HAMILTON MAKES ITS ASIAN PREMIERE IN MANILA

HAMILTON is NOW PLAYING at the Theatre at Solaire in Manila, Philippines!

Filipino audiences have patiently waited for the cultural phenomenon to arrive since long before creator Lin-Manuel Miranda announced the production’s arrival in March this year.

Since HAMILTON began performances on 17 September at Manila’s Theatre at Solaire, audiences have been abuzz with excitement upon finally seeing the production live, at home, in its Asian Premiere season as part of the show’s first ever international tour.

#Hamilfans and the Philippines’ biggest names alike glammed up to grace the red carpet for the show’s Gala Night on 21 September. Fans were also treated to an exclusive Manila #Hamilfans event the day prior, in which fans joined forces with cast members to play games – including local hit Pinoy Henyo – and hear from the cast in a very special Q&A.

The international tour sees an incredible cast made up of performers from around the world, including alumni from HAMILTON companies in Australia, the West End, Broadway, North American tours and the German production in Hamburg.

Announced to great anticipation in July, the international tour company is led by Jason Arrow as Alexander Hamilton, the Philippines’ very own Rachelle Ann Go as Eliza Hamilton, DeAundre’ Woods as Aaron Burr, Akina Edmonds as Angelica Schuyler, Darnell Abraham as George Washington, David Park as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Shaka Bagadu Cook as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, Jacob Guzman as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton, Elandrah Eramiha as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds and Brent Hill as King George.

The company of 34 performers is completed by Claire Abaijah-Griffin , Kirrah Amosa , Curtis Angus , Kyla Bartholomeusz , Taylor Broadard , Trey Curtis ,  Lachlan Dearing , Winston Hillyer , Indigo Hunt , Marcus John , Julian Kuo , Iosefa Laga’aia , Ashton Lash , HaNy Lee , Terrance Martin , Trevor Miles , Eliza Ohman , Callan Purcell , Joshua Rivera , Wesley Ryan , Emmy Saheki , Terrance Spencer and Dayton Tavares .

HAMILTON has also launched Manila’s first ever ticket lottery, in which Filipino audiences can win the opportunity to purchase tickets at just PhP 800 each through TicketWorld.

Following Manila, the production heads to Abu Dhabi in January of 2024. Tickets are available for the Abu Dhabi season through Etihad Arena.

'Hamilton' in Manila, a visual and sensory feast

Jason Arrow (right) and Rachelle Anne Go on Hamilton

Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton: An American Musical masterfully weaves the imperfect tapestry of Alexander Hamilton's life into a breathtaking theatrical production.

The genius of this musical lies in its ability to take a story riddled with flaws, political controversies, and personal imperfections, and transform it into a flawless piece of art.

From the opening notes, Hamilton immerses the audience in a world where complex characters grapple with their ambitions, principles, and the consequences of their actions.

Alexander Hamilton, brilliantly portrayed by Jason Arrow, is far from a flawless hero.

His unrelenting drive, sharp wit, and determination are juxtaposed with his arrogance, impulsiveness, and moral ambiguities. Yet, it is precisely these imperfections that make him a compelling protagonist.

The production's genius extends beyond its portrayal of Hamilton.

It gives equal weight to the imperfections of other historical figures, such as Thomas Jefferson played by David Park and Aaron Burr played by DeAundre Woods. Both are brought to life by phenomenal performances.

The Philippine run marks the triumphant return of Pinoy pride Rachelle Anne Go , who delivers an outstanding portrayal of Eliza Hamilton, Alexander's wife.

The theater actress gave birth to her second baby in March, and is still "nursing" so she brought the entire family—husband Martin Spies , son Lukas Judah, and baby Sela Teruah—to Manila.

PRODUCTION VALUE

As the characters' lives unfold on stage, the audience is treated to a musical score that marries hip-hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes in a harmonious blend.

The songs are not just catchy; they serve as a lyrical reflection of the characters' inner turmoil and societal issues.

Miranda's lyrics are a triumph of storytelling, filled with wordplay and historical references that reward attentive listeners.

The set design, choreography, and costume choices further elevate the production.

The rotating stage, intricate dance sequences, and period-appropriate attire transport the audience to the late 18th century.

It's a visual and sensory feast that adds layers of depth to the narrative.

In the end, Hamilton is a testament to the power of art to transcend imperfections.

It takes the tumultuous life of Alexander Hamilton, a man flawed like any other, and crafts it into an exquisite narrative that celebrates both his accomplishments and his failures.

The musical reminds us that history is rarely a tale of perfect heroes, but a complex interplay of ambition, morality, and circumstance.

In its imperfection, Hamilton finds its perfection.

It encourages us to examine the flawed aspects of our own lives and society while celebrating the extraordinary potential for greatness that exists within us all.

This musical is a masterpiece not because it tells a flawless story, but because it brilliantly captures the essence of the imperfect human experience, and in doing so, it achieves perfection on the stage.

On September 21, 2023, at the Theater at Solaire, a constellation of celebrities walks the red carpet to witness Hamilton in Manila , the inaugural Asian tour.

It will run until November 26 at the Theater at Solaire.

Blow Us All Away: ‘Hamilton’ Makes Its Asia Debut In Manila

BY Pilar Gonzalez

Jason Arrow and Rachelle Anne Go, who play Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler respectively, share their thoughts ahead of the hit musical’s opening night in Manila.

Last March, GMG Productions —the company that’s brought numerous prestigious musical productions to the Philippines—posted a short video of Lin-Manuel Miranda that got Filipino theater fans buzzing. “ Kamusta Philippines? What’s up dude, pare ?” said the Tony-award winning artist. An official announcement shortly followed, confirming that Miranda’s sensational musical, Hamilton , would be going on its first ever international tour with shows in the Philippines . What’s more, the hit production is making its Asia debut in none other than Metro Manila’s The Theater at Solaire from September to November.

After months of anticipation and ticket purchases, fans can now experience the show themselves. On the evening of September 17, an exhilarated first audience welcomed the Tony, Grammy, Olivier, and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical. This comes shortly before the production’s grand opening night on September 21 (Thursday).

“Good things come to those who wait, and I know Hamilton ’s Filipino fans have been waiting patiently for this moment to arrive,” stated Michael Cassel AM, producer of Hamilton ’s international tour, in a press release. “The Manila audiences responded with such warmth, enthusiasm and generosity—we couldn’t be more thrilled and we are ecstatic to bring the revolution to Asia for the very first time.”

Some members of the main cast also sat with the press to share their thoughts and insights in light of their Manila debut. Namely Jason Arrow (Alexander Hamilton), Rachelle Anne Go (Eliza Schuyler), DeAundre’ Woods (Aaron Burr), Akina Edmonds (Angelica Schuyler), and Darnell Abraham (George Washington).

A World-Class Theatrical Experience

“This cast for the international tour represents the very best talent from Hamilton productions all around the world. We have cast members from the most recent production in Australia, […] West End, and Broadway, as well as the production in Hamburg, Germany,” shared Cassel in his opening remarks during the press event. A total tour company of 34 performers comprise this talented group.

Meanwhile, Filipina performer Rachelle Ann Go, will be reprising her role as Hamilton’s wife Eliza Schuyler—which she originally played in London’s West End.

Joining them are DeAundre’ Woods as Aaron Burr, Akina Edmonds as Angelica Schuyler, Darnell Abraham as George Washington, David Park as Marquis de LafayeLe/Thomas Jefferson, Shaka Bagadu Cook as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, Jacob Guzman as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton, Elandrah Eramiha as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, and Brent Hill as King George.

Alexander Hamilton

Producers Jeffrey Seller and Michael Cassel AM felt that casting Jason Arrow as Alexander Hamilton was a “natural decision.”

“Jason’s nuanced, thoughtful, and searing rendition of Alexander Hamilton has been beloved by audiences throughout Australia and New Zealand, we are thrilled that he will continue bringing his sensational performance to audiences around the world in Hamilton ’s international tour,” shared Cassel in a press release.

As for Arrow, the upcoming shows in Manila will not only mark his first performances in the Philippines, but also his first with many cast members. When Lifestyle Asia asked what makes the experience so different compared to his past productions, Arrow shared: “It depends on who’s on stage. It kind of changes the show’s dynamics.”

“I’ve worked with Akina [Edmonds] before, but everyone else you see on this table [Go, Woods, and Abraham], it’s a first time for me. So it definitely changes how you interpret the show and how your character evolves throughout [it],” Arrow continued. “So for me, it’s not necessarily where the show is—though that plays into it as well—but the people you’re doing it with.”

Being in the Philippines has also been a new and exciting experience for Arrow, who speaks highly of the warm hospitality, kindness, and the innate musicality of Filipinos.

The Schuyler Sister

Filipina performer Rachelle Ann Go made headlines when she got the part of Eliza Schuyler in Hamilton ’s West End production. Hamilton’s compassionate wife is arguably the beating heart of the show with her compelling character arc and role within the narrative (but no spoilers here for first-time viewers of the musical).

Go’s singing prowess is undeniable, as she’s no stranger to belting high notes and delivering touching performances. She starred in a number of local and international musical productions like The Little Mermaid, Tarzan the Musical, Miss Saigon , and Les Misérables . On top of that, she also appeared in various TV shows, produced her own songs, and sang in special charity concerts.

Rachelle Ann Go during the press conference

During the press conference, Lifestyle Asia asked Go how she felt reprising her role as Eliza Schuyler in the country where she was born and raised in.

“This is a dream come true for me. I was actually telling some of my friends, back in 2017 when I did this role in West End, that I had a feeling Hamilton would be coming to the Philippines. For some reason, I just had that vision,” Go told Lifestyle Asia . “And I told myself, ‘I’m going to do this role in the Philippines,’ and here I am doing it in front of our kababayans .” Go also discussed how elated she is to return home and spend time with members of her family.

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story

Hamilton ’s huge success is due in part to its timeless story. Since its first show in 2015, the production has gained millions of fans around the world. This seems peculiar for a musical so steeped in a particular historical context, namely the story of American immigrant and political figure Alexander Hamilton.

The three Schuyler sisters in London's West End production

Yet the appeal of the production lies not in specificity, but rather, the universality of its central narrative. Its characters paint complex portraits of the human condition, creating a work that resonates with all kinds of audiences. As Arrow shared during the press conference, the play is but a vehicle for something far bigger and deeper than a history lesson.

Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton

Hamilton made waves with its diverse cast, who’ve changed the way stories are told—and of course, who tells them. Lin-Manuel Miranda also redefined what a musical could be with his production’s eclectic yet refreshing mix of hip-hop, jazz, and R&B songs that seamlessly combine with classic Broadway melodies.

L-R: Darnell Abraham, Jason Arrow, Rachelle Ann Go, Akina Edmonds, and Deaundre' Woods

But, don’t just take our word for it; as with any theatrical performance, Hamilton is a phenomenon best experienced in person, and it looks like audiences are in for quite the show.

Hamilton’s opening night will take place on the evening of September 21 at The Theater at Solaire, with shows running from September to November. The Manila season is presented by the Michael Cassel Group and GMG Productions. For news and updates, you may visit the international tour’s official website , Instagram , and Facebook .

Philippines was the ‘natural choice’ for the Asian premiere of ‘Hamilton’

HAMILTON MANILA. Cast members Darnell Abraham, Jason Arrow, Rachelle Ann Go, Akina Edmonds, and DeAundre' Woods during the show's press conference on September 20 at the Theater at Solaire.

YSA ABAD/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Theater enthusiasts and fans of Hamilton rejoiced when the award-winning musical announced that they were finally coming to the Philippines. Many thought it was about time the show be brought into the country, and the producers also agreed – even adding that the decision to bring Hamilton to Manila had been locked down a few years back.

Saying that the show’s Asian debut has been a “long time in the making,” Michael Cassel, producer of the Hamilton international tour, recalled that he and original Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller had been talking about launching an international tour just shortly after the show premiered on Broadway.

“In fact, it was in September 2015 – about a month after the show debuted back on Broadway – that I met with Jeffrey in New York City. It was then when we started talking about plans for sharing this incredible musical with audiences around the world.”

“He asked me, ‘Where do we start the show?’ And I said,  the only place to start the international tour would be the Philippines.”

With book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton tells the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton through music that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and show tunes.

Since it opened on Broadway in August 2015, it has won Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Awards, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Aside from Broadway, the show was also brought to London’s West End, Australia, Germany, and New Zealand.

For its Manila leg, Hamilton will be staged at the Theater at Solaire for more than two months between September 17 and November 26, with no further extensions possible.

“We were overwhelmed with the responses that we received from the audiences here,” Michael told Filipino media in a press conference on Wednesday, September 20, sharing that a friend even told him that there were screams and cheers when the announcement for the Manila shows went live on social media.

Michael said they’re “beyond thrilled” at how warm and enthusiastic the Filipino audience are with the shows, especially that they were a “little nervous but excited” when they made the announcement. For the producers, it’s proof that they made the right call in choosing Manila as the first stop for the show’s Asian premiere.

“You have amazing audiences that embrace musical theater,” Michael said. “And so, it’s a natural choice that the company will be assembled for the very first time here in Manila.”

For the Manila shows, Michael said that they assembled the “very best talent” from Hamilton talent productions from all over the world. Jason Arrow plays titular character Alexander Hamilton, DeAundre’ Woods is Aaron Burr, Akina Edmons is Angelica Schuyler, Darnell Abraham is George Washington, and the Philippines’ Rachelle Ann Go is Eliza Hamilton.

Rachelle on reprising the role of Eliza

Calling it a “dream come true,” Rachelle told the Filipino press that she’s been hoping for Hamilton to come to the Philippines since she first played the role of Eliza Schuyler-Hamilton almost six years ago. Her performance there won her a Best Actress award from BroadwayWorld UK.

“I was actually telling my friends that back in 2017, when I did this role in the West End, I had a feeling that Hamilton would be coming to the Philippines. For some reason, I just had the vision. And I told myself I’m going to do this role in the Philippines. And here I am, doing it in front of our kababayan (fellowmen.)”

“This is such a dream come true,” Rachelle said, adding that it’s “nice to be home” and with her family.

Aside from playing for the Filipino audience, the actress also couldn’t help but get sentimental over how much she’s grown since she first portrayed Eliza.

“I believe I was a totally different person back then. Now, I am a mom of two,” she said.

Relating her experience as a mom to a scene from the play that she feels strongly for, Rachelle said that she really gets emotional when she thinks of the death of her character’s son Phillip.

“Now, I don’t have to dig deeper before I approach the scene. I can be in that moment and feel all the emotions because I know how to be a mom. I know what a mom feels like.”

Such takeaways, she explained, have also shaped her priorities in carrying her character.

“Before, I was just thinking that I need to sing this song perfectly. I need to hit the right notes. Now, it’s not about that. It’s about telling the story and sharing what the musical is about.”

The cast members on working with each other

Jason, who also previously played the lead character Alexander Hamilton in the original Australian cast, also talked about the importance of having a good relationship with other cast members.

“The show’s the same, the mood is the same, the music is the same. It can change fast depending on who’s playing that role though,” he said.

Having experienced working with a different ensemble in the past, Jason emphasized how cast member changes also shaped his approach to portraying his role.

“It definitely changes how you interpret the show. It changes how your character evolves throughout the show. It’s not necessarily where the show is staged, and while that plays into it as well, but the people you’re doing with it matters. So my Hamilton and Eliza relationship is very different to what has been in the past,” he said.

Rachelle echoed the sentiment, saying that prior to the opening of the Manila shows, they weren’t familiar with each other.

“We really didn’t have any relationship before. But onstage, it just happened. There’s chemistry, and being authentic, and just telling the story. That’s how I felt. And it was amazing. There was just a lot of trust,” she said.

Jason disclosed that they only had a tech week to “get things together.”

“But there was a lot of trust. And I think we knew we had a job to do as well, and that’s what keeps you going. And having great scene partners across the board helps that. You really need to have open and honest people on stage.”

The Hamilton cast on the Filipino audience

Apart from Rachelle, it’s the other cast members’ first time in the Philippines. And while they’ve only been in the country for several weeks, they said that they’ve already felt how welcoming Filipinos are.

“So far, the people are incredible. They really want to make sure you’re accommodated in any way, shape, or form,” Akina said.

Darnell, meanwhile, said that he’s looking forward to exploring more about the country’s rich music culture.

“The music culture here is extraordinary, which really inspires me,” he said. “Since this show is very musical and there’s a rich musical history and heritage here [in the Philippines], I think they will certainly connect quite well to the show.”

Aside from the country’s love for music, Darnell also disclosed that he’s “inspired by the resiliency found here in the Philippines,” and how it could resonate with the Hamilton viewers.

“I’m really struck by the history that we were able to share that’s not just unique to the United States, but is also, I think, unique here also in the Philippines,” he said.

Agreeing, DeAundre’ highlighted that theater shows like Hamilton are not just “forms of entertainment, but also of education.”

“That’s what this show does – it challenges us to see things in different light, and to include the heart, and not just the external diversity.”

As for the performing for the Filipino audience, Rachelle admitted that it’s heartwarming to take the stage in her home country.

“Filipinos are very polite. They’re into it. They’re absorbing every single word, every single scene. And just seeing their faces in awe makes my heart throb,” she said. “I guess that’s the difference between performing here and abroad. Just being home itself is already such a gift.” – Rappler.com

ASIA Announces 'The Heat Of The Moment' July 2024 U.S. Tour

ASIA has announced "The Heat of The Moment Tour" , headlined by ASIA and also featuring FOCUS , Martin Turner (ex- WISHBONE ASH ) and CURVED AIR and MC'd by artist Roger Dean .

The trek will commence on July 3, 2024 and will incorporate 21 dates across the USA and Canada.

The tour has been masterminded by rock music keyboard legend and original ASIA member Geoff Downes ( BUGGLES , YES ).

"Asia" was the biggest selling album of 1982, No. 1 on Billboard for nine weeks and pioneers of the MTV era. Downes 's brand new iteration of ASIA first began to evolve last summer at the concert held in memory of late lead singer, songwriter and bassist John Wetton ( KING CRIMSON , ROXY MUSIC , URIAH HEEP , WISHBONE ASH , UK , ASIA , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ). Downes invited old friend John Mitchell ( IT BITES , FROST, LONELY ROBOT , KINO , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ) and newcomer Harry Whitley to join him on stage to celebrate Wetton 's life by performing some of the classic ASIA hits. Such was the uproarious reception to their set, that Downes wondered if something magical was beginning to take shape.

"And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much ASIA 's music belongs on the stage," Geoff said. "The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling."

Downes 's new-look ASIA will once again feature Mitchell on guitars and Whitley on lead vocal and bass. The quartet will be made complete by the addition of Virgil Donati ( UK , SOUTHERN SONS , STEVE VAI , ALLAN HOLDSWORTH ) on drums.

Downes continues: "With the addition of Virgil Donati and John Mitchell , two of the finest musicians in the world in their respective classes, this is almost going full circle bearing in mind their previous close collaborations with John W . Completing this circle is also the amazing Harry Whitley who absolutely floored the audience with his incredible vocal interpretation of the ASIA songs that John W and I so lovingly wrote over the years."

The tour will also feature sets from other classic acts FOCUS , Turner and CURVED AIR . All three support acts boast their founder bandleaders and have deservedly attained the status of legend.

FOCUS will release a brand new studio album later in 2024. Led by the indomitable Sir Thijs Van Leer , it features original 1970s drummer Pierre Van Der Linden , plus the virtuoso talents of Menno Gootjes on guitar and Udo Pannekeet on bass.

Martin Turner was lead vocalist, bassist, founding member and creative force behind 1970s rock music behemoth WISHBONE ASH , best known for such classic albums as "Argus" and "Pilgrimage" .

Formed in 1970, CURVED AIR are one of the founders of progressive rock and a retrospective collection of their most influential and ground-breaking material is currently in the planning stages. Sonja Kristina (vocals) and Kirby Gregory (guitar) will treat audiences to an acoustic set featuring some of the band's most memorable musical moments. They will be joined by violinist Grzegorz Gadziomski .

Each performance on the tour will be MC'd by legendary artist Roger Dean . For so many, Dean 's artwork is synonymous with the music of the time and stands to represent the very best of British rock music.

The final word goes to Geoff Downes : "I am convinced that John 's [ Wetton ] spirit is with us as we set out on this new adventure. After all, it is the Year Of The Dragon — just as it was in 1982, when we released our first ASIA album. It's as though it was meant to be. Looking forward to seeing you there, my friends — bring it on!”
