Spain Map Regions

There are 19 main Spain tourism boards and hundreds of smaller local tourism boards which represent every corner of this fascinating country

Spain's tourism boards play a vital role in promoting the country's diverse attractions and facilitating tourism experiences for visitors.

These boards are responsible for promoting different regions and cities within Spain, highlighting their unique cultural, historical, and natural assets to attract both domestic and international tourists.

Each region or autonomous community in Spain typically has its own tourism board, focused on showcasing the specific charms and offerings of that area.

For example, there are tourism boards for popular destinations such as Andalusia , Catalonia, the Balearic Islands , and the Canary Islands , among others.

Each region will have its main tourism board, for example, Andalusia has one main tourism board that operates andalucia.org . Each of the main cities and popular tourist destinations within Andalucia will also have its own tourism board that is dedicated to promoting each destination.

These tourism boards run informative and user-friendly websites that provide valuable resources to potential travellers. These websites offer comprehensive guides to local attractions, accommodation options, dining choices, and suggested itineraries.

They also provide updated information on events, festivals , and activities taking place in each region, helping tourists plan their trips more effectively.

Spain tourism boards actively engage in marketing campaigns and partnerships to raise awareness about Spain as a whole.

They collaborate with travel agencies, airlines, and other tourism-related businesses to promote the country's offerings globally.

Their efforts contribute significantly to Spain's tourism industry, which is a significant driver of the country's economy.

The tourism boards' main purpose is to boost the number of visitors and extend their stays, fostering sustainable tourism practices.

They aim to showcase Spain's rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cities while also supporting local businesses and preserving the country's natural and cultural assets for future generations.

Tourism boards in Spain play a critical role in elevating Spain's profile as a top tourist destination worldwide, ensuring that travellers from all corners of the globe have the information and support they need to enjoy unforgettable experiences in this captivating country.

All tourism boards are also responsible for running tourist offices ( Oficinas de Turismo ) which can be found in just about every city, town and village that receives tourists. These offices are usually open from 9 am to 2 pm and are a great place to gather localised information on the area you plan to stay.

There are always plenty of free leaflets on offer and the staff are always only too willing to provide you with any relevant information and assistance you may require.

Museum Night: art in the moonlight

The Barcelona moon bears witness to thousands of magical nights. Málaga

Malaga the Beautiful, as the city is known, stands at the centre of the basin of the same name, between the mountains, the River Guadalhorce and the coastal strip which leads to the Axarquia region.

Throughout Malaga's history, its privileged geographic situation has attracted travellers, merchants, settlers and warriors who have left their mark on what is now a cosmopolitan, universal, open, relaxed and hospitable city.

Its places of interest are far too numerous to mention in detail, but here is a brief summary:

In the east is the suburb of El Palo, with its typical fishermen's houses, coves, promenades and "pescaíto" (small fried fish), which runs into the city's main promenade, the Paseo Maritimo, with its beaches, La Malagueta district, the lighthouse (which has become the symbol of the city) and the port breakwater, which affords a beautiful panoramic view of the city. In the centre, a walk through the Park, home to botanical species from around the world, adapted here thanks to the city's benign climate, takes us to the old centre of Malaga: the imposing Cathedral ; the Nazari Gibralfaro Castle ; La Alcazaba fortress, renovated for public usage; and the Roman Theatre , proof of the city's importance in this era. Further up is the Plaza de la Merced square, site of the house in which the artistic genius Picasso was born. Malaga is also home to a number of interesting churches -St. John's, St. James', St. Domingo's, and the Holy Martyrs-; St. Augustine's Convent and the Episcopal Palace ; and civil buildings such as the Count of Buenavista's Palace and the Consulate House .

A stroll through the city's streets evokes memories of its spectacular Holy Week and grandiose Fair.

To the west and north of modern Malaga, the product of the urban growth experienced in the 1960s, are the Misericordia Beaches, which lead to the mouth of the River Guadalhorce, a protected area visited by thousands of migratory birds.

The outskirts of the city are home to romantic gardens such as La Consula and El Retiro in the suburd of Churriana, and, further north, the Finca de la Concepcion and Hacienda de San Jose country estates, evidence of the economic splendour of Malaga's past.

Overlooking the city are the Malaga Mountains, a Natural Park of extreme beauty and the ideal place from which to enjoy its charms.

In short, a most complete city to which we must add a whole host of tourist facilities, golf courses, water sports and other attractions difficult to evaluate, such as its sunlight, its climate, its cuisine and the wit of its people.

In the 1st century B.C., Estrabon mentions a Phoenician town which stood at the foot of the hill now occupied by the city's fortress, the Alcazaba.

Roman Malaga enjoyed periods of great splendour, as witnessed by its Roman Theatre and other important archaeological remains, as well the statute which declared it a confederate, self-governing city, known as the Lex Flavia Malacitana.

A long period of decadence followed the fall of the Roman Empire. In 571, the city was captured by the Visigoth king Leovigildo.

In 711, Tarik, lieutenant to the governor of the north of Ifriquiya (Africa) Muza ben Nusayr, crossed the straits of Gibraltar (Yebel-Tarik) with almost 10,000 men to begin the conquest of the whole peninsula -a feat which took just five years-, which was achieved more by convincing its inhabitants of the virtues of a new creed and way of life than by using military force. That same year, Malaga was taken by the Moslems, and a new chapter in its history, one which was to span eight centuries, had begun. The area became part of the Nazari kingdom of Granada at the end of the 13th century. During this period, the city flourished, living from the commerce of its agricultural produce -sugar cane, almonds, raisins, figs, saffron and olives, while its silk textiles and fine ceramics also acquired great prestige.

It was during the Moslem occupation that the city walls were built, running from the sea to the Alcazaba fortress, climbing up the left bank of the River Guadalmedina as far as the present-day Calle Alamos street, from where it headed towards Calle Granada, so named because it was here that a gate led out of the city and onto the road from Malaga to Granada; the whole of the walled area was protected by Gibralfaro Castle.

The traveller and geographer Ibn Batuta (1304-1368) wrote of Malaga: "It is one of the most beautiful capital cities in all Al-Andalus. It combines the advantages of inland regions with those of coastal cities. Its figs and almonds, its fine ceramics and gold porcelain are exported to distant locations to the East and to the West".

The 14th century saw the Christians make their first attempts to r

10 ways to see a different side of Spain

Whether you’re hoping to dance flamenco or searching for the perfect paella, the country boasts endless adventures for every traveler.

A woman with a red fan a long red dress

With diverse landscapes and unique cultures from coast to coast, Spain is a sea of endless discovery. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or on a quest to taste the best paella, the country’s beaches, mountains, and urban centers offer something for even the most traveled visitor. Here’s what to add to the top of your Spain to-do list.

Road trip the Cantabrian Coast

A drive along the Cantabrian Sea—through the northern regions of Asturias and Cantabria— reveals some of Spain’s most untouched natural landscapes, where mountains kiss the ocean. Start in Cudillero’s colorful fishing village, making your way east on the Autovía del Cantábrico (A-8) along vertical cliffs to explore Asturias’s remote stone beaches, or relax on the golden sands of Ribadesella. Then it’s on to Cantabria for a jaunt through the charming town of Santillana del Mar, a misty hike just 25 miles inland in the Paciegos Valley, and cliff jumping in Faro del Caballo.

n

Feast at a Basque cider house

The Basques—the people of a small mountainous region on the northeastern coast—have been producing cider for centuries . Yet the cider house feast at the sagardotegi is a fairly recent but important pillar in modern Basque culture.   “More than anything, the sagardotegi is a social gathering for us,” says Iker Bardaji of   Basque Guides . From January through April, locals gather in cozy taverns to taste freshly decanted barrels and eat salt cod omelets and two-pound T-bone steaks. Places like   Petritegi Sagardotegia-Bodega   or   Restaurante Barkaiztegi   near San Sebastián are open all year round, but Bardaji takes visitors to local haunts for the standing-room-only communal experience in cider house season.

Trek the Camino de Santiago

Once a religious pilgrimage, the St. James Way is now a trekking route for avid backpackers and spiritual seekers alike. Nine central trails lead to the towering Baroque cathedral in Santiago, the capital of the northwestern region, Galicia. The most popular route is a roughly 70-mile walk from Sarria through verdant forests and stone villages, but longer routes from Portugal or along the northern coast on the Camino del Norte are not to be ignored. Along the way, pilgrims can revel in Galician hospitality with a smattering of affordable albergues—hostel-like accommodations— and excellent traditional eateries.

n

Explore the world of Gaudí

The Sagrada Familia cathedral and Parc Güell are iconic stops in Barcelona. But for a deeper dive into the world of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, Barcelona guide   Francesc Garcia   recommends some lesser visited masterpieces in the area likec,   Casa Vicens ,   Palau Güell , and   Bellesguard .   “These other projects are examples of designs Gaudí couldn’t explore in the Sagrada Familia.” says Garcia.   “Here he could take more risks.”

n

Boat Mallorca ’ s hidden coves

Part of the Balearics archipelago, the island of Mallorca boasts stunning rock formations, turquoise waters, and unspoiled coves. Parking spots at the most popular coves like Cala Deiá or Cala Formentor can fill up quickly in high season, so boat along the coast for access to the island’s prime secluded beaches and privileged views of the Tramuntana Mountains.   Sóller Charters   offers a number of motor and sailboat rentals for those with boating licenses, as well as full or half-day charter experiences for a leisurely journey around the island.

( Here's everything you should know about visiting Spain .)

n

Tour rare volcanic wineries

Wine country doesn’t end at the peninsula. On Lanzarote, the most western island in the Canary archipelago, lies an arid and treeless landscape where electric vineyards rise up from the volcanic ash like welcomed invaders.   “Perfect adaptation of successive generations of farmers on the island to such a hostile environment has fostered the existence of the most extreme and beautiful vineyards imaginable,” says local winegrower Asencion Robayna. Robayna recommends a tour at   Bermejo , as well as visits to   Bodega Cohombrillo   and   Erupción .

Discover Spain ’ s recent history through art

Picasso painted another side of Spain’s history beyond the conquistadors and royal ages of discovery. He created   Guernica , now housed in the   Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía   in Madrid , for the 1937 Paris Exposition as a form of political protest to broadcast the realities of the Spanish Civil War to the world.   “The painting is a universal depiction of war in black and white,” says Spanish history expert and guide Sean Retana Vallely of   Context Tavel .   “Black and white is the language of journalism and Picasso wanted to fight on equal terms.”

n

Eat authentic paella at its origin

Paella is Spain’s most emblematic dish, but it’s also the most adulterated. To taste the savory grains at their origin, head to the Valencia region, where fresh ingredients from land and sea heighten the local reverence for the culinary craft.   “Rice is the heart of the Valencian community,” says María Luisa Rivera, lauded chef and owner of   La Sastería   restaurant in Alicante.   “It’s emblematic of the area, a reflection of agricultural tradition, and a symbol of celebration.” In the Valencian capital, sample the wood-fired paellas at   Casa Carmela . Food lovers can also follow Rivera’s advice for lunch at   Casa Riquelme   in Alicante or   La Muralla   in Tabarca.

n

Visit the Alhambra palace by night

A symbol of the last days of Moorish reign in Spain, this majestic UNESCO World Heritage site glistens differently in the dark.   “The night tour is simply magical,” says official guide Marta Sánchez Vera, who leads visitors through the Alhambra with   Abaq DMC Spain .   “It’s one of my favorite tours, as the illumination is carefully arranged for it to look like a dream.” For those visiting without a guide, Sánchez recommends booking   tickets   two months in advance.

  Dance flamenco in Seville

You can catch a flamenco show anywhere in Spain. But with its origins in the south, Seville is the place to dive in headfirst. The city’s week-long spring fair, Feria de Abril, is the most vibrant display of flamenco fanfare, while intimate theaters throughout the city, like   Teatro Flamenco Triana   or   Peña Flamenca Torres Macarena host regular performances.   “Flamenco always surprises people; it's an art that expresses intense emotions,” says Eva Izquierdo, who hosts beginner flamenco classes for visitors at her studio   I Show U Sevilla .   “People who take a class later understand what they’re seeing on stage. It’s the best way to fully immerse yourself.”

Be prepared to visit Spain with these 16 things to know before you go

Here's what you need to know to get ready for a trip to Spain © Flashpop / Getty Images

Spain has been home for the past 16 years, ever since I moved to its capital Madrid in my early thirties.

From day one, it was easy to be charmed by this warm and inviting country . It ticks a lot of  boxes in terms of what you’re looking for in a European destination – great cuisine and wine , spectacular landscapes , architectural gems, green spaces and a thriving art scene.

Getting around the country is also very convenient, thanks to Spain's efficient and reliable multi-modal public transport system . And the Spanish people are some of the friendliest locals, who will happily go out of their way to point you in the right direction if you’re lost.

Of course there were still some cultural quirks I had to adjust to – for one, eating times in Spain are very late in comparison with the rest of the world's dining schedules. I still remember my early days in Madrid when my belly would be in outright rebellion while waiting for “early” dinner reservations at 9pm. And forget about making a speedy exit from social gatherings; in Spain saying farewell could take up another hour of your time.

Cultural idiosyncrasies aside, your trip to this incredible country can be your most memorable one yet if you plan well ahead, and follow these useful travel tips.

1. Pack warm clothes. Really.

There is a humorous Spanish expression that goes, “Hasta cuarenta de mayo, no te quites el sayo” , which translates to “Until the 40th of May, don’t remove your coat” – sage advice to keep a jacket handy until mid-June. While Spain may be famous for its blue skies and sun-drenched beaches, it actually has more colder seasons in the year than warm ones, during early spring (March to May), autumn (September to November) and winter (December to February). Regions in northern Spain, such as the Basque Country, Asturias and Galicia, have cooler temperatures compared to the rest of the country.

2. Being cashless is common

Card is king in Spain. The main tourist hubs such as Madrid, Barcelona , San Sebastián and Ibiza are generally credit card-friendly destinations. In fact, you could go cashless for days and pay for your meals, drinks, taxis and bus fares without a problem using a credit or debit card.

If you do bring cash, make sure you have loose change. Several establishments, bus and taxi drivers, especially on morning shifts, usually do not have change for bigger bills. So if you prefer paying cash, it’s a good idea to be stocked up on smaller bills (€5 and €10) and coins.

3. Choose your time to visit Madrid wisely

Think twice about visiting Madrid in August . Most establishments in the Spanish capital close, and Madrileños usually head for the beaches to escape the brutal August heat .

People sit at restaurant tables in a square in the evening

4. Expect to eat late

Prepare for late Spanish dining times. Many tourists who come to Spain for the first time end up hungry while waiting for restaurants to open. Most restaurants open for lunch from 1pm to 4pm, and dinner from 8pm to 1am. A lot of establishments also close on Mondays. You can stave off hunger pangs before mealtimes by snacking on tapas – small savory plates that are usually free with a drink order in many Spanish cities. In San Sebastián or Bilbao in the Basque Country , you can savor pintxos , or bite-sized portions typically served on a slice of bread and skewered with a toothpick.

5. Ordering certain drinks will immediately mark you as a tourist

A popular drink among tourists, sangría is usually served in pitchers meant for sharing, and not by the glass. Instead, try ordering a local favorite that’s similar to sangría, tinto de verano , a concoction of red wine and lemon soda.

Ask for a caña  like a local instead of a cerveza . A caña  is a small glass of beer on tap (about 250ml).

6. Tipping is not expected

European countries in general don’t have a tipping culture. But of course, it is very much appreciated – especially if you enjoyed good service.

7. Don't eat food while you’re on the move

Eating is an age-old pleasure that must be savored unhurriedly, so it’s uncommon to see Spaniards biting sandwiches or munching on fries while walking down the street or riding public transportation.

8. Look for fixed-price lunches

Order the menú del día (daily menu) for lunch on weekdays. Take your cue from the locals and ask for the fixed-price menu (ranging from €8 to €17) that includes a three-course meal with dessert, drinks, bread and coffee.

9. Eat late, stay late

Make time for sobremesa  – lingering long after a meal for a post-dining conversation. This is a hallmark of sociable Spanish culture, to extend conversations well beyond mealtimes to be able to enjoy each other’s company for as long as possible, usually over drinks.

10. Keep an eye on your belongings

Be vigilant of pickpockets and keep your belongings close. Pickpockets are unfortunately rampant in high tourist traffic areas. If you’re sitting at an outdoor table, watch out for vendors that get suspiciously close and distract you with their items for sale, such as flowers or lottery tickets, while they surreptitiously steal your wallet or mobile phone on the table (this is a modus operandi I’ve witnessed more than once!).

11. You can drink tap water in Spain

Go ahead and drink the tap water. Spanish tap water or “agua de grifo” is safe to drink, though the taste varies across regions.

12. There's one number for an emergency

Call 112 for any emergency. You can contact this number for any kind of emergency in Spain, even without a Spanish SIM card on your mobile phone. You’ll be connected to the right emergency service through multilingual operators. To contact the Spanish National Police, dial 091.

A man wearing long shorts and a T-shirt admires the architecture in a mosque

 13. Dress appropriately when away from the beach

Opt for smart casual attire and avoid overly casual outfits like athleisure wear, beachwear, or excessively revealing clothing in the city. If you’re visiting religious sites such as churches, cathedrals or mosques, cover your shoulders and knees to show respect for these places.

14. Brush up on basic Spanish

Like any destination, it helps a lot if you know basic local phrases. While you can get by speaking English in the bigger, more touristy cities, it is a different story when visiting smaller, lesser-known towns outside the tourist radar.

Don't say “no problemo”, which is incorrect. The correct phrase is “no hay problema” or more colloquially, say “no pasa nada” .

15. Know what is considered polite

Greet people, even strangers. It’s commonplace to greet people in elevators, shops and along hallways. Compliment good service by saying “muy amable” . Meaning “very kind”, this is a commonly used polite phrase to express gratitude for someone’s helpfulness. It can be said in different situations – if a person has gone out of their way to assist you, like giving you directions, holding a door or giving up their seat for you. You can also say this to show your appreciation for customer service that goes above and beyond.

16. Don’t leave a social gathering without saying goodbye

It is generally frowned upon to leave an occasion without letting your host know. However, be prepared for a long, drawn out goodbye – the Spanish are highly sociable people who like extending conversations, leading to lengthy, and often multiple stages of farewells.

Cruises get a bit of a bad rep. A “human lasagna,” a particularly judgemental writer once described them, where layers of often older travelers (or “cruisers”) live on top of each other for days, weeks and sometimes even months on end, with the aim of ticking off bucket list destinations with minimal effort. It was then, given this reputation, a stroke of genius by the powers that be at The Ritz-Carlton to not describe their cruise line — as it undeniably is — as a cruise line.

Instead, in October 2022, we were introduced to The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . A polished, refined and, most importantly, boutique take on cruising, where travelers can enjoy that famous Ritz-Carlton service, at sea — a floating hotel from one of the most respected hospitality brands on the planet, if you will. Its first ship was the 623-ft, 149-cabin Evrima , which was delivered three years late but to plenty of fanfare. She lived up to The Ritz-Carlton’s sky-high promises: cabins were roomy, service was personalized and excursions were immersive.

Now, just shy of two years later, Evrima ’s little sister has hit the water, embarking on her inaugural pre-official-launch journey in late August from Barcelona to Monte-Carlo . In true Ritz-Carlton style, she set sail with a bang, with an opening night DJ set from Sam Feldt, cocktail bar pop-up from Paradiso in Barcelona (a mainstay on the World’s 50 Best Bars list), free-flowing Moet & Chandon, and a bunch of intrigued first-in guests on board. Ilma hath arrived.

Ilma is a touch larger than her older sister at 790 ft and with 224 suites. Every accommodation is a suite — no poky cabins here, thank you — and even the entry-level option comes with a balcony big enough for dining space and a sun lounger. The Ritz-Carlton by no means pushes the boat out (no pun intended) when it comes to interior design, but that’s not meant as criticism — the decor is minimal but warm, muted but cozy.

There are plenty of little extra touches: polish off one packet of your favorite treats in the all-inclusive snack cupboard and three more will have arrived by the time you look again. Poured the last drop of your welcome champagne last night? Another bottle will be chilling pronto. I even came back to my room each evening to a display of gifts that would make Santa blush, from Diptyque perfume to a Bulgari AirPods case.

If you’re looking for a showstopper, though, go for the Owner’s Suite. Covering 1,033 sq ft (with an extra 721 sq ft outside), it has a separate dining area and lounge, a kitchenette, a walk-in wardrobe and its own outdoor hot tub. No half measures.

This is Ritz-Carlton-on-Sea, so service is the real marker of luxury on Ilma. The guest-to-staff ratio is proudly 1:1.2 (among the highest ratio in the industry, so I’m told) and you feel it at every stage — from the dedicated suite ambassadors on hand to cater to every whim to the bar team who very helpfully whizz around the pool areas, trays of cocktails that you didn’t know you wanted until you saw them in hand. By the time you disembark, expect plenty of the team to know you by name — as well as, crucially, your drinks order. Most things are included in your fare too, so you won’t feel that niggling dread of the bill ticking up as you go.

But, so far, so cruise. Pick a line luxurious enough, and the above will come as standard. The real place where traditional cruising reveals its flaws, however, is in the on-shore excursions, with locals in many ports notoriously fed up with hordes descending en masse. No such worry for Ilma guests, though. During our two-night call at St Tropez, I, along with a small (by cruise standards) group of fellow guests headed to land for an afternoon at the Domaine La Rouillère vineyard.

mistral bar on ilma yacht

Worries set in when I saw our host waving a clipboard above her head, indicating that the group should follow her to a nearby mini-bus. The worries disappeared when we arrived, though. The vineyard and its thankfully air-conned winery were ours for the afternoon; a tour turned into a tasting of its delightfully crisp Provence rosé . Small groups like this not only keep the locals happy but also mean you make quick friends — a few sips in and we were all sharing stories of champagne-fueled festivities the night before.

If even this type of excursion is a bit too close to organized fun for you, fear not. Regular tenders run to shore when the ship is at anchor so you can explore as you please (many of my fellow rosé sippers stayed in town for dinner, post wine) and the concierge team can set up fully private custom excursions if you like — there’s even the option to stay overnight and rejoin at the next port of call.

ilma cruise marina

Personally, though, I would recommend as many nights on board as possible as one place where Ritz-Carlton has really leaned into the cruising experience is in its food and drink program. There are five restaurants — including lavish multi-course fine dining at Seta su Ilma by chef Fabio Trabocchi (of Washington DC’s Michelin-starred Fiola), light Mediterranean bites at poolside The Beach House by Michael Mina, and sharing-style Pan-Asian dishes at Memorī — and no less than seven bars, as well as 24-hour in-suite dining. You’d be hard-pressed to enjoy such an embarrassment of riches on even the biggest of private yachts.

For our final night on board Ilma , someone at The Ritz-Carlton surely paid off the weather gods — a sunset as beautiful as I’d ever seen gracefully waved us away from the swanky shores of St Tropez. After a night of sailing, Ilma ’s first journey came to an end in Monaco; I opened my curtains to a view of the sunrise casting a pink glow over Monte-Carlo’s gleaming Port Hercules harbor.

After dropping us off in the billionaire’s playground, the ship was snaking her way down to Rome for her first proper outing (read: not filled with notebook-wielding journalists). From there, she’s off around the Med — Santorini, Valletta and Taomorina beckon — before she heads over the Atlantic to prove to the Caribbean that not all cruises are created equal.
