TCFIA 2023 – le bestof du tour

Les vœux 2024 du tcfia.

Les membres bénévoles du Vélo Club Vallée du Rhône Ardéchoise (VCVRA), leur Comité Directeur et son Président Louis JEANNIN repartent, grâce à vous, à vos exceptionnels collaborations et soutiens, à tenter de réaliser la 22ème édition du Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l’Ardèche 2024 (TCFIA 2024).

2024 est synonyme de grande année sportive en France avec les Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de Paris du 26 juillet au 8 septembre qui vont, non pas nous gêner pour la mise en place de l’organisation mais nous handicaper pour assurer la sécurité de l’épreuve avec des Forces de l’Ordre qui seront mobilisées au niveau national.

Nous poursuivons notre objectif originel de sortir de l’ombre les thématiques santé, environnementales et humaines en mettant en lumière tout à la fois le défi de ces femmes engagées sur les routes de nos départements et le défi de tant de femmes confrontées au quotidien à la maladie, au handicap et aux violences sexistes et sexuelles.

Mais nous poursuivons aussi, jusqu’à l’obsession, la nécessité de la sécurité de tous les secteurs de l’organisation parce que la route n’est pas un terrain de jeu c’est avant tout un « terrain d’expression sportive » véritable lien social qui, par la télévision va chez les gens et qui, au bord des routes, donne beaucoup de sourires aux spectateurs.

Résumé étape 7 – 11 Sept. 2023 BEAUCHASTEL > PRIVAS

Départ à 13h30 du barrage de la CNR à Beauchastel, pour cette dernière étape. Le départ réel est donné à 13h33. Départ nerveux et allure rapide.

Peloton groupé au passage du 1er RUSH après 11 km de course. C’est la mexicaine BARRERA ESPARZA Anet (94) de l’équipe DNA qui passe en tête devant la néerlandaise ADEGEEST Loes (12) de l’équipe FDJ et la japonaise YONAMINE Eri (24) de l’équipe Human.

Résumé étape 6 – 10 Sept. 2023 SAINT-FÉLICIEN > TAIN L’HERMITAGE

Départ réel à 13h02 sous un beau soleil et une température déjà élevée. Grande descente à négocier à 80 km/h. Allure rapide. Beaucoup de lâchées dans ce début de course. 

Au 1 er GPM de 2 ème catégorie, c’est l’italienne Erica MAGNALDI (21) de l’équipe UAE qui remporte le sprint devant la hollandaise Loes ADEGEEST (12) de la FDJ, de la canadienne Olivia BARIL (22) de l’équipe UAE et la leader Marta CAVALLI (13). Après 17,2 km, le premier RUSH est remporté par l’italienne Silvia ZANARDI (61) de BEPINK suivie des coureures de l’équipe UAE, la jeune irlandaise Lara GILLESPIE (24) et BARIL (22).

Résumé étape 5 – 9 Sept. 2023 MARVEJOLS > LE MONT LOZÈRE

Le départ est donné à 13h00 sous le soleil à une T° de 28°C.

La prime est remportée par la Canadienne BARIL Olivia (22) de l’équipe UAE après 1 tour de ville suivie de la jeune Irlandaise GILLESPIE Lara (24) de la même équipe et l’Italienne ZANARDI Silvia (61) de l’équipe Bepink.

Le 1er RUSH après 7,5 km de course est remporté par l’irlandaise (24) suivie des italiennes VETTORELLO Giorgia (63) et (61). Début de course rapide et nerveux. Au deuxième RUSH, c’est à nouveau la jeune irlandaise (24) qui devance l’italienne (61) et la canadienne (22) …

Résumé étape 4 – 8 Sept. 2023 SAINT-RAMBERT-D’ALBON > HAUTERIVES

Départ donné à 13h sous un beau soleil et départ réel donné à 13h06.

Entame rapide avant le 1er rush qui est remporté par l’italienne Giorgia VETTORELLO (63) de l’équipe Bepink, devant la slovaque Nora JENCUSOVA (62) et l’italienne Andrea CASAGRANDA (65) toutes de l’équipe Bepink.

Au passage de la prime au Km 9,7, c’est la néerlandaise Loes ADEGEEST (12) de l’équipe FDJ qui la remporte, suivie de la française Jade WIEL (14) de FDJ et de l’irlandaise Lara GILLESPIE (24) de l’équipe UAE …

Résumé étape 3 – 7 Sept. 2023 AVIGNON > AVIGNON

Départ fictif pour un tour de ville à 13h15 et le départ réel est donné à 13h34.

Dès le début de l’étape, quelques attaques se produisent, l’allure est rapide mais le peloton reste groupé.

Au 1 er rush après 17km de course, c’est la néerlandaise Danique BRAAM (81) de l’équipe Duolar qui sprinte pour prendre la 1 ère place devant l’irlandaise Lara GILLESPIE (24) de l’équipe UAE et de l’italienne Silvia ZANARDI (61) de l’équipe Bepink …

Résumé étape 2 – 6 Sept. 2023 NÎMES > NÎMES

Départ donné à 13h31 sous le soleil. Allure lente à l’entrée du camp des garrigues.

Au 1 er GPM, c’est la leader de la montagne Maëlle GROSSETETE (15) de la FDJ qui passe en tête devant la canadienne Olivia BARIL (22) de UAE Team et l’irlandaise Megan ARMITAGE (112) de l’équipe ARKEA.

L’accélération a provoqué des cassures dans le peloton qui est coupé en deux. Un groupe de 33 concurrentes compte environ 1’15 d’avance au km 25 …

Résumé étape 1 – 5 Sept. 2023 BOURG-SAINT-ANDÉOL > RUOMS

Départ à 12h45 et départ réel à 12h53

Un départ en douceur pour cette première étape, c’est la mise en jambes d’une course de 7 étapes. Au km 7 , une première attaque est vite stoppée. Après 20 kms de course, au 1 er rush, c’est l’irlandaise n°24, Lara Gillespie de l’équipe UAE ADQ qui passe en tête devant l’italienne Silvia ZANARDI (61) et la néo-zélandaisse DRUMMOND Michaela (161) de l’équipe FARTO-BTC.

Présentation du Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l’Ardèche 2023 sur France 2 lors du Tour de France

Le TCFIA est un événement sportif majeur qui rassemble chaque année des cyclistes de renommée internationale. Pour que cet événement se déroule dans les meilleures conditions, une équipe de bénévoles est nécessaire. Si vous souhaitez participer en tant que bénévole à ce tour, veuillez renseigner la fiche bénévole .

Le mot du Président du TCFIA

Certes le Tourmalet inscrira le Tour de France Femmes 2023 dans l’Histoire, mais le « Géant de Provence », le Mont Ventoux, avait déjà inscrit la 3ème étape du TCFIA 2016 dans l’Histoire du cyclisme féminin. La vainqueure, Anna KIESENHOFER, devient même, par la suite, championne olympique le 5 octobre 2021 au Japon. Nous avons pu atteindre notre objectif : arriver à la 20 ème édition. 2022 l’a réalisé avec brio. Nous avons eu la chance d’assister et de participer à une très belle édition empreinte de cordialité entre tous les compartiments de l’organisation, un peloton féminin décidé à en découdre sur les sept étapes de la plus belle manière : à la pédale, les filles ne s’en sont pas privées, nous offrant de merveilleuses parties de manivelles dans ces décors somptueux des paysages d’AURA, OCCITANIE et PACA… Lire plus

Le Pont d'Arc

Thousands of years and erosion by river Ardeche were necessary for water to dig the rock an create this monumental natural arch of 60 metres high with an opening of nearly 30 metres. The natural gateway into the Gorges of Ardeche it was listed as a Grand Site de France in1982. While natural arches are not rare in France and in the world, Pont d'Arc is the largest and one of the very few to actually remain over an active river. It is located about 5 km from the village of Vallon-Pont d'Arc. Massif of Dent de Rez: it is a remarkable site in the south of Ardeche listed among the natural riches of the department because of its geological structure and its wildlife, especially birds. It is possible to walk to the top of this modestly elevated summit, visible from afar thanks to its characteristic figure. Nature Reserve of Gorges de l'Ardeche : remarkable by the quality of their landscapes, the variety of their natural, historical and prehistoric heritage, the gorges of Ardeche and their plateaux attract numerous tourists looking for discovery, escapism and natural activities. The site, with Pont d'Arc and the massif of Dent de Rez, has been listed as a Nature Reserve since 1980.

Tour de l’Ardeche 2022 route announcement

The TCFIA has announced the route for its 20th edition of the Tour de l’Ardeche today with at least one summit finish on Mont Lozère. The route will be 7 stages, over 7 days and takes place between 6th to 12th September 2022. With the race taking place just 6 days before the World Championships in Australia, it’s a good chance for any riders needing a late tune-up before Worlds. Alternatively, for those not making the trip, it’s a great late-season race! The race traditionally isn’t short of climbing and before the Tour de France Femmes returned this year, it was the premier French stage-race in the women’s cycling calendar.

There’s still no mention in the announcement of live coverage which is unfortunate. In an era where so many women’s races are now live to some degree, the Tour de l’Ardeche sort of takes place in a vacuum. It’s a tough race to follow with little to no information shared whilst racing is taking place. Hopefully, in its 20th year, the Tour de l’Ardeche will be able to showcase its awesome racing.

The 2021 edition was won by Leah Thomas who just beat Mavi Garcia and Ane Santesteban by 9 seconds. With a result that foreshadowed her awesome 2022 season, Pauliena Rooijakkers was 4th, only 26 seconds behind. The final podium after the last stage saw possibly the best podium celebration in women’s cycling history. When the cult song Links Rechts by Snollebollekes started playing, Lucinda Brand kicked off with the dance moves and everyone else joined in too.

There’s no pattern for the stages’ finishing times, with every single one of them ending with a different schedule. The only matches are the opening two and the last two stages, finishing around 5pm CEST; the other ones will end earlier. It’s better to just check the times on the schedules listed at every stage down below.

There’s NO bonus seconds available in this race.

The Movistar Team won the 2021 edition of this race with Leah Thomas, who claimed a solo victory on stage two and went on to defend her advantage all the way until stage seven.

It’s  races like the Tour de l’Ardèche in France, so modest, kept alive by the support from ‘bénevoles’ who earn no money with it , which have led women’s cycling to the point it’s now reached with Grand Tours and big classics dominating the scene. That’s the spirit which remains the core of one of the most mountainous races in the UCI calendar, one that in recent years -most notably this 2022- has flattened its route quite a bit, its short stages now opening room for all kinds of riders.

The last event before the World Championships already features a hilly finish on stage one, with slopes around 3-4% in Villeneuve de Berg (Tuesday 6th). Following three group sprint chances in Montélimar -Wednesday 7th; watch out for the La Lartaiguille (Cat-3) ascent with 27km to go-, Pernes les Fontaines (Thursday 8th) and Sarras (Friday 9th), the race will start defining its GC outcome on Saturdya 10th, with the finish up the Mont Lozère (5km at 6%) after the ascent of Le Goulet (7km at 5%).

The biggest climb of the race, however, will arguably be crested on the final day: the Col de Benas (Cat.1), 7.5km at 5%, will be overcome just 13km from the finish in Privas (Monday 12th) , and looks like the really pivotal moment of the race. Before that, sprinters will have a last chance in Alès on Sunday 11th.

Le Tour de France de retour en Ardèche en 2021 !

L’an dernier, le Tour de France était en Ardèche pour deux étapes début septembre. Si Privas et le Teil ont vibré aux couleurs de la Grande Boucle, cette année, ce sont les Gorges de l’Ardèche qui accueilleront les coureurs !

Le parcours du Tour de France 2021 a été révélé par Christian Prudhomme. Et bonne nouvelle pour notre territoire, les coureurs vont (encore) sillonner les routes ardéchoises cette année ! En effet, la douzième étape, disputée le 8 juillet 2021, passera par les Gorges de l’Ardèche et Vallon-Pont-d’Arc au départ de Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux et pour une arrivée à Nîmes. Tour de France 2020. Etape 5 et 6 : L’Ardèche sous toutes ses coutures

Avec une arrivée à Privas et un départ du Teil, l’Ardèche est l’un des départements qui bénéficie de la plus forte exposition de ce Tour 2020. C’est mérité tant il donne une place majeure au vélo qui permet de prendre le temps de profiter de son cadre naturel et ses infrastructures touristiques.

C’est à Privas, en Ardèche, que les coureurs du Tour de France ont franchi la ligne d’arrivée de l’étape du jour. Au programme touristique , Rochemaure et son château du XIIe siècle,  Saint-Marin-sur-Lavezon et le château de Pampelonne puis Chomérac, village qui s’est développé sur un éperon rocheux dans les méandres de la Vérone avec une position dominante sur la vallée de la Payre.

Le lendemain, départ au Teil qui accueille le Tour pour la première fois de son histoire. Ensuite, c’est pas moins de 60 km dans l’Ardèche avec Alba-la-Romaine, labellisé « village de caractère », Villeneuve-de-Berg, veille bastide royale, Vogüé et son fort médiéval réaménagé au XVIIe siècle,  Pradons et ses falaises, Ruoms et sa plage au bord de l’Ardèche, Sampzon dominé par son château Berrias et Casteljau, hameaux séparés par les Gorges du Chassezac, le principal affluent de l’Ardèche. Et, enfin,  Saint-Paul-le-Jeune où se trouve l’une des grottes les plus spectaculaires de France, la Cocalière. Et bienvenue dans le Gard !

L’Ardèche, une véritable destination « vélo »

Avec le premier événement cyclo en Europe qui regroupe plus de 15 000 participants, avec la ViaRhôna qui rejoint le réseau Eurovélo (n°17) en 2016 et près de 400 km d’itinéraires aménagés dans toute l’Ardèche, le département est devenu une véritable destination vélo , « voire la première destination en France ».

Le tracé ardéchois, s’étend sur 93 km répartis en quatre tronçons en alternance avec la Drôme : de Sarras à Glun au milieu des vergers et des vignobles, de Soyons à La Voulte-sur-Rhône avec une entrée possible vers la Dolce Via, de Le Pouzin à Rochemaure, architectures romane, médiévale ou très contemporaine et de Viviers à Bourg-St-Andéol, au fil du Pays d’Art et d’Histoire. On découvre des villages de caractère comme Beauchastel ou des ouvrages d’art exceptionnels comme les deux passerelles himalayennes créées pour la ViaRhôna à Rochemaure ou à Baix.

La Grande Traversée de l’Ardèche VTT

Avec 5 569 m de dénivelée positive et 4 000 m de dénivelée négative, la Grande Traversée de l’Ardèche VTT s’annonce sportive. Cette itinérance, de plus de 315 km et jalonnée d’une quarantaine d’hébergements labellisée « Accueil Vélo » relie Annonay à Bourg Saint-Andéol en passant par les Vans. Cette dorsale nord-sud toute en relief emprunte en grande majorité les GR7 et GR4 depuis les contreforts du Pilat au nord, plus au centre la montagne ardéchoise et les célèbres Mont Mézenc et Gerbier de Jonc, s’ensuit une plongée au coeur des Cévennes pour enfin finir autour des gorges de l’Ardèche. À noter qu’au départ de Saint-Félicien, une variante transversale de 50 km permet de rejoindre l’itinéraire principal. Bon plan : la halte fraîcheur au Lac de Devesset, hébergement, baignade, voile au milieu des sapins.

La Dolce Via, douceur de vivre sur deux roues

Pas besoin d’être un grand sportif pour arpenter la Dolce Via et apprécier la culture en terrasses, les anciennes filatures, les châtaigneraies et la rivière Eyrieux. Tout en douceur (1% de dénivelé), cette ancienne voie ferrée a été réhabilitée en parcours accessible aux piétons, VTT, VAE, VTC et offre jusqu’à 93 km à tous ceux qui souhaitent pédaler en toute tranquillité. Connectée à la ViaRhôna depuis La Voulte sur Rhône, on aura le choix de rejoindre Lamastre et son train touristique à vapeur pour redescendre sur Tournon sur Rhône ou filer jusqu’à St Agrève pour rejoindre le Velay Express, autre train touristique.

A voir à Privas

L’Hôtel de Ville D’inspiration art déco, il a été construit entre 1936 et 1952. Curieusement, son beffroi d’une hauteur de 41 mètres est caractéristique du nord de la France. Il se visite lors des Journées Européennes du Patrimoine et offre une vue à 360° sur tout le bassin privadois. Les Trois Croix du Montoulon Au-dessus de la ville, le site du Montoulon fut le théâtre de l’ultime combat qui opposa en 1629 les gardes suisses de Louis XIII aux derniers huguenots privadois, réfugiés dans le fort qui le couronnait alors. Ce curieux cône volcanique domine Privas. C’est là que le père Chiron y a fait dresser en 1840 trois grandes croix de bois. Altérées par les intempéries, elles ont été réédifiées à l’identique. La pietà du sculpteur Carlo Sarrabezolles a été sculptée sur place et plaquée contre le rocher, en 1957. Tour Diane de Poitiers La Tour Diane de Poitiers fut construite au XVe siècle par la puissante famille des comtes de Poitiers, ducs de Valentinois et barons de Privas. De pur style Renaissance, elle est constituée d’un escalier à vis qui desservait des appartements qui, au cours des siècles, furent les demeures des administrateurs de la baronnie de Privas. A découvrir sur la place de la République. Pont Louis XIII Construit au XIIe siècle, il se situe sur une voie de communication très importante, reliant Baix sur le Rhône à la Montagne ardéchoise. Il est très endommagé par les combats du siège de Privas en 1629 et le roi Louis XIII l’a fait réparer non par générosité, mais avec le dessein d’améliorer toutes les routes menant à Privas ; cela bien sûr, afin de permettre le passage de ses troupes en cas de nouvelles révoltes. Parc des récollets Derrière l’église des Récollets cet ancien jardin de curé offre aux curieux quiétude et sérénité. En 1599, Jacques de Chambaud, capitaine huguenot, rachète au petit-fils de Diane de Poitiers la baronnie de Privas. Sur les ruines d’un fortin du XIe siècle il fait édifier un château. Achevé en 1620, mais au cœur d’une rivalité passionnelle entre catholiques et protestants, « la guerre des amoureux », il a été entièrement détruit par les Privadois en 1621. Après le siège de Privas, les Récollets s’installent en 1644. À la révolution, il devient le siège du tribunal révolutionnaire puis un ordre religieux y installe un collège de garçons qui devient laïque et ensuite mixte. Actuellement, il est le siège du conservatoire de Privas.

Église romane Saint-Etienne de Mélas Construite au IXe siècle, cette église discrète et superbe est l’une des plus anciennes églises romanes de France et possède un baptistère antérieur au IXe siècle, même si ses origines sont mystérieuses. Sa construction octogonale est très originale, de même que sa coupole élégante. Elle fut classée monument historique dès 1868. Selon la tradition, vers 550, une pieuse dame du nom de Frédégonde fit construire un monastère de femmes à Mélas, dédié à saint Étienne et saint Saturnin ; bien qu’aucune trace n’ait subsisté, on peut émettre l’hypothèse de sa destruction et d’une reconstruction au même emplacement. Musée départemental de la résistance et de la déportation en Ardèche Il retrace cette période de l’histoire grâce à de nombreux documents d’archives et des photographies historiques. Depuis 1992, le musée recueille une importante collection permanente grâce à de nombreuses donations de particuliers, anciens résistants ou déportés et d’associations régionales. Ayant officiellement rouvert ses portes depuis le 2 mai 2011, le musée ne cesse de se développer et de mettre en place les outils nécessaires à sa reconnaissance et à son expansion à travers différents évènements : expositions temporaires, conférences, projections, ateliers pour enfants… Rue Kléber Elle est un formidable témoignage de l’époque de prospérité et de richesse du Teil, liée à son activité de port fluvial et de dépôt royal de sel. On peut encore y voir de nombreux hôtels particuliers et de vieux immeubles.

Une étape, des restaurants

A chaque étape Thefork (Tripadvisor) sélectionne des restaurants. A Privas, direction le Vieux Arceaux , une adresse qui bénéficie du label “fait maison”. De quoi profiter du restaurant et de sa cuisine généreuse au sein d’une authentique bâtisse du 18e siècle. Au Teil, c’est Le jardin de Tienou : Amandine Serra et Johann Tarello sont les gérants de ce cet établissement au sein d’un prieuré du XIIe siècle également doté d’une terrasse privée et ombragée.

De Tour de France

Tour de france cycliste, saint-paul-trois-châteaux / nîmes jeudi 8 juillet 2021.

Le Tour de France revient dans le Sud-Ardèche le jeudi 8 juillet prochain avec l’étape Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux / Nîmes (12ème étape – 161km dont 60 km en Ardèche).

Après un périple au long des féériques gorges de l’Ardèche, pour la première fois remontées dans leur intégralité par le Tour, cette étape devrait conduire à un sprint massif à Nîmes, comme en 2019, au bout d’un final identique. Méfiance cependant : la route sera à découvert juste avant Uzès et le vent pourrait y provoquer bordures et cassures.

Exploring the Gorges de l'Ardèche: A Driving Tour

Dramatic gorges, chalky white cliffs, and prehistoric caves define the landscape of wild and beautiful Gorges de l'Ardèche nature reserve (an area that encompasses over 1,500 hectares). The Ardèche River winds its way around the gorges, which were formed from a limestone plateau by the water's geological force over millions of years.

In some places, the waters are gentle enough for swimming; in other places, the river is ideal for white-water rafting. Other things to do in the area include canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and scenic walks. The Gorges de l'Ardèche is a paradise for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and camping enthusiasts. It's also popular with French families for summer vacations.

The following driving itinerary is designed for a full-day excursion, with stops at the most important nature sites and cultural attractions. The circular route covers about 85 kilometers, and the complete journey requires at least two hours of driving time (not including stops). Travelers will have a chance to see diverse aspects of the Ardèche countryside, from peaceful river banks to exhilarating viewpoints and fascinating caves.

Begin the driving tour in Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche, at the southernmost edge of the Gorges de l'Ardèche. A small community of about 1,000 residents, Saint-Martin d'Ardèche is an old fishing village on the Rhône River with opportunities for swimming and canoeing nearby.

The historic village has many cafés with outdoor terraces. Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche is surrounded by wild scrubland and the vine-covered hills of the Côtes du Rhône. This area is popular for hiking, fishing, camping, and family vacations from spring until November.

Continue to the Grand Site de l'Aven d'Orgnac, one of the most extraordinary prehistoric caves in France, which are open to the public. Visitors may take a one-hour guided tour of La Grotte (a prehistoric cave), descending into a magical subterranean world of stalagmites and stalactites. The cave is well illuminated and equipped with railed staircases.

As a complement to the caves, the Cité de la Préhistoire museum offers a glimpse of human life more than 350,000 years ago, through fascinating exhibits, including sound experiences, visual displays, and interactive features. This prehistory collection offers surprising cultural discoveries.

The site also organizes spelunking expeditions accompanied by expert guides. This exciting underground experience gives visitors a sense of what it was like for explorer Robert de Joly, who rappelled into the cave's natural entrance on August 19, 1935.

The Grand Site de l'Aven d'Orgnac is 17 kilometers west of Saint-Martin d'Ardeche. The guided tour goes 120 meters underground.

Tips for Visitors: Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing (the cave has a constant chilly temperature of 11 degrees Celsius). For spelunking, wear comfortable, long-sleeved clothes and sneakers or cross-training shoes.

About 15 kilometers north of Grand Site de l'Aven d'Orgnac is the region's most spectacular nature formation, the Pont d'Arc, a natural bridge over the Ardèche River.

To arrive here from Orgnac l'Aven, follow the D317, which later becomes the D176 west. In a few kilometers, there is a viewpoint on the right with rewarding panoramas. In Barjac, turn north and cross the Ardèche River. On the far side of the bridge, turn right and follow the sign "Route Touristique des Gorges de l'Ardèche."

The road (D290) follows the course of the river for the most part. At first, it winds through rock galleries, and there are some little grottoes along the way to Pont d'Arc. Arriving at this site is a splendid moment. Spend time admiring the view.

The Pont d'Arc is a large, naturally formed bridge of rock that arches over the expansive Ardèche River. The arch reaches 34 meters above the water level and spans a breadth of 60 meters. The sandy stretches on the river banks are popular spots for swimmers, boaters, and kayakers.

About a 15-minute drive from the Pont d'Arc, the Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche is one of the best places to visit in France for a glimpse into the fascinating world of our prehistoric ancestors. The Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche is a replica of the oldest decorated prehistoric cave in France, the Grotte Chauvet-Pont d'Arc (which is now closed to the public due to its fragility).

An exact reproduction of the prehistoric cave, the Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche depicts astonishing cave paintings, drawings, and engravings of bears, bison, lions, mammoths, and horses, exquisitely rendered in an expressive, artistic fashion. It is difficult to fathom that the original images were created 36,000 years ago.

Well designed to welcome tourists, the Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche offers one-hour guided tours of the replica cave. In addition to the cave, there is a gallery of exhibits, the Galerie de l'Aurignacien which presents entertaining and interactive educational content about the culture, known as Aurignacian, of the people who lived in this area 43,000 to 35,000 years ago.

The site also has a restaurant, La Terrasse , which is open for lunch, snacks, and refreshments throughout the day. A boutique sells books and postcards, as well as jewelry and decorative items that are copies of pieces worn by prehistoric people.

About 15 kilometers from the Grotte Chauvet 2 Ardèche are the Caves of Aven Marzal in Saint-Remèze. The caves were discovered by French speleologist Edouard Martel in 1892.

Filled with stalactites and stalagmites, the Aven Marzal caves include the " Salle du Tombeau, " with dimensions comparable to Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, and the " Salle des Diamants , " featuring calcite crystals that shine like diamonds under a spotlight.

Admission to the caves includes a 50-minute guided tour with commentary about the geology. Visitors descend 380 steps and take 361 steps to go back up. Tip : Wear warm clothing; the caves have a constant chilly temperature of 13 degrees Celsius.

Visitors can learn more about the caves at the site's Musée du Monde Souterrain ( Museum of the Underground World ), which displays the ladders, boats, and apparatus originally used to explore the caves. Also on display are archaeological objects discovered here, including dinosaur eggs and bones of saber-toothed tigers.

The Aven Marzal site also delights kids with its Zoo Préhistorique , a two-hectare forest that contains life-size models of prehistoric insects, animals, and dinosaurs. The Prehistoric Zoo also has a playground and games, snack bar, and a boutique that sells adorable stuffed-animal dinosaurs.

Continue on the winding roads about seven kilometers south from Saint-Remèze to the Grotte de la Madeleine. The Madeleine Cave is found in the heart of the lush Ardèche Canyon about 20 meters from the Ardèche River.

Discovered by a shepherd in 1887, this 500-meter-long dripstone cave is a marvelous sight to behold. Upon entering the cave, visitors are awed by thousands of dazzling stalactites, stalagmites, and other natural formations.

The cave's largest chamber is another astounding aspect of this site. At 50 meters high by 30 meters long, it's the size of a large cathedral.

Visitors can take a guided tour and learn about the cave's formation over millions of years, first by subterranean rivers and then by erosion from dripping rainwater. The visit includes a one-hour guided tour with " Son et Lumière " ("Sound and Light") show.

Nearby is the Belvédère de la Madeleine viewpoint with sensational panoramas of the landscape.

On the circular tour through the Gorges de l'Ardèche, after Grotte de la Madeleine, the stretch of the D290 road beyond the D590 road winds around, following the river. This section is known as the "Haute Corniche" and is especially picturesque.

The best viewpoints are Belvédère de la Cathédrale (a view of the Cirque de la Madeleine); Balcon des Templiers, and Belvédère de la Maladrerie (a magnificent view of the huge bend of the Ardèche); Grand Belvédère at the end of the gorge; Belvédère du Colombier; and Belvédère du Ranc-Pointu , above the last bend of the river overlooking the Rhône Valley.

Travel Tips : Along this route, some of the viewpoints (belvédères) have ample parking places. Be sure to park in a safe location that is obviously designated for tourists; falling rocks are often a danger on this stretch.

To conclude the driving tour, continue 20 kilometers south of Saint-Remèze to Pont-Saint-Esprit. From the village of Pont-Saint-Esprit, the road crosses the Rhône River at the point not far north of its confluence with the Ardèche River. Notice the graceful old stone bridge that is nearly 1,000 meters long. From this spot, there is an exceptional view of the river and Saint-Esprit village.

This typical medieval village is perched high on a cliff overlooking the Ardèche River. About 50 kilometers north of Saint-Martin d'Ardèche, the village is well worth a detour. The village has retained its historic character, seen in the cobblestone streets, winding alleys, and charming archways (the most famous is the Fachinière passage).

The town square dates from the 12th century, and Eglise Sainte-Madeleine is a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture. The village also has a handful of locally owned restaurants, cafés, and artisan boutiques.

About 45 kilometers northwest of Saint-Martin d'Ardèche, this quaint village is surrounded by three rivers and nestled in a cliff of limestone rock. Labeaume delights visitors with its medieval maze of cobblestone streets and narrow walkways lined with old stone buildings.

Above the village are ruins of an ancient château, and just below it is the Place Sablas, shaded by 100-year-old plane trees.

The rolling hills around Labeaume are filled with olive groves. Just outside the village are several hiking trails through the countryside. One of the trails leads to the Jardins Suspendus (Hanging Gardens), an extraordinary nature site near the Labeaume River.

Nearby on a limestone plateau is the hamlet of Chapias . This tiny town has a noteworthy chapel, the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Délivrance .

Tucked away along the Ardèche River banks at the base of a cliff, Vogüé is listed as one of France's "Plus Beaux Villages" (" Most Beautiful Villages "). The 17th-century Château de Vogüé (some elements date back to the 12th century) dominates this medieval village. The castle was the residence of the Marquis de Vogüé and is still owned by the same family.

The village is a cluster of old houses leading to the castle and a maze of meandering cobblestone streets interspersed with many arcades and vaulted passageways. The oldest parts of the village date from the 11th century, although much of the village was built in later centuries.

A worthwhile detour on any itinerary through the Ardèche, the village of Vogüé is about 50 kilometers north of Saint-Martin d'Ardèche.

Profile & Route Faun-Ardèche Classic 2023

The Faun classics weekend presents challenges for climbers and puncheurs, offering an opportunity to gauge their early-season form outside of stage races. The Faun-Ardèche Classic , scheduled for February 25th, stands out as one of the toughest one-day races of the season.

The 172-kilometer long route is highly mountainous with over 3000 meters of climbing. The climbing starts from kilometers 0 and is present almost all the way into the finish in Guilherand-Granges. The first loop - of which there will be two laps - includes a 9.9Km climb at 4.3%, a 1.7Km long climb at 3.9% and a 5.6Km climb at 4.2%.

The third look features a 1.9Km at 8.2% and a 6.3Km climb at 7.1%. All three laps also include the Côte de Val d'Enfer which comes only 6 kilometers before the finishing climb. It features 1.5 kilometers at an average of 10.3%, a very steep ascent where there is nowhere to hide and attacks are to be expected.

Gorges de l’Ardèche – An Active Holiday Guide

The spectacular Ardèche Gorge and surrounding area is the perfect destination for an active holiday. The Ardèche river winds its way down from the Massif Central carving out a steep canyon and the famous Pont d’Arc natural arch, creating a playground for outdoor sports enthusiasts.

Canyoning, rock climbing, hiking, via ferrata, kayaking, mountain biking, paragliding… You name it, you can do it in the Ardèche! The weather’s great too; bordering Provence, the southern Ardèche has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and lots of sunshine throughout the year.

The beautiful 32 km gorge winds its way from Vallon Pont d’Arc to Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche in the Rhône Valley. Drive the road following the rim with its spectacular viewpoints at regular intervals. Hike and bike the myriad of tracks and trails that crisscross the rocky terrain. Climb the pocketed limestone cliffs reaching up to 300 m high. And, paragliders can launch from the higher ground in the nearby Cévennes National Park and enjoy breathtaking views across the Ardèche to the Mont Ventoux.

But it’s from the river where you’ll really be able to appreciate the majesty of the canyon. Canoeing trips from a couple of hours to several days are straightforward to organise with local river running companies, and canyoning is a really fun and physical way to explore the gorge and get a good soaking at the same time.

When’s the best time to visit the Ardèche?

The Ardèche is a great destination at any time of the year, but from May to October the days are long and balmy and you can swim comfortably in the river.

May and June is the perfect time to visit especially if you want to get stuck into the outdoors. With long sunny days and temperatures that aren’t too high, you can enjoy empty hiking and biking trails, quiet rock climbing sites and nice high water levels for kayaking.

During July and August, the Ardèche river is packed with canoes and the Pont d’Arc gets super busy with tourists. The road along the canyon rim is jammed with traffic and accommodation gets booked up fast. Having said that, with a bit of effort you can still find some quieter areas along the river, on some of the harder to reach trails and in the old oak forests that make up so much of the landscape.

September is our favourite month. With the majority of holiday makers gone, the area is once again quiet. The river is still nice and warm for swimming, and the temperature is perfect for climbing, hiking and biking. Rain can be more frequent but tends to move through the area quickly giving way to some glorious, cool sunny days. Rain also means that the river levels begin to rise drawing some serious kayakers who enjoy the swelling rapids. Autumn days are mostly fresh and sunny and nights are cold. From December to February you can expect cold, crisp winter days with occasional snowfall. Spring comes early with frequent 20 degree days in March and April.

Although the winter tranquility and clear blue skies can be glorious, it’s worth noting that from the end of October to March many accommodation options, activity providers and restaurants close.

Pont d’Arc

The Pont d’Arc is a huge natural bridge carved out of the limestone by the Ardèche river. Located 5 km from the town of Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, the arch is 60 m wide and 54 m high. There’s plenty of parking a short walk from the arch and there’s a pebbly beach for sunbathing and great swimming in the river. Paddling through the arch is a highlight of a canoe trip down the river and it’s a nice idea to build in a rest stop here.

Grand Site de l’Aven d’Orgnac

20 minutes south of Vallon-Pont-d’Arc is the huge subterranean cave system of Aven d’Orgnac. With guided tours through the limestone cave and a museum of prehistoric artifacts, it’s a great day out for all ages. Antraigues-sur-Volane

The ancient village of Antraigues is perched high on an outcrop of volcanic rock and in 2014 was voted France’s 5th favourite village . It has been home to some of France’s great artists like musician Jean Ferrat and painter Jean Saussac who came here and never left. The countryside around Antraigues is stunning and there are a number of walking trails through the hundred year old chestnut trees, up to the Saint Roch chapel with wonderful views over the Auches escarpment and Espissart falls.

Les Gorges du Chassezac

The Chassezac Gorge is a rock climber’s dream destination. A tributary of the Ardèche, the Chassezac river has carved a beautiful vertiginous gorge through the mountainside creating a playground for adventure sports enthusiasts. You can spend your days rock climbing, canyoning, caving, canoeing and wild swimming in the crystal clear water. Along the southern banks of the river an ancient oak forest, the Bois de Païolive , is peppered with limestone boulders chiseled by erosion into weird formations that make them perfect for bouldering .

Paddle a canoe through the spectacular Ardèche Gorge, jump and slide your way down one of the region’s canyons, hike and bike the trails around Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and climb the pocketed cliffs of Richemale. With an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, the Mediterranean climate means there’s fun to be had all year round.

Canoeing and Kayaking in the Gorges de l’Ardèche

A descent down the spectacular Ardèche Gorge may well be the highlight of your Ardèche adventure…

You can rent canoes and head off downriver from a number of departure points in the gorge, including Vallon Pont d’Arc, Voguë, Balazuc, Ruoms, and Châmes. Choose anything from a 2 hour self-guided trip to a 3-day/60 km guided expedition with camping in the gorge. With some basic instruction, you can navigate the rapids of the Ardèche Gorge perfectly safely. After heavy rain, the rapids can be thrilling but they’re always followed by calm sections. You’ll float through the famous Pont d’Arc where you can paddle over to some pebbly beaches and take in the beauty of the gorge. In spring and autumn the Ardèche is in full flow and big volume rapids draw kayakers from all over Europe.

Canyoning and Aqua-Trekking

Jump, slide, swim and abseil your way down the beautiful canyons of the Ardèche. Vallon du Pont d’Arc is the region’s canyoning capital with descents to suit all abilities in close proximity to the town.

Equipped with a wetsuit, a helmet and a harness, you’ll feel like a kid again as you jump and slide your way down the canyon. You’re guide will have you jumping into rock-pools, swimming through whitewater and abseiling down waterfalls. Besides a good soaking, two things are guaranteed – you’ll have a huge amount of fun and you’ll be unbelievably tired at the end of the day.

Canyoning is a good workout and you need to be comfortable in moving water. That said, there are canyons for all abilities, so you can start with a shorter, more straightforward descent and build up to a more challenging trip. Jumps can be up to 8 metres high, but you’ll be shown the correct technique and there’s always an easy alternative route, so none of the jumps are compulsory.

Le Chassezac canyon

A super fun canyon with jumps and slides into deep, crystal clear rock pools, and abseils down foaming sprays of water. An unforgettable experience in unique surroundings.

La Borne canyon

The perfect canyoning fix. More obstacles, more jumps and more challenging than Le Chassezac, this is a canyon for thrill-seekers looking for adventure.

Mountain Biking

Dry, rocky tracks criss-cross the southern Ardèche through fragrant lavender fields and winding steeply up the hills overlooking the gorge.

With 100s of kilometres of waymarked trails, the Trans-Ardèche multi-day ride and the Monts d’Ardèche MTB event , there’s plenty of riding to keep even the most enthusiastic mountain biker happy.

The Trans-Ardèche

The Trans-Ardèche or La Grande Traversée de l’Ardèche , is a 260 km multi-day itinerary covering a total of 7450 m of vertical drop and reaching over 1600 m at it’s highest point. The trail is waymarked the whole way. The ride can be broken down into 3 sections – Northern Ardèche with two start points possible, Boulieu les Annonay or St Félicien, the Ardèche mountains, including the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Park, and Southern Ardèche, including Vallon Pont d’Arc and all the way to Bourg-Saint-Andéol in the Rhône Valley.

Monts d’Ardèche

About 70 km north of Vallon-Pont d’Arc is a protected area of forested limestone ridges, green valleys and plateaus known as the Pays de Cheylard. 436 km of waymarked trails broken down into 22 different routes, including a 126 km circuit, offer mountain biking for all abilities. It’s here that the Raid VTT des Monts d’Ardèche event takes place at the end of June each year. Pays de Saint Félicien

The Saint Félicien MTB area has 250 km of waymarked trails split across 15 different itineraries graded from green to black. The undulating terrain is perfect for mountain biking and highlights include the Col du Gibet and the singletrack around the village of Vaudevant. Rock Climbing

Pocketed limestone cliffs overhanging the river, granite slabs flanking ancient volcanoes and forests strewn with twisted boulders make the Ardèche one of France’s premiere climbing destinations.

Pocketed limestone ridges, granite slabs and steep gorges combine to make the Ardèche a climber’s dream. And with all grades of single-pitch sports climbing to rock hard multi-pitch trad routes, there’s something for everyone, from complete beginner to dedicated cliff hanger.

There’s masses of climbing in the Ardèche, here are some of the highlights:

Lac d’Issarlès – la Dame du lac

With 33 single pitch routes from 3b to 7a, this is superb climbing spot right on the lake, so in summer you can cool off with a refreshing swim.

Salavas – Fontgarnide

Located a stone’s throw from Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, Salavas is one of the most popular climbing sites in the southern Ardèche. It gets busy with tourists in the height of summer, but it’s a beautiful limestone rock wall with nice overhanging sections and over 100 routes from 4b to 8b+.

Bouldering in the Bois de Païolive

In the Gorges du Chassezac near Berrias-et-Casteljau is an ancient boulder strewn forest called the Bois de Païolive. The limestone blocks have been chiseled over millennia into strange shapes that make them great for bouldering. As you drive from Berrias-et-Casteljau along the d252 towards Mazet Plage, you can see some boulders along the side of the road.

Face Sud climbing school based in Vallon-Pont d’Arc offer lessons and guided trips for all levels.

Via Ferrata

Unleash your inner Tarzan and climb to impressive heights in the Ardeche Gorge via a network of cables, ladders, rope bridges and zip lines.

By embarking on a via ferrata adventure in the Ardèche you’ll experience the thrills and exposure of rock climbing while being securely tethered to a steel cable bolted to the rock. A half day trip will see you climbing to impressive heights via a network of cables, ladders, rope bridges and zip lines. A great group activity, bring a small backpack with some water, a snack and sunscreen and wear closed toe trainers. You’ll be kitted out with a helmet, harness and a set of via ferrata lanyards .

Pont du Diable Via Ferrata

Overlooking the Ardèche this 3 hour via ferrata course offers guaranteed thrills. The highlight is the huge 100 m long zip line that spans the river. Graded intermediate, you don’t need any previous via ferrata experience, but you do need to be reasonably fit.

The Pont du Diable via ferrata is about an hour’s drive from Vallon Pont d’Arc near the village of Thueyts, (lat,long 44.671073, 4.221356).

Lac de Villefort Via Ferrata

Overlooking a mountain lake, this via ferrata is wild and challenging, fitting of its location bordering the Cevennes National Park. The route is renowned for its exposure with rope bridges stretching between granite slabs and an impressive zipline. The full course will take about 3 hours, but there are a number of exit points making it ideal for a mixed ability group.

The Lac de Villefort via ferrata is located about 1 km outside Villefort towards Mende, 1 hour 10 mins by car from Vallon Pont d’Arc, (lat, long 44.448648, 3.930241).

Via Cordata de la Madonne

Similar to a via ferrata, this via cordata uses a sequence of ropes tethered to the rock rather than cables. Highlights include a big abseil and a suspended rope bridge with spectacular views over the Ardeche gorge.

The Via Cordata de la Madonne is about 35 minutes from Vallon Pont d’Arc. Head south on the D290 tourist route to Belvédère de la Rouvière just south of the Combe de Mounier ravine near the village of Bidon, (lat, long 44.334451, 4.514781).

Face Sud in Vallon-Pont d’Arc offer guided via ferrata trips for all abilities and kids from age 10.

Get down and dirty with the Ardèche by venturing underground. A labyrinth of limestone caves offers the intrepid visitor a whole new world of grottoes, tunnels, stalactites and secret waterfalls.

La Salle des Concrétions

This a fun and spectacular caving experience, accessible to all and ideal if it’s your first time. Navigate a sunken limestone arch, abseil into underground caverns and marvel at the beauty of the stalactites and stalagmites that this cave is renowned for. Top off your adventure with a 40 m zip-line across the cave’s biggest cavern.

Retrouvez la présentation complète de la Faun Drome Classic 2024 (1.Pro) qui se dispute ce dimanche février. L’épreuve française, 2e manche des Boucles Drôme-Ardèche, propose un parcours pour puncheurs sur 189 kilomètres.

La Faun Drome Classic 2024 (1.Pro) se dispute ce dimanche 25 février à l’ Étoile-sur-Rhone sur un parcours de 189 kilomètres. La 2e manche des  Boucles Drôme-Ardèche propose un profil très vallonné avec pas moins de 16 difficultés répertoriées et un final difficile avec un enchaînement de bosses. L’an dernier, Anthony Perez (Cofidis) s’était imposé en solitaire.

Le parcours de la Faun Drome Classic 2024

C’est sur le coup de 11h30 que sera donné le départ de la Faun Drome Classic 2024 (1.Pro) ce dimanche 25 février à l’ Étoile-sur-Rhone . Au programme, un parcours de 189 kilomètres très vallonné en circuit avec pas moins de 16 côtes et difficultés répertoriées. Les coureurs engagés enchaîneront le Mur d’Eurre , le Mur d’Allex , le Plateau de Soulier puis la Côte Chaude pour un premier passage sur la ligne d’arrivée. Une deuxième boucle identique sera à couvrir avant d’entamer le circuit final.

La dernière partie de la classique française, deuxième manche des Boucles Drôme-Ardèche , s’annonce corsée avec des montées plus longues. Ainsi, les coureurs passeront par le Col de la Tartaiguille (3,4 km à 4,7%) avant de poursuivre sur le Col de la Grande Limite (4,6 km à 6,1%) et la Côte des Roberts (1,6 km à 8%). Enfin, le final du parcours de la Faun Drome Classic 2024 proposera une nouvelle fois le Mur d’Allex et le Plateau de Soul ier avant de finir dans le Côte Chaude de l’ Étoile-sur-Rhone , 500 mètres à 6,8%.

Stage 19: Second-last mountain stage will play major part in GC battle

Tour de France organizers may be avoiding Paris for the first time ever, due to the Olympic Games being held there, but the final three days of the race will be suspenseful right up to the finish in Nice. Stage 19 will see the climbers go all out for success, with 4,500 meters of climbing in store.

The difficulty is further heightened by the fact that all three of the day’s climbs are over 2,000 meters, the level at which altitude really starts to have an effect.

The first half hour of racing is on rolling roads but from there the peloton will begin the climb of the Col du Vars. At 18.9km in length, it averages 5.7 percent but does top 10 percent early on. It summits at 2,105 meters and then the riders will plunge downhill for 22km before starting the Cime de la Bonette. This 23km brute is 6.9 percent average and ascends to 2,797 meters, the highest of this year’s Tour.

A 40km descent takes the riders to the day’s final climb, that of Isola 2000. It is another testing one, averaging 7 percent over 16.4km up to the finish.

The view of Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme: “The menu for this ultra-mountain stage could well make you dizzy, but it’ll also whet the appetite of the very best climbers. Although the stage is less than 150km long, the riders will climb above 2,000 meters on three occasions.

“The biggest test the climb to the summit of La Bonette, the highest road in France at an altitude of 2,802 meters. Its 360-degree panorama is breath-taking.”

VERNIER, Switzerland (AP) — Carlos Rodriguez protected his yellow jersey through a rain-soaked final stage Sunday to win the six-day Tour of Romandie for the biggest race victory of his career.

Four previous winners in the French-speaking region of Switzerland went on to win that season’s Tour de France, including Chris Froome in 2013. Rodriguez placed fifth in cycling’s marquee event last year and won a stage.

Rodriguez started Sunday’s flat stage that looped round the suburbs of Geneva — won in a sprint finish by Dorian Godon — with a seven-second lead he took by placing third in a mountain stage Saturday.

The 23-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider kept that winning margin over runner-up Aleksandr Vlasov, the 2022 Romandie winner. Third-placed Florian Lipowitz was third, trailing Rodriquez by nine seconds.

Godon sealed his second stage win this week, edging Simone Consonni with Dion Smith third.

Sécurité routière : les radars se multiplient en Ardèche

Attention, vous êtes flashés. Impossible d’échapper aux  radars  sur une départementale de l'Ardèch e,  qui flashent dans les deux sens : il y en a trois sur 8 kilomètres seulement entre Privas et Chomérac. Certains automobilistes sont excédés. Ces radars sont préventifs : en 2023,  23 accidents mortels ont eu lieu, dus notamment à la vitesse excessive, soit 73% de plus en un an.

Des radars mobiles

La préfecture vient d’installer un dernier radar qui peut être facilement déplacé le long de la départementale. Dans le village de Chomérac, cette initiative fait jaser au café du coin. Mais ces radars sont utiles selon le maire. Avec deux radars sur sa commune, il est le champion départemental de la prévention, même si la décision vient de la préfecture. Celle-ci a décidé d’augmenter le nombre de radars mobiles sur les routes de l'Ardèche.
