USGA releases 26 qualifying sites for 2024 U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster CC

The 2024 U.S. Women's Open will be played at Lancaster CC for the second time.

USGA/Jason E. Miczek

The 2024 U.S. Women’s Open will return to Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Penn., for the second time this spring. In Lancaster Country Club’s U.S. Women’s Open debut in 2015, the championship was won by In-Gee Chun, who claimed her first major with the victory. She has since won two more majors, the 2016 Evian and the 2022 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Amateur and professional U.S. Women’s Open hopefuls now have a designated path to the championship. On Tuesday, the USGA released the host course list for the U.S. Women’s Open’s 2024 qualifiers. The qualifiers will be held on 23 total sites across 17 states, plus one each in Canada, Japan and Germany, between April 15 and May 20.

Unlike the men’s championship , the women do not play in 18-hole local qualifiers to earn entry into final qualifying. Instead, women compete over 36 holes at one of the 26 qualifying sites, with top finishers earning direct entry into the championship.

U.S. Women’s Open offering record-setting purse in 2024

To enter the championship, amateur women must have a USGA handicap index of 2.4 or better.

Demand for the U.S. Women’s Open has been on an upward trajectory, breaking entry records in back-to-back years. Last year, the USGA set a new record for the number of entries as 2,107 players attempted to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach .

Hopeful qualifiers can apply online until April 3 at 5 p.m. ET. The U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster CC will be played May 30-June 2, 2024. Check out the full list of 2024 qualifying sites below.

How the 2024 NCAA DI women's golf championships work

Regionals take place May 6-8, followed by the championship finals from May 17-22 in Carlsbad, California.

In regional play, six 54-hole regional competitions will be played to determine the participants in the championship finals. In each regional, 12 teams and six individuals not on those teams will compete. The low five teams and the individual not on those teams will advance to the finals. Beginning in 2024, regional champion awards will be given to the team champions.

In the championship finals, all 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed playing the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed playing the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed playing the No. 5 seed in match play.

A total of five points will be available with one point being awarded for each individual match. Winning teams will advance to the semifinals and subsequently the finals. The first team to win three points within the team match will advance, or in the case of the final match be declared the national champion.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2024 Chevron Championship

N elly Korda did it again. The 25-year-old American captured the Chevron Championship to collect a fifth-straight victory Sunday at Carlton Woods, trying Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez as the only other players in LPGA history to accomplish the feat. It's also Korda's second major win, following the 2021 Women's PGA Championship.

Korda opened with 68 then shot three consecutibe 69s to finish at 13-under-par total to earn the $1.2 million first-place check from the $7.9 million purse. Maja Start was second place, two shots back. She earned $666,834.

RELATED: Here are the clubs Nelly Korda used to win the Chevron Championship

There’s been a broken record being played at LPGA majors of late, but one that’s creating beautiful music to those competing in the events. As tour executives emphasize the goal of increasing the prize money payouts for each event, they’re making good on the promise. In 2023, all five of the tour’s biggest individual events paid out record amounts, including a $12 million payout from the USGA at the U.S. Women’s Open and a $10 million purse from the PGA of America at the KPMG Women’s PGA.

Will the trend continue in 2024—particularly with the public awakening going regarding women’s sports overall ? If the Chevron Championship is any indication, it likely will. Earlier in the week, tournament organizers in conjunction with LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan, announced that the overall prize money payout for the event would be $7.9 million , a jump from $5.2 million in 2023.

In the three years since Chevron became the sponsor, purses for the tournament, previously held in the Palm Springs area and best known as the Dinah Shore, have risen $4.8 million. And the tour and Chevron announced that the title sponsorship has been extended until 2029.

At the Chevron this week, even those who didn't make the cut received $10,000 for their participation, up from $5,000 last year.

Here are the prize money payouts for every golfer who made the cut in Texas.

Win: Nelly Korda, -13/275, $1,200,000

2: Maja Stark, -11/277, $663,834

T-3: Lauren Coughlin, -10/278, $428,976

T-3: Brooke Henderson, -10/278, $ 428,976

5: Hae Ran Ryu, -9/279, $301,199

6: Carlota Ciganda, -8/280, $246,434

7: Esther Henseleit, -7/281, $206,275

U.S. surfer accompanied by dolphins as she wins world championship event in Australia

Hawaiian surfer Gabriela Bryan shared a wave with a pod of dolphins as she won her first world championship tour event over Californian rookie Sawyer Lindblad in pumping surf at the Western Australia Margaret River Pro on Sunday.

Margaret River local Jack Robinson took out a spectacular men’s final against Hawaii’s two-time world champion John John Florence in a replay of their 2022 final of the same event.

Robinson and Florence were the two form surfers of the event and traded huge carves on the double-overhead walls as the waves finally improved on last day of the 11-day competition window.

The decisive moment came midway through the final when Robinson scored an excellent 9.10 out of 10 for two giant turns on the biggest wave of the day and followed it up with a lofty frontside air on the very next wave for an 8.17.

Florence kept battling and scored an excellent wave of his own but could not reel in the Western Australian, who finished with 17.27 out of 20 to Florence’s 16.04.

“That was the final I wanted, I wanted to throw everything at it. It’s always fun surfing against John — we’re going to have many more heats together,” said Robinson, who missed the event last year due to injury.

The world tour next heads to the thumping tubes of Teahupo’o in Tahiti, where both Robinson and Florence will be among the favourites battling for Olympic gold in just a few months time.

Florence earlier scored the only perfect 10 of the event in his semi-final against Australian wildcard George Pittar, blowing his tail out and holding onto his board with the toenails of one foot before recovering for a couple more turns.

Western Australia Margaret River Pro

Both Bryan, 22, and 18-year-old Lindblad had to go deep at Margaret River to avoid the mid-season cut and secure their place for the remainder of the 2024 tour.

Lindblad went into the final in top form, having dispatched two-time world champion Tyler Wright in their semi-final to secure her place above the cut line.

Bryan took a commanding lead with a 7.83 for two powerful turns on her forehand as a handful of dolphins swooped around her.

“When I kicked out, I was just wow! That wave was sent to me by someone, the dolphins in it. It was magical,” said Bryan, who scored an even better 8.10 on her second scoring ride.

“I’m just so happy we got good waves today and all the girls put on a really good show. It’s insane, I just won!”

Both the men’s and women’s field will now be cut for the final four events of the world tour, with 11-time world champion  Kelly Slater  and Australian veteran Sally Fitzgibbons among those missing out.

Olympic champion surfer Carissa Moore: "I’m not ready to pass on the baton just yet"

Carissa Moore, 2024 Team USA Media Summit

As one of the greatest female surfers of all time, five-time world champion Carissa Moore shocked the world when she announced that she was taking a step back from the WSL Championship Tour (CT) earlier this year.

“I’m excited to see what else is out there, outside the jersey,” she told the New York Times as the news broke.

Olympics.com caught up with Moore in New York, four months after she announced her decision, to speak about what life has been like since she hung up that jersey for the time being.

Since 2010, the Hawaiian has spent up to nine months out of every year traveling and competing around the world, flying from Portugal to Australia to Brazil, to Tahiti, Fiji, South Africa, Hawaii and more, to go head-to-head against the world’s best.

Now, and for the first time in 15 years, she is waking up, smelling the flowers (literally), and choosing what her day looks like.

She hasn't gone far from the ocean, though, as she plans to defend her title at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and preparations for that are also in full swing.

“I’m not ready to pass on the baton just yet,” Moore told Olympics.com.

Olympic champion Carissa Moore to step away from competitive surfing after Paris 2024

How to qualify for surfing at Paris 2024

Five-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore of Hawaii surfs during the semfinal of the Oi Rio Pro 2022 at Itauna Beach on June 28, 2022 in Saquarema, Brazil.

Carissa Moore on life since stepping back from the Tour

Since her announcement to take a step back from the tour, Moore has published a book, she’s working on a documentary project, and even took a trip to Japan… without any surfboards.

But, according to the Olympic champion, it’s the “simple” things that she’s enjoying the most.

“Regardless of whether I'm prepping for a competition or putting a jersey on or not, I'm finding some way to get in the water. It just makes me happy,” she said.

“And I like hot yoga. I like spending time with my family, my friends. I like walking. I've been trying to make more time just to walk the dogs with my husband every evening, and right now it's springtime in Hawaii, so all of the flowers are blooming. It smells so saturated. Yeah, that's a must every day.”

But, with Paris 2024 right around the corner, Moore has some Olympic-level training to sprinkle into her schedule.

For the surfers, this year’s Games will be held on the infamous wave called Teahupo’o , also known as ‘The End of the Road’.

The reef break in Tahiti is one of the heaviest and biggest waves that the surfers face on Tour and will likely be substantially larger than what they saw at Tsurigasaki Beach, where surfing at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 went down.

“People have had big falls and big injuries,” Moore said, talking about the wave.

“It makes that fear factor even greater, but you could also get the thrill of your life.”

Ahead of the kick-off of the Games this summer, she plans to spend as much time training there as possible and recently returned from a trip there in March.

“My goal is to try to spend more time being uncomfortable at that wave and surfing all types of conditions.”

Carissa Moore, WSL Tahiti Pro 2023

Carissa Moore floats on her board at the WSL Tahiti Pro event on August 15, 2023 in Teahupo'o, French Polynesia, where the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will hold the surfing competition.

Carissa Moore’s legacy

Moore has seen a lot through her 14 years as a professional surfer, and although she is not quite finished, she is leaving plenty for the athletes that follow.

The first season that men and women received equal prize money for their Championship Tour wins came in 2019, and three years later, after 58 years of the Tour, both men’s and women’s competitions became fully integrated, meaning they would compete on the same waves at the same events, for every stop along the way.

“There have been a handful of women who have been there fighting that for us… I feel very fortunate to have reaped the benefits of that,” she said.

Teahupo’o was deemed ‘too dangerous’ for the women and taken off of their Tour docket in 2006, but “it should have been there all along,” Moore argued.

“If you give us the conditions, we will rise to the occasion.”

Time and time again, the Hawaiian trailblazer has risen to the occasion and broken barriers for the women that follow in her wake.

With her foundation, Moore Aloha , she will continue to work to inspire young girls inside and outside her sport for years to come.

When asked what advice she has for younger athletes, she humbly responded: “be kind to yourself and don't be afraid to fail.

"I think if I look at [myself at a] younger age, she put a lot of pressure on herself to do things right and be perfect. But there's no such thing as perfect. And we learn the most from our failures; from the times that we fall down and we get back up. I just embrace the journey and have fun.

"It's supposed to be fun; have a lot of fun. We do our best and perform our best when we're having fun.”

True crime podcasts are popular in the U.S., particularly among women and those with less formal education

True crime stands out as the most common topic of top-ranked podcasts in the United States, according to a new Pew Research Center study . So who, exactly, listens to true crime podcasts?

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to explore U.S. adults’ views of and experiences with podcasts as a part of the news and information landscape.

To examine the ways Americans get news and information in a digital age, the Center surveyed 5,132 U.S. adults from Dec. 5 to 11, 2022. Everyone who completed the survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the  ATP’s methodology .

In the questionnaire, U.S. adults who said they are currently listening to at least one podcast were asked in an open-ended question to write in the name of the podcast that they listen to most. If respondents answered with the names of more than one podcast, only the first one was coded. In total, 1,563 open-end responses were coded.

Here are  the questions used  in the survey, along with responses, and  its methodology .

As part of the study, the Center also took a close look at key characteristics of top-ranked podcasts. Researchers identified these top podcasts by analyzing daily lists of the top 200 podcasts on Apple Podcasts and Spotify from April 1 to Sept. 30, 2022. The average chart position of each podcast that appeared on either list was calculated, and the top 300 podcasts from each site were included as top podcasts. Researchers identified 451 top podcasts by combining these lists so that podcasts that were among the top 300 on both sites were not counted twice.

A team of trained researchers then analyzed these 451 podcasts to determine podcast affiliation, topic, format and other key characteristics of each podcast. Additional data on episode length and frequency was analyzed after collecting data on all episodes published in 2022 through the Spotify and Apple Podcasts application programming interface.

Here are the detailed tables for this analysis of 451 top-ranked podcasts, and the methodology .

This is the latest analysis in Pew Research Center’s ongoing investigation of the state of news, information and journalism in the digital age, a research program funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, with generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

A bar chart that shows demographic profile and party identification of true crime podcast listeners.

Overall, 34% of U.S. adults who have listened to a podcast in the past year say they regularly listen to podcasts about true crime, according to a 2022 Center survey . But some demographic groups are more likely than others to do so:

  • Among U.S. podcast listeners, women are almost twice as likely as men to regularly listen to true crime podcasts (44% vs. 23%).
  • Podcast listeners with less formal education are more likely than those with higher levels of education to listen to shows about true crime. Looking at podcast listeners who have a high school diploma or less, 45% regularly listen to true crime podcasts. A third of podcast listeners with some college education say the same, as do 27% of those who have at least a bachelor’s degree. This pattern persists even when accounting for age.
  • While women are more likely to listen to true crime podcasts overall, women with lower levels of formal education are the most likely to do so. A majority (57%) of women with a high school diploma or less say they regularly listen to true crime podcasts, compared with 34% of men with the same education level and 36% of women with a college degree.
  • Younger podcast listeners are more likely than the oldest listeners to report tuning in to shows about true crime. Among U.S. podcast listeners ages 18 to 29, 41% regularly listen to true crime podcasts. This compares with 15% of listeners ages 65 and older.

A bar chart showing that across education levels, women are more likely to listen to true crime podcasts than men.

The Center’s new study finds that true crime is the most common topic among top-ranked podcasts – defined as those with the highest average daily rankings on Apple’s and Spotify’s lists of top podcasts in a six-month period in 2022. Almost a quarter (24%) of these top podcasts are primarily about true crime.

us women's tour

True crime podcasts are often investigations into murders, scandals and other criminal events. Serial, which helped to popularize the genre , is a series that provides in-depth investigations into particular crimes or events. Due to its popularity, Serial is often credited for drawing national attention to the conviction of Adnan Syed.

Other top-ranked podcasts in this genre include 20/20, Crime Junkie, Dateline NBC, and My Favorite Murder. Crime Junkie and Dateline NBC are among the most popular podcasts cited by podcast listeners who gave a name for the show they tune in to most – 1% named each of these podcasts.

While true crime is the most common topic among top-ranked podcasts, it is not the most popular topic Americans report listening to, according to the Center’s recent survey . About a third of podcast listeners in the United States (34%) say they regularly listen to podcasts about true crime.

Other topics – such as comedy (47%) and entertainment, pop culture and the arts (46%) – are more popular than true crime.

While the Center’s survey did not specifically ask why podcast listeners turn to specific topics such as true crime, we can look at the reasons that people said they listen to podcasts in general – and among those who said the podcast they listen to most is true crime.

Of those who said their main podcast is about true crime, the most common major reasons for listening were for entertainment (85%) and to have something to listen to while doing something else (84%). They were less likely to cite reasons like learning, hearing other people’s opinions, or staying up to date about current events.

Note: Here are the detailed tables for this analysis of 451 top-ranked podcasts, and the methodology . Here are the questions used for this analysis, and our survey methodology .
