6.5 any good in a 33' 1995 Safari motorhome?

I am considering a 1995 Safari Trek 33' GM6.5, pusher motorhome. It has the 6.5 and Allison 542 4 speed trans. They will let it go cheap because 6.5's in Treks have a bad reputation for overheating and blowing engines. Also, said motorhome is billed as a "fixer upper", which I can do. The one in question, has 53000 miles and a rebuilt GM 6.5., new radiator and hoses. If it dosent have the daul T-stat, high flow H2O pump upgrade, I'll install them. What do you folks think about this combo? Will it be so slow as to drive me insane? Can I make it reliable, for trips of 8000 miles, around the USA? I'm looking for a bargian, but don't want to get stuck? Anyone ever seen/driven one of these? Input appriciated!  

The 6.5 is a good light duty diesel engine. The key words are "light duty". That said, I would have my reservations about its longevity as a pusher for something that big continuously, even with all the upgrades that you could throw at it. The size and weight are not the only concerns, you have to look at the aerodynamics. It would be pushing a barn door around everywhere. My $0.02 worth.  

I was looking at the same model MH and decided to go with a 5er. The thinking was that I can still move the 5er with another truck in the event of truck problems. I think I would have gone with the isuzu model. Basically I think people just burn them up. You need to install gauges, watch them and drive accordingly. It's just like towing a heavy load only with restricted cooling. I can't say about power, I didn't get as far as test driving one. It does seem that you could improve air flow with vents somehow if it's a problem. Seems there was a driveline angle problem, not sure. I might add that I work or have worked with a few people that have or had older motorhomes. They are staying in a motel because their motorhomes need work on them. The camper trailer guys are staying in theirs. Nothing against motorhomes, just something to think about.  

If it's cheap, and you can't live without it, a Cummins 5.9 or 8.3 12v turbodiesel conversion might be the ticket - good power, not maintenance intensive, runs cool, very good economy, and guaranteed to twist yer axles in-two, if you ever feel the need - bolts right up to the Allison, btw, or you can go with the Dodge non-electric 47RH auto 4spd overdrive. And it will pull in overdrive.  

A buddy has a 35 ft bluebird, and older front engine with CAT 3208 td. What a beast. Seeing him working all the other little things on that older mh, he's glad the basic powertrain is relatively hassle-free. he's been all over the US and that 3208 works hard too, i'd hate to see a 6.5 under all those conditions while continuosly highly loaded.  

Someone I was talking with that has been camping quite a bit, says that the powertrain is the downfall of the "camper" setup. Trailer/5'er setup, replace the powertrain as needed (vehicle change out). Plus the convience off park it and drive out with camper left on site...  

I would buy it if I thought I could put the cummins 5.9 in it, otherwise, I have serious doubts.

Sorry I took so long to respond. Thank you all for your input. I will have to think about all you said. Maybe I should go back to pulling a toyhauler, with my 2000 Ford Excursion 7.3 diesel. I figurd the MOHO would be nicer, on long trips.  

I don't think I would rule out the 6.5 in a motorhome. A motorhome is much more aerodynamic (and thats what you need the hp to overcome)than a PU, big 5th wheel combo and no more wieght. A pusher unit will also be geared better for the job than a PU. If heating is a problem in the motorhome that is easy to fix with the 97+ updates and maybe a cheap intercooler like some of the guys on this forum have made for around 400$ and hp and dependablity can be increased like any PU could be with better exhaust, intake, mechanical boost control so on. As long as you have gauges on it your not going to hurt it. It will never be a rocket going up a hill but whats the hurry your on vacation and usally when your in the hills thats were all the senery is anyway. When it comes to RV's there is no perfect unit everyone has thier advantages and disadvantages. If the engine is in good condition and check it out very well, like no bubbles in the cooling system so on IMHO I would give it some consideration. Fuel economy will be nearly twice that of a 454 or ford v10 of those years. Check to see if the engine is computer controlled or mechanical with spring operated wastegate and mechanical IP. The mechanical engines are more dependable and cost less to operate, a lot less replacement parts needed, and a little easier to make hp. What do they mean by rebuilt, do they have receipts, when was it done? Will you be pulling anything behind the motorhome?

Thanks for the replies! The motorhome is a 1995 diesel pusher with a Jasper long block GM 6.5. Seller claims new radiator and hoses. Has 53,000 miles. Long block was installed in April 2006, after it had a cooling leak, on a test drive! Warranted to April 2007. It's 2000 miles from me and I have not seen it yet. I might pull a small dirt bike trailer. I assume it is electriclly controled injection, being a 1995 chassis. If I buy it, I'm planning on installing (myself, former auto-mechanic)the 1997 cooling upgrades, a 4" mandrell bent downpipe, the ceramic coated pipe, manifold to turbo pipe<maybe>, gauges, some kind of free'er flowing air intake and having a good exaust installed. It's being offered cheap, because it's been on the consignment lot 1 1/2 years, or so. This due to it's being a "fixer upper', and the bad 6.5 rep, in the motorhome community. It has an Allison AT-542 4 speed, which is a NON lock-up convertor, trans) Asking price is $16,000. I'm looking for a diesel pusher, on a gasser budget. Thanks for your patience, this is a hard decision, specially since I have to fly. to look at it!  

Jasper only has 1 thing going for them that would be their warranty. i have installed dozens of them. many onder warranty. if i saw a car or truck with 1 i would be uneasy about the engine. i bought my fathers truck with 50,000 miles on the engine 210,000 on evry thing else. i rebuilt it 10,000 after i got it. the cost was $4000. that was with me doing all the work. and parts below holesale. when my engine failed i was towing a 5th wheel, watching all my gages and letting them decide how i could drive. a pusher motorhome is to big for a 6.5  

I wouldn't be any more leary of a Jasper than an O.E. unit.  

$16,000 is way to high for a 6.5 equiped motor home in my opinion. Only reason to got to a 6.5 is if one can get a good price. Read $3000 to $5000 as so being a good price. While the 6.5 can perform, it will not be a stellar performer. The large weight and large frontal area will make any 33 footer with a 6.5 a dog going up hills. Even high speed on the flats will put a decent strain on the engine. Watching gauges, cooling and exhaust upgrades will help. For the right price I would buy a 6.5 motorhome (though preferable less thatn 33 feet). For $16,000 one can get a 3208 equiped motor home or various other "better" diesel engines in a used motorhome.  

i agree with craig, it would be a rip off at 16 g. when they say fixxer upper, that is a dead give away as to why it is sitting on the lot over 18 months. even though you can do the work yourself take it to a professional shop (subject to an acceptable repairs estimate ) to see what they would charge to fixxer upperize it. i'm assuming wood rot. then take the estimate to the seller and use it to give a low, much lower an offer on it. i had a 1978 fixxer upper with a 440 and it cost twice what it cost me to go any distance versus my truck and camper and boat and bike. and when i went to buy a camper i was going to trade it in. they offered a 1000.00 sold it privately for 3g and bought the camper after knocking 2500.00 off their price. came out 4500.00 ahead. i think..........  

6.5 pusher would be a dog. Pass it up. No way that thing can climb a grade without the EGT going sky high. Get something else. Wonder why the motor has been chaged? Now you know.  

A few facts 1) PU + large 5th wheel = 18000lb, 2) diesel pusher approx = 18000lbs 3) areodynamics of diesel pusher = 1 brick 4) areodynamics of PU + 5th wheel = 1.5 bricks 5) EGT = to size of right foot not size of hill 6) 170000$ = new replacement pusher 7) 100000$ = price of the unit new 8) 16000$ = to expensive for a mid 90s pusher diesel (NOT!) condition would dictate 9) 3208 = early 80's cement mixer 10) 3208 in a motorhome = hens teeth 11) 3208hp = well preped 6.5's hp 12) thousands = the number of people that use thier 6.5's to pull large 5th wheels. 13) 6.5 is piece of **** engine = opinion of vast majority population 14) 6.5 is good engine with proper prep. = opinion of most people on diesel place forum.

As stated above, the vehicle that you are viewing is a 2000 Fleetwood Bounder 39 Z with huge slide out room. This coach is powered by a Cummins ISB 5.9 engine with Allison automatic transmission. Heavy duty Freightliner chassis makes for a great package! The engine runs good with no excessive smoke, noises or issues. The Cummins turbo diesel engine proves plenty of power and "pep". No issues evident with the engine. The transmission shifts properly through all gear ranges. No slipping or damage found. No issues evident with transmission. The steering is tight and responsive. No excessive play or lash. Nice tight feel at all speeds. No issues evident with steering system. The heavy duty suspension gives the coach a great ride. No excessive body roll or sway. The coach sits level. No issues evident with with the suspension system. The complete drivetrain seems to be in good shape as well. We found no excessive vibration or lash. It has no excessive noises etc. No issues evident. The coach looks to have been well taken care of. The tires are in decent shape overall. 80-90% on average of tread. No major dry rot or cracking evident, however, at least 2 have some very mild cracking. The unit was just driven approx 300 miles at highway speeds. It did fine. I personally drove this coach in towing a vehicle, and it did great. Mechanically, the coach seems to be in good condition for the year. Now that the mechanics are beind us, I will go into detail about the overall condition of the exterior and interior. Exterior-As you can see in the pics, the coach is in good shape for the year. Keep in mind, this unit is 14 years old. It is not perfect, nor should it be. This coach DOES NOT have the typical de-lam like you will find on many of the full fibergalss units this age. The stripes are original and in decent shape overall. Some slight fade and cracking, typical of the age. All main glass, lenses and such are in good shape as well. Both front windshiled(s) are in nice shape. The paint looks good overall. It has a few scratches and "normal" blemishes. As you can see in the photos, I have taken shots of all the major blemishes. Again, the coach is in good shape for the age, but it is not perfect. Keep in mind this is a 14 year old coach. Interior-The interior is overall in great shape. It is VERY rare for me to use the word great on any of these repo units, however, this one is very nice for the age. Everything inside shows only minor wear. All seating surfaces are in nice shape. The carpet is in good/average shape throughout. The interior roof surface is clean, with no water damage spots or stains. It has no foul odors or smells. As you can see in the pics, this is the center isle rear queen floor plan. The interior has loads of useable space. Lots of storage as well. This unit will sleep 5-6 with ease. Tons of closet/storage space. Large enclosed shower with sit down tub. Way to many features to list. Overall, the interior is in great shape. I Will not go into great detail about the interior, as the photos speak for themselves. Generator-This coach has an Onan 7500 quiet diesel gen-set. It runs and powers excellent. I ran the unit at full load for approx 3 hours with no problems. AC Units-This coach has 2 roof top air conditioning systems. Both units work great. The dash/cab AC has not been tested. Roof-The coach has the original rubber roof. It is in nice shape overall. I found no major damage etc. The roof surface is solid. It looks to have been maintained properly. No leaks found with the roof. Nice shape overall. Exterior Bays- Tons of useable space. Basement storage. Rust and Corrosion-No major rust or corrosion. Slide-Out Room-yes Jacks----YES. HWH Leveling System. Works great. FRIDGE-Works great. MILES-The miles are actual, but due to South Carolina law it may be marked EXEMPT. BOOKS AND MANUALS-Yes. In closing, this is a rather rare coach in good condition. It is not a new unit, nor should it be. As the title states, this is a bank repo unit. What this means for you is it is your chance to get a good coach at a great price. It also means, that it many cases it will need some TLC. I disclose all that I am aware of, but this is by no means a warranty. We do not perform a 200 point inspection on these repo units. Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

• Guidance area: 55 16 31N, 38 30 38E

1984 converted to the S-300PT (SA-10) with three independent battalions:

• 1st independent Anti-Aircraft Missile Battalion (Bessonovo, Moscow Oblast) - 55 09 34N, 38 22 26E
• 2nd independent Anti-Aircraft Missile Battalion and HQ (Stepanshchino, Moscow Oblast) - 55 15 31N, 38 32 23E
