As you walk through the gorge, you’ll cross over several wooden suspension bridges that offer sweeping views over the Tolminka and Zadlascica Rivers. At the end of the trail is the infamous Bear’s Head viewpoint, which is a small boulder that has become wedged between two of the rocky cliffs.

What’s most unique about the Pericnik Waterfalls is that you can walk behind them. There’s a small trail that leads behind the gushing water and offers pristine views of the entire valley in front of it. If you’re not afraid of getting a little wet, this trek is a must-see during your visit to the falls.

9. Lake Bohinj

Nestled at the foot of the Bohinj Valley in the Julian Alps sits Lake Bohinj. Although many people come to relax and admire the picturesque scenery, Lake Bohinj is really an outdoor lover’s paradise. Take a journey into the dark underworld of the Postojna Cave system. Here, 15-miles of tunnels, stalagmites, and stalactites were carved over millions of years by the Pivka River. Although it’s now open to tours and visitors, the cave can also be used for large events and concerts.

However, the most unique feature is the underground railway. This 150-year old train takes you through the different rooms, halls, and corridors of the mysterious Postojna Cave. On the tour, you’ll get to see the towering Skyscraper, a 20-foot-tall stalagmite.

Located on the Adriatic coast on a narrow peninsula, this charming village is marked by red Gothic houses and imposing city walls. There's a reason Lake Bled is one of Slovenia's most popular sites. With its emerald waters, church-dotted islet, views of the Julien Alps, and Disney-like castle on a hill, you won't be short of picture-perfect views.

Pokljuka Plateau

Located within Triglav National Park at an elevation of around 3,600-4,600 feet, Pokljuka is a plateau of forests and idyllic mountain pastures, like Uskovnica, Lipanca, and Zajamniki (pictured). It is known for its winter sports facilities, and is a popular starting point for people hiking the Julian Alps.

Slovenia's capital city is as romantic and charming as they come—and clean, having been named the “Green Capital of Europe 2016” by the European Commission. Stroll through the pedestrian-only Old Town, sip coffee by the leafy banks of the Ljubljanica River, or take in the baroque architecture and hilltop sixteenth-century Ljubljana Castle.

Škocjan Caves

This UNESCO World Heritage site is found in the Karst region, a limestone plateau stretching from southwest Slovenia to Italy. The system of caves consists of 3.8 miles of underground passages, waterfalls , and rapids, and the enormous Martel Chamber—one of the largest underground chambers in the world. A village located close to the border of Italy, Lipica is known for one thing in particular: its horses. The town is home to the world-renowned Lipica Stud Farm, an establishment that first bred Lipizzan horses back in the 16th century. Visits to the farm include trail riding, carriage rides, museum tours, and stud performances.

Predjama Castle

The Gothic-style Predjama Castle is easily one of the world's most dramatic castles , built directly into the side of a 404-foot cliff that hides a network of cave passages. Tours of the castle are available year-round, although hibernating bats in the caves restrict underground tours to the months of May-September.

Situated on a picturesque peninsula on the Adriatic coastline, Piran is one of Slovenia's most beautiful cities . Its pedestrian-only Old Town is reminiscent of Venice in miniature, with Gothic architecture, alfresco wine bars, narrow alleyways, and glowing sunsets .

Vintgar Gorge

Sitting just over two miles north of Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge is a wild natural monument located in the heart of the Julian Alps (it's part of Triglav National Park). More than 5,000 feet of wooden walkways wind through the gorge, taking you over rapids, pools, and rivers before reaching the spectacular Šum Waterfall.

Flowing for 86 miles through the Julian Alps in western Slovenia and Italy, Soča is one seriously beautiful river—startlingly clear and impossibly emerald. Adventurers flock to its waters for whitewater rafting, kayaking, and canyoning.

Slovenia's second-largest city is provincial and charming, with a medieval Old Town, pedestrian-only central streets, and a skyline defined by orange roofs and rolling hills. The town is also the site of a glorious landmark: "the oldest vine in the world." Stara Trta (literally "Old Vine") is more than 400 years old, and is a symbol of the rich wine culture in Maribor.

Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora is one of Slovenia's best resort towns (especially during the winter months), equipped with many hotels, restaurants, and ski slopes. The area is surrounded by stunning lakes and some of the highest peaks in the Julian Alps.

Škofja Loka

Škofja Loka is one of the oldest towns in Slovenia, and is located a bit off the beaten tourist path (about 18 miles west of Ljubljana and 16 miles south of Bled). It is well worth the drive, especially since the town is one of the most fairy tale-esque places in the country—think hilly countrysides, buildings with Baroque frescoes and stone towers, and a castle that becomes illuminated at night.

Predjama castle.

Predjama Castle is a magnificent Renaissance castle. What makes this castle unique is the fact that it is built inside a cave. The castle used to be home to Erazem Lueger, a knight, who was known as the local Robin Hood. Available audio tours reveal the exciting life of Lueger and the history of the Predjama Castle. Tours of a secret tunnel, which served as a supply route when the castle was under siege, are also available when scheduled in advance.

Postojna Cave

The Slovenian underground hides thousands of caves . Among those, twenty-two are open to the public, and Postojna Cave is the most visited. A 90-minute guided tour takes visitors through caverns, halls, and passages that were carved by the Pivka River. Inside the cave, there are beautiful karst formations, some of which are millions of years old. Several times a year concert events are set inside the cave, and as a part of Postojna Cave’s Christmas traditions, a nativity scene with live actors is set in December.

Lake Bled is one of the most visited attractions in Slovenia. The beautiful views of the lake and the small island it surrounds brings thousands of visitors every year. The best way to reach the island is taking pletna , a traditional gondola in the Bled area. Once on the island, visitors must walk up ninety-nine steps to reach the island’s church. It is considered good luck to ring the church’s bell when visiting the island.

Franja Partisan Hospital

Franja Hospital served as Partisan Hospital during World War II. Located in the Pasica gorge, it was hidden from the enemy and saved the lives of many men and women. After the war, Franja became a museum and was open to visitors until a devastating flood in 2007. Luckily, the hospital was reconstructed, and the new hospital is almost an exact replica of the old hospital. Now, the fourteen cabins that form Franja Partisan Hospital are once again open to visitors.

Lipica Stud Farm

Lipica Stud Farm has been breeding Lipizzaner horses since the sixteenth century. Once used by royals for their private stables, the farm is now open to visitors and allows them to admire this beautiful breed of horse. When visiting the Lipica Stud Farm, guests can stroll through the barns and join one of the farm’s guided tours. Three times a week the Classical Riding School performs, and guests can see the Lipizzaner horses in action.

Triglav National Park

The Triglav National Park , named after the country’s tallest mountain, is the only National Park in Slovenia. With beautiful views of the mountains, hills, lakes, rivers, and pastures, this park is a nature lover’s paradise. Aside from hiking, Triglav National Park offers great activities such as kayaking, rafting, skydiving, and parasailing.

Mercury Mine Idrija

When still operating, Mercury Mine in Idrija was the second largest mercury mine in the world. Now, it is an excellent museum that takes visitors underground and introduces them to the life of Slovenian miners. The entrance to the museum is through Anthony’s Main Road, which was built in the sixteenth century and is one of the oldest mine shaft entrances in Europe. The historical importance of the Mercury Mine in Idrija is the reason that the mine was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012.

Salt Fields in Sečovlje Salina Nature Park

The Salt pans in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park are one of the few places in the world where sea salt is still produced by using a centuries-old method. When walking on the park trails, visitors can observe salt being harvested manually by local workers. For those who wish to pamper themselves, Lepa Vida Thalasso Spa offers massages and baths where the healing powers of the sea salt are used.

Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle offers the most beautiful views of Ljubljana. This sixteenth-century castle is easily accessible by foot or by taking a tram. The Oldest Vine in the World

In the Lent area of Maribor , Slovenia’s second-largest city grows the oldest grape-producing vine in the world. Records show that the vine has been growing on the façade of an old house since the seventeenth century. Church of the Holy Trinity

The Romanesque-style Church of the Holy Trinity is located in a small village, Hrastovlje. It is most known for its seven-meter long fresco, The Dance of Death (Danse Mac) . Until 1949, when discovered by Jože Pohlen, this magnificent piece of art was hidden under a thick layer of plaster. The Dance of Death portrays eleven skeletons leading eleven people (of different social status) to their grave, with the twelfth skeleton holding the coffin open for them. This art piece was created to remind people that we are all equal in God’s eyes.

Kobarid Museum

The Kobarid Museum was founded with the purpose of preserving, presenting, and researching the history of World War I in Slovenia. Most of the museum is dedicated to the Soča Front, the most important front on the Slovenian territory in the Great War. The rooms of the museum present visitors with photos documenting the horrors of the front, military charts, diaries and maps, and two large relief displays showing the front lines. Visitors can explore the museum on their own, or they can partake in one of the guided tours.

Planica Nordic Center

Planica is home to the biggest ski jumping hill in the world. For over twenty years it has hosted one of the most important ski jumping competitions in the world. In 2015 Planica received a much-needed update, and the new Planica Nordic Center was built. Aside from the ski jumps the center also features an athletics stadium, a zipline, a wind tunnel, cycling and walking paths, and a visitor’s center. Planica zipline has the steepest descent in the world, which creates the sensations that ski jumping champions feel when flying through the air.

Stična Abbey

Stična Abbey, built in 1136, is home to the oldest monastery in Slovenia. This monastery houses the Slovenian Museum of Religion, which presents the Stična Monastery’s history and the history of the Roman Catholic religion in Slovenia. The monks at Stična Abbey are excellent tea-makers, and because of this, the monastery houses a little tearoom, where visitors can try and buy tea.

Solkan Bridge

The Solkan Bridge, located near Nova Gorica, is a great place to view the turquoise Soča River and the beautiful Soča Valley. The bridge also holds the world record for the longest train bridge built solely out of stone. For the truly adventurous, bungee jumping off the bridge is the most unique way to admire the beauty of the Soča Valley.

15 Best Places to Visit in Slovenia

Slovenia, perhaps rather unfairly, may not be everyone’s first pick when jetting off to an exciting new holiday destination. Instead, it is quietly but steadily becoming an up-and-coming corner of the world to visit, and first time travellers here won’t leave disappointed.

Revel in the lush valleys and trails that that wind through the Alps, enjoy the folk culture, or learn all about the local fine wine.

Join us as we take you on a tour through this stunning and hauntingly beautiful country and show you the 15 best places to visit in Slovenia .

1. Ljubljana

You might get a feeling that Llubljana is a special place when you wander around this dainty city and notice the myriad dragon statues that dot the streets. According to legend, Jason and the Argonauts slayed a similar monster in Llubljana in the days of old and, aside from the dragons, the city is packed full of gorgeous architecture that dates from the Baroque period.

As well as sculptures and art work, the city is also known for its little squares that line the part of the city called Old Town.

Watching over the city is Ljubljana Castle that is served by a funicular in case you don’t fancy the trek up, and you can also climb the clock tower and soak in the spectacular views over the city.

People will tell you that Slovenia looks like something out of a fairy tale, all brooding castles and verdant forests, and the picturesque town of Bled is no exception. The town features a glassy lake that is perfect for boating trips to the small island in the centre that has its own church, or if you fancy something more active you can choose to go kayaking or canoeing.

Cycling and hiking around the lake are also common pastimes as are visits to the Gothic Church that sits perched on a hill overlooking the town.

There are also famous skiing areas located just outside of Bled that can be accessed via chairlift that will take you to the summit of Straža Ski Slope and you can either choose to ski or even use a toboggan to get to the bottom.

3. Škocjan Caves

Visit the natural wonder of the Škocjan Caves and know that you are also in a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as the highest hall of caves in the whole of Europe.

The caves are located in a giant canyon that is positioned underground and you can cross from one side to the other via a bridge that allows you to understand the scale of this cave system.

Visitors to the caves can explore the beautiful columns of stalactites and stalagmites, and you won’t be alone when you visit as there are plenty of creatures that lurk in the darkness including more than fifteen species of bats!

Slovenia is not well known as a skiing destination although it really should be as it even snows in the summer months at higher altitudes.

Rising above the impossibly pretty Bohinj Lake you will find Vogel, where you can enjoy either downhill or cross country skiing trails, and there are different sections depending on your ability and fitness levels.

One of the best things about Slovenia is the fact that those who enjoy winter sports can indulge their passion from December through to May when crisp, powdery snow is pretty much guaranteed in the country.

If you feel like you might be in need of some rest and relaxation, or simply fancy a dip in a soothing warm bath, then the thermal waters of the town of Laško are not to be missed.

The waters are said to have healing and rejuvenating properties and locals and visitors alike have flocked to the area to bathe for centuries.

6. Rogatec Open-Air Museum

If you want a slightly different museum experience then head outside and visit Rogatec Open-Air Museum that is based around a farm.

The emphasis of the museum is to teach visitors about the local customs and folk traditions of Slovenia and there are arts and crafts activities and workshops that allow you to try your hand at bread baking, basket weaving, or even blacksmithing.

There is also a nearby manor that dates from the Renaissance period that visitors can tour to learn all about Slovenian heritage and traditions from the 18th Century onwards.

7. Postojna Cave

Located just outside the town of Postojna is the Postojna Cave, a karst cave that takes the form of haunting bubbles and frothing rocks thanks to the natural limestone dissolved by the waters of the Pivka River from which the karst topography is created.

The systems of caves are the second longest in Slovenia and highlights include a stalagmite named Brilliant which has also become the symbol of the cave.

Other things not to miss are the underground railway the transports visitors deep into the bowels of the cave, the Concert Hall (actually a large cave known for its spectacular acoustics), and the Spaghetti Hall, so called because of the shape of the tunnels within.

8. Logarska Dolina

Logarska Dolina is a valley in the Alps that lends itself to gentle rambles through forests that have stood for centuries. The valley actually dates from the Ice Age and sits upon the site of a glacier than created the basin that makes the area resemble a trough.

For the brave of heart this area is often used as the base camp for those wishing to scale the mighty peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The valley falls into distinct areas, namely the lower, central, and upper parts, and in the lower and central areas visitors will find gorgeous meadows through which to meander.

In the upper part of the valley the forests begin in earnest, and the entire area has now become a regional park that ensures that visitors can marvel at the local plant and animal life in a pristine environment of almost untouched natural beauty.

9. Predjama Castle

For a truly awe inspiring experience, head to Predjama Castle. Firstly, this is a feat of engineering like no other as the castle is built in the mouth of a cave atop a cliff that rises to over 120 metres.

As if this wasn’t enough, the castle is said to be over 700 years old and was the former home of a Slovenian famous figure named Erazem Lueger, a knight and noble baron turned robber who famously stole from the elite and gave to the poor, also challenging the establishment in Slovenia as a kind of Robin Hood-like figure.

Reenactments are often displayed at the castle including medieval jousting held in July.

10. Triglav National Park

Taking its name from Slovenia’s highest peak, Triglav, this is the only national park in the country and is found in the north-western region of the Julian Alps.

The park is protected from extensive building work in order to preserve the natural beauty of the area, and the glacial Triglav Lakes as well as Mount Triglav are the bid draws here for visitors.

11. Soca Valley

Soca River that runs through the valley of the same name has to be seen to be believed, as it is actually a stunning shade of brilliant turquoise. The valley is spectacular in its own right and features a wide range of local flora and fauna for visitors to explore, but if you want to do something more adventurous then there are a plethora of outdoor activities available in this natural playground.

Rafting on the river is popular and a great way to take in the views as you sail by on the water or you can take to the skies with other extreme pursuits like paragliding.

If you want something a little calmer, then you can ride horses along mountain trails, or hike in the surrounding areas and stop at one of the many picturesque spots in the valley for a picnic. Cycling and mountain biking are also becoming more and more popular in Slovenia is you fancy tackling the mountain terrain.

12. Maribor

Having won the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture 2012, come to Maribor , Slovenia’s second largest city, to learn all about the local culture and in particular the wine. The city is famed for having some of the oldest vines in the world and for the superb wine that they create, and there are vineyards that stretch from the town of Maribor into the Pohorje forests. As you would expect there is also a Festival of Wine held annually, and Maribor is perfect for wine lovers looking to see how wine is made from vine to table.

13. Vršic Pass

Rising to over 1,500 meters, the Vršic Pass is famed as the highest mountain pass in the Julian Alps in Slovenia and has a road that stretches all the way along the pass before dipping down to the Soca Valley named Russian Road that dates from the early twentieth century.

The pass is well known as an ideal place for climbers who want to tackle one of the peaks in the surrounding areas, some of which rise to over 7,000 feet, as well as with hikers looking for shorter excursions.

If you want to stay in the area then there are a range of charming mountain lodges to choose from that will allow you to soak in the local culture.

Slovenia lies on the Adriatic Sea, and the town of Piran is one coastal attraction that you don’t want to miss.

The town features Venetian architecture and has winding cobbled streets that allow you to explore on foot at a leisurely pace as you breathe in the salty air.

You can also visit St George’s Church that dominates the skyline of the diminutive town from its vantage point on a hill and, should you make it up there, you can enjoy uninterrupted views all the way to the sea.

15. Blejski Vintgar

Known as one of the most popular attractions in Slovenia with locals, the Vintgar Gorge sits outside of the city of Bled near the village of Podhom.

The gorge is neatly bisected by the Radovna River, and there are bridges, paths, and viewing galleries that run the length of the area so that visitors can take in the spectacular views in a number of ways and explore the gorge to its full potential.

30 Best things to do in Slovenia, according to travel bloggers

Ah, beautiful Slovenia! This is one of the most incredible countries in Europe.

It’s so small yet has it all. With all the best things to do in Slovenia, you surely won’t be bored during your visit.

In only one day during your Slovenia trip you can swim in the Adriatic Sea in the morning and hike in the Slovenian Alps in the afternoon, with the visit in the second largest cave in the world in between.

I can vouch it’s possible to have such a crazy Slovenia itinerary in one day as it happened to me too: in the morning I saw Alps, before noon I was walking around Ljubljana , the charming capital, in the afternoon I was at the seaside only to finish the day in Maribor – one of the main cities in Slovenia, located in the east part of the country!

But I wouldn’t recommend such a craziness, it’s better to visit Slovenia properly and enjoy the place and all the Slovenia attractions to the fullest!

Slovenia was the first country during my Balkan travels that I’ve visited back in 2002 (although I know it’s not so much Balkans anymore, more like Central Europe ). Since then it always had a special place in my heart.

That’s when I first saw how diverse and interesting it is, kind of like the mix of the Balkan soul with the Austrian neatness. Nature was also very generous for Slovenia, putting all of the wonders in such a tiny land, making the list of “Slovenia must see” really long.

So, here we go with some ideas of what to do in Slovenia!

Wander around Ljubljana

I personally think Ljubljana is one of the most charming capitals in Europe. As the whole country, it’s rather small and easy to walk around – that’s actually one of the best things to do in Ljubljana.

The old town is just the cutest with houses painted to warm colors.

The riverbank is leafy and perfect for lazy strolls or relaxing cup of coffee.

The castle towering the city offers spectacular views of the area, even as far as to Julian Alps mountains.

But for the best views of Ljubljana Old Town head to the cafe on the last floor of Neboticnik.

While the old town is all cute and charming Ljubljana has an edgy site too and that’s the best seen at Metelkova – a complex of old barracks turned into the cultural space. That’s the heart of alternative Ljubljana with numerous art galleries, bars, cultural institutions and lots of amazing street art around.

Admire Plecnik’s architecture of Ljubljana

“My favorite thing when traveling is to visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

While Ljubljana doesn’t have its own full UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a tentative site under the title “The Timeless, Humanistic Architecture of Joze Plecnik.” This site comprises the architecture of Plecnik, who transformed the architecture of Ljubljana after an earthquake knocked down much of the town’s main sites.

It’s thought that he had an influence on the city greater than Gaudi had on Barcelona, as nearly every major aspect of Ljubljana’s architecture is influenced by the work he did from the 1920’s to 1940’s.

While visiting Ljubljana, it’s impossible to overestimate how much of the dreamy, feminine landscape informs the visitor’s experience.

Ljubljana’s reputation as both a romantic and fantastical travel destination owes so much to Plecnik’s work.

During my time in the city, I adored walking through the city appreciating each individual building and how they form an ensemble.

Every visitor who enjoys a lazy afternoon people watching on the river, strolling its banks, or getting lost in the historic center owes Plecnik their gratitude.”

Falling for Lake Bled

Rashmi & Chalukya from GOBeyondBounds really enjoyed Lake Bled, and I definitely can see why as this is one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia!

“Lake Bled is among the most popular Slovenia attractions and one of the best places to see in Slovenia.

The stunning picture of the fairytale island church or the Church of the Assumption of Maria sits in the middle of the Lake Bled in a picturesque setting.

There are plenty of things to do in Bled .

Take a walk along the lake promenade enjoying the views.

You can go boating on the Lake Bled and visit the beautiful island church on the traditional Pletna boats.

You can visit the Bled Castle which sits on the cliff overlooking the Lake Bled.

The castle has several buildings, museums, cafe and a souvenir shop.

The Castle can be reached through a set of stairs along the lake promenade.

You can go hiking to the Ojstrica, viewpoint which offers a picture-perfect view of Lake Bled and the island church.”

Mel from TravelingMel.com is another fan of Bled but she has visited the town in the winter time. And found plenty of things to do then too!

“Any time is a good time to visit Lake Bled, but winter is especially magical.

Snow caps the mountains and the lake is frozen with its little church glistening on the island.

It’s like walking into a winter wonderland or a fairytale.

Winter in Lake Bled means outdoor recreation.

Some years the lake freezes and you can rent skates at the Park Restaurant and Cafe.

After sliding around on the ice, a hot cocoa and a slice of Bled’s famous cream cake warms you right up.

The castle is open all year and ripe for exploring – without the crowds—in winter.

Nearby, there are opportunities to cross-country ski, snowshoe, and alpine ski in Triglav National Park.”

When you’re in Bled don’t miss the famous cream cake there. It’s a calories bomb but every bite is so worth it!

While it was created in Hotel Park and that’s where you will eat the original one I’d recommend heading to Cafe Belvedere, a little bit further from the center of Bled.

The cafe is hidden in the forest above the lake, few steps away from the former Tito’s villa (that you can stay at as well – click here to see the details and current rates ) and offers amazing views of the area.

You’re literally in front of the island with the church. I can’t think of a better place in Bled to eat the cream cake or just about anything else.

The cafe itself is worth paying more attention too as well.

It was designed by Joze Plecnik and served as a waiting hall before the audience with King Alexander of Yugoslavia.

That’s also where Tito hosted his tea and cognac parties.

Discovering a little gem – Radovljica

Only 10 minutes away from Lake Bled you will find Radovljica – a little gem of Slovenia.

Not many know about this place, often bypassing it on the way to the mountains, but it’s worth to stop here for three reasons: beautiful center, Beekeping Museum and Gingerbread Museum.

I enjoyed the museums so much, especially the first one where I learned a lot about bees and honey.

Radovljica is also a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of Bled and enjoy Slovenia without the crowds.

Hiking Vintgar Gorge

If you’re in Bled be sure to hike Vintgar Gorge too, as Val & Nick from Wandering Wheatleys recommend:

“Vintgar Gorge is short but spectacular hike located just 3 miles northwest of the darling town of Bled.

Tourists and locals alike flock to this picturesque area to escape the bustling town.

At the start of the hike you’ll marvel at the massive limestone walls covered in moss that tower above you.

Further along the gorge narrows and narrow wooden walkways have been constructed to allow visitors to continue the trek while the powerful river rushes underneath your path.

Along the way you’ll pass several small waterfalls as well as an impressive stone railway bridge overhead that was constructed in 1906.

At the end of the hike you’ll come to a suspension bridge that crosses the 40′ high Šum Waterfall.

Be sure to descend the stairs behind the ticket office and cross to the platform at the base of the falls for the best viewpoint.

The hike is just 2 miles round trip and should take about 90 minutes.

You’ll need to pay an entrance fee of 5€ per person to enter the area.”

Skiing in Kranjska Gora

I visited Kranjska Gora only to attend ski flying competition in Planica but I just loved the place.

Nichola from Globalmouse Travels went skiing there and that’s what she says about it:

“Slovenia has to be one of the best places to ski in Europe. With friendly, kind instructors and really affordable skiing, it’s a wonderful place to get on to the slopes.

We skied in Kranjska Gora which was almost fairytale like in appearance and a great location for beginners and intermediates in particular to learn to ski.

There’s a picture perfect market in the centre and plenty of places to eat, including opportunities to try out some of the local dumplings and hearty Slovenian stews.

Kranjska Gora is also ideally placed for a day trip into Ljubljana or even Venice which breaks up time on the snow.

For somewhere that’s different but packed full of character and genuinely warm greetings Kranjska Gora is one of our favourite places to ski and also enjoy the beautiful Slovenia sights.”

Visiting Lake Jasna and Vršič Pass

“Lake Jasna, one of the most beautiful places to go in Slovenia, is nestled in the Triglav National Park in the northwest of the country.

The lakes crystal clear waters reflect the stunning Julian mountains through which the Vršič Pass ascends.

The lake is a perfect day trip from Lake Bled (it’s only a 40-minute drive) and is a popular swimming and picnic spot.

The Vršič Pass is a winding mountain road which snakes up the Julian Alps from Lake Jasna.

The road is closed for over 5 months a year due to snow and when possible the drive is not for the faint of heart.

The serpentine road winds its way up the gorge and includes over 50 hairpin bends.

Some of the bends and parts of the route are limited to a single lane so care is needed when driving up!

The drive is worth it, however, as the views along the route are simply spectacular. We stopped so many times to take photos that it took us over 2 hours to reach the summit of the pass with its incredible views across the Triglav National Park.”

Admiring Slap Savica

Alex from Swedish Nomad suggests hiking to the waterfall Slap Savica close to Bohinj, and I can definitely second this recommendation.

Even if it was tiring to climb all the stairs what was waiting at the end was very rewarding.

Here’s what Alex says:

“Slap Savica is one of Slovenia’s most spectacular waterfalls. It’s the source of Sava Bohinjka, and the third most visited attraction.

What makes it even more special is the fact that its watercourse is divided into two parts in the hidden undergrounds.

To go here, you can either walk along the marked trail, or take a car/bicycle to the Savica hut and parking place. From there it’s just a short walk to the waterfall.

The entrance fee is currently 3 Euro.

Many visitors also take the chance to drink the spring water here, which is said to have healing powers and make you look younger.

If you’re traveling to Lake Bled or Bohinj, a stop at Slap Savica should be on every itinerary.

The color of the water is mesmerizing, and the waterfall always has a good flow.

NOTE: it can get crowded here, and you should also know that there’s a fence blocking the access to the waterfall. So, this is an attraction you just have to admire with your eyes as it’s not possible to go for a swim here.”

Falling in love even more with Bohinj

Bohinj is at the very top of my “best places to visit in Slovenia” list.

I was a bit wary before my second trip there, not being sure if it was really that spectacular or that was just my memory idealizing the place but as it turned out there was nothing to worry about.

Bohinj is jaw dropping! Crystal clear waters of the lake meet with harsh slopes of mountains creating an unforgettable landscape.

The most popular image of Bohinj is the idyllic view of the bridge and a small church in the back but when you go to the other side of the lake (preferably by boat, it’s such a beautiful experience!) it’s even more stunning there!

Taking the cable car up to Vogel mountain

While you’re at Lake Bohinj don’t miss the cable car up to Vogel mountain.

On a clear day you’re in for a treat as views from up there are just spectacular! You can admire Lake and the surrounding area with high peaks of the most beautiful mountains in Slovenia!

When I visited it was cloudy and the landscape was barely visible but what I could see was still really impressive.

This is probably the easiest way to see best views of stunning Julian Alps from above.

In the winter time you can also go skiing at Vogel.

Going for one of the most unusual train rides ever

Kylie from Between England and Iowa went for the car train ride between Most na Soci and Bohinjska Bistrica and loved it. I definitely share her enthusiast for this journey as I took it too and it was so much fun!

Here’s what Kylie says:

“An interesting way to see the Slovenian scenery is from the car train! It’s a 40 minute journey between Most Na Soci and Bohinjska Bistrica and costs around 40 Euro per vehicle (passengers included).

Cars drive onto a decked platform. There’s not much space between the cars and the railings, you can get out when the train is in the station but you do have to stay in the vehicle while the train is moving!

Of course I recommend sitting in the front seat to get the best views!

The route cuts right through a mountain range going through one particular tunnel that’s 6327 meters in length, plunging you into the darkness for 7 minutes!

Keep an eye out at some of the stations along the way, to ‘change tracks’ a man will jump on a bicycle and switch the track manually!”

Getting the adrenaline rush in Bovec

When I visited Bovec I was really unlucky with the weather as it was raining cats and dogs and I couldn’t do any of my planned activities (like zip-line that I was really excited about).

But LeAnna from WellTraveledNebraskan had a great time in Bovec, here’s what she says:

“It seems like just about anywhere you go in Slovenia, you are greeted by gorgeous views and plenty to do.

However, out of all our stops in Slovenia, our favorite by far, was making a base camp (no, literally…we tent-camped) near Bovec – one of the best places in Slovenia.

We chose Bovec because of the sheer amount of things that we could do nearby in addition to our phenomenal views of camping at the foothills of the gorgeous mountains!

For adventure seekers, you can go white water rafting on the Soca river or for those wanting to see the gorgeous blue waters of the river without getting IN it, you can hike through the stunning Soca Gorge or head nearby for waterfall views and swims!

Of course, we HAD to make the drive up into the mountains where you can actually stand and look out into Italy, Slovenia AND Austria all simultaneously!!!

There was plenty to do for all types of travelers (shoot, we went as a family!) from those looking for a bit of nature and respite to adventure seekers.

The views are second to none, the food delicious and the memories will last a life-time!”

Visiting Brda, the wine region of Slovenia

Ellie from Soul Travel included Brda in her Slovenia itinerary , here’s why:

“Nestled right up against the Italian border, Goriska Brda is one of Slovenia’s finest wine regions.

Haven’t heard of Slovenian wine? You’d be forgiven, as most of it is consumed within Slovenia before exporters get a look in.

After a visit to Edi Simcic winery in Brda we were smitten, particularly with the light whites we tasted against a backdrop of rolling hills and farmhouses that looked every bit as beautiful as Tuscany.

You can happily spend a day or two touring wine estates in the Brda region (either book a tour or contact wine estates independently), we recommend staying at the beautiful San Martin hotel (click here to see the details and book the place!). ”

Enjoying another wine region of Slovenia – Vipava valley

Vipava Valley is another Slovenian region famous for its wine, a really good one.

Due to the microclimate the fruits grow here much better and as a result we can enjoy amazing wines and preserves.

But there are more reasons to visit Vipava Valley.

The area is very scenic and kind of idyllic, making it a perfect getaway to rest and enjoy the surrounding nature and views.

Visiting Gorica

Karen from Wanderlustingk suggests visiting Gorica – one of the unknown regions of Slovenia:

“Gorica is one of Slovenia’s hidden gems.

This beautiful wine region in Slovenia, close to the Italian border, has medieval cities, stunning vineyards, and a quiet beauty that makes you wonder how everyone isn’t going crazy over the area.

I ended up going to Šmartno, one of the old medieval towns built onto a hilltop. I loved wandering around the ancient streets with ivy everywhere is straight out of a fairytale.

Be sure to try the one euro wine at any of the local cafes that is just as good as the Italian wine on the other side of the border (which you can see from there).

Luckily, ecotourism dominates here, so you can feel good in knowing that your money is going back to the community.

If you’re interested in the local wine (both red and white), you can rent a bike to cycle along the rolling hills and to visit many of the wineries.”

Exploring mining and lace town Idrija

Kristin from TravelPast50 enjoyed the mining town Idrija a lot and recommends visiting it too:

“A worthwhile day trip from Ljubljana, up into the heart of Slovenia, is Idrija. This mountain town, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a busy center of mercury mining for nearly 500 years.

The surrounding landscape belies the hardships of this industry, but a visit reveals the engineering and labor, fortitude and devastation the mercury mines engendered.

Idrija’s mercury mining started in 1490. The mine was closed temporarily in 1977, reopened later, but finally closed for good in 1988.

Luckily, a new industry of making electronic components was already underway.

Before touring the mines, a walk along the Idrija canal demonstrates how this alpine city has turned its history into an advantage.

The canal was built to divert water from the Idrijca river to a giant water wheel used until the 1940s to pump water from the mines. The canal now lines a beautiful recreation path through the woods, and the water runs clear.

The effects of mercury mining are laid out in a fascinating hour-long mine tour.

Of course, the brutal work took its toll on the miners. Smelters generally survived only five years on the job; others rarely lived beyond age 40.

Women In the town survived by remarrying and by providing for themselves–often making intricate lace.

Today, Idrija hosts a lace festival every June, marked by traditional and contemporary lace and fashion designs.”

Relaxing in the seaside town Portoroz

Carolyn of Holidays to Europe went to the small but charming seaside of Slovenia and had a really good time in Portoroz .

Here’s why you should visit it too:

“Slovenia’s top attraction and popular coastal resort town of Portoroz offers plenty of things to do.

Aside from the town’s pretty setting right on the sea, one of the main reasons visitors come to Portoroz are for its thermal and mineral spas.

Visitors have flocked to Portoroz since the 13th century when Monks discovered the healing properties of the sea water and the nearby Secovlje Salt Pans.

Here you can watch how salt is harvested and test out the benefits of brine and salt-pan mud in an outdoor spa.

In the town’s spa and wellness centers, particularly the beautiful Kempinski Palace Hotel, today’s visitors can re-charge their batteries and be pampered with various wellness therapies and spa treatments.

Thermal spas are just one of the things to do in Portoroz, though.

The waters of the Mediterranean are popular in summer for a refreshing swim, and the sandy beach is perfect for a stroll.

Seaside restaurants and cafes offer the perfect excuse to stop and admire the views and the promenade is the place to be seen on a summer’s evening.

If you prefer to be a bit more active, there are some excellent bike paths and walking trails around Portoroz.

One recommended walk is along the Pilgrim’s Path in Strunjan Nature Reserve where you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of Moon Bay.”

Falling for the charming town of Piran

Kathy from 50 shades of age visited Piran and was enchanted by its beauty.

“During a Mediterranean Cruise last year we opted to do a cycling tour to the town of Piran in Slovenia.

Due to inclement weather the cycling tour was cancelled so instead we set off towards the seaside town of Piran with a tour guide in the comfort of a SUV.

We drove through the port town of Koper and via green pastures, valleys and forest for around half an hour until we reached the charming coastal town of Piran.

We were immediately struck by the charm and beauty of this seaside town and learnt that Piran was part of the Venetian empire from the late 13th century to the end of the 18th century and then part of Italy from 1918 til 1947.

We arrived into the central town square and felt as though we had stepped right into a picture postcard. Ambling through the narrow laneways in the old town we learnt that most of the buildings possessed Venetian architecture and rich frescoes.

In the small bay fisherman were unraveling their fishing nets on the piers and locals were sitting by the sea, chatting and enjoying the warm sunshine and the sparkling sea along the promenade or riva.

What a gorgeous place to spend a leisurely Sunday in the sun!”

Discovering hidden beauty of Koper

Koper might not be the most obvious seaside choice in Slovenia – it’s known mostly for its big harbor and the entry point to the Slovenian coast . But the town has much more to offer.

The area was inhabited already in the ancient times and you can find around many remnants of the great past.

The old town is small but charming, with Titov Trg as its central square.

Be sure to climb the bell tower that offers great views of the city and afterwards get lost in the maze of the beautiful narrow streets.

Don’t miss the stroll around the marina too and enjoy the sea breeze!

Finding the true gem – the walled church in Hrastovlje

When speeding the motorway to Koper turn inland some 20kms before the city and you will find one of the biggest gems of Slovenia – Holy Trinity Church in Hrastovlje.

It is surrounded by the thick wall built in the 16th century that was made to protect the local people from the Turkish attacks.

From the outside the church doesn’t look that impressive but inside you will find spectacular Gothic frescoes from the end of the 15th century with the most famous one of the “Danse Macabre” (Dance of Death).

Admiring views of Velika Planina

Chrysoula from Travel Passionate suggests area of Velika Planina and The Herdsmen’s settlement:

“If you find yourself in Slovenia, Velika Planina is a natural piece of heaven that you simply can’t miss.

This amazing area is a great spot to start a hiking trip and enjoy the beautiful view of the Kamnik Alps and the whole Ljubljana basin.

You can also spend some days simply admiring the Velika Planina area and The Herdsmen Settlement that can be found here.

The Herdmens settlement in this part of Slovenia is unique in size and beauty amongst Europe and makes for an interesting trip for foreigners every year.

And if you do manage to make it to this part of the world, get ready to be charmed by an atmosphere that seems like it’s coming from a different timeframe.

You will find small cottages with roofs made of pine shingles which look more like huts than houses.

The best time to visit The Herdsmen Settlement is between June and September when herdsmen are present and taking care of their animals.

You will be spoiled with delicious dairy products and traditional dishes made by the herdsmen themselves.”

Underground kayaking in Mežica mine

A friend of mine Ewa went kayaking in Mežica mine and recommends it as one of the best Slovenia activities:

“Mining of zinc and lead ore finished in Mežica in 1994 and the mine was closed down what resulted in stopping the pumps that removed water from the lowest corridors.

In consequence, water flooded them. This did not mean the end of the mine.

Years later, it was reopened, this time as a tourist attraction, where you can now try underground kayaking.

You will get special gum boots, a suit and a helmet with a headlamp and take the original train, that the miners used to get down to work.

After that you will get into a kayak and start exploring the underground flooded tunnels. You can even swim down a small waterfall!

This adventure is followed by a lunch similar to that eaten by miners years ago – you can enjoy some cheese, pate, prsut ham and bread.

There is also a small museum!”

Exploring Postojna Cave

Postojna Cave is one of the most important things to see in Slovenia. But it gets the hype for a reason!

This is the second longest cave in the world, with around 20kms of underground corridors. Visitors get to see only 5,5 kms (most of which is ridden by train) but it is still so impressive!

The Postojna Cave is huge and incredibly beautiful, you walk around with the jaw dropped.

It is also very diverse and the views around change often, another one is better than previous.

What’s more there are numerous events hosted inside the cave, such as music concerts or basketball games!

Visiting Predjama Castle

Another one of amazing Slovenia destinations, located only 9kms away from Postojna Cave is Predjama Castle – one of the most unique castles in the world.

Part of it is hidden in cave that in the 15th century saved the local knight and owner – Erazm of Predjama.

To everyone’s huge surprise he managed to survive in the castle for a year of siege, teasing attackers by throwing fresh fruits at them.

Eventually he was betrayed by one of the servants and killed when he was in the toilet.

It’s definitely worth to go inside the castle – the exhibitions might be so-so but seeing the construction glued to the rocks and cave is really impressive!

Exploring another famous underground system – Skocjan Caves

Corinne from Reflections Enroute recommends visiting another amazing underground system – Skocjan Caves :

“ Skocjan Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage site in Slovenia, not far from the border of Italy.

Tucked into this small corner of the country, these caves are massive. It’s hard to believe that such big holes are hidden underground.

You can only visit the caves on a guided tour, which they do in many different languages.

After meeting up with your guide, you have a short walk to the entrance, and the very beginning of the descent into the caves is probably the smallest tunnel, which for some is difficult if they suffer at all from claustrophobia.

However that tunnel quickly opens up to the rooms and caverns that are so large that in some many people can be in there and it won’t feel crowded.

The tour lasts about two hours and there is a lot of standing, climbing and descending of stairs, but it is a wonderful experience.

We had a few small children on our tour and they enjoyed it as well.

Falling for Ptuj

Even if these days Ptuj is a small and quiet town at the outskirts of the country there’s so much history behind it.

Did you know this is the oldest town in Slovenia, dating back to the Stone Age times?

The current look of the center comes from the Austria-Hungary time, with the castle towering above the red-roofed houses.

If you would like to spend some time in a charming town where life goes by slowly then Ptuj is for you.

Visiting Maribor – second biggest city in Slovenia

While most of the tourists focus on Ljubljana Maribor, located in the east of the country (not far from Ptuj, mentioned above), is well worth a visit too.

This is one of the best cities in Slovenia, founded in the 12th century and up to this day is full of great things to do in Maribor , interesting monuments or charming lanes and corners.

Maribor also has a great alternative to Ljubljana’s Metelkova -it’s called Pekarna and it’s the independent culture hub located in the former military bakery.

But Maribor is mostly known thanks to wine.

Vineyards are located just outside the center (you can clearly see them on the surrounding hills), the city is also home to the oldest grapevine in the world!

Stopping in Celje on the way between Maribor and Ljubljana

I feel like Celje is one of the most underrated cities in Slovenia.

This is yet another charming place with the architecture from Austria-Hungary times and red rooftops all over the center.

It’s worth to go up to the castle towering above to get the best views of the city and surrounding area as well as to learn numerous legends about the place.

What I liked the most, however, was the local museum in Celje showing the recent history of the city so no boring artifacts from the past. It was such a gem!

Relaxing at Terme Olimia Wellness

Denise from Inhetvliegtuig.nl spent some time relaxing at Terme Olimia Wellness and definitely recommends that:

“Terme Olimia is located in the small town of Podcetrtek, in the east of Slovenia. It’s the largest wellness center in Slovenia, with several hotel options.

Tourists, locals and top athletes come here for peace, tranquility, and rehabilitation.

If you don’t have kids and want to enjoy the silence, visit the adults-only Wellness Center Orhidelia. A very chic complex with great spa-facilities, a gym, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

Families are welcome at Wellness Centre Termalija. Where they have great facilities for kids as well.

Both places are connected with an underground corridor.

Visiting Slovenia – practical information

How to get to slovenia.

The easiest way is flying.

Ljubljana international airport is located some 20kms away from the city and is served by numerous airlines from all over Europe, the main one being Adria – Slovenian national airlines.

Landing in here is a real treat as the views are breathtaking.

Slovenia is also fairly well connected by train, there are daily direct connections between Ljubljana and Italy ( Trieste and Udine), Croatia ( Zagreb ) and Austria (Villach, Graz and Vienna ). Visit the website of Slovenian Railways to check the schedule.

There are also buses serving numerous international routes all over Europe. You can get all the information at the website of Ljubljana bus station.

How to travel around Slovenia?

The best way would be to rent a car – driving in Slovenia is easy as roads are very good.

But don’t worry if you need to rely on public transport as it’s not that bad either. Vast network of trains and buses can get you to numerous places all over the country.

Dear Kami, I have been reading your posts for some time and I must say that I like the precision with which you approach your topics. My impression is that you explore them into depth and thus provide a handful of useful information to fellow travelers. And most importantly: you definitely succeed at filling your readers with wanderlust! (At least that is the case of myself. :)) I have decided to comment on this post because I live in Maribor, Slovenia, and I was glad to see that my home country was described in such a positive and inviting way. However, I find it quite paradoxical that in Slovene’s public discourse there is a lot of moaning about the smallness of our country while many travelers and tourists perceive it as a uniquely pleasing trait. I found out that the more I travel and explore the world the more I like Slovenia. Not in a cynical way. Rather in a way that the comparison – or the contrast – helps to reevaluate the perception of the country. Now I see Slovenia as my harbor from which I explore the world and where I return to rejuvenate. And, yes, it IS very beautiful! ;) I gladly read your blog and I wish you safe and pleasant journeys! Top 50 Attractions in Slovenia (2023) - with Maps and Photos

Slovenia is a fantastic country full of attractions and adventurous opportunities. The country’s capital city, Ljubljana , fascinates its visitors easily. However, in addition to the Slovenian capital, there are several other beautiful small towns and national parks in the country that you should also consider visiting at least once.

We have collected countless places to visit, and we just couldn’t stop; Slovenia is so diverse and fascinating. Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of the 50 most interesting sights you should see. Learn about the best Slovenian towns, mountains, lakes, gorges, caves , and more.

Slovenia can be divided into four large territorial units. These are:

There are certain parts which are more well-known among tourists. These are the following 3 parts of Slovenia:

• Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps (Goriska and Gorenjska regions)
• Ljubljana and its surroundings
• The Coastal region

The Soca Valley, within the Triglav National Park and close to the Italian border, is considered an outstanding destination, while on the other side of the park it is mostly Bled and Bohinj that attract tourists.

Triglav National Park

Suppose you’re planning a trip to the Triglav National Park and looking for accommodation there. In that case, you need to choose between staying around Bled and Bohinj or in the vicinity of Bovec (i.e. the Soca Valley).

This is because Slovenia’s highest mountain, Mt Triglav , lies in the middle of the Triglav National Park – dividing the park in two, thus separating the towns of Bled and Bovec from each other. The two cities are almost two hours apart.

• St. George’s Church: A Roman Catholic church located on the mountain above Piran.

#2: Lake Bled

Lake Bled is one of Slovenia’s most popular attractions. Many visitors from all over the world come here to admire the crystal-clear water, the ancient castle, and the small island in the lake, essentially the only island in Slovenia.

• Bled Island: A tiny island in the lake with the 17 th century Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary on it. It can be reached by boat or bark (pletna).
• Bled Castle : One of the oldest Slovenian castles on top of the cliffs towering on the shores of the lake. It's within walking distance and offers fantastic views of the lake and the Julian Alps.
• Diving, paragliding, e-bike riding, and many other activities: Lake Bled and its surroundings are a paradise for active recreation. There are a lot of things you can do here. Who knows, maybe as a scuba diver you'll find the famous bell in the lake's depths.

#3: Vintgar Gorge

Very close to Lake Bled, in the Triglav National Park, you will find the romantic Vintgar Gorge (or Bled Gorge), which is undoubtedly one of Slovenia's most extraordinary and beautiful sights.

The gorge, well-lined by the Radovna River , can be walked along the designated road in about two hours, with the beautiful Sum waterfall at the end. The water is amazingly clean, and you can also see fish. Vintgar Gorge is a must-see part of a trip to Slovenia.

• Sum Waterfall: The main attraction of the gorge is the waterfall descending from a height of 15 meters. It is best to visit in the spring, and after rain, since the water’s volume is the largest at that time.
• Gorge Tour: The Vintgar Gorge can be easily hiked along the established wooden bridges.
• Bohinj Railway Bridge: Built in 1906, the stone bridge is 33.5 meters above the road. If you're lucky, you can see the train passing through.

• The entrance to the gorge is 4 km from Lake Bled.
• It can be reached by bus or taxi. You should inquire at the tourist information office in Bled for an accurate timetable.

#4 Lake Bohinj

Slovenia's largest natural lake is Lake Bohinj , located in the heart of the Julian Alps. Three main things make the lake and its surroundings a must-see.

• In Slovenia, two lakes are usually highlighted: Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. Both are visited by a lot of tourists, but perhaps the crowds are smaller at Lake Bohinj.
• There are many legends circulating about the place. You can make your visit even more romantic by reading a bit about these legends before walking through this fantastic place.
• The lake and its surroundings are real hiking and sports paradise. There are many activities there worth trying (e.g. rafting, e-bike riding, horse riding, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, boating). These will make it even more exciting to be there, and in the end, you won't even want to go home from this wonderful place.
• The lake: In the lake, you can go boating, kayaking, cycling, or just walking around.
• Savica Falls : One of the sources of the Sava River is the waterfall, which falls several hundred meters high. First, you have to go to Ukanc to the Sava shelter, from where you can reach the lookout point through many, many stairs from the parking lot, from where you can admire not only the waterfall but also the lake.
• Zlatorog (Golden Horn), the goat’s statue: Everyone is taking pictures with him. Legend has it that he lived on the shores of the lake and grows healing flowers from his blood, and his horns are the key to the valley's secret treasure chest.
• Bohinj can be accessed through many small villages, typically from the direction of Bled, where the road takes you through a motorway.

#5: Mostnica gorge and Voje Valley

Mostnica gorge is an amazingly beautiful 2 km long gorge, carved by the alpine river near Lake Bohinj. The crystal-clear water, and the canyon that is in some places up to 20 meters deep and 1 meter wide, are truly captivating. In the depths, there is a green stream. You may encounter strangely shaped rocks on the road, and if your eyes are sharp enough, you might even see a little elephant.

• The "little elephant": A hollow rock that resembles a small elephant when viewed from the front or side.
• Voje Valley: Upon reaching the end of the gorge, you’ll find yourself at the Voje Valley. There are many small idyllic cottages in the valley, and you might even run into lambs if you're lucky. To end the easy, effortless hike, you can enjoy some great local food and drinks in the Alpine hut at the end of the valley.
• Mostnica Waterfall: Just after leaving the last alpine hut, you will find the beautiful Mostnica Waterfall. The easy hike through the Voje Valley ends here. From here on out, you might as well start climbing Triglav .

It's worth driving to Lake Bohinj by car from Bled and then hiking to Stara Fuzina , from where the gorge is very close.

Riding a bike through the valley and then having a nice lunch or dinner in the last Alpine hut is truly an experience. To do this, it is worth renting an electric bike or using the services of a local tour guide. It can add a lot to the experience.

#6: Mt Triglav

Triglav is the highest point in Slovenia and the Julian Alps (2864 m) , as well as the national symbol of Slovenia. The latter is not insignificant, as Slovenians say that all "true Slovenians" must stand at the top of Triglav at least once.

Of course, climbing Triglav is not the easiest task. At the same time, anyone who gets up to the top can say that they have seen the whole of Slovenia.

There are several routes to climb, which vary in difficulty. We have written in more detail about climbing Triglav earlier, where we have collected the most important information. Our guide could be a good starting point, in case you do want to climb it.

Bovec is Slovenia’s paradise of adventure . It is located in one of the most beautiful valleys in Europe, the Soca River Valley. If you visit this place, you will find various opportunities to do outdoor sports such as rafting, kayaking, canyoning, and much more.

Historically, there are a couple of particularly interesting aspects of the city, as it was part of the trade route between Trieste and Vienna, and in World War I, Bovec was part of the Isonzo Front.

• Rafting, canyoning, skiing, snowshoeing, zip-lining, and many other outdoor activities: The whole city is essentially an adventure - and sports center. Anyone who visits Bovec can choose from hundreds of programs. It is mandatory to try at least three of them.
• Ravelnik and Čelo open-air museums: The open-air museums on the 230 km long Peace Trail, which connects the heritage and institutions of the World War I Isonzo Front, allow you to gain a better understanding of this period in history.
• Soča River: Most of the programs mentioned above take place in or at the emerald-colored Soča River. However, even if you don't want a program of that nature, it's still worth visiting some sections of the river, as it is amazingly beautiful.

Arriving from Bled, you have two options:

• Passing Triglav, Kranjska Gora takes you to Italy, from where you can drive back (in 1.5 hours) . This can be tiring because of all the serpentine, but at the same time, it is very spectacular.
• Motorail departs from Bohinjska Bistrica, which takes motorists by train to Most na Soči. From there, you can quickly get to Bovec by car (in 1.5 - 2 hours) .

#8: Soca Valley

The Soca River is one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. Its water is crystal clear emerald and has been carving its way through numerous waterfalls and gorges for thousands of years. One of the wildlife specialties of the river is the Soca Trout, which attracts thousands of anglers from all over the world.

You'll encounter a lot of beauty in the valley, so another “Top 50” list could be put together just from that. We've still highlighted a couple of them now and selected them as some of the main attractions.

#9: Tolmin Gorge

Tolmin Gorge, as the name indicates, is located near the town of Tolmin, less than 39 km from Bovec. The gorge is famous for its beautiful water as well as its narrow, winding path.

Upon buying a ticket for the gorge, a local tour guide will then escort you inside the canyon. It is worth redeeming your ticket online in advance.

#10: Kobarid

Kobarid is the second most popular city in the Valley of Soca (the first is Bovec). The city is also suitable for rafting, kayaking, canyoning, hiking and cycling. If you like outdoor sports, you’ll find plenty of activities here.

#11: Trenta Valley

The Trenta Valley is an area formed by a glacier in the Triglav National Park in Slovenia. Its valley is the northernmost part of the Soca River, and it is also where the source of the river can be found. The valley is one of the starting points for the hiking trail leading to Triglav Mountain.

#12: Kozjak Waterfall

Kozjak Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall next to Kobarid. Located about 27 kilometers from Bovec, the waterfall is also a popular hiking spot, photo point, and canyoning route.

The waterfall is one of Slovenia's most well-known and most photographed rapids. It can be visited every day, even in winter.

• Canyoning: if you want to see the waterfall not only on a trip, join one of the canyoning tours, the finishing point of which is Kozjak Waterfall. The tour starts with a shuttle service from Bovec and continues in the cove upon arriving in Kobarid.
• Hiking: if you don't want to walk down the gorge, visit the endpoint of the waterfall, in the iconic cove (see photos)
• Napoleon Bridge: A few minutes from the waterfall, you will find one of the most popular bridges in the Soca Valley, the Napoleon Bridge, which is definitely worth visiting and walking through.

#13: Boka Waterfall

You may have seen photos of Boka Falls . Although not Slovenia's tallest waterfall, it is without a doubt one of the most spectacular. The 106-meter-high waterfall can be viewed from several points.

There is no admission for visiting the waterfall.

You can see the Boka Waterfall from the dedicated lookout point. The hiking trail is about 15 minutes long and is signposted along the way, so you don't have to be afraid of getting lost. The road to the lookout is not difficult, but due to the terrain, it is recommended that you wear suitable hiking shoes. The road is gravel and staired, so the terrain requires attention.

#14: Lipica and the Lipizzaner Stud

Lipica is a village a few kilometers from the Slovenian coast and the Skocjan Cave. The sights of the village, famous for its stud farm, are the horses themselves and the Lipica farm where the animals live.

Don't be fooled by Ljubljana's tiny size! The Slovenian capital , as small as it is, hides just as many experiences. It's the perfect destination for a weekend getaway, or you can easily sign up for a whole week with a variety of activities.

• Ljubljana Castle: it is almost impossible to lose sight of the more than 900-year-old castle towering over the city. Of course, it has been rebuilt several times since its inset, which only adds to its historical value.
• Tivoli Park: Several of Ljubljana's attractions can be found in the city's green oasis, Tivoli Park. So, if you're going this way, don't just expect to be lying around.

#17: Rafting on the Soca River

Around Bovec, you have plenty of opportunities to try rafting on the Soca River (which winds the Triglav National Park in half). Whitewater rafting is a real adrenaline booster program for both adults and children from the age of 6 years (or 4 years in some sections).

#18: Julian Alps (Julijske Alpe)

The Julian Alps are a mountain range spanning Italy and Slovenia. Most of the mountain range is located in the Triglav National Park on the Slovenian side. Its highest point is The Triglav Mountain (2864 m), which is climbed by thousands of people every year.

#19: Postojna Cave

Located about half an hour from the Slovenian coast, Postojna's stalactite cave is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . The huge underground formation with light rail is not only an immersive program but also an excellent Plan B for rainy weather.

So, I suggest you make sure to add it to your list if you go to Slovenia.

The 123 meters high Predjama Castle is right above the Postojna Stalactite Cave. The most romantic story in the castle, which is more than 800 years old, is about Knight Erazem, who defended the castle against the attackers for more than a year. You can find the website of the castle here.

#21: Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora is a medium-sized town on the northern border of Slovenia. The city is located right at the junction of the Italian-Austrian-Slovenian borders, providing a sea of opportunities to cross the border.

The city is a real ski resort in winter, so if you like skiing, it can be an ideal destination for your next skiing trip.

#23: Logar valley (Logarska Dolina)

The valley, which lies on the northern side of Ljubljana, is quite close to Bled. The area is very similar to the Triglav National Park, although its area is much smaller. Cycling and hiking are the most popular activities in the area.

• Long-haired Highland Cattle: Although the long-haired highland cattle are from Scotland, you can now meet these beautiful animals in Slovenian pastures.

#24: Seven Lakes Valley

Located next to Ukanc, the Seven Lakes region (also known as the Valley of The Triglav Lakes) is one of the most beautiful and well-known hiking destinations in the Julian Alps (part of the Triglav National Park) in Slovenia. The smaller area with larger lakes is ideal for overnight or even multi-day hut hikes.

The area, which has been protected since 1926, consists of not 7 lakes, but a total of 10 lakes. You can also see Brown Lake, the Great Lake, or the Twin Lakes.

• Hut to hut, a multi-day tour of the park: for several days (ideal for 2-3 days), you can tour all the lakes and beautiful places in the area.
• Day trip: if you don't like multi-day hikes with large bags, visit any part of the park and take a relaxing few-hour walk.

#26: Pokljuka

Pokljuka is one of Slovenia's most iconic places. The vast Alpine plateau, decorated with pine forests, is an ideal hiking area, picnic station, and bike tour destination.

The wooded plateau is located in northwestern Slovenia at an altitude of 1300 meters. The countryside is part of the Triglav National Park.

If you are in Pokljuka, be sure to visit Me Planina Zajamniki. The world of charming mountain cottages, fresh air, and grazing cows is guaranteed to relax you.

#27: Mezica Mine

The Mezica Mine is an increasingly popular mining museum offering more and more in-house activities. The now inactive mine has become a popular destination for couples and families alike. Its popularity is due to its three main programs.

• Underground kayaking: Unlike surface kayaking, there is no need for an earlier rowing experience here. Anyone can try the around 1-hour long rowing program.
• Underground bike riding: For bike lovers, this program is a real gem. It's not every day you can go underground and drive yourself forward on a bicycle.
• Mining Museum: Since the mine now operates as a museum, you can take a look at the daily lives of the miners who work here.

Attention! Warm clothing is recommended for all programs. If you are afraid of cramped spaces and confinedness, then we do not recommend these programs. Swimming skills are essential for kayaking.

#28: Lake Jasna

Located in Kranjska Gora (part of the Triglav National Park), Lake Jasna is a classic Alpine glacier lake. Slovenia's lakes and rivers are famous for their fabulous color - and that's no different when it comes to Lake Jasna.

Its water’s color is much brighter than that of Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj. Although the size of the lake itself is smaller than the two mentioned above, if you do not want to go to Bled or Bohinj, Lake Jasna offers a great alternative. It is also less well-known among tourists.

• Excursion around the lake: The lake can be comfortably walked around in about 20-30 minutes. It's an ideal program for older people, with a stroller, or even for anyone after a heavy lunch.
• Bike rental: If you like to ride a bike, you can rent a bike and ride around the lake.
• SUP rental: The increasingly conquering "Stand Up Paddle" is also available here in the summer season from May to October. If you haven't done it yet, it's worth trying.

#29: Pericnik Waterfall

Peričnik Waterfall with its height of 52 m is one of the tallest and best-known waterfalls in Slovenia . The rapids in Vrata Valley actually consist of two waterfalls.

A hiking trail from Mojstrana leads to the site. Interestingly, you can walk behind the Lower Pericnik waterfall, so you can even walk around the rapids.

#30: Kluze Fortress

Built in 1472, the fortification (originally used as a defense against Turks) played an important role during the Napoleonic Wars and in World War I. The fortification is located above the gorges of the Koritnica River.

The fantastic view makes it worth visiting even if you don’t find fortifications to be particularly attractive.

#31: Virje Waterfall

Virje Falls is a tiny waterfall just 3.7 kilometers away from Bovec. The charming waterfall is famous for its special shape. The increasingly popular local specialty is an ideal destination for an easy walk nearby.

#32: Mt Vogel (1922 m)

If you're in the Bled area and want to rise above the mountains, take a cable car up to Mt Vogel . Vogel's cable car, which is a ski resort in winter, does not stop in summer - it transports passengers to an altitude of 1535 meters.

We particularly recommend this program for alpine sight lovers, as it is less than a 30-minute drive from Bled. Here you’ll have plenty of opportunities for hiking and excursions, and if you just want to relax, you can also spend a pleasant picnic here with a good book. The ideal daily program for mountain lovers.

• Paragliding: most of the paragliding jumps in the area take place from the Vogel Mountain, where the tour guides take you by shuttle, after which you arrive around Lake Bohinj.
• Lake Bohinj: Lake Bohinj, which can also be seen from Mount Vogel, is a great place to relax. Here you can mainly ride bikes, take a boat or a SUP.

#33: Skocjan Cave

Slovenia's most spectacular cave system is about 40 minutes from the Postojna Stalactite Cave in southern Slovenia. The symbol of the Slovenian Karst region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The deep cave system under the village of Skocjan was formed by the River Reka, which lies 55 km from Skocjan and disappears under the village . The length of the cave system is 6 km in total, its maximum height between the entrance and the deepest known siphon is 250 m.

The underground gorge is in several places widening into spacious halls, the largest of which, the Martel Hall , is 308 m long and has an average width of 89 m. It impresses its visitors with its dizzying height, and with its maximum height of 146 meters.

The huge Skocjan cave near the Slovenian coast is a great program for rainy days. Even if it's not raining, I encourage you to go see it on your way home, because the view is really worth that detour.

#34: Maribor

There are many attractions and activities to choose from in and around the city of Maribor , and finding the best ones is not an easy task. Maribor's most important attractions are located in the old town area, where you can see buildings with a lot of history.

• Maribor's main square: The Main Square, also frequently visited by the locals, is located in the middle of the old town.
• Maribor Castle: The castle visited by all tourists arriving in Maribor is located in the historic old town, a few streets from the synagogue.
• City park: It is not far from the old town and in addition to the many green plants, you can find fishponds and aquariums here.

#35: Vipava Valley

The Mediterranean-style Vipava Valley is only 1 hour from the Slovenian coast. The Mediterranean region resembling Tuscana is Slovenia's number one vineyard and wine region.

#36: Kocevje Region

The region of Kovecje is the southern part of Slovenia, bordering Croatia. The area, like the Triglav park, is wooded and green, although smaller and does not abound in as many outdoor sports (rafting, kayaking, zipline, etc.) as its northern brother.

#37: Krokar Jungle

The 51-hectare jungle is one of Slovenia's most lush forests. The green countryside is home to several hiking trails, which you can find as a "rog hiking trail". The abundance of mainly bees and pine reaches an average height of 50 meters, and some trees are hundreds of years old.

The special feature of the area is that 91% of it is covered with wood, which is considered very high (and rich) worldwide!

#38: Kostel Castle

Kostel Castle in the Kovecje region is one of Slovenia's few castles. The castle is located in the valley of the Kolpa River. The castle, surrounded by legends, even has an abandoned village.

The castle is only open in the summer from 11:00 to 18:00 and only on Saturdays and Sundays. You can find the website of the castle here .

#39: Bear Observation and Photography Tour

If I had to name an animal as a symbol of Slovenia, my choice would fall on brown bears. The preservation of the bear population in the country is very well watched and forest animals are respected throughout Slovenia.

Bears in Kocevsko Forest (Kocevje region) can be observed as part of a unique program.

Monitoring is only permitted as part of a guided tour and only with a local qualified (state-recognized) guide. There are protected wooden huts available for monitoring, which allow for safe inspection.

#40: Bovec Adventure Park

The adventure park in Bovec is real fun and a challenge for the whole family. The park is open every day, but it can only be visited by a driver. Therefore, you need to book a tour guide online.

Guided tour of the adventure park, opening hours:

The program is roughly 2 hours long, admission is only 29 euros for adults, and 23 euros for children. In high season, it is a few euros more expensive.

#41: Zelenci Nature Reserve

The Zelenci National Park or Nature Reserve is a part of Kranjska Gora . Close to the village of Podkoren, this charming reserve is famous throughout Europe for its iconic lake districts. The water, which averages 2 meters deep, is green in colour and is named after its colour as well (Zelenci means green in Slovenian).

It is an easy place for families with strollers and for older people as well , as the national park is located on flat terrain.

• Selfie on the wooden plank: Nowadays you can't leave the park without taking a selfie on the planks beforehand.

#42: Pustolovski Park Bovec

At Pustolovski Park in the Baza Sports Center in Bovec , you can test your skills and playfulness. The park is equipped with cableways and suspended planks and is open to children from the age of 3.

For adults, the entrance fee is approximately 25 euros , and for children, it costs around 15 euros (up to 12 years). The park is open from April until the end of September.

• Zipline: Try the 53-meter long sliding section.
• Mini cableway: The little ones are greeted with a lot of love by the "Bee", or bee track.
• Extreme track: If you like heights, this is where you should be. There are 2 ziplines with a length of 26 meters and an altitude of 20 meters.

#43: Kranjska Gora Bikepark

The bike park, open from April to mid-November , has open gates seven days a week. In the park, you can not only choose from tracks of different difficulty and techniques, but you can also rent a bike. So even if you don't want to take your own bike, you can still enjoy the paths offered by the park.

One day's admission is around €27, and an all-day bike rental is around €55.

Bovec abounds in the most beautiful gorges and canyons. The most popular canyon is Susec, which the stream of the same river has carved and shaped for its present form.

However, the beautiful world of the wet gorge can only be visited by a tour guide (a professional canyon guide recognized by the Slovenian state).

Both Bovec and Bled provide opportunities for cableway enthusiasts. In the zipline park or cableway park - you lead your way through steel ropes placed at different heights. Both parks can only be used by a local tour guide .

Although tours start 2-5 times a day, it’s worth booking online in advance ! Children are allowed from the age of 6.

#46: Ojstrica Lookout Point, Bled

The Ojstrica lookout point above Lake Bled is about a 20-minute walk away. The iconic resting place is the birthplace of many photos - as it offers the best view of Lake Bled. If you're in the area, you might want to take a look at the lake from there.

#47: Spicnik: The Heart-Shaped Road

Located in the city of Spicnik in northern Slovenia, not far from Maribor , is the hidden (and romantic) local landmark , the heart-shaped road. If you’re near Maribor, you should take a short detour and drive or walk across the charming little road.

In the heart of Europe there is a beautiful country, situated between the Alps, the Mediterranean sea, the Pannonian plain and the Karst. This country is Slovenia, a real gem with only two million inhabitants. It’s in fact so unique you can hardly select only 10 top destinations.

In Slovenia, there is only one island. It is located in the middle of a glacial alpine lake called Bled, which is one of the most picturesque natural attractions in the country. For centuries, it has attracted people that come there just to admire the landscape and enjoy the view or take advantage of the healing thermal springs.

On the lake, which is surrounded by the Julian Alps , you can for instance rent a traditional “pletna” boat, climb the 99 stone-steps staircase on the island and visit the St. Mary of the Assumptions church. Then ring a bell, make a secret wish to come true, try "potica" (a traditional Slovenian dessert) and jump into clean fresh water.

The most beautiful view of the lake is from the Bled castle, which rises 456 ft. up from the lake's surface. It is one of the oldest castles in that area with a nice restaurant where you should try a traditional pastry called Bled cream cake or kremšnita . When you return to the lakeshore, you should take a ride with a Bled coachman or go a brisk 4 miles long walk around the lake.

2. The Postojna cave and Predjama castle

The Postojna cave is the most visited underground cave in the world, characterized by an underground system of karst corridors, galleries and halls. The whole system is almost 15 miles long and combines four caves interconnected through the same underground river, Pivka. During a ninety minutes long guided tour, you will be amazed by stalagmites, stalactites, and formations called curtains or draperies.

The magnificent five metre tall white stalagmite is the symbol of Postojna cave and there is also a story of a baby dragon living in the cave. In the vivarium you can actually see the largest predator in the underground world;  the olm . Living in the water and being adopted to life in the dark, this unique creature can reach up to 11 inches in length. Furthermore, it can live almost 100 years and survive more than eight years without food.

3. The coastal town of Piran

One of the most romantic and authentic place on the Mediterranean coast is another Slovenian pearl: Piran. You will fall in love with this town of gorgeous Venetian-style architecture, surrounded with turquoise sea. Moreover, the food is yummy and the locals are incredibly hospitable.

Piran is an ideal place to just walk along the narrow streets, admire the sunsets, breathe fresh air and explore the old town. During the summer, you can enjoy concerts on Tartini square, which takes its name from the grand violin virtuoso Giuseppe Tartini, born in Piran. Everyone can find something to do from sports activities, visiting galleries and aquarium to relaxing in the Lepa Vida spa in the middle of the Sečovlje salt-pans. You should make a reservation for thalassotherapy far in advance. They say Piran is a town that grew on salt and they still produce salt in the natural traditional way. Visiting Piran is an unforgettable experience that you do not want to miss.

4. Ljubljana – the capital city

The capital city of Slovenia is the charming Ljubljana, whose name can be translated as "beloved". It has around 300.000 inhabitants and it is located in the middle of the country. Visiting the European Green Capital of 2016 will certainly not leave you indifferent.

The Ljubljanica river, which runs around the old castle hill, little bars and restaurants, bridges, old architecture, hotels, greenery, and the old market that offers a variety of home-made products, will stay in your heart forever. You will find it easy to communicate with people, since most Slovenians speak English fluently.

While you’re in Ljubljana, don't forget to take time to try some fine Slovenian wines and traditional cuisine in the old historical town. 5. The royal horses from Lipica

The pedigree is so important that in Slovenia there are, on each horse stall, displayed charts with different figures, dates and names like Maestoso, Allegro and Napolitano. A visit to the stud farm or the Museum of Carriages are really nice experiences, not to mention watching the training of the horses in a covered riding ground accompanied by music. You will never forget the Lipizzaner show and how difficult the figures are that the horses have to learn.

Since the oldest European stud farm in Lipica that has been breeding the same horses without interruption, it is considered a Slovenian cultural and historical monument. Therefore, you should definitely put it to your to do list. And during your visit to Lipica, you should go to charming villages and visit some nice restaurants around there, try a typical red wine called “Teran“, the best known from the region, and the Karst dry-cured ham, know as Kraški pršut.

Fun fact: Did you know that the Lipizzaner horses are born dark and gradually lighten with age, not achieving the “white” coat for which they are known until around 6–10 years of age?

6. The Triglav National Park and Soča river

The first two merge close to Radovljica in Gorenjska region to the river Sava, the longest river in the country. Soča, one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe, starts its path in Trenta valley, runs through canyons, gorges and amazing waterfalls. The deep emerald color of the river Soča and its crystal clearness is breathtaking.

From the 1st of April, when the winter closings are over, its banks are full of fly-fishermen duelling with the famous Soča trout. During the summer, the Soča river becomes the place with the highest potential for adrenalin sports like kayaking, canoeing, canyoning, bungee jumping, swimming, rafting or hiking.

Fun fact: Did you know that in 2007, several scenes for the Disney film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian were shot on the Soča rapids? 

7. Healing mineral and thermal water

Throughout Slovenia there are many regions, rich in different types of mineral and thermal water. The reason for such an abundance lies in its geological diversity of tectonic structure. There are 17 natural health and spa resorts in Slovenia and 78 known sources of mineral and thermal waters. Most of them are located in the Pannonian part of the country but you can find them in the other parts as well: in the Alps, the Adriatic sea and the Karst.

Water is life and depending of what you need or what you want, you can choose between health therapies, preventional medical treatments, pampering and relaxing programmes or just enjoy pools and water fun activities.

In Slovenia, there are two famous springs of drinking waters, rich with minerals and natural carbon dioxide bubbles: Donat Mg and Radenska. Donat Mg was discovered in 1908 in the health resort park in Rogaška Slatina, on the eastern part of Slovenia near the Croatian border. The second one is Radenska from Radenci, headed even more towards east, in the vicinity of Austrian and Hungarian border. Development of mineral water Radenska started in 1869, when the owner of the land filled the first bottles of the water.

8. Logar valley

The Logar valley is, among the other beauties, well known for its many waterfalls. The most famous is 295 ft. high Rinka fall. If you like adrenalin sports, you may, during the winter, climb the frozen waterfalls, experience cross-country or downhill skiing, sledding and ski touring.

In the summertime when the temperatures in the cities are too high for active holidays, the unspoilt nature of the landscape park of Logar valley is a great option. You can hike, bike, climb, visit local high-mountain farms and try delicious specialities such as: the upper Savinja stomach sausage “savinjski želodec“, dried pear dough pockets called žlinkrofi, buckwheat “žganci“, sour milk, homemade bread and cheeses, “potica“, butter, honey and much more.

And if you are eager for more adventures, you can also visit the other two valleys in the region: Robanov kot and Matkov kot.

9. Seeing the world's oldest vine in Maribor

The oldest vine in the world grows in Maribor. It is the second largest Slovenian city and it's located at the food of the wooded Pohorje mountain range in the northeast of the country. In the old city, named Lent, you can see almost half a millennium old vine plant that survived times of Turkish attacks and several infestations which destroyed many vineyards in the past, and of course both the first and the second world wars. Due to the confirmed age of the “Žametovka” or “Modra Kavčina” vine, it won a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest noble vine sort in the world still bearing grapes. The yearly harvest of up to 121 pounds of grapes is made into wine and poured into small bottles, designed by a famous artist Oskar Kogoj.

Maribor lies by the Drava river and is a part of one of the largest wine-growing regions of Slovenia, Styria “Štajerska“, famous for its white wines. There are numerous wine cellars and wineries around where you can try different wines and tasty local specialities. It is so nice to get to know different old customs and traditions in this part of the country.

Piran – salty surprises of the Mediterranean

The Piran Salt Pans, where salt and the world-class fleur de sel are still harvested using age-old methods, were the reason that Piran, the most beautiful town on the Slovenian coast, flourished. Many events are organised in Maribor throughout the year to honour the queen of vines, such as the Pruning of the Old Vine, the Harvest, St Martin’s Day Celebration and the Old Vine Festival. And, believe it or not, the Old Vine even has its own anthem that the people of Maribor like to sing.

The world’s first underground post office opened in Postojna Cave in 1899. 

Not far from Lake Bled on the slopes of the Jelovica Plateau, the Jama pod Babjim zobom Cave, the largest speleothem cave in the Julian Alps and one of the oldest caves in Slovenia, can be found and this magnificent natural attraction was formed during an ice age.

In sea depths, some 350 metres off the Piran shore, the so-called underwater Mt Triglav (Mt Triglav being the highest peak/point of Slovenia) is located. At 39.56 metres, making it the lowest point in the Slovenian sea.

The elegant white Lipizzan horses, considered to be one of the oldest horse breeds, are born dark and obtain their white coat with age.

The Martel Hall in Škocjan Caves is considered to be the largest underground hall in Slovenia so far discovered and is one of the largest in the world.

A special trnič cheese of distinctive shape is made at Velika planina, which is also known as the cheese of love as the shepherds used to give it to their sweethearts.

Potočka Zijalka Cave can be found above the Logar Valley, where the second oldest sewing needle in the world was found among other things.

The Old Vine in Maribor’s Lent endured numerous historical and natural upheavals. It failed to succumb even to the phylloxera louse, since it has its roots deep under the Drava River gravel.

In Ljubljana, visitors frequently come across an image of a dragon. It refers to the legend about Jason and the Argonauts, who also stopped at the Ljubljana Marshes during their famous journey, where Jason was said to defeat a fearsome dragon.

The scenic beauty of the Soča River Valley also inspired the creators of the film, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Several exciting scenes of the famous film were shot beside the Soča River.

The General Terms and Conditions determine the conditions and manner of using the Slovenian Tourist Board’s Media Library services. In the Media Library, users have at their disposal high-resolution photos and audio-visual recordings of the products and services offered by Slovenian tourism, which are to be used solely for non-commercial purposes as defined below.

General rules of application

Registration is required to use the Media Library’s services. Registration is available to any legal entity in the Republic of Slovenia and abroad, regardless of their legal form, whose activities involve marketing, promoting and presenting Slovenia as a tourist destination .

Photos and audio-visual recordings (hereafter: materials) may be used free of charge for all non-commercial publications that constitute promotion of Slovenia as a tourist destination, abroad or in the Republic of Slovenia , in accordance with these General Terms and Conditions.

The right to use the materials is not limited in terms of time or place (the use is permitted in Slovenia and other countries) unless a restriction relating to location and duration of use is specifically provided for an individual item of material .

The Slovenian Tourist Board reserves the right to revoke a user’s right to use certain materials at any time.

The rights acquired based on these General Terms and Conditions may not be transferred to third parties.

Citing the source and authorship

Photos and audio-visual recordings may only be used with consistent citation of author/co-authors and source: www.slovenia.info .

Rights of use

A registered user of the Media Library shall obtain the following non-exclusive economic rights to use the downloaded photos and audio-visual recordings:

• the right of reproduction and distribution,
• the right of making available to the public,
• the right of public presentation,
• the right of including photos in other copyright work.

The above rights refer to all forms of non-commercial and free-of-charge online posts, print media, audio-visual media services and other communication channels, regardless of the type of media (print, digital), which includes:

• Digital catalogues, e-magazines, newsletters (solely for the purposes of free distribution);
• Publication in print and other media that report on the Slovenian tourism products and services or promote Slovenia as a tourist destination;
• Use on social media as part of organic posts (reporting on an event, press releases (solely unpaid posts);
• Printed promotional materials, prospectuses, leaflets, brochures (solely for the purposes of free distribution);

The above forms of use include solely a free-of-charge form of using materials for the purposes of promoting tourism activities and services in the Republic of Slovenia or presenting Slovenia as a tourist destination.

Prohibited forms of using materials/commercial use of materials

Using materials for commercial purposes , such as reproduction on postcards, T-shirts, books, magnets, embedding audio-visual inserts in one’s own promotional materials, all forms of external advertising (stationary billboards, digital advertising, etc.), use in advertisements unrelated to the promotion of Slovenia as a tourist destination, use on websites that are not intended to present Slovenian tourism products and services and similar activities, is not included in these General Terms and Conditions and is prohibited .

It is strictly prohibited to use materials on media and distribution channels that are marketed or sold to users (books, school textbooks, other commercial publishing, calendars, postcards, fast-moving consumer goods (clothes and other products), advertising of non-tourism products and services, reproduction of materials on vehicles, etc.).

Audio-visual materials (video)

Using audio-visual materials is allowed only in the unchanged form available in the Media Library . Transformations, adaptations, clips, embeddings, and instances of using individual shots in one’s own audio-visual works, even if intended for promotional purposes, is prohibited.

Breaches of General Terms and Conditions

Any breach of economic and/or moral rights of the authors of photographs or audio-visual recordings may constitute a criminal offence and may result in substantive and damage liability of the user.

The entity breaching copyright pertaining to the material shall reimburse the Slovenian Tourist Board for all the damage incurred to it due to the breach of rights.

The Slovenian Tourist Board shall not be liable for any use of photos and video recordings that is contrary to these rules. The user of the material shall be entirely responsible for the content and manner of use.

General provisions

These Media Library General Terms and Conditions shall apply for all instances of using the material unless the Slovenian Tourist Board and user agree on special terms of using the material in advance and in writing for a specific instance of using the material.

These General Terms and Conditions shall be subject to occasional amendments. Upon the user’s publication of the material, the version of the General Terms and Conditions that is current at that particular time shall apply for the use of materials. If the user disagrees with the amendments made to these General Terms and Conditions, they shall immediately cease using the material and remove it from all media and other communication channels.

#1 Lake Bled

Lake Bled is probably one of the best places to visit in Slovenia and should not be missed on any trip through the small country. With a size of 2 km x 1.4 km, Lake Bled is relatively manageable and you can easily go around it on foot or by bike, because the total distance is just under 6 km.

The lake offers a truly dreamlike fairy tale scenery like from a Sissi movie and no matter from which side you look at the glacier lake, the panorama is simply magnificent. There are really countless sights at Lake Bled, beautiful hikes and of course the famous (and very tasty) Bled Cream Cake.

However, the place is one of the Slovenia tourism regions. Therefore there are many restaurants, cafes and souvenir stores here. For us, the place was a bit too touristy, so we focused more on the lake, the surrounding hikes and viewpoints.

What is so special about Lake Bled are Bled Island (the only island in Slovenia, by the way) and Bled Castle, perched high on a rock above the lake. Truly one of the most beautiful lakes we have experienced on our travels so far.

Hotel Recommendation at Lake Bled

Penzion Pibernik is a family-run bed & breakfast in a quiet location.

The hotel is located on a large meadow surrounded by a forest above the Sava River, only 300 m from the main road to Lake Bled.

You can reach the lake very quickly on foot. Nevertheless, you are in a quiet environment in the middle of the forest.

Piran is in our opinion one of the most beautiful cities in Slovenia and thus definitely belongs on our list of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Slovenia. The small town on the Adriatic Sea convinces with its medieval old town, great location by the sea, wonderful sunsets and of course by the Venetian architecture. We found Piran beautiful and strolled for hours through the romantic coastal town on the Adriatic Sea. For us, it is the most beautiful city in Slovenia and definitely one of the most beautiful places on the Adriatic.

In our opinion, Piran is definitely worth a visit and the small town should be part of every Slovenia itinerary . The most beautiful part of Piran is (as so often) the old town, which is located at the westernmost tip of the city. The rest of the city, which you will pass through on your journey, can be left out in our opinion.

#3 Postojna Caves

Another natural highlight in Slovenia are the famous Postojna Caves, which belongs to the unique things to do in Slovenia. Unfortunately, we could not visit this cave complex because we were traveling with our dog Aaro and dogs are not allowed there, but you should definitely not miss this sight.

The Postojna Caves are the second largest stalactite caves in the world and have a total length of 24 km, of which you can explore 5 km. Over 3 km of it you will ride an underground train – yes, you heard right, there is a train in the stalactite cave that will take you through the cave. This is truly unique and a wonderful experience.

#4 Soča Valley

The Soca River is one of the most spectacular highlights in the Triglav National Park and therefore also one of the most famous tourist attractions in Slovenia. The 137 km long river accompanies you from the Vrsic Pass in the north to the Tolmin Gorge and beyond.

With its narrow gorges, turquoise water, rapids and suspension bridges, this river is truly the most beautiful natural highlight in Slovenia and should be part of every Slovenia itinerary.

In addition, outdoor sports are very important here. You can do a lot of fun and adventurous things in the Soca Valley, like  white water rafting* or go on a kayak through the river* .

When crossing the Soca Valley, you drive almost all the time on the road 206 along the water and therefore almost always have a view of the wild and often raging river. We couldn’t get enough of the brightly shining color of the river and spent a few days in the Soca Valley.

#5 Ljubljana

The small and charming capital of Slovenia is definitely worth a visit if you are traveling in the beautiful country. As it is often the case with cities, you’ll find Ljubljana’s most beautiful sights centrally located in the old town, which is crisscrossed by the Ljubljanica River. Situated between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, you can stroll through the alleys, discover the waterfront, look at historic buildings or visit the nightlife.

From Piran you can reach the capital of Slovenia in less than 2 hours and experience numerous sights. Ljubljana is almost car-free and is quite manageable in terms of area. This means that you can explore the city relatively well on foot.

The most beautiful sights of Ljubljana are easy to discover in one day and therefore the capital of Slovenia can be a good end to your Slovenia road trip.

#6 Lake Bohinj

Less than an hour away from Lake Bled is Lake Bohinj, yet it seems like another world. Here you meet few other tourists, there are hardly any restaurants and everything is much more natural and pristine.

You can enjoy the nature much more than on lake Bled. Lake Bohinj is beautiful and you can circumnavigate it once via a beautifully landscaped path in just under 2.5 hours.

We think that Lake Bohinj is not as spectacular as Lake Bled with its small island and Bled Castle. Nevertheless, you should pay a visit to Lake Bohinj, because the spectacular Mostnica Gorge  is located nearby.

#7 Pericnik Waterfall

The hike to Pericnik Waterfall is definitely one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Slovenia for us. The path runs totally idyllic through the forest and allows again and again wonderful views of the river and the surrounding mountains until you reach the highlight, the waterfall itself.

If you follow the path further up you come to the foot of the waterfall and now really notice why this waterfall is so special. The path runs directly behind the waterfall .

Everywhere water drips from the rock walls and you walk here like under a huge shower. It is not possible to pass it dry. On the other side of the waterfall the wind blows the spray again really in the face, but that is part of the experience.

There is also a staircase here that will take you a little higher. You should definitely invest the extra 5 minutes for another spectacular view.

#8 Mostnica Gorge

Mostnica Gorge is located very close to the beautiful Bohinj Lake and is a spectacular hike along a special gorge. Even though Mostnica Gorge is not super long, it is extremely beautiful and can be admired very well from the hiking trail that runs parallel to it.

The river runs sometimes totally calm and then again totally wild, for example when it flows through the narrow gorge. At the narrowest point, the gorge is only a few meters wide and allows the water to flow through at very high speed and wildly.

The path through the forest is really extremely beautiful and not always easy to walk. You run over large roots, have to cross small streams and also the one or other moss-covered rocks is there. The forest smells deliciously of coniferous wood and looks super untouched and natural.

#9 Vintgar Gorge

For us, the Vintgar Gorge is clearly the most beautiful gorge at Lake Bled and thus cannot be missing from our list of the best tourist attractions in Slovenia. If you are in the area, then you simply have to stop by here. The hike along the narrow gorge is really spectacular.

Vintgar Gorge is a narrow 1.6 km long gorge washed out by the Radnova River between Hom and Boršt mountains. Here you can walk along the gorge on narrow boardwalks and have spectacular views of the river and the steep rock walls next to you.

The steep rocks are overgrown with greenish shimmering moss and grasses. The gorge is sometimes wider, sometimes narrower. You walk sometimes on the left side and sometimes on the right side of the roaring river. The water is beautifully turquoise, while it flows with a loud roar under you through the gorge.

The Vintgar Gorge is a great natural highlight and should be part of your visit.

#10 Vršič Pass

The Vršič Pass is the highest mountain pass in Slovenia, taking you up and down an incredible 50 hairpin bends to 1611 meters above sea level. A ride over this spectacular alpine pass is a must do on any Slovenia trip, whether you’re traveling by motorcycle, car or campervan.

Built over a hundred years ago, the Alpine pass still fascinates on any road trip through Slovenia. As a relic from the old days, the curves of the serpentines are still laid out with cobblestones. This is very rare in the Alps.

On top of the peak there is a brilliant hike that takes you to the viewpoint Slemenova Spica. The way there is really spectacular and for us the most beautiful hike in all of Slovenia. At the southern end of the mountain pass (actually at hairpin bend 49) you can also see the source of the Soča river.

#11 Jasna Lake

Ranking #11 on our list of the best tourist attractions in Slovenia is Lake Jasna. Jasna Lake, at the foot of the Vrsic Pass, consists of two man-made lakes that blend beautifully into the surrounding natural scenery. The lake is very well developed for tourism, so there is a restaurant, a beach bar and even SUPs (Stand Up Paddle) that you can rent. You can take a nice walk around the two lakes, which takes just under 30 minutes.

#12 Sunik Water Grove

The Sunik water grove is a real insider tip among the tourist attractions in Slovenia. The water grove is located on the Soča River and can be reached on foot from the Great Soča Troughs. The hiking trail follows beautifully through the nature until you come to the first highlight. The first waterfall at Šunik water grove is quite impressive. It is shaped like a big cauldron (or a U) and so the water runs at almost 180 degrees several meters down the moss-covered rocks. It looks really wonderful!

The path then leads you further into the forest. The path alone looks like something out of a fairy tale. You walk over moss-covered rocks, everywhere you see water flowing. The water is really everywhere. It runs out of the rocks, comes out of the earth and forms everywhere small watercourses, waterfalls or ponds.

The landscape is totally mystical and beautiful. The path is well developed and leads you dry feet through the very humid forest. A really special hike in the Triglav National Park.

#13 Kozjak Waterfall

The Kozjac waterfall near the village of Kobarid is really a special tourist attraction in Slovenia. After a short hike you will pass a great viewpoint of the Soca river and after about 30 minutes you will reach this special waterfall.

On the last hundred meters there are several small bridges to cross the water. You can also simply walk through the ankle- to maximum knee-high water, if you wear sandals.

You will then discover the Kozjal waterfall behind a small corner and can marvel at how it runs down a rock wall from a height of about 10 m in a kind of small cave. This is actually the special thing about this waterfall, that you are enclosed almost all around by rocks and can still stand in the middle (almost dry feet) to admire the waterfall.
