Eagle Vision In 1976, Neil Diamond was huge in Australia. Actually, the word huge doesnt even cut itenormously gigantic on an unfathomable scale is more like it. His popularity was so immense that his Hot August Night album was in one of every three Australian households. Thus, when he decided to make a comeback after a three-year sabbatical from live performing, he chose a seven city tour of Australia and New Zealand for his return to the stage. All of Australia fell into a massive media frenzy for Diamond, and his tour culminated in a sold-out show for 38,000 in Sydney that was broadcast live nationwide to 3 million people, a number that was the largest television audience in Australian history at the time. The live television feed of this March 9, 1976 performance, which sometimes looks rudimentary when compared to modern technology, is the basis for this newly released DVD . After an incredibly overdramatic intro with a choir and cheesy synthesizers that evoke Manheim Steamroller, a hyper-serious, leather-panted Diamond strides on stage for an overdramatic rendering of Soolaimon. The drama, stiffness, and tension continue on Play Me and Solitary Man causing one to wonder why anyone would want to see this guy in concert. However, a switch is magically flipped during the jubilant Cherry Cherry, and Diamond starts strutting around the stage and shaking his hips like Elvis. Finally, he seems to be relishing the moment, directing his conga player to start jamming and just like that, a band that was sounding incredibly sparse and thin suddenly starts to sound full of life and energy. Sweet Caroline tears off the shackles and Planet Diamond goes into orbit, taking the crowd along with every growl in his voice. From this point forward, he becomes a phenomenal showman, dancing the mambo to The Last Picasso, conducting the crowd in a humorous sing-a-long to Song Sung Blue, and oozing passion out of guttural wails on Holly Holy. Diamond is relaxed and seems to truly love his audience, frequently joking back-and-forth with them and putting on a very entertaining show. Sure, there are some less-than-stellar moments, including the weird, religious overtones of a long set-closing medley revolving around Anthem and some hilariously dated computer animation on Skybird, but on the whole, this is one rollicking affair, punctuated by the spirited first encore of Brother Loves Salvation Show. Unlike many concert DVDs, the extras on this release are almost as impressive as the main event. Included are journalist David Frosts repeatedly awkward attempts to introduce a live show that isnt quite ready to begin, and Diamonds mid-show product pitches (to fund the commercial-free broadcast) are executed tongue-in-cheek and are quite funny. Not to be overlooked is an incredibly lengthy interview with Australias A Current Affair. It was the first time the fiercely private Diamond had agreed to an in-depth television interview, and after suffering through the interviewers often annoying and obnoxious questions, the amazingly patient Diamond comes across as a rather gracious and often sympathetic figure. No one really can explain why the French love Jerry Lewis, and no one has any idea why the Germans love David Hasselhoff, but this snapshot of an artist in his prime is the perfect justification for Australias love of Neil Diamond.

Neil Diamond Live 1976: The Thank You Australia Concert Eagle Vision Rating: ** and 1/2

In recent years, Neil Diamond has reclaimed his rightful place as a pop craftsman with hip credibility. Much of the credit goes to his last two albums, produced by Rick Rubin. 12 Songs and the even-better Home Before Dark stripped Diamond’s music down to its basics, reminding us that it sometimes takes courage to ride a simple chord pattern for six minutes and leave the melody uncluttered. The discs said it plainly: this is still the man who wrote I’m a Believer and A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You.

This DVD, recorded 32 years ago, reminds us of something less inspiring — that Diamond, at his superstar peak, could be a self-important windbag.

The occasion was his Thank You Australia concert, recorded March 9, 1976, at the end of an Australian tour. Some 38,000 people were at the Sydney Sports Ground to see it, while some 3 million watched it on television. Although the liners notes tell us the set clocked in at almost three hours, the concert proper, as captured here, is just under two. But that’s OK: it still seems like three. The pacing, to be generous, is problematic.

Trouble comes early with the plodding seven-minute-plus set opener Soolaimon, which is quickly followed by Play Me, another snoozer. When Solitary Man, also weirdly slowed down, comes in, followed by some sorely-needed hits, things brighten up. The recovery, however, is temporary. Before you know it, Diamond — sporting a classic 1970s haircut — is carrying on an excruciating “Any people from Melbourne here?” exchange with the audience, and that goes on for a painful 10 minutes. Song Sung Blue, with audience singalong, goes on for the same length of time.

Sometimes the turtle pace is compounded by pretentiousness: the cringeworthy we’re-all-unique-individuals monologue that opens I Am, I Said has nothing on the interminable Jonathan Livingston Seagull suite that ends the show.

Among the bonus features are a 47-minute television interview, taped after the concert, in which Diamond – clearly in oh-the-hard-life-of-a-pop-star mode – actually says “I can’t deal with the enormity of this success, so I don’t deal with it.” Unaired concert footage, a lame sequence in which the singer does commercials from the stage, David Frost’s introduction to the broadcast and a photo gallery complete the extras.

Amazingly, it’s not all bad news. Part of Diamond’s brilliance has to do with (sorry for the music geek stuff here) the basic, but perfect, I-IV-V chord combination (or, if you will, the La Bamba/ Twist and Shout pattern) and its many variations. You can hear it in Cherry Cherry and Cracklin’ Rosie in this set. Holly Holy, Sweet Caroline and Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show follow different melodic ideas, but once they’re in your head, you’re a goner. This live document, with all its flaws, demonstrates Diamond’s gift for hooks once again.

On January 19, 2024, Mercury Studios will reissue the historic and formerly long out of print concert event The Thank You Australia Concert Live 1976 DVD, from the legendary and inimitable songwriter and performer Neil Diamond.

Performing to a record-breaking crowd at Sydney's Sports Ground and telecast live to the largest viewer audience in Australian history, Neil Diamond's explosive performance in March of 1976 electrified and mesmerized an entire nation for one amazing night with nearly three hours of phenomenal showmanship and entertainment. With a stunning set packed with hit singles and classic musical gems, this special release DVD captures the magic of this unforgettable concert from a cultural icon and is truly a must have collectible for any music fan.

This concert from the Sydney Sports Stadium was the final show of Diamond's 1976 Australian New Zealand tour, an event that marked his comeback to the stage after a creatively fruitful four-year sabbatical from live performance that resulted in the creation of the ground-breaking, Grammy winning album; Jonathon Livingston Seagull and the autobiographical album Beautiful Noise, produced by Robbie Robertson of The Band.

Just ten years after “Solitary Man” rocketed into the charts and introduced us to the musical magic of Neil Diamond; the 1976 tour is still one of the most memorable in Australian history. The Neil Diamond Thank You Australia Concert Live 1976 delivers the enthralling performance of a consummate showman.
