Davao del Norte Sports Complex

The Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex ( DNSTC ) is a sports complex in Tagum , Davao del Norte , Philippines , and is the largest sports complex in the Davao region. It was built on the area of the former Davao Sports Complex, torn down by fire in 2003.

Complex was the main hub for 2015 Palarong Pambansa events, including the opening and closing ceremonies. Stadium is the home of Davao Aguilas F.C. since their founding in 2017.

A previous sports facility called the Davao Sports Complex stood in the lot where the new DNSTC was built; the old sports complex consisted of two wooden grandstands and a partially-covered gymnasium, with a gravel athletics track , a football field, and a gravel baseball court. The lot was then used as a motocross track.

In 2007, plans were being made to reconstruct the sports complex using better materials with an avant-garde design, with the aim of building the most modern sports facility throughout the Philippines. The initial design was drawn up and presented in 2008. The initial cost for the reconstruction project amounted to PHP 350 million. However, the financial crisis of 2007–2008 caused the prices for the project materials to exceed the budget. This prompted the provincial government to use the budget for other services. [1]

In 2011, Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo P. Del Rosario revived the project as part of the province's bid to host the 2015 Palarong Pambansa , but this time it followed a more conventional design. Project cost amounted to PHP 243 million. [1] Construction began on 11 November 2011 and was completed on the target date of 12 December 2012. [ citation needed ] [2]

The complex has several sporting facilities including a 3,000-capacity main grand stand, a rubberized eight-track athletics oval, an Aquatic Center featuring a ten-lane Olympic -size swimming pool (50 meters) with a warm up pool (12 meters), two lawn tennis courts, an air-conditioned multi-purpose Rodolfo P. Del Rosario Gymnasium that can be used for indoor games, two football fields, and a club house. [3] [4]

The complex also has a lighting system for night events, consisting of four light towers with high-intensity bulbs and additional LED lights on the main grandstand.

The main grandstand has several multi-purpose rooms that can be used for other indoor games or storage space. Offices for the Provincial Sports Office and a sub-office for the Provincial General Services are located in the main grandstand and Aquatic Center grandstand, respectively.

The clubhouse features a canteen operated by the provincial government employees', an open-air dining area, and an air-conditioned conference room.

The DavNor Pasalubong Shop and Tourism Village are located behind the RDR Gymnasium and Aquatic Center. A covered area with lights and sound fixtures is available for night events such as concerts. The area also has spaces where tenants can set up their stalls and sell their products.

The sports complex operates as a multi-use sports venue, capable of hosting regional, national sports events such as the Palarong Pambansa and the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Competition, and international events such as the Southeast Asian Games or the Asian Games . The Tourism Village is used for all tourism-related activities by the Provincial Government.

DavNor Sports Complex track oval reopens

October 11, 2022 by NewsLine Philippines

davao del norte tourism and sports complex

Time to get back into shape.

Athletes and fitness enthusiasts can use the running track oval of the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex (DNSTC) once again as it formally reopened Monday morning, October 10, 2022, after being closed to the public for more than two years.

Governor Edwin Jubahib led the inauguration of the P34.85-million newly-rehabilitated rubberized track and field oval, with materials imported from Switzerland.

The Provincial Sports and Youth Development Office (PSYDO) temporarily closed the track to the public when breaks and cracks appeared even before the start of the pandemic, posing risks to the athletes and joggers.

Plans for the renovation of the facility was put on hold during the crisis but the track remained closed even when the other facilities of the sports complex were already reopened to the public early on this year.

Jubahib pushed for the rehabilitation of the oval in pushing for the revival of the grassroots sports program of the province, while pursuing the province’s bid to again host big-ticket regional and national sports competitions.

He cited the advantage of a rubberized track, particularly in providing safe and convenient option for running.

“Ang advantage man gud kung rubberized dili bun-og ang imong tiil ug mas maayo ang imong pagdagan (A rubberized track prevents foot contusion and enhances running performance),” he said.

The governor reiterated the use of the track oval remains free to the public, “provided that we strictly follow the rules and regulations to protect our facility.”

The governor was joined by Vice Governor De Carlo Uy and Members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, provincial department heads led by Provincial Administrator Engr. Josie Jean Rabanoz, and Architect Nelson G. Yu of Young Builders.

Davao del Norte Track and Field Association President Beverly Villarino thanked the governor for pursuing the project, saying the province is again back on track in pursuing its “dream of producing athletes that can compete in national and even international arena.”

It can be recalled that DNSTC was the main hub for the  2015 Palarong Pambansa  events, including the opening and closing ceremonies, while it now accommodates the  Philippines Football League  outfit  Davao Aguilas F.C.  as its home field since their founding in 2017.

P243-M DavNor complex now nearing completion

davao del norte tourism and sports complex

THE P243 Million Davao del Norte Sports Complex is set for completion next month and primed to host major sports events beginning next year.

The facility sits on a 12-hectare property in Mankilam, Tagum City, some 55 kilometers from Davao City and features a main arena with a grandstand with a seating capacity of 5,000, an all-weather track oval, a football field, and collapsible bleachers. This main arena boasts of professional sports lighting system that allows for night games.

Gone are the fire-ravaged remains of the old sports complex and the provincial gymnasium which were gutted down 20 years ago.

In place is a sports facility that provincial officials describe as “just the right size and the right amenities.”

It also boasts of an Aquatic Center with a 10-lane Olympic-sized pool, practice pool, and multi-purpose building with dressing rooms.

Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario walked into the "80 percent complete" stadium on Monday and declared: “It’s ready for the big events.”

Weather conditions in the past two weeks set back the construction works at the track oval but the province is confident the venue will be ready to be inaugurated on December 12 in time for a “12-12-12” date with history.

The facility is set to host the Private Schools Athletic Association Regional Games in January.

Aside from the PRISAA event, Del Rosario is looking forward to hosting the Davao Regional Athletic Association meet and the Palarong Pambansa in 2015 as Mindanao takes its turn to host the annual school-based multi-sport meet.

Davao del Norte redesigns sports program, activities

  • Manuel Cayon
  • February 18, 2021

DAVAO City—Demonstration sports and more grassroots participation mark a redesigned sports program that Davao del Norte will be implementing to assure the province’s athletes of continued support amid the lockdown wrought by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Provincial Sports and Youth Development Office (PSYDO) of Davao del Norte tinkered with its sports activities and competitions to adopt to the limitations and protocols during the pandemic.

“It’s still possible to conduct trainings and competitions virtually—when competitions were hard to believe that they could be staged during pandemic held,” PSYDO Department Head, Giovanni Irong Gulanes said.  “The nature of the competitions had to change in order to adapt to the difficult times.”

For sepak takraw, basketball and taekwondo, Gulanes said athletes record on video their routines in ball control, freestyle dribbling and speed kicking and submit them online to judges.

“Now there is an incoming online dancesport, no partners, just individually,” he said. “This pandemic pushed us to be innovative.”

Gulanes said that the PSYDO intends to reach out to athletes who have no gadgets or internet.

“Our staff at PSYDO will go to these places and record the participants on video. Originally, the parents were tasked to take the videos. But it’s no longer that way, we want to have an inclusive sports program,” Gulanes said.

“This way, the provincial sports office would ensure more grassroots  participation,” he added.

Gulanes said the province also helped keep the athletes in shape during the lockdown with provincial sports association and technical officials serving as trainers and coaches.

The capital of Tagum City, meanwhile, opened a new residential care facility for children with special needs.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office recently inaugurated the Center for Children with Special Needs (CCSN) as one of the highlights of its 70th anniversary celebration.

The CCSN is the first and only DSWD-managed facility in Mindanao that will cater to children with special needs. It has a 60-bed capacity.

The city government of Tagum donated 4,000 square meters of land to the DSWD where the residential care facility now stands.

“We extend our utmost appreciation to the local government for their support to this project,” Assistant Regional Director for Operations Merlinda Paragamac said.

GOVERNOR OF THE YEAR HON. EDWIN I. JUBAHIB Governor, Davao Del Norte

For his vision in providing his constituents with a kind of governance they can be proud of. One of the major visions he has is to future-proof Davao del Norte through a strengthened E-Governance program, and the award-winning COVID-19 Contact Tracing System, among others.

Despite his plans for the future of his province, he has not forgotten to address the present problems. He has launched the DavNor KAAGAPAY Program which aims to establish backyard and communal gardens as agricultural products-yielding lots. The program has since expanded into environmental sustainability and livelihood, his government’s response to the food and livelihood shortage problem brought about by the COVID-19 crisis.

DavNor sports complex “SEA Games” ready

DAVAO CITY – Following the success of Palarong Pambansa 2015, organizers claimed that the Davao del Norte Sports Complex is ready to host a multi-sports tournament such as the Southeast Asian Games.

“We are ready because we are very organized and we really stood up on our statement (of having) the best ever Palarong Pambansa,” said Araceli Ayuste, president of Davao del Norte Tourism Council.

She added that they continue to promote Davao del Norte as the main hub for sports events after it was declared to have the best sports facilities.

“We have to sustain this project. Right now, we are already in the second reading in the Senate about putting up a sports academy,” Ayuste said.

The proposed sports academy will be located at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex in Tagum City.

Meanwhile, members of the local media were disappointed because the IDs given to them were not honored during the event.

“Local media were given IDs but we were not allowed to enter to the place where we were supposed to stay. We could not take good pictures of the Palarong Pambansa,” veteran photojournalist Seth Delos Reyes said.

Ayuste said that there was a committee in charge for the media.

The recent Palarong Pambansa 2015 was the 58th edition of the annual multi-sporting event for Filipino athletes.( davaotoday.com )

Davao del Norte gov vows to defy suspension

Palace metes 60-day suspension on Davao del Norte gov

Edwin Jubahib are seen outside the provincial capitol premises in Barangay Mankilam, Tagum City on Thursday as officials from the Department of Interior and Local Government implemented the 60-day preventive suspension order against him. | PHOTO: Ruel Dagsangan

TAGUM CITY — Davao del Norte Gov. Edwin Jubahib on Thursday vowed he would not step down despite a 60-day preventive suspension handed by the Office of the President, calling the order “unjustified” and “a power trip” by his political enemies.

Jubahib met with his supporters inside the provincial capitol complex in Barangay Mankilam here shortly before noon, hours after police-backed officials of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) served the administrative sanction against him.

READ: Palace suspends Davao del Norte gov for 60 days

The order was dated April 8, and signed for President Marcos by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin. It noted that there was “strong evidence of guilt against Jubahib” on the grave abuse of authority and oppression charges filed by Board Member Orly Amit in November 2022.

“Given the gravity of the offense charged, there is a great probability that his continuance in office could influence the witnesses or pose a threat to the safety and integrity of the records and other evidence,” the order read.

Abdullah Matalam, DILG regional director in Davao, told reporters on Thursday that Vice Gov. De Carlo Uy would serve as acting governor.

But Jubahib said: “We will not budge. They could not wait for the next election. They are eager to hold power and implement their personal interest.”

In a video statement released on his social media account early Thursday, the governor urged his supporters to converge at the provincial capitol to block the service of the suspension order.

In his talk to supporters hours later, Jubahib said Amit’s complaint came from his order in November 2022 recalling the provincial legislator’s capitol-issued service vehicle and detailing it to the provincial engineering office. He recalled that the vehicle was returned to Amit’s office that December.Local issues

The second-term governor had been locking horns with the board member from the Island Garden City of Samal due to several local issues. Amit had slammed Jubahib in a privilege speech before the provincial board after the latter allegedly insinuated that the legislator was involved in corruption, which the former had denied.

Jubahib ran under Partido Reporma of former Speaker and now Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez and supported the failed presidential bid of former Vice President Leni Robredo. He has since switched to the ruling Partido Federal ng Pilipinas led by President Marcos. In recent months, Jubahib, a known protégé of Alvarez, has aligned himself with Vice President Sara Duterte and her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte.

In his speech, Jubahib insinuated that his rivals were being backed by “powerful top politicians.”The governor has vowed to continue holding his ground until the suspension order is lifted.

“We will remain doing this rally so our President Bongbong Marcos, Executive Secretary Bersamin and SAP (special assistant to the president) Anton Lagdameo will hear that [my suspension] was wrong,” he said.
