Rina Sawayama’s Headliner-Worthy Set, The Walkmen’s Professionalism, And More Standouts From ACL Fest 2023

Josh Kurp

For the first time in months this weekend, the weather in Austin, Texas, wasn’t unbearable. It was downright pleasant. The timing couldn’t have been better: this past Friday to Sunday was the first weekend of the Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival . Here are some of the best performances we saw (I intentionally left out the large-font headliners because do you really need me to tell you to see the Foo Fighters or Kendrick Lamar?).

Rina Sawayama

Every year, there’s at least one mid-afternoon artist or band that gives a headliner-worthy performance. This year, that was pop iconoclast Rina Sawayama . There were costume changes, backup dancers, audience participation, and props (anyone who says print media is dead doesn’t subscribe to the Mother Times ). There were even funny bits, including one where Sawayama pretended to read instant reactions to her set on a phone. She’s a theater kid with punk energy (and a scene-stealing role in John Wick: Chapter 4 ).

“Hold the Girl” soared, “Frankenstein” should be on all future Halloween playlists, “STFU!” angrily transitioned into “Break Stuff” by Limp Bizkit (god yes), and “This Hell” left the crowd dancing — and yeehawing .

It was the best set I saw all weekend.

Alanis Morissette

The year is 1996. I’m in my living room in upstate New York playing the Toy Story video game on Sega Genesis while drinking Pepsi and listening to Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette on my Discman. Life is good.

The year is 2023. I’m at Zilker Park in central Texas still thinking about the NFL’s Toy Story broadcast while drinking Miller Lite and listening to Alanis Morissette play songs from Jagged Little Pill . Life is, well, “good” is a strong word, but I’m happy at this moment.

Of the 12 songs Morissette played during her set, eight were from her 1995 juggernaut, one of the 20 biggest-selling albums of all-time. “All I Really Want” segued into “Hand In My Pocket,” which was followed by “Right Through You” and “You Learn,” all while Morisette — with one hand in her pocket, and another wrapped around a harmonica — stalked the stage like a lion in a cage.

The Olivia Rodrigo-inspiring songs, especially “You Oughta Know,” were as punchy as ever, but there was a moment of sweet reflection at the end. After ending her set with “Thank U” (the only showing from underrated Jagged Little Pill follow-up Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie ), Morisette clapped in appreciation along with the vast crowd and said, “I love you so much. Take care of each other.” Thank u.

Yves Tumor

I didn’t plan on seeing Yves Tumor . It’s not because I didn’t want to; Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) is one of my favorite albums of the year so far. They were an unfortunate victim of a busy schedule. But while taking the long walk from where Niall Horan was playing (a pleasant set with a sing-along cover of One Direction’s “Story Of My Life”) to get a good spot for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I was drawn in by the music coming from the tented Tito’s Handmade Vodka stage. I couldn’t tell who was playing at first, but as I got closer and heard a monstrous guitar solo, thick reverb, and soulful vocals, I knew it could only be Yves Tumor. It was the perfect music festival moment: a performance so good — and thrillingly unpredictable — that I stopped in my tracks to listen to it.

I plan on hearing the whole set next weekend.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

There are two kinds of Yeah Yeah Yeahs fans: those who think “Maps” is their defining song, and those who believe it’s “Heads Will Roll.” As someone who remembers when the group’s self-titled EP came out in the early 2000s, I belong to the former camp. But for my 20-year-old half-brother, who was in attendance at ACL this year, it’s the latter. Both camps were content when Yeah Yeah Yeahs played both songs back to back to close their satisfying set.

The art punk-turned-electro pop band, led by the magnetic Karen O in an Elvis-looking outfit, also dusted off “Pin” and “Y Control” (the best YYYs song imo) from 2003’s Fever to Tell . Nick Zinner’s buzzing guitar was a standout on fan favorite “Cheated Hearts,” while drummer Brian Chase (whose family was in attendance) theatrically spun his drumsticks above his head.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have nothing to prove. But as the men and girls and everyone in between cried out to “Heads Will Roll,” you could feel the same energy that made them legends in a legendary scene.

The Walkmen

In The Walkmen standout “Angela Surf City,” vocalist Hamilton Leithauser sings, “Back to school / Back to work / Can this go on forever?”

It couldn’t: The Walkmen needed a 10-year break between tours. They’re back to work now, though, and still sound great.

I saw The Walkmen during their initial run and remember thinking, how is Hamilton’s full-throated singing voice not shredded after every show and every anthemic performance of “The Rat,” in particular. I still have that question. I also want to know how the other members of The Walkmen — guitarist Paul Maroon, bassist Walter Martin, multi-instrumentalist Peter Matthew Bauer, and beast-mode drummer Matt Barrick — sound so crisp. The Walkmen always struck me as one of the most professional rock bands of their era, and that’s still true on the reunion tour circuit.

Austin City Limits 2023: Where Legends Gather and New Icons Emerge

Austin City Limits 2023: Where Legends Gather and New Icons Emerge

As soon as I saw the 2023 Austin City Limits (ACL) Festival line-up announced, I knew I had to attend. Weekend 2 of the 2023 Austin City Limits Festival surpassed all expectations, delivering an unforgettable weekend of music. I have attended ACL in the past and the weather Gods were kind to me on weekend 2. While it was still rather hot during the day, it was bearable and cooled down a lot in the evening – which is when I spent most of my time at the festival.

Onto the details…

My 90s music loving heart needed to see the Foo Fighters for the first time and to enjoy some more Alanis Morisette. But I was very excited that I would be able to finally see Kendrick Lamar , the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Tove Lo, Niall Horan and Odesza as well.

Every year, ACL does an awesome job of bringing an eclectic mix of artists to cater to a wide range of musical tastes. Standout performances from seasoned legends and emerging talents can be found across the stages set up in Zilker Park. If you plan ACL right, you can purchase access to both weekends which helps a lot if your favorite performers are set to go on stage at the same time. It gives you flexibility to see everyone that you want to see. On top of that, if you’re not a local, you get the pleasure of spending your weekdays in Austin – the live music capital of the world. If you’re into music festivals, I can assure you that you’ll find a lot of great venues and artists traveling through Austin.

While I was kind of bummed out that Shania Twain was only on weekend one, I consider it a blessing in disguise as I probably would have been at another stage during her set. But I’m grateful that I attended weekend 2 as I got the full experience that I wanted.

On Friday night, I was determined to see Kendrick Lamar. But, Major Lazer was a nice bonus to finally see live.

There was a lot of talk at the festival about how weekend one was rough for Kendrick because his flight was delayed so they had to cut his set short due to city curfew. Weekend two would be his chance to finally perform his full set. Before King Kendrick appeared on stage, the Austin sky was lit up with blue flashing lights from drones.  ACL attendees were treated to the first-ever drone show at ACL before Kendrick’s arrival. The drones flew over the Austin, Texas skyline and to display multiple images for 10-minutes while the crowd got pumped for the last main stage act of the night.

From the moment Kendrick stepped onto the stage, it was evident why he is known as King Kendrick. His command of the stage, coupled with his impeccable flow and razor-sharp lyrics, showcased why he is hailed as one of the greatest artists of our time. The crowd was vibing as he performed his catalog of hits including, “Loyalty,”“DNA,” and “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe. While fans love Kendrick for his lyrical mastery, his set was visually stunning and full of symbolism.

ACL Festival Location

Like any other festival, getting to and from the festival takes some work. Don’t expect to be dropped off in front of the festival gates and walk right into the event. There are also taxis standing by, but their rate is definitely hiked up due to the festival Many attendees utilize rideshare – which is smart – to get to/from the festival. But with over 450,000 attendees also requesting rides to/from the event, there is going to be some wait time involved. Help your rideshare driver out – update your picture in the app before you attend, if you can – I know feet hurt after walking miles at the festival but once you exit the festival, walk a little way further down the road to have your rideshare driver meet you at a nearby bar or gas station. Many rideshare drivers will cancel if they see you’re in the festival mess. If you’re willing to walk a little bit further, you’ll certainly greet a less stressed rideshare driver when you finally meet up.. If you’re not in a hurry, you can also wait for the cost of the ride to go down. Immediately after the event, costs will be high. If you can be patient, you’ll save a lot of money.

The festival itself was well thought out, allowing for easy navigation between stages, merch store, food vendors, and sponsorship booths. The festival grounds were impeccably maintained, perhaps more so because fans are encouraged by Austin Parks Foundation to pick up a bag of aluminum cans to exchange for a custom designed, festival t-shirt. Ample amenities including several water stations and numerous restroom areas ensured that attendees were comfortable throughout the weekend.

ACL Festival Atmosphere

ACL is an all-ages festival, which leads to some interesting interactions. The millennial in me struggled when I went to see Tove Lo perform – instead of being able to hear the music, I had several girls standing behind me talking as loud as they could with their backs turned to the stage. This wasn’t a one-time experience. It didn’t seem like I was the only one bothered. There are multiple threads on Reddit explaining how we all need to stop and remember concert etiquette as clearly many folks have forgotten that we’re here for the music.  Overwhelming, the positive vibe from the music lovers was infectious, and it was heartwarming to witness strangers connecting over their favorite bands and artists.

ACL Food & Drinks

The festival food and drinks were delicious this year. I’m always impressed with the variety of local vendors that show up. It was convenient being able to use wristbands to quickly pay at these food and alcohol stations. Some food highlights for me included the Truffle Mac and Cheese from Lonesome Dove Western Bistro and the frozen chocolate-dipped banana with caramel and oreos that I procured from Bananarchy.  There was an impressive array of options to satisfy any palate. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options were readily available, catering to a diverse range of dietary preferences.

Safety at ACL Festival

Security and medical personnel were readily available, contributing to a safe and secure environment. Even the artists were keeping an eye on the audience to see if people needed assistance. I attended several performances where the artist stopped to make sure emergency personnel was aware that medical assistance was needed. It’s nice to know that our icons are looking out for us. On the way out of the festival, there were also armed policemen scanning the site to ensure everyone stayed out of harm’s way.

TL: DR – 2023 Austin City Limits Music Festival was epic. Attending this music festival should be on your bucket list if it isn’t already. And if you can’t make the festival, visit Austin, Texas – the live music capital lives up to its name.

Austin City Limits

Episode premiere: Jenny Lewis/MUNA

austin city limits tour 2023

Austin City Limits (ACL) newly-launched Season 49 continues with a double-bill showcasing a pair of Los Angeles-based acts: acclaimed singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis returns to the ACL stage for her first appearance in a decade with selections from her latest Joy’All and breakthrough indie-pop band MUNA deliver a revelatory set in a radiant ACL debut. The new episode premieres October 14 at 7pm CT/8pm ET . ACL airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings) and full episodes are made available to stream online at pbs.org/austincitylimits immediately following the initial broadcast.

The program, produced by Austin PBS and recorded live at ACL’s studio home ACL Live in Austin, Texas, continues its extraordinary run as the longest-running music television show in history, providing viewers a front-row seat to the best in live performance for 49 years as the music institution nears a remarkable half-century milestone. Austin City Limits celebrates 50 years as a live music beacon in 2024: on October 17, 1974, Willie Nelson taped the pilot episode and the trailblazing series premiered in 1975. Stay tuned for news on special concerts, fan events and activations as Austin City Limits salutes an incredible legacy of 50 golden years of American musical history and iconic performances.

“What a joy to be back here at ACL,” says Jenny Lewis as she opens a joy-filled set in her second appearance as a solo artist on the ACL stage, two decades into a prolific career. Clad in a black leather jumpsuit, and fronting an all-female band of ringers, Lewis perches on a circular mini-stage for “Joy’All,” the irresistible title track of her acclaimed fifth album, produced by Nashville ace Dave Cobb. The clarion quality of Lewis’ voice soars as she switches between a guitar and a Wurlitzer. She sits at the keyboard for the soulful “Heads Gonna Roll,” from 2019’s On the Line , a tumultuous road trip anthem fueled by a fire of unrequited love. Revered by fans for her confessional, narrative lyrics, a set highlight is the country-rock kiss-off “Psychos,” featuring a lush melody, pedal steel arrangement and the fan-favorite line “I’m not a psycho, I’m just tryna get laid.” The set closes with the joyous rock tune “Love Feel,” earning rapturous cheers from the crowd as she namechecks forebears Waylon and Wilie, Marvin Gaye, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and another ACL inspiration: “A little shout-out to John Prine there!” as Lewis closes out a sparkling set with a smile.

In their ACL debut, LA trio MUNA perform a supercharged set showcasing gems from their self-titled third album. The group consists of lead singer and songwriter Katie Gavin, multi-instrumentalist Naomi McPherson and lead guitarist Josette Maskin. The trio are enjoying a meteoric rise and a banner year, becoming one of music’s must-see live acts, landing 2023 arena dates opening for Taylor Swift and boygenius, in addition to high-profile festival appearances at Coachella and Bonnaroo, and their own sold-out “Life’s So Fun” tour. MUNA have earned legions of fervent fans and widespread acclaim for their propulsive pop-rock melodies and hook-filled queer anthems. MUNA’s songwriting touches on the joys, longings and complexities of life in the LGBTQ community. The band radiates electric energy as their followers in the MUNAverse thrill to the empowering singalongs of “Kind of Girl” and “Anything But Me.” The performance reaches a fever pitch with “Home By Now,” a dancefloor banger, as Katie Gavin dances across the stage for a euphoric close.

“‘Joy’ is the operative word for this powerful combo,” said ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “Jenny Lewis showcases a new chapter in her prolific career, proving that she continues to break musical boundaries, and MUNA’s anthemic songs prove that everything is possible when people connect to each other.”

Austin City Limits

Austin City Limits (ACL) offers viewers unparalleled access to featured acts in an intimate setting that provides a platform for artists to deliver inspired, memorable, full-length performances. Now in its 49th Season, the program is taped live before a concert audience from The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. Austin City Limits is the longest-running music series in television history and remains the only TV series to ever be awarded the National Medal of Arts. Since its inception, the groundbreaking music series has become an institution that’s helped secure Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World. The historic Austin PBS Studio 6A, home to 36 years of ACL concerts, has been designated an official Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Landmark. In 2011, ACL moved to the new venue ACL Live at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. ACL received a rare institutional Peabody Award for excellence and outstanding achievement in 2012.

Austin City Limits is produced by Austin PBS and funding is provided in part by Dell Technologies, the Austin Convention Center Department, Cirrus Logic and AXS Ticketing. Additional funding is provided by the Friends of Austin City Limits. Learn more about Austin City Limits , programming and history at acltv.com .
