3 Day Boat Tour El Nido – Coron | What To Expect

At first I was a bit skeptical when Sabrina suggested the 3 day boat tour between Coron and El Nido. I have never spent more than one day on a boat. What if the boat is much too small for the many people or if I get seasick or there is just no relaxed atmosphere on board? Thank God Sabrina booked the tour and what can I say? It was one of the most beautiful things we have ever done while traveling.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

It’s the feeling of being on the sea all day long and the fact that no matter when and where you look over the railing you always see hundreds of green islands that make this trip so incomparable. But let’s start at the beginning:

We booked this boat tour from Coron to El Nido after a long research with the provider El Nido Paradise* . This company has many, very good reviews and also the price was very good compared to other similar companys.

After booking and completing all the formalities, we arrived at the port of Coron at the agreed time. At the port our passport was checked again, we paid a fee and waited until everyone was ready. Then the tour finally started. After we got acquainted with the super friendly crew, the other passengers and of course the spacious boat, it took a while to switch to relax mode.

Everything was different and very exciting. You chat with the other people, marvel at the passing Philippine islands and soon comes the first snorkeling spot of the day.

El Nido to Coron Expedition – The Days on Board

Actually all the days of the three-day boat trip are a completely individual mix of activities such as snorkeling, kayaking or beach visits, relaxing on board and delicious food. There are new activities offered almost every hour (sometimes even more frequently) in which you can participate or not. It is up to each person to decide. In one day you go to different snorkeling spots, lonely beaches, sandbanks or even beautiful islands.

The great thing is that under normal circumstances you would never get to these great places. Because the usual 1 day tours that you can do from El Nido or Coron never go that far out. This means that the beaches and islands that you can experience on a three-day boat tour, you can only see on such a multi-day boat tour.

3 Tages Bootstour von Coron nach El Nido

At the beginning of each day you will discuss the day’s destinations, so that you can prepare yourself for what is coming up today. But if you don’t feel like snorkeling or swimming, you can just stay on board and let the sun shine on your belly. That’s what I often did. While Sabrina discovered the underwater world while snorkeling, I stayed on the boat or spent the time with diving into the sea.

Or I flew around with my drone in the area and captured the incredibly beautiful Philippine island world photographically. Besides the incredibly beautiful nature, we really loved the relaxed atmosphere on board. Everything was really totally chilled, the crew was really sweet and accommodating and we felt like we were spending a relaxing day on a beautiful beach.

The only difference is that the beautiful beaches (and the impressive islands) are passing by like in a huge IMAX cinema.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

We just felt totally comfortable and could not believe what a beautiful landscape we were driving through. And in addition to that there is this incredibly delicious food with which the crew of El Nido Paradise* has spoiled us over the 3 days.

Food on Board

Besides the spectacular nature, we found the food to be another highlight of the 3 day boat trip from Coron to El Nido. We were treated to 3 really incredibly delicious meals per day. And the food was not only delicious, it was presented in a way that you would otherwise probably only expect to find in a Michelin-starred restaurant.

And the crew created this delicious meal in a kitchen on a boat! We were really completely positively surprised and have been looking forward to the next meal every time like little children.

Essen auf der 3 Tages Bootstour von Coron nach El Nido

The meals were prepared either directly on the boat or (as for breakfast or dinner) on a beach where we spent the night. We then sat with 14 people at a huge table, which was filled to the last centimeter with delicious things.

There was always an abundant selection of meat dishes such as the Filipino chicken adobo, pork, but often also freshly caught fish or even squid, which was caught by the crew during a snorkel stop. In addition, of course, there was always the famous Filipino Power (rice) and for dessert a huge fruit buffet. We were all always stuffed and have never eaten so well again on our trip to the Philippines.

Abendessen auf der 3 Tages Bootstour von Coron nach El Nido

For breakfast we had eggs, pancakes, coffee and of course fruits again. Between meals, there were also always small snacks on board, such as fried bananas or cookies or something else. Culinary-wise the boat tour was a real hit!

Overnight Stay during the Boat Tour from Coron to El Nido

We were a bit worried beforehand because of the overnight accommodations. However, these worries were completely wiped away during the trip. The accommodations during the boat tour are really fantastic. The first night we stayed on a beautiful beach in simple tents.

Sounds uncomfortable at first, but because of the thick mattresses and cozy pillows it was really very comfortable.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

The beach was located on a small strait where other boats have were passing every now and then. The wonderful thing about this beach was the location, because we could experience both a beautiful sunset and a great sunrise from here.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

Our second night was on an island that belonged to the Linapacan archipelago and there we had real bamboo huts right on the beach. This was really super romantic and also comfortable again, because we had mattresses, pillows and a mosquito net. From our hut we had a super cool view of the beach and the night sky, which was teeming with stars.

Shower and Toilet on the Islands

Of course, you can’t expect luxury or anything even close to comfort here. The toilets on the islands were just simple outhouses and the showers were separate cabins with a large rain barrel and a small bucket in it with which you can then pour the water over your body. Does not sound super tingly, but was totally sufficient for us during the trip.

Tips for Island Hopping from Coron to El Nido

For us, the island hopping tour was really the highlight of our entire trip to the Philippines. We felt super comfortable, saw incredibly great nature and experienced things we couldn’t have imagined before. But here are a few things we really didn’t know before, but would have loved to know. So here is a list of the most important tips to help you plan your multi-day tour between El Nido and Coron.

Which boat company do we recommend?

We really looked at many of the numerous providers of boat tours between El Nido and Coron in advance and searched for the one that suited us best. The price differences are sometimes considerable, although the offering is actually quite similar. We then decided for the company El Nido Paradise* . They really had the best reviews and also a good price.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

Also the communication in advance was very pleasant. We had to pay a deposit and also get an S-PaSS to be able to start the tour at all during the pandemic. El Nido Paradise also supported us in this. Also, the crew on board was really super accommodating and really made our stay on board an unforgettable experience. We can highly recommend this provider. You can get more information about the tour directly from the company:

How Much Does it Cost and are there any alternatives?

For us, the 3D/2N boat tour cost just under 300 Euro per person (16.900 Pesos) and was really worth every single Penny. There are also other providers who charge similar prices or sometimes up to 500 Euro per person.

Alternatively you can do the same route in 4 days (4D/3N* ) or even 5 days (5D/4N *). You will then see many more highlights and can collect even more experiences. But 3 days are the shortest duration in which you can do the route.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

If you really just want to cover the distance between Coron and El Nido as fast as possible and you don’t want to take the plane, you can also just take the ferry between Coron and El Nido *. This will take you to the other island in 4-7 hours. You will see the beautiful island world pass by, but you won’t have any great experiences on the way like on the 3 day boat trip.

What do I have to take with me?

Since you will be fully catered for on the boat tour between El Nido and Coron, you do not need to take any food or water with you. You should only bring a water bottle. By the way, plastic bottles are forbidden on the islands, as well as other disposable plastic. If you have your own snorkeling equipment, you should take it with you, although there is plenty on the boat.

Then we always recommend swimming shoes on any water adventures. These are incredibly practical if you don’t want to hurt yourself on the many corals or rocks. Other than that, you really don’t need to take anything with you that you wouldn’t have anyway.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

Hungry Dogs on the Islands

We want to pay special attention to the many many hungry dogs we encountered during the boat tour on the (sometimes uninhabited) islands. Often they were really super thin, as they probably rely on spendy tourists, which must have been absent in the years of the pandemic.

When we were eating on the islands these sweet dogs always came directly towards us and sweetly waited for us to share a bit of our food. These dogs looked to thin that we could not resist and did feed lots of rice and other stuff to the dogs.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

How Big is the Boat?

Our boat was designed for up to 25 people, but was only occupied by 14 people + crew. This means that we really had enough space. The boat was about 30 meters long and 6 meters wide. There was a lower deck where you could sit protected from the sun and also eat and an upper deck, which was protected with a sun awning.

On the left and right side of the boat there were areas where you could walk back and forth and also sit or lie down. You see the boat is really big enough that everyone finds his place and you do not step on each others feet.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

Is there Cell Phone Reception on the 3 Day Boat Tour?

We were also surprised, but almost all the time we had reasonably good cell phone reception during the boat tour from Coron to El Nido. But there are big differences between the 2 available providers in the Philippines. Sabrina got a sim card from Smart and always had consistently better reception than I did with my Globe sim card.

Most of the time, of course, the reception is only enough to send photos and maybe videos via Whatsapp. Netflix or Youtube tend not to work, but you also have other things to watch during the boat trip.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

Is there Electricity on the Boat?

Thank God there is electricity on the boat, but this is not the case with all companys (but with El Nido Paradise* it is). We had already stocked up on full powerbanks and fully charged all batteries beforehand. But at least with my drone, I would not have been able to fly on all 3 days of the boat tour.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

Can you get Seasick?

If you are very susceptible then probably yes. But during the entire boat trip, the Philippine Sea was extremely calm and often even completely flat. There was almost no swell and so the risk of getting seasick is very low. If something should happen, there is a medicine box on board with all the pills you might need.

Is the tour the right thing for me?

If you want to experience a real adventure and not only cover the distance between El Nido and Coron, then you are exactly right with such a multi-day tour. Of course you won’t have the comfort of a 3* hotel and the showers and toilets will take some time getting used to, but the experiences during the tour will be unique.

3 Day Boat Trip Coron To El Nido I The Best Adventure In The Philippines

Do I Need a S-PaSS for the Boat Tour (during the pandemic)?

Currently (April 2022) you will the a S-PaSS. How difficult or complicated it is to apply for the S-PaSS unfortunately changes almost daily. But as for all other trips within the Philippines, you need to apply for an S-PaSS before starting the trip from El Nido to Coron (or the other way around). How to do that exactly we have described in a separate article Philippines 2022 | Entry, S-PaSS, COVID Rules

Does it make a difference in which direction I take the Boat Trip?

No not at all. It depends on your personal travel planning whether you go from El Nido to Coron or from Coron to El Nido. But of course you should also check when the tour operator offers the respective tours at all. Check the website of El Nido Paradise* or contact the provider by mail to find out the available times.

Big Dream Boatman

El Nido to Coron 4 Days 3 Nights

coron el nido boat tour

"Hidden beaches and coves, private lakes and emerald lagoons, fresh native cuisine and rustic and comfortable cabins, cottages and camping are Big Dream Boatman's signature experiences. Travel with them and you'll get to know the region's hidden gems" - Lonely Planet

1. About the Expedition

A maximum of 18 guests board the BDBM banka boat with the enthusiastic crew to embark on the adventurous journey from El Nido to Coron going across and through the uninhabited islands of Palawan.

This is an opportunity to fully experience island life, develop sincere friendships with locals and tourists, and explore at your own pace without feeling like a tourist. Consume healthy food and socialize with the staff and other visitors. Travel at your own speed... For those who prefer to be more active, there will be sports like skimboarding, basketball, and beach volleyball. If you prefer to relax instead, you can read a book or go for a walk.

You'll be stopping each evening at dusk on an island to observe the sunset, tell tales, and fall asleep under the stars.

There might be bonfires, boodle fights, and karaoke.

As we have further to travel, this trip is a little more demanding than Coron Island Life (Coron to Coron), making it perfect for those who are a little more adventurous or who may only have a short amount of time in Palawan and want to make the most of every day.

2. Where do we sleep?

Every evening at sunset, we arrive on a stunning island, where you can choose to camp out under the stars or stay in a native cottage dug into the sand. Every accommodation is offered and covered in the package.

3. Who is it for?

For those who have a spirit of adventure and an open mind, this trip is ideal. People who travel in search of authentic experiences and to connect with others who share their interests. Although there is no maximum age, we do ask that you be at least 14 years old and in good physical health.

4. Why travel with Big Dream Boatman?

Our trip has been shaped over time by the people it's meant to serve because we consider every guest's feedback and we carry out any changes that are requested.

We discovered that having too many people on the boat interferes with social dynamics, which is why we don't have too many people on it. We also try to include everything (including limited alcohol) in our fee and don't charge for anything during the trip.

Perhaps this explains why we maintain our top spot on Trip Advisor and remain the preferred expedition for the biggest names in travel, but there may also be another factor at play.

Although it's difficult to express, our name contains the key information. Have you ever been around individuals who are so passionate about what they do that you find it contagious?

That's probably what distinguishes us the most. As soon as you step foot on the boat, you join the family. As lovely as Palawan is—and trust us when we say it's gorgeous—we think the best memories are made when it's done with wonderful people.

5. When is good to go & itinerary?

We run expeditions from the middle of October to the end of July. January through April have the highest probability of ideal weather however we expect all expeditions to run from Oct - July.

The monsoon season prevents us from operating from August and September. There isn't a set schedule for these trips because, in our experience, it's best to allow for flexibility depending on weather and season. However, if you have specific inquiries about particular locations, feel free to get in touch with us.

We can assure you that we will probably stop by a few of the Coron Highlights, such as Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon, but we tend to avoid the others in Coron and El Nido. If you wish to see these, we recommend planning a day trip once you arrive at either location because we do focus on more of the remote, undiscovered areas.

6. Prices, Payment & Inclusions

This expedition typically costs $599 USD, however check the homepage or expedition pages to see if we are offering any discount.

A 40% online deposit is required , with the remaining 60% due at check-in.

Meals, beverages ( including alcoholic beverages), towels, snorkeling gear, and three nights of island-style lodging (cottages and camping) are all included in the price.

An expedition planning document is sent to you with additional information and suggestions for what to pack, etc.

7. Accommodations

The islands we visit lack amenities like hot running water or modern sewage systems because they are remote.

The cottages are made of bamboo and have a basic mattress, a mosquito net, and a fan. If the trip is full (only occurs during peak season), it is possible that you will share a room if you are a group of friends or a solo traveler.

Fresh water and a manual flush, both very straightforward but always clean and secure, are provided for the shower and toilet.

There is no luxurious bedding or air conditioning. There is very little electricity on the islands, all of the lodgings are constructed into the sand, meaning you wake up to the sounds of the sea.

People generally enjoy the rustic and straightforward aspect of the sleeping arrangements; however, it's important to set your expectations and determine whether you can "rough it" for a few days. We have been leading these expeditions for a few years and have welcomed all kinds of visitors, generally for those that are hesitant about the sleeping conditions it's usually not as 'rough' as you imagine, and you may well find you're tougher than you think ;).

8. The Boat

When we first started, we weren't particularly impressed with the boats available in Palawan, so as soon as we could, we set out to construct the most comfortable and secure banka boats the island had ever seen. And we did! The boat has everything we need to make the crossing, including a toilet, cushioned seating, nets on the side, and plenty of space on the upper and lower deck to relax and sunbathe. It's not necessary for adventure to be uncomfortable. Slide to see images!

Operated by Big Dream Boatman

Big Dream Boat Man was founded by Krish and Oli in late 2016. It was born out of a frustration of the 'day trip' culture, the lack of social and eco-responsibility by other operators and the 'let's get as many tourists on a boat as we can' approach. They decided to change it up, to create a socially responsible expeditions business that would show guests the true beauty of island life, out of stuffy hotels, away from the crowds, during a true adventure. All while at the same time supporting the local community via social projects As such, BDBM was born... and we've never looked back!

The Must-Do Island Hopping Boat Tour from El Nido to Coron, Philippines

The Must-Do Island Hopping Boat Tour from El Nido to Coron, Philippines

“Expect the unexpected”

Do you love nature? Can you fall asleep to the sound of the ocean? Are you a fan of mosquitos? Do you long for a bucket shower? Or mind staying salty for days? Do you love to swim in pristine waters? And lastly, can you let go of technology?

If any of these answers are a yes, then we suggest jumping on board the ultimate island hopping tour from El Nido to Coron (or vice versa)! The must-do tour in Palawan, Philippines.

What’s the best company for island hopping El Nido to Coron?

We recommend  Buhay Isla   for this amazing expedition. But what about  TAO expeditions  you may ask?

Tao is a highly reputable company that runs a similar trip. The difference is that Tao goes for 4N/5D (US$580) vs Buhay Isla which is 2N/3D (US$311) and subsequently, more expensive.

Tao may have one bad-ass boat and awesome campsites but for those on a budget and pressed for time, the price tag may come a little steep. 4 nights is a little bit too long in our opinion, which is why we recommend Buhay Isla. We’re not affiliated in any way, just so you know!

You may also want to consider the company Island Hopping in the Philippines (who we are affiliated with) which specializes only in custom private tours at an affordable rate . Simply fill in the form on that page and Sailor Sam will find the perfect solution for you!

No time? Island Hopping Tours Day Trips in El Nido

For those with less time and still want to go island hopping, we recommend the day trips in El Nido, more commonly known as Tour A , Tour B , Tour C , Tour D. They run from 9am to 4pm and include lunch and water.

Click on any of the links below for availability and to book.

  • Island Hopping A (Lagoons) : Small Lagoon, Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, 7 Commando Beach and Shimizu Island. $23
  • Island Hopping B (Caves) : Snake Island, Pinagbuyutan Island, Cudugnon Cave, Entalula Island and Cathedral Cave. $23
  • Island Hopping C (Beaches) : Helicopter Island, Matinloc Shrine, Secret Beach, Star Beach & Hidden Beach. $23
  • Island Hopping D (Cadlao Islands) : Pasandigan Beach, Nat Nat Beach, Bucal Beach, Cadlao Lagoon and Paradise Beach. $23 (Currently not available online)

Most people go on Tour A for the big and small lagoons, but they are all incredible. Tour C offers amazing snorkeling and hidden beaches. We personally did a combined tour of A and B.

If you want a custom private tour with fewer people, get a custom quote here .

El Nido

Over 2N/3D we explored the islands on an  outrigger canoe  past the tip of Palawan to Culion and the Linapacan islands. We sat back and enjoyed the deserted tropical islands, swam through areas uninhabited in the clearest water in the world, relaxed on sandbars and in hammocks, snorkelled through colourful reefs filled with all sorts of fish and enjoyed the BEST local food we’ve had in the Philippines.

Here’s our experience:

Buay Isla

Goodbye Civilisation

Our bags were packed, the sun was shining, the boat was ready and we’d just been introduced to the cutest little puppy in the world. Things were off to a great start!

Its also interesting to note that in the Philippines, dogs love to be on boats. On every island tour, no matter the company, there was a dog. We made quite a cute family, if only we could take him home!

Puppy Love

It didn’t take long before Jacob and I realised we were the minority of the group. 13 passengers and 9 of them were Dutch! Thankfully, we find the Dutch people some of the friendliest in the world. We boarded our boat, had our briefing and we were off to begin our expedition through the Bacuit Archipelago . One of the most incredible sights in Asia. Goodbye civilisation!

El Nido

Living the Island life

Eat, swim, snorkel, sleep, repeat. There’s not a lot of stimulation that goes on when you are island hopping so be prepared to relax !

Swimming! Every new place we parked our boat, we were the first to jump in the water. It was just incredible being in that transparent water… until you had to share your space with tiny electrocuting jellyfish. During one of our stops, those little bastards were everywhere and being stung by them felt awful. The itch was only temporary but it was enough to pull the anchor and head elsewhere. Thankfully we’re surrounded by beautiful water so we didn’t have to go far!

Snorkelling! We snorkelled so much on this trip that each stop blurred into one. At every stop there were endless schools of fish swimming, jumping tuna and whale sharks (just joking, we wish!). Over the course of 3 days, we saw loads of Nemos, puffer fish, lionfish, barracuda, baby stingrays and plenty of fish I couldn’t give a name too.

Buhay Isla

It was only a short time until we reached a new “swim stop” and there was yet again, that moment of wow. The weather, apart from a small amount of rain one evening, was perfect. The skies were sunny and the water was clear and calm. Not a lot of words can really describe the places we visited and besides, I think I’ve used them all up so instead, here’s a few pics to give you an idea what our days looked like.

Buhay isla

The only time we stopped swimming was to stock up on snacks and beer at the local village. Jacob took the opportunity immediately to start up a game of basketball with some of the locals. Filipinos are so passionate about their national sport and they’re so quick on their feet. Lucky he had some practice during our volunteer week in Tigman Village . God knows how they play with no shoes on!

Buhay Isla

Island Hopping Highlights

The whole trip was a highlight but there were definitely some moments that took our breath away more than others.

Ditaytayan Island Sand Bar

What could possibly be cooler than an afternoon on a sandbar? An afternoon on a sandbar with a drone!

Ditaytayan Island had  the most incredible scenery and definitely our favourite stop of the 3 days. As the boat pulled up to the shore it felt like we had just arrived at an untouched heavenly paradise. To be honest, it didn’t even feel real. We soaked up the sun, played around with our drone, took postcard-worthy photographs and felt at an all-time high.

Buhay Isla

We’re so glad we can finally share with you more than just pictures!

Buhay Isla

Barracuda Lake (Luluyuan)

Our second favourite was the Barracuda Lake. Just when we think we’ve swum in water clearer than air, we get to the Barracuda Lake in Coron. This lake felt completely see-through, as though we were floating on air! Barracuda Lake is well known because of its dramatic thermoclines where saltwater and freshwater coexist in the same space. The first few layers of water are normal freshwater (around 28° Celcius) but once you dive deeper, the water becomes saline and the temperature rises to a steamy hot 39° Celcius.

You could feel the difference the moment you jumped in (mainly because you had to work a little harder to stay afloat!). Michael, our tour leader, helped capture these entertaining and ever so peaceful moments under water!

Barracude Lake

We had no idea that our 3 days would be more than just island hopping but also a gastronomical tour too. It’s astonishing what can be cooked up in such a small kitchen on board a boat. No meal was ever repeated (apart from rice!) and the quality of the food really was the best local food we had in the Philippines. Somehow, in the midst of a tiny kitchen the size of a bathroom and one little BBQ, they cook up these incredible, mouthwatering, flavorful meals.

Lunch on the boat

For breakfast, our tummies were fed fluffy banana pancakes, omelettes, eggs, toast, fruit, sausages, tea & coffee. During lunch, either on the boat or the beach, we were filled to the brim with grilled fish, pork adobo (local dish), vegetables, chicken, shrimp, curries, mussels, fresh fruits and yes, of course, rice.

Beach Lunch Buhay Isla

By early evening we had reached the campsites. Everything was loaded off the boat and transported by kayaks into the kitchen on the campsite. We relaxed, read and waited for the table to be filled for dinner with yet again, delicious food.

Buhay Isla

The Accommodation

Lowering your expectations is one of the best things you could possibly to do yourself whilst travelling. By doing so, we were rather surprised at our accommodation. Sure, the camp was basic. As basic as you can get really, but we had a mattress with a clean sheet, a mosquito net, a bucket shower with cold refreshing water to wash our salty skin, first-class views of the ocean and the peaceful serenity of a secluded island. What more do you need?

In past trips, tents have been used for sleeping but due to recent strict government laws they have removed the camping and they’ve upgraded everyone to these bamboo huts.

Bamboo Huts

The only downside was little huts turned into a wood-fired oven at night and we shamefully have to admit, we didn’t think it was possible to sweat so much trying to sleep. Thankfully some rain in the evenings brought some sweet relief and kept those pesky mosquitoes away. When it wasn’t raining, the rest of our downtime was spent lazing about in the hammocks.

Buhay Isla

  • Cost – 15,500 PHP/person ($311 USD).
  • The cost includes 3 awesome meals a day, light snacks, water, soft drink, accommodation in tents or bamboo huts, mosquito nets, guides, the use of kayaks, snorkel, masks and transportation to and from the town.
  • The best time to go is between December and March when the skies are clear and dry.
  • The rainy season starts in June so if I was you, I’d think twice about going during this time unless you’re really adventurous.

Buhay Isla

  • Invest in a dry bag to keep your valuables safe and dry. Grab them for cheap in either El Nido or Coron before you leave.
  • Pack yourself a separate “day” bag for the 3 days. Your big luggage goes under the boat, wrapped in plastic and it’s a pain in the backside to get it out every time you need something. You spend 3 days in a swimming costume and sleep in something (or nothing?!) so don’t over pack, just bring the essentials.
  • Bring plenty of sun cream, bug spray, hand sanitizer, a hat and a water bottle (water is provided).
  • A headlamp/torch is helpful for the campsites in the evenings as there is no electricity.
  • Invest in water shoes for cliff jumping as the rocks are really sharp.
  • Bring spare batteries for your camera. There is nowhere to charge throughout the trip.
  • Rum & soft drinks are provided. If you want a beer, or two,  bring it from the town and they will keep it cool for you.
  • Lower your expectations and bring a smile! No one likes a party pooper.

Buhay Isla

Is this tour for everyone?

No. Absolutely not. You have to open your mind, let go of your worries and embrace the island life. If you’re going to complain about the sleeping arrangements, some rain or a mosquito bite, please, don’t waste your money or the poor tour leaders sanity.

Buhay Isla

For us, t his trip was a real highlight during our month in the Philippines. It is no doubt a great way to discover the beauty of the Palawan Islands, embrace the authentic Filipino culture, and enjoy some of the best home-cooked Filipino food with the ever so smiley locals and cute as puppies!

A special shout out to Michael, our tour leader, photographer, professional dancer and comedian. He made this trip that much more enjoyable with his incredible energy. We’ll miss you!

You can send them an email. Their contact information is on their website.

We have sent email and messages. No response. Very sad because we loved your write-up. We want to do the trip 3-5 Feb but will have to make another plan.

Such a shame they haven’t responded to you 🙁

Did you ever manage to contact them? I cannot seem to get a response from them sob !

Such a shame they aren’t responding to you! I’ll see if I can get a hold of them.

Great article and amazing pictures!

Just a quick question, do you remember the names of the places where you set off from and where you ended up? We’re trying to work out what hotels are nearby to book the night before we depart on this trip (3D 2N) and where we will end up on the morning/ day we arrive.

We stayed at Bulskamp Inn in El Nido and can totally recommend! It’s just a 10-minute walk to the office in El Nido. As for Coron, we stayed in a terrible hotel that we wouldn’t recommend. It doesn’t matter where you stay, you’ll have to get a tuk-tuk to your hotel anyway as there aren’t too many around the port.

Here are a few things we did whilst in El Nido too if you’re interested:

Emilia

Your trip looks amazing!

Just a quick question – does the 3d2n tour with Buhay Isla include attractions/sites from the typical tours A & C? We are definitely keen in going with Buhay isla after reading your blog, but we are not sure if we still need to allocate time for the island tours within El Nido. We wouldn’t want to visit say the Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon twice.

Alicia

Hi Emily- i’m headed to the philippines in March and i’ll be spending a few night in Coron before taking a Tao 5D/4N boat tour down to El Nido. I was wondering how many days you’d recommend spending in El Nido itself (and then Port Barton and Puerto Princesa)? looking forward to hearing your thoughts 🙂 thanks!

Hey Alicia!

I would spend at least 3 days in El Nido, we loved the island tours as well as all the great places to grab a bite to eat and relax! We have 2 separate posts that you can check out on El Nido. I’ll share it with you below:

https://justglobetrotting.com/where-to-eat-in-el-nido-philippines/

As for Port Barton and Puerto Princesa, we only spent 2 days in Port Barton. It’s very relaxed, it just depends how much time you have. Puerto Princesa is really just a city and the main attraction is the underground river which unfortunately we didn’t get too due to safety reasons!

Hope this helps! Enjoy!!

Serena Joy

wow, Coron has so many cool places to explore, you have really amplified my wanderlust with this post! I am planning a trip for the Philippines next year and I’m so excited about Kayangan Lake and wreck diving, especially the Tangat wreck ( https://dive.site/explore/site/tangat-wreck-46Kg ) Your fabulous photos are making me even more eager to go there. 2019, just come already!!!!

Thanks for your tips. Just trying to work out which is a better option between the multiday El Nido to Coron (either 4 day/ 3 night or 3 day/2night)…or….. a couple of days in El Nido followed by a fast ferry to Coron and the 3 day/3night Coron multiday boat trip. I do get sea sick so wondering if the 2nd idea is a safer option however would rather see the best sights. Any info helpful – aiming to travel December 2023 but looking into private trips as there are 6 of us so getting in early.

Hey Kris, if you have the time I would suggest spending a couple of days in El Nido doing different island hopping tours around that region and then jumping on the multi-day trip from El nido to coron because you’ll get to see many islands that aren’t included in the day trips from el nido and the seas aren’t rough so you shouldn’t have any issues with sea sickness.

When arriving in coron I recommend this tour – https://www.jonnymelon.com/coron-island-hopping-palawan/

I hope this helps and enjoy your trip!

Hello! My partner and I have booked to travel to Philippines in December this year and your blog has helped us a lot!! Do you know if the fast ferries are currently running from El Nido to Coron in first week of January 2023? (We’re hoping to travel El Nido to Coron on Mon Jan 2nd). ..We can’t seem to find any info online and no option to book online either. Many thanks!! Kind regards, Mia.

Hi Mia, glad you are finding my guides helpful! It’s strange that you are not able to book online. Have you tried the 12Go Asia booking links in this post? If these don’t work your best bet is to visit tourist offices in El Nido in person and get your ferry tickets that way. Hope this helps and enjoy your trip!

Hi mate your stuff is awesome.

Guides have really helped us on our first trip around The Philippines!

Awesome work 😊

Hi Elliot, thanks so much, glad you’ve found my Philippines guides useful for your trip! Have the best time 🙂

Hey Jonny –

Would you know if we can just buy our ferry tickets from Coron to El Nido in the Coron Port? Looks like the ferry operatirs are not keen to online booking 🙁

Hey! Yes I believe that is an option!

Ultimate Coron Island Hopping Tours Guide

By: Author MC Miller

Posted on Last updated: October 23, 2022

Categories Philippines , Travel Blog Post

Wondering which are the best Coron Island Hopping Tours to spend your money on? We know the feeling!

Having tried and tested the tours we can help you pick the right tour for you.

After experiencing all there was to offer in  El Nido , we moved on to Coron (only a short boat ride away).

Like El Nido, Coron is an area where boat tours whisk you to jaw-dropping lagoons, reefs and white sand beaches.

Which Coron Tour should I take? 4 Coron Tours which Rocked!

We did the 4 main tours in Coron with JY Travel & Tours . They were all absolutely amazing!

Know which tour you’re interested in? Jump right to it here:

  • Ultimate Tour
  • Coron Escapade
  • Calauit Safari

Or keep reading to see what each tour has to offer to help you decide what is the best for you.

The Ultimate Tour – For those who only want 1 Tour

The Ultimate Tour is exactly as the name suggests – it showcases the best & most iconic areas Coron has to offer.

If we had time for only one tour in Coron, this would be it. The stunning lagoons and amazing landscapes are unique to Coron and something you do not see everyday.

The Ultimate Tour costs 1200 PHP per person ($22 USD).

The tour includes: hotel transfers, an experienced guide & lunch. It does not include the use of kayaks (1000 PHP per kayak).

Tips for the Ultimate Tour:

  • Unlike the El Nido tours, hiring/buying reef shoes is not really a necessity. We did not hire the reef shoes and were perfectly fine;
  • Bringing or hiring a snorkel is worthwhile as part of the tour involves viewing of an underwater ship wreck;
  • Hiring a kayak is advantageous but not essential. You can also enjoy the Twin Lakes by swimming.

Kayangan Lake

The first destination of the day is Kayangan Lake. This is perhaps the attraction we were most excited to see in Coron due to the perfect turquoise water.

To reach this attraction, it involves a 367 step climb.

Luckily half way up, you will find an absolutely stunning view of Coron.

As this is one of the most iconic views of Coron, there was quite a line up to get this shot. Well worthwhile for a beautiful memory though!

And yes, the hike is completely worth every agonising step up as at the bottom you are rewarded with some of the clearest water in Asia with absolutely stunning natural rock formations.

The water is in fact so clear that you can see garfish swimming around you in the lake.

You are not allowed to swim in Kayangan Lake without a life jacket so make sure you bring one with you from the boat!

Barracuda Lake

Our next stop was Barracuda Lake. This was an unexpected stop and a “bonus stop” of our tour.

We thoroughly enjoyed Barracuda Lake and would recommend trying to book a tour which includes it.

If anyone is also interested in the best place to free dive in Coron – this is the place to do it! The underwater rock formations at Barracuda Lake are absolutely unreal.

We did not free dive but we had an opportunity to snorkel at Barracuda Lake and were very happy with the opportunity to be able to swim & snorkel in one of Coron’s most iconic locations.

We could also see the beautiful underwater rock formations just by snorkeling as the water is SO clear in Barracuda Lake. The visibility is unparalleled anywhere else we visited in Palawan.

Following Barracuda Lake is one spot we were eagerly awaiting. It’s one of the most iconic spots of Coron – the Twin Lake.

Twin Lake is known for the beautiful colour of water & stunning rock formations.

Here you have the opportunity to use rented kayaks. It is advisable but not absolutely necessary to kayak at Twin Lake.

After a fun time swimming & kayaking in the lake, we enjoyed a delicious lunch aboard the boat. This consisted of grilled fish, rice, vegetables, chicken & fruit.

Japanese Ship Wreck

The next stop is a Japanese ship wreck. It was very cool seeing a Japanese ship wreck from WW2 submerged underwater.

As stated above, it is advisable to hire or buy snorkel gear for this tour as it is fascinating to see the ship wreck.

The final stop of the day was CYC beach.

You can swim or use your kayak to access the beach.

Interestingly, we met a French tourist camping overnight on CYC beach. He had actually come on a day trip and asked if he could be collected the next day.

An option for anyone who wants to get back to nature for a night. Ask your tour if this is possible in advance. The tourist brought all his own supplies.

As we got back on the boat, we were treated to “Turon” a Filipino specialty which is banana wrapped in spring roll paper and fried.

Turon was one of the extra perks on our tour with JY Travel and Tours and one of the many reasons why we love them!

Coron Escapade Tour

The next tour we took of Coron was the Escapade Tour . We choose this tour as we wanted to see some spots further away from Coron where fewer tours (and tourists) go.

We recommend this tour for those looking for beautiful beaches further away from Coron.

There are less stops included in this tour as the first stop is 1.5 hours boat ride from Coron.

Tips for the Escapade Tour:

  • Hiring/buying reef shoes is not really a necessity. We did not hire the reef shoes and were perfectly fine;
  • Bringing or hiring a snorkel is worthwhile as the snorkeling on this tour is amazing;
  • Hiring a kayak on this tour is not necessary.

Malcapuya Island

The first stop was Malcapuya Island. This Island is absolutely beautiful – white sand beaches & crystal clear water.

Malcapuya Island Coron

What we also loved about this beach was that there are plenty of tables & chairs to sit on at the beach to keep shaded in the hot weather in the Philippines.

This island is also great for off shore snorkeling so if you have brought or hired a snorkel, this is a great opportunity to see some beautiful reef life.

Banana Island

After enjoying snorkeling and swimming at Malcapuya Island, it was time to stop for lunch at Banana Island.

The JY crew prepared the most delicious lunch at Banana Island consisting of grilled fish, chicken, rice & fresh fruit.

Banana Island is also a great place to snorkel. If you feel energised after lunch we highly recommend snorkeling at Banana Island as it was one of the best snorkeling spots we experienced in the Philippines.

Metres from shore Mike found a huge school of fish on a feeding frenzy – check out our Instagram story highlights for more about this!

Bulog Dos Island

The island we were most excited about visiting for the day was Bulog Dos Island , which features a stunning white sandbar which protrudes from the beach.

Alas, we are not very lucky with sandbars. Just like our visit to Snake Island, El Nido – we visited at high tide so the ocean covered most of the sandbar.

Even though the full sandbar was not visible Bulog Dos was still an absolutely beautiful island. The snorkeling on this island is also fabulous.

There is also a viewpoint on this Island where you can get some pretty cool Instagram shots.

Calauit Safari Tour

One of the reasons we were excited to visit Coron was to see African animals at the Calauit Safari.

We had seen this safari park on Instagram and were amazed that there was really African animals living in the Philippines. I mean, how cool is that?

Coron Safari

This tour starts even earlier than regular El Nido and Coron tours. The pickup time for the Coron Safari tour is 5am.

We actually didn’t realise this and managed to miss our tour one morning. Not recommended. All of the island tours in Coron start at around 8am. This is different – be prepared.

The first stop is for a local breakfast for those who want it. Breakfast is 100 pesos per person and includes 2 eggs, Filipino sausages & rice.

From here, it takes around 30 minutes to reach the entry to the safari park.

The safari park is a very interesting experience and definitely not be missed if you are in Coron.

A cool quirk of the park is that it’s located on an island reachable only by boat. It really felt like we were visiting Jurassic Park as our boat trundled up to this densely green island where rare animals awaited.

We found the boat ride over to the island to be pretty fun in itself.

When you first arrive, you get to feed the giraffes. It was so fun to be able to feed these animals. They were quite cheeky too so hold on to your branch or they will take it in one bite!

From there the rangers take you around the park to have a longer look at the animals and take photographs.

You can get fairly close to the giraffes and zebras in order to take a beautiful photo. The rangers don’t like you getting closer than 3-4 metres.

On the safari, the ranger also took us to see turtles, monkeys & a large snake.

It was a great experience and we would highly recommend it to anyone who loves animals.

After the safari, we had a quick pitstop at a local beach before heading back to the same restaurant as breakfast for lunch.

Black Island

After lunch the group split into two: those who wanted to see a waterfall & those who wanted to see Black Island.

We choose to skip the waterfall in favour of Black Island, an absolutely beautiful island off the north coast of Coron.

There is also an amazing cave on the island with a natural swimming hole. If you feel like an icey cold dip, you can even take a swim in the cave.

We arrived in Coron after a ferry ride from El Nido. The boat from El Nido arrrives at around 10am in the morning. This means it is too late to do a boat tour.

However, we didn’t need to waste any time as we were able to join the Coron Town Tour! This tour starts at 4pm in the afternoon.

Admittedly, we are not usually fans of town tours. We would rather DIY. However, as this tour requires an after dark transfer to the hot springs 30 minutes from town, we think it’s good value and more convenient than taking a tuk tuk.

We would highly recommend it if you have an extra afternoon spare while you are in Coron.

Lualhati Park

The first stop on the Coron Town Tour is Lualhati Park.

This was our least favourite spot of the tour but it was only a short stop for 10 minutes.

Basically, it is a nice river view walk/dock boat. Locals sell various souvenirs here and if you haggle, you can get a great price!

Mt Tapyas View Deck

The highlight of the Tour in our opinion was what came next – Tapyas View Deck.

The view and scenery at the View Deck is sublime.

We were not expecting this kind of countryside in the fisherman village of Coron and we were totally blown away.

In order to access the view deck, it is around a 20 minute stair climb to the top. We found it reasonably tiring (we were quite exhausted at the top).

Our guide told us that older people still manage to make it so it is definitely a doable hike!

From on side of the mountain a view deck with a beautiful vista of Coron town. On the other side is beautiful yellow rolling countryside like the one pictured below.

Mt Tapyas View Deck is the perfect place to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

One of the reasons for the late start of this tour is so you can sit down and enjoy the sun set over Coron.

Maquinit Hot spring

After a steep climb uphill, what is better than relaxing tired muscles under the stars?

We weren’t sure what to expect of Maquinit Hot Spring but we were pleasantly surprised.

The hot spring was so relaxing. It is extremely hot though and hard to stay in longer than 20-30 minutes at a time.

Luckily, there is a little cafe where you can buy cheap drinks and relax around the hot springs while you steam off.

Our group preferred to stay longer at the bigger attractions. There were a few attractions we missed in this tour: Town Plaza, Souvenir Shops, St Augustine Church & the cashew harvest.

What is great about JY Travel & Tours – they listen to the needs of the group and their preferences.

We loved that the tour is adaptable to individuals interests.

Which Tour Company? JY Travel & Tour

All Tours of Coron we did with JY Travel & Tours. We couldn’t recommend this company highly enough.

The staff were fun, professional and looked after our safety the entire time. They were also very helpful with information about the surrounds.

Not only are the staff fabulous but they serve a fabulous lunch consisting of grilled fish, chicken, pork, prawns, grilled vegetables, rich & fruit.

If you are looking for a tour in Coron, we would highly recommend this company.

You can find more information on  JY Travel & Tour   website . You can also them on Facebook &  Instagram .

Where to Stay in Coron

The trip runs upon demand using a large two-level motorized outrigger banca with two engines. Participants have their own single or double sea kayaks, sit-ins unless otherwise requested. These are used by participants to wend their way between idyllic sand-ringed and palm-fringed islands and explore the myriad lagoons of the Calamian-El Nido archipelago. With the boat shadowing, you can do as much or as little kayaking as you wish, professionally supervised by your kayak guide. The program is flexible, allowing sleeping on board or camping on the beaches near the boat’s nightly anchorage.

If it’s camping, access to your private island hideaway is by sea kayak paddled by you, or by your guide in a tiny outrigger or double kayak who’ll set up your comfy tent complete with mattress & pillow, hotel linen and towel. Most campsites will have a basic toilet. Where there isn’t a loo, there’ll be a small tented bathroom with a chemical toilet: Your shower is a solar bag shower under the stars.

Big Lagoon in El Nido

El Nido island-hopping boats used to go inside the Big Lagoon, but the local tourism office changed this. Now, the only way to go inside is by swimming or paddling a kayak through the narrow passageway. Once inside, enjoy swimming in its crystal-clear blue waters, with sunlight peering through the beautiful rock formations.

Secret Lagoon El Nido from above

To reach the Secret Lagoon or Hidden Lagoon, your El Nido Tour A boat will dock near a small white sand beach in the southern part of Miniloc Island. You'll have to get off the boat and pass through a rocky cave-like opening, so watch your head, especially during high tide. If it's low tide, you can easily wade into the opening.

Inside, you'll find a small natural pool surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. You can take a refreshing dip in the cool water and enjoy the soft white sand. Unlike other lagoons, the water here stays cooler because of the cliffs that provide shade.

Boat docked at Payong-payong beach

Another stop on this tour is Payong Payong Beach, located in the southern part of Miniloc Island in El Nido. The beach has stunning cliffs, rocks, and shady trees, perfect for picnics. Snorkeling is popular here due to the clear waters filled with fish and coral, and the gentle waves are great for swimming.

Keep in mind that there aren't any sports or activities available, so it's mainly a place to relax. Here, you can lounge on the sandy beach, swim, take photos, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of this secluded spot.

Shimizu Island Aerial view

Shimizu Island, one of the islands in El Nido’s Bacuit Bay, is the ideal tropical escape with its serene white-sand beach and vibrant marine life. Once you make your stop here, you can relax on the pristine beach or snorkel to discover a plethora of fish species in various colors and sizes.

Legend has it that the island got its name from a scuba diver named Shimizu, whose body was found on the island after he went missing exploring underwater tunnels in the area.

Shimizu Island is a popular lunch stopover for El Nido Tour A island-hopping. After enjoying a meal, you can continue swimming or rest under the shade of the limestone cliffs.

Seven Commandos Beach

Seven Commandos Beach, another renowned beach in El Nido , stretches 320 meters and boasts pristine white sand, coconut trees, and towering limestone cliffs in the backdrop. Although technically connected to the mainland of El Nido in Palawan, it can only be reached by boat.

Legends surround the beach's name; some say it's named after stranded soldiers, while others claim it's linked to a fishing vessel or a carved stone found by locals.

The beach offers ample space for activities like beach volleyball. Its gentle waves make it perfect for swimming and snorkeling, where you can discover its rich marine life.

Shimizu Island Tropical Vibes

One of the best ways to enjoy the stunning tourist spots of El Nido is through an island hopping tour. Here are some essential tips to make the most of your experience:

When you're heading out for El Nido island hopping , make sure you've got these essentials: sunscreen to protect your skin, a towel for drying off after swimming, drinking water to stay hydrated, and aqua shoes for comfortable walking on the beach and in the water.

Don't worry about bringing your own life vest; they're already provided in the boats. Just strap one on before you set out to explore the best beaches in El Nido .

If you want to go snorkeling, remember that snorkeling gear might not be included in your package. You can usually rent for an extra fee, or if you have your own gear, feel free to bring it along for the tour.

Kayaks are available as add-ons, giving you the chance to paddle around the crystal-clear waters and discover hidden coves and beaches at your own pace.

Each stop during your island-hopping tour usually lasts around an hour. Use this time wisely to enjoy the beauty of each location, whether it's lounging on the beach, snorkeling among colorful fishes, or snapping photos of the breathtaking scenery.

Keep in mind that the itinerary might change depending on the season or water conditions.

Your safety is important. Pay attention to any warnings from the Coast Guard, as tours might be canceled if conditions are deemed unsafe. When booking your tour, talk to your operator about refund policies in case of cancellations.

Help keep El Nido beautiful by not littering. Remember to take all your trash with you when you leave, leaving the islands pristine for future visitors to enjoy.
