The best season to experience wine tastings and tours in Peloponnese

There is never a bad moment to experience wine tastings and tours in Peloponnese but if we have to decide, the best period is probably  spring . In this season temperatures are still not too high but warmer compared to other parts of Europe so you can still enjoy very sunny and hot days on the coast and mild temperatures in the inland. Autumn  is another great season to go for wine tastings and tours in Peloponnese because it’s harvesting season, both for grapes and for olives.

What to do in Peloponnese?

Peloponnese is a fascinating region, full of history and beautiful archaeological sites. Our suggestions are:

  • Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus , is an ancient theatre that dates back to 330-340 BC. It was built to receive performances in honor of Asclepius, the God of Medicine.
  • Olympia, the site where the Olympic Torch is lit before it starts its tour around the world to reach the location of the next Olympic Games.
  • Diros Cave is a complex of underground caves. The vast caverns are 15 km large, giving the tourist a 1,5 km illuminated route, stretched through several waterways.

What to taste in Peloponnese?

When you go for wine tastings and tours in Peloponnese, you can't miss tasting:

  • Moschofilero white wine . This wine is typical of central Peloponnese and it has a wide range of aromas and characteristics. The main notes are those of melon, pink grapefruit, lemon, and almonds. Dryness and body can change depending on the ageing period sometimes can be more than 10 years.
  • Agiorgitiko red wine. A fruity, Merlot-like wine that is very popular in Nemea district, close to the city of Corinto. Its main aromas are those of red and black fruits, plum, and spices such as oregano.

What to expect from wine tastings and tours in Peloponnese?

Wine tastings and tours in Peloponnese are a great way to learn about  winemaking techniques  in this historical wine region of Greece. Before the real wine tasting experience, you will be accompanied by winemakers around the  estate  for a visit to the  cellar room , the  ageing room  and in some cases you will get to taste wine directly from the ageing barrels. Then, as you discover the whole background of wine production in Peloponnese, you will get to sit in the  tasting room  to have some wine paired with amazing Greek food, such as cheese, olives and honey.

A wine lover’s guide to The Peloponnese

  • Magazine: April 2020 Issue

The Peloponnese peninsula, set in the heart of the Mediterranean south from mainland Greece, is a multifaceted territory, impossible to fully grasp if you only visit once. Vast and fascinating in equal measures, its landscape changes dramatically throughout the seasons and its sub-regions offer such a wide array of landscapes and interest points that you’ll easily be seduced to return.

Above all, the Peloponnese challenges the easy stereotypes of what Greece offers to visitors: warm seas, sun-drenched white terraces, fresh seafood… Yes, there is all of that, in abundance, but there are also snow-peaked mountains, endless architectural and historical landmarks, tempting local meat dishes, extreme sports havens. And there is, of course, the wine. The Peloponnese is home to the largest number of Greek wine PDOs, and its strategic location and the variety of its terroirs have made it an area of intense and diverse wine production since ancient times.

So how, as a first-time visitor, should you approach the region and start discovering its hidden treasures? The key advice is to trust the locals and stay away from the touristy hotspots that give a pale idea of the region’s true character. As appealing as it might sound to fly to Kalamata and settle on a seaside resort in the south Peloponnese, a more adventurous exploration will have its rewards – especially for the wine-loving traveller.

Fact file: Peloponnese

Area planted 19,400ha, responsible for 31% of total Greek wine production

Indigenous varieties 91% of total plantings

Wineries 180, with plots at altitudes ranging from 30m-1,000m above sea level

Ancient & modern

Fly to Athens instead, rent a car and start your journey by enjoying the less-than-two-hour drive that takes you from the capital, through the Isthmus of Corinth and on to Nafplio, a seaport town perched over the Mediterranean on the north side of the Argolic gulf. Nafplio was, between 1823 and 1834, the first capital of the new-born Greek state, and its picturesque centre is full of both ancient and modern historical cues. A short 30-minute drive from Nafplio is the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, considered one of the greatest architectural achievements of classical Greece – and an absolute must-see.

Both Nafplio and Epidaurus are great places to stay for two or three nights while you explore the eastern Peloponnese. A compulsory day trip is a visit to the city of Nemea, just a 40-minute drive from Nafplio. Nemea is the epicentre of the wine appellation of the same name, one of the most important in Greece, producing intense reds made exclusively from the local Agiorgitiko variety.

Here, you will find no shortage of renowned wineries that organise tastings and tours, including Seméli , Gaia and Lafazanis . And although the Ktima Papaioannou winery doesn’t routinely offer tours, you should also try to pay a visit – it’s a historical producer and the true pioneer of Nemea, Agiorgitiko and organic farming in Greece.

From Nemea, make your way – an easy 40-minute drive – to Mantinia, another lovely town and interesting wine appellation, sitting on the mountainous core of the Peloponnese. The local PDO wines, made from at least 85% of the indigenous pink-skinned Moschofilero grown at high altitude, are aromatic, vibrant and have mouthwatering acidity. Domaine Spiropoulos and Troupis Winery , two of Mantinia’s most prominent estates, are well worth visiting.

After wine tasting, what better than to investigate the local food? The nearby village of Vytina is known for its traditional feta cheese producers and exquisite honey, laboriously made by busy bees in the surrounding hills. From there you can easily reach the quaint Dimitsana, a quintessential stone-built Arcadian settlement, and the nearby Lousios gorge monastery trail. The dramatic canyon along the river Lousios has its quasi-vertical walls dotted with the Prodromou monastery, as well as the ancient and modern Philosophou monasteries. Along the way, you’ll also find the ancient Arcadian city of Gorys, making it one the most beautiful and interesting hikes in Europe.

The central Peloponnese is a great destination for foodies, history nerds and adventure-sports freaks alike. The limestone escarpments around the town of Leonidio offer impressive climbing challenges, the river Ladon is famous for rafting, and the village of Foloi, located in a nature reserve, offers beautifully scenic trekking routes.

Seaside sightseeing

After a few days of challenge and indulgence, it’s time to head west to the coastal area of Ilia, where locals go to enjoy the seaside, away from the crowds and the shadows of cruise ships. There, you’ll easily find small, secluded beaches where Greek is the only language spoken. The Kaiafas lake (which has natural sulphur-rich hot springs) and the nearby beach of Zacharo, a long expanse of bright, thin sand, are two of the most idyllic spots to spend a full day simply enjoying the healing powers of the sun and the water.

Ilia is also – and perhaps above all – a historical and archaeological treasure trove. The list of places to visit is almost endless, but among the unmissable is the archaeological site of Olympia, one of the most important complexes of ancient Greece, the cradle of the Olympic games and the backdrop to the iconic altar of Zeus. Also worth visiting are the temple of Apollo Epicurius, part of the Bassae archaeological site, and the Chlemoutsi castle, a medieval fortress on the westernmost promontory of the Peloponnese, offering impressive views of the Ionian sea and surrounded by a beautiful hexagonal keep.

In Ilia, sightseeing is easily paired with great wine tasting. The historic Mercouri Estate , founded in 1864, makes some of the best wines in the Peloponnese and a visit is therefore obligatory. There are also very interesting smaller estates, such as Ktima Brintziki , making delicious bottles while adhering to an ethos of sustainability.

And finally, at the end of each day, there are, of course, the dramatic sunsets over the Ionian sea.

Getting there

Both easyJet and Aegean Airlines fly to Kalamata in the south Peloponnese (only twice a week September-May, three times a week May-September), as well as Athens (daily flights). The best option might be flying to Athens and driving to the Peloponnese across the Isthmus of Corinth: the approach to the peninsula is beautiful, and you’ll need a car to explore the vast region.

THE PELOPONNESE

wine tours peloponnese

PELOPONNESE: ABSOLUTE BEAUTY AND DIVERSITY

A wine region witch is steeped in countless myths and rich history, renowned for its indigenous grape varieties, remote vineyards, abundance of mesoclimate and terroir suitable for premium viticulture. Peloponnese is prominent for its world-class monuments and monasteries. Luxury vacation in Peloponnese is the ideal food and wine lover’s Greek destination.

Peloponnese offers dramatic countryside with rugged plateaus and valleys, lofty snowcapped mountains and glorious beaches. A viticultural Noah’s Ark, as characterized by K. Lazarakis MW in his book, Peloponnese is very likely one of the first places on earth to grow grapes and produce wines consistently and methodically.

Peloponnese is definitely one of the first regions to make wine in Greece, dating back 4.000 up to 7.000 years according to the historians. There are endless references in Peloponnese in relation to wine and drinking practices, such as, to the Homeric epic “The Odyssey”. There we find poetic words that witness the region’s reach heritage in wine making.

A Wine Tasting Tour Through the Peloponnese

Clocking up the kilometers on a wonderful wine-themed road trip in the peloponnese..

Pagona Lapsati | November 13th, 2020

We planned a road trip to five wine-producing regions in the Peloponnese with the aim of meeting pioneer viticulturists implementing innovative techniques, as well as cosmopolitan winemakers who love gastronomy, art, warm hospitality and fine living in general.

In all, we visited seven wineries, where we sampled excellent wines from both indigenous and foreign grape varieties, which thrive in the region’s terroir.

However, beyond the wine we also had another reason to visit these wineries: their incredible locations: Here, wine tourism can be combined with explorations of important archaeological sites, hikes through a rich natural world and tours around beautiful villages.

Our journey began and ended in Corinthia, with a last stop at Nemea – which we discuss separately below due to its terroir’s particular features and great wines.

Leaving Ancient Corinth behind us, we followed the Olympia Odos motorway towards Kiato. The sea, vineyards, and olive trees dominate the landscape – indeed, the fruitful land that stretches out here is famous for its currants (the word is derived from Corinth), which are inscribed on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece.

First stop: Papargyriou Estate , in the village of Laliotis (10km from Kiato). Its newly built stone winery will start welcoming the public once the Covid-19 lockdown has passed. As we visited in the midst of the harvest, everyone was busy, with the works for the new winery being carried out at the same time.

We took a tour of the restaurant and tasting area, where visitors post-lockdown will be able to try out five different wines along with cheese and cold cuts. What could be better than enjoying the view on the new roof garden while drinking a white Papargyriou Blanc or a red Vinum Curtium?

We were guided around the oldest vineyard on the estate, located in a nearby terraced valley, and listened to Giannis Papargyriou tell the story of The King of the Mountains , a novel by French author Edmond About which describes Greece in the years of King Otto with sharp humor; it has given its name to two of the estate’s flagship wines: Le Roi des Montagnes Cuvée and Le Roi des Montagnes Syrah .

Papargyriou informed us that in the estate’s newest vineyard in Sofiana, near Xylokastro, at an elevation of 850m, foreign varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown next to the Moschoudi and Assyrtiko grapes.

Τip: Take a stop at the village of Ancient Corinth, its archaeological site and museum. Have a picnic along the millrace in the village of Evrostina , close to Derveni: The beautiful brook lends itself to walks amid a lush natural setting.

Our next stop is the Rouvalis Winery , on the mountain slopes of Aigialeia. Theodora Rouvalis and her Spanish husband, Antonio Ruiz Panego, are seeking to rebrand the winery with fresh ideas and premium labels. Their vineyards extend from Lampiri to Akrata on the slopes of four mountains and at elevations of up to 1,100m. By cultivating their vines on steep hillsides, they have become ambassadors of heroic viticulture, which involves vineyards that are difficult to care for and maintain due to their location and landscape.

We tried the Syrracho , consisting of a fruity Viognier partnered with a robust mountainous Roditis to produce a dry wine with a bright yellow color. Theodora, who has gathered experience from wineries in Spain, Chile, New Zealand and France, continues the innovative spirit of her father, Angelos Rouvalis; he built this model gravity-flow winery that does not use pumps for the different vinification stages but, instead, the natural power of gravity.

Theodora maintains that the region’s geography creates a microclimate which is key to a successful product. Grapes whose taste is enriched by the sea air , in vineyards on small and protected slopes, which yield small quantities of excellent quality: this is what the family focuses on. It creates new premium labels by experimenting with old, classic varieties.

They are attempting to do just this with the mountainous Roditis and the Tsigello , an old Mavrodaphne clone that is aged in modern amphorae; legally, a dry wine cannot be called Mavrodaphne so they revived this specific variety – which might have a low yield but is of great quality. Back at the winery, you can enjoy a tasting of either 4, 8 or 14 wines, paired with food platters.

Τip: Aside from its wines, the area is ideal for tours any time of the year. Vouraikos Gorge , Kalavryta – with its ski center and rack railway – as well as the beaches of Aigialeia are located within a short distance. If you keep going towards Patra, enjoy a glass of Mavrodaphne of Patras at the historic Achaia Clauss winery (Tel. +30 2610.527.089) or at the magnificent Parparoussis Winery , in Proastio (more commonly known by its former name of Bozaitika). In the latter, aside from Mavrodaphne, you must ask for a dry Sideritis Petite Fleur rosé – it is fresh and revitalizing like no other.

Our final destination in the region of Ilia was Korakochori , approximately 4km away from Katakolo, and more precisely, the Mercouri Estate , one of the oldest and most beautiful wineries in the country. It is an ideal place for those who love good wine and nice family stories.

The vines located on the right upon entering the estate are of the Refosco variety; Theodoros Mercouri brought the first cuttings from Friuli, northern Italy, in 1870. A few years later, the cosmopolitan businessman erected the first building on the estate, influenced by Italian architecture; today, visitors are still charmed by it.

Sitting at the big wooden table under the pine trees, surrounded by peacocks freely roaming around, adding color and character to the picture, made us feel like we were in a period movie. It was an ideal moment for a classic and fruity Ktima Mercouri red – made from Refosco and Mavrodaphne varieties – or a Foloi white , as we chatted with enologist Dimitris Kanellakopoulos about this unusual year.

“From a production point of view, we had a smaller crop but within reason. Fortunately, it has been a favorable year for crops, without any diseases, and it gave us very good quality grapes. We saw a bigger difference in tours and tastings. Here, we usually work with groups traveling by ferry that stop to visit Ancient Olympia, and with different event planners for celebrations such as weddings. Naturally, because of the pandemic, everything was kept to a minimum.”

The estate usually offers tasting packages to groups on organized tours.

Τip: Combine your visit to the Mercouri Estate with a stop at Ancient Olympia and its museums . If time allows, take a walk around the Foloi oak forest, which forms part of the Natura 2000 network. The forest, which extends over thousands of acres, rewards visitors with incredible images every season of the year.

On a Sunday morning, we took the provincial road connecting Ancient Olympia to Tripoli and headed for Mantineia . Over the approximately 115km we traveled, we only crossed paths with a group of cyclists; they were doctors from Athens, who like to hop on their bikes to explore Greece in their time off.

Driving in the beautiful nature of Gortynia , we ascended towards the Mantineia Plateau in the mountains at an elevation of 660m, where winters are intense and the renowned PDO Mantineia wine from 100 percent Moschofilero grapes is produced. There are a lot of excellent wineries in the region – including those of Boutari, Tselepos, Troupis and Spiropoulos – whose names are associated with extremely popular and beloved labels in Greece.

Most wineries in Mantineia can be visited from Mondays to Saturdays – keep this in mind when planning your trip. We were able to stop at the Troupis Winery after having called ahead. Panagiota Troupi filled our glasses with Tomi Mantineia , the winery’s PDO wine, Route 111 (from Agiorgitiko and Mavrodaphne grapes), which was awarded in the 50 Great Greek Wines 2020 competition , and Hoof & Lur, a modern, rosé version of Moschofilero , with aromas of flowers and dried herbs, a sharp acidity and a mineral aftertaste.

The winery focuses on Moschofilero grapes, which are vinified using an original technique, inside clay pots and concrete tanks; this gives the wine a long, characteristic mineral aftertaste. Hoof & Lur, Route Gris and Ekato – a complex rosé exclusively exported to the US – ferment and mature in these vessels. During the tour – of the vineyard as well as the winery – you will be introduced to the world of Moschofilero and Mantineia grapes, and you will have the chance to taste all nine labels of the winery.

Τip: Lagadia, Vytina and the rest of the villages in Gortynia are located a convenient distance from each other. A visit to the Mantineia vineyards constitutes a first-class excuse to enjoy Arcadian nature and the beauties of Mt Mainalo . However, do not miss out on the opportunity to visit Kapsia Cave, which is among most remarkable in Greece.

Dimitris Skouras was waiting for us at the door of Domaine Skouras in Malandreni, Argos . Even though the winery is located in Argolida, it belongs to the Nemea PDO wine region.

It was the beginning of September, and the grape crates had just arrived from the vineyards; everybody was helping to sort the bunches and bring them to the first tank, away from the heat. The workload was heavy, but everyone welcomed us warmly. We stood there for a bit before moving on to the cellars, where the low temperatures made us rapidly yearn for the burning heat of noon again.

Throughout the winery, George Skouras has displayed the charming collection of artwork he has amassed. Being an art lover, Skouras wanted to stimulate more than just one of his visitors’ senses, and decided to offer them an experience that would also be visual.

“We often organize exhibitions and meetings with artists here,” Skouras says. He and his sister Stella form the third generation of winemakers in the family.

They spoke to us about their new e-shop, where one can order old vintages that are no longer on the market. They specified which varieties and vintages age in barrels in the cellar and explained their characteristics.

Going back to the tasting room, we cooled off with a glass of Peplo rosé – but also a Dum Vinum Sperum Chardonnay , the first wine in Greece to be bottled with a screw cap. The Megas Oenos remains one of the winery’s most iconic wines. If, however, you want something more daring, ask for a Viognier – such as the Eclectique , which is akin to a citrus and tropical fruit dance in your mouth. The tasting comprises four different labels accompanied by grissini and graviera cheese.

Τip: Visit the archaeological sites of Mycenae, Ancient Tiryns, Lerna and Epidaurus , which are all near the seaside town of Nafplio .

Our road-trip in the Peloponnese wouldn’t have been complete without one – or more – stops in Nemea. A famous wine destination in and of itself, the region boasts some of the most famous Greek wineries .

Here, our wine journey began with the mythical demigod Heracles , who strangled the Nemean Lion as one of his 12 labors and was offered wine made from black grapes by a nymph. The wine from the ancient city of Phlius that was served at the Nemean Games is associated with today’s PDO Nemea wine , which is produced from 100 percent Agiorgitiko grapes and, depending on its production zone – mountainous, semi-mountainous, lowland – varies in complexity.

The PDO zone comprises 16 villages and over 40 wineries, including Nemeion, Ieropoulos, Palivos, Semeli, Gaia, Lafazanis and Lantides . The road runs alongside vine-planted slopes, and makes for easy hopping from one winery to the next.

We stopped at Gofas Winery ; its beautiful tasting area next to the river allows visitors to maintain a safe distance and thus enjoy a carefree tasting. The wine tasting normally takes place immediately after a tour of the winery’s halls and vineyard; it comprises 2, 4 or 8 wines accompanied by a platter. In the company of enologist Anna Georgoulaki, we tried the 2018 Romeo+Juliet , a blend of Chardonnay and Malagousia varieties; in the end, we stayed longer than expected, listening to wonderful wine stories.

Peloponnese

"A PLACE FULL OF WINE" HOMER

Peloponnese is the department of southern Greece looking almost like an island but yet connected to the mainland, through the Corinth Canal.

Its unique shape, the long shorelines, the high mountains and the plains in between, create a varied topography, which makes it difficult to generalize about its climate. Nevertheless, it is considered to be Mediterranean, with lengthy autumns, easy and pleasant winters, mild springs, hot and dry summers. The western part of Peloponnese receives more rainfalls.

Grape cultivation has been present in the area for at least 4000 years, even though Peloponnese was not that famous for its wine exports like the Aegean islands and Thrace. It was actually the period during which Malvasia wine started being produced in Monemvasia and exported worldwide by its port, until the 16 th century.

The biggest part of plantations was and still remains the varieties of Korinthiaki (black) and Soultanina (white), whose grapes are edible. In specific areas like Pyrgos, Patras and the Ionian island of Zakynthos, the main income was gained from raisin trade of these two varieties. Today, Peloponnese is one of the most impressive vine-growing regions, with many producers and well-established wineries, investing on the vinification of the local as well the international grape varieties, planted in the area.

Corinth is the closest area to Athens and also an important red wine supplier of Greece. The famous Nemea area, where some of Greece’s most stunning red wines are produced and the PDO Nemea appellation, from the red grape variety Agiorgitiko (grape of Saint George), named after “Agios Georgios”, are the proof of it. In antiquity, Nemea was producing the famous “Fliasios oinos”.

St George, Nemea

ST GEORGE CHURCH, NEMEA

Agiorgitiko is a “multidynamic”grape variety, which can produce great examples of dry wines, like fresh and fruity rosé wines, nouveau style reds, matured reds with long ageing potential, as long as expressive dessert wines. It’s characteristic aromas of red and black berries, plum and violet, the moderately deep, purple red color, the soft tannins and medium to high acidity, contribute to the great reputation that both Agiorgitiko, and PDO Nemea wines have acquired throughout the years.

Apart from Nemea, PDO Nemea wines are also produced in the neighboring Argolida, located south of Corinth, bordering the cool climate Arcadia on the west.

Arcadia , is located in the heart of the Peloponnese, close to the historic city of Tripoli, and is completely surrounded by high mountains. The pink-skinned Moschofilero almost dominates the area, and produces PDO Mantinia wines, with floral profile and characteristic flavours of rose petals dominating, medium body and noticeable, crispy acidity. Nowadays, there are great examples of dry white wines, refined rosé wines and interesting sparkling ones, vinified with the traditional method of Champagne.  Often enough, Moschofilero grapes have to struggle facing late frosts and extremely cool weather conditions, that can delay the ripening even more, thus sometimes the harvest can continue until early November. Other white grape varieties cultivated in the area, are Asproudes.

Laconia is located in the southeastern part of the Peloponnese, including the renowned Monemvasia port, which was also known as the “Gibraltar of the East”.

Malvasia wine was produced in the area for centuries, and still does, under the appellation PDO Monemvasia-Malvasia, appellation which was released in 1994, and is made by Monemvasia grapes – at least 51%, blended with the powerful Assyrtiko, the up-and-coming Kydonitsa and the indigenous Asproudes grape varieties, in still white, sweet or fortified style.

Messinia is located in the south-west part of Peloponnese and is more influenced by the Ionian sea. So, in Messinia we may find a lot of varieties from the Ionian islands as well as a lot of indigenous varieties of the rest of Peloponnese and many international ones. There are no PDO appellations only PGI’s.

Ilia is in the north-west of Peloponnese, also receiving a lot of rainfalls, so humidity can be a problem for the viticulture in the area. Ilia was quite famous for the raisin production and have been commercially connected to Patras and Messinia for trade reasons. Apart from plantations of Mavrodaphne, which can be found here, Refosco is the gem of the area, introduced in 1870s by a local producer, who brought it from Italy.

Achaia , with the big city of Patras, has a total vineyard acreage of more than 5,000 he. There are four PDO appellations in the area, a general PDO Patras, PDO Muscat of Patras, PDO Muscat of Rio Patras, and the most well-known, PDO Mavrodaphne of Patras.

Mavrodaphne of Patras appears to be registered as a different variety than Mavrodaphne of Kefalonia. Roditis, is the star of the department with numerous plantations, showing its best racy expressions in high-altitude vineyards, like the ones cultivated on the slopes of Aigialia (PGI), where it gives its best expression, in elegant white wines, with crispy acidity.

A bit higher in Kalavryta, Mavro Kalavrytino (Black of Kalavryta) is a rare variety that was rescued and planted by local producers, giving wines with medium body and intensive aromatic profile of black fruits.

Korinthiaki raisin remains the number one edible grape variety cultivated in Patras area. Its importance in financial terms for the trade of Patras is still tremendous. Apart from the plethora of indigenous varieties found almost extinct in the villages of Achaia, a lot of international ones, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay etc., are also cultivated.
