An important Jain pilgrimage is also a major attraction for others too. Shravanabelagola is home to the world’s tallest monolithic statue of Lord Gometeshwara. Constructed in 981 AD by a Ganga warrior, Chamundaraya, the statue is carved out of a single block of granite and is visible up to 30 km away. Nearly 700 steps take you up to the Vindhyagiri hills where the statue of Lord Gomesteshwara is located and is surrounded by a temple complex. To worship or see the lord, you will have to climb the steps. At the bottom of the temple, there are several tiny shops selling knick-knacks and puja items. Bang opposite Vindhyagiri lies another hill called Chandragiri. On the top of the Chandragiri, there is a cluster of 14 Jain Temples. To visit both the shrines /hills half a day is recommended. One of the major attractions of Shravanabelagola is the Mahamastakabhisheka. An event which is planned every 12 years is one of the biggest festivals in the world. The two ancient and historic temples represent the brilliant and astonishing craftsmanship of Hoysala Architecture. Dedicated to lord Vishnu, the splendid Chennakeshava Temple is believed to have been built in the 11th century. The temple was built by King Vishnuvardhana and the Hoysalas to commemorate the victory of the Hoysalas over the Cholas in the Talakadu battle. The intricate carvings both inside and outside the temple make it worth visiting. The stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata are depicted in the form of stone carvings of women dancing, playing instruments, animals, and birds, and from nature. You can easily spend 2-3 hours at the temple.

bangalore to belur halebid shravanabelagola trip

Just 17 km away from Belur lays the famous Halebeedu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This is one of the largest Shiva temples built by Hoysalas. Halebeedu, in Kannada means ‘old house /old ruins,’ mesmerizes the visitors, travelers, and pilgrims leaving them awestruck with its exquisite carvings and craftsmanship. The temple’s base consists of 7 rows carved with elephants, lions, horses, and floral scrolls. The inner and exterior walls of the temple are adorned with intricately carved Hindu deities, sages, birds and animals, and much more depicting stories from Bhagwat Gita, Ramayana, and Mahabharata. Halebeedu also houses multiple temples for Hindus and Jains from ancient times. Not to miss an archaeology museum within the Halebeedu complex that houses over 1500 sculptures and artifacts of the Hoysala era. The museum is maintained by ASI.

Hassan has several stay options ranging from budget to high-end heritage properties. Choose to stay in Hassan for better accessibility to other places of interest. To have leisure time in both temples you will need at least 6-7 hours. You can either visit Shettihalli Church on day 2 or relax in a hotel and enjoy the evening in a resort or a hotel.

Hassan more precisely is famous for the twin temples Belur – Halebeedu. However one cannot take away the limelight of the famous and unusual submerged Shettihalli Church.

Shettihalli Church

bangalore to belur halebid shravanabelagola trip

One of the hidden gems of unexplored Karnataka is the Shettihalli Church. Rosary Church was built about 160 years ago by Europeans along with the banks of River Hemavathi in Shettihalli Village. Later on, the government built a dam to control flooding. The Church becomes the attraction during and post-monsoon when it submerges into the river giving the illusion of a floating church. The ruins of the Church also tell a lot of haunted stories by the local people. The marvelous architecture of the ruins depicts how grand the church may have been. The tall columns, French doors, and windows make it an iconic monument and must to visit when in Hassan. There is no direct access to the church, ask the locals for directions. There is a walk of 10 minutes from the main road to reach the church via a dirt track or mud road. It is a breathtaking sight to see the magnificent Shettihalli church either submerged or otherwise. After spending some one hour at the church you can proceed towards Bangalore.

How to reach

Belur – Halebeedu can be reached by road from its district headquarters Hassan. Hassan is well connected by road and railways. Belur is just 24 km from Hassan.

The nearest airport is Mangalore, 175 km, and Bangalore is around 220 km.

Hassan, the district headquarters railway station is well connected with all the major towns in Karnataka.

bangalore to belur halebid shravanabelagola trip

Belur After Doddagadduvalli, We reached Belur for lunch and we stayed in Kstdc Hotel Mayura Velapuri. They have a good restaurant too. I was a little apprehensive but was pleasantly surprised. The rooms were basic but the place was clean with new sheets and clean rooms. There are not much of hotels in Belur. There are more options in Hassan and lot of people stay at Hassan. We chose Belur to avoid the travel time so we can spend more time at the temple. Some people also stay at Chikmagalur as there are a lot of good resorts there. Its very nearby (about half an hours drive) and the facilities are really good.

Belur Chennakeshava Temple Timings: 7:30am to 7:30pm (Many sites mention the closing time as 5:30pm but I enquired in the temple itself and was there in the temple till 7:00pm) (2-3 hours needed for seeing the temple) Note: Carry a pair of cotton socks to these temples and wear them when you enter the temple. The stone flooring gets hot during the day and socks can keep your feet cool.

Belur Temple

Halebid / Halebeedu Hoysaleswara temple Temple timings: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Friday timings vary slightly due to poojas) (2 – 3 hours needed for seeing the temple) After a long blissful evening, we stayed in Belur for the night. Next day, after breakfast at the hotel, we headed to Halebid / Halebeedu which takes about 30 minutes to reach from Belur. Halebeedu was the old capital of the Hoysalas. The temple is in ruins as it was attacked and destroyed by the muslim invaders in 14th century. Most of the outer walls has been ransacked and some of the idols stolen.

Here is our itinerary. Day 1 – Bangalore – Shravanabelagola – Doddagadduvalli Lakshmi Temple – Belur Chanakeshava Temple Day 2 – Belur – Halebeedu Hoysaleshwar Temple – Kedareshwar temple – Jain temple Basadi – Temple Tank – Belavadi Veeranarayanaswamy Temple – Chikmagalur (All the temples are very nearby) Day 3 – Chikmagalur (We went to Mullyangiri Peak. We settled and rested for the day at the hotel afterwards) Day 4 – Chikmagalur – Bangalore

Hope you enjoyed my travel diary. Until next time, Kannamma.

Very nice blog keep it up.

' data-src=

I came across your blog as I was researching for our trip to Belur and Halebeedu. I found your blog really useful. I can say we just literally followed your blog to cover all the important sites in Belur and Halebeedu.

Just a few suggestions to edit a few items so others can benefit as well.

a. There is typo in the name of the temple in Belur. Please change it to Chennakeshava Temple. b. The Belavadi Veera Narayana Temple timings are between 8.30 am 2 pm, 4-7 pm. We reached here around 2 pm just in time to catch the glimpse of the deities. The idols are magnificient here and you don’t want to miss their Darshan. c. Halebeedu Temple complex is open from 6.30 AM till 9 PM.

Regards, Giri

Awesome information and very detailed summary of the places. Really appreciate your efforts Akka. But please bear in mind that many kitchens are dependent on Kannamacooks for weekends and boring days. So please don’t shift to travel blogging full time leaving many of us helpless😀 Thanks for your knowledge sharing

haha. that was funny.

Traveler Reviews

We 2 friends had booked a private car that took us directly to Shravanbangola from Banguluru airport. One has to climb up 600 steps to reach the 57 feet monolith statue of Lord Bahubali. After seeing this marvelous place, we proceeded to Hassan and stayed the night there. The next day morning, we left Hassan and proceeded to see the beautiful temples of Belur and Halebid.....would recommend keeping a guide at both these places to understand the history and architecture of the temple. After the temple visits, we proceeded to Chikmagalur, which is a hill station as we had planned to stay the night at Chikmagalur. At Chikmagalur, we visited Mullayangiri peak ( tallest park of Karnataka) and Dabdabe falls (also known as buttermilk falls). Next day morning, we left Chikmagalur to reach Banguluru. Found all the 4 places worth visiting.

Took a day trip to Belur and Halebid. Started around 7:00 am from vijay nagar Bangalore. Halted in Swati's for breakfast .. It was delicious.. Then visited the old temples and big Nandi's of the temple.. Did not hire any guide as we had wifi to search the history Had lunch at Krishna's in Halebid and last stop was Shravana Belagola.. It requires climbing.. The only thing I would do different is to go first to the Shravana Belagola first thing in the morning as it is hard to climb after lunch.

Drove down from bangalore. Most beautiful drive esp after hassan. Landscape felt like the south of france.. But not quite. It was like the warmth that you can feel in your own multicultural diverse country. 523 km round trip from bangalore, over 10 hours of total time for the trip and we still felt fresh on the return.

We've made this private tour in three this July and enjoyed it a lot. Driver arrived to out hotel almost an hour advance of the departure time. Car was clean and comfortable, AC was working. We've visited three planed temples, two of them with a guide. During the whole trip driver was finding a good places to make a stops for bathroom and lunch. The only thing we didn't quite enjoy - the real trip duration was 15h instead of 10h planned. Stops and dinner might took us together additional 2h top, but would be good to understand in advance amount of time trip might take. Highly recommend this tour if you're interested in exploring India.

This is my 2nd time to visit Belur, Halebid and 1st time for Shravanabelagola. I don't remember much from my first visit to Belur and Halebid. Everything was blur... due to language. This time I have a private guide to explain the history and characteristics of the temples, carvings, cultures. I truly enjoyed the trip.
