ATP Champions Tour Format

atp champions tour format

Traditionally, the Champions Tour consisted of around ten tournaments worldwide, with a year-ending “Champions Tennis” event held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

However, after the pandemic disrupted the tour for almost two years, the events have become less frequent, with only four events being played in 2022 in Delray Beach, Hurlingham, Brasil and London.

It’s also tricky for fans to follow, with little promotion, coverage or live scoring, and currently, there is no dedicated website for the Champions Tour.

Champions Tour events are typically played over four days, with eight-man fields competing against each other in a round-robin format, ensuring that all players feature in at least three matches.

Like the ATP Finals, the players are split into two groups of four. But rather than semi-finals, the top player from each group contests the final, while the two players who finish second in each group play for third and fourth places, respectively.

The Champions Tour does have prize money , but individual pay is not usually disclosed, with events displaying a headline figure, often in the 1 million dollar or 1 million euro ballpark.

2023 Champions Tour Schedule

atp champions tour schedule

The following Champions Tour events are scheduled for 2023:

The Season Ending Champions Tour in London

royal albert hall tennis

Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall was the season-ending finale to the ATP Champions Tour. The Royal Albert Hall is one of the UK’s most treasured venues and first opened in 1871; interestingly, Champions Tennis was the only annual sporting event to take place at the Royal Albert Hall.

Over the years, Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall welcomed a host of the biggest names and personalities on the ATP Champions Tour to play competitively in both singles and entertaining doubles matches, with Mansour Bahrami often taking to the court with his trick shots and comic timing.

The event has also boasted legends such as John McEnroe, Pat Rafter, Goran Ivanisevic debutantes Andy Roddick and Fernando Gonzalez, and Tim Henman. Tennis was played there for the last time in 2021.

ATP Legends Cup

atp legends cup

Alongside the Champions Tour, a separate Legends Cup was also played in 2022. This is a team competition series among tennis players that have been ranked top 20 in the world and are above the age of 33.

The Top 12 Group founded the Cup in Sweden in collaboration with the ATP and ATP Champions Tour.

In 2022, there were three events, and the plan for the future is eight competitions yearly, with the last competition each year being a grand finale.

The format is a three-day event (1 session each day); in each session, three matches are played – two singles and one doubles.

No player can play singles more than once daily, and at least three of the four players must play singles and doubles. No doubles combination is played more than once unless for the Decider on Day 3 if points are 9:9

The scoring is a pro Set to 8 games and a 10 points match tie break 8 (with a 2 points margin).

Points won for a match win differ per day:

 • Day 1: 1 point per win in each match
 • Day 2: 2 points per win in each match
 • Day 3: 3 points per win in each match

The winning team must reach 10 points. In the event of a tie, after all, nine matches are played, a final doubles Match Tie break to 10 points will be played to decide the winner.

So you could say it’s a bit like the Laver Cup!

Champions Tennis 2021 Preview: A final farewell to the Royal Albert Hall

The ATP Champions Tour has its season finale at the Royal Albert Hall with Champions Tennis 2021, its final year at the iconic London venue.

The year-ending event for the ATP Champions Tour returns to the Royal Albert Hall this November. The fan favourite show has seen Slam champions John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Pat Rafter, Pete Sampras and Goran Ivanisevic.

British tennis icons Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman also consistently entertain at the London showpiece, with a newly risen national tennis star making their debut at the event this year too.

British teen sensation and US Open champion Emma Raducanu will make her Champions Tennis debut in the historic auditorium. The rising talent will play an exhibition hosted by Champions Tour veteran Mansour Bahrami at 12pm on Sunday 28th November.

What can fans expect?

The last Champions Tennis was held in 2019 after the 2020 event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The format that year saw three teams captained by Tim Henman, Goran Ivanisevic and Greg Rusedski.

Team Tim consisted of Henman, newly retired David Ferrer and two-time Slam finalist Mark Philippoussis. Ivanisevic was joined by 2004 Roland Garros doubles champion Xavier Malisse and former world number one and 2003 Roland Garros singles champion Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Finally, Team Rusedski boasted Rusedski, former world number two Tommy Haas and 2006 Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis. After the round robin stage, in which each team faced each other in two singles and a doubles, Team Henman were eliminated as Team Rusedski and Team Goran faced off in the final.

Team Greg came out on top in that final 3-1 to win the 2019 Champions Tennis trophy.

What do players say about it?

Tim Henman loves playing the season-ending Champions Tour event. “It’s such an iconic venue. I’ll never get bored of playing tennis here,” the former world number four has said.

“This is our Wimbledon, it’s an unbelievable spot,” seven-time Slam singles champion John McEnroe said of playing at Royal Albert Hall. “This is the cream of the crop,” states two-time US Open champion Pat Rafter.

“To be here and see it in person, it’s a special place,” former world number one Andy Roddick expressed.

The event runs from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th November. Each day will have an afternoon and an evening session, for which tickets are sold separately.

As in 2019, each day will have three matches per session; two competitive singles matches and one competitive doubles match. The final will take place on Sunday night following the Raducanu-Bahrami exhibition event.

Champions Tennis Goran Ivanisevic

Where is the event held?

The event is held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK on indoor hard courts. The venue first hosted Champions Tennis back in 1997, and has done so every year since.

Since its opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the historic London venue has hosted countless arts and entertainment events. The Hall stages more than 390 shows in the main auditorium annually, including a wide variety of concerts, ballet, opera and film screenings with live orchestral accompaniment. Sports, awards ceremonies, school and community events, and charity performances and banquets are also among the events hosted there.

TURIN, Italy (AP) — Novak Djokovic ended the year just as he started it — by setting records.

The top-ranked Djokovic won a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title on Sunday with a straight-set victory over home favorite Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic took 1 hour, 43 minutes to win 6-3, 6-3 as the Serbian continues to reach new heights at the age of 36.

He started 2023 with a record-extending 10th Australian Open title and went on to claim his 23rd Grand Slam singles trophy at the French Open, breaking Rafael Nadal’s mark. Djokovic, who lost the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz, also won the U.S. Open .

“One of the best seasons I’ve had in my life, no doubt,” Djokovic said. “To crown it with a win against a hometown hero in Jannik, who has played amazing tennis this week, is phenomenal.”

Djokovic entered Sunday’s final tied with Roger Federer on six titles at the season-ending tournament for the year’s top eight players.

And he stretched out his arms and beamed broadly after clinching his seventh when Sinner double-faulted.

The victory had echoes of the clinical way Djokovic dispatched second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz in Saturday’s semifinal encounter.

United States' Jessica Pegula celebrates after beating Russia's Anna Kalinskaya in their WTA women's tennis final match in Berlin, Sunday, June 23, 2024. (Hannes P. Albert/dpa via AP)

“I’m very proud of the performances these last two days against Alcaraz and Sinner, probably the best two players in the world next to me and (Daniil) Medvedev at the moment, and the way they have been playing I had to step it up,” Djokovic said.

“I had to win the matches and not wait for them to hand me the victory and that’s what I’ve done. I think I tactically played different today than I have in the group stage against Jannik, and just overall it was a phenomenal week.”

It was his fourth win over Sinner, who had recorded a first-ever victory against Djokovic in the group stage in Turin and was the first Italian to reach the final.

But Djokovic was in imperious form on Sunday and won 14 straight points from the end of the first set to the third game of the second to leave him firmly in control and subdue the Turin crowd.

Djokovic had already secured the year-end No. 1 ranking for a record-extending eighth time by winning his opening match at the ATP Finals.

After this tournament, Djokovic will become the first player to hold the No. 1 ranking for 400 weeks, with Roger Federer at 310 the only other man to eclipse the 300-week mark.

It was also only the second time in the last 15 years that a player has made the finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP Finals. The only previous occasion was when Djokovic did it in 2015.

Sinner came into the final having won all of his matches in Turin and backed by a fervent home crowd, who had dreams of him becoming the first Italian to win the tournament in its 54-year history.

But the 22-year-old Sinner could offer little in response to a master class from Djokovic, especially in a blistering first set that lasted just 38 minutes and saw the Serbian win 20 of 22 service points. Djokovic also served up 13 aces during the match.

“Congratulations to you (Novak) for this week and not only: you started the season by winning and you ended it by winning, you won three Slams and many other tournaments,” Sinner said. “What else is there to say? You’re an inspiration not only for all those watching, but especially for the players.

“I also want to thank my team … we saw also today that I can still improve a lot but we can look at the positive things from this season. When we started the year I was one player and now I’m another. Thanks to you who have helped me understand so many things.”

2024 Travelers Championship leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler first since Tiger Woods to win six events in season

Scheffler continues cleaning up at signature events while becoming the fourth golfer since 1983 to win six or more tournaments in one season.

It appears as if last week's U.S. Open was the exception and not the rule as it relates to Scottie Scheffler's level of play this year. The No. 1 golfer in the world had won five of his eight prior events before nearly missing the cut last week at Pinehurst No. 2, ultimately placing T41 for his worst finish since the fall of 2022. Scheffler has immediately rebounded by winning a sixth tournament across his last 10 starts on Sunday at the 2024 Travelers Championship.

The fourth round itself was mostly straightforward for Scheffler ... until the end. His card was clean with five birdies and no bogeys, another 65 in a season full of them. He finished at 22 under, one off of Keegan Bradley's scoring record of 23 under from a year ago. But a disruption on the 72nd hole in the form of protesters -- just before Scheffler lined up a potential tournament-winning birdie putt -- briefly threw the event into chaos.

The scene was cleared quickly, though Scheffler's ensuing putt settled just inches from the hole. That allowed 18-, 36- and 54-hole leader Tom Kim to drain a birdie on the last hole of regulation, forcing a playoff. PGA Tour officials cut a new the hole location amid debris left over from the protestors, and the golfers returned to the 18th to begin the sudden death playoff.

Scheffler took care of business in short order with a par, but Kim's approach landed in a bunker and ultimately led to a bogey.

Over the last 19 holes at TPC River Highlands, Scottie Scheffler did what Scottie Scheffler does. He made good decisions and finished second in the field from tee to green. He let everyone around him fall by the wayside until he was the only one left standing in the end. This is not always how it goes -- sometimes Kim will make birdie in the playoff instead of bogey -- but this is basically how it's gone for most of 2024 for Scheffler.

This week's win for Scheffler was historic. All of them are at this point in his season. Since 1983, only three other golfers have won six times in a year. With two months left in the season and around five events remaining on his expected schedule, Scheffler has a chance to move even further up that list.

Impressively, all of Scheffler's victories in 2024 have come at big-time events. Of the 13 best field in golf this year, according to the Official World Golf Rankings, Scheffler has won six of them (46%).

The six wins: Four signature events, a major championship (the Masters) and The Players Championship. The six winner's checks have Scheffler earning nearly $28 million for the year , $7 million more than he picked up a year ago when he previously set the all-time record for money earned in a single season.

The craziest realization (and best compliment) about Scottie is that this has become rote. Another week, another Scheffler win. Yawn. That has become a bit of the disposition of golf fans toward what is happening. The numbers belie the routine nature of what he is doing though because the numbers tell the following story: This simply never happens.

It's happening this year, though, and Scheffler is architecting one of the great seasons in PGA Tour history with a chance at a second major championship in just under a month and another Tiger-laden step up the historic ladder. Grade: A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the 2024 Travelers Championship.

2. Tom Kim (-22): It was a tough weekend for Kim, who led this tournament for so long before losing to his birthday buddy and friend, Scheffler, in that playoff. Still, this was Kim's best event of the year by far. He nearly accomplished what nobody else has seemed capable of accomplishing by pulling back even with Scheffler on the 72nd hole and sending the event to a playoff. He now has some confidence built for the summer as he heads to the Open Championship looking to improve upon his T2 finish a year ago. Kim is playing his best golf, and for the last month, he has been the iron player everyone thought he could become a few years ago when he first got going on the PGA Tour. I am broadly neutral on his long-term outlook but impressed by his last several starts. The ceiling is not as high as some might think, but the floor could certainly be higher than I believed. Grade: A+

T3. Tom Hoge, Sungjae Im (-19)

T5. Akshay Bhatia (-18): Bhatia has the look, the charisma and the ball striking ability of a future superstar. It's easy to forget with players like him and Im, who have been on tour since they were teenagers, they are still in their early 20s with decades to go. But Bhatia is four years younger than Viktor Hovland right now. He's making a real leap this year as a player, and he has the numbers to prove it. He's gone from basically being an average (or strokes gained 0.0) PGA Tour player to gaining 1.0 strokes per round on average PGA Tour fields. In other words, that is basically the difference between Martin Laird and Shane Lowry. A big win could be on deck for him. Grade: A

T9. Cameron Young (-17): For a while, it looked like 59-59 was in play for Young. As it was, he still took a look at the all time weekend scoring record of 122 set by Ludvig Aberg at the RSM Classic in a win last fall. Young eventually settled at 125 shots for the weekend. He's had an up and down year to date with some moments of good but a lot of bad in between. For example: He has three top fives worldwide this year but no top 20s since the Masters. This is a good jump start for him going into the summer as he tries to contend, like he did the last two years, at the Open Championship. Grade: A

T27. Ludvig Aberg (-11): The finish was not there, but a week after contending for the U.S. Open, Aberg finished 5th in a field of the best hitters in the world in strokes gained tee to green. He seems to be getting more consistently better as his second year progresses, and it does feel like a monstrous victory is on deck. Grade: B

Scottie wins it with a par at the first playoff hole!

Kim has 36 feet for par after getting out of the front bunker. If he doesn't make it, this tournament is over.

Kim is in a horrible position on his second shot with a fried egg in the front bunker. Scheffler has what looks like 10-15 feet for birdie and a probable win.

Kim and Scheffler in good shape off the tee

Both players hit good tee shots off the 18th tee and should be in good position for a look at making birdie and winning the tournament on the 18th hole.

Travelers Championship playoff rules

Sudden death starting on the 18th hole. If they're still tied, they'll head back to the 18th hole and play it again. After that, it's No. 17 and then 18 again after that.

They are cutting a new hole on No. 18.

capture-2024-06-23-152731.png

It sounds like they might be cutting a new hole for the Travelers playoff between Scottie and Tom Kim, which is wild and not something I've ever heard of a tournament doing. The reason? Protesters throwing smoke bombs onto the green at the 18th hole of regulation.

Tom Kim forces playoff

Wow, Tom Kim just got up and down from the 18th fairway to force a playoff with Scottie Scheffler at the Travelers Championship. Absolutely incredible clutch shot.

Canada's Weir finishes 2nd to Harrington at PGA Champions event

Padraig Harrington won the Dick's Sporting Goods Open for the third consecutive year on Sunday, making a key par save on the par-3 17th to hold on for a 4-under 68 and a one-shot victory over Canadian Mike Weir.

Harrington captured his eighth PGA Tour Champions title and his second of the year.

Weir was playing two groups ahead of Harrington and closed to within one shot by making birdie on the 17th hole. Harrington missed the green to the right and faced a difficult lie, with the ball sitting down on a slight slope.

He chipped it about eight feet past the hole and made the par putt, and then closed out with a par on the 18th at En-Joie Golf Club to finish at 15-under 201.

"I suppose I'm good value for money," Harrington said. "When I was coming down that stretch, you're not really sure what you're going to get. I'm either going to hit it stone dead or I'm going to have to get it up and down out of some weird place. It's entertaining. I wish it wasn't as entertaining."

Weir comes up just short of a win at PGA Tour Champions event

The victory comes one week after Harrington was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame during the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Weir closed with a 67.

Ken Duke (68), Mark Hensby (66) and Ken Tanigawa (70) tied for third, two shots behind. Tanigawa was part of a three-way tie for the 36-hole lead with Harrington and Stephen Ames.

Calgary's Stephen Ames was tied for the lead after 36 holes and was still in the mix until making bogey on the 13th and 14th holes to fall too far behind to make a run. He held onto his points lead in the Charles Schwab Cup.

#BREAKING Climate Activists Spray Smoke as they STORM THE GREEN at the 18th Hole of the PGA Tour as SCOTTIE SCHEFFLERS was finishing his game. pic.twitter.com/zfHJn68gQd — @ScooterCasterNY

Protestors disrupt Scheffler's 6th win of season

Six people protesting climate change came out of the crowd and stormed the 18th green while the leaders were lining up their putts on the final hole of regulation at the Travelers Championship on Sunday, delaying the finish for about five minutes.

The protesters sprayed white and red powder, leaving stains on the grass before Scottie Scheffler, Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia finished their rounds. At least one of the group was wearing a white T-shirt that said, "NO GOLF ON A DEAD PLANET."

After the protesters were tackled by police and taken off, Scheffler left a potential 26-foot clincher from the fringe on the right edge of the cup, then tapped in for par.

Kim, who trailed by one stroke heading into the final hole, sank a 10-foot birdie putt to tie Scheffler and send the tournament to a sudden-death playoff.

Scheffler won with a par on the first playoff hole, the 18th. After the players finished in regulation, workers with leaf blowers came out to clean off the remaining powder, and the hole location was moved before the playoff.

The crowd surrounding the 18th green heckled the protesters by yelling profanities and cheered the police who intervened.

Korean Amy Yang claims her 1st career LPGA major tournament victory

Amy yang captures 1st major with win at women's pga.

Amy Yang built a huge lead and survived a couple of late mistakes to win her long-awaited first major title on Sunday, a three-shot victory in the KMPG Women's PGA Championship.

Yang closed with an even-par 72 at Sahalee to finish at 7-under 281. She was nearly flawless for the first 15 holes and reached 10 under for the tournament for a seven-shot lead before running into a little bit of trouble. But none of her pursuers was able to mount a significant charge.

Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., finished tied for 22nd at 3 over.

Hatton wins LIV Nashville event

Tyrrell Hatton won the inaugural LIV Golf Nashville event Sunday, easily holding off Jon Rahm and two-time U.S. Open champ Bryson DeChambeau for the Englishman's first victory since January 2021 at Abu Dhabi.

Hatton took a three-stroke lead into the round, and shot a 6-under 65 to polish off a six-stroke win at The Grove. Hatton had eight birdies and two bogeys to finish at 19-under 194 trying to avoid looking at a leaderboard until the 17th green.
