Daydream Island The jewel of the Whitsunday Islands.

Daydream Island is one of seven islands of the Molle Group of islands which is part of the Whitsunday Islands Group, nestled in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Just one kilometre long and half a kilometre wide, Daydream Island is one of a few inhabited islands in the Whitsundays.

Daydream Island is the closest of the Whitsunday Islands to Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour, lying just five kilometres from the mainland making it popular with day visitors.

It is the perfect place from which to explore the beautiful Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef and the island resort is ideal for both fun-seeking families and romance-seeking couples. The sparkling bays, secluded beaches and stunning rainforest are just some of the island’s natural beauty that visitors to Daydream Island can expect to experience.

Daydream Island has three fabulous beaches, with Sunlovers Beach fringed by live coral outcrops containing over 40 species of marine fish and 50 coral varieties, the perfect location for hours of snorkelling and underwater exploration.

The highest point and centre of the island is a small, dense jungle of lush tropical vegetation inhabited by parrots and tiny sunbirds. Daydream is a peaceful and relaxing tropical tranquility surrounded by nature, in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations .

Can you do a day trip to daydream island?

You can visit Daydream Island for a day trip . Visitors are able to travel to the Daydream via ferry departing Port of Airlie at 8.45am onwards. The last ferry departing Daydream Island leaves at 9pm back to Port of Airlie.

Daydream Island Resort and the Living Reef is ideally located in the heart of Queensland’s Whitsundays Islands, it’s iconic Whitehaven Beach , and the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.

Can you swim in Daydream Island?

While the beaches are not patrolled, there are plenty of places to swim on Daydream Island, like the island beaches and the resort pools – Rumbah Pool, Splashes Pool, Inkstone Pool and Tonic Swim Up Bar.

Is there sand on Daydream Island?

Yes, the water is the perfect turquoise colour, the small beach has sand that is super white. Daydream Island feels like paradise!

Daydream Island Living Reef

The Living Reef at Daydream Island Resort is a free form coral lagoon that wraps 200 metres around the central building on Daydream Island. The Living Reef is an underwater observatory and is home to over 100 species of marine life including fish, small sharks, rays and other reef dwelling creatures, coral and a variety of invertebrates such as starfish, sea cucumbers and crabs.

The Living Reef is 15 metres wide and holding over 1.5 million litres of fresh, filtered sea water. This man made reef system offers a range of ways you can get up close to our resident marine animals.

The Underwater Observatory takes you 4m under the surface and showcases a large 7 x 3m window where you can watch the marine life going about their day.

The Reef Education Centre has 8 living displays showcasing various habitats from mangroves to corals, a theater and an interactive touch pool.

Enter the Living Reef and take a splash with baby sting rays, followed by a talk and tour into the underwater observatory. This is both an educational and truly unforgettable experience.

Getting to Daydream Island

To get to Daydream Island (formerly known as West Molle Island) you can fly direct to nearby Hamilton Island Great Barrier Reef Airport from most Australian cities and transfer to Daydream Island by ferry. Or fly into Proserpine/Whitsunday Coast Airport, travel by coach through Airlie Beach to Shute Harbour , and then by ferry over to Daydream Island.

Can you take your car to Daydream Island?

No, you can’t drive your car on Daydream Island. You’ll need to drive to Airlie Beach and park your car near the port and jump on the ferry to Daydream Island.

How long does it take to walk Daydream Island?

Daydream Island great for going for a short scenic walk. The island is approximately 1km from north to south and is about a 10 to 15-minute stroll.

Daydream Island also has some short walking trails that will allow you to explore the island and tropical gardens. A steep, rocky path that links the southern and northern ends of the island, takes about 20 minutes to walk.

Your introductory scuba dive will go for around about 30 minutes and 7 -10 metres below the waters surface, all dependant on your use of air, but the experience will last a lifetime.

Hardy Reef boasts an abundance of rainbow reef fish, as well as the odd sightings of sea-turtles, and even migrating whales and dolphins in the cooler months.

You may have travelled across the globe, or the Great Barrier Reef might happen to be in your own Australian back yard, and if you’re a certified scuba diver, you’ll know of the stunning underwater world awaiting you here.

• Certain medical conditions and medications may preclude some people from scuba diving.
• Participation is subject to a medical questionnaire completed on board with the tour operator
• Minimum age for scuba diving is 12 years.
• Flying after scuba diving: a wait of 12 hours is recommended after one dive, 18 hour after 2 dives and at least 24 hours after multiple dives, before ascending to an altitude of 300 metres or greater.

Fun, sun and… oh, did we mention kids eat for free?

Ask any parent what their dream family holiday would look like and they’re likely to say somewhere with a great swimming pool, food options that cater for fussy eaters, and a kids’ club to keep the little ones busy, while allowing us some much-needed relaxation.

Well, Daydream Island Resort checks all these boxes and then some. When my 9-year-old son and I spent three days at Daydream Island Resort, we experienced the type of holiday that dreams are made of.

We boarded a direct flight from Sydney to Hamilton Island and from there we took a quick 30 minute ferry ride across to Daydream Island.

Check-in at was seamless and within minutes we were dropping our bags off in our room and taking in the stunning water views from our balcony. Then, it was time to explore the island…

What to expect at Daydream Island Resort

Located in the Whitsundays in Queensland , Daydream Island Resort is literally paradise for families . From the huge swimming pool, which my son would’ve happily splashed around in all day, to the picturesque coral beaches and rainforest walk, there is so much to see and do.

However, what makes Daydream Island Resort so special is the 200-meter man-made lagoon, called the ‘Living Reef’ that wraps around the main resort building. Featuring real-life reef conditions, the Living Reef flushes in 1.5 million litres of ocean water to sustain over 140 species of fish, including sharks and rays.

You can observe the marine life and coral reef through a large acrylic window, or you can do what my son and I did: join the resort’s marine biologists for a Feeding Tour and a Living Reef Guided Snorkel tour.

Feeding the stingrays and then swimming alongside them, as well as with tropical fish and reef sharks, created a core memory that I’m sure will stick with my son for life. After snorkeling, he excitedly declared that he wants to be a marine biologist when he grows up. And I’ll be thrilled if this holiday helps shape his future career path!

Standout dishes included the fish of the day – I enjoyed the barramundi served with grilled heirloom tomato caponata, salsa verde, preserved lemon, and caper frisée. From the kids’ menu, my son ordered the steak and chips multiple times during our stay. It was a sure-fire winner!
