Why a mini cruise?

A mini-cruise is ideal if you are not yet sure whether a longer cruise is right for you or if you have a new cruise line in mind and want to experience some of the things it has to offer. Starting at the harbour you then sail (usually at night) towards the destination. During the day you stop at interesting ports in between and have enough time there for sightseeing, shopping or culinary delights.

Although these trips are much shorter, usually about 3 or 4 days, than on a normal trip, you still have all the amenities such as restaurants, bars, entertainment programs, sports activities and much more available. So you get to know the cruise line on a short cruise and know immediately if it suits you. With minimal effort you can appreciate what cruising has to offer.

Mini And Sampler Cruises – All You Need To Know

Mini cruises or cruises under seven days offer a chance to test the waters at a cost-effective price. Three- or four-day escapes provide a long weekend getaway without cashing in your vacation time. But are these sampler cruises worth it? And where do they sail?

Obviously, short cruises can’t sail as far as longer seven-day itineraries. However, they’re perfect for a celebratory event. So, whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or engagement, consider booking a mini cruise to create enduring memories.

Short itineraries aren’t offered everywhere in the world. So, if you’ve never cruised before, a short cruise allows you to sample life on a cruise ship. During your cruise, you can tour the ship, stay in a stateroom and see what’s available on board.

What’s A Mini Cruise?

Sampler cruises are typically two to four days, although a few are available for just a one-nighter. Short cruises are sometimes the result of ships repositioning from one area to another.

Consequently, these cruises aren’t scheduled frequently. These shorter itineraries are suited to those who live near the cruise port. After all, no one wants to pay for an expensive flight to take a one, two, or three-day cruise.

Because of the pandemic, some short cruises sail to nowhere or just around the harbor and back. While you won’t have the opportunity to visit an unforeseen port, you can still enjoy a break from everyday life. I have taken a 5-day Pacific Northwest cruise in a balcony stateroom for USD 149.

Sampler cruises are perfect for families on a budget. If you can’t afford that 7-day itinerary in the Caribbean, a shorter vacation comes at a more affordable price. Also, cruise vacations include kids’ clubs and babysitting so that parents can enjoy some free time.

One of the advantages of shorter cruises is less planning. You don’t need to research every port of call, but there’s usually only one or two ports. So, if you’re game for a short getaway, here are some sampler cruises worth considering.

One Day Cruises

While many might not consider a one-day cruise, it’s a chance to experience the amenities of a cruise ship. You’ll have restaurant choices, entertainment, swimming pools, saunas, and much more. One-day itineraries usually require passengers to embark at one port and disembark at another.

Cruise passengers can sometimes find these cruises between Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle, Washington. As ships jockey for Alaska season, they sometimes switch their departure port by moving from one port to another.

For under USD 100, you can enjoy a night on a cruise ship for less than a hotel stay. Bear in mind, that your cruise also includes food and entertainment. So, it’s a fantastic deal!

Additionally, you can select a Mediterranean one-day cruise, which sails from Athens to Kusadasi. With only one night onboard, past passengers may want to try out a suite or more expensive stateroom. It’s a chance to savor the luxury at a price you can afford.

Two Night Mini Cruises

For one extra night, cruisers can sail to one port and back again. Although, some two-day cruises sail to nowhere. Currently, Singapore and Hong Kong offer two-day cruises to nowhere.

The following sampler cruises include a full day in a port except for Europe. Europe cruises sail from Hamburg to Southampton or vice versa. CocoCay or other cruise lines’ private islands are excellent choices for children. Also, with plenty of amenities on board, there’s no time for boredom.

Long-time cruisers sometimes use these mini cruises to attain loyal points faster. Some cruise lines give points on the number of cruises sailed instead of the number of days cruised.

For instance, passengers sailing with Princess can attain Platinum after six cruises. If you only booked 3-day cruises, you would gain Platinum status (third level) in 18 days.

Alternatively, Celebrity cruise passengers need to sail 100 days in a balcony stateroom to attain Elite status (third level).

Long-time cruisers use a shorter cruise to experience a ship-within-a-ship suite . With a short itinerary, that suite you couldn’t normally afford becomes cost-effective.

Three Night Mini Cruises

Three-day cruises are perfect for that long weekend, providing the cruise falls on the correct days. Cruises that start at one port and end at another usually come with rock bottom pricing. However, if you prefer to return to the same embarkation port, there are many choices.

When you consider that the first and last days are embarkation and debarkation, three-day cruises are more desirable. A three-day itinerary could include two ports if the ports are close together.

I took a three day cruise on the Crown Princess ship , cruising solo from Seattle to Vancouver. By cruising solo in a double occupancy cabin, I gained double loyalty points.

Also, I enjoyed a sunny day in the Victoria, BC, cruise port.

The shorter vacation is ideal for those who practice minimalist packing and don’t want the headache of planning. I’ve done a few short cruises out of Vancouver and boarded with just a carry-on luggage from Level8.

Four Day Getaway Cruises

Four-day cruises give an excellent snippet of an area without the commitment of a 7-day itinerary. However, the prices vary greatly. I have seen 4-day cruises advertised as low as USD 120 in a balcony stateroom. Others sell for over USD 800, depending on the itinerary, cruise line, and cruise ship.

When shopping for a short cruise, lines like Disney, Hurtigruten, and Silversea command higher prices. Also, expect to pay more during peak times such as Christmas, New Year, and summer months.

Five Day Mini Cruises

For me, a five-day cruise is a sweet spot. It’s not so short that you feel like you haven’t been anywhere. And it’s not a full seven-day sail. Most 5-day itineraries are roundtrip cruises, returning to the same port. Most cruise passengers prefer a roundtrip itinerary. Should you live within driving distance of the port, there is no need for an airline ticket.

The following are some return 5-day cruises offered by Norwegian, Hurtigruten, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Silversea, Carnival, Disney, Azamara, Cunard, and Celebrity Cruises.

Alternatively, these one-way cruises sail from one port and debark in another. Remember to factor in the cost of an airline ticket when selecting one of these cruises.

The Pros and Cons Of Sampler Cruises            

If you’re looking to sail a mini cruise, there are some things to consider.

Pros Of A Short Itinerary

• They are suited to those who live close to the embarkation port. Without an airline ticket purchase, passengers can take a short escape for bargain pricing.
• Cruises under six days come with low prices. However, if want a longer itinerary, consider booking back-to-back mini-cruises.
• It’s a great way to “test the waters” if you’re new to cruising.
• Without the commitment of a longer itinerary, you can enjoy a shorter cruise on a long weekend.
• It’s a great way to try a different cruise line.
• Suites and higher-level staterooms are more affordable.
• You can pack light.
• They are great for racking up cruise line loyalty points.

Cons Of A Shorter Cruise

• Some itineraries cruise to nowhere. Although, if you love sea days, you may consider this a plus.
• Cruise ships can’t travel too far from the embarkation port.
• Weekend cruises can attract a “party” crowd, so your escape may not be a quiet one.
• The selection of itineraries is limited.
• Cruise lines don’t usually offer shortened itineraries on their newest or grandest ships.
• You might not have a formal or “chic” night. Some may consider this a pro, though.
• You may require a visa to some countries.
• You may not feel like you’ve had a vacation.
• If you don’t live near the embarkation port, the cost of the airline ticket can exceed the savings of the cruise.

Which Mini Cruises Are Preferable?

When reviewing shortened itineraries, you may select a cruise based on price and where you live. However, you might want to avoid some cruises for the following reasons.

Pacific Coastal cruises are popular for those who live in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, many first-time cruises choose one as a way to test out a cruise vacation.

However, the Pacific Coastal cruises often experience rough water, causing seasickness. Avoid a cruise up and down the Pacific Coast if you can’t handle the choppy seas.

Unless you hold a Chinese passport, you may want to pass on a cruise that stops in China. Chinese visas cost USD 140 per person, which may turn your inexpensive cruise into a costly one.

Alaska cruises that sail for less than five days don’t generally visit a fjord or glacier. If the purpose of your Alaska itinerary is to see ice, choose a 7-day itinerary instead.

If you have children, you might choose a private island itinerary due to its amenities. With waterslides, pools, and endless sun-drenched activities, you’ll never run out of things to do. It’s like a Disneyland vacation cruise-style.

Australian itineraries are perfect for locals because it allows for a break without needing a visa. Equally as enticing are the Mexico cruises if you live near an embarkation port. In winter, you can escape to warmer waters on a long weekend.

Final Thoughts

All things considered, mini cruises aren’t for everyone. While I’m willing to take shorter itineraries, I live near the Vancouver cruise terminal , which doesn’t offer many of these shorter cruises. However, if I lived in Florida, I’d welcome these bargain getaways whenever I could travel.

EVERYTHING We Know About Halloween Horror Nights 2024 at Universal Orlando

If you ask us, it’s NEVER too early to talk about all things spooky-ooky.

As you might already know, Halloween begins in August in the theme park world, and that’s only a few months away. So, we’re gearing up to hear all sorts of Halloween news as well as prepare ourselves for some haunts. One thing we’re particularly excited about is Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando .

We’re here to tell you ALL you need to know about this scary event. Put on your bravest face, and let’s go!

What is Halloween Horror Nights?

Universal Studios has been the headquarters for all things terrifying and downright spooky since Halloween Horror Nights started in 1991. After the park closes for regular guests, it is a special ticketed event that transforms into a park filled with nightmares and terrors to scare and delight from Wednesday-Sunday starting at 6:30PM until 2AM. A word of warning: Halloween Horror Nights is an intense event not suitable for all ages.

Dates and Tickets

Experience the ultimate scarefest at Universal Orlando Resort with Halloween Horror Nights, happening on select nights from August through November. In 2024, the spooktacular event begins on August 30th and continues thrilling guests until November 3rd, marking its earliest start and the longest season ever! With frights awaiting every Wednesday through Sunday, including Halloween night itself, brace yourself for an unforgettable journey into the macabre. As Halloween approaches, expect the crowds to intensify, adding to the eerie atmosphere of this frightfully fantastic event!

You can choose between four different ticket types, so let’s take a look at what each of them has to offer!

First, you can snag the  Halloween Horror Nights Single-Night Ticket!  This ticket allows you to select one night to attend the event and all it has to offer. These start at  $82.99  per person.

Next, you can purchase the  Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass.  This is an add-on to the single-night ticket that allows you to skip the regular lines  once  at all of the haunted houses, and other participating rides and attractions. Prices start at  $129.99 . Remember, you need to purchase your single-night admission separately!

Do you want a look behind the scenes? Well, the  Halloween Horror Nights R.I.P. Tour add-on may be for you. This add-on comes with a guided walking tour of the event so that you can get a more intimate look at the event, and it can be a super unique experience! It is pricey, though — starting at $359.99 . You will need to purchase your single-night ticket to utilize this add-on.

If you want to see what the haunted houses are like during the day with the lights on, then the  Halloween Horror Nights Behind-the-Screams: Unmasking the Horror Tour  might be for you. This ticket will give you the opportunity to see what things are like during the day before everyone comes out to play at night. You do not need a valid park admission to take part in this tour. You can choose between a 3-hour and 6-hour tour with this ticket. These start at  $99.99.

For those craving more thrills than just one night can offer, Universal Orlando typically offers multi-night tickets. However, it’s essential to note that in 2023, all multi-night tickets eventually sold out. These multi-night tickets come with various perks, granting access to different nights of the event:

• The Rush of Fear Pass: Provides entry to the first 18 event nights.
• The Frequent Fear Pass: Access to every Sunday through Thursday, plus the first weekend.
• The Frequent Fear Plus Pass: Includes entry every Sunday through Friday, plus the first and last Saturday.
• The Ultimate Frequent Fear Pass: Grants access to EVERY night of the event, along with complimentary regular parking after 5 p.m. on all event nights.

Houses and Scare Zones

While the houses for  Halloween Horror Nights have not been confirmed, we can assume that we will see new houses this year. No matter the theme, this after-hours event normally has 10 haunted houses and five scare zones spread throughout the park.

Last year’s houses were Universal Monsters: Unmasked, Stranger Things 4, Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings, Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Origins, Yeti: Campground Kills, Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate, The Last of Us, The Exorcist: Believer, Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count.

There have been rumors that a house based on Five Nights at Freddy’s will be joining the line-up of houses this year, as the movie was released last fall. This is all speculation and not confirmed. What we do know is that this year’s  Halloween Horror Night s  will feature 10 new houses.

Scare Zones will also be returning this year. Think of these as haunted houses that are not contained inside. Instead, the Scare Zones are themed and feature TONS of characters walking around. It’s really fun if you love thrills.

Just like any special ticketed event,  Halloween Horror Nights  has food offerings that are only available during the event. Some of the food is based on the current year’s houses.

For example, last year, you could grab a bite to eat at Surfer Boy Pizza , based on the fictional pizza shop in Stranger Things 4. You could try the famous Surfer Boy Hawaiian Pizza or even the cheese and vegan options.

Themed around the Last of Us, last year you could try the Left Behind Ravioli, which fits into the story of having to leave their lives behind in the Last of Us. This dish was mini cheese ravioli with marinara, truffle cream, garlic bread, and tempura fried enoki mushrooms and was served in a food ration tin can.

While menus for  Halloween Horror Nights  usually drop in August, it is safe to assume that the food offerings will change based on which houses will be part of the 2024 season. We are looking forward to this year’s themed eats!

Merchandise and Souvenirs

We are suckers for merchandise at theme parks, especially when it is for an after-hours event like Halloween Horror Nights.

We got a sneak peek at some of the merchandise that will be sold at this year’s  Halloween Horror Nights . The first collection is called  “Where Horror Lives.”  We saw the bright orange shirt for this collection, which features the phrase “Where Horror Lives.” There is also a black hat and tumbler with the same logo.

There may also be themed merchandise based around the houses. Last year, the Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate shirt was extremely popular. Last year’s Stranger Things 4 merchandise featured T-shirts, mugs, and even a drawstring bag with Vecna on it.

Once the houses for 2024 are announced, we will start to get a better idea of what merchandise is offered.

SPECULATION: Will Halloween Horror Nights come to Epic Universe?

While no one can definitely say whether Halloween Horror Night will be coming to Epic Universe – though we do have some educated guesses to share below –  there’s no doubt that the new park would have the PERFECT land for it: Dark Universe.

Arguably one of the most anticipated of Epic Universe’s “portals”, Dark Universe is going to give die-hard Universal fans something they’ve been craving for decades: A fully immersive land dedicated to the Universal Monsters like Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man.

Dark Universe is said to include Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, a massive dark ride that will include encounters with “Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and a new character named Dr. Victoria Frankenstein” according to Universal. In addition, the land is also set to feature a second attraction, Curse of the Werewolf, a spinning family coaster, as well as heavily themed shopping and dining. Most notably, The Burning Blade Tavern, a highly anticipated dining location whose name is reminiscent of a famous scene from Universal’s version of Frankenstein.

Everything about Dark Universe makes it seem like the perfect location for Universal to go all out with Halloween decor and seasonal additions all focused on the classic stable of monster characters, and we do believe that’s likely to happen. However, back to our aforementioned educated guess, it seems unlikely that Halloween Horror Nights will come over to Epic Universe in full.

Universal Orlando Announces Sizzling Summer Additions

Universal Orlando today announced new entertainment experiences, like a new parade and nighttime lagoon show, a new Harry Potter projection show, and the opening date for DreamWorks Land.

DreamWorks Land – Opens June 14, 2024

Play with your favorite DreamWorks characters in themed mini-lands at DreamWorks Land in Universal Studios Florida, opening June 14, 2024. Splash with Shrek in an interactive water playground, train with Po at the interactive Po Live! show, board the caterpillar bus on the Trollercoaster, and dance with your favorite friends at the DreamWorks Imagination Celebration show. All this play can make a kid hungry, thankfully Universal added two new snack stands to the land – one in Shrek offering food fit for an ogre (or human) and an ice cream stand themed to a giant boombox near the Trollercoaster.

CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular

Taking place on select nights on the Universal Studios Florida lagoon, CinceSenational is a new lagoon show starring iconic film scores using fireworks, lights, fountains, projections, and 600 glowing drones. Yes, CineSational is the first Orlando theme park to use drones in a nighttime show.

Set to a brand new orchestral soundtrack, this show highlights the incredible music and moments from iconic movies like Harry Potter, Jurassic World, Jaws, Shrek, Ghostbusters, Trolls, Back to the Future, Universal Monsters, Transformers, How to Train Your Dragon, E.T., Fast and Furious, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minions, The Mummy, and King Kong.

CineSentation starts performances on June 14, 2024.

Hogwarts Always

Relive a year of magic and friendship at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with a brand new nighttime show – Hogwarts Always. Taking place on select nights in Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure, the show uses fireworks and projection mapping on Hogwarts castle that brings the school to life. There will be four unique endings to the show, each highlighting a separate Hogwarts house, so make sure to see it multiple times to see all the endings.

Hogwarts Always begins performances on June 14, 2024.

Universal’s Mega Movie Parade

Debuting July 3, 2024, the new Universal Mega Movie Parade is a brand new daytime parade featuring the biggest movies: E.T., Jurassic Park, Trolls, Ghostbusters, Minions, and more. Guests should expect to see the iconic Ecto-1 in the parade as it chased a 16-foot Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, a full marching band to celebrate July 4th at Amity Beach, and even an epic ending featuring dinosaurs.

Happy Mother’s Day! This lovely occasion is coming up on May 12, and I’ve got your list of all the decadent delights coming to Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort . Once you see these bites and sips, you’ll be counting down the days until you can try them yourself.  

Whether you’re enjoying your time with your mother, aunt, grandmother, caregiver, mother figure, or any special person in your life, Disney Parks has something for you to indulge in. Try a new dish that will brighten your day like the Sunflower Cake from The Mara or treat yourself to a sweet selection with the return of the Bouquet of Roses Cupcake from Good’s Food to Go and The Artist’s Palette . For those heading over to the Disneyland Resort on May 12, Storytellers Cafe has a special Mother’s Day Dinner Buffet filled with flavors, fun, and even some Disney Characters, and one at Plaza Inn within Disneyland park .
