New Tourism Campaign from Travel Texas Urges Visitors to Go 'Get Your Own Trip to Texas'

travel texas commercial

Travel Texas is unveiling a new national campaign centered on the rallying cry, 'Get Your Own Trip to Texas'. The campaign looks to break the typical templated mould of state tourism advertising, because for Texas, there is no simple recipe that can capture all that the state has to offer.

The state’s vast landscape of cultures, regions, destinations, and activities make for an infinite number of travel combinations, allowing visitors to personalize their trip to their own unique preferences.  No two trips are alike - nor should they be. As such, the message behind the campaign is simple: there are an infinite number of trips to Texas but the only one that matters is yours.

Concepted and executed by Proof Advertising, the campaign captures moments from over 20 different locations in Texas and puts them together in ways that show the unmatched variety Texas has to offer. Just when the viewer thinks they are watching a “typical” tourism commercial, the actor breaks the fourth wall and proclaims that this is their trip to Texas and urges the viewer to “Go get their own."

In addition, national print, digital and social assets will hit the market throughout the month of February with all creative driving consumers to the Get Your Own Trip to Texas custom Trip Builder which will also live on TravelTexas.com. More vision board than typical itinerary builder, the experience allows users to swipe left and right on different Texas activities to generate trip inspiration matched to their unique interests. Print will be running across publications like Esquire, Men’s Health and Country Living, while social and digital is supported across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and more.

The media plan looks to leverage unique personalization targeting where possible; for instance, print ads leverage online data and are inserted into relevant subscribers’ issues and streaming audio ads will dynamically change based on listener’s behaviors. Overall, the media will drive 1.8B impressions of paid media support to get the new campaign in front of travel intenders.

Tim Fennell, tourism deputy director of Travel Texas said: “Texas offers unlimited options and experiences for travelers that are seeking personalization and customization above all else. There is no better way to celebrate that than inspiring consumers to explore all that the state has to offer and make their trip to Texas truly their own.”

“No two trips to Texas are ever alike. So when it came to storytelling, first we challenged the overdone conventions of the category. Then we broke the 4th wall and engaged the consumer to ‘Get Your Own Trip’. You should never have to settle for a cookie cutter itinerary (or a cookie cutter travel ad), and Texas offers an infinite number of ways to make a trip your own,” said Craig Markus, executive creative director of Proof.

Travel Texas Launches $30 Million Effort

  • by Tanya Gazdik , February 10, 2022

travel texas commercial

Everything is bigger in Texas, including the size of its tourism marketing budget.

Travel Texas is unveiling a national campaign centered on the rallying cry, “Get Your Own Trip to Texas.” The campaign, supported by a $30 million media buy, aims to break the typical mold of state tourism advertising.

The campaign effort is in line with historical campaigns for the brand, says Tim Fennell, tourism director, Travel Texas.

“We temporarily scaled back our efforts in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but our new 2022 campaign signifies a return to form as we continue to inspire travel throughout the state of Texas,” Fennell tells Marketing Daily .

The group's last major campaign was in 2019, when it rebranded with a new tagline of "Let's Texas.” Proof Advertising, which has had the account since 2017, created the campaign.

Creative captures moments from over 20 different locations in Texas and puts them together in ways that show the variety Texas has to offer. Just when viewers think they are watching a “typical” tourism commercial, the actor breaks the fourth wall and proclaims that this is their trip to Texas and urges the viewer to “Go get their own.”

The campaign features four 30-second spots that will run online and on digital/connected TV.  One spot features millennials watching live music, eating Southwestern food and attending a soccer game, while another spot shows a family visiting a museum and stadium, and enjoying the outdoors.   A third spot  shows two millennial couples surfing and eating BBQ, while the  fourth spot features another family.

National print, digital and social assets debut throughout February, with all creative driving consumers to the Get Your Own Trip to Texas custom  Trip Builder  which will also live on  TravelTexas.com .

Print includes Esquire, Men’s Health and Country Living , while social and digital is supported across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest.

The media plan leverages personalization targeting. Print ads use online data and are inserted into relevant subscribers’ issues, and streaming audio ads will dynamically change based on listener’s behaviors.

Overall, the effort is expected to drive 1.8 billion impressions of paid media support.

Millennials and Gen X are the primary target followed by Baby Boomers, says Bryan Christian, chief executive officer and owner of Proof Advertising.

Part of the reason the efforts cast such a wide net is to ensure Texas remains top of mind as a premier travel destination, whether viewers are ready to travel now, in the near future or in the extended future, he adds.

The campaign doesn't mention COVID-19 and doesn't show actors wearing masks, but it’s an accurate portrayal of Texas, which does not have a mask mandate, Christian says.

“We worked to show a responsible travel mindset with smaller group sizes -- often depicting families or small groups of friends -- and we leaned into the variety of outdoor experiences that Texas has to offer,” he says.“Texas is wide open for travel and exploration, and because our campaign will run for an extended period of time, we are focused on inspiring future travel, no matter when people are ready to visit Texas.”

Pinterest is the #1 brand for “makes me feel inspired,” so naturally it was the perfect platform to inspire new trips to Texas, but the trick was standing out from the sea of pins.

In our first year with Travel Texas, their budget was two-thirds of the year before. Through innovative planning and buying, we were able to reach the same 1.3 billion impression goal, decrease the CPM by 60%, and increase ROAS 35%, generating millions in tax revenue for the state.

Texas Says No Oversized Loads Are Allowed To Travel On The Day of Eclipse. Here's What We Know.

Texas says no oversized loads are allowed to travel on the day of eclipse. here’s what we know..

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles is expecting severe traffic delays in the counties within the path of the solar eclipse .

More than a million people are expected to travel here to watch the solar eclipse, and it makes me wonder if they’ve even researched Texas weather…

I have a feeling it’s going to be super cloudy and maybe even rain, because that’s what always happens when we have something cool happening in the sky.

The increased volume of drivers on the road has led to the TX DMV decision that will ban any size/weight limit permitted vehicles to travel in the long list of counties below from Midnight to midnight on April 8th.

They have also said they are working on not allowing any temporary construction lane closures on the day of the eclipse to help keep traffic moving.

If you have any questions about the restrictions you should call the TxDMV Permit Office at 1-800-299-1700, and choose option 2.

Other states are implementing similar restrictions, this includes Arkansas, Indiana, and New York.

Oversize loads banned from 83 Texas counties for solar eclipse

Oversize loads banned from 83 Texas counties in to cut down on traffic during the solar eclipse.

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles states that tourists flocking to the state to view the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th are expected to cause “severe traffic delays.” Because of this traffic expectation, TxDOT states that “no size/weight permitted travel will be allowed on that day from midnight to midnight” in the following 83 central Texas counties:

  • Anderson, Atascosa
  • Bandera, Bell, Bexar, Blanco, Bosque, Bowie, Brown, Burnet

“There’s already setbacks in the first place as a trucker,” said truck driver Aidan Ragheb to ABC 10 . “So when you have more restrictions — then added on top with a permit — then your trip just becomes longer and longer.”

“In the end of it all, it’s all about safety,” Ragheb said. “Whoever you’re driving for should already be prepared to either get it there the day before, or have it planned the day after [the solar eclipse].”

During the 2017 solar eclipse, states in the path of totality saw a 222% increase in traffic, ABC 10 reported.

“Well if them guys can’t go, they’re going to have to find a place to park, and it’s going to make quite a difference for them,” said Ken Clark, a truck driver who drives through Texas each week.

“If you take out a whole day of travel, that’s pretty serious,” Ragheb added.

Vermont has issued a similar restriction on oversize loads for the solar eclipse on Monday the 8th, and is even “strongly urging commercial motor vehicle drivers traveling to and through Vermont… to consider alternative delivery dates and routes.”

Meanwhile, officials in Arkansas are suggesting that carriers and truck drivers take a “truck holiday” during the solar eclipse. Though the state’s official traffic plan states that there will be “no penalty for those who decide to operate during the eclipse.”

Texas halts transport of oversize loads during eclipse

Eclipse could cause ‘four times the normal rush hour levels of traffic’ on monday, experts say.

' src=

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles recently announced there will be no oversize loads allowed to travel from midnight Sunday to midnight on Monday, the day of the solar eclipse.

About 1 million people from out of state are expected to travel to Texas to see the eclipse on Monday, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

All four of the Lone Star State’s largest cities — Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and Fort Worth — are along the eclipse’s path of totality, where the moon’s shadow completely blocks out the light of the Sun.

“It’s difficult to predict the exact levels of congestion, but some areas could see four times the normal rush hour levels of traffic,” a TxDOT spokesman said in an email to FreightWaves. “That means heavy travel delays throughout the state, and it’s important for drivers to plan for that. TxDOT has been able to prepare well in advance for this event in coordination with multiple state agencies, and we will have 24/7 emergency operations available.”

From Texas to Maine, almost 4 million people are expected to travel in order to view the total eclipse, according to transportation officials. Overall, more than 34 million people in the U.S. are expected to view the spectacle.

Some trucking companies are anticipating disruptions because of the increased number of vehicles on roadways from the event.

“Since a total solar eclipse doesn’t happen very often, we anticipate a high level of traffic and potential road closures to secondary roads due to the increase of tourism within the line of totality,” Amos Rogan, Averitt Express’ less-than-truckload operations leader, told FreightWaves. “With that, we will caution our drivers to maintain a high level of safety and vigilance to ensure that they do not get caught in a situation where we are compromising our equipment nor putting the general public in harm’s way.”

Averitt Express is a Cookeville, Tennessee-based less-than-truckload carrier with more than 5,700 tractors and 13,000 trailers and 85 locations across the country. Averitt’s team consists of more than 8,000 associates, according to its website.

The Texas Trucking Association (TXTA) said it expects increased traffic on Monday but is not anticipating any major impact on freight movements.

“TXTA does not expect any major changes in the trucking industry due to the eclipse. As of now, it’s being treated like any other short-lived ‘weather’ event,” John Esparza, TXTA president and CEO, told FreightWaves. “We do expect an increase in traffic in the areas where the eclipse can be seen due to an increase in visitors. Therefore, the state is addressing this alongside the communities being impacted. TXTA does not have any knowledge of trucking operations being impacted though.”

TxDOT officials predict traffic flows will be the heaviest on Monday afternoon and evening, after the solar eclipse event ends.

“We do expect the most traffic impacts to be in the hours right after the eclipse, and that could continue into the evening,” TxDOT said. “However, as many people travel to see the eclipse, there could be heavy traffic impacts before, during and after the eclipse which could continue into Tuesday.”

The Texas ban on oversize loads on Monday includes more than 80 counties, about a 480-mile stretch through the state. Some vehicles potentially affected by this ban include truck-tractor combinations and vehicles hauling wide loads in excess of 8-feet 6-inches.

The ban on oversize loads is one of the latest measures local and state governments are taking to deal with a massive influx of traffic expected for the celestial event.

Ahead of the solar eclipse, some state transportation departments and trucking associations have advised truckers to stay off the roads on Monday.

In February, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) released its 2024 Solar Eclipse Traffic Management Plan, asking carriers to take a voluntary “truck holiday” and park their vehicles for the day.

“Severe congestion is expected on the entire Arkansas State Highway System during the eclipse, to such an extent that the day may be mostly unproductive for freight vehicles. ARDOT will engage the Arkansas Trucking Association in an effort to encourage truckers to adjust their travel schedule so they are not trapped on the roadways with eclipse-related traffic,” ARDOT said in a statement.

About 1.5 million people are expected to travel from Arkansas from outside the state to view the eclipse, according to ARDOT. The department also expects about 500,000 in-state residents to travel from their homes to the path of totality.

“Any way you cut it, it’s going to be crowded that day,” ARDOT Spokesperson Dave Parker told THV11. “Our roads are going to be tested.” Eclipse’s impact on freight volumes remains unclear It’s unclear whether trucking freight will be slower on Monday.

North America’s last total solar eclipse was in August 2017, when the shadow of the moon tracked a path across the U.S. from Oregon to South Carolina.

It’s estimated the 2017 Eclipse cost U.S. employers almost $700 million in lost productivity, with some areas experiencing as much as $200 million in losses due to absenteeism, according to a blog post Challenger Gray & Christmas, a Chicago-based executive outplacement firm.

“American employers will see at least $694 million in missing output for the roughly 20 minutes workers will take out of their workday on Monday to stretch their legs, head outside the office and gaze at the nearly two-and-a-half minute eclipse,” Challenger, Gray & Christmas said.

Some carriers, like Averitt, will be letting their employees take some time to watch the eclipse event.

“We know this is a unique event, and we understand that people will want to watch this amazing phenomenon unfold — the next one not occurring again in the continental 48 states until 2045,” Rogan said. “We’ve even provided glasses to our own associates to safely view the eclipse when it happens. However, our commitment to maintaining a high level of service, quality, and safety remains of utmost importance. We will continue to work with our customers, associates, and local authorities to navigate through this event properly.”

What travelers should know about FAA advisory on total solar eclipse before April 8

travel texas commercial

The total solar eclipse is nearing, so the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is offering guidance to commercial planes and private aircraft ahead of the phenomenon .

The "Great North American Eclipse" will occur on April 8 . During this cosmic event, the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun and travel " a narrow path of totality from southwest to northeast across thirteen U.S. states," the government agency said.

Millions of people will want to view it from the ground . But what about those who are airborne?

For many passengers, the impact should be limited to the types of delays associated with high-travel days.

"Due to the high volume of traffic along the eclipse path, (airport) arrivals can expect lengthy delays during peak traffic periods," the FAA said.

The eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean and cross North America, passing over Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, according to the FAA. The eclipse's path will affect the U.S. from 2:30 p.m. EST to 3:40 p.m. EST, the agency said.

Airports in Texas, Vermont, Maine, Canada, New Hampshire, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri will be primarily affected by the eclipse , the FAA said.

"The purpose of this notice is to inform airmen of the possible impacts to air traffic and airports along the eclipse path during the period April 7, 2024, (6 a.m. EST) through April 10, 2024, (midnight EST)," the FAA said.

When is the 2024 total solar eclipse? Your guide to glasses, forecast, where to watch.

What the FAA is saying about aircraft ahead of the eclipse

In preparation for the eclipse, aircraft should be ready for potential airborne holding (circling in the air to delay landing), rerouting and FAA-indicated take-off times for all domestic arrivals and departures that abide by instrument flight rules, according to the agency.

Traffic management initiatives , including alternative routing, parking guidance strategies and the slowing down and speeding up of air traffic could be implemented during the total eclipse, according to the FAA.

"There may be a higher traffic volume than normal anticipated at airports along the path of the eclipse," the government agency said. "Traffic should anticipate delays during peak traffic periods."

Parking for aircraft could be limited, particularly at the smaller and uncontrolled airports, the FAA said. Departures could be a challenge for certain aircraft depending on their level of clearance, the agency said.

Remember the 2017 total solar eclipse? Here's why the 2024 event will be bigger and better.

Pilots could find some restrictions at airports on April 8, FAA says

Pilot training operations at airports will be "extremely limited" and "possibly prohibited" as the eclipse passes, according to the FAA.

Pilots are advised to "carefully" check the Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs), a notice to help prepare for changes in procedure and service and against hazards, the FAA said.

"Specific NOTAM procedures may be revised, and arrivals to some airports possibly restricted so please review NOTAMs frequently to verify you have the current information," according to the agency.

Special security provisions may be in effect during the eclipse, including temporary flight restrictions (TFRs), two-way radio communications and discrete transponder requirements , the FAA said.

TFRs are normally announced through NOTAM about three to five days before the event, the agency said.

Texas school bus crash: Truck driver was not allowed to drive at time of crash

Truck driver was not allowed to drive.

The concrete truck driver involved in a deadly school bus crash was not allowed to drive a commercial vehicle at the time of the incident in Bastrop County, according to the federal government.

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas - The concrete truck driver involved in a deadly school bus crash was not allowed to drive a commercial vehicle at the time of the incident in Bastrop County , according to the federal government.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Jerry Hernandez was declared an "imminent hazard to public safety." It ordered Hernandez to stop driving any commercial vehicle for in-state or interstate commerce.

Truck driver arrested, charged for crash

The cement truck driver involved in the deadly crash with a Hays CISD school bus and another vehicle was charged and arrested on Friday, Texas DPS said.

The federal government said Hernandez had already been prohibited from operating any commercial vehicle for drug use three times before. He was disqualified from driving commercial because of a drug test a year ago that found cocaine use.

The federal government is now working with the state of Texas to disqualify his commercial driver's license.

Explosives found at Southeast Side home detonated, BCSO says

About 20 pounds of commercial explosives found by family members at inherited property on stuart road.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Explosives found at a vacant property in Southeast Bexar County were detonated Tuesday afternoon, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The San Antonio Police bomb squad assisted BCSO and the Bexar County Fire Marshal’s Office with the detonation in the 8400 block of Stuart Road, near the intersection with New Sulphur Springs Road.

The property owner reported finding 20 pounds of “commercial explosives” while they were clearing out, which was found on the land they had inherited from a family member, BCFMO Deputy Chief John Ortega said. Investigators believe the explosives, which were in a container in an open field, had been there “probably 40 years or so, if not longer.”

“Prior to the federal regulation of high explosives, you know, we’re talking 50 years ago — 40, 50 years ago — these items were kind of proliferated out into the public,” Ortega said.

People within a 1,000-foot radius of the site were evacuated — about 11 or 12 homes in all. The explosives were detonated shortly after 1:30 p.m.

SAPD, in their social media posts, said the incident was not a danger to public safety; however, people in the area could have experienced a shake from the detonation.

Flying during the solar eclipse? These airports could see delays, FAA says

By Khristopher J. Brooks

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

March 28, 2024 / 7:04 PM EDT / CBS News

Air travel was already expected to pick up next week because of Spring Break, but Federal Aviation Administration officials  said  now until mid-April will be increasingly busy due to "the Great North American Eclipse."

Many Americans are planning on flying on April 8, the day when the U.S. will experience a total solar eclipse that will track across the sky from Texas to Maine. While some eclipse chasers will be heading toward states in its main path, others are timing flights to view it while airborne.

The eclipse "will likely mean crowded parking lots at airports and long lines at security checkpoints," Marisa Garcia, a senior contributor at Forbes,  told  CBS News.

"It's going to be hectic but fun," she added. "Go with the mindset that it's going to be busy and pack light and pack carefully. Be patient and pleasant with everyone."

Passengers on the day of the eclipse should expect air traffic delays and an unusually high number of drones in the skies, FAA Senior Technical Advisor Kevin Morris said in an advisory  video .

According to the FAA, these airports could see delays on April 8:

  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis
  • Kansas City, Missouri
  • Toledo, Ohio
  • Erie, Pennsylvania
  • Austin, Texas
  • San Antonio, Texas
  • Burlington, Vermont

Garcia said American Airlines could see the biggest delays at Dallas-Fort Worth, the airline's main hub, which is squarely within the eclipse's path of totality  — where it can be seen in full.

Officials in Erie, Pennsylvania, said they expect roughly 250,000 people to flock to the area for the eclipse. Meanwhile, tourism for the big event is expected to bring $1 billion to Texas .
