Créé en 1978 par Bernard Decré, le Tour Voile, anciennement « Tour de France à la Voile », est une épreuve nautique annuelle incontournable ! Au fil de 43 précédentes éditions, marins amateurs et chevronnés ont sillonné le littoral français sur huit supports différents.

En 2023, le Tour Voile revennait en Figaro Bénéteau 3, dans le cadre de l’Académie Figaro Bénéteau, chargée d’accompagner les nouveaux talents de la course au large.

La Fédération Française de Voile et la Classe Figaro Bénéteau ont confié l’organisation du Tour Voile à Ultim Sailing.

Tour De France à La Voile

Welcome to the Tour de France à la voile! 

The annual yachting race around the French coast was inaugurated in 1978 and since it has reunited skippers from all over the world to compete from the English Channel to the French Riviera. Some famous skippers have taken part in the competition, like Loïck Peyron or four time America's Cup winner Russell Coutts. Despite attracting renown sailors, amateurs and students can also partake in the Tour de France à la voile. 

Visiting 10 harbours along the French coast, it includes coastal stages and intensive open sea regattas. Half way through, boats are transported inland to move from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.

Season 2015

For its 38th edition, the Tour de France à la Voile has undergone a revolution. Out with the monohulls and in with the trimarans! Also, no more sailing from one venue to another, instead races will be shorter, more intense and spectacular, so the crowd will be closer to the action.

Who Knew There Was a Tour de France for Boats? The Tour de France à la Voile 2017

“Since 1978, thousands of sailors have discovered the French coast, got pushed back by the Channel currents, asked their position to Brittany’s fishermen and heeled under the Mistral wind. From a joyful racing-cruising event, the Tour de France à la Voile turned into a great offshore sailing school for many young and talented sailors, and then a high-level competition with great champions taking part.”  -Tour de France à la Voile

Starting in Dunkerque on the north shore of France on July 7, with 9 stages along the coastline of France, the 40 th Tour de France à la Voile 2017 ended in Nice on July 29, 2017. I was lucky enough to catch the last three days of the race by chance. A longtime fan of the Tour de France for bicycles, I was surprised to learn about the sailboat race and its long history. Where have I been all my life?

This race is not only about skillful sailors, though, but also about the boats. Each year a different boat is featured; this year, it was the Diam 24, “a beautifully built, impressively simple trimaran designed by multihull masters VPLP and built in Port La Foret, France.” With a top speed of 26 knots, they fly through the water.

Thirty-one boats and crews started the race in Dunkerque, finishing the race in Nice. Most of the stages took place on the north and west coasts of France, with one segment on the southern coast of Spain. Each stage was approximately 74 kilometers (40 nautical miles) and lasted about three hours. Along the way, as with the Tour de France, awards were given for various accomplishments, i.e. the Finnegaz Award for Combativeness, which went to Michel Desjoyeaux for “team spirit, performance and technical expertise.”

The champions of this year’s race were the crew of the colourful orange and blue “Des Pieds & Des Mains,” a twist on the French expression, faire des pieds et des mains – literally ‘do something with the feet and the hands,’ i.e. put all your effort into it.

It was sponsored by Fondation FDJ, and skippered by Damien Iehl and Paralympic Gold medalist, Damien Seguin, so the name makes perfect sense. The FDJ Foundation is a French group, which supports, among other things, the inclusion of persons with disabilities at all levels of sports. “ Persons with disabilities are sportsmen like the others. The FDJ® Corporate Foundation has defended this belief since its inception.”

Winning skipper, Damien Seguin, missing his left hand, embodies the FDJ mission.

“Twelve years after his gold medal in Athens, eight years after the silver in Beijing, Damien Seguin definitively entered the Legend of Sailing on September 17 at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, winning his second gold medal!”

Nice Matin , the daily Nice newspaper, interviewed Frédérique Quentin, spokesman for FDJ at the race in Nice:

NM: What was the objective to have a handicapped team in this race?

FQ : It is truly to help make a change to the way people regard the handicapped. It is a project started three years ago…our initial objective was to simply place in the top 5. To go past that and win the final victory was completely unexpected.

For me, it was a wonderful surprise to be in Nice, and to realize this beautiful race was unfolding before me as I lay on the beach at the  Opéra  Plage watching the colourful sails racing past. At the end of each day’s race, the boats and crews were lined up along the Promenade des Anglais, shining wet hulls, and color-coded crew members posing for photos and popping champagne.

What better place for the grand finale of this beautiful race than the sparkling blue shoreline of the Côte d’Azur . Following on the coat tails of the Bastille Day commemoration, the Nice Jazz Festival and the Ironman competition, it is just one more of the incredible events happening in the summer months in this exciting corner of France.

While bicycle racing has the Tour de France which highlights its scenic countryside, the nation also has a history of something similar with sailing.

Since its first edition in the summer of 1978, the Tour Voile has been a magnificent racing pilgrimage around and along the phenomenal and varied French coastline. The true growth of offshore sailing in France can in part be put down to this unique itinerant event which has introduced and nurtured literally thousands of people to the sport of offshore racing.

However, the racing-format of the past few years tried stadium-style racing with the Diam 24 OD trimarans, but that chapter has been closed and the event owners – Amaury Sports Organisation (A.S.O.) – along with the French Sailing Federation (FFV), have rejuvenated the format by incorporating a two-week long competition period in July for the next three years.

In 2023, the Tour Voile returns to its offshore roots with the Figaro Beneteau 3 and an iconic multidisciplinary course around France.

The Figaro Beneteau 3, conceived for shorthanded offshore racing and in particular the legendary singlehanded Solitaire du Figaro race, the 32 foot, powerful and modern, foil-assisted one design class will be used for the next three editions of the Tour Voile.

The new format will have an emphasis on young people, with at least half of the four person crew being under 26 years of age when the event starts each year. There also shall be at least one women among the crew.

Teams also have the ability to change crew members as often as they choose throughout the event, enabling experienced sailors to transmit and share their skills with newcomers and developing sailors.

The Tour Voile racing format will include inshore racing, coastal racing, and overnight offshore racing. Teams should expect to line-up on the start line on at least 20 occasions as they tackle the competition and progress from port to port. Starting in St Quay Portrieux on the North Brittany coast on July 1, the regatta will finish further south on the Atlantic seaboard a fortnight later.

The goal with this rejuvenated format is to bring a new generation of French and international sailors to discover offshore and coastal racing and enjoy the camaraderie and community associated with this 2 week itinerant event.

This is not another first time event requiring new boats and an untried, untested format. This event aims to be an intelligent and cost-effective regatta making the most of an existing fleet and regatta circuit, sharing event organizers and mutualizing logistics and technical support.

How the Tour Voile moved to Figaro Beneteau 3

During the Paris boat show, the French Sailing Federation and the Figaro Beneteau class  have announced  that the  Tour Voile will be back in 2023, in Figaro 3,  with a shorter format than historically, one that will include the Tour de Bretagne . Tip & Shaft  tells you more about this latest guise.

A little less than a year after the withdrawal of Normandie Evénéments ( see our article ), which organized only one edition, in 2021, the Tour Voile will be  back next July on a new class, the Figaro Beneteau 3 . The announcement was made official during the prize giving ceremony of the France Elite offshore racing championship by the president of the Figaro Beneteau class,  Jean-Bernard Le Boucher , and that of the French Sailing Federation,  Jean-Luc Denéchau .

“There was a real desire within the Federation to deliver a competition that could  train young people in offshore racing , explains  Denéchau . “ We worked with the Figaro class on a project with two key words: training and financial accessibility .”  Hence the choice of the Figaro 3 – the agreement with the class covers three years – and is so far preferred, for example, to the future  Sun Fast 30 One Design  (ex Class30), which its promoters, including the UNCL, would have seen as the class for the Tour in the medium term.

“We live in a world that has changed economically,”  continues the president of the FFV. “ So in the end we wanted to  use existing boats , I don’t want our clubs to have to make significant investments out of their reach to train their young people in offshore racing.” 

The president of the UNCL, now joined with the Yacht Club de France, Géry Trenteseaux are not taking umbrage:  “I met Jean-Luc Denéchau and Corinne Migraine (vice-president )  at the beginning of September about this and they were clear, so there is no disappointment. And  anyway, our one design would not be available  in sufficient quantities in 2023.”

After agreeing with the Figaro class, the FFVoile approached Amaury Sport Organisation, owner of the Tour Voile since 2012, which gave up organizing it at the end of 2020, to take on the license. What ASO accepted,  granting the Tour Voile brand to the federation for a period of three years  on the model of a kind of lease-management, as already previously used with Normandie Evénements.

Three organizers solicited

This new formula Tour will therefore be contested during the first fortnight of July with a crew of four – including two young people under 26 years old and one woman, who will be able to alternate on the different stages – and  in two parts.  The first will take  the route of the Tour de Bretagne à la voile , which will run two separate classifications, before, according to Jean-Luc Denéchau  “one big stage between Quiberon and a city located further south.”

Organizer of the Tour de Bretagne, the Brittany sailing league, will be in charge of the first part of the Tour Voile.  A private provider will take care of the second part .  “We launched a targeted consultation with three organizers,”  confirms Jean-Bernard Le Boucher. According to our information, these are  Upswing Prod , which organizes the Ocean Fifty Pro Sailing Tour,  Ultim Sailing , which ran in May the new race in the Figaro, the Trophée Banque Populaire Grand Ouest, and  Aloha Attitude , a Brest company specializing in events and project management (including that of Eric Péron).

When asked, these organizers acknowledged they are looking at it.  “We have not yet studied it in all its components”,  simply replied Julien Mauriat for Upswing Prod;  “We find the subject fascinating”,  commented Emmanuel Bachellerie for Ultim Sailing, while Christophe Boutet, founder of Aloha Attitude, added :  “ The project is interesting, but the roadmap is  not easy to keep, because the event arrives quickly and it is partly based on an already existing event, it will not necessarily be easy to find its place, But we are studying the file.”

A dozen crews are hoped

The lucky winner will be known  “in the coming weeks”,  according to Jean-Bernard Le Boucher, then instructs all the protagonists to attract the maximum number of crews . “For this first, we  are counting on a dozen entries , we want in particular to help the leagues to take an interest,”  explains Jean-Luc Denéchau who evokes a budget, to participate in the Tour Voile, of  “ 15,000 to 20,000 euros “.

Speaking to  Tip & Shaft , Cédric Chateau, sporting director  of the Normandy league , very involved for years in the training of young crews, is interested, even if he believes that the budget will probably be higher.  “ We   would like to set up one or two teams , it will depend on the means we manage to find. As the goal will not only be to participate, but to progress, I think it will require a little training upstream, so coaching. I have more the impression that we will be on a budget of the order of 40,000 to 50,000 euros. But the  Tour Voile brand is an asset  to find private partners.”

Jean-Bernard Le Boucher says  “It is a very interesting model economically, which allows to start in Figaro without having enormous means”.  And can allow the class, which has included the Tour Voile  on the calendar  of its Academy, launched in 2022, to  attract new sailors , in a context of stagnation in the number of registered for its races.  “I think the right way to reinvigorate the class and have more participants in three to four years time on our big solo and doubles events is to go and get young people and get them racing.”

A record-equalling 40 teams are preparing to do battle in the 25th Tour de France à la Voile which starts tomorrow…

The Tour de France à la Voile 2002 is about to start. The 40 Mumm 30s are lining up in the marina of Dunkerque-Dunes de Flandres. The measurements have been done over the last few days. The crews are now sorting out the last details in order to be ready for Friday’s prologue.

The prologue is a non point-scoring race that gives a chance to the crews to tune up and meet the other competitors. The first two point scoring inshore races will take place in the waters of Dunkerque-Dunes de Flandres on Saturday. Most of them are eager to start this four weeks regatta.

Once again, the level of competition of this one-design event mixing inshore and offshore racing promises to be high and we should see some tight and fierce racing.

One of the unique features of the Tour de France à la Voile is to see professionals, amateurs and students lining up on the same start line and racing against each other.

With 40 entries, the 25th Tour de France à la Voile equals its 1988 record. Among the many French entries are a few foreign teams. There are two British teams, a professional one, Panther Team GBR skippered by Rob Greenhalgh and an amateur team, Royal Thames, skippered by Owen Modral.

Both British skippers are looking forward to starting racing. “We’re pleased to be here. It’s an exciting event. I’m very impressed with the set up. I hope things will go right. We’re eager to start as we’ve been sitting around ashore for a few days and it’s getting tedious”, comments Rob Greenhalgh. Panther Team GBR hopes to finish in the top five.

In order to train they’ve participated in the European and the French national Mumm 30s championship. “We know it’s going to be difficult as this event is very competitive. At the French national the fleet was very strong, far more than the British fleet. This is probably equal or even more competitive that the European and World championship”, adds Panther Team GBR skipper.

Royal Thames is also ready to start racing. “We’re well on course. The boat is in the water. The sails have been measured. We’re ready to start”, says Modral who sailed two weeks last year onboard Simon Shaw’s British University and is happy to be back. “It’s an excellent event. It’s the best boat to sail in such an event both in terms of racing and having a good time”.

Royal Thames expectations are to try and win the amateur division and finish in the top ten. “We’d like to produce what we did last year. We’ve learned a lot form last year and we hope to improve through the Tour. We’re quite realistic and know it won’t be easy. We can be good on our day but we might not have consistency. We don’t know how strong the fleet is this year, but we have an idea”, adds Modral.

For offshore races, Royal Thames will have the precious help of good navigators such as Larry Rosenfield. “France is a very offshore sailing nation. We’re learning so much about how to prepare and sail the boat offshore. We have got a fair idea of how to approach the 70 to 100-mile legs but we’ll be learning as we go on the very long ones”.

There are also some international teams such as Vincent Portugal’s Cassis-Maugio Carnon with Italian Mumm 30 World Champion Vasco Vascotto and Aussie Nick Moloney who is part of Ellen MacArthur’s Offshore Sailing Team.

There is a team comprised of Aussies and Brits competing in the student division. Force EDC is skippered by Australia’s Simon Sutherland. The two Swiss teams are back. Etienne David’s Ville de Genève Carrefour Prevention competing in the overall division and Lorenz Müller’s Bienne Voile in the amateur division.

The Belgians are also back onboard T Service Interim Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest. These foreign teams will have to face serious French contenders such as Mart Hiercelin onboard Kenzo, Pierre-Loïc Berthet’s Nantes-St-Nazaire and Jimmy Pahun’s Région Ile de France with Isabelle Autissier and Pascal Bidégrry, winner of the single handed race Solitaire du Figaro in 2000. “I have a nice team. They read extremely well. I hope they will do well. I tried to have a team of “Figaristes” (Firgaro sailors). Erwan Tabarly will be joining us in Dieppe. I wanted to have people who know how to sail and stand well on long offshore legs as this year’s course will be pretty tiring”, comments Jimmy Pahun.

Once again, member of the France’s Olympic sailing team are participating such as 470 world champion Gildas Philippe, skippering Dieppe Seine Maritime, or 49ner sailors like Dimitri Deruelle onboard Marseille and Julien Farnarier and Marc Audineau onboard Ville d’Antibes-NEC.

L'AS Saint-Étienne (Ligue 2) a annoncé vendredi avoir perdu son partenaire majeur Smart Good Things (SGT) qui n'honorait pas ses engagements de partenariat signé pour trois ans en juin 2022 et l'avoir remplacé par une société locale, Kelyps intérim. Une des filiales de SGT, Smart Good Bevtech, a été placée en redressement judiciaire fin février pour une période d'observation de six mois, selon un communiqué d'information aux actionnaires de la holding créée par l'homme d'affaires Serge Bueno et dont la star du basket Tony Parker est directeur général délégué depuis sa prise de participation en avril 2022.

La SGT précisait dans ce communiqué «qu'aucune autre entité du groupe n'est concernée par cette procédure» . «Nous avons reçu en début de semaine un courrier de l'administrateur judiciaire de Smart Good Bevtech annonçant que notre partenaire majeur, qui n'avait pas honoré ses engagements financiers au-delà de février, ne pouvait pas aller au bout de son contrat de trois ans qui court jusqu'à la fin de la saison 2024-2025» , a indiqué vendredi à l'AFP la direction de l'ASSE. Ces engagements financiers n'étaient plus honorés «depuis février» , selon l'ASSE.

Le montant total des trois années de contrat de sponsoring souscrit par SGT avoisinait deux millions d'euros, selon une source informée, un montant que n'a pas confirmé le club troisième au classement du championnat de France en Ligue 2 . Les Verts porteront leur nouveau maillot dès samedi, lors du match à guichets fermés comptant pour la 31e journée contre l'équipe de Concarneau, selon l'ASSE. Fondé en 2018, Kelyps intérim revendique plus de 2.000 intérimaires placés chaque mois à travers son réseau de 15 agences spécialisées.

L'Equipe de France féminine a lancé sa campagne de qualification à l'Euro 2025 par un court succès contre les Irlandaises (1-0), vendredi soir au stade à Metz. Face à un adversaire largement à sa portée, la sélection de Hervé Renard a assuré l'essentiel dès la 6e minute grâce à Marie-Antoinette Katoto, et est tombée dans un faux rythme. Il faudra hausser le ton mardi en Suède.

Equipe de France: Wendie Renard victime d'un petit malaise lors de France-Irlande

C'est une petite frayeur que Wendie Renard aurait sans doute préféré éviter. Dans le temps additionnel de la rencontre entre la France et l'Irlande, remportée par les Bleues vendredi soir à Metz (1-0) , la capitaine française a été victime d'un malaise. Elle s'est écroulée sur la pelouse alors qu'elle n'avait pas subi de choc avec une adversaire.

Le staff de l'équipe de France l'a tout de suite pris en charge et Renard a expliqué voir flou. Victime en fait d'une hypoglycémie, la Française a quitté la pelouse aidée par deux membres du staff médical. Mais après quelques secondes de récupération, la défenseuse, qui était entrée en jeu à la 77e minute, a repris sa place sur le terrain. Après le coup de sifflet final, elle a même tenu un petit discours à ses coéquipières.

"Elle a fait un petit malaise mais là ça allait dans le vestiaire, elle était bien, a expliqué sa coéquipière Sandie Toletti après la rencontre. Sur le moment (ça nous a inquiété), en plus on n'avait pas vu ce qu'il s'était passé, mais après elle nous a dit que c'était juste un petit malaise, c'est rassurant."

La capitaine des Bleues, qui fait son retour progressivement après une opération à un quadriceps au mois de décembre, devrait pouvoir tenir son rang lors du prochain match, mardi face à la Suède, même si le sélectionneur Hervé Renard a voulu rester prudent. "Je ne peux pas vous dire exactement (si elle démarrera à Göteborg), on doit prendre en considération l'état des lieux après match", a-t-il reconnu.
