Cool Cruiser

We have never eaten at the "paying" restaurants onboard ....never felt the need to to be honest....but just seen the Glass House menu on Aurora and might try it for a change from Christmas fayre on our December cruise.  Can anyone give me any idea as to the costs for these "pay" venues please. Thanks

In general we have eaten at 'extra cost' restaurants on both P&O and Marella.  They can be excellent and worth the money, but it does depend on what your personal favourite dining experience is. We have always found P&O MDR excellent and, pre covid, we have been on tables with great table companions that we chose to stay eating with each night.

We are on Aurora as from 28th February, so I will report back after the cruise 😃

But, expect to pay upwards of £20 per person for a speciality restaurant, with drinks extra on top. I think the range may be £20 - £35 per person. Current cruisers on other P&O ships may be able to expand on that.

The last time we did this speciality dining (December 21), we paid an extra £24.99 per person for a 3 course Tapas restaurant (Marella), not realising that to get the 'meat and fish hanging skewer content, cost an additional £9.99 per person. So, we had a mixed tapas starter on a small dinner plate shared between 2 people, then 3 small tapas bowls each (think here small cigarette stubbing bowl, and a desert. So in reality, that should have been costed at an extra £35 per person (which may have put some people off). My husband did order the skewer in the end, but none of us realised that the cigarette bowls would be so small. One of mine was mushrooms and I think it contained 2 tablespoons of finely sliced mushrooms  🤣 .

As comparison, on the same 'line' in May 2019, we had 2 fabulous meals in speciality restaurants.

My experience of P&O (only Britannia and Azura to date) is that the speciality restaurants are very good indeed and we would always look to book at least one evening each week of the cruise.

I agree about p&o food and we found Marcella restaurants was good if you could actually book one, but still cannot understand the deconstructed prawn cocktail without any lettuce

We had no problem booking on Discovery in 2019 (the Kora La was the best speciality restaurant we tried), or Explorer (2 cruises in 2021). The TV booking facility from our cabins last year helped, as we just used that to plan the weeks the first days we were onboard. 😄

Deconstructed prawn cocktail, I think the menu was constructed with 'current fashion' in mind, rather than classic favourites. Quite often a mistake I think  😃 .

After the December Explorer cruise, we felt that the overall quality of the restaurant food had perhaps gone down since 2019 (from experience of both Tapas and Indian restaurant meals in December) But, I am sure the upcoming P&O menus will be great. As said, I will report back from Aurora. We have purchased the ships wifi, so I will be able to feedback en route so to speak. I think many others will do as well, as its Aurora's first cruise out for over 2 years.

I shall look forward to reading your reports as we sail on Aurora on 1st April.

Could you please tell me if there is/was the opportunity to book any speciality restaurant before sailing?  The booking button is still showing "coming soon"!

Hope you have a super cruise.

Epicurean on Iona is £22pp less any loyalty discount you have if you book and pay online.

Thanks  😄 .

As to the pre booking of restaurants, no. I tried again only yesterday and it cannot be done. So it looks like everything will be via the P&O 'App' once we are onboard. This inability to pre book also seems to apply to the gym / spa. The my booking etc programme seems to show the ability to book, but once in  the basket, you cannot go any further. So we have given up, and will see what the process is on board.

From what I can see Aurora only had Sindhu (£10 booking fee), Glass House and Beach House.

Thank you for the update Gizmo19. I have the "app" set up on my phone from last summer's staycation cruises, so will book as soon as I can pick up the ship's WiFi. Really hope the Glass House is as good as it was on Britannia.

Hope you have a wonderful cruise to the Caribbean - look after Aurora for us  😆

Select or Early Saver is it worth the Extra?

By Nad1611 , April 30, 2022 in P&O Cruises ( UK )

Cool Cruiser

Hi All. Having got some brilliant advice on here previously, I'm back for some more hopefully. My husband and I have only been on River Cruises before so are very much Cruise virgins. We're booking a cruise to Norway and can choose between paying the Early Saver or Select Price with it's added benefits. My question is, is it worth the extra? We'd travel to Southampton by car, so can use the included parking, but just wondered.

Also if we did go for Select where available we can choose our cabin and I've no idea what we should look for in terms of what's best. I have found some articles on which cabins to avoid, but if anyone has any advice that'd be great too. We'd go for a standard balcony room. Thanks in advance.

I think it is worth it just to get the choice of cabin location - of course it depends how much it is though.

Choice of cabin location is a personal thing. Most places seem to say to have one with cabins above and below as it’s quieter than having a bar etc. underneath. If you have a forward or aft one you can end up a long way away from things but I’ve never found that a problem. Higher up cabins have a bit more movement if the sea is rough but again, never found it a problem.

Josy1953

We invariably choose the Select fare because we like to chose our cabin rather than have one allocated by the cruise line that may be in a noisy position on the ship such as above the theatre where you can hear shows being rehearsed during the day and taking place at night.

You pay your monthly you make your choice.

Like

So there's a difference of roughly £500 within which you get £55 on bboard spending per person, car parking at the terminal, prioroty for upgrades and some flexibility in changing booking.

I suppose I'd rather have something where there's less roll and reasonable  expectation of less noise (obviously within reason).

Yes this is the sort of thing we'd want to avoid, so I guess I need to do a bit of research into where things are on the ship and go from there.

What ship and how long is the cruise?

If it is Iona Avoid Deck 8 balconies.

We always book select because I want to pick the cabin I want and not a cabin allocated from cabins no one else wants plus we get a good OBC and free shuttles in ports.

We got extra OBC on a promotion booking a cruise before May 31st.

We prefer either aft cabins or a mid deck mid ship cabin.

When you pick your cabin you are happy with it is advisable to let your TA or P&O know that you Do Not want an upgrade because they can move you to a cabin of a similar grade but worse location.

This is great. It's the Aurora for 12 days. Good lot of info here, so I'll take a look. Think it's probably worth the extra then really. Thanks All.

If O remember our first cruises, we had no idea what to expect and it was not until about our 3rd or 4th cruise that we began to take more interest in where we were.

However a couple of tips we now use, we always book a cabin with accommodation decks above and below us, this avoids noise from entertainment venues or sunbeds being moved about above us, we try to avoid booking a balcony cabin too high up because the pool deck is generally wider than the accommodation decks and leaves the balcony in too much shade.

Otherwise just enjoy yourselves.

Is that each or for both of you?  Also which ship are you looking at - if it's Iona a Saver balcony or conservatory suite is most definitely not advisable due to the deck 8 conundrum.

No that’s £500 per cabin. As stated it’s on the Aurora.  The deck 8 conundrum doesn’t mean anything to me I’m afraid. Although it’s a moot point.

Yes think this will be us on our first cruise, but I guess there’s a first time for everything and we don’t mind learning as we go along. All part of the fun.  Thanks for the tips and reassurance.

BillieJeanKaraokeKing

Personally, I generally find the Select fares prohibitive, and the benefits not really worth it for me (although on the odd occasion it has felt viable for me, and I have paid it).

Saving some money to use elsewhere is more often than not better for me than guaranteeing location.  Similar with a balcony, I have a general rule that more than £200pppw is typically too much for me.

But ultimately it is a personal thing as to what's important to you and how much you're prepared to pay for it - our thresholds and ideas are all different.  😊

12 minutes ago, Nad1611 said: Yes think this will be us on our first cruise, but I guess there’s a first time for everything and we don’t mind learning as we go along. All part of the fun.  Thanks for the tips and reassurance.

Learning as you go along is a good philosophy but better if you are not learning from avoidable mistakes. As far as your cabin is concerned, better to get it right first time and choosing you cabin, following advice from experienced cruisers, on a select fare would be a good way to reduce the chance of a mistake. Make sure you reject the chance of an upgrade when you book as others have sensibly suggested. The extra £500 would be well spent doing this and give you other benefits in addition to cabin choice.

Hi. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your advice and guidance. Booked our `cruise for 2024 and was able to choose the cabin we wanted using the Select payment. All in all worth it in my book. We were able to safely transfer our deposit too as was suggested here. So thanks again.

Thanks

Great news and best decision taking select fare imo.

5,000+ Club

We have just booked the Arvia transatlantic from Barbados in March 2023. We prefer an aft cabin and the only way to get one on the very back is to pay the extra for Select. We got the last available one. Whew.

One tip I would give is enjoy the first cruise feeling and soak everything in. We still love cruising,  but you never have the first cruise feeling again.

And select fare is definitely worth the extra in my opinion.
