- Grande confronted a reporter to clear up rumors about her song.
- The singer shuts down an interviewer's comparisons to Ed Sheeran.
Ariana Grande is no stranger to the adjective "diva" to describe a facet of her personality. Being an acclaimed voice in the music industry with roots in television, Grande has been accustomed to everything that comes with being a star, including interviews.
Being known to make diva-like demands , it's not surprising that the "7 Rings" singer has some interview moments that can come off as confrontational to viewers.
Here's a look into the artist's most confrontational interviews...
Ariana Grande Got Annoyed By Sexist Questions And Comments During An Interview
Ariana grande's interview with power 106 los angeles - october 2015.
In a 2015 interview with Power 106 Los Angeles, hosts Eric D-Lux and Justin Credible had Ariana Grande on the radio show to promote her single "Focus," which was released on October 30, 2015.
The interview started off in high spirits with the hosts asking Grande a series of questions about her music and interests, alongside playing games such as a song-guessing game where Grande had to guess which lyrics matched her songs. The conversation seemed to be going great until the hosts started asking Grande superficial questions and making comments that obviously bothered her.
Ariana Grande Worries About Her Reputation As She Continues Dating Married Man
One of many bothersome questions came up during a segment of the show where the hosts created questions surrounding the themes of Ariana Grande's song titles; she was asked this: If you could use makeup or your phone one last time, which one would you pick?
"Is this what you think girls have trouble choosing between? " Grande responded, visibly annoyed.
"Is this men assuming that that's what girls would have to choose between?... You need a little brushing up on equality."
This led to Grande shifting the conversation into a quick and subtle lesson on feminism, ultimately avoiding the question she didn't like entirely.
Ariana Grande Isn't Fond Of Celebrity Reporters, And She Isn't Afraid To Tell Them To Their Faces...
Ariana grande's interview with entertainment tonight - august 2014.
In a short 2014 interview clip from Entertainment Tonight , Ariana Grande shamelessly confronts a reporter as she tries to clear up rumors about her song "Break Your Heart Right Back" from her "My Everything" Album.
Grande appeared defensive after the ET reporter started quoting previous interview responses regarding the backstory to the song in question. Grande quickly interjected, saying, "People took my quote and made a headline out of it. I know what y'all do." (insert eye roll.)
Ariana Grande Was Slammed By Disney And Universal Park Employees For Being "The Rudest Person"
The ET interviewer continued to allow Grande to clear up the rumors, but any viewer of this interaction can vicariously feel the tension in the room and, quite literally, cut it with a knife.
Ariana Grande's Called Out Reporter For Not Doing Research Before The Interview
Ariana grande's interview with extratv - november 2013.
Ariana Grande had another run-in with another reporter from ExtraTv. After questions surrounding Grande's thoughts and feelings on receiving the New Artist of the Year Award at the 2013 American Music Awards, reporter Renee Bargh finally got to what the headline entices: Ariana Grande Nearly Made Out with Patrick Schwarzenegger.
This, however, did not happen, according to Grande. In fact, Schwarzenegger and her didn't even kiss. "Girl, you didn't see the video?" Grande directed at Bargh (insert eye roll). Apparently, Bargh hadn't seen the music video and was "just told" this information. Well, this misinformation made her take most of the heat from Grande's clear irritation.
Ariana Grande Clapped Back After Being Compared To Ed Sheeran
Ariana grande's interview with loose women - october 2014.
Ariana Grande gave off the thank you, next energy after being compared to Ed Sheeran in an interview with Loose Women . Based in the United Kingdom, it seems as if no one is safe from Grande's legendary confrontations.
During the show, the then-21-year-old Grande was asked why women need to show skin. This question followed after the interviewer acknowledged Grande's transition from a child Nickelodeon star to a star with a more mature image.
As the question was taking shape, however, Grande interrupted numerous times. First, at the accusation of her reportedly saying verbatim, "I like showing a lot of skin because I want to," in which, she turned to the audience and asked, "Did I say any of these things?" Second, at the comparison between the way she dresses and the way Ed Sheeran "just wears a scruffy, old shirt and jeans," in which she claps back "Well, he's also a boy." (insert look of annoyance.)
Eventually, Grande concluded that she doesn't think girls need to show skin and that they should feel empowered to wear whatever they want.
Ariana Grande Got Defensive When Ryan Seacrest Asked About Her Relationship With Mac Miller
Ariana grande's interview with ryan seacrest - september 2016.
In 2016, Ariana Grande appeared on iHeart's On Air With Ryan Seacrest to talk about her "Dangerous Woman" tour and recent life updates, one of which being her blossoming romance with rapper Mac Miller. It was clear from the jump that Grande did not want to discuss her love life.
"If I post something, then that's what I'm willing to share at the moment. That doesn't mean then [that] you Ryan Seacrest with millions of listeners are entitled to more information."
Despite posting pictures of Mac Miller and her on Instagram, she didn't see that act as confirming a relationship. "It's too early for this kind of tea," Grande said, shutting down this topic.
Ariana Grande Denied Cheating On Mac Miller But Has She Ever Admitted To Being The Other Woman?
Ariana grande called a radio host a jerk during an interview, ariana grande's interview with the edge 96.1 - september 2014.
During an interview with the Australian radio station The Edge 96.1 , Ariana Grande calls Mike E, one of the radio hosts, a jerk.
This comment came after Mike E attempted to give Grande life advice, saying, "Don't listen to what anyone says and, actually, if they're talking about you, it's great." He then continued to ramble on with, "Because you don't want to be... like Leona Lewis or... who's someone else that no one cares about?" This comment immediately sparked Grande's open-mouthed, shocked look in which she responded:
"You're a jerk... I hate this man right here."
Given the former Victorious star's track record with confrontational interviews, we'll for sure be getting more clap backs in the future.

Ariana Grande's tour bus arrives back at Lowry hotel after horrific terror attack at Manchester Arena
The singer took to Twitter to apologise for the terror attack, which took place shortly after her concert ended on Monday night

Footage has emerged appearing to show Ariana Grande's tour bus arriving back at her hotel hours after the horrific terror attack which unfurled following her concert in Manchester .
Some 19 people were killed when an explosion rocked the star's concert at the Manchester Arena yesterday evening.
In a heartstricken message posted on Twitter, Ariana apologised for what happened and called herself "broken".
"Broken. from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don't have words," she said.
Her followers were quick to reassure the 23-year-old that the blast was not her fault, with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton telling her not to feel guilty.
"This is not your fault. Don't internalize any guilt. We are all hurting. Much love," he tweeted.
TMZ has reported that Ariana has suspended the rest of her world tour in the wake of the incident.
She is currently on the UK leg of her Dangerous Woman world tour and is due to perform at London's O2 Arena on Thursday and Friday.
However, The O2 tweeted to warn ticketholders that the concerts might not go ahead in the wake of the deadly attack.
"Ariana is due to perform at The O2 on Thursday and Friday and we will advise as soon as we can as to the status of those shows," it said in a short statement.
TMZ now claims Ariana's tour has been put on hold 'indefinitely', meaning her upcoming concerts in Belgium, Poland, Germany and Switzerland will likely be cancelled, or at least postponed.
It came after Ariana's manager broke his silence for the first time since the incident, which is now being investigated as a terrorist attack.
A statement released by Scooter Braun said he was heartbroken by the event.
"Tonight, our hearts are broken. Words cannot express our sorrow for the victims and families harmed in this senseless attack," the statement read.
"We mourn the lives of children and loved ones taken by this cowardly act. We are thankful for the selfless service tonight of Manchester's first responders who rushed towards danger to help save lives."
It went on: "We ask all of you to hold the victims, their families and all those affected in your hearts and prayers."
It comes after one image has been gaining traction on social media for its simple poignancy in paying tribute to the 19 people killed and 50 injured in the attack.
As shared by Ariana's good friend Hailee Steinfield, the image features a black crossed ribbon topped with a pair of shiny bunny ears - one of Ariana's trademark accessories.
In fact, the 23-year-old star is so well known for her headgear that Hailee didn't even need to add words to the image; her fans instantly knew what it meant.
Police have confirmed that 19 people in the arena died in a blast - which, according to many reports, came from a nail bomb - and prime minister Theresa May has condemned the incident as "an appalling terrorist attack".
Hundreds of people fled the arena screaming after hearing 'loud bangs' at the end of an Ariana Grande concert - where many of the gig goers were young girls of primary and secondary school age with their parents.
Witnesses said they saw smoke and heard an explosion coming from the foyer area - and reported seeing people covered in blood - at around 10.40pm.

There are unconfirmed reports that people have suffered "shrapnel type injuries" in the incident at the 21,000-capacity arena tonight - as local hospitals reported they were expecting "mass casualties."
If it is confirmed as a terror attack it will be the deadliest on UK soil since the 7/7 attacks in 2005.
Perez Hilton's blog claimed Ariana - who was not on stage at the time of the blast - is "in hysterics" following the incident and "is in no condition to perform", according to an insider.
Mirror Celeb has contacted Ariana's rep for comment.
Meanwhile, celebrities from Harry Styles and Cher to Gary Lineker and Katy Perry have expressed their condolences and shock at the attack.
Jason Manford struggled to hold back his tears as he appeared in a Facebook Live video to condemn the blast and send the victims and their families his support.

Ariana Grande Explains Her Most Recent Performance Breakdowns: 'Sometimes I Cry a Lot'
"I feel everything very intensely and have committed to doing this tour during a time in my life when I'm still processing a lot" the singer said

Ariana Grande opened up about the struggles of tour life in a sweet letter to her fans on Sunday, after video surfaced of the singer crying her way through performances during her Sweetener World Tour.
The “Break Free” songstress, 26, was seen in a concertgoer’s video breaking down into tears at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri on Saturday, while singing “R.E.M.,” a love song Grande’s fans connect to her ex-fiancé, Pete Davidson .
Similar tears were shed on June 12, according to another fan-shot viral video which showed Grande getting emotional before singing the late Mac Miller ‘s name in her hit tune, “Thank U, Next,” during a performance at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Miller’s hometown).
During both events, the singer was showered with cheers of support from the crowd, something for which she said in her note on Sunday that she was grateful for.
“I feel everything very intensely and have committed to doing this tour during a time in my life when I’m still processing a lot … so sometimes I cry a lot!” Grande wrote in an Instagram post which has since been deleted. “I thank you for accepting my humanness.”
“I’m not sure what I did to deserve to meet so many loving souls every night / to feel so much love, but I want you to know that it really does carry me through,” she added. “I feel it and I appreciate it. And all of you so so much.”
Grande began her post by explaining that life on tour, is “wild” but that the kindness she’s experienced both on stage and off has helped her immensely.
She wrote: “I’m grateful for the sea of love I have around me every day and for the people who come to these shows and give all of us every ounce of energy they’ve got. I’m grateful to work with the best musicians and dancers in the world. I’m grateful for my voice and my team. I’m grateful for this music. I’m grateful for my tour bus driver, Kurt, who bought me pickles yesterday because he saw we ran out. I’m grateful for the opportunity to sing for thousands of people every night. It’s a dream come true.”
“No matter how hard it gets or how many feelings come up that are screaming at me to be processed and sorted through one day, I’m grounded by gratitude and promise not to give up on what I’ve started,” Grande continued.
The post ended with an inspirational message of hope for those going through similar pains.
“I’m sharing this because I’m grateful and because I want you to know that if you too are hurting, you can push through and are not alone,” the Grammy-winning artist said. “It is hard to balance taking care of the people around you, doing your job, and healing / taking care of yourself at the same time … but I want you to know, you aren’t along and I think you’re doing great. Love you.”
It’s been a complicated few years for Grande, filled with many ups and downs.
In August, Grande released her fourth full-length LP, Sweetener , which tackled some of the emotional pain she felt after the deadly bombing at her Manchester concert back in 2017 and the death of on-again, off-again boyfriend, Miller, who died of an accidental overdose at the age of 26. A month after Miller’s death, Grade and her then-fiancé, Pete Davidson , called it quits.
By February, Grande was back on the charts with her album, Thank U, Next. The hit album brought a string of charting hits, including the title track, “7 Rings,” and “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.” Those three songs alone allowed Grande to make history as the second artist — after the Beatles — to have the top three spots on the Billboard Hot 100.
Following her album success, Grande performances at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards (where she won two awards) and served as the headliner for Coachella. And just last month, the star was announced as one of the cast members in Ryan Murphy’s film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, The Prom .
Throughout it all, her loyal Arianators have stayed by her side.
“You guys and my friends saved my life,” Grande told them, upon Thank U, Next ‘s release. “I love y’all.”

Ariana Grande Opens Up About Balancing Tour Life and Healing: 'Sometimes I Cry a Lot'

The singer got real with her fans in a heartfelt, lengthy post to Instagram on Sunday.
Ariana Grande is getting real about the challenges she has faced in recent years and the emotional difficulty of going on tour while also sharing her gratitude for the people who make it possible.
The "7 Rings" songstress took to Instagram on Sunday to open up about being on her Sweetener Tour during a point in her life when she's "still processing a lot," and how she's still incredibly grateful for everything she's lucky enough to have.
"Tour is wild. life is wild. i’m grateful for the sea of love i have around me everyday and for the people who come to these shows and give all of us every ounce of energy they’ve got," Grade wrote, alongside a snapshot of herself performing on stage during one of her concerts. "I’m grateful to work with the best musicians and dancers in the world. i’m grateful for my voice and my team. i’m grateful for this music."
"I’m grateful for my tour bus driver, Kurt who bought me pickles yesterday because he saw we ran out," she continued. "I’m grateful for the opportunity to sing to thousands of people every night. it’s a dream come true."

The 26-year-old singer - who was reportedly seen in fan-shot videos struggling to get through a song as she choked back tears on stage - said she's someone who feels "everything very intensely."
"I have committed to doing this tour during a time in my life when i’m still processing a lot ... so sometimes i cry a lot!" Grande wrote, seemingly addressing the video. "I thank you for accepting my humanness. i’m not sure what i did to deserve to meet so many loving souls every night / to feel so much love, but i want you to know that it really does carry me through. i feel it and i appreciate it. and all of you so much."
Grande concluded her heartfelt post with a message for any of her fans who may also be struggling with emotional challenges and hardships.
"I’m sharing this because i’m grateful and because i want you to know that if you too are hurting, you can push through and are not alone," she wrote. "It is hard to balance taking care of the people around you, doing your job, and healing / taking care of yourself at the same time... but i want you to know, you aren’t alone and i think you’re doing great."

Launching her artistic career with performances on Broadway and childhood acting, Ariana Grande has earned her place as an accoladed pop star with numerous number-one albums. Born in 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida, Grande rose to fame young and continues to deliver chart-topping hits.
Praised for just about every facet of Grande’s artistry, be it her personality, her presentation, or most of all, her incredible voice, Ariana Grande has earned multiple American Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards.
As a young girl, Grande wanted nothing more than to record an R&B album, but her journey would first include numerous roles on stage. One of her first breaks into the music scene was in a supporting role in the Broadway musical 13. This role earned Ariana the National Youth Theater Association Award for Best Supporting Actress.
From here, Grande’s career continued to blossom. She landed a role on Nickelodeon’s Victorious, her first big break that made her a household name across America. Ariana worked on the show for three seasons, starring as Cat Valentine, a goofy but loveable aspiring singer-actress. When Victorious ended, Grande went on to star in the spin-off Sam & Cat.
During all her early television fame, Grande continued to pursue her musical dreams. As she acted, she also worked on her debut album while training with vocal coach Eric Vetro, who had also worked with Katy Perry.
Grande completed her debut album, Yours Truly, in June 2013. When she released it in the U.S. on August 30th, it debuted at number one. This made Grande the 15th female artist to have her debut album top the charts. From this album, Grande gained incredible accolades, with critics comparing her vocal range to that of Mariah Carey. The album’s lead single, “The Way,” quickly became a top hit, increasing the popularity of the young artist.
The success kept building from there as she was named one of Billboard's hottest acts under 21. At this time, Ariana went on tour with Justin Bieber on the Believe Tour.
Grande managed to fit in a couple of performances at the White House before releasing My Everything in August 2014. With the release of her second album, Grande’s popularity rose to a whole new level. Seen as a sign of her maturation, My Everything spawned worldwide super-hits like “Problem” (featuring Iggy Azalea) and “Bang Bang” (with Nicki Minaj and Jessie J). Grande would spend 34 weeks with hit singles in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
In the following year, Grande headed out on her first world tour — the Honeymoon Tour. Ariana used this tour to promote My Everything while continuing to pursue her next album release.
In 2016, Ariana dropped a third studio album, Dangerous Woman. Once again, the album was an instant success, with the title track debuting at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. This earned Ariana the unique position of being the first person in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart to have lead singles from their first three albums launch within the top ten spots.
Two years later, after touring, Grande released her fourth album, Sweetener. This album would go on to win the Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy in February 2019. Immediately after, she began her Sweetener Tour, her longest global tour yet with over 100 shows.
In 2019, Grande released Thank, U, Next, followed by her 2020 studio album Positions. Both albums were smash hits, and were certified Platinum by the RIAA. Since the release of Positions, Grande has also collaborated with other top performers on a string of chart-topping singles, including “34+35” (with Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion), “Save Your Tears” (with The Weeknd), and “Just Look Up” (with Kid Cudi).

My sister really loves Ariana Grande and one day I had some extra money so I surprised her with tickets to a live show. She is a popular singer and my sister really loves her but I was pretty skeptical,I really wanted to do something nice for my sister though so I went anyways.
When she introduced herself at the start of the concert she had a really heartwarming voice and just seemed like such a nice person. The crowd got all quiet when she started singing and there was an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation in the air. She started singing and her voice was hauntingly beautiful, all my skepticism evaporated in a wave and I found myself hanging on her every word, especially during "Almost is Never Enough" and "Honeymoon Avenue".
The lyrics of her music were incredibly well crafted and her voice was perfect for them. I felt like I was experiencing something unique and was very glad to have come. Ariana looked amazing in her dress and just seemed really classy overall,it made it really easy to respect her as a singer. The crowd just remained quiet throughout and everyone was watching with respectful interest. My sister had a fantastic time and overall I had a much better time than I thought I would too and was glad I went.
I went to Ariana Grande's concert in San Jose at the SAP Center, and it was one of the best concerts I've been to. I went with my mom, aunt, and cousin, and we all had a great time! Ariana threw a great concert! Her two opening artists were both great and built up the excitement in the crowd. Cashmere Cat might not be for all, but Rixton had a very great set and interacted with the audience. When Ariana came on stage, I could feel the excitement throughout the whole arena and Ariana's voice was phenomenal! I could tell that she was not lip-syncing or using auto tune and she was very energetic throughout the show. She had many costume changes as well as changing the stage, and she even came in on a cloud and chandelier. Her closing song was Problem and I could tell that she totally enjoyed singing for all her fans.
Overall, I would most definitely go to another one of her concerts! Her presence was powerful and her singing was spectacular, and it was all around a great show! Honestly, this show is more for younger girls/boys and teens but I saw a lot of moms and dads enjoying themselves at this concert. The screaming is loud and merchandise is a bit pricey, but it is totally worth it. Thanks for the great show Ari!
I am so disappointed .
I tried to send this message lastnight. But never seem to be able to contact the ticket company.
I paid a lot of money for these tickets , paid airplane tickets & hotel to go to this concert with my young daughter for a birthday present.
I have found it extremely difficult to actually get my tickets in hand , have made many phone calls to ticket master, chasing around to agents in ibiza to try get them printed ana ALL with no luck.
And they were not sent to me.
We have arrived here to pick up the tickets at office at Palau San Jordi and have been told that my tickets cannot be printed . I have paid €330 for these , plus all the other expenses ana cannot enter ! It's ridiculous. You had more than half a year to get my tickets to me and yet failed.
I would like a refund totally and some compensation as have made a wasted trip to Barcelona from ibiza for this!
Please can someone call me on 0034 657729330 to sort out

Ariana Grande is the latest american teen star to make it big globally. With a vocal likened to the iconic Mariah Carey and a string of international hit singles from her 2014 album 'My Everything', she is one of the most in demand stars of the moment.
Her live performance is polished and concise, perhaps due to the theatre background she came from before her breakthrough. Often performing elaborate dance routines during her hits such as 'Be My Baby' she still hits every note intended and wows fans all at once. The petite star is relatively humble despite her seemingly overnight transformation into a megastar. She is confident yet still acknowledges fans throughout and performs sections of songs on the front row.
The place erupts in cheers for her solo hit 'Problem' and although there is no guest appearance from Iggy Azalea, she tears through this pop gem. Encore track 'Bang Bang' is slightly anti-climatic as the majority of the vocal is actually Jessie J yet Ariana puts her own sugary sweet spin on the track to the delight of the crowd.
Yesterday I went to the Ariana Grande concert in Hamburg. I really enjoyed the show, she sang so good and hit some high notes! The background effects were also very cool and matching to the songs. If you’re into her music i’d definitely recommend going, because it’s an awesome performance to watch. You should keep in mind that the screen is kind of small, so if you want to have the best experience, get your seats in the front or buy tickets for the standing area. All in all, I absolutely recommend going, even if you’re not the biggest fan of her, because the light effects (there even was a moon hanging down) are breathtaking, but if you’re more into acoustic concerts, you should overthink going. Anyways, I loved the concert and totally enjoyed it!
I was at the show you did in São Paulo and I loved the show, but since nothing is perfect, the organization left something to be desired. Outside, there was no queue and the organizers said, "Do not queue up! Get together and walk according to the schedule movement!" And so it was each one pushing the other all day, because of that we could not go to the bathroom, eat or even sit. We could not do anything. When we got in, they searched us and when we got inside, we saw people with accessories that were forbidden in the regulation, like: camouflaged print clothes or big bags.
The stage was very far away and the screen was of poor quality.
The organization of the "Dangerous Woman Tour" could have been better.
Thanks for listening!
OMG,ilysm Ari, you mean so much to me you don't even know how much you mean to me and how much I love you ❣️. But there's kinda something I have to tell you!!!
Well my parents don't like me listening to you and I want them to like you so I can get your merch and go to one of your concerts finally. Even my sister's don't like you as much as I do,they all say that I watch you too much... I'm afraid that one day they won't let me watch you anymore. But I have nothing to worry about cuz I'm bout' to be a 18yrs. So they can tell me what to do anymore.
But Ari pls help me.... Idk how,but could you pls help me. I'm an Arianator and want to go to at least one of your concerts or t least finally meet you one day.
The show was incredible. She is the most talented person with the voice like an angel. One of my dream came true. She sang live with backtracks but an live band. The dance moves were flawless and the outfits stunning. Of course her make up too:). I'll go to another concert if she's coming to germany. The songs were so cool, but I think that she could took more of the TY,N album or dangerous women. So and one more thing.. the prebands were a little bit boring bc idk social house was fine and there are so cool but Ella May was a bit boring. She's a good singer but the show was....
But idc. I saw my idol live!!!
Best concert I have ever been to. Ariana is my absolute inspiration for everything and she is so strong and brave regardless of everything she has been through. She made everyone at the concert smile and have a blast. She has the voice of an angel and made sure to not let anyone down. if I were Ariana's mum, I would be more than beyond proud of all her achievements. I had the most magical time and I hope to meet Ariana one day.
Ps: I LOVE YOU SO MUCH ARIANA AND THANK YOU FOR BEING THE MOST AMAZING ROLE MODEL FOR ALL GIRLS OUT THERE AND FOR ME. I HAD THE BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE!!!
Love you dangerous woman xxx

Billboard Woman of the Year Ariana Grande: ‘There’s Not Much I’m Afraid of Anymore’
Struck by loss, Grande made the best and most widely embraced music of her career. Owning her sadness and her strength, she exemplifies the unshakable spirit of the artists recognized in Billboard's…

“Woo! It’s like, ‘I told y’all!’”
Ariana Grande is milly rocking in her seat behind the massive mixing console at Los Angeles’ Record Plant studio, a wide grin revealing the single dimple in her left cheek. Her new single, “Thank U, Next,” will not officially become her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 for another three days, but its explosive success is already making headlines. For Grande, the milestone is especially meaningful. It’s the exact kind of music she has wanted to make all along.
“It’s a Tommy Brown single!” she exclaims, hitting the arm of her chair for emphasis. Brown, a producer and songwriter, has been working with Grande since her 2013 debut, Yours Truly , and Grande is positively giddy at the prospect of their shared musical breakthrough. “I can’t believe it but, like, so can. It’s me and my besties tipsy off champagne — and me with a broken heart — just letting it out and having fun. I love this more than any other song I’ve ever put out.”

Ariana Grande: Photos From the 2018 Woman Of The Year Cover Shoot
That kind of joy has been tough to come by in the past few months for Billboard ’s Woman Of The Year, despite the fact that she has never had more career momentum. Grande’s fourth album, Sweetener , became her third No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in August, breaking streaming records while earning critical acclaim. So far it has produced two top 10 singles on the Hot 100, with a third, “Breathin,” now at No. 13. But while she was in the middle of promoting the project, her dear friend, collaborator and ex-boyfriend Mac Miller died from an accidental overdose. Just over a month later, her whirlwind engagement to comedian Pete Davidson ended.
On this November afternoon, it’s still too soon for Grande to talk about what has happened in anything other than broad strokes. “I’m really lucky and really unlucky at the same time,” says the 25-year-old.
To sing about it, though, is another story. Not long after Miller’s death, Grande started spending all of her time with her closest friends and collaborators, including Brown, recording a new album (which she says will also be called Thank U, Next ) at a studio across the street from her New York apartment. Though she has been in therapy since she was just a kid coping with her parents’ divorce — and is quick to espouse its benefits — right now the most healing comes when she’s standing behind a mic.
“When I felt myself saying, ‘’Cause her name is Ari,’ I knew it was a special line, but part of me was like, ‘Oh, my God, that’s kind of corny,’” says Grande, referring to the “Thank U, Next” lyric, a declaration of self-love. She tucks her bare legs inside a light-blue hoodie that reads “Beau Souci” (French for “beautiful worry”) and wraps her arms around them. “But the other part of me was like, ‘That’s beautiful and I need to keep it in.’ I know that once I put something into a song, then it’s real.”

Fittingly, the control room is decked out like a refuge: a small bouquet of white flowers, a single candle, a light projecting water ripples onto the ceiling. Grande, sporting an extension-less version of her signature ponytail, sips from a Starbucks iced soy latte while animatedly chatting about the music she has been working on — the only thing she’s really interested in discussing, the only thing that matters to her right now. As it turns out, a series of tragedies has given the star two unexpected gifts: the freedom to channel her hurt into the most raw and untempered music of her career, and the audacity to buck the pop music establishment — which, as Grande will note more quickly than anyone, is particularly entrenched when it comes to women.
She had the talent: the four-octave range and effortless vocal agility that led Gloria Estefan , after hearing the 8-year-old Grande sing “My Heart Will Go On” at a cruise-ship karaoke night, to tell her she was gifted. She had the support system: her close-knit family, familiar to anyone who follows the singer on social media. And she had the work ethic, performing in public regularly before the age of 10 and on Broadway by age 15. “When I was 6 years old, I just kind of decided that’s what I’m going to do with my life, period,” says Grande, who grew up in Boca Raton, Fla. “I manifested it. I knew I would. There was never really a doubt in my mind.”
The singer proceeded to do all she could to reach superstardom, and logged time in the teeny-bopper trenches at Nickelodeon. In 2011, she signed with Republic Records; not long after, she met Mac Miller. He was 20 and she was 19, so naturally they first talked on Twitter. The pair became fast friends, and she invited him to do a verse on her first album’s lead single, 2013’s bouncy ’90s throwback “The Way.” Grande told Billboard at the time that Miller was giving her Pro Tools pointers as they recorded. She added, “If you want to motivate Mac Miller to do anything, just bake cookies.”
Now, she looks back on the song as the first time she really captured her own musical style, what she had been searching for while growing up idolizing India.Arie . “When we made ‘The Way,’ I was like, ‘Oh, wow, I’m onto something here,’” says Grande. Her face dims slightly; just before this interview, she was working on a new song, which, when she plays it for me later, I realize is about Miller. “It felt like, ‘I should do this forever.’”
“The Way” reached No. 9 on the Hot 100, and like the rest of her debut, it holds up remarkably well. Babyface , one of the album’s producers, helped legitimize Grande’s long-held R&B aspirations. Nevertheless, when she released Yours Truly , Grande was still viewed as a preteen idol, thanks to her history on kiddie TV and diminutive size (she’s exactly 5 feet tall). So on her next two albums, she went even bigger, employing Max Martin and pursuing the kinds of pop hits that would make her undeniable to any listener.
Every Movie Scene in Ariana Grande's 'Thank U, Next' Video
“We started at home base — me,” Grande says of Yours Truly , “and then we went in this place where I kind of played the game for a little bit, and did the big, big, big pop records. Then we slowly started incorporating my soul back into it — and that’s where we’ve landed again with ‘Thank U, Next.’”
Grande has put in the work, done everything that was asked of her — all the tiny compromises that went along with playing the game — and kept her nose clean (with the exception of a little doughnut glaze, which she erased from the public’s memory with a cleverly self-deprecating sketch on one of the best Saturday Night Live hosting debuts in recent memory). She has hit songs and high Pitchfork ratings, to say nothing of her devoted fans, the Arianators. Grande’s late-night TV appearances — routine promotional stops for most stars — are events, thanks to her natural sense of comic timing and gift for impressions both sung and spoken (Google her doing Jennifer Coolidge). She followed all the rules, and arrived at what seemed like the top.
The singer has no regrets. “I got myself to a place where I would be able to do things like drop a surprise record and have it be the biggest single I’ve ever had,” she says now. But five years into her career, she hadn’t yet had a No. 1 Hot 100 song, and hadn’t found the ubiquity that she knew deep down she deserved.
Then, on May 22, 2017, a suicide bomber killed 23 people and injured 139 outside the arena in Manchester, England, where Grande had just finished performing as part of her Dangerous Woman Tour. Many of the victims were children.
Within weeks Grande was back, not just onstage but in Manchester, visiting survivors in the hospital and hosting the One Love Manchester benefit, which helped raise 23 million pounds (about $29 million) for the victims. She released her live rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from the benefit, during which she broke down in tears — though she still finished the performance — and donated the proceeds to the Red Cross. “Our response to this violence must be to come closer together, to help each other, to love more, to sing louder and to live more kindly and generously than we did before,” she wrote at the time.
She did exactly that with the album that followed, this summer’s Sweetener , an optimistic paean to her own healing; there was no dwelling on tragedy, only gentleness and positivity. The first single was titled “No Tears Left to Cry,” and the album concluded with the tender “Get Well Soon,” a five-minute, 22-second tribute to the Manchester victims. Meanwhile, she had found new contentment outside the studio with SNL star Davidson, in a relationship that she happily flaunted despite the tabloid frenzy that enveloped them both.
In a tweet a month ago, Grande summed up her feelings on what has happened since: “Remember when i was like hey i have no tears left to cry and the universe was like HAAAAAAAAA bitch u thought.”
This afternoon, Grande is often near tears, a fact she readily acknowledges. “I just hope you’re OK with me crying, because that’s not going to not happen,” she says, laughing even as she’s tearing up in the midst of talking about how she has coped with so much tragedy in such a short span of time. “I can’t even say ‘Good morning’ to anyone without crying.” The blessing, for both the singer and her fans, is the music. “I guess there’s not much I’m afraid of anymore,” she says, her normally silky voice tightening. “When life tries you with such serious shit so many times, your priorities change. I don’t give a shit. I just want to be happy and healthy — one day — and make music.”
Where she’s currently sitting — behind the mixing console — is just about the only place Grande feels like she has control. And she is, in her own words, a control freak. Though she won’t say that she has perfect pitch (“People tell me I do, but I’m not going to sit here and be like, ‘Yes, I do’”), when talking about her music, Grande betrays a craftsman’s obsession with arrangements and vocal harmonies. “I’ll hear something that’s on one track out of, like, a thousand in a session and be emailing the engineer about it,” she says. Martin and Pharrell Williams both let her “steer,” which is one of the reasons she has worked with them repeatedly. But not every man she has shared a studio with has been as willing to cede the reins.
“I’ve politely walked out of sessions before,” says Grande. “It has happened. I’m a small girl. People tend to underestimate that. And then I sit down and comp my own vocals and can produce my own session, and they’re like” — here she adopts an excellent impersonation of a dopey man — “‘Oh, I didn’t know you could do that.’ I’m like, ‘Believe it or not, there are plenty of tiny women that can do this.’” This is the Grande who digs for deep cuts, covering songs by eclectic bassist Thundercat and exchanging Instagram DMs with legendary jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval (the pair did a track together alongside Williams).
This is also the Grande who has been vocal about fighting sexism. Her recent single “God Is a Woman” might be the most obvious example, but even in 2015, in a Notes app manifesto that quoted Gloria Steinem, she was critiquing the media’s habit of defining famous women by their relationship status.
“I would just love to see a chart with as many women on top as men,” she says. “It’s just so male-dominated. It’s so easy for them. There are so many unbelievable female artists out there that try so much harder.”
Despite the industry barriers Grande is breaking down — she’s the only artist ever to have the lead single from each of her first four albums debut in the top 10 of the Hot 100, and the first woman in three years to have a single debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 — she sometimes feels like she’s still pushing against an audience that wants her to fit into specific stereotypes. “They’re unable to accept the fact that women are a million things, and not just two,” she says. “You can be adorable and brilliant. You can be friendly and silly, and yet strong and indestructible. You can be professional and present and also sexual and fun.
“My dream has always been to be — obviously not a rapper, but, like, to put out music in the way that a rapper does. I feel like there are certain standards that pop women are held to that men aren’t. We have to do the teaser before the single, then do the single, and wait to do the preorder, and radio has to impact before the video, and we have to do the discount on this day, and all this shit. It’s just like, ‘Bruh, I just want to fucking talk to my fans and sing and write music and drop it the way these boys do. Why do they get to make records like that and I don’t?’ So I do and I did and I am, and I will continue to.” Grande pauses briefly, growing serious.
“And if it doesn’t work out the way ‘Thank U, Next’ did, that’s fine too! It is so exciting to see something be received well. That’s a beautiful thing. But it’s even more beautiful to be honest and just do something.” She sniffs, her eyes dampening. “To drop a record on a Saturday night because you feel like it, and because your heart’s going to explode if you don’t — to take back your narrative.”
Grande starts to cry in earnest, carefully wiping away tears so as not to smudge her winged eyeliner. “I don’t want to do what people tell me to do, I don’t want to conform to the pop star agenda. I want to do it on my own terms from now on. If I want to tour two albums at once, I’m going to tour two albums at once. If I want to drop a third album while I’m on tour [in 2019], I’ll do that too! Please. [“Thank U, Next” production duo] Social House is my opening act — you don’t think we’re going to have a studio on the bus? That we’re not going to be making records on the road? Of course we are. I want to be able to do what is authentic and honest and natural. It’s the only way that I’ve been able to survive.” She puts her face in her hands, resting her fingertips — adorned with perfectly manicured white oval nails — on her forehead.
Talking explicitly about the men in Grande’s life is a non-starter. She still loves all her songs, even “Pete Davidson.” (She also sent the Davidson in question “Thank U, Next” before releasing it: “I wasn’t going to blindside anybody,” she says.) The wound left by Miller’s death is, unsurprisingly, still raw. She expects Thanksgiving will be particularly hard, since she had spent the past few holidays in Pittsburgh with Miller’s family. At this point, these are the kinds of details that Grande already knows will be A1 on every gossip site. Her rise to fame has been punctuated by a series of public romances, which she writes off as a side effect of her workaholism. “This is how I meet people — I can’t just, like, meet someone at a bar,” she says. “I live fast and full-out, and I make mistakes, and I learn from them and I’m grateful no matter what happens.”
Ariana Grande's 'Thank U Next' Clip Gives Movies a Big Spike on Amazon Prime Video
Grande has no plans to take a break, despite the fact that she has been working more or less constantly since the beginning of her career. When we meet, in early November, she’s in the midst of finishing Thank U, Next ; prepping the video for the single; and preparing for her Sweetener World Tour, which starts in March 2019. “I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of the artist I can be, and I just want to keep growing and practicing and getting better,” she says. “I never want to get lazy.”
The new album is Grande’s therapy and her catharsis. She invites her friends and collaborators — Brown, Social House, Victoria Monét , Tayla Parx and Doug Middlebrook — back into the control room to listen to it. Brown pops a bottle of pink Veuve Clicquot. “I don’t think I’ve ever consumed more alcohol than I have in the past month,” jokes Grande, cheered by their presence. “I am champagne. You know how people say we’re 60 percent water? I’m 60 percent pink Veuve Clicquot.”
Thank U, Next was mostly written in a week, with the people she’s toasting in the control room, and recorded in two weeks. Now comes the polishing phase and the addition of some tracks with Martin and his team. It was the product of a lot of “feminine energy and champagne and music and laughter and crying. This [album’s] not particularly uplifting,” she says. “A lot of it sounds really upbeat, but it’s actually a super sad chapter.”
The music is defiant — deep, bass-driven bangers with trap beats alternating with airy, sad ballads — and aesthetically more adventurous than anything she has ever released. Some of the lyrics are so unambiguously personal and gutting that even if the singer were up for talking about them, most questions would be redundant. But one of the more upbeat tunes, “7 Rings,” has a backstory Grande is happy to discuss.
“It was a… challenging fall day in New York,” she begins, cracking up. “Me and my friends went to Tiffany’s together, just because we needed some retail therapy. You know how when you’re waiting at Tiffany’s they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring.” She flashes a diamond ring on her right hand; Monét and Parx are wearing them as well. “That’s why we have these, and that’s where the song idea came from.”
She goes to her phone and presses “play,” and a party-ready twist on “My Favorite Things” booms out of the speakers. Grande whispers some asides to her friends, who are bopping along to the song. Then she starts to dance around the room in her bare feet, alone and smiling.

Ariana Grande review – crowd-pleasing anthems of female resilience
O2 Arena, London Grande’s vocals are given the spotlight in a show that’s refreshingly understated ... for a gig involving a neon limousine, cascading bank notes and a re-creation of The Last Supper
A riana Grande first appears at the centre of a tableau of dancers based on Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper – albeit a last supper at which the diners suddenly start climbing on the table, waving their thong-clad bums in the air and pretending to cop off with each other. It’s both a striking opening and an anomaly, a rare moment of visual spectacle in a show that feels remarkably understated and restrained. Of course, such things are relative: it’s as subtle as any gig that involves a neon-pink limousine rising up through the stage while fake bank notes rain down on fans who’ve shelled out real cash – the best part of £250 – to stand in the front rows can be. But, by arena-sized pop standards, the Sweetener tour is pretty much the last word in discretion. No relentless son-et-lumière bombardment, no eye-popping special effects, just a couple of giant globes on to which tasteful footage of the sun and night sky is projected. Even the stage-side screens are of a reasonable size.
Attention is focused on Grande herself, which is quite a gamble. As pop stars go, she’s not a particularly charismatic figure. It’s something she’s been smart enough to paper over with a series of easily identifiable and copyable looks, an old trick that has been largely forgotten in pop’s latterday stampede towards girl/boy-next-door “relatability”. Tonight, though the rabbit ears that were once her trademark are long gone, the high ponytail is more immense than ever and her fans scream every time she flicks it with her fingers.
Anyone not fully obsessed with Grande’s tonsorial arrangements might find that there are moments where the show lags, at least at first: the vast majority of her party anthem hits are shunted towards the end of the set, while the opening concentrates on tracks from 2018’s Sweetener and this year’s Thank U, Next . There’s nothing wrong with this material, but the soupy acoustics of a venue this size don’t do a great deal for the subtleties of REM or Needy . Nevertheless, Grande can really sing. The show opens with her performing The Four Seasons’ doo-woop-y 1961 hit An Angel Cried a capella. She posseses a falsetto that she can turn up to full Minnie-Ripperton-doing-Lovin’-You levels, a sound that’s simultaneously hugely impressive and nerve-jangling enough to make you grateful she deploys it quite sparingly. It says something about arena-sized pop shows that the sound of someone singing live feels striking.
Meanwhile, anyone hoping to hear her open her heart up goes home unhappy. Stage chat is at a minimum and fixed firmly to the standard inquiries about whether everyone is having a good time. The only thing you could take as a reference to events of the last two years, the terrorist attack on her Manchester Arena show and the death of former boyfriend Mac Miller among them, is the unexplained appearance of a clip from the 1996 film The First Wives Club : a movie that, beneath the gags, is ultimately about female resilience.
If that’s the show’s message, then fans seem to have got it. For all the high-pitched hysteria afforded the hits – Thank U, Next ; Dangerous Woman ; Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored – the most vociferous response is generated by Breathin’ , a song about overcoming panic attacks and anxiety. It’s proof that in a world of pop songs filled with self-help mantras, Grande’s have clearly hit home. That’s what people are here for.
At the O2 Arena, London , 17-20 August and 15-16 October.
