Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

boats sit on blue waters in harbour with city in background

10 of the best hotels in Mumbai, from Indian opulence to Soho House socials

Bollywood centre, commercial capital and all-round good-time city, Mumbai has charisma by the bucketload. New hotels are appearing apace, while older ones are constantly upping their game.

Such is Mumbai's geography, stretching for more than 25 miles down India’s west coast, that it’s crucial to choose your area carefully. Colaba, on the southern tip, is a popular spot, with abundant sightseeing and restaurants. Further north, Bandra is packed with cool bars, while Juhu’s selling point is its three-mile stretch of golden sand. Hotels on the beach often come with rooftop pools, ideal for watching the sun set over the Arabian Sea. Here are 10 of the best.

1. Abode Bombay

Best for: boho brilliance   One of the city’s few boutique hotels, Abode Bombay has oodles of bohemian charm. Every corner of this heritage property in downtown Colaba has been curated with flair, from art deco floor tiles and restored vintage furniture to evocative photography capturing local life. Abode takes its social responsibilities seriously, too. The hotel has close ties with Victoria Memorial School for the Blind, and all therapists at the small spa are visually impaired, while car services are provided solely by vulnerable women — often single mothers — for whom driving offers financial freedom. Such has been Abode Bombay’s success that brother-and-sister owners Abedin Sham and Jumana Lokhandwala recently bought another floor of the building, opening four brand-new suites this spring — all with just as much soul as the rest of the property. Rooms: From INR 8,500 (£82), B & B.

2. The Oberoi

Best for: all-out luxury   Step into The Oberoi’s marble-clad lobby and prepare to be momentarily stunned. The atrium rises for 21 floors, the ceiling seemingly stretching into infinity, while the soft smell of lilies fills the air and the smooth tones of a jazz pianist seem to guide you straight to one of the two bars. For some of the best views in the city, opt for Eau Bar’s terrace, overlooking the Arabian Sea, and order the signature cocktail, marine drive. Made with turmeric gin and orange bitters, it’s the deep-red hue of an Indian sunset. After drinks, you may want to explore more of Nariman Point — but in a place as beautiful as The Oberoi, you also may not. In the hotel’s 287 rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, vast bathtubs and plump pillows combine to make the ideal night in. Rooms: From INR 13,950 (£135), B & B.

3. The Taj Mahal Palace

Best for: opulence   No list of Mumbai’s best hotels would be complete without The Taj Mahal Palace. Opened in 1903, this resplendent building has lost none of its cachet, combining baroque architecture with regal interiors and views over the century-old Gateway of India monument. The lobby welcomes a glittering parade of well-to-do travellers, as do the four restaurants. The high tea, served in the Sea Lounge, is sublime; the pool is sun-drenched and surrounded by tropical foliage; and the rooms are decked out in dark wood, heavy drapes and four-poster beds. Don’t miss the heritage tours for guests, during which staff will tell tales of the hotel’s history and explain the poignant memorial marking the 2008 terrorist attack. Rooms: From INR 28,000 (£272), B & B.

outdoor seating at hotel restaurant

4. The Westin Mumbai Powai Lake

Best for: lakeside serenity   Set on the serene shores of Powai Lake, this Marriott Bonvoy hotel, opened in 2022, feels worlds away from the city’s hectic heart, 14 miles to the south. Sit down to an elaborate breakfast buffet beside its still waters and watch spot-billed ducks paddle past, before moving poolside to soak up a bit of sun. Inside, the pared-back decor includes sandy-coloured walls and Scandinavian-style furnishings. Make sure to visit the adjacent Sanjay Gandhi National Park, situated within the boundaries of Mumbai. The Kanheri caves here, carved by Buddhist monks more than 2,000 years ago, are mesmerising, as is the wildlife: the area has the highest documented density of leopards in the world, as well as monkeys galore, from macaques to langurs. Rooms: INR 12,980 (£126), B & B.

5. The Leela

Best for: a green oasis Surrounded by 11 acres of gardens, yet within easy reach of the international airport, this glamorous hotel is great for those making a quick stop in Mumbai and who want to avoid the guaranteed traffic into the city centre. The hotel’s dining options are excellent: alongside the six restaurants, guests can book a bespoke tasting menu with wine pairings, or a traditional Indian cookery class with the head chef. The spa is a standout feature, complete with a small hammam and a hair salon for a post-soak blow dry. Rooms: INR 22,000 (£213), B & B.

6. Ferreira House

Best for: individual charm More museum than hotel, this homestay gives a fascinating glimpse into local history. Curios fill every nook: think crystalware, family photographs, ancient maps and mysterious teak chests. Owner James Ferreira is just as fantastic as his furnishings. A fashion designer and lover of all things Mumbai, he grew up here and is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to sightseeing. Pick his brains over a G & T before heading out onto the cobbled streets of Khotachiwadi, one of the oldest parts of the city. Rooms: From £130, B & B. T: 00 91 98200 46273

7. Soho House

Best for: socialites   The bar is in full swing every evening at Mumbai’s Soho House. Here in Juhu, a Bollywood stronghold, the crowds tend to be beautiful, famous and up for fun. Join them for dinner at Cecconi’s, overlooking Juhu Beach, before going upstairs and to the roof terrace for live music, potent cocktails and people-watching. Rooms feature dark wood floors, vintage decor and eclectic artwork. The rooftop pool, meanwhile, is tastefully tiled in Rajasthani florals. Rooms: INR 26,500 (£257), room only. If you’re not a Soho House member, a 12-month membership will be added to your booking for INR 10,000 (£97).

guests lounging by poolside

8. Bloom Hotel Worli

Best for: bargain-hunters   Lemon-yellow, reasonably priced and ultra-modern — these are the trademarks of the Bloom brand. For a prime central location, the Bloom Hotel Worli is a bargain. Its compact rooms are equipped with crisp linens, rain showers and high-speed wi-fi (still a rarity in much of Mumbai). There’s also a good restaurant with international dishes. The Worli district is home to some of the city’s top attractions, including Haji Ali Dargah Mosque and the Nehru Science Centre.Rooms: From INR 6,664 (£65), room only.

9. Le Sutra

Best for: art-lovers   In 2009, more than 150 local artists teamed up to create India’s first art hotel. Every one of Le Sutra’s 16 rooms has been curated according to Indian mythology. The first floor symbolises Sattva, a sense of peace and harmony. Tones are muted, all cool whites and earthen browns, with beautifully carved sculptures and minimalist artwork. The second floor, meanwhile, depicts Rajas, the quality of ambition and action, with deep reds and golds. The terraced restaurant, Out of the Blue, is relaxed and reasonably priced. Head there at happy hour for its two-for-one beers, with Indo-Chinese sides of sesame chicken, honeyed prawns and lemongrass chicken skewers — great if you’re craving a break from traditional Indian cuisine. Rooms: INR 9,939 (£96), B & B.

10. Hyatt Centric Juhu Mumbai

Best for: poolside views This slick new Hyatt branch opened in 2022 with a bachelor-pad aesthetic that includes red walls, black marble and dim lighting. Close to Juhu Beach in northwest Mumbai, rooms are well appointed and stylish, while staff cut the perfect line between attentive and discreet. The hotel’s Sesame restaurant covers all bases from tandoor chicken to sushi. The star of the show is undoubtedly the roof terrace: look one way from the pool and its canopied day beds, and the cityscape sprawls as far as the eye can see; in the other direction, views stretch across Juhu Beach. Head up early in the morning to witness a dazzling display of dragon flies, as hundreds flap lazily above the palm trees. Rooms: From INR 30,000 (£290), room only.

I checked agoda and was looking for a hotel last moment as my bus was cancelled. I found this hotel and from the photos it looked good. Agoda gave me instant confirmation. On reaching the hotel, the reception was quite standard but on entering the area restricted to residents - it was an out of the world experience. the architecture is wonderful. it is so peaceful inside, you will never believe you are in mumbai. instantaneously, tiredness left and i decided on having a meal, visiting the spa, etc. A must stay for a different experience of a mumbai hotel

Located on Juhu facing the sea, the Sea Princess hotel remains true to its name. With extremely caring staff members making sure at every moment that your stay is comfortable, the hotel deserves to be recommended for every solo (mainly) traveler or any couple, who would like to enjoy some intimate moments together. The beach/pool side cafe is an added attraction, wherein you can relax, sit back and enjoy the sea whilst sipping into your favorite cocktail/mocktail. Coming to the rooms, the cleanliness was spot on, with an overtly comfortable bed facing the sea. The amenities provided in the room were at par with any international standards. My only point of criticism will always remain for the restaurant menu. The hotel has just a single restaurant serving extremely delicious multi-cuisine dishes, however my choices in selecting a dish was limited. Being in India, more importantly, Mumbai, a hub for foodies, I expected a lot better option when it came to the food, but was disappointed.

the hotel is huge, a nice pool though the weather was a bit cold and not pool appropriate, the breakfast was ok, we tried of the restaurants in the hotel and both pretty good, the upstairs mexican place a nice place to have beer and the indian restaurant good. location wise: just a note that though it seems that it's very far from the real mumbai and there is no little shops or little restaurants around and just other hotels, you need to walk the nehru street pass the crossroads and you are in the middle of crazy mumbai!!! so no worries about that. as it's north mumbai, there are auto rickshaws right there and that's good too.

The Leela is my preferred transit hotel in Mumbai. It is located a mere 5 mins drive from the international airport. The rooms are smartly designed with spacious bathrooms and other amenities. The Indian touches are everywhere and this distinguishes Leela from the other hotels in the same class. The restaurants are excellent. I always look forward to the breakfast at Citrus, especially the South Indian preparations such as idli-sambar and masala dosa. The staff is earnest and performance has improved in recent times. If you have business to conduct anywhere close to the international airport, this is the hotel to be in. Or if you have an international flight to catch at one of those ungodly hours, stay at Leela makes it comfortable and convenient.

Perfect for business trip. We are not really that fan of Indian cuisine but the breakfast was superb, lots of choices. Location wise, the best in Mumbai. Near the airport, lots of stores nearby, supermarkets, coffee shops. The staffs are very professionals and approachable. Well maintained hotel and we'll probably book here again on our next visit.

Also connected to own shopping mall.Good health club-swimming pool, salon -has everything in the hotel itself A MUST Stay in Mumbai and easily among top 5 bets hotels in Mumbai

I arrived at Mumbai airport on 15 May morning and was waiting for the airport pickup. 10 minutes later and still no hotel rep, thought there might have been a mixup and called Kohinoor Continental Hotel. Was attended to by Ms Suprriya who confirmed my reservation, but turned out I booked for 15-17 July instead! Looked at my voucher and realised my blunder, and told her about my error and I was already in Mumbai airport. Ms Suprriya asked me to give her 2 minutes. 2 minutes later, she called my Singapore number and said that a driver will arrive in 10-15 minutes time. Driver arrived punctually and fetched me to the hotel. Hotel is conveniently located close to the airport. Situated along main road, she blended in with the ongoing construction works nearby. Nevertheless, once inside, it's decent and presentable. Check-in counter was briefed by Ms Suprriya and was willing to honour the booking for 15-17 May, but requested that I contact Agoda about the change in dates with new voucher. Called Agoda Singapore who obliged after getting consensus from hotel rep (thanks Agoda, in particular Jason). Hotel rep said to simply forward revised voucher to reservations. Check-in was thus successful, and many thanks to Hotel Kohinoor Continental, in particular Ms Suprriya for making this pleasant. Had a Superior Room which was very clean with pleasant smell. Wooden flooring gave that "homely" feeling. I would say this is similar to most superior rooms in 3–4 star hotels across Asia, neither big nor small, but just sufficient for a business traveller who needs proper work desk, reliable wifi, comfortable and clean bed, functioning bathroom (in this case shower only). Being a breakfast person, I'd consider the buffet spread standard and reasonable, catering to western and Indian palate. You may have to be a bit patient with the wait staffs as they are courteous, but at times forgetful and slow. All in all, it's been a pleasant stay and I'll be returning on my next visit to Mumbai

The hotel had its own compound separated by quiet boundaries. The reception desk was aristocratic and fine. The day brought the first sunbeams through the privately open window and after the sundown myriad stars were gyrating in the darkness over the pulsating ocean. I was gradually giving myself up in a tranquility that was far away from the dynamic Mumbai. It was reflective of the core of India : unending and independent. I was amid an eternal civilization. I was being beckoned to it the night I was leaving the hotel premises.

I had stayed for a considerable time along with a friend of mine at the Ambassador, Mumbai. The 4 star rated property is a part of the chain of heritage hotels, managed by the Narang group. It is conveniently located within a walking distance from the surreal & beautiful 'Queen's Necklace' i.e., the Marine drive near the Churchgate junction. The hotel has a magnificent and old English type lobby with beautiful chandeliers adorning the walls. Valet parking is available. Greeted with warm smiles, the whole check-in was handled with ease by the staff. We were booked on a room on the eight floor with a partial view of the sea, on request. The room was spacious, clean with a mix of modern and old fittings. A simple English type wardrobe with a locker, lcd television with a huge list of cable channels, plug points adaptable to international needs and a spacious bathroom with a tub are standard for the room, which is a deluxe category one. Strangely the mini bar is missing as we were told that the hotel doesn't have a license to serve alchol in the room. During our stay, we were pleasantly pleased with the house keeping services provided. The staff adhered to our each and every needs with a smile. Same goes for the in-room dining. The menu is limited though, with Indian and continental cuisine on offer. There are two restaurants located on the ground floor. Flavors is the buffet serving restaurant and Society is their a la carte restaurant. Breakfast buffet spread is very good serving Indian & continental fare. The one issue I had was with the sambar gravy which was on the sweeter side, but it is subjective as some do prefer the sambar that way. All items are prepared with less oil and there are options for those who prefer fruits & cereals for breakfast. The quality of food served is excellent, especially the tandoor appetizers. I had one of the best & succulent mutton seekh kababs and tandoori prawns over here. Equally admirable are their grilled chicken served with mash

The name Niranta Airport Transit hotel - inside Intl airport suggests that it is easy to access as a transit passenger. However, Jet Airways staff in both London and Mumbai Transit told me that I would have to have a visa to access the hotel. I was unable to access the hotel because it would appear that people I spoke to did not realise that the hotel was accessible from Transit without a visa. This should be easy for you to rectify. I hope that you will consider what I have told you and for future custom address this issue. I would like to stay with you next time I transit through Mumbai but I would like by email the process and protocol for this to happen. Please ensure that my booking fee is refunded as promised by your staff supervisor who I spoke to after getting through immigration and into the transit lounge. I had to pay extra for the privilege of using an airport lounge for sleep and rest, after paying for the Niranta hotel.I would have preferred to stay with Niranta having booked it.

The Sea Palace is in a very good location in the Colaba district of Mumbai. Warning it is a very long cab ride from airport. The hotel is older with a slow elevator but the staff is wonderful and the hotel is safe and clean. Mumbai hotels are some of the most expensive in India so for the area this is a good deal. I would stay again.

This was our first time in Mumbai, hotel was in a good location, staff was very nice and the place felt very clean. The bathroom could improve a bit, but all in all was very clean and we always had warm water. One thing that could've been improved was the fact that we arrived at the hotel 05:00 AM but we still had to pay for a full night and not for half of it. I will say they were completely upfront about it, they told us in advance that we would pay for half a night only from 06:00AM, but since we got a bit earlier than expected from the airport, I thought they could be a bit more flexible. Other than that, would recommend the place :)

I booked this room for my parents and sister who were travelling to mumbai for a day. they had an early morning flight to istanbul the next day and had to be close to the airport. their first experience of the city was quite terrible as with all foreigners coming to mumbai for the first time. they were supposed to have airport transfer from the hotel but somehow they cld not see it. they were approached by/ surrounded by lots of people who 'wanted to help'. in the end, they had to pay for a huge taxi fare, etc etc.. however, when they reached the hotel (at 7am in the morn), they were given a room within one hour (even if they were very early for check-in), they were allowed to have breakfast (normally bfast is for the next morning but as they were leaving early the next morn, the hotel allowed them to have bfast the morning they came in). they absolutely loved their room for its size, comfort, etc. they even dined at the hotel and they found the food very good, the service perfect and the bill quite cheap. they say that the hotel has completely changed their earlier impression of mumbai. they cld not use the swimming pool but hope do so maybe at the next stay. they also used a hotel car for a city tour and the driver took them to a lot of interesting places. and upon check-out, they were dropped by the hotel at the airport hassle-free. i wld say thank you Vits!!!

This is a very nice place to stay in Mumbai. The first time in Mumbai and staff at the emerald her super friendly and quick to check us in. The breakfast service is very good, limited selection but essentials were there! We traveled with a family of 7 Inc two children all which were absolutely happy with the hotel. The location is only 5mins walk to Juhu beach which was our prime reason to book this. I would definitely come back again.

Overall it was pleasant 3 nites stay at Krishna Palace. We arrived quite late at night and our booked room wasn't ready when we checked in. But the frontdesk provided a much better suite for the nites stay and we are thankful for their arrangement. Sometimes it's quite noisy from adjacent rooms at night. And on our last day we totally lost our sleep in the morning due construction/renovation work of the room just opposite to us. We wouldn't have complained if frontdesk had informed us beforehand. The most important thing that this hotel lacks is free wifi and it was a bad experience buying their wifi packages. Nonetheless we thank all hotel staff for their assistance and service. If I get another chance to visit Mumbai, I wouldn't hesitate staying at this hotel again.

The location of this hotel is excellent and close to everything including shopping, restaurants, bars, pubs and anything you can think of is very nearby. The breakfast of the hotel is very good with a different choice of south and North Indian cuisine everyday. Very friendly staff and also very helpful. The rooms are very comfortable and cozy with the air conditioning working very well in the very hot weather of Mumbai. A special mention about Fahad the front office manager who was always helpful and made our stay very comfortable. The only downside is the room service serving very good food but takes atleast 45 minutes or more. All in all a very comfortable and satisfying stay. Will always stay here during our visits to mumbai

When selecting a hotel in Mumbai, we noticed the prices were higher. For us, this was the perfect balance of a less expensive hotel that still provided a good location and really clean, comfortable rooms. The staff was very friendly. We did not care for the blue-lit outdoor restaurant, but the breakfast buffet was quite delicious. We had some problems with the plumbing in our bathroom, but the staff was happy to deal with it. They also provided chocolates every evening to our room. There is also a good and affordable spa right next door.

We stayed in the Hilton Mumbai on the last night of a two week holiday in Southern India. The hotel is easily the best 'airport' hotel we have ever stayed in, and we've visited a few! The location is spot on for Mumbai Intl airport (minutes away), the hotel itself is classy and charming, with a real personality; unlike the 'typical' Hilton run of hotels that all look alike (while still being good of course). The staff could not do enough for us, service was exemplary. Great pool and a top class gym. While not cheap, certainly worth it.

We had such a wonderful stay, all the staff were very helpful with any requests & recommendations of places to visit, eat & local markets. The rooms were very clean & tidy, extremely comfortable beds, great free wifi & views overlooking the neighbourhood. The hotel restaurant was fabulous, range of delicious food & drinks. They made our first visit to Mumbai absolutely memorable and if I get the chance to go back I would definitely be staying here again. Highly recommend this hotel. Thank you again to everyone at T24 Residency for making our stay so wonderful!!

I arrived at Westin Mumbai Garden City Hotel on Thursday evening after a 5-hours flight and "friendly" welcome from the tout and cab driver. It was late evening and tiring, but the service excellence by the receptionist Ms. Supriya Rane and Ms. Geeta (I don't remember her surname, sorry) who helped me to get a non smoking floor on high floor and settled the discrepancy in breakfast buffet inclusion in my booking; I was very relieved and the memory of earlier "friendly" welcome was erased immediately. Room was really spacious, clean and good view of Goregaon area. Bathroom has 3 sections, bathtub, toilet and shower. Very comfy because it is near to Bombay Exhibition Center & The Hub Mall as well as Oberoi Mall which located just across the mall. It is also the nearest 5 star hotel to the airport, so very convenient to very late and very early traveler. Food at Seasonal Taste and Kangan were excellent. Thank you for Mr. Ankit (Again I forget his surname) who did a very good job during my 2 days having breakfast at Seasonal Taste. Also for the concierge team for arranging Meru Cab for my Friday evening short trip. The location is also a drawback for traveler. It is not that near to main tourist attractions, but for my current trip it serves my purpose very well. Thank you Westin Mumbai Garden City Team for a well and pleasant stay. Stayed October 2013, traveled on business

Facilities are nice, but the staff is more corporate, not really a youth hostel.. So if you're looking for a more traditional youth hostel with people hanging out outside partying then this isn't your spot. The crowd was mostly dudes who were just stopping over then catching a flight at BOM, and people who live/work in Mumbai. But, if all you want is a bed and a shower you can't go wrong here.

As a solo female traveler, the time I arrived in Windsor Hotel I thought it was a huge mistake. The building is old and might need a good hand, and being my first time in India, I was very concerned about the looks of the street where it was located. But let me tell you, after a couple nights staying I couldn't have asked for a better place. Personal is super kind, and they really take care of their travelers (especially women), location couldn't be better (10 minutes walking from Victoria Terminal), and even at night there is people on the street, there are several business there, which makes it a safe zone. Breakfast (included) was good (had omelette, toast and a great chai), shower was in my 5 bed bedroom, and there were continental restrooms to share. Beds were not exactly soft, but considering I just stayed there for a good night's sleep every night, it was good for a pricey city like Mumbai. You get what you pay for, and as an extra get the helpful and nice people working there.

I looked the hotel up online and had no trouble checking in. Once there I realised that internet access was quite shaky with relatively poor network strength in the 1st floor. Hot water was provided upon request. The room I stayed in was clean and didn't have any noteworthy quirks but a few acquaintances I made there who stayed in the rooms next to mine had poorly ventilated rooms and one had a prominent musty smell. Overall, this is an acceptable place to stay in if you speak any of the local languages but would be a lot inconvenient for tourists as the housekeeping staff don't speak English much.

i was a little worried about mumbai. it's one of the biggest cities in india and it is the most expensive. luckily we found the traveller's inn. the traveller's inn is located in the fort area on a really nice and very quiet street(which is remarkable for mumbai) but you'll still be within walking distance to nearly everything you'll want to see. the staff is incredibly helpful and polite. no matter what we needed or when we needed it, we were accomodated in a way that surpassed our expectations. oh, and the food was exceptional. the rooms are spotless, the showers are clean and hot, lots of tv channels, fast wireless internet, couldn't have asked for anything more(especially for the price). they booked us train tickets at the last minute. even though the train we needed was incredibly overbooked, they still got us tickets at a very reasonable price. i don't know how they did it but it was a life saver. they even made us food to take on the train with us. this is the best hotel i stayed at in india by far. i'm not over exaggerating in any way when i say that mohit and his family(who own the hotel) were the reason i will always remember mumbai as one of my favorite places in india. thank you!

Since I had a third person staying with a roll-in cot, they upgraded me to the deluxe room which was a very good quality room for India! The room was clean and has about everything in it you would expect from a Western hotel (I am from the US). Location is great, only about 15-20 minutes from the international hotel, which is close for Mumbai! The dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant was delicious. Good experience - you get the quality you pay for.

I would say this is the best hotel to stay if you are in Thane. It's confortable, the location is very good, the restaurant is great and the best is the staff: helpful, kind and friendly. Many thanks to everyone including the reception, housekeeping, restaurant staff and managers.

I stayed Mumbai for a business trip.Hotel was clean and comfortable while outside street seems to be so rough. Hotel in Mumbai is normally expensive but poor facilities but here was more than the ordinal standard.

I was only in Mumbai for one night and the staff arranged for a driver (Suleman) who took me all over the city that night then came back the next morning to show me many of the other sights. The room was big and the bed comfortable. Compared to the rest of India Mumbai is expensive, but the hotel is nice, staff are great and it's a good location. Easy to get to the airport ( took about 40 mins ). Breakfast was pretty good and they have a bakery/deli.

I am a regular traveller to Mumbai and do not have a high opinion on its 3 star properties which lack customer-friendliness and are overpriced. Hotel Suba International was a refreshing surprise. Everything was done with clockwork precision be it the pickup, check-in, breakfast, room service and even drop-off at airport at unearthly hours. I found it exactly what a business hotel ought to be - No frills, Efficient and a staff willing to go out of its way to serve customers. I would like to mention here that the hotel packed me a sumptuous breakfast at 5AM since I had a 7AM flight to catch. The room-service confirmed the items i would like to have packed the previous night. The hotel taxi was ready at 5AM to drop me to the airport without as much as a reminder from me. This hotel is surely an oasis in the vast desert that Mumbai is.

The Sahil Hotel is probably one of the best hotels that I have stayed in all of India. Situated at the Mumbai Central and surrounded by the Muslim majority area, this hotel is at a prime location. There are many shops around and the also a restaurant names Arabia near it which serves delicious meal from very early morning to late night. The Sahil Hotel staffs are very courteous and gentle and they provide very good services. We only stayed for a single night there and I am amazed by their courtesy which is very rare in India. It is also one of the very few hotels in India whose rooms looked like that were in the Agoda. Most often you will see a completely different hotel in India than the one that were in the pictures and book one from Agoda or other sites.

My family and I were only staying the one night before travelling to Pune. Our rooms were very clean and the breakfast was delicious. The staff were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to help us with our enquiries. It was a little out of the way of Mumbai central but that was mostly my fault for not checking more carefully. Apart from that we were very pleased.

This is my first stay in this hotel and I'm very impressive for hotel arrangement. The counter service is very handful and all staff is very well trained and give the good service during my stay. Food is very good and hotel provides the complimentary drinks which is very lovely thing. Only weak point of this hotel is the location which is very far from airport and city. If you have the business trip around Navi Mumbai, it's great to stay here.

It's come to the point where I don't have to think twice for finding a hotel in Mumbai - Mirador is my first port of call. It's not too huge - so that the place is expensive, and the services are really customised to the customer.

There is no amenities like it should be in a 4 star hotel. when i asked some staff which star it is they told 5 star property.Swimming pool was so small that it stats and ends and you don't know abt it. Resturant is good and near by local visit for breakfast or dinner with there family. food was very nice .we were upgraded to deluxe room and deluxe room size was so small ...so just wonder what will be of superior room. all together it was good hotel with nice food and staff but was not worth spending.

The stay at the ruby suite of the hotel was very comfortable. Staff were prompt in their service, a bit rushed perhaps at times. Had the breakfast buffet which was quite decent except for some of the breads which were on the firmer side. The location is great with the central business area being a short ten minute walk away.

The hotel is well located with short walking distance to Juhu beach. Very well welcomed by Ms. Rachelle with a wide smile on her face & very professional behavior during both checkin & checkout process. The hotel also accommodates an average gym & pool which is not normally available in other hotels within high rates areas of Mumbai. This hotel has one of best rated night spot R-adda club on the top floor but unfortunately the inhouse guests don't have any concession but need to suffer the noise from it if rooms somewhere around.

Good choice to stay in Mumbai. Nice room, comfortable bed, fridge, nice bathroom, newspaper in the morning, room service, good breakfast and good hotel restaurant. We were there for overnight stay between the flights. The staff at the reception was very friendly and arranged us taxi to the airport on time. Even though we overslept we managed to catch the flight. Also the guy in the lobby was very polite and helpful. My family was happy to stay here. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for an excellent hotel for a reasonable price.

From check in onwards everything was superb. First off my room was upgraded - not often that happens without a loyalty card! There is a small a la carte restaurant with well prepared and nicely presented food. The buffet adjacent to the lobby is more than adequate if you have less time. This same area is used for breakfast. The staff are proactive and try to anticipate every need. Even though the breakfast is a buffet, they still take an order and fill your plate when they are not too busy. Rooms are well equipped - the style is modern minimalist without being stark, but everything is there. Room service was very quick. You will not find better in the Rabale area of Navi Mumbai. The hotel is also the closest business hotel to the Ambernath area.

My stay at Hotel Yogi Executive for 2 nights and 3 days was a very comfortable one, especially since I had meetings in Navi Mumbai. The check-in and check-out hardly took any time and the staff was very cooperative. The room (upgraded to Designer) was very spacious and comfortable. The hotel provides very good access to Navi Mumbai and it is on the main road, so it is very easy to get public transport. The restaurant and the service are something which I would like to specifically mention here. Good food, though it is expensive when you are not going for the buffet. But the attitude and service were simply fantastic. Hats off to the team! Overall, a good hotel recommended for business travelers in Navi Mumbai and at a very value-for-money tariff! Totally recommended.

Really liked the stay, even when we had to extend our stay for a day, stayed in the same hotel. Since they provide a proper 1 or 2 bhk flat with all the facilities, it feels like home for people who are mostly on some business trips. This is the best thing I looked about it.

The hotel is fine. May be the price is higher that what you have expected to based on idea it's a 5 star hotel. Compared to Europe hotel it could be 3.5 - 4 stars. The staff is gentle and smiled and most important useful. The breakfast is serving into a small peace of a bistro inside and after 3 days staying you already have tried all menu which is rotating each morning. The room is clear and comfortable. It's equipped with AC, TV and Ipod dock. The bath is clean and well served. I've never tried the restaurant which is on first floor. Two times got a dinner into the bistro. Were expensive compared to the normal prices all over Mumbai - but guessing is a normal, they just working of their foreigner guests. The only problem that I expired was the Internet connection. The hotel changed their policy and starting from complimentary the Inet goes to be payed using some kind of vouchers. I was not very well surpassed because I have chosen this place because of fact Internet is free of charge.

enjoyed our stay at novotel mumbai juhu beach. i definitely recommend upgrading to the premier floor. the little extra money is definitely worth it, as the lounge offers great food. the food in the hotel, including the lounge, is extremely tasty. you just have to find out what time the food is served in the lounge, otherwise there is only tea and coffee. the breakfast buffet downstairs was great, and you could even get coconut water. the rooms were very nice, modern and new. try to get a seaview room if possible. the washrooms were really nice and clean. service in the hotel was good, but had to ask for a tour of where the facilities were. once we asked, they showed us right away. liked the security downstairs. area was was good. will definitely go back again on our next trip to mumbai and would recommend to anyone else going.

What lovely tasting food despite being made on a mass scale at the buffet breakfast! Fresh, wholesome tastes coming through just like it is at home, unlike other similar hotels in Mumbai... well done guys! I must point out the service I received was second to none, truly exceptional, right from the greet as I leave my transfer upon arrival, with every interaction with staff and my butler, and again when departing, especially my interactions with Irfan Lokhandwala during check out and even a day after checkout, thanks for your warmth Irfan!

I took a chance by stepping out of the usual list of brand-name hotels, and to be honest, I was not expecting much. I've never been so happy to be so wrong! The facilities, security, and the rooms were easily on par with any 4 star, the rooftop pool was sparkling clean, and whereas the room service was a little slow and overpriced, I don't really have a genuine complaint.

the courtyard by marriott hotel in mumbai maybe near the airport, but that doesnt mean you wont have any activity within the area. fastfood, some restaurants and convenience store can be found within the area. the staff are very helpful, respectful, and accommodating. i wish to stay here again in case i will visit mumbai. the breakfast selection maybe quite limited, but overall, i am truly satisfied with it. kudos to courtyard and id love to stay again in your hotel soon!!!

Great hotel in a good area. We received a pickup from the airport. Lovely journey and the driver was really helpful in telling us bits and pieces about Mumbai. Ate out by the Juhu Beach food place on the first day. Really cheap and good food. Ate in the hotel a few times and the food was good and the all you can eat buffet was good value (compared to the UK not to the rest of India) The travel service down stairs is good value for a driver and they are so helpful in touring around Mumbai. Will definitely stay again!

Cons: Room wasn’t ready, kept me waiting for almost an hour at night 11pm. Longer waiting for check in and check out Weak service recovery execution. Breakfast not up to the mark. i've stayed in a number of the top hotels in mumbai as i frequent the city for work and the sofitel is by far one of the best i've stayed in. it's location in bkc is well differentiated from the rest of the hotels in mumbai as it offers a central location at the same time that the area in general is not as congested compared to say, nariman point. the hotel itself is very well done. the rooms are brand new, very spacious and adorned with amenities. service is top notch--room service gets in quite quickly. best of all, i had an incident which involved me losing a personal item when i left for a party in a different hotel and the head of security still personally attended to me and stopped at nothing to help me look for my lost personal effects (which i later found). all in all, i don't think i'd stay anywhere else. the traditional mumbai hotels are nice, but quite "tired" in my opinion. if you're looking for something new, this would be the hotel to go to. and best of all, you get the same class of service as all the top-notch hotels at reasonable prices.

Those who appreciate highly attentive service will like this hotel--for me, it was a bit too much. I had a drink at a bar and in that hour, six different hotel staff came by to ask me if I was enjoying myself IN ADDITION to the two people serving me. At the buffet, I couldn't help myself to food--I had to have someone there to collect the items for me. I also found the food to be outrageously expensive. I had rice and lentils one night--two of the cheapest foods on the planet--and paid roughly $26 Canadian--at least double or triple what I would pay for something like that at home. That said, the hotel is gorgeous, the staff really is extremely helpful, my room was luxurious, and the massage I had at the spa was the best massage of my life.

We had been in India for a friends wedding and decided to have a nice two night stay in this hotel. We based this on high scores on the review section on Agoda and with the brand that we have stayed in before and trusted. The hotel had upgraded us which was a very pleasant surprise. The rooms were great and very comfortable. On the final evening of our stay, we had decided to eat at the Short and Long Bar. After a week of eating vegetarian food, we decided to eat some meat! My wife had Chicken. After eating and having a few drinks, we decided to go up to the Dome bar. After two hours of eating, my wife began to feel very unwell, and went back to our room. My wife then proceeded to be very unwell and began vomitting and had constant diarrhoea. This continued throughout the night and the next day. I mentioned this to the front desk and they gave her some fluid replacement sachets. My wife continued to be ill throughout the last day in Mumbai. We left Mumbai and she proceeded to vomit and have diarrhoea throughout the flight to Hong Kong. We went straight to the doctors when arriving and he confirmed that it was salmonella poisoning as all the symptoms were there and tests showed this. The only place she could have caught this was from the chicken in the hotel. I called the hotel as obviously this is a major worry. I spoke to the duty manager who explained that the food and beverage manager and the hotels main manager would call me within the hour. They didn’t. I proceeded to try and deal with this via phone four more times and no replies from anyone. Salmonella is a very serious issue. One of my major concerns is that there will have been other people who have eaten the same product as my wife but have misdiagnosed this as “Delhi Belly.” The complete and utter lack of caring from the hotel has impacted our entire belief into the Intercontinental brand. This is marketed as one of Mumbai’s finest hotels and therefore Salmonella should be the least of our worries.

having spent the previous 3 weeks in rural india we felt we needed a good night's sleep and a hot shower before our journey home. we encountered the 'airport greeters' from the 4 seasons when we arrived in india. although we weren't staying at that hotel they were incredibly kind and helpful and so when it came to book a hotel for our return journey we were determined to book a room at the 4 seasons. booking a room via the internet was easy and we decided to splash out and get a deluxe room with sea views. we returned to mumbai by train and took a taxi to the hotel. this proved slightly problematic because the address on the e mail confirmation gave the address as 'central mumbai' (a quite specific area, apparently). our taxi driver, therefore, had some difficulty locating the hotel. arriving at half seven in the morning, we decided to pay extra so that we could check in for an extra half day. it was well worth it. the room was superb; comfortable, clean and well equipped. the bed was incredibly comfortable. my only grouse was that i got the impression from the web site that the internet was part of the deal, it wasn't. our room was 'refreshed' several times during the few hours we stayed there. we ate in the cafe prato. we were, perhaps, a bit early for lunch, so i suppose that's why we had a bit of wait for our food, despite there being no other customers. the food was very good and, anyway, we weren't in a hurry. we spent the afternoon by the pool where we were indulged by the friendly staff. a swim in the pool was refreshing! breakfast was delicious and there was plenty of choice. generally, the hotel seemed to be used mostly by business people rather than travellers like ourselves - but we were being self indulgent. all of the staff were brilliant, including the driver that took us to the airport.

Most beautiful city in India. People are friendlier and not so many con artists. Goods are relatively priced well and higher end shops sell quality products.

You can get whatever you want to buy in Mumbai and the city is much cleaner than other cities.

Just go and visit. You may like it or not.We enjoyed our stay.If nothing else at least you can say, you were there.

MUMBAI LOOKS CROWDED, PEOPLE EVERYWHERE, CAR EVERYWHERE... BUT PEOPLE ARE VERY HUMBLE. YOU FEEL FREE THERE, VERY SAFE, NIGHT PUBS THRIVES TILL LATE NIGHT .

.. IF YOU FEEL MUMBAI A LAYER DOWN, IT HAS A LOT TO OFFER.

Absolutely unliveable city for long time. Roads are only built for vehicles and not for humans. No pavements to walk and if you try to cross the road, stop breathing and cross and take a deep breath when you get to the other side .

So called rich ppl move about in cars only and proud of themselves even in the filth and smell they come across. Some of the fantastic apartments in Mumbai but as soon as you step out, you enter the different world, I mean you live in luxurious place but once you come out you watch out every step you take and cover your mouth.

It's a buzzing city and looks like roads are only built for cars and Rickshaws. 99% of the roads are not walkable .

If there are footpaths, they are life threatening as slabs are broken and can fall into big hole. I would love to walk about but if I dare, there is a fear of getting knocked down. Request the Mubai authority to build high pavements so that cars and other vehicles can't parked and blocked by it. Very noisy and dusty city but that's what you expect. Traffic will destroy Mumbai if people are not allowed to walk and cross the roads. It's almost impossible to cross the roads and you have to run for life, believe me. So called rich people don't walk and just go in expensive cars but in the environment they don't care. It's a nightmare. Does the local government care? I think NOT

Big city atmosphere. I only come here for business if I must and sometimes use this as a transit point within in India.

The city is a logistical nightmare away from Colaba and Nariman point. Once you cross the causeway to the immediate suburbs or linking cities, be prepared for a frustrating commute within the city limits.

Local train is good way to explore this city around, very cheap only Rupee 10.00 almost nothing but must knownthe destination and which station must go down.

Going to airport cheapest way are combined metro train and tuktuk

It`s one of the best cities in India. Climate is comfortbale and people are very kind and reliable than people in other cities.

It`s much comfortable for me to stay here than staying in New Delhi.

Mumbai has a certain attraction that's hard to fathom, yet, is very enjoyable. There's the constant traffic with persistent hooting, yet, this does not become a bother.

There's hordes of people, yet, one can find your way around and get from one place to another fairly okay. Life happens in Mumbai, everyone is active and doing something, the shop owners and street vendors having their spot and purpose, the many coffee shops and restaurants providing the fuel necessary for people to grind the day away, University students and school kids bouncing around, meeting friends and just having a great time, scores of tourists trying to find their way around and absorb what this great city has to offer. Everyone just enjoys life, there's so many lessons that cities from across the world can take from Mumbai,I LOVE IT.

A great city and need a local guide or a friend who lives in mumbai with transport to takes us around.

Mumbai has much to offer. You have to know the places for nightlife and yoy have to be a minimum of 5 days to discover the things you like to do.

This commercial center of India is a microcosm of the entire nation. Though crowded n not very clean, the energy of the city is unmatched.

Friendly citizens are the biggest plus point in this place.

If you are travelling during any of the festivities please make sure to book your taxi/transport in advance as taxis get booked up very quickly and you will be paying inflated taxi fares.

The taxi drivers will insist on inflated fares without using the meters.I had to pay 700Rs during the Holi festival just to get to the airport!

Good place to visit and explore its great old architectural buildings like CST, Church gate, Municipality building, High court etc Colaba, cuffee parade area is good for marketing and eating out.

However, getting on board or getting down from local trains during office time is very difficult..you have to literally fight!

Mumbai is crazy busy with traffic, slums, the rich, the very poor, beggars and flash car. It is a city of extremes.

Busy bustling city with lots of sites.Cab rates are fixed and availabe upon request. At the airports use pre-paid cabs.

.its cheaper and safer

Mumbai is over crowded city with the high population. They have a lot f heritage building, but unlucky they not well maintain.

It is overpopulated. I was amazed to see so many people. The city doesnt sleep. You do get annoyed when many photograhers approach you at the same time at famous sites and it is very difficult for them to except "no" as an amswer.

The historical buildings are great sight seeing agenda. This magnificent building have blended historical insights.

Food is generally great especially the Northern Indian cuisine. Many famous and trendy restaurants are there for good food and ambience.

Mumbai is a good place to visit. It is rich in culture and history, and has lots of good food. Once downside is that it is very crowded and traffic is terrible.

Traffic all day long, very hard to find a taxi in the night as they don't stop for passengers mostly.

There are many shopping areas as Linking Road and Santa Cruz & fashion street, Crawford market etc. You can get bargained offers most of the time.

LOCAL TRANSPOTATION IS VERY GOOD TO USE LIKE - AUTO`S,TAXI`S,BUSES,METRO,LOCAL TRAINS AND LONG DISTANCE TRAINS

Fabulous markets, friendly people, exotic culture, vibrant colours and lifestyle. And wonderful food!!

Very busy and fast moving. Must always have extra time in hand as traffic is unpredictable. Wonderful for shopping and dining as wide range of shops and restaurants.

We enjoyed Mumbai as a stop over. The best hotels are around Juhu beach but you can also get nice ones closer to the airport.

The best shopping areas are around Santa Cruz, Bandra and Coloba. Leopold's in Coloba is a great cafe and the markerts around causeway are good too. The Marina Drive is a lovely romantic spot.

Mumbai is a fast moving city. The people are friendly. You find anything one needs. The is lost of activities.

As i said before and will tell this again. The people are very friendly and warm. Easy reach to the hotel from airport.

Gate way of India, Juhu beach, Iskon temple,Mahalakshmi Temple, film city, etc.are the places of interest.

he crowds, the hoooting and mayhem of the city is way too much, but its a cultural experience. I only ever spend time in Mumbai to shop, as indian clothing choices and wuality are ample in the various new shopping malls

About Mumbai

Navigating Mumbai is a challenge. Stretching along seven islands and a long peninsula, this is a big city; each district has its own noted attractions and atmosphere. We have carefully listed the hotels to give you the best experience of the different faces of Mumbai. Whether your trip is for business, pleasure, or history and culture, The Hotel Guru has done the research for you and can recommend the best places to stay in Mumbai. We've scoured the city and come up with what we think is a comprehensive selection from five star luxury grand dames, to authentic guesthouses and up-to-the-minute design hotels.

A stroll along the Bandra-Worli Sea Link bridge, opened in 2009, offers splendid views of the city and is a real must on any trip. This architectural masterpiece is a beautiful spot from which to enjoy the sunset. For a dose of culture, the Shree Siddhivinayak Temple is a fascinating place to learn all about Hinduism, especially the Lord Shri Ganesh to whom it's dedicated. Marvel at the inner roof, covered in gold, and at the ornate decorations. While the Gothic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is a glorious spot to visit; a train station featuring stained-glass windows, wonderful spires, domed arches and elaborately carved pillars. Another remnant of the city's colonial past is the Gateway of India, a large stone archway built in 1911 to welcome the King and Queen of England. Jump on one of the local ferries and enjoy the impressive structure from the water.

This is a fascinating, fast and diverse city. Use our guide to the best places to stay in Mumbai and start to plan your visit.

The best places to stay in Mumbai

For the city centre.

  • The Sofitel BKC is wonderfully situated bang in the centre of town and offers smart five star accommodation. The sparkling rooms feature plush velvet and plenty of mirrors, whilst there are also four restaurants to choose from.
  • Hyatt Regency Mumba i and the Grand Hyatt Mumbai both offer simple contemporary rooms with pleasant gardens. Great for casual city breaks and two of the best places to stay in Mumbai for families.
  • The Leela Mumbai features lavish interior design with its fine silks, rich velvets and artwork on the walls. Located just five minutes from the airport, it's also a great base from which to explore the city's sights.
  • JW Marriot Mumbai Star is a glitzy stay in the centre of town, offering sleek accommodation, an extensive spa and gourmet Italian restaurant.

South Mumbai

Primarily the financial and business district, but it's also a good base if you're here to see the museums, forts, temples and hanging gardens. The Colaba area on the southern tip is a lively neighbourhood packed with bars, markets and street stalls which are open from the early morning until late into the evening.

  • The Gordon House Hotel has just 20 stylish rooms in an excellent location in the old town of Colaba. More Mediterranean than Indian, this hotel also has its own nightclub.

  • Le Sutra in Khar is a great option if you're looking for something a bit different. Many of the hotels in this area are super modern and soulless, but Le Sutra's 14 rooms are each based on an Indian myth or custom, so it's got a 'boutique-y' feel.
  • The Svenska Design Hotel has clean, Scandi lines and state-of-the-art everything, with iPod docking, Wii consoles and iPads all complimentary. There's also a Japanese rooftop bar, where you may run into local tycoons.

14 of the best hotels in Mumbai

Discover the best places to stay during a trip to mumbai, from beachside bolt holes in juhu to former palaces in colaba.

Soho House Mumbai

I t’s now officially known as Mumbai , but you’ll often hear Mumbaikars referring to this slick city by its former name, “Bombay” — after all, as the saying goes, “Mumbai is the city, Bombay is the emotion”. This place has an inimitable blend of soul, style and swagger. Between activist-led art galleries, historic former palaces, cutting-edge fashion designers and some of the best-rated restaurants on the planet, there’s plenty to do and see — whether you’re in the car-honking thrum of the action or whiling away the day on the beach with your toes in the cerulean Arabian Sea. So, let us help you get situated to discover all that the city has to offer with our pick of Mumbai’s best hotels.

1. Oberoi Mumbai, Nariman Point

Oberoi Mumbai

Best for understated luxury The family-run Oberoi group has long been considered the gold standard for Indian hospitality; 24-hour service at each of their properties is warm, discreet and flawlessly efficient. The Mumbai outpost, in business district Nariman Point amid the art deco buildings of glittering Marine Drive, is no different, and it manages to marry the inimitable style of the city with dazzling views of the Arabian Sea. The 287 rooms are comfortable and understatedly elegant; our suite had monogrammed pillowcases and pistachio silk kimonos so exquisite we had to fight the urge to take them home.

2. abode bombay, colaba.

Abode Bombay

Best for solo travellers Describing itself as “the ultimate anti-chain hotel”, this photogenic Colaba guesthouse is the antithesis of the often-hierarchical brand of Indian luxury hospitality. Everyone under this roof is humanised and placed on equal footing: staff and guests call one another by their first names; and there’s a convivial feel among residents who want to understand the soul of “Bombay”. Who better to help than a hotel with a heart? Abode regularly works with local NGOs — for example, drivers employed by the hotel come via an organisation that helps women impacted by domestic violence into long-term employment.

3. Soho House Mumbai, Juhu

Soho House Mumbai

Best for celeb-spotting Want a snapshot of modern Mumbai? Soho House’s Juhu outpost — the first in Asia and the only one of the group’s clubs currently bookable for non-members — is the place to be. The interiors riff on the group’s identifiable bohemian aesthetic with a mix of plush Indian textiles and Mumbai-based contemporary artists. Hotel residents have access to the member facilities: music, fashion and wellbeing events; the onsite cinema; three restaurants and Bombay’s coolest rooftop bar, where you can recline poolside under a striped linen cabana and watch Bollywood actors and models sip spicy tequila cocktails.

Best for an eco experience If you don’t want to let environmental standards slip while you travel, look no further than the Orchid hotel in Vile Parle. This place was Asia’s first Ecotel-certified property; it was consciously designed to be energy efficient and was constructed with recycled materials. The resort makes a continuous effort to keep its footprint to a minimum; everything from hangers made of sawdust and reed slippers to an onsite sewage treatment plant. It plays hard too; the in-house karaoke bar is a real hit.

5. JW Marriott Mumbai Juhu

JW Marriott Mumbai Juhu

Best for location This relative newcomer to the city is already leading the way when it comes to new-age corporate hospitality in Mumbai. Each of the 345 rooms and suites are chic and spacious; think enormous cloud-like beds, woven leather ottomans, bathrooms with heather-grey marble and polished wooden accents. There’s plenty to keep families occupied on site: three pools, four restaurants (Asian-inspired Dashanzi is one of the best in town for celeb-spotting) and the lovely Quan spa — but with the shops, bars and shores of trendy Juhu Beach just a few minutes’ walk away, you’ll be hard-pressed to stay put.

6. St Regis Mumbai, Lower Parel

St Regis Mumbai

Best for wellness This swanky spot, located nearly 40 storeys high in the Palladium Mall near chi-chi Lower Parel, straddles the polarity of the city. From one side of the skyscraper, you can see the love-it-or-hate-it Ambani “house” — the 27-storey residence of one of India’s richest men — and on the flip, inside one of Mumbai’s industralised slums, Dhobi Ghat. Forget opulent former palaces; this contemporary joint is where Mumbaikars go for glitz and glamour. But while the hotel’s sleek restaurants and bars may be a mainstay of the elite, the Iridium Spa (which has its own floor) is really where it’s at; we rate the rose quartz massage.

Spa Y Pool Y Price £££

7. The Leela Mumbai, Andheri

The Leela Mumbai

Best for city respite Just ten minutes’ drive from Chhatrapati Shivaji International, the Leela could well be Mumbai’s chicest airport hotel. But that would be doing a disservice to this serene, palm-fringed pad; it’s where many stressed-out Mumbaikars come to escape the city chaos. Find them robed-up in the decent spa, reading books by the pool or sipping cocktails at the Six Senses bar, which opens out onto the hotel’s lush gardens. The real draw, though? As any former patron of the Leela group might attest to, this is where you come for some of the most reliably brilliant food in the city; its flagship Jamavar restaurant is winning similar plaudits in London’s Mayfair.

8. Taj Lands End, Bandra Kurla Complex

Taj Lands End

Best for couples This gleaming property has the best of both worlds; mesmerising views of the water (the Arabian Sea and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link) and proximity to the hippest area in Mumbai — a combination you’d be otherwise hard-pressed to find in this city. It has all the polish you’d expect from the Taj group, but without the stuffiness of its famous older sister in Colaba. Here, in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), you’re near the heart of Bandra’s action — home of Bollywood, countless upscale boutiques and some of the city’s coolest restaurants — and, though the interiors might be a little bland, the vibe at this contemporary hotel reflects the area pretty well. Keep an eye out, too, for movie legend Shah Rukh Khan — his house is just down the road.

9. The Gordon House Hotel, Colaba

Best for a budget stay Just 650 yards from the Gateway of India, in Colaba, a stroll into this small, affordable, guesthouse-style hotel feels like stumbling upon an insider secret. You may be tempted to breeze past its crumbling whitewashed façade without a second glance, but let us tell you: it belies interiors that are a little bit Wes Anderson, as well as a gentle and friendly team and a cluster of unique and comfortable rooms. Don’t miss the Havana Café & Bar on site, too; it puts on thoroughly fun retro-themed nights every Friday.

10. Grand Hyatt Mumbai, Bandra Kurla Complex

Grand Hyatt Mumbai

Best for business This sprawling Bandra-based complex feels less like a hotel and more like a man-made hamlet; it’s so big, it’s often the property of choice for society weddings and visiting Indian cricket teams. There are four restaurants on site, as well as 548 rooms and 110 serviced apartments, set amid ten acres of lush gardens. This is a failsafe for corporate travellers: its location in the Bandra Kurla Complex (Mumbai’s business district) means minimal traffic; the hotel has top-of-the-range event and conference facilities; and the swanky restaurants of Bandra — some of the city’s most impressive places to bag a table — are a stone’s throw away.

Spa N Pool Y Price £

11. Trident BKC, Bandra Kurla Complex

Best for value for money Granted, there wouldn’t usually be many reasons to base yourself in the business district when you’re on holiday, but this contemporary BKC-based spot might well be an exception to the rule. While the interiors feel pretty cut-and-paste for a corporate hotel, the detail here is what makes it a cut above: club-level rooms get their own butlers; the spa does great value-for-money massages; and the service is exceptional — staff are attentive without being intrusive and quickly learn dietary preferences. Plus, you’re nearby cool craft breweries and restaurants as well as the hip neighbourhoods of Bandra and Juhu.

12. ITC Grand Central, Parel

ITC Grand Central

Best for fancy food The old-fashioned decor at this palatial-style hotel is modelled on the architecture constructed by the British. Interiors in each of the 242 rooms feel a little too fusty, but the public spaces of this grand Parel-based property are all marble, gilding and opulent textiles. This is the place to come for a traditional upscale meal; the renowned dal bukhara (from the namesake restaurant at sister property in Delhi) is on the menu at the excellent Kebabs & Kurries, and is arguably the best you’ll eat in town. Don’t forget to explore Parel, though; you’ll find a mix of glossy malls and a thriving independent creative scene on your doorstep.

13. ITC Maratha, Andheri

Best for the airport This might be one of the most glamorous airport hotels in the country. With its unique domed roof (said to have been created in homage to the architecture of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus), sumptuous interiors inspired by the Maratha dynasty of India and outposts of some of the top-rated restaurants in the country — including fine-dining Indian restaurant Dum Pukht — you’ll struggle to find another property quite like it. The opulent onsite spa, Kaya Kalp, is not to be sniffed at either. Just don’t blame us if you get a little too comfortable and miss your next flight.

14. Taj Mahal Palace, Colaba

Taj Mahal Palace

Best for glamour There aren’t many instances where a hotel becomes synonymous with a city, but this Colaba-based grande dame is unquestionably woven into the tapestry of Mumbai. Its stance at the Gateway of India has held strong since its opening in 1903, throughout highs and lows alike — including India’s independence from the British (which was announced on its staircase in 1947) and the 2008 terror attacks that targeted the property. Over the years, its aspirational, old-fashioned glamour has attracted everyone from royals to sitting presidents — who say that “Tajness” is what keeps them coming back.
