The following is a comprehensive checklist of items to take with you on your journey. Don’t feel obligated to take everything on this list (other than the travel essentials), rather take those items that you feel are necessary.

  • 1 Travel Essentials
  • 4 Clothing & Accessories
  • 5 Toiletries/Hygiene
  • 6 Medication
  • 7 Electronics

Travel Essentials

Passport including visa documentation.

  • The Hajj authorities will take your passport upon arrival in Saudi Arabia and will return it to you when departing.

Proof of Vaccination

  • All pilgrims from all countries must produce a valid certificate of vaccination against quadrivalent (A/C/Y/W135) meningococcal meningitis.
  • Depending on what country you’re from, you may also need to have valid certificates of vaccinations against yellow fever and polio.

Read more about vaccinations here .

Passport Sized Photos

  • Take at least 4 additional photographs with you to Saudi Arabia. These may be needed for documents and procedures during your journey.

Saudi riyals

  • Take a minimum of about 450 riyals (£100, $120), which will help you with your immediate expenses upon arrival in Saudi Arabia, until you become familiar with getting your money exchanged locally.
  • Take a sufficient amount of money to cover your expenditure.
  • Draw up a budget before departure.
  • You can exchange your money at the airport upon arrival in Saudi Arabia, at local banks or money exchangers (sarraf) in Makkah and Madinah (recommended).

Debit/Credit Card

  • Can be used to withdraw money from an ATM if your money runs out.

Emergency Contact Numbers

  • Group leader.
  • Your country’s consulate.

Photocopy of Passport

Valid tickets, full travel itinerary, pocket quran.

  • Although copies of the Quran will be available in the mosque, it’s more convenient to have your own. This will allow you to remain seated without the need to get up and find a copy or return it, possibly causing you to lose your spot in the mosque.
  • Don’t forget to remove it from your pocket before you go to the bathroom.
  • There are many pocket-sized books which contain supplications from the Quran and Sunnah which can be recited throughout your journey.
  • Use those du’a books which have translations of each supplication so you know the meaning of what you’re reciting.
  • Make a collection of supplications you’d like to make during your journey, especially during the Day of Arafat , in a notepad in your native language.
  • The Prophet ﷺ
  • Our pious predecessors M
  • Your family and relatives
  • The entire Muslim community, especially those suffering around the world
  • Those who have passed away

Tasbeeh or Digital Dhikr Counter

  • Dhikr counters are very convenient.

Seven-Bead Tasbeeh

  • To keep count of your circuits during Tawaf and Sa’i .
  • Can be used outside the Haram or on roads due to traffic or crowds.
  • It can prove very useful during travel and can double up as a sun shield.
  • You can purchase lightweight and portable travel prayer mats that fit into your pocket or bag.

Compass for the Qibla

  • This may be needed during travel.

Hajj/Umrah Guide Book

  • A pocket-sized Hajj/Umrah guidebook can be referred to just in case you happen to forget something.

Hard-Shell Suitcase

  • A good quality suitcase with a hard case and a built-in locking system is recommended.
  • Avoid soft, vinyl suitcases as these can easily be cut open by thieves or ill-intentioned individuals.
  • Don’t take your favourite suitcase or a very expensive one as it will most certainly be knocked around during your journey and accumulate some wear and tear.
  • Your suitcase should be medium in size (maximum 70 cm in length).
  • Travelling with very large suitcases can be very difficult.

Suitcase Locks & Keys

Luggage tags.

  • If you’re performing Hajj, pack a lightweight backpack or travelling bag for your stay and journey between Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.

Read more about baggage here .

Clothing & Accessories

  • Avoid buying a very thin cotton Ihram – these may stick to you and become uncomfortable if you sweat.
  • The thicker cotton garment or towelling (terry cloth) is preferable and can later double up as towels/blankets etc.
  • Take another set just in case the first set becomes impure.

Safety Pins/Clips for Ihram

  • A safety/pin clip can be used to fasten the upper garment of the Ihram so it does not fall from the shoulders.

Waist Pouch or Neck Pouch

  • Keep your valuables such as money, documents, debit/credit cards and keys in a good quality waist pouch or neck pouch.
  • Wear your pouch at all times and ensure you don’t leave your accommodation without it.
  • Be vigilant of pickpockets and thieves, particularly in crowded areas.
  • Hold on to your pouch in crowded areas to ensure it doesn’t get stolen.
  • Your pouch may be inspected by the authorities at the entrances of the Haramain in Makkah and Madinah.

Comfortable, Loose-Fitting Clothes

  • Take comfortable, loose-fitting garments for when you’re not in Ihram.
  • Take clothes that require little to no ironing, are easily washed and are appropriate for the journey.
  • One set of clothes usually lasts one day.
  • For men, the Saudi Thobe/Jubbah and the Indo-Pak Shalwar Qameez are ideal.
  • For women, the Abaya is the best option.

Bathroom Slippers

  • Take some decent, waterproof slippers that can be worn to the bathroom.

Sandals x 2

  • Whilst you’re in Ihram, your ankles and the top part of your foot (around the shoelace area) need to remain uncovered.
  • A flat, soft pair of walking sandals is recommended.
  • You will be doing a lot of walking during the days of Hajj so they must be comfortable and ideally, waterproof.
  • Buy a pair well in advance of your journey and wear those shoes regularly so they can be worn in and become more comfortable.

Trainer/Sneakers

  • For when you’re not in the state of Ihram.
  • This type of footwear is ideal for performing rites like Rami as they provide grip and balance.

Shoe Bag/String Bag

  • When entering the Haramain, you can put your footwear inside the bag and take it with you to avoid losing them.
  • Your shoes can be left on the racks although there is a chance you may lose them.

Jumper/Jacket

  • If travelling during the winter (November to February), it can get fairly cool during the night and the early part of the morning so you may want to pack a jumper/jacket.
  • To wear with your shoes.
  • The marble tiles in the Haramain can get very cold on occasion so it’s a good idea to wear socks around this area.
  • Wearing sunglasses around the Haramain can protect you from the sun’s glare which often reflects off the white marble, potentially causing problems for those with sensitive eyes.
  • Prayer hat/scarf for men to protect your head from the sun (when not in Ihram).
  • Hijab for women.

Folding Umbrella

  • This can be purchased in Makkah.
  • Buy a white umbrella rather than a black one as black absorbs heat.
  • Avoid buying one with a sharp point as this can cause injury to other pilgrims in crowded areas.
  • You may not be able to take it inside the Haram.

Toiletries/Hygiene

  • Large and Small.
  • Not all hotels provide towels.

Toothbrush/Miswaak

  • Must be fragrance-free in Ihram.
  • Travel-sized toothpaste will be enough.

Shampoo/Conditioner

Bar of soap, liquid soap.

  • Can be used as both shampoo and body wash.

Toilet Rolls/Pocket Tissues

  • Very useful in Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah (during the days of Hajj).
  • Very useful to freshen up, especially during the days of Hajj.

Anti-Bacterial Hand Sanitizer

Hairbrush/comb.

  • Can only be used outside the state of Ihram.

Shaving Machine/Disposable Razors

  • If you want to shave/cut your hair yourself, rather than go to the barber.
  • Don’t pack razors in your hand luggage at the airport as they will be confiscated.

Deodorant/Anti-Perspirant

Perfume/attar.

  • Not to be used in Ihram.

Suction Hooks

  • To hang your Ihram in the cubicle when using the bathroom facilities in Mina and Arafat.

Small Mirror

Nail cutter.

  • Don’t pack this in your hand luggage at the airport as it may be confiscated.

Small Scissors

Sanitary pads, toiletries bag.

  • For your toiletries.

Current/Regular Medication

  • E.g. Inhaler if you have asthma, insulin if you have diabetes etc.

Moisturising cream.

  • For dry skin.

Cream/Balm/Lotion

  • For skin irritation.
  • For cracked/dry skin on heels.

Throat Lozenges/Spray and Cough Syrups

  • For coughs and sore throats.

Vitamin C Supplements

  • Take one daily.

Diarrhoea Tablets

  • E.g. Imodium for an upset stomach.
  • Inner thigh chafing is a problem often faced by men whilst in Ihram.
  • Men are advised to apply Vaseline or another non-scented moisturiser to the area.

Plasters/Blister Plasters/Bandages

  • For cuts, burns and blisters.
  • To minimise the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Muscle Pain Ointments/Creams

  • For muscular/joint aches and pains.
  • E.g. Deep heat muscle rub.

Oral Rehydration Salts

  • To treat dehydration especially due to diarrhoea.
  • Available in powder and tablet form.
  • Those with high blood pressure must seek medical advice before taking it.
  • Tablets can give you an energy boost.
  • Powder can be mixed with water to make a nutritious drink – it’s very refreshing in the heat and crowded areas.

Most over-the-counter medicines are available in pharmacies in Makkah and Madinah. Read more about health and medication here .

Electronics

Universal travel adapter.

  • There is no real standard type of plug – you will come across sockets for 2-pin round plugs and 2-pin flat plugs like the ones used in Europe and 3-pin plug sockets like in the United Kingdom.
  • Some rooms have both 2-pin and 3-pin plug sockets.

Mobile Phone

  • To keep in touch with members of your group, friends and family and people back home.
  • Make sure your phone is unlocked before leaving home.

  • Some travel agents include Saudi sim cards as part of their package.
  • Write down your own mobile phone number and that of other group members in case you get lost.

  • To charge your mobile phone and other electronics.
  • Look for a good quality, lightweight one.
  • Multiple input power banks will allow you to charge more than one device at a time.

Very helpful and practical compilation list of items. JazakaAllah khair kaseerun

Masha Allah Very helpful article

The list is very fantastic it makes life very easy for me for my luggage.

This is a wonderful list, the comments from others really helps. Planning to go first time but unclear about a couple of things. 1. The main luggage stays in the hotel when you travel to Mina so I assume you take only the essentials in a backpack. 2. I read you have to leave your backpack (the essentials i plan to carry) at Mina when you got Arafat. Are the items safe from theft? Can you take the full backpack with you or do you need to leave this in Mina? 3. If you have to leave it, is it best to seperate the packing for the items you will need to take with you to Muzdalifah/Arafat?

Thanks in advance

Masha Allah a very comprehensive list! I have been to umrah several times but going this time with a large group and this is the best list/website i have come across to help prepare for umrah which i am sharing with the group. May Allah reward the authors!

Thank you So much!!!!! Great and useful details for people.

Thanks you so much this is very helpful…. Nice one.

Lot of Thanks.

Thank you very much . Very useful Jazak Allah

Thanks very much, going for the first time, inshaAllah, so this is very useful. I appreciate.

Great list thank you. Sudacreem I also recommend for those people in the state of Ihram you might end up rubbing your thighs together and cause skin to tear causing blisters. So it will be good to have some to help. Including blister plasters or a small first aid kit. Like one of the brother said there are many stores out there. And one thing is a god send during hajj to replace lost salts – take some salted snacks such as Bombay mix / salted nuts etc they are such a blessing to replenish lost Salts. Energy bars. And definitely diaralyte. Multipoint usb charger to help each other and charge many phones in mina. May Allah accept your hajj and umrah. Ameen.

Jazakallahu khairan for your sharing

Jazaakumullah Khairan Appreciate the very thoughtfully developed list of things to take. Very helpful for me and my husband as we finalize our shopping.

Great list indeed, but I do want to say something.

Last year I’ve taken just about all the items listed here that I’ve collected through lists such as this one and I tell you most of it I haven’t used then again better safe than sorry.

1. There are tons of stores and markets around Mecca and you can buy just about anything there except fragrance free stuff that I’ve seen 2. For men I think it best to just buy your daily clothes to wear (thobes are like 15-20 riyal($4.5) on the street). You’re gonna wanna buy some anyways 3. I think over the door hook would be a better option for Mina (that’s just my preference) 4. Bring some plastic bags that you can keep your clothes in while you shower in Mina 5. Barber charges like 10-15 Riyal so no need for machine guys. Besides most of those barbers are poor and your few riyals is well spent trust me 6. I’d recommend Hajj Safe brand of belt or pouch whatever you wanna call it. Reason is because it is wire reinforced and cannot be cut. For men once you fold your Ihram around your waist put your pouch on, clip it in before a final fold of Ihram. This way it will be super tight grip and also help as belt for your bottom piece. 7. Guys please follow the advice about Vaseline. I didn’t and I suffered badly. 8. I recommend you take one large camping towel. It dries super fast and fits in a small ziploc bag 9. Drink hot drinks instead of cold while in Mina and Arafaat. I know it sounds crazy but it works to keep you cool, trust me.

May Allah swt accept all our good deed and forgive our bad ones. Ameen.

Thank you for your comments and input. Did you used a pack bag during Hajj at Mina & Muzdalifah?

Backpack definitely yes – you take your essentials. And if you have room you carry extra water bottles with you 🙂

That is alot of items, however you have carefully carefully thought of the whole process and all items are very relevant and useful. This is good planning. Thank you

Thanks you so much that was very helpful Will plz guide us from where i can buy all these items in karachi

Very useful and relevant. Thank you

Jazak Allaah khayran for this checklist, I have found it super useful

Thank you so much your blog is awesome

A Trip To Mecca: The Best Guide For Muslim Tourists

Whether you’re a Muslim or not, at least once you’ve heard about the city of Mecca . Mecca is a city located in Saudi Arabia that is considered by Muslims to be the holiest place in Islam . Every year, millions of Muslims make a pilgrimage (known as the hajj) to Mecca, and it is also a popular destination for Muslim tourists from all over the world.

Our guide, written by experts will cover everything you need to know about planning a trip to Mecca, including how to get there, where to stay, what to see and do, and how to make the most of your experience. We’ll also provide some valuable tips for staying safe and avoiding cultural misunderstandings.

A Trip To Mecca: The Complete Guide For Muslim Tourists

Introduction: Why Visit Mecca?

Mecca is the holiest city in the Islamic faith and a mandatory pilgrimage site for all able-bodied Muslims. Located in present-day Saudi Arabia, Mecca was where the Prophet Muhammad was born and received the revelation of the Quran. For people who follow Islam, Mecca is a place of great religious significance and a reminder of the central tenet of their faith: the Oneness of God.

For Muslims, the trip to Mecca is a once-in-a-lifetime religious obligation. Every year, millions of Muslims from all over the world make the journey to Mecca. The trip is an opportunity to perform the hajj or pilgrimage, and to stand in solidarity with other Muslims from all walks of life. Mecca is also a place of great historical and cultural significance.

The city is home to the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, as well as the Al-Masjid al-Haram, the largest mosque in the world. For many Muslims, visiting Mecca is a deeply moving and spiritual experience. It is a chance to connect with their religion on a personal level and to feel closer to God.

How to Get There: Flights, Trains, and Buses

The best way to get there is by plane. There are direct flights to Mecca from major airports all over the world, including London, Paris, New York, and Dubai. You can also take a train or bus to Mecca, but these options are less convenient and usually take longer. The journey by bus or train is also more expensive.

Before your trip to Mecca, it is important to check the visa requirements of Saudi Arabia in advance. Citizens of many countries, including the United States, will need to obtain a special visa to enter the country.

Accommodation: Where to Stay in Mecca

When planning a trip to Mecca, it’s important to choose the right place to stay. There are a few things to keep in mind, such as proximity to the holy sites and the overall atmosphere of the hotel. Luckily, there are plenty of great options in Mecca, so you’re sure to find the perfect place for your needs.

If you’re looking for a luxurious and modern hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Mecca is a great choice. It’s located just minutes from the Grand Mosque, making it convenient for those who want to spend time praying and exploring the holy city. The hotel also has an on-site spa and restaurant, so you can relax and enjoy yourself during your stay.

For a more traditional trip , consider staying at the Dar Al Tawhid Hotel. This hotel is located right next to the Grand Mosque, making it easy to get to your prayers on time. The hotel has a more traditional feel, with Arabic architecture and furnishings. However, it still offers all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay, such as an on-site restaurant and laundry service.

Attractions: What to See and Do in Mecca

There are plenty of things to see and do in Mecca, whether you’re interested in religious sightseeing or exploring the city’s culture and history. Here are some of the highlights:

• Visit the Grand Mosque: The Grand Mosque is the holiest site in Islam and a mandatory pilgrimage site for all able-bodied Muslims. It is located in the center of Mecca and is home to the Kaaba, the most sacred object in Islam.

• Explore the Old City: The Old City of Mecca is full of history and culture. wander through the narrow streets and alleyways and soak up the atmosphere. Be sure to visit the King Fahd Gate, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

• Visit the Museum of Islamic Art: The Museum of Islamic Art is located in the Old City of Mecca and houses a collection of artifacts from the Islamic world. This is a great place to learn more about the history and culture of Islam.

• Go shopping: Mecca is a shopper’s paradise, with plenty of malls and markets to explore. For a truly unique shopping experience, head to the Gold Souk, where you can find everything from gold jewelry to traditional Arabic sweets.

• Take a day trip: Mecca is located close to many other interesting places in Saudi Arabia. Consider taking a day trip to Jeddah, the Red Sea, or Mada’in Saleh.

Food Guide: What To Eat While in Mecca

I think we can all agree that we would not be able to enjoy our trip to Mecca or any other city without the right food. What to eat in Mecca? There are many great options for food lovers, whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a sit-down meal.

If you’re looking for something quick and easy, consider grabbing a shawarma from one of the many street vendors in the city. Shawarma is a type of kebab that is very popular in the Middle East . It’s made with chicken, lamb, or beef that is cooked on a spit and then shredded and served in a pita bread with salad and sauce.

For a sit-down meal, there are plenty of great restaurants to choose from. If you’re looking for traditional Arabic cuisine, try Al-Baik. This restaurant is known for its delicious chicken dishes, and it has several locations throughout the city.

Tips for Staying Safe and Avoiding Cultural Misunderstandings

As with any travel destination , there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here are some tips for staying safe while in Mecca:

• Dress modestly: Remember that you are visiting a holy city, so it is important to dress respectfully. Women should cover their hair and wear loose-fitting clothing that covers their arms and legs. Men should also dress modestly, with long pants and shirts that cover the chest and shoulders.

• Don’t take photos of people without permission: Many people consider it disrespectful to take photos of people without their permission, so be sure to ask before taking any photos.

• Don’t touch or point at the Kaaba: The Kaaba is the most sacred site in Islam, and it is considered disrespectful to touch or point at it. If you want to take a photo of the Kaaba, be sure to do so from a distance.

• Don’t drink alcohol: Alcohol is not allowed in Saudi Arabia, so be sure to abstain while in Mecca.

• Don’t use drugs: Drug use is illegal in Saudi Arabia and can lead to stiff penalties, including jail time.

• Don’t lose your temper: It’s important to remain calm and respectful while you’re enjoying your trip to Mecca, even if you don’t agree with everything you see or hear while in Mecca. Losing your temper could lead to a misunderstanding or even a dangerous situation.

Can Non-Muslims Visit Mecca?

Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter Mecca. The only exceptions are diplomats and other officials who need to enter for business reasons. Even they are required to respect the religious customs of the city. Muslims who are not on a pilgrimage are also not allowed into Mecca. The holy city is reserved for those who are performing the pilgrimage rites.

Anyone caught trying to enter Mecca without permission can be arrested and deported. There have been some recent changes, however. In 2019, Saudi Arabia began issuing visas to non-Muslim tourists from 49 countries. Mecca is only accessible by Muslims, who often describe the moment they first lay eyes on the city's sacred Kaaba as an overwhelmingly emotional experience. For those living outside the Kingdom, a visit to Mecca – generally spelt 'Makkah' by Muslims and in Saudi Arabia – is a lifelong dream. Coming here to perform the hajj pilgrimage is a religious obligation for all Muslims who are financially and physically able to do so.

What are the requirements for traveling to Mecca? passport and rules

What are the requirements.

Muslim pilgrimage to the Mecca once a year. The most important of them all is the so-called Hajj, pilgrimage that takes place in a particular month. During the rest of the year, other pilgrimages take place, but these are considered minor and are not mandatory.

There are some requirements to travel to the Mecca and make the pilgrimage. The first one is almost tacit: to be a Muslim. Non-Muslims ‘unfaithful’ or are banned from this city. The next requirement to travel to the Mecca is to be an adult, male or female and have the possibility, whether economic to make the pilgrimage.

If yoy want know about travel to mecca enter here

requirements for traveling to Mecca

The following requirements to travel to the Mecca are quite , such as being healthy and being an adult, means mature, in order to understand the meaning of the pilgrimage to Mecca. In addition, the believer must be free and be able to make the pilgrimage without any problem at all.

Another group of the requirements to travel to Mecca is of a financial nature: being able to pay for the round trip, as well as supporting your family during the time the believer is absent from the house. This is one of the most important requirements since the pilgrimage to Mecca is expensive. To carry out this Muslim rite matter, several believers dedicate an important part of their lives saving money to make it possible.

Some believers do not have the chance to raise enough money to perform the rite. That is why there are several foundations and organizations around the world that donate money to pay for travel and lodging for some rigorously selected believers, during the days when the pilgrimage lasts. In some cases, the foundations get money from the sponsors, while in other cases, they get it from the government.

For the sponsors, offering the pilgrimage of another believer, it is like giving them a blessing, since they are giving them the opportunity to live a unique experience and that will be of great benefit to their spirituality. Among the requirements to travel to Mecca under this scheme, it is precisely not having the money to do so. In addition, you have to be over 40 and converted to Islam. This foundations treat believers to live the spiritual experience this rite gives, and the idea is to favor the less privileged. For example, they try to pay for the trip to the elderly, since it is considered that he or she will be less likely to make the pilgrimage in the remaining time of their life.

These are not the only requirements to travel to the Mecca. Apart from the economic barrier, there is another important barrier, which is the permission to enter the country. Saudi Arabia does not issue a tourist visa, nor is tourism allowed on its border, because of this, a limited amount of fees are given to each country, in proportion to the number of Muslims living in the country, so that they can Make the pilgrimage. In this way, Muslims who do not live in Mecca or Saudi Arabia can enter to make the pilgrimage.

There are other requirements to travel to Mecca of a religious nature. This is due to the fact that there are three ways to make the pilgrimage: one for those who live in the same city, another for those who live outside, as long as they do not live more than 88 kilometers from it, and another for those who live more than 88 kilometers of it. As the latter is the most important, important characteristics will be mentioned.

It has two parts, the first one has 5 defined rites, like consecration as a pilgrim, circling around the Kaaba, praying after turning around the Kaaba, running between two points and finally shaving the mustache and with the haircut. The second part has more requirements.

During the first rite of the pilgrimage, the believer has to have every intention of finding God during the pilgrimage, wearing a special costume and saying the prayer. For the second rite, seven laps must have around the black stone, with departure and arrival in it. Immediately after that, the prayer must take pleasure in front of a monument. After the run between the two points between which it is believed that Agan ran to get water for Ishmael takes place. To end the rite, the fifth stop is to have a little haircut, shave your mustache or beard.

Pilgrim Pack: Hajj and Umrah Amenity Kits for Travelers Heading to Mecca

 width=

As Muslims migrate for hajj, airlines showcase their hospitality with care packages crafted for the occasion.

Every year, Muslims from around the world travel for hajj, a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Mecca. With two-thirds of pilgrims living outside of Saudi Arabia, 94 percent make their journey by airplane (others by land and sea). During this period – between mid-July and mid-August – last year, Travelport says air travel increased by 20 percent compared to 2017, amounting to around two million passengers.

Flights to Jeddah and Medina spring up for the migration. And this year, Malaysia Airlines launched Amal, an airline dedicated to serving individuals traveling for hajj and umrah (another Islamic pilgrimage that is undertaken at virtually any other time of year). With many pilgrims following strict diets and rituals without exception during air travel, airlines serving Muslim passengers have to pay special attention to ensure flight experiences – and amenity kits – are permissible.

Formia has created hajj amenity kits for Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways that contain items such as counting beads, nonslip prayer mats, stone pouches, socks and wet wipes. “These kits are developed around the needs of pilgrims traveling to the holy sites,” says Stefanie Chung, marketing officer at Formia. The company works with Hajj Safe to ensure details are mindful of Muslim travelers’ needs, such as wet wipes that are fragrance- and alcohol-free.

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 anticipates the number of pilgrims to rise to 30 million by 2030.

“A huge part of our product development included talking and working with professionals who have already developed products for Muslims, in particular for hajj and umrah. They were able to communicate to us what we can do to help develop the right items,” Chung says.

Merging style and functionality, Formia’s hajj comfort kit for Turkish Airlines is minimalistic in design: The charcoal-gray bag is compact and easy to carry, and transforms into a larger bag that can hold a pair of shoes.

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 anticipates the number of pilgrims to rise to 30 million by 2030, thereby opening up an opportunity to build up tourism in the country. And as this demographic grows, Formia expects airline demand for specialized amenity kits will too.

“Pilgrim Pack” was originally published in the 9.3 June/July issue of  APEX Experience   magazine.

In this article, we will explore the advantages and disadvantages of Mecca tour and travels agencies, offer tips to choose the right agency, and address frequently asked questions.

Mecca Tour and Travels Agency

The Mecca tour and travel agencies specialize in organizing and coordinating pilgrimage trips to the holy city of Mecca. These agencies understand the significance and intricacies of the pilgrimage, ensuring that pilgrims have a hassle-free and spiritually enriching experience. They offer a range of services, including visa processing, flight and accommodation arrangements, transportation, guided tours, and assistance with rituals and ceremonies.

Firstly, expertise and experience.

The Mecca tour and travel agencies possess in-depth knowledge and experience in organizing pilgrimage trips. They are well-versed in the rituals, customs, and regulations associated with the pilgrimage, ensuring a smooth and seamless journey for the pilgrims.

Secondly, Convenience and Time-Saving

Planning a pilgrimage to Mecca requires meticulous attention to detail. By engaging a tour and travel agency, pilgrims can delegate the logistical challenges to professionals, allowing them to focus on their spiritual journey and personal reflections.

Thirdly, Local Support

The Mecca tour and travels agency has established networks and partnerships with local service providers, ensuring access to reliable transportation , accommodation, and guides.

This local support enhances the overall pilgrimage experience, providing pilgrims with peace of mind.

Disadvantages of Mecca Tour and Travels Agency

Firstly, cost.

Engaging a tour and travel agency involves additional expenses compared to organizing the pilgrimage independently. The agency’s fees, along with the package cost , may strain the budget of some pilgrims.

Secondly, Lack of Flexibility

Tour packages offered by agencies often have fixed itineraries and schedules. This may limit the flexibility for pilgrims who prefer a more personalized experience or wish to explore additional destinations beyond Mecca.

Tips to Choose Mecca Tour and Travels Agency

  • Research and Reputation:

Conduct thorough research to identify reputable Mecca tour and travel agencies. Read reviews, seek recommendations from fellow pilgrims, and assess their track record in delivering high-quality services .

  • Accreditation and Certification:

Ensure that the agency is accredited by relevant authorities and holds the necessary certifications. This guarantees their compliance with legal and ethical standards, assuring a reliable and trustworthy service.

  • Customization Options:

Look for agencies that offer flexible tour packages, allowing customization based on individual preferences and requirements. This ensures a personalized experience tailored to your needs.

Q1: How early should I book my pilgrimage with a Mecca tour and travel agency?

A1: It is recommended to book your pilgrimage well in advance, preferably several months before your intended travel date. This allows ample time for visa processing, flight, and accommodation arrangements, and ensures availability during peak seasons.

Q2: Are Mecca tour and travel agencies only for Muslims?

A2: While Mecca tour and travel agencies primarily cater to Muslims undertaking the Umrah or Hajj , they may also offer services for non-Muslims interested in exploring the cultural and historical aspects of Mecca.

In conclusion, A Mecca tour and travel agency can significantly enhance your pilgrimage experience by handling the logistical aspects and providing expert guidance. However, it is essential to carefully evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of engaging such an agency, considering factors like cost, flexibility, and personal preferences. By following the tips provided and making an informed decision, you can choose a reliable agency that will help you embark on a memorable and spiritually fulfilling journey to Mecca.

Routine vaccines

Recommendations.

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

  • Chickenpox (Varicella)
  • Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis
  • Flu (influenza)
  • Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)

Immunization schedules

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

COVID-19 vaccine

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Saudi Arabia.

Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.

Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Saudi Arabia take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

Malaria information for Saudi Arabia.

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to  CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .

Measles (Rubeola) - CDC Yellow Book

Meningitis (Meningococcal disease)

Required  for all travelers going to Saudi Arabia to take part in the Hajj or Umrah. See the  Saudi Arabia: Hajj/Umrah Pilgrimage  Yellow Book section for more information.

Rabid dogs are commonly found in Saudi Arabia. However, if you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Saudi Arabia, rabies treatment is often available.

Consider rabies vaccination before your trip if your activities mean you will be around dogs or wildlife.

Travelers more likely to encounter rabid animals include

  • Campers, adventure travelers, or cave explorers (spelunkers)
  • Veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers handling animal specimens
  • Visitors to rural areas

Since children are more likely to be bitten or scratched by a dog or other animals, consider rabies vaccination for children traveling to Saudi Arabia.

Rabies - CDC Yellow Book

Recommended for most travelers, especially those staying with friends or relatives or visiting smaller cities or rural areas.

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Saudi Arabia, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene | Healthy Water
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the  Department of State Country Information Pages  for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Saudi Arabia. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Saudi Arabia include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection that can be spread in fresh water, is found in Saudi Arabia. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Saudi Arabia’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Malaria is a risk in some parts of Saudi Arabia. If you are going to a risk area, fill your malaria prescription before you leave, and take enough with you for the entire length of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some need to be started before you leave.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Saudi Arabia may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Saudi Arabia, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Helpful Resources

Road Safety Overseas (Information from the US Department of State): Includes tips on driving in other countries, International Driving Permits, auto insurance, and other resources.

The Association for International Road Travel has country-specific Road Travel Reports available for most countries for a minimal fee.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Saudi Arabia for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

If your doctor prescribed antimalarial medicine for your trip, keep taking the rest of your pills after you return home. If you stop taking your medicine too soon, you could still get sick.

Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. If you become ill with a fever either while traveling in a malaria-risk area or after you return home (for up to 1 year), you should seek immediate medical attention and should tell the doctor about your travel history.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

What is Eid al-Fitr and how do Muslims celebrate the Islamic holiday?

Muslims around the world will soon bid farewell to the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and start celebrating the holiday of Eid al-Fitr. Eid is marked with congregational prayers and festivities that typically include family visits, gatherings and new clothes.

This year, Eid will come just after the Israel-Hamas war crosses the somber milestone of having stretched on for half a year. During Ramadan, as Muslims around the world savored the traditions of their diverse communities , advocacy, prayers and charity for Palestinians in Gaza were high on the minds of many.

What’s Eid al-Fitr? It’s an Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the month when devout Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset. Ramadan is a time of increased worship, charity, and good deeds.

Eid al-Fitr means the feast, or festival, of breaking the fast.

When is Eid al Fitr? Islam follows a lunar calendar and so Ramadan and Eid cycle through the seasons. This year, the first day of Eid al-Fitr is expected to be on or around April 10; the exact date may vary among countries and Muslim communities.

What are some common Eid greetings? Eid Mubarak, or Blessed Eid, and Happy Eid.

What are some of the traditions and customs associated with Eid al-Fitr? In Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, many people embark on an exodus to their hometowns to celebrate the holiday with loved ones. This year, an estimated 193.6 million travelers are expected to crisscross the vast archipelago for Eid in a homecoming tradition known locally as “mudik.”

In the past two years of Eid celebrations, Indonesians crammed into trains, ferries, buses and onto motorcycles as they poured out of major cities amid severe traffic congestion to return to their villages to celebrate the holiday with families. Flights were overbooked and anxious relatives, weighed down with boxes of gifts, formed long lines at bus and train stations for the journeys.

Before the holiday, popular markets teem with shoppers buying clothes, shoes, cookies and sweets.

In Malaysia, Muslims also have a homecoming tradition for Eid. The first day usually begins with a morning prayer in the mosque, seeking forgiveness from family and friends, and visiting loved ones’ graves.

There’s an “open house” spirit that sees friends and families trading visits to celebrate Eid and enjoy traditional delicacies such as ketupat, rice cooked in a palm leaf pouch, and rendang, a meat dish stewed in spices and braised in coconut milk.

Older Muslims give money in green packets to children and guests who visit their homes.

In Egypt, families partake in Eid prayers amid a festive atmosphere. Many visit relatives, friends or neighbors and some travel to vacation spots. Children, usually wearing new Eid outfits, receive traditional cash gifts known as “eidiya.”

Making or buying Eid cookies dusted with powdered sugar is another fixture of marking the holiday in the country.

In the United States, where Muslims make up an ethnically and racially diverse minority, many come together for Eid prayers and for festivals featuring fun activities for children and families. These often include such things as face painting and balloon twisting.
