By Evan Minsker

Porches

Porches —the musical project of Aaron Maine—is back with another new song from All Day Gentle Hold ! (which is out this Friday, October 8, via Domino ). Following “Okay,” “ Lately ,” and “ I Miss That ,” he’s shared “ Back3School ” and its music video. He’s also announced a 2022 tour. Find those dates and watch the video below.

“This song is a mystery to me, impending doom mixed with total bliss,” Maine said of the new single. “The ‘back to school’ trope, but with an underlying anxiety that something might be terribly wrong, or maybe everything is just fine.”

Porches’ Pool was named one of Pitchfork’s “ 50 Best Albums of 2016 .”

Was looking forward to this for a while - Pool is one of my favourite albums of the last year - and it didn't disappoint. An already fantastic gig featured a great cameo from Dev Hynes, who proved to be a super-nice guy when we chatted with / drunkenly rambled at him after the show. Awesome evening all round basically

Phoenix kick off Alpha Zulu Tour at Palace Theater

Phoenix performed at Palace Theater in St. Paul on Tuesday, September 6, 2022. Porches was the opening act.

September 07, 2022

The last time Phoenix played in Minnesota, the Twins were playing their inaugural season at Target Field. We still had to slog to Wisconsin to buy beer on Sundays, and the blue line was our sole form of metro rail transit. But in the years since their August 2010 show at the State Theatre, the band put out two albums (with another on the way), toured worldwide, and sang a Christmas song with Bill Murray .

As for Minnesota, we can buy our own beer on Sundays now, we built another train line (with another on the way), and the Twins … well, we don’t need to talk about the Twins anymore. While the crowd anxiously awaited the start of Tuesday’s Phoenix show at the Palace Theater, one thing was certain: Minnesota’s love for the band has only grown over the past 12 years.

Phoenix rewarded our midwestern patience tenfold by kicking off their North American Alpha Zulu Tour at the Palace. Along for the ride was the tour’s opener, Porches.

A band performs on a stage lit by multicolor lights

Porches is the brainchild of New York-based musician Aaron Maine and, as is often the case with projects described as a “brainchild,” the result is tough to classify into a singular genre. During a 40-ish-minute set, the band (Maine plus a drummer and guitarist) combined catchy synth loops, grungy guitar-driven indie rock, and auto-tuned vocals into something that, for this review, we’ll just refer to as “porch-core.”

Maine is a man of few words, but when he did throw some banter towards the crowd, it was gracious and appreciative. Following the band’s opening song (“Okay”): “I love you. I’m so excited to be here. Thank you for having us.” A few more songs: “St. Paul is my new favorite f*cking city.” A few more: “I’m so excited to see Phoenix tonight.”

There’s a certain heaviness present in Porches’ live show that doesn’t always come through on their albums. That’s likely due to the slew of backing tracks accompanying the trio onstage. Pre-tracked synths, basslines, auxiliary percussion, and additional guitars and vocals combine with the live tracks to create an impressive wall of sound that compliments the band’s energy well.

As Porches wrapped up their set, crowd chatter quickly filled the space and grew louder as techs readied the stage. Eventually, a curtain dropped, signaling Phoenix’s triumphant Minnesota return was nearly upon us.

A band performs on a stage lit by multicolor lights

The lights finally dimmed to intense applause, but the curtain didn’t rise. Instead, the stage panels flanking either side and top of the curtain illuminated as a giant French Baroque arch — no doubt a nod to the band’s Versailles origins. The scene remained for a moment before the curtain rose to reveal Phoenix in all their long-awaited glory.

The core of Phoenix consists of singer Thomas Mars, bassist Deck D'Arcy, and brothers Laurent Brancowitz and Christian Mazzalai on guitar. Rounding out the onstage contingent are longtime touring members Robin Coudert on keys and Thomas Hedlund on drums. (Hedlund’s main gig is drumming for Swedish post-metal band Cult of Luna, where he’s known to beat the ever-loving meatballs out of his drums . As it turns out, he hits just as hard while playing synth-pop!)

The band immediately kicked into “Lisztomania” from their 2009 Grammy-award-winning album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix as the entire stage came alive before us. Carrying through the Baroque motif, the band was immersed in a scene from inside a French palace overlooking a snow-capped mountain. At the arrival of the first chorus, the scene faded, and the stage was illuminated in strobe lights while even brighter lights flashed into the crowd. Then back to the French palace. Then back to the strobes. Then the entire stage was a massive diamond kaleidoscope.

The choreographed chaos of the visuals accompanying “Lisztomania” set the tone for the rest of the show. As the band jumped from song to song, multi-dimensional lights and screens turned every square inch of the stage into a magnificent spectacle. The lights and visuals changed constantly. We went from the French countryside to Tron -like light bars to neon lights to brilliant full washes of color to bright patterns to anything else that Phoenix decided we needed to see. During “Trying To Be Cool,” Mars peered at the crowd through a set of binoculars that were actually a camera. The footage was live-streamed to the screen behind the band like some sort of Phoenix kiss cam.

While all those changing scenes and visuals could easily come across as gimmicky or distracting if not executed properly, it was anything but. It was chaotically beautiful, and it only strengthened the band’s already flawless performance.

Despite releasing two albums since their Minnesota appearance, eight of the band’s 19-song set were from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix . They clearly know what people want to hear because those eight tracks received by far the biggest reaction from the nostalgia-seeking crowd.

Also nestled in the set were the band’s two latest singles: “Alpha Zulu” and “Tonight.” First release back in June, “ Alpha Zulu ” hints at a shift towards more straightforward synth-pop. At times it’s reminiscent of Arizona-based (Tempe, not Phoenix!) electronic duo Body of Light and it’s an absolute bop. By the end of “Alpha Zulu,” no one was standing still. Every head was bobbing; every foot was tapping.

“Tonight” is so recent that it wasn’t even released when they played it. “This is a new song. It’s coming out tomorrow. It’s called “Tonight.” By now, if you’re reading this, “Tonight” is available on all streaming platforms. But for a few hours, those present at the Palace were some of the only people in the world to have heard this song which seems like a nice way for Phoenix to say, “Hey, sorry we were gone so long.”

The band wrapped their main set with “Rome,” and the curtain again came down. During what seemed like the longest delay between a set and an encore ever, the crowd grew restless. Endless cheering and “one more song” chants grew. Finally, the curtain rose to reveal Mars, D'Arcy, and a chunky purple grand piano. The duo played through “Fior di Latte” before attempting a few bars of “Starfish and Coffee” by Prince ( and the Muppets, of course ).

With the crowd’s help, Mars called the rest of the band back onstage to plow through the final song of the evening, “1901.” After what seemed like the loudest sing-along in human history, Mars dropped off stage and began working his way through the crowd to personally thank people for coming to the show. Eventually, as he made his way back towards the stage, he stood atop the crowd for a moment to wave at everyone and once again thank people for coming.

No, no, Phoenix. Thank YOU for finally coming back to Minnesota and bringing such a spectacular evening with you.

The sixth album by Phoenix sounds like the perfect soundtrack to come from a nation that, despite everything going on elsewhere in the world, still seems to possess hope and joy in great abundance.

The world seemed to breathe a sigh of relief after the French Presidential elec- tion in May. However, when the four school friends from Versailles (Christian Mazzalai, Laurent Brancowitz, Thomas Mars & Deck d’Arcy), now in their early forties, began writing and recording the songs that would make up Ti Amo (10 of them, as always) it didn’t look like they were in step with the national mood at all.

They started work in 2014, shortly after, Charlie Hebdo happened. Then the Ba- taclan happened when they were in the studio, just a 20-minute walk from the terrorist attack on the concert hall.

“There was this feeling the world as we knew it was collapsing before our eyes,” explains guitarist Laurent Brancowitz. But strangely, the gloom was not being reflected in the songs the band were writing. “To our great amazement, amid the geopolitical tension and general darkness, the music we were creating was sounding so joyful, romantic and carefree.”

They came together in a new, unfamiliar studio space, as they do for each new record. “Having our own studio would be a danger for us – the end,” bassist Deck d’Arcy speculates. This time they occupied the top floor of La Gaîté Lyrique in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, a former theatre that was refurbished as a centre for arts and digital creatives in the late 2000s.

Mazzalai, Brancowitz and d’Arcy began composing together, with Mars joining them from his home in Manhattan for 10 days out of every month. There they kept a strict 9-to-5 discipline for months, unlike past sessions of night work. They recorded the whole process – hundreds of hours of music. The favoured songs that eventually emerged featured sparkling synths dominating over gui- tars. The guitars that were present were often altered electronically.

J-Boy, the first single, is an acronym for “Just Because Of You”, the repeated phrase of a digital love song that twinkles with the unhurried bliss of a long night on a dancefloor. There’s a disco feel to Tuttifrutti and a cocktail hour sunset sound to Goodbye Soleil. And title track Ti Amo melds a funky bassline to bold synths with an irresistible energy, while Thomas Mars sings of gelato, champagne and prosecco.

Ti Amo (Italian for “I love you”) is though not

a decidedly apolitical record,

being political is its own statement in 2017.

While the record still sounds positively French, Brancowitz explains that “It’s an album about our European, latin roots, our fantasized version of Italy. A lost par- adise made of eternal Roman summers (hyper-light, hyper-clarity, pistachio gelato), juke-boxes on the beach, Monica Vitti and Marcello Mastroiani, fearless desire and Antique marble.”

Their collaborator Pierrick Devin joined them as they explored (Devin would re- cord the album, co-producing it with the band and mixing part of it alongside Mi- chael Brauer), and their longtime producer, Philippe Zdar, was never far away, giving them special guidance during his studio visits.

Spending their days in Paris, reading the news, dreaming of Italy, they could be in no doubt that they were far removed from the preoccupations of the rest of their country. But Mars wouldn’t call his band’s work escapism as such. “I think you can tell it’s a 2017 record but there is this detachment and distance,” he says. “To me that’s not denial or escapism. It’s conscious, it’s what music and art are supposed to be: a world of possibilities.”

Brancowitz agrees that although they knew that the songs felt strange for the times, it was impossible to resist them. “At first there was this slight feeling of guilt, before we understood that abandoning ourselves to the healing power of music was exactly what we had to do.”

Now, in slightly more positive times, everyone can enjoy Ti Amo’s bright, sum- mery sounds for what they are. The album sits comfortably beside Phoenix’s fin- est work, such as their breakthrough fourth album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. A gold-seller in multiple countries, with a platinum single in the shape of 1901, it’s won a Grammy in 2009 for Best Alternative Music Album and is the one that put the band where they are today: adored festival headliners known for their showmanship and Mars’s frequent forays into the crowds.

Phoenix shouldn’t be missed at this summer’s festival appearances, which in- clude top slots at Glastonbury, New York’s Gorvernors Ball and Japan’s Summer Sonic.

If the sun is shining, Phoenix have got the right songs for the occasion.

Cut Copy is a GRAMMY® nominated, ARIA award-winning musical act with numerous festival-headling slots and over 1,000 sold-out headline shows spanning several continents to date. Initially the bedroom recording project of Dan Whitford, Cut Copy evolved into a full-fledged band with guitarist Tim Hoey, drummer Mitchell Scott, and bass player Ben Browning. The quartet’s studio albums include In Ghost Colours, which Pitchfork named as one of the best albums of 2008 and among the top albums of the 2000s, and 2011’s Zonoscope, which won two ARIAAwards and was nominated for a GRAMMY®. Their last album, 2017’sHaiku From Zero, represented the band at their most refined and efficiently emotive. Their new albumFreeze, Melt, mainly written during a Scandinavian winter during frontman Dan Whitford’s time in Denmark, reflects the time and place in which it was created, with a much more moody and evocative spin on their trademark synthesizers and melodies. Cut Copy have managed the clever hat trick of simultaneously expanding their sound while also refining it. While previous records explored peak-time hedonism, this is a soundtrack to the perfect gentle comedown. Cut Copy’s songs have been licensed for use in television, games and commercials, including FIFA 18, Chevrolet, Netflix, Amazon, and Levi’s® #LiveinLevis campaign. DJing and mixes have also been a big part of their identity–from the band’s famed Fabric mix, Fabriclive.29, to the 2014 Melbourne dance compilation, Oceans Apart. In addition to headlining massive sold-out shows, the band has gained prime slots at prestigious festivals such as Coachella, Ultra, and Lollapalooza in the U.S.; Primavera in Spain, Pitchfork in Paris; Summer Sonic in Japan; and Big Day Out in Australia.

I’ve been making music as Porches since 2009. It’s an ongoing exploration of any sounds or ideas that I find interesting in a particular moment. Ideally, as time passes, these seemingly disparate ideas will become unified in the context of the Porches catalogue. Kind of like a public diary.

My aim is to swim to the bottom of myself and find the most beautiful and strange things I can offer. Porches is my love affair with music and my love affair with the world. Music keeps me alive and I hope these songs can serve the people that listen to them as well.

My new album,  Ricky Music , was written and recorded between Dec 2017 and the spring of 2019. Mostly in New York at my apartment, but some of it in Chicago, Los Angeles, and various cities while touring around Europe. This record is an account of the beauty, confusion, anger, joy and sadness I experienced during that time. I think I was as lost as I was madly in love. In these songs I hear myself sometimes desperate for clarity, and other times, having enough perspective to laugh at myself in some of my darkest moments. That’s sort of what this album is about, I hope you enjoy it.

Phoenix PD changes overtime rules after ABC15 report reveals big payouts

porches phoenix tour

PHOENIX — After an ABC15 report revealed dozens of officers received huge overtime payouts in a single month, Phoenix police officials sent out a memo alerting the department to changes in their policy for approving extra work.

A second supervisor is now required to sign off on overtime requests, adding an extra layer to the approval process, according to the memo.

It also stated that all overtime requests must be approved within the work week.

The memo was dated on April 26, 2024.

Phoenix OT memo

That’s two weeks after ABC15 released a news report showing at least two dozen officers received overtime payments exceeding $10,000 in January. The top officer was paid more than $39,000 for 550 overtime hours.

When asked if the memo was sent in response to ABC15’s report, a spokesperson wrote: “This notification was the result of recommendations from a work group convened last September by Interim Chief Michael Sullivan who asked that the group explore and make recommendations on how to effectively manage overtime costs given the current staffing numbers.”

Phoenix police previously said that the huge overtime payout for the top officer covered “several months” worth of overtime slips and all were “deemed credible.”

Overtime is common inside the Phoenix Police Department as the city has several hundred vacant officer positions.

Through a public records request, ABC15 has requested overtime documents and information to look into how well the city is managing and tracking overtime payments.

KK'S PRIEST And ACCEPT Announce Summer/Fall 2024 North American Tour

KK'S PRIEST , which features former JUDAS PRIEST members K.K. Downing (guitar) and Tim "Ripper" Owens (vocals),alongside guitarist A.J. Mills ( HOSTILE ),bassist Tony Newton ( VOODOO SIX ) and drummer Sean Elg ( DEATHRIDERS , CAGE ),and German/American metal legends ACCEPT will join forces this fall 2024 for an unmissable North American tour. Both bands are touring in support of their brand new albums, out now via Napalm Records .

The massive run will begin on August 31 in Los Angeles, California, visiting a slew of major cities in the USA and Canada — such as Toronto, Montreal, New York and Nashville — before coming to an end in San Francisco, California on October 7. Tickets go on sale this Thursday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. EDT, so get your tickets quickly before it's too late.

Downing says: "It's time!!! Let the full European metal assault commence, KK'S PRIEST / ACCEPT . Not since 1983 have we shared the same battleground. From Germany, from the U.K., let the Flying Vs clash, let the metal fly! All in the name of defending our beloved heavy metal music, let the people come from all walks of life to witness the battle royal. There is no doubt that we warriors of metal will give every ounce of our energy and our power in order to deliver up our very finest performance. This is a spectacle not to be missed, and this is possibly the one and only time in history for you to witness this iconic duel. Who will be the victor? You will be the judge, let the music begin from early August to early October... The arena awaits!!"

ACCEPT 's Wolf Hoffmann says: "This tour with KK'S PRIEST is a dream come true for ACCEPT and for me personally.

" ACCEPT supported JUDAS PRIEST back in the early '80s — it was our first 'real' international tour and PRIEST had been a huge influence on us.

"I'm really looking forward to reconnecting with K.K. on this very special tour. It's going to be epic! Don't miss it!"

KK'S PRIEST 's first-ever U.S. headlining tour, which featured support from L.A. GUNS and BURNING WITCHES , kicked off on March 7 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and concluded on March 24 at Keswick Theatre in Glenside, Pennsylvania.

KK'S PRIEST 's sophomore album, "The Sinner Rides Again" , came out in September 2023 via the Austrian label Napalm Records .

KK'S PRIEST made its live debut on July 6, 2023 at Downing's KK's Steel Mill in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom.

K.K. formed KK'S PRIEST after JUDAS PRIEST turned down his offer to rejoin the band for their 50th-anniversary tour. It followed a couple of celebrated stage appearances, first with former MANOWAR guitarist Ross The Boss in the summer of 2019, then with a one-off lineup that included former MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson and former PRIEST drummer Les Binks later that year.

KK'S PRIEST released its debut album, "Sermons Of The Sinner" , in October 2021 via Explorer1 Music Group / EX1 Records .

Downing spent four months writing and recording "Sermons Of The Sinner" and, along with new ideas, he even resurrected a few archived riffs from the 1980s.

Downing was reunited with JUDAS PRIEST for a performance at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in November 2022 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

PRIEST received the Musical Excellence Award at the event, which honored Eminem , Dolly Parton , DURAN DURAN , Lionel Richie , Pat Benatar , EURYTHMICS and Carly Simon in the Performers category.

Downing left PRIEST in 2011 amid claims of band conflict, shoddy management and declining quality of performance. He was replaced by Richie Faulkner , nearly three decades his junior.

In 2019, Downing said that he reached out to JUDAS PRIEST about taking part in the band's 50th-anniversary tour but that their response was that they were not interested in including him in the celebrations.

In 2018, Downing revealed that he sent two resignation letters to his bandmates when he decided to quit JUDAS PRIEST . The first was described as "a graceful exit note, implying a smooth retirement from music," while the second was "angrier, laying out all of his frustrations with specific parties."

Downing later said that he believed the second letter was "a key reason" he wasn't invited to rejoin PRIEST after Glenn Tipton 's decision to retire from touring.

Owens joined PRIEST in 1996 and recorded two studio albums with the band — 1997's "Jugulator" and 2001's "Demolition" — before PRIEST reunited with Rob Halford in 2003.

ACCEPT 's latest album, "Humanoid" , was released on April 26 via Napalm Records . The LP was once again produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by critically acclaimed heavy metal producer Andy Sneap .

ACCEPT recently announced a massive European headline tour, with more than 20 shows across the continent for autumn 2024. This summer, ACCEPT will also return to some of the world’s most important rock and metal festivals, like Wacken Open Air , Hellfest and more, following their South American spring tour.

In the fall of 2022, ACCEPT completed a North American tour with support from NARCOTIC WASTELAND . The band played a career-spanning set of new and classic tracks, including mega-hits "Balls To The Wall" , "Princess Of The Dawn" , "Fast As A Shark" and many more.

In February 2022, it was announced that ACCEPT had inked a worldwide deal with Napalm Records .

ACCEPT 's previous album, "Too Mean To Die" , came out in January 2021 via Nuclear Blast . The LP was the group's first without bassist Peter Baltes , who exited ACCEPT in November 2018. He has since been replaced by Martin Motnik . ACCEPT 's lineup has also been expanded with the addition of a third guitarist, the aforementioned Philip Shouse , who originally filled in for Uwe Lulis during 2019's "Symphonic Terror" tour, before being asked to join the band permanently.

Mark Tornillo joined ACCEPT in 2009 as the replacement for the band's original lead singer, Udo Dirkscheider . He can be heard on ACCEPT 's last six studio albums, "Blood Of The Nations" (2010), "Stalingrad" (2012), "Blind Rage" (2014), "The Rise Of Chaos" (2017),2021's "Too Mean To Die" and 2024's "Humanoid" .

What to know about Billie Eilish resale tickets

The goal is to give fans, not scalpers, the best chance to buy tickets at face value. To make this possible, Eilish has chosen to use Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange. To help protect the Exchange, the tour has requested all tickets be mobile only and restricted from transfer. Concert review: A Billie Eilish concert feels like witnessing a new pop legend in the making. Here's why

Is 'Hit Me Hard and Soft' sustainable?

The album will be available on all digital platforms and — in a continued effort to minimize waste and combat climate change — across all physical formats in limited variants on the same day, with the same track listing and using 100% recyclable materials. For more information on all sustainable practices for this album release, visit store.billieeilish.com/pages/sustainability .

What to know about Billie Eilish's tour sustainability efforts

Eilish will continue her long-standing partnership with environmental nonprofit Reverb on this tour, building on the success of previous efforts, which resulted in more than $1 million donated to environmental, greenhouse gas reduction, and climate justice projects, more than 150,000 fan actions and more. Sustainability efforts on this tour will include reducing greenhouse gas pollution, decreasing single-use plastic waste, supporting climate action and updating concession offerings to promote and encourage plant-based food options with Support+Feed.

In keeping with her commitment to making a difference in the environmental impact of her music and touring, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales in North America will go to Reverb and its ongoing effort to help support organizations across the country addressing the impacts of food insecurity and the climate crisis.

The Billie Eilish Reverb Eco-Villages will be set up at two locations in the main concourse of each show, where fans can take part in the tour’s sustainability efforts, connect with nonprofits and take meaningful action for people and the planet.

What to know about Support+Feed

Support+Feed will be launching a 360 campaign throughout the tour, offering an expanded version of the Support+Feed Pledge inspiring fans to eat one plant-based meal a day for 30 days with digital elements and community activations. Fans can also participate in plant-based food drives in select cities to raise awareness and gather food to distribute to local communities.

Why Billie Eilish wants fans to take public transportation

Fans are encouraged to join the effort to make the “Hit Me Hard and Soft” tour more sustainable by taking public transportation, where possible, and carpooling to and from the shows to help reduce greenhouse gas pollution. Fans will receive information via email about public transportation options before the show.

Venue partners are also helping to lessen the environmental footprint of the tour. In addition to efforts to decrease waste through reducing or eliminating single-use plastics and diverting landfill waste with compost and recycling, venues will be offering plant-based food options at all shows.

What to know about RockNRefill bottles

Fans are encouraged to bring an empty reusable water bottle or donate for a custom RockNRefill Nalgene bottle to fill up at the free water refill stations located at each venue. The RockNRefill bottles and refill stations are located at the Eco-Villages in the main concourse at all shows.

What to wear to Billie Eilish's concert

Fans are also encouraged to fight fast fashion by opting for thrifted, upcycled or borrowed clothes instead of buying new clothing to wear to shows.
