Ocala is one of the beating hearts of Central Florida. Surrounded by lush, tropical nature, the city is a thriving, vibrant community that is never very far from the coasts in either direction. Easy to get to from Orlando and packed with things to do, Ocala is known for its horse culture, natural beauty, historic downtown, culture, and so much more.

Affectionately called the " Horse Capital of the World ," Ocala is known for its thoroughbred horses. Ocala, and Marion County overall, is home to more horses than anywhere else in the country. As such, it has produced some of the biggest names in horse racing. But even if you're not interested in horses on a professional level, Ocala has plenty of leisure riding trails and experiences to discover.

Ocala is also home to the Ocala National Forest, which has hundreds of miles of hiking trails, hundreds of lakes, and rivers. It's also one of the best spots in Florida to try to spot manatees .

Historic downtown Ocala is known for its town square, restaurants, shopping, and historic theaters. Speaking of theater, the Ocala Civic Theatre is one of the largest community theaters in Florida. Nearby, the Appleton Museum of Art has 24,000 art pieces on display.

Any equestrian's first stop in Central Florida has to be the city of Ocala. Ocala is the veritable horse country of Florida. The city is one of only a handful of thoroughbred centers in the entire world, with 600 thoroughbred horse farms that have produced six Horses of the Year, among horses that have won many other awards.

You'll have your pick of horse farms in Ocala, but one of the best is Gypsy Gold Horse Farm, home to the first Gypsy Vanner Horses in the United States. These are among the most beautiful horses in the world, known for their majestic manes, free-flowing tails, and shaggy "boots" that flow down from their knees.

A visit to the farm is not complete without a tour, which will teach visitors all about the traits and history of this beautiful breed of horses. The grounds of the farm are strikingly beautiful, as well, with ancient trees that are draped with Spanish moss.

Sholom Park is a sprawling 44-acre botanical garden in Ocala. The privately owned park was designed after its owners made a visit to the Boston Gardens and were so impressed, they had to bring a sanctuary back down to Florida. Today it is a center of reflection and natural immersion. Its name, after all, is the Hebrew word for "peace."

Within the park are more than two miles of paved trails, and a habitat that fosters more than 250 species of plants and trees. Also in the park are beautifully landscaped gardens, including a butterfly garden. A Ginger Garden features several types of ginger plants that bloom throughout the year.

One of the highlights of Sholom Park is its Enchanted Forest, a 0.18-mile paved trail that unfolds underneath an arch of beautiful trees. The path leads to a delightful, babbling koi pond. Best to bring your binoculars on a trip to the park, as Sholom Park brings dozens of bird species year-round.

Drag racing fans will want to carve out some time to visit the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing. Opened in 1984, this tourist attraction takes visitors through the history of the sport, through its collection of 90 racing cars.

Beyond that, the museum has an additional 50 cars in its Antique Car section. More than a museum, the space is actually the site of the Drag Racing Hall of Fame.

So what exactly is drag racing and who is Don Garlits? Excellent questions. Drag racing is a style of auto racing in which two cars or motorcycles compete two at a time to see who finishes first. Unlike other racetracks, the course is usually straight, and vehicles go from a standing start.

Don Garlits is an American race car driver and is actually considered to be the founder of drag racing. He developed the Swamp Rat vehicle, which would go on to revolutionize the drag racing sport.

One of the largest springs in the country flows just outside Ocala. The Silver River has been a source of life for Florida dating back more than 10,000 years. But the springs became one of the top destinations in Florida in the early 19th century.

Today the state park and the Silver River continue to be among the top places to visit in Central Florida, particularly thanks to the famous glass-bottom boats that allow travelers to get an up-close peek at the wildlife underneath the water's surface.

Cruise the crystalline river by boat or kayak, under the heavy drayage of the Spanish moss-draped trees. The park extends nearly 5,000 acres and is teeming with species like armadillos, deer, turkeys, and foxes. The forests are home to bobcat and black bears, while the river hums with alligators, turtles, and manatees. Birding is popular here, too, and the park is a part of the Great Florida Birding & Wildlife Trail.

Among other things to do at the park are hiking, biking, camping, and horseback riding.

The flatlands of Florida aren't exactly known for their mountain biking terrain, but Ocala may be the exception. Santos Trailhead & Campground has some of the most famous mountain biking in Florida.

Home to more than 80 miles of single-track trails, the park has a course for everyone, from beginners to the most expert. The course is located in a lime rock quarry, along with plenty of wooden features, which amps up the terrain in an otherwise flat destination.

But you don't have to be interested in mountain biking to have fun at Santos. The Trailhead also has campgrounds and more than 60 miles of equestrian trails .

Part of the Florida National Scenic Trail courses through, as well, running toward the Ocala National Forest. The trail is one of only 11 National Scenic Trails in the nation. The entirety of the trail runs 1,300 miles from the Gulf National Seashore to the Fakahatchee Strand, traversing nearly the entire state.

At the heart of Florida's horse country is the thriving, charming core of Historic Downtown Ocala. Marked by the beautiful downtown square at its center, the historic district is the prime place in the city for shopping, dining, and entertainment. And much of it happens right here around the square and its lovely gazebo, which often acts as a venue for live music.

The walkable downtown is packed with great restaurants and lovely boutique shopping. In fact, Magnolia Avenue has some of the best locally owned boutiques. Magnolia Avenue is also where you can see the Marion Theatre, which dates back more than seven decades and is done up in Floridian Art Deco style.

Downtown Ocala is home to the Tuscawilla Art Park, too, which has beautiful sculptures. If you're interested in art, Ocala hosts a monthly First Friday Art Walk. Gather at the main square before heading off into downtown to explore the many works of art and galleries.

The sprawling Appleton Museum of Art is a jewel of Central Florida. Packed with more than 24,000 objects, the 81,000-square-foot museum is brimming with masterpieces from the past and present. The gleaming white marble museum is also home to an outdoor sculpture garden, a beautiful courtyard, and fountain.

An impressive permanent collection has art by native Florida artists, as well as those with a focus on equine art, which is fitting given Ocala's position as one of the main horse capitals in the world. Appleton Museum of Art also has a European collection, Asian, Pre-Columbian, African, and modern art.

Throughout the year, visitors can expect a rotating series of temporary exhibitions, as well. The museum also has themed tours and a calendar of musical events throughout the year. The art museum is part of a cultural complex that also includes the Ocala Civic Theatre.

Part of Ocala's Historic Downtown is the vibrant Reilly Arts Center, a house of culture, theater, and community. The lavender-colored Art Deco venue has more than 700 seats and is known for its calendar of concerts, events, and other tributes to the arts.

The Reilly Arts Center is home to the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. Its other performances have included everything from Dueling Pianos to dance performances, Billy Joel, Judy Collins, and many other world-renowned acts.

Part of the theater is The Marion, a historic film house that screens foreign films, documentaries, and Hollywood classics. It also puts on concerts that range from blues and classical to rock and jazz.

A perfect evening in Historic Downtown Ocala would start at the main square and head to one of the many dynamic restaurants in town before taking in a movie or a live music performance at The Reilly Arts Center.

The Ocala National Forest is part of a trio of national forests that together make up nearly 1.2 million acres. Translation? If you want to see some serious Floridian wilderness, a visit to the Ocala National Forest is a must. Within the combined parks are 500,000 acres of wetlands and more than 85,000 acres of federal wilderness. Trails abound, with more than 1,400 miles of them, as well.

The closest one to Ocala is the Ocala National Forest. Brace yourself for turquoise-colored springs and lakes, winding rivers, lush plants, and hundreds of animals. Within Ocala National Forest are more than 600 lakes and rivers, where visitors can swim, snorkel, canoe, and even spot a manatee or two.

Camping in Ocala National Forest is a treat. The park has 14 campgrounds scattered throughout. Other things to do include biking, horseback riding, fishing, and even scenic driving. The forest has 100 miles of paved roads, which means you're never very far from an iconic viewpoint or photo opportunity.

Florida is oozing with history, and not all of it is particularly good. The 40-acre Fort King Historic Landmark sits at the original site of Fort King, which was a military post during the Second Seminole War.

The native inhabitants of this part of Florida were opposed to U.S. occupation, and thus resulted in one of the longest and most expensive wars against the native residents of the land.

The U.S. won the war, and Fort King was given to what then became Marion County. It was the county seat and the first county courthouse. Today it operates as a living history park to teach visitors about life in this part of Florida in the 19th century.

The Ocala Civic Theatre has been a community institution for more than 70 years. Part of the Appleton Cultural Center, which includes the Appleton Museum, the theater is one of the largest community theaters in the state of Florida.

The theater produces more than 12 productions each season, each of which runs for three weeks. Touring companies are also hosted at the theater. Beyond performances, the Ocala Civic Theatre hosts a year-round education program teaching on-site classes for people as young as age five.

I explored Ocala/Marion County for two days, enjoying its nature charms and growing food scene, and I’m sharing them all here.

2 Day Trip in Ocala/Marion County Itinerary

Ocala/marion county day 1 trip itinerary, big lee’s – serious about barbecue.

Start your 2 day trip in Ocala/Marion County by having lunch at Big Lee’s Barbecue, a popular food trailer serving Southern smoked BBQ.

Did you know? The name Big Lee is a tribute to owner Rashad Jones’ wife’s uncle, Leon (nicknamed Big Lee), who was the inspiration for Rashad to pursue his passion for BBQ after he saw Leon’s skills in the smoker.

Try to arrive when they open at 11:30am, or even earlier, as there are normally lineups. Big Lee’s Barbecue was already popular among locals, then it got even bigger.

In 2017, owner and pitmaster Rashad Jones won celebrity chef Guy Fieri show, “Guy’s Big Project”, in Food Network which had him hosting his own Food Network Show, “Eat Sleep BBQ”.

Big Lee’s Barbecue is most known for brisket, burnt ends and massive beef ribs. For the beef ribs, you really need to come early (or pre-order ahead). I arrived around 12:15pm and they were sold out already.

I LOVE briskets! This first started after a barbecue tour I did in Austin, Texas . After which, I’ve always been on the lookout for briskets. I always choose the moist part, and the one here were spot on: flavourful, fatty and moist.

They use kiln-dried Central Florida oak wood to smoke the meats.

If you want to take it to the next level, get the burnt ends which are taken from the fattier part of the brisket and not a lot of BBQ joints offer them.

I loved that their burnt ends are the dry version as I’ve always felt that the sauce took away from just enjoying the goodness of the meat.

Silver Springs State Park

After lunch, head over to Silver Springs State Park, one of the most popular attractions in Ocala/Marion County.

Did you know? This 150-acre state park was formerly a theme park called Silver Springs Nature Theme Park.

The must-do activity here is the glass bottom boat tour which is one of Florida’s oldest attraction and a very unique experience. It was definitely a first time for me.

You enter a boat and at the center is a long rectangular glass floor so riders can see underwater.

When you do the tour, it becomes evident why the springs is called Silver Springs. When the sun hits the cyprus trees under the water, it sparkles like silver.

During the tour, you’ll also get the opportunity to see some wildlife, usually alligators and birds. The guides are quick to point out animals as they see them.

I liked how different this tour was. Whereas most boat tours pointed out things around you, this tour leveraged the glass bottom and mostly talked about things underwater. You will even see a rowboat brought by early Spanish settlers underwater.

It was interesting to learn that Silver Springs has been used in films like The Creature from the Black Lagoon (the guide will point out the 33-feet deep section where the creature lived), and even James Bond movie “I Spy”.

You can also wander around the park. It doubles as a sculpture park with various art pieces around the park. Nature trails are also available for a leisurely walk.

Legend has it if you took a photo with the twisted Cyprus tree, it would bring you 5 years of good luck. That means you need to come back here every 5 years!

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Silver Springs

Before dinner, check-in at Holiday Inn Express Silver Springs which is a few minutes drive from Silver Springs State Park.

Here you can rest and freshen up, or even hit the gym or pool, before going to dinner. They provide complimentary water, coffee and tea in the lobby all day.

I enjoyed the King Bed Room with Spa Bath because it has the jacuzzi hot tub which I used before I going to sleep.

SKY Fine Dining

For dinner, head to SKY Fine Dining, one of the best restaurants in Ocala and Florida Trend’s Golden Spoon winner 10 years in a row to date, from 2010-2019!

Located on the top floor of Holiday Inn & Suites Ocala Conference Center hotel, you can enjoy delicious Asian-inspired food with views of the city.

When you exit the elevator, you will be surprised with the interior of the restaurant as it is decked with Asian statues and symbols (Buddha, Chinese dragon, lucky cat, etc) in a relaxed yet intimate setting.

I can honestly say that it was the first time I’ve seen a Holiday Inn have a restaurant like this.

For drinks, they have a variety of specialty cocktails made in-house but also a wide selection of spirits.

I was very impressed to learn that they even carry the limited/rare whiskey selection including the discontinued Nikka Coffey Malt whiskey, which I love.

For appetizers, a safe yet delicious choice is the calamari, which had a nice light breading that doesn’t take away from the squid.

Chef Emil has done a great job incorporating Asian elements to the dishes.

I was very impressed with their tuna bruschetta as they were able to take a traditional Italian dish and make a proper Asian twist to it.

Instead of the usual olive oil and salt, they’ve used edamame puree and sweet soy aioli. And the common tomato topping was replaced with an Asian mango salsa.

What you get is a flavour explosion of sweet, salty, sour and umami.

Be sure to also check out their Specials Menu which have things like Bacon Wrapper Scallops with a unique blueberry BBQ Sauce.

Meat lovers would enjoy their steaks using U.S. Prime Beef. I enjoyed the Chef’s Cut New York Strip Steak which was perfectly cooked and came with a nice Asian twist of house specialty soy.

One thing about Marion County is they are known for producing blueberries so you’ll fine the use of blueberries in their cuisine quite popular.

You’ll definitely want to try Pan Seared Citrus Scallops, which I found to be their most creative fusion dish. Perfectly seared scallops drizzled with sweet coconut sauce.

It comes with the blueberry jasmine rice where the rice was cooked with fresh blueberry juice, which gives it that purple color.

The blueberry jasmine rice was very interesting and unique as you really taste the blueberry!

You must try the bread pudding here. I’ve had a lot of bread puddings, and this was the best one I’ve had to date. They use croissants instead of regular bread, and the result was mind-blowing!

After dinner, head back to the hotel, relax on the jacuzzi hot tub and have a good sleep.

Ocala/Marion County Day 2 Trip Itinerary

Symmetry coffee & crepes.

Start your second day by heading to Downtown Ocala to Symmetry Coffee & Crepes, a local gourmet cafe specializing in locally roasted coffees and crepes.

This spot is perfect for coffee lovers. They have a wide variety of beans from all over the world.

They roast their own beans – you can even see their roastery in the cafe. They use the Slayer machine for their espresso drinks.

They also have a Slow Bar with 6 different Manual Brewing Options: Chemex, V-60, Aeropress, Kalita Wave, French Press and Syphon.

You can see at the counter which beans you can choose like Agua De Dios, Yul/Papua New Guinea and Ethiopia Yirgacheffe.

I’m glad they specialize in crepes because I prefer crepes over pancakes.

Their crepe menu is build-your-own where you choose your batter (sweet, savoury, gluten-free), toppings, drizzle and up to 5 fillings from a wide variety of vegetable, protein, fruit, egg, cheese and sweet options.

One thing to note about their sweet crepe is the texture is more on the crispy than the moist chewy. I highly recommend the crepe I built which I dub the Travelling Foodie Crepe. Let me know what you think of it!

The Canyons Zip Line & Canopy Tours

After breakfast, take the Taste of History Tour at The Canyons Zip Line & Canopy Tours, one of Ocala’s unique things to do.

Did you know? It’s rare to find canyons in Florida because the state is pretty flat. But here, you’ll find rocky cliffs and caves, and blue lakes surrounded by tall trees.

This 1.5-hour tour gets you on the “Mine-N-Wine” wagon to explore the The Canyons’ 100-acre park while learning about the park’s history, zip line and nature facts, and enjoying a tasting of local wines.

During the tour, you’ll get to choose between tasting wines from Island Grove or chocolates from Peterbrooke Chocolatiers.

For the wine tasting, I got to sample four different wines: Blueberry Moscato, Kinda Dry Blueberry, Sorta Sweet Blueberry and the Sunshine State Berry Sangria. I love the use of blueberries since it is so popular in Marion County.

I’ve had blueberry wines in Ontario before and enjoyed it a lot. It was no different this time. I loved the Sunshine State Berry Sangria the most, and the Blueberry Moscato second. You have to try them!

The Canyons used to be a limestone quarry back in 1915 so you’ll see remnants of its history during the tour.

We also visited two caves. With how much is unexplored in The Canyons, the staff still uncovers places by spelunking.

One cave is unofficially called “Steven Tyler’s Mouth”. You can probably see why below.

Being the Horse Capital of the World, you can’t not see horses. You’ll get to visit a stable as part of the tour where you can pet some horses. Similarly, The Canyons offers horseback riding tours as well.

With Zip Line in its name, you won’t miss seeing zip lines. In fact, The Canyons Zip Line has the fastest, the highest, and the longest zip lines in Florida!

You’ll be able to see all this during the tour. Similarly, you can do a zip line tour for that adrenaline rush along The Canyons.

Sayulita Taqueria

For lunch, head back to Ocala’s Historic Downtown Square for Sayulita Taqueria (or “Say Taco”), a new Mexican restaurant that opened in September 2018.

Did you know? The restaurant name comes from a small surfing village, Sayulita, in Mexico.

Be prepared to wait as this place quickly became a local favourite. In fact, one local told me she ate here at least twice a week.

Sayulita Taqueria has a dining room, a bar at the back, and a nice patio outside with a trailer, which is the best area to take photos.

A staple to order in Mexican restaurants is chips, and it’s usually tough to decide which dip to get. Sayulita Taqueria has got you covered with their Tres Amigos which comes with all three dips!

As a taqueria, you definitely have to order the tacos here which come with your choice of flour or homemade corn tortilla. They even have a taco inside a bag of Doritos!

I enjoyed the taco selection which is less traditional yet still delicious. The Avocado Taco was a delicious bite with crispy avocado and rich crema.

The Cowboy Taco was a meaty goodness of marinated steak and apple smoked bacon. Be sure to squeeze some lime further enhance the taste!

The Mahi Mahi Taco had a fresh tasting crispy mahi that goes well with the chili-lime spice. I recommend removing some of the pickled cabbage to get more out of the mahi.

Other than tacos, they also offer salads + bowls, quesadillas and Mexican desserts.

Tuscawilla Art Park

After lunch, take a stroll along Tuscawilla Art Park, a 102-year-old park that has become residence to a variety of artwork and sculpture. The City of Ocala promotes cultural arts by utilizing public spaces as exhibit spaces to artists.

The most iconic sculpture in the park is that of headless Marie and Jean sitting on a bench.

The original version of the sculpture wasn’t headless but vandals struck and took off the head. Instead of hiding the sculpture from the public, it’s there to remind people to take care of public art for all to enjoy.

Appleton Museum of Art

Continue honing your artistic side by heading to Appleton Museum of Art (AMA), a 81,610 sq-ft museum that opened in 1987 as a gift from Arthur Appleton to Ocala.

Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 2013, the Appleton Museum houses about 18,000 objects in permanent collections including American, Asian, African, Contemporary, European and pre-Columbian art and artifacts.

Aside from permanent collections, the museum also hosts a series of travelling exhibits curated by Patricia Tomlinson, Appleton Museum’s Curator of Exhibitions.

During my visit, the current exhibit was Familiar Beauty: Drawings by Vicki Jones. Vicki Jones is a local Central Florida artist specializing in graphite pencil drawings.

La Cuisine French Restaurant

End your trip by having a meal at another one of Ocala’s best restaurants, La Cuisine, in historic downtown, opened by husband-and-wife team Patrice and Elodie Perron.

Did you know? Executive Chef Patrice was born and raised in Lyon where he worked under the direct tutelage of Chef Josef Viola at Daniel & Denise.

La Cuisine has been Florida Trend’s Golden Spoon winner for 9 years to date, from 2011-2019. It’s clear why, once you dine here – authentic French food made perfectly in-house with traditional techniques, fresh produce and ingredients.

Let’s start with this seared foie gras which was mouth-wateringly good. I love when restaurants place some sort of carb under the foie gras to soak up the fatty goodness.

A signature dish at La Cuisine is the Grouper Meuniere, with its fresh tasting grouper with a soft crispy bite. The simple lemon butter sauce helped highlight the grouper even further.

The rack of lamb was perfectly cooked so it’s juicy and tears of the bone.

It was so good as-is with the herb and dijon mustard crust that I honestly didn’t use much of the demi glace sauce for it. What I did instead what use the sauce for the white truffle mashed potato that came with it.

Ocala Is the Gorgeous, Adventure-Filled Florida Town You've Never Heard Of

Crystal-clear natural springs, the rolling hills of horse country, and a charming historic downtown help this central Florida city shine.

When Southerners close their eyes and imagine paradise, it often looks a little (OK, a lot) like a Florida beach . Sugar-white sand, sparkling turquoise waters, sea oats swaying in the wind, and there you have it: picture-perfect Florida. One of the downsides to our obsession with Florida's coastline is that it can blind us to interior destinations that are just as worthy of a visit as their seaside counterparts.

Case in point: Ocala, Florida. This central Florida town located between Gainesville and Orlando is blessed with gorgeous vistas at every turn. Dubbed the Horse Capital of the World because of its many active horse farms and significant participation in the horse industry, Ocala is a place of rolling green pastureland and scenic views. And just because it's not on the coast doesn't mean water is in short supply. Ocala is home to several impressive natural springs that first put the town on the map as a tourist destination decades ago.

Here are the best things to do in Ocala, Florida, on your next visit to this hidden gem of a town.

Swim in a Natural Spring

For some, a Florida vacation isn't a Florida vacation without water. Ocala trades salty surf for crystal-clear freshwater pools thanks to the area's many natural springs. Take the whole family for a dip at the Juniper Springs Recreation Area , a massive complex of natural swimming pools and springs of all sizes—from the tiny and bubbling to the large and gushing. Relax in the 72-degree water under a dense canopy of palm and oak trees. SCUBA certified divers can find a different kind of adventure at Paradise Springs , a privately owned cavern, where divers can explore prehistoric fossils on ancient limestone walls under the water. Other springs to check out include nearby Rainbow Springs, Silver Glen Springs, Salt Springs, and Silver Springs (no swimming allowed in this one, but still worth a visit).

Hike in the Ocala National Forest

On the edge of town you'll find the 387,000-acre Ocala National Forest , which is the second largest national forest in Florida. Visitors can explore the vast coniferous and sand pine scrub forestland via trails that connect more than 600 swamps, lakes, rivers, and streams. Other activities inside the forest range from canoeing, boating, and fishing to snorkeling, diving, and swimming.

Tour the Appleton Museum of Art

If Ocala's natural beauty inspires the art lover in you, head to the Appleton Museum of Art , an 81,000-square-foot classic and contemporary art museum that's part of the College of Central Florida's Appleton Cultural Center complex. The museum is home to a collection of 24,000 objects displayed in galleries highlighting everything from Florida artists and equine art to Pre-Columbian artifacts and maritime collections. Be sure to check out the museum's outdoor sculpture walk and garden before leaving.

Visit the World Equestrian Center

You can't visit the Horse Capital of the World without spending some time with the majestic mares and stallions. The best places to do so is the largest equestrian complex in the country, the World Equestrian Center . The massive complex features world-class indoor and outdoor arenas, as well as a luxury hotel , state-of-the-art amenities, stores, restaurants, and more. Most equine events at the center are free, so all you have to do is check the online calendar for an event you're interested in and show up.

Go Horseback Riding

When you're ready to get in on the action, book a horseback riding tour with Cactus Jack's Trail Rides or Canyons Zip Line & Adventure Park . A 1-2-hour guided tour with Cactus Jack's takes you through the Cross Florida Greenway State Park on the back of a gorgeous well-cared-for horse. Along thew way, you'll see oak hammocks, pine forests, and green fields. The outfitter has Arabians and Thoroughbreds, as well as Tennessee Walkers and Argentina Polo horses.

Explore the Historic Downtown

After you've had your fill of outdoor adventure, head to Downtown Ocala for farm-to-table dining, craft beer, and boutique shopping in one walkable, easy-to-explore historic neighborhood. Local businesses, eateries, and stores emanate for a few square blocks around Town Square, a paved octagon surrounded by trees and grass that also features a historic gazebo. The coldest month, on the other hand, is January, when it can get as cold as 46.4 °F, with an average temperature of 57.2 °F. You’re likely to see more rain in July, when precipitation is around 8.3″. In contrast, November is usually the driest month of the year in Ocala, with an average rainfall of 1.6″.

How to Get to Ocala

Although Ocala doesn’t have its own airport, you can fly to Daytona Beach (DAB), which is located 65 miles from Ocala. Tampa Airport is the most popular, with regular flights from Air France, JetBlue, Delta and other airlines departing from the United States. The shortest domestic flight to Ocala departs from San Antonio and takes around 2h 40m.

Brightline is the most popular train carrier serving Ocala, followed by Amtrak. The train journey from Ocala to Tampa takes 1h 49m and costs around $12 for a one-way ticket. When coming by train from Jacksonville, expect to pay about $22 for a 2h 39m trip. The train station in Ocala is called Ocala, and is located 0.5 miles from the city center.

Another option to get to Ocala is to pick up a car rental from Orlando, which is about 64 miles from Ocala. You’ll find branches of Fox and Routes Car & Truck Rentals, among others, in Orlando.

Several bus lines operate bus routes to Ocala, including Jet Set Express, RedCoach and Megabus. From Sky Lake, the bus ride to Ocala takes 70 miles and will cost you around $17. 15 Best Things to Do in Ocala (FL)

Located in northern Florida’s Marion County, the city of Ocala was incorporated in 1869 and currently ranks as the state’s 54th most populous city, with a population of just more than 63,000 residents.

I adore the scenery in this part of the state, known as ‘horse country’ and full of grand live oaks draped with Spanish moss.

The city lies south of Gainesville along Interstate 75 and is almost equidistant to the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts, making many of the state’s most popular attractions easily accessible for those who don’t mind spending some time in the car.

The area is covered with undeveloped forests and natural beauty so is a hotspot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts like me.

So check out my 15 favorite things to do in and around Ocala, Florida.

1. Appleton Museum of Art

Set on the College of Central Florida’s Ocala Campus, the Appleton Museum of Art is one of the region’s premier fine art destinations, and one of those slightly off the beaten path community resources that shouldn’t be passed up, especially by artsy travelers.

Featuring a vast collection of traditional and contemporary art from all over the world, the museum is open year-round and offers a variety of instructional and educational classes, workshops, and lectures throughout the year.

What I love about the museum is its sense of place. As well as collections from Europe to Asia there’s a lot of art from right here in Central Florida, and I got an idea of how culture has progressed in this part of the world.

College campuses are great places to explore for value-minded travelers, so check the College of Central Florida’s website to see what’ll be going on when you’ll be in the area.

2. Ocala National Forest

Ocala National Forest is one of the state’s most popular natural destinations and offers visitors a vast array of year-round activity options, including kayaking, camping, fishing, and wildlife photography and viewing.

Though it can get hot in the summer and mildly cold in the winter, the weather is almost always conducive to being outside.

Something special to me is the variety of cool water-fed springs like Alexander, Salt, and Silver Glen Springs, all of which are favorite swimming attractions during the hot and humid summer months.

Keep in mind that some activities like fishing require licenses, so get one before you go if you plan to wet a line.

3. Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing and International Drag Racing Hall of Fame

Known as ‘Big Daddy’ to his loyal fans, Don Garlits is often referred to as the ‘Father of Drag Racing,’ and had an unrivaled career that spanned four decades.

During that time, he compiled an enviable collection of titles and championships that totaled nearly 150; as such, he is in a class all by himself.

The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing and International Drag Racing Hall of Fame have been open since the mid-’70s. Their collections include hundreds of vehicles, exhibits, and historical items spread over two buildings.

I was thrilled to see the evolution of Garlits’ innovative Swap Rat dragster over the years, beginning with Swamp Rat I, built in his home garage in 1957.

Located on SW 16th Avenue in Ocala, most guests end up spending two hours or more to take it all in. Pets are welcome on a leash, so I visited with my pup.

4. Withlacoochee State Forest

Though it’s not quite as well-known as some of Florida’s other state and national forests, Withlacoochee State Forest happens to be the Sunshine State’s third largest state forest.

This property includes portions dedicated to wildlife and environmental preservation, timber production, and outdoor recreation.

There are nearly 50 miles of trails, and many of the forest’s paths are paved, making them convenient ways to explore the natural world, even for those traveling with little ones.

If you don’t mind making the trip, I recommend exploring the caves in the southwestern corner of the park. I spent a whole day looking around Danger Cave. Dames Cave, and Sick Bat Cave.

Due to its size, my advice is to familiarize yourself with the land’s layout before heading out; this can be done online or at the visitor’s center.

5. Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center

Featuring admission that’s less expensive than a soda and bag of chips, the Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center is one of those rare attractions that engages and entertains visitors while educating them too.

The museum and center’s exhibits touch on animals, the natural world, and the area’s rich Native American cultures, namely the Seminole Indians.

I have to admit, I did lose it when I saw the prehistoric displays, especially the intact mastodon skeleton, which is a real showpiece for the museum.

The facility is located on NE 58th Avenue in Ocala, and during the week it’s closed to the public, as this time is reserved for local school children.

Public access is granted on the weekends and costs just a few bucks; children under six get in free.

6. Canyons Zip Line and Canopy Tours

Zip lining has become a popular activity in recent years, and for those who don’t let towering heights fluster them, there’s really no better way to get a bird’ s-eye-view of the landscape than by dangling from a thin cable hundreds of feet in the air.

Canyons Zip Line and Canopy Tours feature a variety of lines of varying heights. For those who’ve never tried this exhilarating form of recreation, fear not; every participant gets an orientation and all the safety gear they’ll need before heading out.

I took the Big Cliff Canyon tour, which had nine zip lines, the longest of which was an exciting 1,100-foot ride across Lost Spring Lake.

If you’d rather try something different, rappelling, kayaking and horseback excursions are offered too.

7. Hoggetowne Medieval Faire

Featuring a variety of costumed wenches, knights, and royalty, the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire has been going strong for more than three decades and takes place in late January and early February every year.

The Faire is full of old-world activities like jousting, falconry, and munching on giant turkey legs. The knife throwers, jugglers, and dancers are big hits too, especially with the little ones.

For me, the heart of the event is the lively marketplace, with artisans selling quality jewelry, hand-blown glassware, stone and wood carving, leather crafts, and much more.

There are plenty of amusement park-style rides and games that are fun and appropriate for visitors of all ages. The cost of admission is relatively inexpensive, so mark it on your calendar and get ready to take a trip into the past.

8. Gypsy Gold Horse Farm

Located on SW 8th Avenue in Ocala, Gypsy Gold Horse Farm traces its roots back to the mid-’90s, when a trip to England convinced a local couple that their future lay in a Florida horse farm.

They ended up importing more than a dozen horses from England to the States. Since then, the farm’s scope has expanded; it is now home to an officially recognized breed of horses called Gypsy Vanner.

Though the animals are on the pricey side, the good news is that you don’t need to actually buy one to appreciate them. The farm offers a variety of tour and activity options for horse and farm lovers, so check out their website for details.

I was pressed for time, so went on the less detailed Walking Tour, admiring those mares, foals and stallions while strolling in the shade of the live oaks.

9. Ocala Civic Theatre

The Ocala Civic Theatre is one of those community resource gems that’s often overlooked by all but the savviest, most value-minded travelers.

Featuring a variety of year-round productions that include musicals, drama, and live music, the theater generally offers 12 productions per year; they host many visiting productions as well.

I caught a performance of Outside Mullingar during my time in Ocala, and was surprised by how moving I found it.

Located on East Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala, in addition to its performing arts, the center offers educational and instructional courses and programs.

Tickets to individual shows are available online, as are season passes, which are the best value for those who’ll be in the area for a while.

10. Ocala Downtown Market

I have a real soft spot for farmers’ markets, and there’s a great one in Ocala on Saturdays 9am to 2pm. Located a few blocks from Ocala Downtown Square, the Downtown Market is a cocktail of commerce, culture, and cuisine, not to mention community.

Under a great big pavilion you’ve got a wealth of Florida-grown fresh produce, accompanied by craftspeople, artisans, and a whole selection of food trucks to tempt you.

The pavilion has giant overhead fans to keep the heat down in summer, as well as restrooms, a playground, and a permanent on-site beverage vendor, Buzz & Grind, for coffee, wine and craft beer.

11. Sholom Park

I can’t get enough of this privately owned botanical garden on Ocala’s southwest side. Founded in 2004, Sholom Park is home to more than 100 species of plants and trees, and 100+ species of fauna.

With an appropriate name that means ‘peace’ in Hebrew, the 44-acre park is fully accessible, and has a rose garden, an olive tree promenade, a prairie area, two miles of trails, and a labyrinth.

My ideal spot to take a break with a book is the pond, with a fountain and a lot of life, from koi to turtles.

12. Farm Tours of Ocala

If you want a deeper insight into Ocala’s rich horse-breeding culture then there’s a number of other working farms around the town that are happy to welcome visitors.

For my money, the best way to see a few in one afternoon is on the Horse Capital of the World Tour, via Farm Tours of Ocala.

Your time will be divided between a scenic drive through the local wooded scenery, picking up interesting details along the way, and compelling visits to farms that have bred champion horses.

The experience changes by the season, but there’s always something special in store, whether you’re treating a thoroughbred to a carrot, meeting foals, or watching competition horses at full speed.

13. The Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention

Located on South Main Street in nearby Gainesville, The Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention is all about inspiring and shaping the next generation of inventors, entrepreneurs, and visionaries.

Although it’s only been open a few years, the museum has earned a reputation for its unique and stimulating exhibits and programs.

One that caught my eye is the Junior Inventor Night, rolling together science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM), by following in the footsteps of history’s great innovators.

For parents with budding business moguls and inventors at home, there’s no better place to foster relevant learning than the Cade Museum.

14. Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park

Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park is one of northern Florida’s most unique natural attractions. Its most popular element is a giant sinkhole that plunges more than 100 feet into the earth.

The sink is a treasure trove of fossils, helping researchers document Florida’s natural history. And, in a land of sandy pine forest, it was an amazing experience to suddenly find myself in the rainforest microhabitat that fills this landform.

The park entrance is located just off Millhopper Road, and the visitor’s center is a great place to stop before heading out on your own.

There’s a boardwalk that spans the hole’s perimeter, and ranger-led tours are available for inquisitive visitors every Saturday.

15. Haile Homestead

Though cotton is still a big agricultural product in Florida, back in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was one of the state’s most significant economic drivers.

Some schedules continue west on I-10 towards Houston from Lake City via Tallahassee, Panama City, Pensacola, Ft Walton Beach, Mobile, Baton Rouge, etc. Passengers transfer in Lake City or Tallahassee to reach Jacksonville or another destination north and in Miami to continue south to the Florida Keys.

Visit during January and March if you want milder temps and smaller crowds. And if you want to beat those massive lines at Disney World, consider visiting over Thanksgiving break or in March when schools let out for Spring Break.

No matter what time of year it is, plan on long lines at theme parks like Disney World (especially at Halloween!) since they draw millions of visitors each year.

Downtown Ocala has several great restaurant choices that are worth considering. Start with Taqueria El Mero Taco on Northwest 6th Street –it offers authentic Mexican food that won’t leave you feeling heavy and stuffed (plus, they have delicious margaritas).

Hosts typically offer lodging in their primary residences, which means you’ll get all of the personal touches with couch-surfing. A word of caution: some properties are better than others when it comes to location; request pictures from potential hosts before booking, so you know what you’re getting into.

Getting around town

The easiest way to get around Ocala is by car. If you’re travelling from outside Florida, it can be less expensive and more convenient to fly to one of Orlando’s airports (MCO, ORL) and rent a car for a few days than it would be to take a shuttle.

These apps allow riders to see how far away their driver is, how long they expect it will take them to arrive, and what type of vehicle they’ll be riding in. Both Uber and Lyft offer discounts for first-time users, so now might be a good time if you haven’t tried either service yet!
