Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Do you have anyone in your party who would roll their eyes at the thought of an afternoon in a museum? Vizcaya Gardens will quickly dissuade them of that notion. 

This gem is the center stone in a 1916 National Historic Landmark. It's so remarkable, you could never cover it in a day. The gardens span 10 acres and the estate has 32 immaculately-decorated rooms for you to explore. 

Everything here has an Italian Renaissance flair, which is very befitting of a city as colorful as Miami. More specifically, if you've ever had Venice on your mind, you'll appreciate the Venetian flair that dazzles the entire estate. 

When you're ready for a little sustenance after your exploration, take the seven-minute drive to Bayshore Club for a fantastic meal overlooking the water. 

Little Havana

Cuban culture is one of the brightest colors in an already-vibrant Latin culture. As you step out of Venice, consider cha-cha-ing up to Little Havana. 

Here, you'll taste Cuban dishes as authentic as the actual streets of Havana. Truthfully, you could walk into any one of these restaurants and walk out of them feeling satisfied. 

If you're a coffee aficionado, it will come as no surprise that the coffee served within these streets is incomparable. Just be prepared for it to be strong enough for a spoon to stand up and dance in. 

Shortly, we'll explore what to do in Miami with kids. So, this may be a nice morning pitstop before you wrangle everyone for a fun-filled day in one of America's best vacation destinations .

Bayfront Park is to Miami what Central Park is to New York. Of course, Central Park is 25 times the size of Bayfront Park. But, it still poses the same question: how can so many green acres exist amid such a metropolis?

Located in Downtown Miami, you'll be able to soak up stunning views of Biscayne Bay, as well as the city skylines. Somehow, Miami has managed to beautifully blend the urban and the tropical in this gorgeous greenscape; it's worth every bit of time spent within its nonexistent walls.

Jungle Island

Zoo Miami is your main attraction if you'd like to take the family on this kind of excursion. But, for something that could be classified as a hidden gem, by comparison, head for Jungle Island , instead. 

They've expertly interwoven the beauty of Miami's tropical landscape with the thrills of the jungle. You'll enjoy plenty of animal encounters – including lemurs and sloths, more gardens to stroll through, and oodles of activities that answer the question of what to do with kids in Miami. 

Matheson Hammock Park

A hammock park in paradise – does it get any better than that? If you're with the kiddos, it might be difficult to get them to chill and swing in the air for a few hours. But, if you're flying solo or enjoying a couple's trip, this is a nice pitstop along the way. 

That said, there’s an unusual feature here that everyone could enjoy: a man-made atoll pool with naturally flushing waters thanks to the tidal action of Biscayne Bay. With proper supervision, this could still be a fun day for all. The windswept breezes that stroll through this park along with its vivacious waterside views make this one for the books. 

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)

When thunderstorms hit (which are very likely on a summer afternoon in Florida), there are plenty of opportunities to head indoors and make some new memories. Miami has some of the finest museums and theaters to enthrall you. 

In answer to the question of what to do in Downtown Miami, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) exists for the contemporary art lovers in the house. They dedicate their efforts to curating international art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Tickets are reasonably priced at $18 for adults and $14 for children if you have mini art lovers in the making. 

Wynwood Miami

With art in mind, you might want to head over to Wynwood next. It's Miami's globally-recognized art district that's sure to leave you feeling inspired. Basically, it's one giant art installation.

If you've been wondering what to do in Wynwood, Miami, the answer is simple: wander. Start at the Wynwood Walls, an outdoor art exhibition. Then, head over to the Bakehouse Art Complex, a community art space housed in a gorgeous Art Deco building. 

From there, you'll want to see The Margulies Collection at The Warehouse and support their nonprofit efforts. Within their 50,000-square-foot space, you'll also be able to partake in their educational programs and special exhibitions.  

Miami Children's Museum

Miami Children's Museum knows how to treat the kiddos to a most spectacular display. If one of the rainy days throughout your trip happens to fall on a Monday, take them over to Mini Mondays. You'll all enjoy activities like Easel Play, Cooking Play, Music Play, and more. 

To complete a cultural circle, you can even catch a show from the museum’s in-house theater troupe. This is a great way to encourage your little ones to embrace cultural immersion, especially if that’s something that floats your boat. Miami could be the place where you instill a great love that turns into a lifelong family affair.

The Kampong

In case you didn't get your garden fix in Vizcaya or Jungle Island, make one more stop at The Kampong . This is a nine-acre stunner on the edge of Biscayne Bay in the Coconut Grove neighborhood, open Tuesday through Friday. 

Here, you'll follow in the footsteps of the beloved plant explorer David Fairchild who once called The Kampong his home. It's still an active plant research center so, when you visit, you'll officially become a plant explorer yourself! To do this right, sign up for one of their guided tours and walk away more informed than you were yesterday. 

Perhaps you'll use this experience as a tie-in to a trip to The Lion City. Therein, you'll find Kampong Glen, one of Singapore's oldest urban quarters.

Detectives investigate man’s murder in Dania Beach

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A man died during a shooting early Saturday morning in Dania Beach, deputies said.

According to Gerdy St. Louis, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies learned about the shooting at about 4:50 a.m. and found the man shot in the area of Southwest 10 Street.

The BSO crime scene was between Phippen Waiters Road and J.A. Ely Boulevard, just west of the Woodlawn Cemetery. Broward County Sheriff Fire Rescue personnel pronounced the man dead.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.

Florida middle, high schools to start later but not till next year

In May 2023, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law  requiring later start times for middle and high schools  throughout Florida.

The law prevents middle schools from beginning the “instructional day” earlier than 8 a.m., while high schools will be barred from starting the school day before 8:30 a.m.

The later start times will be required by the 2026-2027 school year. The law gave school districts three years to develop plans to implement the changes to the start times.

Save on school supplies during Florida tax-free weeks

Florida's 14-day back-to-school sales tax holiday  started Monday, July 29, and runs through Aug. 11, 2024, for clothing, footwear, and backpacks costing $100 or less, school supplies costing $50 or less, learning aids costing $30 or less, and personal computers or computer-related accessories, including non-recreational software, costing $1,500 or less.

Kamala Harris Florida campaign looks to extend interest surge, attention through convention

Vice President Kamala Harris ' Florida campaign said Friday that it will seek to extend almost a month's worth of momentum into next week's Democratic National Convention in Chicago with a series of events across the Sunshine State.

The so-called "Week of Action" will include 40 events across Florida and will culminate with four watch parties when Harris delivers her nomination acceptance speech on Aug. 22.

There will be two dozen voter outreach opportunities, from phone banks to university canvassing to so-called "cat cafes," gatherings aimed as a dig at GOP vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance's disparaging comments about the political engagement and voting by women who do not have children.

They will also include 10 community events such as roundtable talks with LGBTQ, Hispanic, Caribbean, and African-American voter groups and streetside “honk & waves” in South Florida. And a return to The Villages with a day's worth of "training, organizing, volunteer sign-ups" in the conservative older voter bastion where a golf cart parade in support of the Harris-Walz ticket weeks ago went viral on social media.

“Over our week of action, Team Harris-Walz is hosting more than forty events in Florida alone to turn the energy and momentum on the ground into action and votes," said Jasmine Burney Clark, the Florida director for the Harris-Walz campaign. "Florida is a critical state and we are doing the work here to reach every voter and get the word out about the contrast between the Vice President’s positive vision for the future and the threat Trump’s extreme Project 2025 agenda poses to everyone in the Sunshine state.”

Polls point to a tighter race in Florida between Trump and Harris

The lineup of events comes as polls suggest the contest between Harris and former President Donald Trump has tightened in Florida, which has been a MAGA bellwether for the past five years since Trump officially relocated his residency to the state in 2019 and throughout Gov. Ron DeSantis' tenure in Tallahassee.

This week, a poll by USA TODAY and Suffolk University put Harris at five points behind Trump in the state. But a Florida Atlantic University-Mainstreet Research voter survey placed Trump just three points ahead of his Democratic rival among likely voters, and just two points when alternative candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was added to the choices. Another poll, by the conservative lobbying group Associated Industries of Florida, had Trump leading Harris by much wider gap, 8 points. And one voter survey, this one focused on Miami-Dade County, showed Harris faring better than Biden in 2020.

"Increasingly, since Harris got in the race, this thing has tightened quite a bit," said FAU pollster Kevin Wagner, who noted that a poll they conducted last month showed Harris trailing Trump in Florida by anywhere from 6 to 8 points. "It suggests that, at least for now, this has become a very competitive race, even in a state like Florida that has a Republican lean."

Wagner, an associate dean at FAU, added that looking "underneath the numbers" reveals that Harris has managed to bring back traditional Democratic blocs and is now polling more than 90% support among her party rank-and-file.

Pollsters, strategists and analysts still disagreement whether Florida is "in play" for the Harris-Walz ticket. But the a robust campaign in the state could be boon for down ballot races, including the U.S. Senate seat, a number of constitutional amendments, some state legislative races and key local government contests.

Surge in Harris-Walz volunteers fueled by women, campaign says

Officials for the Harris-Walz campaign in Florida have been touting a surge of grassroots enthusiasm for the ticket in Florida. Since Harris entered the race on July 21, the same date President Joe Biden ended his bid for the nomination, the campaign touts more than 22,000 Floridians have signed up to volunteer.

On Aug. 11, nearly 600 of them attended a training session in the Tallahassee area. Two weeks before, 100 attended a phone bank effort in Delray Beach.

The wave of new volunteers, they said, has been "predominantly driven by women, who make up a striking two-thirds of our volunteer base."

"These women are stepping up in unprecedented numbers to make phone calls, knock on doors, organize events, and galvanize their communities in support of the campaign," the campaign said in a statement.

Harris had planned to campaign in Trump's Palm Beach County backyard in mid-July, but the visit was postponed after the July 13 mass shooting and assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania.
