ONE DAY DOG SLED TRIPS

If you are in the Denali National Park area, and looking for a fantastic Winter tour, take a one day dog sled trip!  A dog sled day trip is $140-395 per person for 1-4 hour trip. We have over 35 years of guiding experience in the area we are guiding, in and around Denali National Park in the Stampede Valley.  This experience has allowed us to offer the best choices for our guests.  Day trips are run directly out of our kennel at EarthSong Lodge, so you can meet the dogs and watch hookup after we gear you up with our cold weather gear.  All trips are interactive with the opportunity to drive the dog team while sharing a sled with a guide.  You can actually drive the guide sled for part of the trip, instead of just sitting in a sled basket or on a tag (pulled) sled behind the main sled.  There is no better way to get a real exposure to dog sledding on a day trip anywhere!  Length of trips and start of guiding season may be dictated by adequate snow cover.  While most day trips are with smaller groups of 1-3, at times we can do trips with larger groups.  Children are welcome upon review.  We run our dog sled tours for varied amounts of time:

A convenient hotel pickup kicks off this fun three-hour tour to the Wolf's Den Kennel, home to Iditarod finisher Mark Santos, his family, and their 60 or so sled dogs. The kennel is in the small outpost of Cantwell. It takes about 30 minutes to drive there, but between your tour guide's narration and the scenery it goes by quickly.

All part of the grand Alaska adventure.

Puppies are there to greet you when you arrive at the kennel. Playful bundles of furry cuteness now, these young Alaskan Huskies will take their turn in the harness in a few years. You'll learn about the raising and training of canine athletes from their experienced handlers, and then see the adult dogs in action during a training run demonstration. From here you'll move inside for a presentation about the Iditarod Sled Dog Race itself. This "Last Great Race on Earth" is the pinnacle of Alaskan sled dog racing, a 1,000-mile fete that's fascinating to learn about from a musher whose done it.

Along with tales from the Iditarod and more time to meet the sled dogs, you'll also get a taste of the Alaska lifestyle in general. Rebuilding the homestead, living in a log cabin without running water, planning out grocery runs over 200 miles away. It's all part of the grand Alaska adventure! The three-hour tour concludes with a return narrated trip to the Denali Park area.

The DogGoneIt Denali Kennel tour starts with a pickup in the Denali Park area and includes about 1.5 hours of narrated transportation and 1.5 hours at the sled dog kennel.

Crazy Dog Kennels, (dba Alaska Wild), operates a variety of activities for the entire family -- both during the winter and summer months.  Winter activities include something as simple as a walk on snowshoes into the Alaskan forest to see what the wildlife tracks have written into the snow.  Or--the more adventuresome can experience a snowmobile expedition far into the outback.  Try your hand at catching a trout through the ice from one of our heated ice fishing tents.  Explore the underside of a glacier and see the incredible crystals of an ice cave.  During the summer months; we offer August Denali Highway informational tours that explore the high country of the Denali Highway.  October will find excellent photo opportunities for those who might wish to get some moose close-ups during the breeding season.  John Schandelmeier will be your knowledgeable guide.  A life-long Alaskan, John has spent his lifetime in the outback of Alaska.

Snowshoeing

Take a walk into the taiga near timberline.  read the text nature's creatures have left in the snow.  snowshoe hares have passed their peak in alaska's interior, however we can still find the tracks of these snow white bunnies near the kennel.  sharptail grouse, coyotes, fox and lynx also call this area home.  moose and caribou are common sights in our area.  we can always find a moose to photograph .

$45 pp.   2 person minimum

Snowmobile Charters

Take a trip further off the beaten  path  our snowmobile charters are tailored to fit your needs. if you want to travel cross-country to a specific destination or just go on a ride under the aurora; we can do it, don’t want to walk to an ice cave ride in comfort in our 10’ travel sled. castner ice cave is a common destination —- but it is crowded there are other less accessible glacier ice cave locations. the gulkana glacier and denali highway trips are also on our menu. the chances are —- if you have a place to go; we have already been there. for the adventuresome we can do drop-offs and pick up. our fifty plus years of experience in the alaska range and on snowmobiles give you the comfort of knowing you are in good hands. call 907-388-6039 or text 907-750-2619 for specific pricing and availability. e-mail; [email protected] or [email protected], we do not rent snowmobiles; charters will ride in our travel sled which carries 2-5 people depending on snow conditions..

We offer charters to the Gulkana Glacier. Gulkana, as is the case with all glaciers, has an ice cave. It is not as spectacular as Castner, but rarely will we encounter another person. Gulkana Glacier is approximately an 8 mile (one-way) trip from the highway.

We also provide travel to the Black Rapids Glacier. The ice cave at Black Rapids is good. Black Rapids is a 6 mile ride from the highway. Check with us a few days in advance on either of these trips…… Ice caves can close up during the winter due to overflow. The Black Rapids trip is subject to high winds and rough traveling conditions, it is not for everyone.

Other glaciers in the area may also be visited. Email [email protected] for information.

Snow conditions in Isabel Pass, (south of Delta where the Castner Ice Caves are located), are excellent. Due to a very high snowpack in the winter of 2022-23, glacial rivers ran high this past summer. Many of the Ice caves underwent dramatic changes. The popular Castner cave foot traffic remains at a high level. Castner has hosted in excess of 5000 visitors the for the past three winters. March and April are the peak months. We do snowmobile charters in the area for those who are either unable, or prefer not to walk. The weather in the Pass is habitually windy, so please prepare. There is not always a decent walking trail into the Castner Ice caves, so bring appropriate snowshoes or skis. Tha distance from the parking area to the Glacier is just over a mile. -20 and winds of 15-30mph. is not uncommon.

Ice Fishing

Try your luck fishing through the ice.  some luck, a little skill and a lot of patience are the requirements for a successful ice fishing trip.  remember; the fish have to come to you  our area lakes have rainbow and lake trout, arctic char and landlocked salmon.  heated ice fishing tents are provided when the temperatures are frigid or the wind is a bit too much, february 2024—- fishing is beginning to improve in the deeper lakes. rainbow trout and landlocked silver salmon are biting, though fishing can be hit and miss still. check in for current fishing information. [email protected].

tourist fishing 22.jpg

January 2024; Ice Cave access is good at this time. There is decent snow near all of the more accessible caves. However, safety is aLways our first concern. Keep up with recent updates on this page. The popular Castner Cave entrance collasped this past spring. The Cave still exists but the entry location has changed. One should not just walk blandly into the underside of a glacier… Also be aware that the present entry location is on the edge of an avalanche zone.

There are many ice caves in the alaska range. most of alaska's glaciers have some sort of ice cave.  the summer snow melt streams carve serpentine caverns under the ice.  incredible crystals form near the entrances.  venture further inside and marvel at the compressed clear ice.  one never knows what might be frozen into eternity under a glacier.  once, we found a long-frozen varying hare estimated to be over 1000 years old.  this tour is dependent on the season.  ice caves change every season and are commonly not available until december --- and usually well into april.  transportation to the ice caves varies depending on cave location.  most caves are located several miles from the highway. castner caves may be available. castner glacier is closer to the highway and offers relatively easy walking accessibility. s we no longer take dogteams to castner due to the high volume of foot traffic..

Other caves are available somewhat further off of the beaten path. Contact us for pricing.

tourist ice 33.jpg

Castner entrance 2021. 2023; This portion of the cave now only exists as an archway. Odds are good that this will colllapse by late June of 2023.

Wildlife opportunities.

Moose are almost always around and don’t mind photographers. The deep snow and ice of the winter of 2022 hit the population hard. However, we can always find some. Bison can be seen reliably. The Macomb caribou herd has spent much of this winter near the highway and have been readily visible from the highway system. Coyotes, fox and various grouse may be seen. Do not expect to see a wolf……unless luck is with you! text 907-750-2619 for more information

Fun and Exciting Things to Do in Denali National Park

D enali National Park and Preserve, located in south-central Alaska, is a six-million-acre site that attracts tourists for its recreational opportunities, which include facilities for camping, as well as hiking and cycling trails. The only service road that passes through Denali National Park is a 91-mile road that runs through the center of the park. Visitors also have a chance to observe wildlife specimens that include caribou, black bears, and golden eagles.

Denali National Park is about 240 miles north of Anchorage and about 120 miles south of Fairbanks. Denali covers more than 6 million acres and its best-known features are the 20,320 ft. high Mt. McKinley and the vast untouched wilderness surrounding it.

The park was established as a wildlife refuge in 1917 and since then millions of visitors have enjoyed its beauty. There are so many things to do in Denali National Park including a wide variety of activities for you to choose from which guarantees that you will have an unforgettable experience.

Things to Do in Denali National Park

Mt. mckinley.

Mt. McKinley, known as Denali by locals, is the highest peak in North America at an elevation of approximately 20,320 feet, according to Lanier Publishing International. This mountain was first sighted by European explorers in 1794 by George Vancouver. It was a major digging site for miners during the Klondike Gold Rush of the 19th century.

Mt. McKinley received its current name in 1897 when it was named after President William McKinley. The mountain has two summits: the North and South. The North summit, which stands at approximately 19,000 feet, was first reached in 1910, while the higher summit, the South, was reached in 1913. Although relatively few climbers aim for the mountain’s summit, many people regularly climb Mt. McKinley and take advantage of its hiking trails.

Wonder Lake

Wonder Lake is located 85 miles from the Denali National Park Visitor Center. Its only access is a five-hour ride on the park’s shuttle bus. The lake offers opportunities for boating activities and is surrounded by hiking trails and picnic areas. Wonder Lake also is a popular tent-camping spot and provides campers with lavatory facilities. The campgrounds offer scenic views of Mt. McKinley.

Mt. Healy Overlook Trail

The Mt. Healy Overlook Trail is a two-mile path that rises to an elevation of 1,700 feet, providing climbers with views of Denali Park’s entrance and the Nenana River Valley. The trail begins at the Murie Science and Learning Center. Hikers walk through various forest and tundra regions before reaching the top, which offers an opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife. The round-trip hiking excursion usually lasts four to five hours.

Toklat River Valley

The Toklat River Valley is accessed by a three-hour shuttle bus ride from the park’s Visitor Center and offers hiking trails and fishing opportunities in the Toklat River. Tent-camping sites also are available along the riverfront. But since the Toklat River may change its course during the summer months, access to this region of the park can be limited. Mountain climbing opportunities also are available at the nearby Mount Sheldon, which was named after one of the park’s original explorers, Charles Sheldon.

Things to Do in Denali National Park & Activities

Exploring Denali National Park can entail a day trip or an extended wilderness excursion. If you’re interested in wildlife, you can spend time quietly bird watching; more than 160 species of birds make their home at the park . If you’re looking for a more active experience, throw on a pair of snowshoes and a backpack with your camping gear . On and off the beaten path, opportunities for activity abound in Denali.

Parts of the park are off limits for personal vehicles to protect the untouched wilderness of Denali, which is why several tour companies offer bus tours that take you to restricted areas of the Denali for the best wildlife viewing the park has to offer. The highlights of the wildlife viewing include grizzly bears, black bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, and eagles. An experienced tour guide helps you to spot the fauna and tells you about the biology and geology of the region.

Flightseeing

The best way to see Mt. McKinley, the Grand Ascent, and the Cantwell Glacier is from an airplane flying above the glacier and the snow-covered peaks of Mt. McKinley. Tour companies also offer helicopter tours and some of them combine short hiking expeditions in the Denali National Park with the tour.

Sled Dog Kennel Tours

Sled dog racing and Alaskan Huskies are a tradition in Alaska. During the dog kennel tours, you will meet champion Iditarod race dogs, observe summer training activities and learn about the sport of sled dog racing.

Denali National Park has six established campgrounds, all of which are open in the summer for both tent and recreation vehicle camping; Riley Creek Campground remains open in the winter. For a less conventional experience, consider camping in the backcountry area south of the Alaska Range crest. Camp in any spot at least a half-mile away from the park road. Fires are not permitted in the park during the summer.

Hiking in Denali can be as adventurous as you’d like it to be. You can either stay on an established trail or venture out into the wilderness. Established trails stay close to the park road, and most begin at the visitor center. If you plan on hiking off-trail, park officials recommend that you take a shuttle bus into the park and get off wherever you’d like. Avoiding spruce forests and alder will expedite your travels through the park.

Mount McKinley and Mount Foraker are the most popular peaks in the park. Some climbing destinations require flying into the area, including Ruth Glacier and Eldridge Glacier. You can reach other peaks, including Mount Brooks, via the park road. Climbers attempting Mount McKinley and Mount Foraker must register with the park at least 60 days before their journey. Other climbers must only get a backcountry mountaineering permit.

You can explore all 92 miles of Denali Park Road via bicycle. The road is paved until mile 15, at which point it becomes graded gravel. A designated bike trail goes between the Denali Visitor Center and the Nenana River. If you want to turn your cycling trip into an overnight experience, you can camp in the park as long as your bicycle remains 25 yards away from the road once you establish your campsite.

Denali National Park is blanketed with snow during the winter, providing a canvas for cross-country skiing. You can ski on dog sled trails, along the park road, or create your own trail in the backcountry. Telemark downhill skiing and snowboarding are also permitted, but you should not travel into areas with avalanche hazards unless you have the proper training. Downhill skiers and snowboarders are encouraged to travel with a group.

Whitewater rafting in class I, II, III, and IV rapids on the Nenana River will surely not leave you dry. You paddle through some of the most beautiful portions of the Nenana River and you might even see glimpses of the Denali wildlife on your way down the river. Both family-friendly and daredevil tours are available.

Final Thoughts on Things to Do in Denali National Park

A handful of hiking trails begin either from or close to the Denali Visitors Center. You can either follow the trails or pick out your own path in the park. Park rangers also lead daily hikes to the park and teach you interesting facts about the park, including its flora and fauna and geology. In fundraising pitch, Iditarod planners say financial woes could jeopardize epic sled dog race

A man in a green jacket waves to fans on a street in downtown Anchorage Alaska.

The future of the “Last Great Race” is uncertain, officials said in an appeal to supporters. The message comes at a time when major Iditarod sponsors have dropped out, and inflation has increased the cost of participation.

On Tuesday, race officials  emailed  fans to say one of the race’s key fundraisers, its winter raffle, isn’t getting typical levels of support. With five days before the draw, only about 60% of the tickets have sold.

The email suggested the race may not happen next year if the tickets do not sell out. “This may sound dramatic, but it is absolutely the unfortunate truth,” organizers wrote.

“Without this fundraiser and the sale of these tickets, we would not be able to put this race on each year,” they wrote.

This week the race was dealt another blow when a state legislative committee nixed a $1.4 million funding request that race officials said would have buoyed the struggling endeavor.

On Monday, Rep. Andy Josephson, D-Anchorage,  proposed  a $1.4 million grant from the state budget to the Iditarod Trail Committee, which operates the race.

“I thought it would be a popular amendment,” he said. “And I think it probably pencils out, in terms of economic gain to the state.”

“Who can vote no against the Iditarod?” said Rep. Dan Ortiz, I-Ketchikan.

Six members of the 11-person finance committee could — and did — vote no, and the amendment was defeated.

Rep. Will Stapp, R-Fairbanks, was one of the ‘no’ votes and said Tuesday that no one would say that the Iditarod isn’t important, but there are a significant number of budgetary unknowns facing lawmakers, and those must be addressed before considering a grant. He said there may be opportunities to add funding for the race later in the budget-writing process.

“There are many other bites at the apple,” he said.

Rep. Bryce Edgmon, I-Dillingham, said his no vote wasn’t a vote against the race itself.

“It was more along the lines of just being fiscally conservative. It’s an issue I don’t know a lot about. I’m very much a supporter of the Iditarod race and quite frankly would like to learn a little more about (the issue),” he said.

Race officials did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

It has been a hard year for the race: three dogs  died on the trail , ending its five-year streak without a dog death, and  five more dogs died  in training when teams were struck by snowmachines.

Several major race sponsors have  ended their support  for the race in the last several years, after criticism from the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Those include the pet food company Nutanix, Alaska Airlines, ExxonMobil and Coca Cola.

The loss of major sponsors isn’t the only problem. Race officials have cited economic realities.

Inflation has increased the cost of dog food substantially. Some mushers  report  spending more than $40,000 per year to feed their teams. Many mushers are also reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions closed off opportunities to offer sled dog tours to tourists — a source of off-season income for many.
