit basket and canapés. Guests can join an Egyptian cooking class, use a telescope to stargaze or attend a lecture by an Egyptologist. Ten-day Taste of Egypt itineraries feature five nights in Cairo, including lunches in local restaurants, trips to the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Aswan High Dam, and an optional dinner cruise with live music and belly dancing.

The 12-day tour includes seven nights on the MS Nile Plaza with its restaurant, bar and sundeck, two and a half days of free time and even a VIP transfer from your home for your flight to Cairo. A cabin on MS Darakum

Best for watching the world go by Those who like to take the long route and stay on a boat for the duration of their Egyptian adventure in Egypt will enjoy a cruise on the 52-cabin MS Darakum. Thanks to its very low draft, it is one of the few vessels that can sail from Cairo to Luxor. After an intoxicating few days in the capital, exploring its markets, mosques and ancient wonders, it’s time to travel south. The beauty of covering a much longer distance than a traditional Nile cruise is the extra time it allows to simply sit and watch the world go by. Riviera Travel’s Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Luxor itinerary is sprinkled with long and leisurely sailing days where there’s little to do except relax on the sun deck and gaze out at the small farms and date plantations, before retreating inside to attend the fascinating onboard lectures.

After time in Cairo and a short flight to Luxor, it’s time to board for a voyage through 7,000 years of history. The traditional-style ships include large Royal suites and very high levels of service and comfort throughout. As well as all the usual big hitters, there are plenty of offbeat options that make this an eye-opening choice for the curious traveller. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the impressive seventh-century St Simeon Monastery, the nearby traditional Nubian village and the chance to see Cleopatra’s unfinished obelisk.

10. SS Sudan: On the River Nile

SS Sudan

Best for Agatha Christie lovers One of the most historic and atmospheric vessels to ply the Nile’s waters, this celebrated 19th-century steamer once welcomed Agatha Christie aboard. It is widely believed that it was that trip in 1933, accompanying her husband on an archaeological mission, which paved the way for one of her most accomplished murder mysteries. Following Kenneth Branagh’s 2022 adaptation of Death on the Nile , the SS Sudan is the perfect ship for fans of the Queen of Crime; there are cabins named after Christie and her character Hercule Poirot. The boat exudes opulent period charm, from the teak decks and parquet flooring to the brass bed frames in many of the rooms. Guests also have exclusive access to a network of expert archaeologists who will help bring the historical ruins to life.

11. SS Misr: Timeless Nile

SS Misr

Best for traditionalists Misr, which means “Egypt” in Arabic, is a propeller steamer that has long enjoyed a romance with this country. Built in Preston in 1918 by the Royal Navy, in 1938 it was converted into a luxury yacht that played host to King Farouk, the country’s penultimate monarch. The vessel has now been fully restored to its former glory, and its 12 and 14-night trips are known for celebrating local food — there’s a rather regal feeling inside the main Marasem restaurant, with framed photos of past royalty dotted about and waiters smartly dressed in attire inspired by the glory days of Farouk. The food is largely international but local flavours are celebrated in dishes such as bessara, a local dip made from fava beans.

13. La Flaneuse du Nil: traditional-style sailing

La Flaneuse du Nil

Best for return visitors For those who have already sailed the Nile and may be looking for something different, La Flaneuse du Nil is a tempting option. While most boats travel north from Aswan towards Luxor, this intimate five-day cruise heads south into Lake Nasser bound for the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel. Powered by sails and tugs, just like the original dahabiyas that were once a regular sight on the waterway, this cosy vessel showcases the subtle beauty of the vast man-made reservoir that straddles Egypt’s border with Sudan. The boat sails at a leisurely pace, with stops for lake swims, sunset hikes and solitary mornings on quiet beaches, as well as guided trips to some of the most impressive ancient wonders Egypt has to explore.

14. Sanctuary Sun Boat III: luxury cruise

Sanctuary Sun Boat III

Best for fun on the river An extremely attractive boat, and one of the few vessels to (occasionally) cruise from Cairo to Aswan, the Sanctuary Sun Boat III takes its inspiration from the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s. Think ecru tones, four-poster beds draped in the finest Egyptian linen and entertainment in the form of belly dancers and whirling dervishes. There are modern touches, too, with air conditioning and a swimming pool on the Cleopatra Oasis sundeck: the perfect spot on which to sip a hibiscus juice and watch the world go by.

15. RV Da Vinci: Land of the Pharaohs

Best for value With its understated style, the RV Da Vinci is a good choice for passengers who want to travel in more contemporary surroundings. Built in 1993 and fully refurbished since, it offers a comfortable base to travel on the classic route from Luxor or add on a few days in Cairo. CroisiEurope’s eight-day Land of the Pharaohs cruise includes excursions to all the headline sights, such as the Valley of the Kings and Temple of Kom Ombo, and options to book others, such as a breathtaking balloon ride over the Nile Valley or the evocative sound and light show at Karnak. At the end of the day, enjoy a final cocktail as the sun goes down — all drinks are included in the fare.

17. MS Radamis II: Nile River Cruise including Cairo and Hurghada

Best for solo travellers If you’re fed up with being stung by single supplements, don’t want to set sail with loved-up couples, or simply just enjoy travelling alone, then check out the Travel Department’s dedicated sailings for singles. The company charters this comfortable ship, which has 75 cabins, and for solo travellers it makes for an exclusive and intimate holiday. The sun-deck bar is a top spot to mingle over cocktails with newfound friends and enjoy barbecues. The supplement-free solo itineraries take in a 12-night Nile cruise, with included shore trips to the Temple of Horus, Valley of the Kings, High Dam and temples of Karnak and Luxor. At the end of the cruise you’ll fly and flop with a couple of days of relaxation in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada. The tour operator also uses the vessel for its escorted group tours on the Nile.

18. Sonesta Dahabeya Amirat: Nile cruise

Sonesta Dahabeya Amirat

Best for groups You can sail the Nile in style on this twin-masted dahabiya, which harks back to the graceful travel of bygone times. Inspired by the 19th-century vessels used by royalty and aristocrats, this intimate and sophisticated 14-passenger ship is the smallest in the fleet owned by the international Sonesta hotel group. It’s a wonderful choice for extended families or groups of friends who want to book an entire ship for an exclusive holiday. Sumptuous cabins are decked out in blue, gold and cream, and guests can wallow in baths after a busy day sightseeing. The ship goes back and forth on week-long trips between Luxor and Aswan and wherever possible sails under wind power.

19. AmaLilia: Secrets of Egypt and the Nile

Abdeen Palace in Cairo

Best for being pampered AmaLilia, which sailed on the Nile for the first time in March 2024, would impress even the most discerning pharaoh with its marble bathrooms, heated pool, massage treatments — and even a nail bar. Its suites are stylish and contemporary, and the decor throughout the ship has an understated elegance, showcasing Egyptian ornaments and artwork. The thoughtful Secrets of Egypt and the Nile itinerary includes extras such as the Abdeen presidential palace for lunch and a lesson in papyrus making in Luxor. AmaLilia is an almost identical ship to AmaWaterways’ first Nile ship AmaDahlia, with the addition of more plush suites.

ON A PRIVATE GUIDED TOUR IN CAIRO

nile cruise recommendations

All our Nile cruise and Stays include Cairo sightseeing visiting the Great Pyramids.

All of our existing Nile Cruise and Stay packages include at least two or three nights in Cairo so that we can show you some of the very best attractions to be found in and around Cairo, from the ancient Giza Pyramids on the outskirts of Cairo, to the first pyramid built at Saqqara, and more.

In addition to the pyramids at Giza and Saqqara, you can also look forward to visiting a number of other fascinating places in and around Cairo, including places such as the Egyptian Museum; the Cairo Citadel and its famous Muhammad Ali Alabaster Mosque; the Ben Ezra Synagogue; the Hanging Church of Cairo; Memphis, the capital of the Old Kingdom, and the not-to-be-missed Khan el Khalili Bazaar which has been going ever since the late 14 th  century.

There are or course an almost infinite number of other wonderful things to see and do in and around Cairo, and because we also offer  Customized Egypt Vacations  we can tailor your tour to include any and all other attractions you would like to see while you are in Cairo.

Unless it is clearly stated otherwise in our itineraries, your tours in and around Cairo are all private tours that also include your own personal driver and one of our friendly Egyptologist tour guides.

Interesting Fact  – Did you know that while images of the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx have become synonymous with the face of Ancient Egypt and its powerful pharaohs, only a very small number of pharaohs were actually laid to rest in pyramids? Most were in fact buried in rock-cut tombs such as those found in the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens in Luxor.

CRUISING THROUGH THE NILE RIVER VALLEY

nile cruise and stay all inclusive

Whether your 5-Star Nile cruise ship takes you from Aswan to Luxor, or whether it takes you from Luxor to Aswan, the magic simply doesn’t end; from the time you board your beautifully appointed cruise ship, to the time you finally disembark at the end of your cruise.

Any Nile cruise is a wonderful experience, but when you have booked one of our Nile Cruise and Stay holidays, it is even better because you will once again have one of our friendly Egyptologist tour guides with you to show you around all the incredible sites you will be visiting during your cruise.

The cruise ships which we book our clients onto are literally like floating hotels with all the regular amenities people have come to expect when they book into a good hotel. We also book our clients onto these ships on a full-board basis so you don’t even need to worry about meals during your cruise.

Even though our various Nile Cruise and Stay packages can vary significantly from one package to the next, you can still expect to visit and explore the same amazing sites while you are enjoying your 5-Star cruise through the Nile River Valley. Below is a breakdown of which incredible sites you can look forward to visiting with your Egyptologist tour guide during your cruise:

ASWAN AND ITS ANCIENT – AND MODERN WONDERS

In Aswan, 3 attractions which feature in just about all of our Nile Cruise and Stay holidays are the astonishing Aswan High Dam; the massive Unfinished Obelisk, and the truly remarkable Temple of Philae. While the Aswan High Dam is by no means an ancient attraction, or even a very old one, it is still a very remarkable place to visit, not least because of the fact that it quite literally changed the face and future of Egypt forever. It also gave birth to the forming of Lake Nasser which in turn led to the rescue and relocation of several ancient sites which would otherwise have vanished below the water when the lake formed.

The ancient Temple of Philae which you will visit while you are in Aswan is just one example of a magnificent monument that had to be rescued by moving it in its entirety from its original location to higher ground. Some of our Nile Cruise and Stay holidays also include a visit to the Abu Simbel temples which are located approximately 230km away from Aswan, and if your chosen itinerary includes a visit to these two gigantic temples, you will be even more amazed to know that they too were relocated in their entirety to higher ground

KOM OMBO TEMPLE

All the Nile River cruises that feature in our Nile Cruise and Stay packages stop at Kom Ombo which is just a relatively short distance away from Aswan. When your cruise ship docks at Kom Ombo, your Egyptologist tour guide will accompany you on a tour to the absolutely fascinating Temple of Kom Ombo. This Unique ancient complex was constructed in honor of two different gods, Sobek the crocodile God, and Horus the falcon-headed god.

In order to avoid offending either of these two gods, the temple was built in such a way so that each god would have their own half, and both halves had to be identical in every way. It is really a unique and incredibly fascinating site, and you’ll guide will be more than happy to share its history with you.

EDFU TEMPLE

After your ship leaves Kom Ombo, the next place it will dock at is Edfu. Once the vessel docks here, your Egyptologist tour guide will once again escort you on an excursion to see the absolutely indescribable Temple of Horus.

This remarkable ancient complex was abandoned by the Romans and later became buried beneath the sand, and it remained that way for more than two thousand years. As a result, it is today the most well-preserved ancient temple ever discovered in Egypt.

LUXOR – THE ANCIENT CAPITAL CITY OF THEBES

best nile cruise and stay

The tours which you will enjoy once your ship docks at Luxor, are tour experiences which you are not likely to ever forget. Usually, sightseeing tours in Luxor are divided into two stages: an East Bank tour and a West Bank tour. During your East Bank tour, you can look forward to seeing places such as the beautifully preserved Luxor Temple, as well as the sprawling Karnak Temple complex which was once a temple city which was formed over a period of more than two thousand years.

When you are taken for your West Bank tour, the sightseeing is just as spectacular, and you can look forward to visiting places such as the Colossi of Memnon; the mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, and of course the sprawling necropolis known as the Valley of the Kings. It is within this ancient necropolis where the tomb of King Tutankhamun was discovered in 1920  by Howard Carter. When the tomb was discovered, it was still sealed and intact, and full of treasures and artifacts, all of which are on display at the Treasures Room at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Our Nile Cruise and Stay holidays do not include an admission ticket for the tomb of King Tutankhamun, but a ticket can be purchased on the site. Unfortunately, tour operators are no longer able to purchase tickets on behalf of their clients. It is also worth noting that there are always long queues of people waiting to see the world’s most famous ancient tomb, and only a certain number of tickets are sold each day. In light of this, if you want to see inside King Tutankhamen’s tomb it is best to let us know well in advance because you will probably need to spend at least one or more additional days in Luxor.

WHAT ELSE TO EXPECT DURING YOUR NILE CRUISE AND STAY HOLIDAY

egypt nile cruise and stay

Nour El Nil Dahabiya is perfect if you’re looking for an relaxing Nile cruise and stay holiday.

Depending on which one of our Nile Cruise and Stay packages you book, you may very well be able to enjoy onboard entertainment in the evenings aboard the ship as well. Entertainment can range from a Captain’s Welcome cocktail party, to things like authentic Egyptian Belly Dancer shows,

Tanoura dancers, and various other fun activities. Regardless of what sort of entertainment is provided during the course of your Nile River cruise, you can be sure that your time on the water will be totally unforgettable.

NILE CRUISE AND STAY – TO EGYPT AND BEYOND

While some of our Nile Cruise and Stay itineraries only include time in Egypt and an unforgettable Nile River cruise, others include visiting one or more additional destinations such as Morocco, Jordan, Dubai, or Turkey. If you’re chosen a tour itinerary which includes one or more additional destinations, then once your Nile River cruise is over, you will fly back to Cairo where you will typically spend one more night before boarding your flight to your chosen second destination.

As is always the case when you travel with us, when you arrive at the airport in whichever destination you have chosen, we will once again have one of our tour representatives standing by to meet you at the airport, and to escort you to your hotel. Throughout your tour, you can expect the same high level of service and hospitality that you have enjoyed during your time in Egypt.

THE MAGIC OF EGYPT AND BEYOND, WITHOUT THE HASSLE AND WORRY

Nile River cruise holidays take you into the realm of ancient Egypt . Embark on a Nile cruise and you’ll instantly be transported back to a time where romance, intrigue and adventure where bywords in travel.

The world’s longest river is aligned with archaeological sites and dramatic landscapes. It’s a symbol of hope to the people of Egypt and North Africa as well as an exciting opportunity to explore in the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Karnak.

Ancient Egypt marks the midpoint between Africa and the Middle East . It’s a country that’s cultural threads stretch back in time in much the same way as the River Nile snakes from the capital city of Cairo to Aswan before crossing the border and flowing through neighbouring Sudan. Explore amongst the architectural remnants of the Ottoman Empire and the pyramid goliaths of Giza before embarking on a cruise to see the magnificent monuments set on either side of the Nile River Valley.

If you’re looking for a golden sand beach and an offshore coral reef, the Red Sea resorts around Sharm El Sheikh and El Quseir provide perfect places to hang out before or after a Nile River cruise. Situated to the south of the biblical settings of the Sinai Peninsula, the Red Sea has become one of Egypt’s best loved locations for holiday makers with several all-inclusive beach resorts adding to the magical mix of ancient treasures and romantic river journeys.

No cruise along the River Nile is complete without experiencing Egypt’s most intriguing architectural feats. The UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valley of the Kings, especially, is where you’ll find some of the region’s world-famous rock hewn tombs and hieroglyph daubed walls. Located on the opposite west bank to the temples of Luxor and Karnak, this is the most exciting section of a cruise along the Nile and a great precursor to Kom Obmbo Temple that sits at the approach to Aswan.

The flight time from the UK to Cairo is roughly four and a half hours.

You don’t need a visa to visit Egypt from the UK as long as you stay for less than three months. Go to GOV.UK for entry requirements to Egypt or, alternatively, visit CIBT visas for more information.

The River Nile is one of the hottest places in Egypt with July and August showing peak temperatures. As river cruises run all year round, it’s well worth visiting outside of summer when the climate’s more comfortable and there will be fewer crowds around the main monuments at Karnak and Luxor.

Egypt is on Eastern European Time and therefore three hours ahead of the UK.

Arabic is the official language of Egypt and widely spoken throughout the Nile regions. English is also commonly understood in tourist areas and around the beach resorts on the Red Sea.

Makadi Bay has a laid back atmosphere and stunning surroundings while nearby Hurghada combines modern facilities with the vibrancy of its old town. Each offers excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving on colourful coral reefs – or even just relaxing by the pool with a cocktail.

Day 1-3: Arrival at the Red Sea

A typical itinerary sees you fly direct to Hurghada or Makadi Bay on Friday for the first 3 nights at your chosen hotel (or Marsa Alam on Wednesday for the first 5 nights). The cruise starts on Monday, so you can relax and enjoy the Red Sea until the itinerary commences.

Day 4: Arriving in Luxor

Day 5: Luxor and East Thebes

After breakfast visit the East bank of Thebes and the Temples of Luxor and Karnak. At the vast open air museum of Karnak, marvel at the Great Hypostyle Hall with its 134 columns. Enjoy lunch and dinner on board, and overnight in Luxor.

Day 6: Luxor and Western Thebes

Travel to the West Bank, Thebes and the Valley of the Kings, final resting place of the Pharaohs; there is an optional visit to Tutankhamun’s tomb*. Other highlights include the imposing Temple of Hatshepsut, the gigantic Colossi of Memnon, and Medinet Habu temple. In the afternoon, sail to Esna. Dinner is on board and you overnight at Esna.

Day 7: Kom Ombo to Aswan

The cruise continues via the impressive sight of Kom Ombo standing sentinel at a bend in the river. Visit this unusual double temple, built in 250BC to honour the crocodile-headed Sobek and the falcon-headed Horus, before sailing on to Aswan.

Day 8: Agilika & the Temples of Philae

Visit the unfinished obelisk first thing, then take a motor boat from Aswan to the island of Agilika and the Temples of Philae, devoted to Isis, and visit the famous Aswan High Dam Enjoy an optional day trip to Aswan Nubian Village national park*

Day 9: Aswan

A free day to explore Aswan and its lively Souk, enjoy the optional early morning excursion to Abu Simbel*, or to simply relax on board. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat ride along the Nile, before embarking and sailing to Kom Ombo. Overnight at Kom Ombo.

Steigenberger ship on the Nile

Myself and a friend stayed three nights on the ‘Steigenberger Legacy’ Nile cruise ship in April and travelled from Aswan to Luxor, visiting Kom Ombo and Edfu en route. Pros: -Helpful staff, apart from Reception staff. -Welcome lemonade drink. -Immaculately clean boat. -Free WiFi. -Afternoon tea - top deck. -Open-air paddling and dip pool - top deck. -Lounge Bar with plentiful upholstered seating and dance floor. -Egyptian music evening. -Restaurant - superb, tasty and well-presented food. -Cabin with twin beds, bedside tables & lamps, telephone, chairs & table, fridge, mirrors, cupboard, safe. En suite with walk-in shower, toilet, sink. Cons: -More information about the ship at check-in would be useful. -All drinking water chargeable, including breakfast, although cheap to purchase. -Room - no kettle. -Checkout 8am

This was our second Nile Cruise and this time we were on the MS Royal Viking which was probably slightly better than our previous cruise in that the sun deck was nicer. I think you have to review the boats offered before you go as some are much better than others but we had booked through Broadway Travel with Meeting Point the agent locally and both trips were good. The Royal Viking was nicely turned out, spotlessly clean, lovely staff and the buffet food was good. I preferred the round tables of our last boat to the oblong ones here, but that is not a criticism. The bar was nicer on this one. The cabins are well appointed and it is very nice travelling along the Nile watching the banks from the sun deck or your room. The entertainment in the evening is fine and the music provision in the bar was much better than our last trip. Although we have been before we still did the main excursions which were excellently guided by Ahmed, who added to our knowledge and had some nice tales. Tip though depending on how your cruise goes will impact on your itinerary. Last time we went we did the Brookes Hospital buggy and really enjoyed it but it was mid afternoon, so we went again but this was late afternoon in the middle of Luxor rush hour, bad idea. The horses are amazing but I was quite scared by traffic. So if your trip is earlier in the day and goes into the side streets do it other wise don’t. Also don’t go on your own unless it is a Brooke’s Hospital ride from their base as some of the other horses are badly treated. Others mention Abu Simbel, if you haven’t been before it is a must. As we had we opted to stay in Aswan and had lunch in The Old Cataract Hotel which was fantastic, then we visited the local bazar but it is generally very touristy. Also we did not do the Nubian Village, last time so we did this time. The village visit itself is ok but the Felucca trip down to it through the nature reserve was great and the bird life is terrific. The Royal Viking has a private mooring in Luxor which is a way out of town. If your boat docks in Luxor you can step off and explore the bazar which you can’t do from the RV. If you have not been before, go prepared. Water is charged on the Boats, all of them. You pay a gratuity on arrival, but that excludes the Egyptologist and the coach drivers which is not always clear. WiFi is charged for, the system uses the same infrastructure across all the boats so there is contention but generally you can get by. If you want All inclusive book before you go, to upgrade on arrival is simply not a goer the costs are much higher, you couldn’t drink that much. We paid for drinks at the end and it was perfectly ok. The Egyptian wine and Gin is fine, cocktails a bit mixed. We found it all perfectly acceptable and cringed a bit when we heard moaning. The holiday is amazing value, the people lovely and the sights amazing. We then went on to Hurghada for 6 nights.

We've recently returned from a week's Nile cruise on the MS Esadora which we booked through Classic Holidays. What a fabulous time we had! The boat itself is small and certainly not one of the fanciest of the Nile river boats but it was immaculately clean and well appointed. The lads cleaning the cabins did a fabulous job and made us laugh every day with their towel sculpture! All of the staff were fantastic: nothing was too much trouble and they were charming and attentive throughout. The restaurant was pleasant and, although there wasn't an enormous choice of dishes, everything was nicely cooked and tasty. We particularly enjoyed the fantastic range of salads and the Egyptian specialities. Thanks to the fantastic waiters who kept us entertained! We were kept busy with trips every day and these were extremely efficiently organised by Orbital Travel. Our guide (John) was fabulous - knowledgeable and good humoured. We had a fantastic time exploring amazing places. In between the visits, we spent time on the deck, relaxing by the small pool which was really pleasant. It was particularly nice as the boat was sailing and we could see the Nile's banks and the people living there. We didn't take the drinks package on the boat. Drinks were quite expensive - but not outrageous - so we were happy with our decision. There were a couple of niggles - it would be nice to have a bottle of water in the cabin each day and the bathroom drains had a very strange smell in one of our cabins - but overall these were massively outweighed by the positives. We had a fantastic trip and couldn't recommend this cruise highly enough.

Nile Cruise is a must, at least once. I did it, twice over 30 years.. but I wanted my children to have the experience too Every cruise has 4 elements -The quality of the ship and rooms -Service and Staff -The food quality and finally the excursions tour guide We got lucky this time with our ship Esmeralda, is an excellent ship in all categories, almost. We just got unlucky with our tour guide Medhat. He wanted to upsell additional excursions at double the price. It started with hot air balloon where he said the cost is $120, a quick internet search showed it was $65. The sound and light show at $50, where the internet showed it was $13. So we lost confidence from the 1st day, Don't be shy to ask your tour operator to change the guide. We just got unlucky, we have seen the other 4 groups on the ship very happy with their tour guide. Some of them will take you to an alabaster factory, Don't waste time there, and don't buy anything, these are over priced. You could buy in Aswan at half the price or in Cairo. If you are interested in any tours which are not on the standard program , you shout add it in your program in advance, and get a quotation from the office The food quality was surprisingly good. We were on Club-Med Turquoise two weeks before, they are known to have good food. But Esmerelda was even much better. Not a huge variety, but great quality. Many thanks to the chef !! The rooms actually better than the photos on their website. Good size, very clean, lovely bathroom Service was excellent. They clean the rooms twice every day !! Everyone was very polite and helpful. There was a bit of a mess in our 7 rooms reservation, but they did sort it out quickly. I would strongly recommend Esmeralda. It is great value for money. Don't pay double for the extra large rooms with balconies on the other luxury ships like Farah and some others. Nile cruise prices vary a lot depending on the ship and the season. It can get very very hot in the summer. The ships also vary a lot although most of them claim to be 5 stars, but some are not even 3 stars Price vary a lot from $400 to $1400 per person in a double room Remember, Nile cruise is Not like a typical cruise. You hardly spend any time in your room, just to crash between excursions. They kill you with excursions, every day from early morning. You don't want to miss any excursion. They are very interesting and, if you stay behind, you will find your room sandwiched between two ship, as they dock the ships next to each other, as you can read on the other reviews. You will practically have no useful windows much of the time have to keep the blank-out on much of the time. You only enjoy the lovely Nile view while the ship is cursing. The total cruising time is 6+6+4 hrs , some of it , is over night. But when ship is docked, you can use your window b I would very much prefer the 4 days program from Luxor to Aswan, over the 3 days return on the other direction, Specially on winter time. The wind direction is predominantly north west. Going against the cold wind in winter is not recommended, but welcomed in the hot summer of Egypt. Also the 3 nights program is really over packed. You will be on your feet for 12 hrs every day, very tiring Egyptian temples are in the desert. You may need to shower after every excursion, twice a day. Also pack a mosquito repellant and lot of sunblock Finally, a good tip for booking any Nile cruise. Try to book with the owners directly. We spent hours and hours trying to book with agents. They always want to push you towards they ship that give them max commissions. The owners of Esmeralda is Planet tours

Beautiful sights but unfortunately people here think you are a walking ATM: they harass and follow you, you get a different guide at each temple so you have to pay each of them. And they even tell you how much they expect you to tip. I felt like guides didn’t care about me or about giving me a decent tour, they were just after money. Such a shame because the sights were beautiful but the people killed it for me

holidays to egypt nile cruise

On a recent Nile cruise on board the MS Esadora , I purchased a silver cartouche from the jeweller on board , I chose the one with a black background as it made the hieroglyphs stand out more . I was thrilled with my purchase , but after only two weeks the black background turned to a muddy brown colour and then started to flake away , I contacted Classic holidays who we had booked the cruise through and they contacted the boat on my behalf , I sent photos as requested also my contact details that the boat had requested so that the jeweller could contact me directly . That was three weeks ago and the boat nor the jeweller has bothered to get in touch with me , despite many other follow up e mails. I have now given up all hope that they will ever contact me and can now only hope that my reviews on various websites will at least give other passengers on the boat pause for thought when making a purchase . Jewellery is an expensive purchase and I can only advise others not to purchase on board MS Esadora or indeed any of the Orbital travel boats as I expect that they all use the same jewellery makers on shore . I hope that this review saves others the same disappointment that I experienced

The mighty Nile River played a crucial role in the development of ancient Egyptian civilization, and today, it offers a unique way to explore the country’s rich history. A Nile River cruise is an unforgettable experience , providing a luxurious and convenient way to witness some of Egypt’s most remarkable ancient sites.

As you glide along the Nile, you’ll have the opportunity to visit iconic temples and tombs that have stood the test of time.

From the awe-inspiring Philae Temple Complex to the intricate carvings of Edfu Temple , each site offers a glimpse into the grandeur and sophistication of ancient Egyptian architecture.

One of the highlights of a Nile cruise is the chance to explore Luxor , known as the “world’s greatest open-air museum.” Here, you can delve into the Valley of the Kings, where ancient pharaohs were laid to rest, and marvel at the stunning Temple of Queen Hatshepsut , a stunning example of ancient engineering carved into the cliffs.

Throughout your journey, you’ll be treated to the comfort and luxury of a modern riverboat, complete with amenities such as spacious cabins, fine dining, and entertainment. It’s a truly immersive way to experience the wonders of ancient Egypt.

Egypt’s ancient history is also brought to life through captivating performances, such as the whirling dervish dance, a mesmerizing spiritual ritual that dates back centuries. Consider attending a show to witness this captivating display of music, movement, and devotion.

When planning your trip to Egypt, timing is crucial. The best time to visit Egypt is during the cooler months, from October to April, when temperatures are milder and more comfortable for sightseeing. Here are some key factors to consider:

  • The shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer the best balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
  • Peak season brings more tourists, but if that’s your only option, be prepared for the crowds.
  • Summer months in Egypt can be scorching hot, so consider that if you’re particularly heat sensitive.

When planning your trip to Egypt, consider attending major festivals like Ramadan or national holidays, which can impact opening hours and crowd levels at popular attractions.

To help you, I’ve created a guide covering everything you need to know while Visiting Egypt During Ramadan: Insider Guide to Celebration .

Before embarking on your Egyptian adventure, it’s essential to understand the visa requirements and travel costs. Check the visa requirements for your nationality well in advance. Many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egyptian airports, but it’s best to confirm and be prepared. The visa fee is generally around $25 USD.

As for the trip to Egypt cost is relatively affordable compared to other popular destinations. You can expect to spend around $50-$100 per day for a mid-range traveler, including accommodation, food, transportation, and entry fees to major attractions. Here’s a rough estimate of some common expenses:

  • Airfare: $500-$1,000 roundtrip from major U.S. cities
  • Mid-range hotel: $50-$100 per night
  • Budget hotel: $20-$50 per night
  • Meals: $10-$25 per day (street food and casual restaurants)
  • Transportation: $5-$10 per day (for taxis and public transport)
  • Entrance fees: $10-$25 per site (e.g., pyramids, temples, museums)

To save money, consider staying in budget-friendly accommodations. A wide range of options exist, from budget hostels to luxurious hotels. Eating at local street food stalls and local eateries is incredibly affordable, and you’ll find delicious meals for just a few dollars. When exploring attractions, transportation like local buses and taxis is budget-friendly. Consider a Nile Cruise package for an all-inclusive experience.

Here are some unique adventures that you must experience when traveling to Egypt.

  • Soar over Luxor in a hot air balloon for breathtaking views of temples and the Valley of the Kings at sunrise-a true bucket list moment!
  • Camel rides near the Pyramids are a popular choice, but it’s important to be aware of the ethical concerns. To learn more, check out this article, Why A Camel Ride in Egypt Commands a Conflicting Ethical Decision delves into this complex topic.
  • Immerse yourself in Islamic Cairo. Discover its rich history and architectural beauty at the magnificent Al-Azhar Mosque.
  • No trip to Egypt is complete without sampling the delicious local cuisine! Try  koshari  (a hearty mix of rice, lentils, and pasta),  falafel  (chickpea fritters), and don’t forget stuffed pigeon – an Egyptian delicacy.

Planning a trip to Egypt can raise a lot of questions, so we’ve compiled some frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your journey.

Egypt is generally safe for tourists, especially when traveling with a reputable tour company or guide. However, it’s always important to exercise caution, be aware of your surroundings, and follow the advice of local authorities.

For long-distance travel, consider taking domestic flights or booking a Nile River cruise. Within cities, taxis and public transportation are affordable and convenient options. Hiring a private driver or tour guide can also make navigating Egypt more comfortable.

While it’s possible to explore some sites independently, booking guided tours in advance can provide invaluable insights and ensure a smoother experience. Guided tours are highly recommended for complex sites like the pyramids, Valley of the Kings, and ancient temples.

It’s important to dress modestly when visiting religious sites or Islamic mosques. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Women may also want to carry a scarf to cover their heads when entering mosques.

No specific vaccinations are required for most travelers, but it’s always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider before your trip. Ensure your routine vaccinations are up-to-date, and consider getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid fever. Bringing insect repellent and staying hydrated are also recommended.

Yes, most nationalities require a visa to visit Egypt. However, the process is relatively straightforward, and there are a couple of ways to obtain one:

Visa on Arrival: Citizens of many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egypt’s international airports. The process involves filling out a form, paying a fee (typically around $25 USD, payable in cash), and having a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

E-Visa: For added convenience, many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa in advance through the official Egyptian government portal ([invalid URL removed]). The process is entirely online and typically takes a few days for approval.

Important Notes:

Specific Requirements:  Always double-check the visa requirements for your specific nationality, as there may be variations. Some countries may have additional requirements or longer processing times.

Visa Validity:  The most common tourist visa for Egypt is valid for 30 days. If you plan to stay longer, consider applying for a multiple-entry visa or inquire about visa extensions upon arrival.

Resources:  For official visa information and updates, visit the Egyptian government website or consult your nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

By following this expert Egypt travel guide, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and insider tips to plan an extraordinary journey through Cairo and the heart of ancient Egyptian civilization, Nile.

Egypt promises to leave a lasting impression and will surely capture your heart. So, pack your sense of adventure, embrace the rich culture, and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to this bucket list-worthy destination.
