No precautions can eliminate the risk of exposure to COVID-19, and the risk of exposure applies to everyone. According to public health authorities, older adults (people 65 years and older) and people of any age who have underlying medical conditions are at higher risk for severe illness and death from COVID-19. For cancellations, amounts paid, minus cancellation fees and other amounts owed, will be promptly refunded. Disney Cruise Line reserves the right to restrict any changes to a reservation. All changes are subject to availability. Please note that changes made to overall party size may result in a change to the rate.

Any credit regarding refund of the Disney Cruise Line reservation will be in U.S. Dollars and to Guest's credit card used for purchase. The credit card company will proceed with the conversion of the U.S. Dollar amount to local currency, which will be calculated according to the exchange rate applied by the Guest's credit card company/bank.

If a reservation is cancelled by Disney Cruise Line prior to commencement of the cruise, Disney Cruise Line shall have no responsibility beyond the refund of monies paid related to the cruise that was cancelled by Disney Cruise Line without offset for cancellation fees imposed by Disney Cruise Line. Cruise line customers still waiting for refunds

A choice survey of 4443 consumers reveals many cruise ship refunds have yet to arrive..

Fact-checked

Checked for accuracy by our qualified fact-checkers and verifiers. Find out more about fact-checking at CHOICE .

Need to know

  • Cruise line customers are entitled to whatever refund is outlined in the terms and conditions of their agreements
  • Many customers we've heard from say they were promised refunds that have yet to come through
  • Future cruise credits that expire at the end of 2021 could see customers caught in a 'no-refund' loop

According to an industry insider who got in touch with us in early March, the cruise ship industry had somewhere between $700 and $800 million in Australian bookings sitting with cruise companies around the world when cruising came to a stop in early 2020.

With COVID shutting down travel, many Australians who handed over those dollars never boarded a vessel or got their money back, and many are still trying.

'We may never get this chance again'

About $10,000 was paid by Christine and her partner, one of the 4443 respondents to a travel cancellation survey we ran earlier this year. (The payment was for a cruise package including accommodation and flights.)

She had travel insurance before she booked, but she still hasn't got her money back.

"We are both age pensioners, 77 and 83 years old," Christie told us. "It was to be the trip of a lifetime as neither of us have ever been on a cruise. We have never spent that amount on a holiday and the money had been left to me on my mother's death. We may never get this chance again."

They refused to give us a breakdown of where money went. We had an automated response to our last email with no reply afterwards Cruise customer Cathy

Both have health problems that make mobility increasingly challenging.

Irene booked a cruise from Singapore to London for her 80th birthday as part of a larger tour. Then COVID-19arrived and travel was off the cards. Irene also had travel insurance but has yet to receive a refund. She describes the process of trying to get one as "impossible and extremely stressful".

Cathy's in the same boat, so to speak. She had two cruises lined up with MSC cruises and paid a $7000 deposit for the first one. She says she's had "minimal replies, nor any monies returned from them whatsoever".

"We had a rude reception from cruise staff, who were very unhelpful," Cathy says. "They refused to give us a breakdown of where money went. We had an automated response to our last email with no reply afterwards."

Many customers whose cruises were cancelled are worried they won't be able to sail before their credits expire.

Cathy* tells us she booked with Princess cruises for a May voyage with friends down the south coast of WA in January 2020.

"We received an email saying we would get a full refund plus a credit for the hassle but have yet to receive either," she says. She too has travel insurance, but it would only cover a quarter of what she's lost. She's still waiting for the refund. (*Not her real name.)

John, who had five cruises booked back to back, is $30,000 out of pocket.

In some cases, however, cruise lines did the right thing, setting a standard that few seem to have followed.

- Some cruise lines have gone into receivership, making refunds a long shot - Customers are being referred back to agents who organised the trip - Travel agencies have gone out of business - Travel insurance doesn't apply because customers cancelled - Banks declining chargebacks - Insurance claims denied due to pandemic or other exclusions

Future cruise credits – are they usable?

On paper, at least, the refund policies for the cruise lines depend on the length of the cruise along with other factors. Generally, the farther out before departure that you cancel a cruise, the more likely you'll be entitled to a refund.

As the departure date approaches, you'll likely get less and less of your money back.

Despite what the policies say, however, many customers are still waiting for whatever refund they're entitled to.

Clients may still be holding [credits] that are going to expire soon… such as by the end 2021, when no sailing is likely to occur

The alternative to a refund is a future cruise credit, or FCC, which nearly all cruise lines are offering.

But there's a problem, the industry source says: "When the credits were issued, communication was patchy and not all Ts and Cs were visible to the consumer when they signed up. The time frames to use the credits were short."

"Clients may still be holding FCCs that are going to expire soon or may be applicable to a short window, such as by the end 2021, when no sailing is likely to occur," the source continued. "We have seen some cruise lines extend these, but it is not uniform."

Further cancellations

Customers who have already traded in their credits for a cruise scheduled this year could be looking at further cancellations, the source says.

"So there will be cancellations on new trips, and many cruise lines are not offering refunds on these trips. The only remedy is for another future cruise credit.

"There will be consumers who feel like they didn't have full visibility of the Ts & Cs at the time and are now caught up in a 'never refund' option with some cruise lines."

Customers of cancelled cruises have been subjected to extensive runarounds when trying to get their money back.

What the regulator says

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says the terms and conditions in your cruise agreement dictate your rights, but adds that the Australian Consumer Law is "unlikely to apply to cancellations as a direct result of government restrictions. This may impact the remedies available to consumers".

But our survey results suggest that not all cruise lines are honouring their Ts & Cs, at least not in a timely fashion.

If you're cruise had been cancelled

  • The ACCC "expects that consumers will receive a refund or other remedy, such as a credit note or voucher in most circumstances".
  • If your Ts & Cs or the business say you had a right to a refund when you booked, the cruise line must honour this.
  • Keep any communications with the business and contact them directly to request a remedy. This may be a refund or credit note or voucher, depending on your circumstances.
  • Future cruise credits should have an expiration date long enough to allow you to use them.

Making travel credits fairer

Many travel providers have offered credits or vouchers in lieu of what their customers were hoping for – an actual refund.

At the moment, the terms and conditions of these credits vary from provider to provider, and some will likely expire before they can be used. As part of our call for a cleanup of the travel industry's approach to cancellations, we've laid out what we think should be the minimum requirements for all travel vouchers, regardless of who issues them.

  • A minimum term of three years before expiration.
  • The ability to transfer the credit or voucher to another person.
  • The ability to split credits over multiple bookings.
  • An obligation on travel and tourism businesses to convert credits or vouchers to a refund in certain circumstances including at the expiration of the term.
  • An obligation to treat bookings made with credits or vouchers in the same way as bookings paid for in cash.

If you find yourself in a situation where you need to cancel your Disney Cruise due to COVID-19, it is important to understand the cancellation policy and any applicable fees. Disney Cruise Line allows for cancellations up to the day before embarkation, and guests will receive a future cruise credit for the full amount of their original fare. This credit can be used towards a future Disney Cruise within a specific timeframe. It is recommended to contact Disney Cruise Line directly or visit their official website for the most up-to-date information on their cancellation policy and procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

How much do you lose if you cancel a cruise?

When it comes to canceling a Disney Cruise, there are a few factors that determine how much you may lose. Disney Cruise Line’s cancellation policy varies based on the timing of your cancellation and the type of cruise fare you have booked. For cancellations made within a specified time frame, guests may receive a full refund or a future cruise credit. However, closer to the departure date, cancellation fees may apply, which can result in a loss of a percentage of your total cruise fare. It is important to review the specific terms and conditions of your booking and understand the potential financial implications of canceling a Disney Cruise. To learn more about Disney Cruise cancellation policies and fees, you can visit the official Disney Cruise Line website (https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/guest-services/cancellation-policies/) or consult with a travel agent familiar with Disney Cruise Line’s policies.

Disney cruise cancellation policy 2023

Disney Cruise cancellation policy for 2023 allows guests to cancel their reservations and receive a refund under certain conditions. If the cancellation is made more than 120 days prior to the sail date, guests will receive a full refund of their deposit. For cancellations made between 119 and 45 days before the sail date, a cancellation fee will be applied. In summary, understanding the Disney Cruise cancellation policy is crucial for any traveler considering a cruise with this renowned company. By familiarizing yourself with the terms and conditions, you can make informed decisions and be prepared for any unexpected circumstances that may arise.

To begin, it is important to note that Disney Cruise Line offers flexible cancellation options, allowing guests to modify or cancel their reservations without incurring hefty penalties. However, the specific cancellation policy varies depending on the type of cruise package and the timing of the cancellation.

For guests who have booked a standard cruise package, Disney Cruise Line generally follows a tiered cancellation policy based on the number of days prior to the sailing date. If you cancel your reservation more than 120 days before the departure, you will receive a full refund. As the departure date approaches, the cancellation penalties increase. It is advisable to review the cancellation schedule provided by Disney Cruise Line to understand the exact penalties associated with your specific booking.

In some cases, guests may opt for a non-refundable deposit when booking their cruise. This type of reservation typically offers a lower upfront cost but is subject to more stringent cancellation policies. Non-refundable deposits are generally not eligible for any refund or credit if the reservation is canceled. It is crucial to carefully consider the pros and cons of non-refundable deposits before selecting this option.

Additionally, Disney Cruise Line offers travel insurance to protect guests against unforeseen circumstances that may prevent them from embarking on their cruise. Travel insurance can provide coverage for medical emergencies, trip disruptions, and other unexpected events. It is highly recommended to thoroughly review the terms and conditions of the insurance policy to understand the coverage and limitations.

Surprised it took this long. I’ve heard of too many people using the prior policy as “cancel for any reason” coverage. Requiring a positive test makes sense.

Anyone agree with this loyalty programme?

Disney Cruise Refund policy

Cool Cruiser

I'm looking to book 2 rooms for next June. My wife and I in one and my daughter and her 3 kids in the 2nd one.

The dilemma is my wife is currently ill. Our hope is that once she sees a specialist in December (yup that long of a wait) he can treat her enough to get her crusie ready by June.

IF we decide she can't make the trip is there any chance of a 100% refund? I think Disney keeps your deposit and the rest goes to a future cruise credit? Really don't want to postpone, worst case is she stays home, then I know Disney will still charge for at least 2 adults in each room but for me it would seem the price would stay the same.

I'm going to go through a TA because of all uncertainty but before I get a TA involved I'm just trying to find a general idea of my options if you have gone through something similar.

Only Concierge is non-refundable ever. (And *GT but this far out that's not an issue.)

All other cabin types are fully refundable up to the date of Final Payment Due.

As mentioned above, as long as you don't book Concierge (or a restricted fare), you can get a full refund up until your final payment date, which is typically 90-120 days before the cruise.

If you do book a Concierge room, the deposit will be non-refundable but can be transferred to another cruise up until the final payment date. (The deposit amount will stay non-refundable even if the stateroom on the new cruise is not Concierge.)

I hope your wife is able to take the cruise. If you do decide to go without her, note that you could save money by moving one of your grandchildren into your room "on paper" since you will pay for 2 people in your room anyhow. It doesn't matter where everyone actually sleeps, but there are a few complications.  If the two rooms have different muster stations, the child in your room would need to go to your muster station, and you would need to sign a paper allowing your daughter to take her child off the ship.

Thank you so much for the replies. Very helpful!

While it can be disheartening to cancel a Disney Cruise reservation, knowing the proper steps to take and understanding the policies involved will help you make informed decisions and manage any potential financial implications.

So let’s dive in and discover how to cancel a Disney Cruise reservation with confidence and ease.

Reasons for Canceling a Disney Cruise Reservation

There are various reasons why someone might need to cancel a Disney Cruise reservation. Life is unpredictable, and circumstances can change unexpectedly. Here are some common reasons why individuals may find themselves cancelling their Disney Cruise reservation:

  • Unexpected Events: Life is full of surprises, and sometimes emergencies or unforeseen situations arise. This could include illness, a sudden change in personal circumstances, or family emergencies that require immediate attention. When faced with such events, cancelling a Disney Cruise reservation becomes a necessary step.
  • Scheduling Conflicts: Sometimes, conflicts in schedules or conflicting priorities can make it impossible to go on a planned Disney Cruise. Work obligations, important family events, or other commitments may arise, making it necessary to cancel your reservation to attend to those obligations.
  • Financial Considerations: Financial constraints can also play a role in cancelling a Disney Cruise reservation. Unexpected expenses, changes in financial situations, or the need to reallocate funds for more urgent matters may require individuals to reevaluate their cruise plans and cancel their reservation.
  • Weather or Cruise Disruptions: Occasionally, inclement weather or disruptions in cruise itineraries can cause changes in plans. If the cruise line alters the route, changes the departure date, or cancels the cruise altogether due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, passengers may choose to cancel their reservation as a result.
  • Personal Preferences: Despite the magical experiences that Disney Cruises offer, personal preferences can change over time. Maybe you no longer desire a cruise vacation or have decided to pursue an alternative travel experience. In such cases, cancelling the reservation allows you to explore other options that align more with your current preferences.

It’s important to remember that the decision to cancel a Disney Cruise reservation is highly personal and unique to each individual’s circumstances. Whatever the reason, it’s essential to understand the cancellation policy and follow the necessary steps to ensure a smooth cancellation process.

Understanding the Cancellation Policy

Before you proceed with cancelling your Disney Cruise reservation, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of the cancellation policy. The cancellation policy outlines the terms and conditions regarding cancellations, including any fees, refund eligibility, and the timeframe within which you can cancel without penalties.

Disney Cruise Line has a specific cancellation policy in place that you should familiarize yourself with. This policy may vary depending on the type of cruise package, length of the cruise, and other factors. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Cancellation Period: The cancellation policy typically specifies the timeframe within which you can cancel your reservation without incurring any penalties. This period may be different for different cruise packages or cabin types.
  • Cancellation Fees: The cancellation policy also outlines the fees or penalties that may apply if you cancel your reservation outside of the designated cancellation period. These fees may vary based on factors such as the proximity to the departure date and the type of reservation.
  • Refund Eligibility: Understanding the refund policy is essential. The cancellation policy will specify whether you are eligible for a full refund, partial refund, or no refund at all based on the timing of your cancellation relative to the departure date.
  • Insurance Coverage: If you purchased travel insurance for your Disney Cruise reservation, make sure to review the coverage provided. Depending on the terms of the insurance policy, it may offer protection in the event of cancellations due to specific reasons, such as illness or unforeseen emergencies.
  • Special Promotions or Discounts: If you booked your Disney Cruise reservation during a special promotion or with a discounted rate, the cancellation policy may have additional provisions specific to those offers. Be sure to review these details to understand if any promotional benefits will be impacted by the cancellation.

You can find the specific cancellation policy for your Disney Cruise reservation by referring to the terms and conditions provided at the time of booking. If you booked through a travel agent, they can also assist you in understanding the policy and answer any questions you may have.

By understanding the cancellation policy, you can make informed decisions regarding your Disney Cruise reservation and be prepared for any potential fees or refund considerations.

  • Locate the Disney Cruise Line customer service phone number. This can typically be found on their website or in the confirmation email you received when you made the reservation.

They can provide you with specific information based on your reservation details and guide you through the cancellation process smoothly.

Remember to take note of the representative’s name and the date and time of the call, as well as any important information discussed during the conversation. This documentation can be useful in case of any future discrepancies or disputes.

By following these steps, you can cancel your Disney Cruise reservation over the phone confidently and ensure that your cancellation request is accurately processed.

Refund and Credit Policy

When cancelling a Disney Cruise reservation, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the refund and credit policy to understand what options are available to you. The specific policy may vary based on factors such as the type of reservation, cancellation timing, and any applicable promotions or discounts. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Refund Eligibility: Depending on the timing of your cancellation, you may be eligible for a full refund, partial refund, or no refund at all. The cancellation policy will specify the cutoff dates and any associated fees or penalties for cancellations made within certain timeframes.
  • Future Cruise Credit: Instead of a refund, Disney Cruise Line may offer the option of receiving future cruise credits. These credits can be applied towards a future reservation. The credit amount may vary based on the cancellation timing and the specific terms outlined in the cancellation policy.
  • Promotional Benefits and Discounts: If you booked your Disney Cruise reservation during a special promotion or with a discounted rate, cancelling your reservation may impact any promotional benefits or discounts associated with the original booking. The cancellation policy will outline any adjustments or changes to these promotions in case of cancellation.
  • Travel Insurance: If you purchased travel insurance for your Disney Cruise reservation, review the coverage provided. Depending on the policy, you may be eligible for reimbursement or coverage for non-refundable expenses due to specific circumstances, such as illness or other covered events that prevent you from going on the cruise.

Keep in mind that the refund and credit policy may have exceptions or special considerations. It is crucial to carefully review the specific terms and conditions of your Disney Cruise reservation, as outlined in the cancellation policy. If you have any questions or concerns about the refund or credit options available to you, reach out to Disney Cruise Line customer service for further assistance.

Always retain any confirmation emails or documentation related to your refund or future cruise credit. This serves as proof of the transaction and can be helpful in case of any discrepancies or issues that may arise later.

By understanding the refund and credit policy, you can make informed decisions regarding your cancelled Disney Cruise reservation and explore the available options for any potential refunds or credits.

Special Considerations for Canceling

While cancelling a Disney Cruise reservation may seem straightforward, there are a few special considerations to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and hassle-free cancellation process:

  • Timing is Key: Be mindful of the cancellation period outlined in the policy. Cancelling within the designated time frame can help you avoid penalties or fees and potentially qualify for a full refund or future cruise credit.
  • Communicate with Your Travel Agent: If you booked your Disney Cruise reservation through a travel agent, it’s important to involve them in the cancellation process. They can provide guidance, answer questions, and assist you in navigating through the necessary steps.
  • Review Travel Insurance Coverage: If you purchased travel insurance, carefully review the policy to understand what coverage is available for trip cancellations. Make sure to follow the procedures outlined by your insurance provider to file any necessary claims.
  • Consider rescheduling instead of canceling: If your cancellation is due to scheduling conflicts or unforeseen circumstances, it may be worth exploring the option of rescheduling your Disney Cruise rather than canceling altogether. Disney Cruise Line offers flexibility in changing your sail dates, allowing you to still experience the magic of a Disney Cruise at a later time.
  • Check for Non-Refundable Fees or Services: Some elements of your Disney Cruise reservation, such as pre-booked shore excursions or onboard activities, may have separate cancellation policies or non-refundable fees. Ensure that you are aware of any additional fees that may apply when cancelling these services.
  • Group Bookings or Multiple Cabins: If you booked multiple cabins or have a reservation as part of a group, cancelling may have different implications. It’s important to consult the cancellation policy and communicate with the relevant parties involved to understand the specific terms and any potential impact on the group booking.

By taking these special considerations into account, you can make informed decisions and navigate the cancellation process more effectively. Remember to review the cancellation policy, communicate openly with Disney Cruise Line or your travel agent, and explore alternative options before finalizing the cancellation.

While cancelling a Disney Cruise reservation may be disappointing, ensuring you understand the process and have considered all the relevant factors will help you navigate through this process with confidence and minimize any potential complications.

Families cancel cruises as Disney holds out on vax requirements

Disney Cruise Line passengers are cancelling maiden voyages, as the family-focussed line continues to enforce vaccination requirements.

Since the Eastern seaboard protocols of mandated cruise ship vaccinations were repealed last month, the majority of cruise lines have removed their Covid protocols. Disney Cruises, however, remains a notable exception.

Disney’s Customer Service states the vaccination rules will be in place at least until November 16, before being reassessed. Disney Wonder arrives in Australia in October.

The delay has meant confused families have been cancelling their cruises at the last minute as they remain unsure over who will and won’t be allowed on the ship.

Cruiser Jessica Yap said she cancelled on the day her full payment was due.

“I just cancelled my Disney Cruise. Absolutely gutted about it!” she posted.

“I know Disney will eventually update their policies, but it wasn’t something I could afford to wait around and see. Fingers crossed they get their act together.

“They won’t extend my paid-in-full date due to the uncertainty of the situation and not knowing how long it may take for policies to be updated. I was told I could pay in full, but with no guarantee of a full refund if vaccination requirements remain.”

Another cruiser called Cruise Passenger and said their group was forced to cancel one of their cabins due to vaccination rules, despite not being warned when booking their cruise.

Full vaccination still required

Disney Cruise Line is still requiring full vaccination for all passengers 12 and over who wish to sail in the upcoming inaugural Australian season. The policy remains on Disney’s website and was confirmed to Cruise Passenger via a Disney Cruise Line customer service representative.

Given Disney is a family cruise line, it would have a significant number of unvaccinated teenage passengers older than 12 booked for a cruise onboard Disney Wonder . But they will be unable to cruise Disney in the season ahead.

At this week’s Cruise 360 cruise industry conference in Brisbane, one industry figure told Cruise Passenger that they spoke to a Disney representatives who said they were expecting confirmation of a policy update in the coming days.

But that is no comfort to families with unvaccinated passengers over 12 years who, under current rules, will not be permitted to board Disney Wonder .

Families begin cancelling Disney cruises

A kid on a Disney Cruise meets a character.

While Disney holds out on updating their policy, that delay has led to some guests cancelling their cruises. With final payments looming, some passengers have decided they can’t hold out any longer.

Posts regarding vaccination rules in Disney Facebook Groups are quickly garnering hundreds of comments, as cruisers remain confused. The Disney Cruise Australia season begins in October, just over a month away.

Cruise Passenger has also contacted leading travel agents, who are also unsure of how the rules will play out.

This doesn’t make sense. As of 30 August 2023 Disney will accept unvaccinated passengers from the USA but not Australia. They just missed out on my business as well. I did not continue with my booking departing in October

There is nothing ‘wrong’ with people who choose not to have their children vaccinated for COVID. My children are adults now, but if they were still children I would not have them vaccinated as I would consider that to be the ‘safer’ option. I don’t believe there has been enough time to truly determine the safety of the vaccine. I was mandated to have the vaccine to continue working as a registered nurse and I now believe I should have refused, as did other registered nurses. We had a friend that had no known health issues and after receiving a COVID vaccine, she sadly passed away due to blood clots forming. After losing our friend I have refused to have any booster COVID vaccines. During a shift at work this year I asked a security officer why I hadn’t seen him, he explained that after receiving a COVID vaccination he lost his eyesight for 12 months. I talked about what he had told me with an Ophthalmologist and they confirmed they have been treating people post COVID vaccination with a condition called Optic Neuritis. There are many research articles online that you can access pertaining to these cases. These are by no means, the only medical conditions that have been caused by having a COVID vaccination but if you are interested you can easily research more on the internet. Lastly, regardless of people being fully vaccinated, they are still able to transmit the virus. Again, there are many research articles on the internet that confirm this. One of these articles, published by the medical journal, ‘The Lancet’ can be found here,

I think it’s time we should stop judging people for making a decision that they believe is keeping them and their families safe, whether that may be choosing to have a COVID vaccination or choosing not to.

what is wrong with you Diana If you bothered to look into it you would find you are safer with unvaccinated people around you. Analyse the science, read the data. Hope Disney goes broke

What is wrong with those who are cancelling? It is much safer for me and my family to be surrounded by fully vaccinated people.

Disney is a woke basket case. Their diversion from what Walt Disney had built, is appalling. They are trying to impose their disgusting values on young children. I would never travel with them. I will not watch or buy, any of their woke garbage. It is no longer suitable for young children. Like many other business that have chosen this path, they have been losing billions and will continue to do so! And they deserve it!
