Latest live A1 traffic news

A1 and a1(m) traffic news and real time updates; get the latest info on a1 traffic delays, roadworks, accidents and snow.

A1 (M) motorway

Even though the A1 is just an A road, it is still one of the most important, most busy routes in the UK. At 410 miles in length it certainly has the scale of a motorway, linking together two capitals in the form of London and Edinburgh, as well as many other towns and cities besides.

Inevitably, the A1’s length makes delays almost inevitable, and these are only made worse by the fact that the A1 consists of just two lanes. So if you’re travelling along some (or heaven forbid, all) of it, you could save yourself a lot of time by staying up to date with the latest traffic news and accident updates available on this page.

• What is a smart motorway?

With roadworks seemingly a permanent fixture on the A1, and with the usual mix of incidents and traffic jams to contend with, it’s far from likely that you’ll complete your journey without any delays. And your odds get even worse when the weather intervenes, especially when it snows. But by using the following information, you should be able to improve your odds…

Below you can find all the latest A1 and A1(M) traffic information via our specially built Twitter feed, which draws real-time alerts from the Highways Agency, official police accounts and other traffic news feeds. We’ve also got a live traffic map so you can pick out incidents as they happen, and there’s a list of important intersections as well...

A1 and A1M live traffic map

The A1 passes through North London and over the M25, then keeps heading North past Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Letchworth, Peterborough, Grantham, Newark, Doncaster, Leeds, Harrogate, York, Ripon, Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, Alnwick and Berwick.

•  M25 traffic news

The map below shows live updates on the current problem areas of the A1 and A1M for roadworks, accidents or general congestion causing delays on the road...

A1 and A1(M) History

Dick Turpin and his ilk were the cause of many early hold-ups on the A1 back in the days of stagecoach travel (when it was known as the Great North Road), but you’ll be extremely unlucky to be accosted by a highwayman today. There are plenty of reports of theft of goods and fuel from parked up lorries in certain sections of the A1, but the average motorist can generally expect safe passage.

•  M6 traffic news

However there are still plenty of (often closed) coaching inns along the route that have links to the early days of turnpike travel – including some famous ones like the Ram Jam Inn between Stamford and Grantham.

The A1 was first named as such in 1921 by the Ministry of Transport, but it basically follows a North-South route that has been documented since Roman times.

Passing through Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle and into Northumberland, the A1 is a vital arterial route into and out of the North East. North of Newcastle, some parts of the A1 are still a single carriageway. Road safety campaigners and business leaders are continually lobbying for it to be widened.

Ukrainian Drones Target Moscow and a Russian Border Region, Officials Say

Drone attacks in Russian territory have become more frequent as Ukraine wages a grueling counteroffensive.

  • Share full article

In a close-up of a building, a person is seen through a missing window at the corner of the building. Windows around it are shattered.

By Victoria Kim and Valeriya Safronova

  • Aug. 23, 2023

Russian officials said Ukrainian forces dropped explosives on a Russian village near the border with Ukraine, killing three, and targeted Moscow with drones for a sixth consecutive day on Wednesday.

The attacks appeared to be the latest in a Ukrainian campaign to bring the war to Russia’s citizens across their border.

Drone attacks deep in Russian territory have become more frequent as Ukraine wages a counteroffensive, which has been bogged down by what U.S. and other Western officials say is a misallocation of troops.

In the Russian capital, drones damaged a building under construction in a gleaming skyscraper complex known as Moscow City, which has been hit at least three times in the past month.

The deadly assault on Lavy , a village in the Belgorod region near the border with Ukraine, was the latest in near-daily attacks on the area that have killed at least six others this summer, according to Russian officials. Since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion almost 18 months ago, Ukrainian forces have regularly fired on villages in the region , according to the regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov.

The claims have not been independently verified.

Two other drones were shot down early Wednesday in suburban districts of the Moscow region, the Russian Defense Ministry said on the messaging app Telegram. According to the ministry, the drone that struck Moscow City was electronically jammed and lost control before crashing into the building.

Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment on the episodes, as has been their practice on attacks inside Russia. Asked about the attacks, a representative for the U.S. State Department said that it didn’t encourage them but that “it’s up to Ukraine to decide how to defend itself.”

“Russia started this unprovoked war against Ukraine,” the representative said. “Russia could end it at any time by withdrawing its forces from Ukraine instead of launching brutal attacks against Ukraine’s cities and people every day.”

The stepped-up attacks near the center of power in Moscow have been seen as an attempt to bring the war in Ukraine home to Russia and its citizens. The drone attacks in the Moscow region have not caused injuries or deaths, according to Russian officials.

Built mostly during President Vladimir V. Putin’s time in power, Moscow City has been held up as a symbol of the modernization of Russia’s economy. It houses government ministries as well as finance and tech companies.

Russia’s Federal Agency for Air Transport said that air traffic had been temporarily halted Wednesday morning at nearby airports for safety reasons and that at least two flights had been diverted.

Also early on Wednesday, Russian forces attacked the southern part of Ukraine’s Odesa region with drones, damaging shipping facilities including granaries, according to the regional Ukrainian military administration. Russia has for weeks been targeting Ukraine’s grain export infrastructure after pulling out of the internationally brokered Black Sea grain deal in July. The claims had not been independently verified.

The United States has accused Russia of using chemical weapons , including poison gas, “as a method of warfare” against Ukrainian forces, in violation of a global ban on the use of such weapons.

Russian troops have captured or entered around a half-dozen villages on Ukraine’s eastern front, highlighting the deteriorating situation in the region  for Ukrainian forces as they wait for long-needed U.S. military aid.

Signs of Trauma: As Ukrainian prisoners of war return with physical and psychological wounds stemming from torture by their Russian captors, they are being sent back to active duty — often without adequate treatment .

Patriotism or Survival: As the war drags on, communities in western Ukraine that were steadfast  in their commitment to the war effort have been shaken by the unending violence on the front line.

Resuming U.S. Military Aid: Weapons from the support package, considered “a lifeline” for Ukraine’s military , could be arriving on the battlefield within days . But experts say it could take weeks before there is a direct impact on the war . What would $60 billion buy ?

Crews on Friday started demolishing the Connecticut bridge that was severely damaged when a gas-filled tanker truck crashed on Interstate 95 — causing “horrendous” delays and even closing schools.

Workers arrived at the Fairfield Avenue overpass around 3 a.m. Friday, a day after the fiery crash — with a 13-mile backup reported on the southbound side of the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield, and serious delays also reported northbound and on surrounding routes.

The crash happened when the tanker collided with another commerical vehicle and then a passenger car. Norwalk Mayor Harry W. Rilling said: “We are very grateful that nobody was seriously injured,” and praised state and local workers for their swift effrorts to quell the fire, according to the Hartford Courant .

The damaged section of I-95 is not expected to reopen until Monday at the earliest following the shocking Thursday morning crash, in which a tanker truck packed with 8,500 gallons of gas slammed into a tractor-trailer and a car before bursting into a fireball.

Norwalk Public Schools even closed Friday “due to ongoing traffic concerns and delays.”

People were encouraged to work from home and avoid non-essential travel to ease traffic around the interstate, a major East Coast artery that links New York and New England.

“We’ve scheduled some different staggering work times for people so that they can come in later, maybe go home earlier so we can reduce some of the traffic,” Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said.

“But we’re also asking a lot of our staff to work from home. So we feel that we’ll keep some of the traffic off the road.”

“The heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down and that demolition is going to start first thing [Friday] morning,” Gov. Ned Lamont said Thursday.

The overpass was severely damaged.

Lamont said no one was seriously hurt and urged drivers to stay away from the area, noting “horrendous” traffic which was backed up for miles during the morning rush.

Secondary roads were also jammed — including the Merritt Parkway, from which trucks are barred because its underpasses are too low.

Traffic delays were expected through the weekend.

Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto added, “This bridge is less than 10 years old … and the damage was pretty severe due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker ignited directly underneath the bridge structure. The steel did begin to overheat and warp.”

The fire melted parts of the overpass.

Following the crash, Lamont declared a state of emergency in a bid to prompt federal authorities to reimburse the state for the highway repairs.

“This emergency declaration will help expedite some of the resources needed for us to respond to this situation. I strongly encourage everyone to avoid this area for at least the next few days while the highway remains closed and to stay alert for updates,” Lamont said in a release.

The investigation remains ongoing.

I-95 in Connecticut closed, video shows bridge engulfed in flames following crash: Watch

A multi-vehicle collision on thursday caused a gas tanker to erupt into flames and damage an overpass above i-95 in connecticut, near norwalk..

Authorities in Connecticut have begun demolition work on an Interstate 95 overpass that was damaged in a fiery crash involving multiple vehicles in the early morning hours of Thursday.

The highway remains closed in both directions, the Norwalk Police Department said in an update Friday morning and advised those traveling through Connecticut to use I-84 as an alternate due to heavy congestion in the city.

The busy highway is expected to remain closed until at least Monday, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont had said Thursday evening while authorities attempt to clear up the debris and repave the road.

"Avoid driving in the area," the governor said.

Commuters were advised to use the MetroNorth Railroad, which will have additional rail services, if they need to travel. Norwalk Public Schools remained closed on Friday as authorities deal with ongoing traffic issues.

The Norwalk Police Department and the Connecticut Department of Transportation did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for an update on the demolition.

NBC News reported that demolition work on the overpass began around 8:30 a.m. Friday morning and could take 24 hours or more to complete.

Watch flames: Photos and video show massive fire erupt at iconic Oceanside Pier in California

Why is Interstate 95 in Connecticut closed?

Around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, a multi-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer, a fuel truck and another vehicle took place on the I-95 in southwest Connecticut. The accident caused the gas tanker to erupt into flames and damage an overpass above the interstate in southwest Connecticut.

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said no serious injuries or fatalities were reported from the crash.

Video footage from the incident shows the tanker engulfed in flames underneath a bridge surrounded by black clouds of smoke as firefighters attempt to douse the fire.

The governor declared state of emergency to help "expedite some of the resources needed for us to respond to this situation."

"The bridge was damaged. The heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down," Lamont had said during a news conference Thursday evening.

Interstate 95 is now heavily damaged, creating traffic headache for travelers

Although the overpass was less than 10 years old, according to Connecticut DOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto, it sustained "pretty severe" damage due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker truck when it burst into flames. Gas from the tanker caused the steel within the bridge to overheat and warp, Eucalitto added.

William Turner, state emergency management director, in a news conference Thursday had said that the fire was extinguished. About 6,500 gallons of fuel was burned in the fire, he said, and state environmental agencies are investigating the foam and gas runoff that flowed into the nearby Norwalk River and to empty the remaining 2,000 gallons of gas in the tanker.

Travelers in the area were stuck in traffic for hours as the northbound and southbound lanes near the exit remained closed as of Thursday night.

Interstate 95 is used by more than 100,000 drivers in the state per day as of September, according to Connecticut DOT's traffic data . The highway connects New York City to Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Large tanker catches fire in CT, causes massive traffic delays on I-95 | VIDEO

WABC logo

NORWALK, Conn. -- A multi-vehicle crash involving a fuel truck, tractor-trailer and passenger vehicle on Thursday morning closed down lanes of I-95 in both directions and is causing significant traffic disruptions.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-95 in Norwalk around 5:30 a.m.

The tanker was carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline when it was involved in the crash with a tractor-trailer and a passenger car.

So far no injuries have been reported and officials say there is no threat of a collapse.

"About 6,500 gallons of gasoline have either burned off or runoff, and our teams are conducting a cleanup operation along the Norwalk River. It's a complex situation involving local and state hazardous response teams," said State Emergency Management Director William Turner.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont said he has spoken with Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and federal resources are standing by.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 are expected to stay closed for an extended period of time.

The Norwalk Asst Fire Chief said that the bridge will have be torn down. The roadway will not be able to reopen until demolition is complete.

"We anticipate this area of the highway to be closed for a significant period. Anyone traveling through this area should find alternate routes," Governor Ned Lamont said on X.

The result is a traffic nightmare with thousands of vehicles -- many of them tractor trailers -- being diverted onto local streets.

Monroe County ethics board launches new Sandra Doorley probe over traffic flap

Monroe County's ethics watchdogs plan to investigate District Attorney Sandra Doorley's actions when she was ticketed last week for speeding.

Late Tuesday, Janson McNair, director of the Monroe County Office of Public Integrity and chair of the county's Board of Ethics, said both of those entities would conduct an investigation into Doorley.

"The investigation begins immediately," he said. "We will report the results of our thorough investigation and subsequent recommendations to the appropriate authorities and share them with the public via a press release."

More: Rochester City Council calls for state inquiry into DA Sandra Doorley's conduct in traffic stop

The county's ethics code states that officials "should not use or attempt to use" their official positions "to secure unwarranted privileges or exemptions" for themselves.

Intentional violations of the code may result in removal from office. However, McNair clarified that his office was not empowered to execute this provision, stating that only the governor could do so.

While much of the public ire toward Doorley has focused on her demeanor toward a Webster police officer during an attempted traffic stop, video of the interaction raises ethical issues about not only her words but her intent.

Doorley is being roundly criticized for failing to pull over when the officer, Cameron Crisafulli, pursued her using emergency lights and sirens, and for her contumacious attitude towards the officer upon arrival at her house. Doorley had been going 20 miles over the posted speed limit.

“It isn’t lost on us that if a Black or brown member of the community fled the police and refused to follow instructions, the situation might have met a tragic end, as we have seen so many times in our country," the Working Families Party, which called on Doorley to resign, said in a statement Monday.

Also of significant concern are the words Doorley used during the confrontation with the police officer who was ticketing her. After stating that she is the county's district attorney, Doorley says, "I’m going to prosecute myself. Do you know what I’ll do with the ticket?"

Admittedly, Doorley doesn't answer the question, but the appearance of impropriety is hard to ignore, regardless of the possibility she was being angrily farcical with her comments.

In her position, she could not offer a favorable outcome to any defendant — nor could any of her staff — yet her words could imply that she was planning just that.

In a short video released Monday, Doorley said she intends to self-report to an attorney grievance committee and ask that her actions be investigated. She also said she'll refer the matter to an outside prosecutor.

Doorley has pleaded guilty to the speeding ticket, but a prosecutor could determine whether her refusal to immediately stop for the officer constitutes a separate offense. Doorley admitted to driving 55 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has referred the incident to the state's Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct, which has yet to hear a case partly because of challenges to its legal standing.

What to know about campus protests:.

  • More than 2,000 people have now been arrested at pro-Palestinian protests at colleges across the country.
  • Police operations are ongoing at multiple colleges , including NYU and The New School in New York. At least 30 were arrested at Portland State University, where protesters barricaded themselves inside a library.
  • Pro-Palestinian demonstrations that have rocked college campuses in the United States are now gaining traction across the world, from London, Paris and Rome to Sydney, Tokyo, Beirut and beyond.
  • A NYPD officer accidentally fired a gun inside Columbia University's Hamilton Hall when police entered it to clear it of protesters earlier this week, officials said. City officials said that many of those arrested at campus demonstrations were not affiliated with the schools.
  • President Joe Biden addressed the protests from the White House , hours after dramatic scenes at UCLA, saying students had a right to dissent but not a right to cause chaos.

Protesters, University of Chicago at impasse

Students and staff, protesting at the University of Chicago in support Palestinians in Gaza, are at odds over the term “scholasticide” and cannot agree on a solution to end their encampment, demonstrators said Friday.

A sticking point is the university's refusal to embrace the word “scholasticide” and agree that to the "widely accepted fact   that every university in Gaza has been destroyed by" Israeli forces, according to a statement by the group UChicago United for Palestine.

University of Chicago protestors have been camped out since Monday , and a rep for the school hinted on Friday that administrators might be forced to take action soon.

"On Monday, I stated that we would only intervene if what might have been an exercise of free expression blocks the learning or expression of others or substantially disrupts the functioning or safety of the University," President Paul Alivisatos said in a statement on Friday . "Without an agreement to end the encampment, we have reached that point.

The American Civil Liberties Union went to court today on behalf of at least three people banned from the Indiana University campus after they protested in support of Palestinians, the group said.

Bloomington resident Jasper Wirtshafter, tenured professor Benjamin Robinson and grad student Madeleine Meldrum were demonstrating at Dunn Meadow, a 20-acre campus space that's designated for protests, when they were arrested and later banned, the ACLU said .

More banned people could be added to the lawsuit later, the ACLU said.

An IU rep today said the school does not comment on pending litigation.

Pro-Palestinian campus protests go global

LONDON —  Pro-Palestinian demonstrations  that have  rocked college campuses in the United States  are now gaining traction across the world, from London, Paris and Rome to Sydney, Tokyo, Beirut and beyond.

These protests at schools in major cities around the globe were launched in response to  Israel’s monthslong military assault on the Gaza Strip , but students told NBC News they were also inspired   by the dramatic scenes from colleges in the U.S. in recent weeks.

They have stopped short of the size and intensity of the American encampments, which have  stirred fierce debate  and clashes with both authorities and pro-Israel counterprotesters. But today, police moved in to clear a sit-in that had closed an elite French university — a sign of the  fervent opposition to Israel’s actions felt by many young people  in countries beyond the U.S., its closest ally.

NYPD confirms 'accidental discharge' during Columbia raid

Brittany Kubicko

A sergeant accidentally fired his weapon when New York police raided Columbia University earlier this week to clear out protesters, authorities said today.

The sergeant, who was trying to make sure no one was hiding in a locked office in Hamilton Hall, switched his gun from his dominant right hand to his left, when he fired by mistake, officials said.

No one was hit or hurt by the discharge.

An NYPD spokesperson, Sgt. Tarik Sheppard, defended the department keeping quiet about the incident that happened three days earlier.

"Accidental discharges happen every single year and we average about eight a year and we don't get request (for information) on it," Sheppard told reporters. "If you do ask about it, we'll talk about it like we're doing right now." He added that bodycam video of the accidental discharged would not be released because doing so would go against protocol.

Police arrested while 43 people clearing out a second college in New York City this morning, with officers moving in to remove protesters from The New School.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell told NBC News that protesters were given the options of leaving or being arrested.

Earlier, the NYPD confirmed it was removing protesters from NYU.

Kaz Daughtry, deputy commissioner for operations, said on X that police had moved in at the request of The New School, to assist in dispersing the "illegal encampment inside their university center building and residence hall."

Daughtry shared police video showing officers inside the building addressing the camp. One office tells them: "You got two choices: Right now you're trespassing in this building, that is not a summons," adding that they can leave.

Daughtry also shared a letter from The New School requesting police action, which says protesters have ignored pleas to leave and have damaged university property.

"It is with deep regret that we ask NYPD's help in removing the trespassing individuals," the letter said.

The New School, based on Fifth Avenue, describes itself as a university "for scholarly activists, fearless artists, and convention-defying designers founded in 1919."

The school's biography on X says: "We welcome dissent."

NYPD arrest 13 while clearing 'illegal' encampment at NYU

At least 13 people were arrested this morning while police cleared a pro-Palestinian protest encampment at New York University, NYPD said.

Kaz Daughtry, NYPD deputy commissioner of operations, said in a post on X that police were moving in after NYU "requested our assistance to disperse the illegal encampment on their property.

Daughtry shared footage from a camera worn by an officer as several moved through the encampment advising protesters to leave.

"If you guys want to leave, you're more than welcome," the officer said. "Grab your stuff and go if you'd like to leave."

The clip showed multiple protesters emerging from tents and silently walking away, as a loudspeaker blared a message in the background.

Protest march stops traffic at UNC-Chapel Hill

A pro-Palestinian march at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Pro-Palestinian activists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill stopped traffic with a protest march this morning, where several hundred chanted "long live the intifada," "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," and other slogans.

At least 30 protesters were arrested at UNC-Chapel Hill for allegedly refusing to leave an area when asked and for throwing items at police.

There were two Palestinian intifadas — in 1987, and between 2000 and 2005 — which saw widespread civil disobedience and violence that was met with a strong Israeli military response. In the second intifada, more than 4,000 Palestinians and 1,000 Israelis died, according to  the U.N ., which tallied deaths until 2007.

Since then, the phrase has become part of the lexicon of pro-Palestinian protesters across the world, while different groups interpret the term differently. The Anti-Defamation League  refers  to intifada as a “reference to violent Palestinian uprisings against Israel, while the Council on American-Islamic Relations  says  it is used as “the Arabic word for uprising.” CAIR says using intifada as a term referencing “killing Jews” is a “false claim.

UPenn says it asked Philadelphia officials for help after protests 'escalate'

The University of Pennsylvania said it reached out to city officials in Philadelphia this week after protest activity on and around campus "escalated."

"We have reached out to the City of Philadelphia to ensure we have the necessary resources to keep our community safe. The Mayor’s Office has asked for more information, and we are providing it," the college said in a statement yesterday evening.

An encampment has been on College Green on UPenn’s campus since April 25. The college has told the protesters in the encampment that they are violating its policies and that it was checking the IDs of those involved. Some disciplinary processes have already been started, it said.

Pro-Palestinian students and activists face police officers after protesters were evicted from the library on campus yesterday at Portland State University in Portland, Ore.

Portland police seek protesters after clearing barricaded library twice, arresting 30

Police in Portland are appealing for information on 18 protesters suspected to have barricaded themselves inside Portland State University's library before fleeing the scene.

The Portland Police Bureau said in a series of statements early today that its officers cleared out the library twice following a "days-long occupation," in a police operation in which seven officers sustained minor injuries.

At least 30 protesters were arrested over the course of yesterday, police said, after "trespassers illegally entered the building again despite efforts to secure it." Some have been booked into jail; none have so far been identified.

The PPB added that it will release the identities of the suspects soon.

Police surrounded the building from 6 a.m. (9 a.m. ET) yesterday. After orders to leave were ignored, police said, officers began clearing the building — while they met no resistance, they say they saw "barricades, acts of vandalism including damage to the fire alarm system," and homemade attempts to stop the officers' advance.

This included, police said, "floors coated with paint and soap, or some other slippery substance." One person let off a fire extinguisher at officers, the statement said, before being arrested.

Those still inside then fled the scene, some carrying improvised shields, police said. One "attempted to strike an officer with a shield" and was then arrested.

At 9:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. ET), the building was declared clear and officers left — but protesters then tore down a fence and re-entered the building, prompting yet another police response and eight more arrests.

Campus calls to divest from Israel hinge on a tough question: Where’s the money exactly?

Pro-Palestinian protesters at Columbia University yelled “disclose, divest, we will not stop” as they  broke into Hamilton Hall earlier this week , demanding the school drop any investments in companies doing business in Israel.

But shedding those stakes first requires identifying them, and even that step — disclosure — can get tricky fast, higher education finance experts say. Many large university endowments are murkily set up with thousands of individual funds that have their own rules on how they’re invested, few requirements to share their investments publicly, and third-party managers whose oversight of day-to-day trading can limit campus officials’ knowledge of their own schools’ portfolios.

“I think a lot of people believe an endowment is a piggy bank, and it’s not,” said Bill Guerrero, chief financial officer at the University of Bridgeport, a private university in Connecticut.

How the showdown at Columbia University between protesters and the NYPD unfolded

The first sign that the weekslong standoff at Columbia University  was nearing a dramatic finale came after dusk when New York City police officers clad in riot gear began massing south of the east gate of the venerable Ivy League school.

It was around 9 p.m. Tuesday and the pro-Palestinian protesters standing in front of the wrought-iron gate could see the police gathering and were defiant.

“We will not move. We will not bend,” they chanted. “The occupation has to end.”

The protests had erupted on the campus April 17 when students — demanding a cease-fire in Gaza and that Columbia divest from corporations that could be profiting from the war — set up 50 tents on campus and refused to leave. The police cleared them out the next day, but the protesters returned.

This time, the NYPD was back at Columbia at the request of school administrators after a group of protesters had taken over Hamilton Hall, an on-campus building beside the gate at Amsterdam Avenue and 116th Street.

Pulitzer Prize Board recognizes student journalists on college campuses

Rebecca Cohen

The Pulitzer Prize Board recognized “the tireless efforts of student journalists across our nation’s college campuses” in a statement released yesterday.

The board gave recognition to the journalists “who are covering protests and unrest in the face of great personal and academic risk.”

The statement acknowledged “the extraordinary real-time reporting” of student journalists specifically at Columbia University, who covered the New York City Police Department being called to campus Tuesday night to breach a protester-occupied building.

“In the spirit of press freedom, these students worked to document a major national news event under difficult and dangerous circumstances and at risk of arrest,” the statement said.

Student journalists have been at the forefront of campus protest and encampment coverage as colleges and universities have restricted campus access to only those who are meant to be there, meaning the media has largely been barred.
