Besides the great sunset views, there is an amazing amount of history packed into this little ship. From 1936 and Bering Sea patrols through WW2, in both the Atlantic and Pacific, Viet Nam, to the Mariel Boat-lift in 1980, INGHAM has seen it all. Decommissioned in 1988, INGHAM is just as her last crew left her. …

This is the real deal. If you can't climb a ladder, stay on the dock. If you want to give your kids an indication of how hard life can be, this is the place to bring them. They will never complain about their room size again. I question if we could even get a crew from the current generation as the living conditions on this vessel are amazingly stark and harsh by today's standard. It's a testament to the men that served on her and the perilous world we lived in during WWII. It is air conditioned inside so you can take your time and enjoy the fantastic displays and live, in a very small way, the experience of serving on such a vessel. It will either inspire you and your kids or appall them, but showing them is essential. Well done to the Museum for keeping her afloat. I can't imagine how you do it.

Very cool ship & very nice people! A lot of really neat and important history! Go check it out

Ship

We visited the ship to do the tour and then returned to partake in their weekly happy hour. The ship is a beauty . During your self guided tour there is audio that plays as you walk through the guts of the ship and see where the crew worked , slept , ate and prayed (there are even some former crew who chose their final resting place to be on the ship - their urns are located in the chapel). To fully enjoy your time , plan to spend 30 minutes to an hour touring the ship (there's lots to read so this may make your tour longer). The ship closes at 4pm and on Thursday , Friday , Saturday they open back up to offer a sunset happy hour. Be aware , they do not serve liquor (or at least didn't when we visited ) and the beer and wine selection is not the best . However , the sunset views are breathtaking and you get to drink and view the sunset on an over 80 year old highly decorated Coast Guard cutter! You can also bring your own food on board or purchase snacks from their bar. They do have a paid parking lot and there's also a playground with public restrooms nearby . Definitely worth a visit !

We toured the ship while on vacation and were very impressed. While purchasing the tickets, the docent asked if we knew anything about the history of the ship. He gave us an overview of the history from the building of the ship to current day which we appreciated. The self tour was fantastic and we liked that we could enjoy looking at the exhibits and rooms at our own pace. The museum at the front of the ship with photos and historical information was excellent. My husband and I both agreed that this tour was a highlight of our time in Key West.

My wife and I visited the Ingham on our honeymoon and would definitely visit again if only to support the cause. Ships like this need to be preserved for the public to see what keeps this great countries freedom! The Ingham is a great representation of the men, women and their hard work and we highly recommend adding this to your list of stops when in Key West!

Great place to watch the sunset but if you think you'll want a seat rather than standing, you'll want to arrive early as they fill up pretty quickly. They do have happy hour but do not expect high quality wines. Service is good. The staff is very friendly and welcoming.

If you're looking for a self-guided tour (with employees who need training in customer service) of a great piece of history, this one is for you. As a proud veteran of the Coast Guard, I really enjoyed bringing my wife and kids to see it and to answer their questions. I do think Coasties-both active duty and veteran should be shown some consideration on the admission price though. There were several opportunities to donate around the cutter, and they'd probably make even more money if I felt I had been shown any type of consideration at all. I would've be been more apt to throw some cash in those donation boxes. Now if you're looking to find a little camaraderie with other Coasties, forget it. When trying to engage the two gentlemen who work there about my being a fellow Coastie, and wanting to find out their stories, they obviously couldn't have cared less. It was all about taking our money and telling us not to trip or fall. When my wife had mentioned I was also a Coast Guard veteran, they completely ignored that fact. They were borderline rude. We were the only ones entering at the time, so it's not like they were slammed or anything. The cutter is also in pretty bad shape. Much of it could be fixed pretty simply and inexpensively. It makes one wonder where the 10.00/person admission money is going. The museum does see a pretty good amount of tourists overall and the donation boxes were pretty full, so it's not like they're hurting for money. Even the RHI they have on it needs some serious maintenance. It'd be really easy and inexpensive to fix that up, but....‍

Photo of Thomas S.

It's a decent tour and a fair price that goes to the preservation of the ship. As a prior service USMC I'm a little biased but I enjoyed the tour.

A jewel of a historic site. The self guided tour of this Coast Guard cutter is incredible and a must see in Key West!

Photo of Roman I.

Loved the tour, which isn't too long and not too short. Amazing to see the insides of a ship left as they were after service. Plenty of parking nearby. Bring your swimsuit, there's a wonderful park for the kids just outside the museum.

YOUR KEY WEST EXPERTS!

USCGC Ingham Museum

Located in the Truman Annex, the USCGC Ingham Museum is the perfect spot to see the quieter side of Key West.  The Ingham is a 327 foot long, 6200 horsepower cutter.  She held 300 men and served in World War II, the Korean war and Vietnam.  She has received 35 awards and was the most decorated vessel of her time.  She was commissioned in 1936 and served for 52 years, until her retirement in 1988.

Her Beginning

The Ingham’s first permanent home , in 1936, was Port Angeles, Washington.  There she participated in the annual Bering Sea patrols.

As part of the “Grand Banks Patrols” she moved to Boston in 1939.

In 1940, she was assigned to weather patrols.

Ingham

World War II

On December 15, 1942, the Ingham sank German U-boat U-626.  Later she served in the Mediterranean and served as the flagship for many landings in the Pacific Theater.

During this time, the Ingham carried a crew of 200 enlisted men and 18 officers.  She was a mini-destroyer and served as the Command Ship in MacArthur’s Maravelles, Corregidor and Manila campaigns.

Ingham

Kevin taking aim at Sunset!

Korea and Vietnam

The Ingham served during both Korea and Vietnam.  She was awarded two Presidential Citations for her Vietnam service – a rare accomplishment.  She is the most decorated ship in the Coast Guard and her ribbons and battle stars can be seen on her bridge.

Cuban Connection

In 1980, the Ingham served as one of the 1700 ships that helped hundreds of Cuban immigrants reach the US during the Mariel Boatlift.  It was during this time Cuba experienced a sharp downturn in its economy; which prompted the mass boatlift.  Approximately 10,000 Cubans sought asylum by taking refuge at the Peruvian embassy in Cuba.  The Cuban government stated anyone who wanted to leave could.  By October 1980, over 125,000 Cubans had reached Florida.

Ingham

Sunset is beautiful from her deck!

The Ingham is a National Historic Landmark and is a national memorial to all Coast Guard men and women who lost their lives in battle from World War II through Vietnam.

The museum is operated by veterans as a non-profit organization and is open Tuesday through Saturday 10am – 4pm.

Friday night come aboard and watch the sunset .  A small admission charge covers your first drink.  Sit, relax, listen to great 1940’s music and watch a beautiful Key West sunset away from the crowds.

Perfect spot for a cocktail!

Sunset from the deck of the USCGC INGHAM may have been the highlight of our trip to Key West. For a very small fee you can board the ship, take a seat, have a complimentary drink and watch the sunset over the Gulf. The ships owner regaled us with stories of the naval history of the bay area and his own years in the Coast Guard. It was an honor to meet him and watch the sunset from the decks of his very own Maritime Vessel. A must see......

Forget the craziness of Mallory Square, and take your sunset pictures here! They limit the number of people they allow onboard, so you'll have plenty of room to sit, take photos, and have a drink. What a great surprise to discover this gem!

History Buffs will absolutely love this museum. Others will appreciate the portrayal of this ship and its crew as it served from WWII thru Vietnam ending with its mission of saving lives. It is a time capsule filled with so much memorablia. With so much to do in Key Wesr, mark this as a "must do". Well worth it. So much history about the USCG and this ship.

My husband was in the Coast Guard for 22 years and it was an honor to be allowed to tour this wonderful piece of history. If you can't do narrow stairs, not a tour for you!

This is a must see if your a history fan. What a story this ship has to offer. Basically a self guided tour with personal touches from the owner. Both the ship and the owner are the same age by the way! We loved it. Easy walk from the Annex for us. They also do sunset cocktail hour on Friday and Saturday nights. We saw the Navy Seals training so it was extra exciting. Highly recommend!

coast guard tour key west

We visited the USCGC Ingham yesterday. For a small fee, you get to take a self-guided tour of the ship. There are folks on the ship that are very knowledgeable about the history of the ship (Bill and Alex were awesome!). When the ship was decommissioned, all of the stuff inside remained, so you're able to see some of the real history of the vessel. This is a decorated ship that was involved in wartime operations, and was even responsible for sinking a German U-boat. When the ship was decommissioned, it was set for the scrap yard or sinking, but the group that has it saved it. Worth your time to see some real maritime history.

America's Tall Ship, Coast Guard Cutter Eagle to Visit Key West

coast guard tour key west

KEY WEST, Fla. —  The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle is scheduled to arrive at the Mallory Square pier in Key West, Florida Friday, May 22 at 9 a.m. as part of their 2015 cadet summer training deployment.

The Eagle will be open for free public tours on Friday, May 22 from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, May 23-24 from 10 a.m. to 7 a.m.

At 295 feet in length, the Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the stars and stripes and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service.

Constructed in 1936 by the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, and originally commissioned as the Horst Wessel by the German Navy, the Eagle was taken by the United States as a war reparation following World War II.

With more than 23,500 square feet of sail and six miles of rigging, the Eagle has served as a classroom at sea for future Coast Guard officers since 1946, offering an at-sea leadership and professional development experience.  Currently, there are 150 cadets from the Coast Guard Academy embarked.  The summer deployment for the Barque spans 17 weeks, stopping at 14 port calls in three countries, with five different groups of cadets and officer candidates training onboard.

A permanent crew of eight officers and 57 enlisted personnel maintain the ship and guide the cadets through an underway and in-port training schedule, dedicated to learning the skills of navigation, damage control, watchstanding, engineering and deck seamanship.

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

For three weeks, there has been a nonstop effort to clean up debris, reopen the shipping channel and recover victims after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed .

On Tuesday, 11 News road on a U.S. Coast Guard ship to get an update on the progress.

Much of the steel has been moved since last Tuesday — at least what was above water. Officials said 80-90% of the debris from the crash is still underwater.

"The priorities of the Unified Command are to remove the wreckage from the main channel first, then to remove the Dali, then to remove all the other wreckage," Coast Guard Incident Commander Capt. David O'Connell said.

All of that work is going on simultaneously. Cranes on barges are moving huge pieces of steel, with one of the largest pieces coming out Tuesday. Other crews are underwater, working on a mangled mess of debris.

"There's all those trusses on the bottom. Some of those are buried into the mud, so they have to remove the mud before they can cut them and remove them. And then, in the middle of the channel, is where there's a catastrophic failure of the bridge where there's all sorts of beams and cantilever all mangled together, which is really going to be a more challenging part of the operation," O'Connell said.

In order to get the Dali to refloat, crews will need to remove 140 shipping containers. So far, they've removed 60. They're at the mercy of the weather for much of the operation with wind and lightning their biggest concerns.

"They're removing some of the containers from the Dali, (wind) has a big impact on that. It also has a big impact on doing the lifts of different steel sections. Lightning, in terms of worker safety for everybody. Rain has some impact. Some of the cranes they use can't get a good grip on lifting stuff," O'Connell said.

On Monday, dive teams found a fourth victim of the collapse in a vehicle underwater. There are still two men missing and presumed dead, and O'Connell said finding them is still a priority.

"The salvers are always on the lookout for vehicles that could contain those that are unaccounted for. We don't know when that will be or if that will be," he said.

Crews temporarily opened a channel Tuesday for recreational vehicles to get in and out for the first time since the collapse.

"That was a trial run to see how that went and see if we could handle that in terms of was there any conflict with the salvage operations. We're going to evaluate if we're going to open that on a more permanent basis or on the weekend," O'Connell said.

Officials said they are on target to open a secondary shipping channel by the end of the month and have the main channel reopened by the end of May.

Through the rest of April 2024, U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will continue removing wreckage to open the Limited Access Channel. By the end of May, the 50-foot-deep 700-foot-wide federal channel is scheduled to be opened. This sonar CODA image, provided by the U.S. Navy's Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV), shows bridge wreckage in the deepest part of the federal Port of Baltimore Shipping Channel, and one of the Francis Scott Key Bridge main supports. One of the two Temporary Alternate Channels (far-right) became operational about a week after the incident to accommodate empty barges, small tugboats and survey vessels. The metal tress framework (center of image) is currently slated to be removed by the end of April, making way for a 35-foot-deep by 280-foot-wide Limited Access Channel. The Limited Access Channel will permit larger vessels to transit in and out of the Port of Baltimore, such as marine tugs, Maritime Administration (MARAD) vessels and those used for Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipping. The numbers marked in this image (center-left) are representative of depth of the existing federal channel, as well as the clearances from the top of bridge wreckage to the surface of the Patapsco River. These measurements are critical for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to plan for ongoing wreckage removal and potential dredging operations needed to return the federal channel to a minimum depth of 50 feet and width of 700 feet. The Unified Command is continuing efforts in support of removing the M/V Dali, which is required to fully re-open the Fort McHenry Channel.

COAST GUARD CUTTER MOHAWK COMES HOME TO KEY WEST, FLORIDA

coast guard tour key west

The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mohawk returned on Sept. 12 to its home port of Key West after a 92-day deployment to Africa that started with an escort trip to Bahrain.

Kids, spouses, siblings and friends of Mohawk crew members held signs while watching the 270-foot ship pull up to its dock at Coast Guard Sector Key West at Trumbo Point.

“Is that Daddy’s boat? Where is he?” asked one tiny Coast Guard supporter while the ship backed into port.

Mohawk began its deployment by leading the trans-Atlantic escort of two newly commissioned 154-foot cutters from Key West to Bahrain, according to a Coast Guard press release.

“While on deployment, Mohawk made significant advances combating illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing by conducting multinational law enforcement operations at sea in the Atlantic Basin. Their efforts strengthened relationships with African nations, the release states.

“Mohawk’s crew also worked closely with eight partner nation navies, sailing nearly 19,000 nautical miles in support of American interests abroad. Leading training exercises at-sea and in port, Mohawk hosted diplomatic engagements and participated in community relations events during port visits to Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Portugal, Senegal, Sierra Leone and the Gambia. Mohawk was the first U.S. warship to moor in the Gambia since 1994,” states the Coast Guard release.

“I am extremely proud of this crew and all they have accomplished over the last three months,” said Cmdr. Andrew Pate, commanding officer of Mohawk. “We are operating in a global Coast Guard and Mohawk’s ability to deploy across the Atlantic Ocean and work alongside our European and Atlantic African partners to combat piracy and illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing drives home the United States’ commitment to security, stability and prosperity in the region.”

For three weeks, there has been a nonstop effort to clean up debris, reopen the shipping channel and recover victims after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed .

On Tuesday, sister station WBAL traveled on a U.S.

Crews need to remove 140 shipping containers from the Dali. To date they’ve removed 60 #wbal pic.twitter.com/zU7E6UCnx6 — Kim Dacey WBAL (@kimdaceywbal) April 16, 2024

Bridge closed

There are still two men missing and presumed dead, and O'Connell said finding them is still a priority.

memorial key bridge
