Walking Tours in St. Croix, USVI

Christiansted

Start:          The Visitors Bureau.

Finish:          Christiansted’s harborfront.

Time:          1 1/2 hours.

Best Times:          Any day from 10am to 4pm.

Worst Times:          Monday to Friday 4 to 6pm.

The largest town on St. Croix, Christiansted still has many traces of its Danish heritage. Constructed by the Danish West India Company, the heart of town is still filled with many imposing old buildings, mostly former warehouses, from the 18th century. Today they are registered as a U.S. National Historic Site. Across a small park stands Fort Christiansvaern, which the Danes built on the fortifications of a 1645 French fort. From its precincts, some of the best views of the harbor can be seen. Christiansted is best seen by walking tour.

1  The Old Scale House

This yellow-sided building with a cedar-capped roof is located near the harborfront. It was originally built as the Old Scale House in 1856 to replace a similar structure that had burned down. In its heyday, all taxable goods leaving and entering Christiansted’s harbor were weighed here. In front of the building lies one of the most charming squares in the Caribbean. Its old-fashioned asymmetrical allure is still evident despite the mass of cars. Inside is an information center and a bookstore and gift shop.

With your back to the scalehouse, turn left and walk through the parking lot to the foot of the white-sided gazebo-like band shell that sits in the center of a park named after Alexander Hamilton, who spent his adolescence on St. Croix. The yellow-brick building with the ornately carved brick staircase is the:

2  Old Danish Customs House

This is currently the headquarters of the National Park Service. The gracefully proportioned 16-step staircase was added in 1829 as an embellishment to an older building dating back to 1734. During the island’s Danish occupancy, this is where merchants paid their taxes. (There are public toilets on the ground floor.)

Continue climbing the hill to the base of the yellow-painted structure, which is:

3  Fort Christiansvaern

This is the best-preserved colonial fortification in the Virgin Islands. It’s maintained as a historic monument by the National Park Service. Its original four-sided, diamond-shaped design was in accordance with the most advanced military planning of its era. The fort is the site of the St. Croix military museum, which documents police work on the island from the late 1800s to the present with photos, weapons, and other artifacts. The admission price of $3 also includes admission to the Steeple Building. The fort is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. For information, call tel 340/773-1460.

Exit from the fort, and head straight down the tree-lined path toward the most visible steeple in Christiansted. It caps the appropriately named:

4  Steeple Building

Completed in 1753, the Steeple Building was embellished with a steeple between 1794 and 1796. For a time it served as the headquarters of the Church of Lord God of Sabaoth, the island’s first Lutheran church. The original structure can still be visited. Inside is a National Park Service museum with exhibits on plantation life on the island. Admission is included in the $3 ticket for Fort Christiansvaern.

Across Company Street from the Steeple Building is a U.S. post office.

5  The Danish West India & Guinea Warehouse

The building that houses the post office was built in 1749 as the warehouse for the Danish West India and Guinea Company. The structure was once three times larger than it is today and included storerooms and lodging for staff. Go to the building’s side entrance, on Church Street, and enter the rear courtyard. For many years, this was the site of some of the largest slave auctions in the Caribbean.

From the post office, retrace your steps to Company Street and head west for 1 block. On your left, you’ll pass the entrance to Apothecary Hall, 2111 Company St., which contains a charming collection of shops and restaurants.

6   Luncheria

If you need refreshment, try Luncheria, Apothecary Hall Courtyard, 2111 Company St. (tel 340/773-4247). The bar’s tables are grouped in a courtyard shaded by trees. The owners are margarita specialists, stocking more types of tequila (15-plus) than any other bar in the neighborhood. Luncheria serves burritos, tostadas, enchiladas, and tacos, as well as daily specials and vegetarian meals.

Exit Apothecary Hall and turn left onto Company Street. Walk across Queen Cross Street (Dronningens Tvergade). A half-block later, you’ll arrive at the island’s largest outdoor market:

7  Hendricks Square

The square was rebuilt in a timbered, 19th-century style after the 1989 hurricane. Fruits and vegetables are sold here Monday through Saturday from 7am to 6pm.

Retrace your steps a half-block along Company Street, then turn left onto Queen Cross Street. Head downhill toward the harbor, walking on the right-hand side of the street. Within a half-block, you’ll reach an unmarked arched iron gateway, set beneath an arcade. Enter the charming gardens of:

8  Government House

This grand Danish Colonial building was formed from the union of two much older town houses in the 1830s. It was used as the Danish governor’s residence until 1871, when the Danish West Indies capital was moved to Charlotte Amalie, on St. Thomas. The European-style garden here contains a scattering of trees, flower beds, and walkways. The gardens are open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. The Virgin Islands Tourism Office is located downstairs.

Exit the same way you entered, turn right, and continue your descent of Queen Cross Street. At the first street corner (King St.), turn left and you’ll see:

9  Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church

This neoclassical church was built sometime before 1740 and was originally the site of the Dutch Reformed Church; it was turned over to the Lord God of Sabaoth congregation in 1834, when a Gothic Revival tower was added. Much inside predates the Lutheran occupation, including the tower bell, cast in Copenhagen in 1793, and an impressive 18th-century picture frame fashioned of local mahogany that resides behind the altar.

Continue walking southwest along King Street. Within 2 blocks is the:

10  Limprecht Gardens & Memorial

For 20 years (1888–1908), Peter Carl Limprecht served as governor of the Danish West Indies. Today, an occasional chicken pecks at seedlings planted near a Danish-language memorial to him.

At the end of the park, retrace your steps to Queen Cross Street, and go left. One very short block later, turn right onto Strand Street, which contains some interesting stores, including at least two different shopping arcades. The streets will narrow, and the pedestrian traffic will be more congested. Pass beneath the overpass belonging to a longtime bar and restaurant, the Club Comanche.

Continue down the meandering curves of King’s Alley. Within 1 block you’ll be standing beside:

11  Christiansted’s Harborfront

End your tour here by strolling the boardwalk of the waterside piers and watching the sailboats bob in the harbor (and perhaps a seaplane touching down).

christiansted-st-croix-map.jpg

Follow our Christiansted map for this historic walking tour.

Begin a tour of historic Christiansted at Fort Christiansvaern , which was built by the Danish in 1749 and is complete with dungeons and cannons (although it never saw battle). Across D. Hamilton Jackson Park is the Old Danish Customs House and Post Office , built in 1751 and converted to the Christiansted Library in 1926.

Around the corner on Company Street is the current U.S. Post Office and Customs House, originally the West Indies & Guinea Company Warehouse . Slave auctions used to be held in the courtyard here. The Steeple Building is across the street. Formerly the Lutheran Church, it is now the National Park Service Museum with displays of St. Croix's history from the time of the Indians. A short distance up Company Street is Apothecary Hall , an 18th century pharmacy now housing offices and shops. Just off Company, on Queen Cross Street, is the Visitors Bureau, a source of helpful information. Continue along Company to Market Place , especially colorful on Saturday mornings.

At the corner of King Cross Street turn right and walk one block to King Street. On the far corner you'll see the Florence Williams Library , built of Flensborg brick, which was used by the Danes as ballast. Turn right on King Street to the Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church , built in the 1740s. The floor tiles and grave markers were moved from the former Lutheran Church. The Gothic Revival tower was added in 1831 to the Dutch Renaissance main structure.

Continue north on King Street to Government House on the right, open to the public and worth a visit. This served as residence for Governors of the Danish West Indies and offices of the colonial government. The Baroque central wing was built in 1747 as a private residence. It was purchased as the Governor's residence in 1771, and was expanded to include the planter's residence to the west in 1828 and the eastern porch in the 1830s. A row of arcaded buildings across the street includes the Alexander Hamilton House .

End your tour in the center of Wharf Square at the Scale House or Old Custom House, built in 1856 to weigh and inspect imports and exports passing through this thriving port. The old scales are still there.

One of the top 5 things to do in St. Croix

BushTribe Eco Adventures

This was an amazing experience, our guide Travis was the absolute best. It really exceeded my expectations, hike was a GREAT workout and seeing the the tide pools was so beautiful. Thank you so much Travis!

Took my mom on the Bioluminescent kayak tour and we loved it! It was timed perfectly with the moon cycle. The water sparkled with each stroke. Our guides, Chris and Evan, knew a lot about the area, its history, and the organisms that called it home. Will definitely be doing this again.

Both the bio bay and the tide pools were awesome! Our tide pools guides were excellent and patient, even took our photos. Lots of laughs and meaningful conversations that didn’t feel forced. Very well informed guides. The kayak tour was good too, and there’s fun trivia for a prize! It was difficult but seeing the bioluminescence made it well worth the money!

It was amazing to see the bio-luminescence on this trip. We were lucky enough to see dinoflagellates along with glowing jelly-fish and glowing sea-worms. Apparently this bay is a great place to see dinoflagellates year-round. Expect to canoe about 20 minutes each way to get out in the bay. I would highly recommend this!

We did the bioluminescence bay clear kayaks (which I recommend all the way) and it was terrific! Everything was very professional and clean. Starts off with some super fun trivia then heading out into the bay. Very informative on where to sit, and plenty of guides out to make sure you don’t get split up. The overall length of the tour was perfect. Didn’t feel like we were rushed and felt like we had the right amount of exploration. The clear kayaks are 1,000% worth it. As you are in the bay and paddling it almost looks like shooting starts as the kayak goes through the water. That’s the only way in my opinion to get the best experience. 10/10 would recommend bush tribe to anyone interested.

I booked a bioluminescent kayaking tour and had an amazing time! Chris was a fantastic tour guide! He had so much information about the area! My husband and I both got to hold a jelly fish glowing in our hand! The krill were like stars in the sky when your hand went through the water! Unreal! Would definitely recommend anyone to experience this trip!

Super friendly and flexible staff. Amazing knowledge of local history and local plants/animals. We did a walking tour with them and a kayak tour. Both were AMAZING experiences. I just can't say enough kind things about this company. Great communication before the events with reservation confirmation and directions to the meeting sites. If we're in St. Croix again, we will absolutely do one of their tours again.

14 Awesome Things to do in St Croix USVI

palm tree at mermaid beach - things to do in st croix usvi

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning if you buy or book through one of these links, I may earn a small commission .

Is St. Croix on your bucket list for a chill island getaway? While this tropical gem is a popular cruise port, it deserves its own extended visit. You’ll want time to experience all the best things to do in St. Croix USVI, from beaches to awesome day trips.

Although St. Croix is the largest of the three main US Virgin Islands, it sometimes flies under the radar.  The is because the island is located about 40 miles south from its sister islands, St. Thomas and St. John .  The latter two are only about four miles apart and are frequently visited together, along with the neighboring BVI .

Therefore, my husband and I decided to finally give St. Croix its own dedicated visit.  Ultimately, the trip was completely worth it to witness the landscapes and culture of St. Croix that make it unique.  I loved the availability of awesome beach bars by the water, some of which also made amazing sunset spots!

This island truly offers something for every taste, whether you seek to relax, eat local food, or have an adventure. Without further ado, here are the 14 best things to do in St. Croix USVI.

The 14 Best Things to do in St Croix USVI

1. mermaid beach at the buccaneer resort.

Bright blue water at Mermaid Beach on St Croix

St. Croix’s Mermaid Beach is located at the Buccaneer Resort, which is one of the nicest luxury resorts on the island.  This beach lived up to its dreamy reputation, with soft white sand gently leading down to small waves.

The scenery was lovely, with the beach being flanked by St. Croix’s rugged hills on either side.  However, my favorite section was this tiny little black sand cove, which sat almost hidden on the left-hand side of the beach.   If a mermaid truly lived at Mermaid Beach, that is where you’d find her.

The other nice perk about this beach is that it has its own restaurant at the resort.  That means there is beach service for ordering food and drinks, even for non-resort guests.

That said, if you are not staying at the resort, you will need to bring your own chairs and sit on the far-left side of the beach.  Don’t worry though – that section is still really nice.

Unfortunately, coolers are also not allowed.  However, with the parking lot sitting a short distance away, you could consider simply leaving the cooler in the car. Then you could discreetly walk your food and drinks to the beach.

2. Buck Island

Crystal Clear turquoise water at Buck Island near St Croix

If you like to snorkel, then a boat tour to Buck Island is a must.  Our tour with Big Beard’s was awesome, first taking our group to one of the most beautiful beaches in existence, Turtle Beach.

This beach had some of the most pristine, crystal-clear water I’ve ever seen.  Being that the water was so calm, it was a good space to practice snorkeling for new or rusty snorkelers.

Although I could have stayed at this picturesque beach all day, after 45 minutes it was time to snorkel.  We boated over to the other side of the island, which had choppier water and a little seaweed.  That said, I wasn’t missing the other side of the island for too long.

What greeted me under the surface were some of the most magnificent coral reef formations I’ve even seen.  The corals were HUGE, with many estimated to be as much as 10,000 years old.  It’s no wonder that Buck Island Reef is considered a National Monument by the National Park Service.

Truly, this was the best snorkeling I’ve ever done, and I would do it again without question.  While we only did a half-day tour, the full-day adds a hike on Buck Island and lunch on another beach.

3. Dine During Sunset on the Christiansted Boardwalk

Pink and purple sunset from boardwalk in Christiansted

To dine on the water while witnessing an incredible sunset, head straight to the Christiansted boardwalk.  While the boardwalk features several dining options, we particularly enjoyed Shupe’s , where you can essentially build your own burger.

While devouring the juiciest blue cheese and bacon burger, I witnessed the sky as it burst into spectacular hues of red and fuchsia. Eventually, the last light of twilight over the harbor faded into the horizon.  Even still, the water shined so clear and bright in the dusk, with light from the boats in harbor reflecting off the surface.

Bottom line – watching the sunset from the Christiansted boardwalk is one of the best things to do in St. Croix USVI, and should not be missed.

4. Try Local Vodka

Stone exterior on the water of Sion Farm Distillery inside a former windmill

Sion Farm Distillery makes their own vodka on St. Croix, called Mutiny Island Vodka. This unique vodka is made from breadfruit, a starchy fruit that was historically brought to St. Croix as sustenance for slave labor.

The inspiration behind the name “Mutiny Island Vodka” comes from the HMS Bounty’s 1787-1789 failed mission to bring breadfruit saplings from Tahiti to the West Indies.  Upon the return from Tahiti, the ship had barely made it to Tonga when a group of around 25 men could no longer tolerate the oppressive leadership of their commander, William Bligh.  As a result, Bligh and his supporters were set adrift in the Pacific, from where they would miraculously make their return to England.

You can stop by the Sion Farm Distillery tasting room, which is situated in a windmill on the Christiansted boardwalk, for a brief tour before trying some vodka.  Tours are offered on a walk-in basis, every hour on the half-hour.

5. Point Udall

stone structure at Point Udall - best things to do on St Croix

For a small adventure, drive out to Point Udall on the far east point of St. Croix. Point Udall was named in 1969 for Stewart Udall, who served as Secretary of the Interior under presidents Kennedy and Johnson.

Point Udall also happens to also be the easternmost point of the United States, including all US territories.

As you make your way east, you’ll notice the traffic thin and the landscapes become more arid.  Don’t forget to look out your window for some of the best views out to the sea that you’ll experience on St. Croix.

Upon reaching Point Udall, it’ll be hard to miss “Millennium Monument” towering in the center, which officially marks the easternmost point of the United States.  This giant stone sun dial was designed by Bill Rich to be unveiled in 2000. It symbolizes the first sunrise of the new millennium over US soil.

Don’t forget to bring you camera to capture panoramic views of glistening blue water for miles.

6. Rainbow Beach Near Frederiksted

Small boat anchored in shallow waters of Rainbow Beach on St. Croix

Western-facing Rainbow Beach is one of the dreamiest beaches on St. Croix.  During the day, this beach caters to sunbathers and jet skiers.  In the evening, Rainbow Beach is ideally situated for watching the sunset.

Those arriving onto St. Croix at the Frederiksted cruise port will especially love this beach, as it’s located just a mile away.

Parking can be found along the road just across the street from the beach.  It is possible to rent beach chairs and other water sport rentals from West End Water Sports right on site.  Two lounge chairs and an umbrella cost $40 for the day.

What I also love about Rainbow Beach is that it’s possible to buy a drink from the neighboring Rhythms beach bar to walk back to your chair.

Alternatively, if you visit Rainbow Beach for sunset, then a visit to Rhythms for a casual dinner is a must.  Not only is the view amazing, but their menu features delicious beachy fare like fresh fish tacos and various other finger foods.  Make sure you order a side of the parmesan truffle fries, which come decadently dripping in truffle oil.

7. Explore the Rainforest

Local restaurant in the rainforest of St Croix

St. Croix is unique from St. John and St. Thomas in that it has its own small rainforest. Take a drive down Mahogany Road to see a totally different side of St. Croix and to hear echoes of the island’s history.

Along the way, take note of the namesake Mahogany trees that line the road.  They were originally planted by the Danish who once colonized St. Croix over 200 years ago.

Don’t forget to make a stop at the Mt. Pellier Domino Club for lunch.  Be sure to arrive early on Friday if you want to try the weekly roti special, which is one of the most delicious local dishes in the Caribbean.  It will run out!

Feeling more adventurous?  Book an ATV tour with Gecko’s Island Adventures to ride through parts of the rainforest, as well as get off the beaten path.  The “Original Gecko’s Tour” takes you on a 13-mile route with stops to view magnificent scenery and historical sites.

8. Beer Drinking Pigs: One of the Oddest Things to do on St Croix USVI

Three beer drinking pigs on St Croix USVI

If you are stopping into the Mt. Pellier Domino Club, you might want to inquire about the beer drinking pigs.  Yes, this is a thing.  It all got started inadvertently one day, when one of the OG pigs grabbed a beer right out of the hands of a visitor and guzzled it down.

Don’t worry – it’s only non-alcoholic beer, which will not harm the pigs, but it’s a crazy sight to behold.  Admission is $2 and it is an additional $4 to purchase the pig beer.  After that, you will be led to the pen for some mild entertainment.

Basically, as soon as you even hold the unopened can in reach of the pigs, one of them will grab it out of your hand.  They crush the can open with their teeth and suck out all the contents before chucking it away.  It’s a crazy sight with the foam spilling out of their mouths and you may walk away bewildered at the spectacle you just witnessed.

It’s good fun though!  Keep in mind that these pigs are family pets, lovingly cared for, and never forced to drink “beer” if they aren’t in the mood.

9. Dinner at Hamilton’s

Delicious dishes served at Hamilton's in Christiansted

Did you know that Alexander Hamilton, aka American founding father and play namesake, spent some of his childhood and adolescence on St. Croix? Alexander spent much of that time working as a clerk, which would later serve him in his role of Secretary of Treasury.

The restaurant Hamilton’s gives a nod to this legacy on St. Croix while serving sophisticated meals in an upscale atmosphere.  This restaurant is located in Christiansted and accepts walk-ins, although it’s best to make reservations in advance.

The inside is cozy and intimate, with a nice mix of modern and period touches, like rustic wooden details and a colonial ink font on the menu. I couldn’t get over the script “H” that was seared into the top of my burger bun.

10. Explore Historic Things to do in Christiansted, St. Croix USVI

Leafy garden-like path on a Christiansted street - things to do in St Croix

Whether you take a walking tour or simply wander on your own, it would be a mistake not to explore Christiansted during your trip. The town was once a capital of the “Danish West Indies” or today’s US Virgin Islands , and houses the first National Historic Site in the territory.

Take an afternoon to explore Christiansted National Historic Site and learn about the period of Danish occupation from 1733 to 1917. The top things to do within these historic 7 acres on St. Croix USVI include:

  • Take a walking tour. To inquire about ranger-led tours, call this number: (340) 773-1460 (ext. 232)
  • Visit Fort Christianvaern, the Steeple Building, and the Scale House
  • View the Danish Custom House and the Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse
  • Pause for a waterfront picnic on the grounds

Additionally, if your craving deeper insight into Alexander Hamilton’s time on St. Croix, sign up for this Hamilton-themed historical walking tour .

11. Watch the Sunrise

View of sunrise from condo on the north shore of St Croix

I make it a point to get up once to catch the sunrise during every visit to the US Virgin Islands . Not everyone likes an early wake-up call on their vacation, but I find it so rewarding to be virtually an audience of one while the sky erupts into color before my eyes. Don’t get me wrong – I usually go straight back to bed afterwards.

If you also don’t want to miss the beauty of at least one sunrise, it’s easiest if you stay somewhere right on the coast. This allows you to simply roll out of bed and look out from your window or patio.

It just so happens that St. Croix has plenty of condo options that will enable you to do just that. For example, Aaron and I stayed in this modern yet affordable condo along the north shore of St. Croix, where we could see both the sunrise and sunset views every day. Although the beach right outside our door wasn’t swimmable, we adored the constant scene of waves breaking through our patio doors.

12. Visit Cane Bay for Ombre Water and Beautiful Coastal Views

Girl walking into ombre water at Cane Bay - things to do in st croix usvi

Cane Bay is the beach on St. Croix that most gives me that laidback feeling of being away in the Virgin Islands . The water was calm with so many shades of blue in an ombre pattern, fading from dark blue to aquamarine. As you look west down the beach, there are big hills with lush greenery stretching along the water in the distance.

This side of the island is low key and not overly developed with shopping and resorts. That said, there are some really great beach bars over here, which are perfect for lunch or simply spending an afternoon watching the waves while sipping a drink.

I particularly like The Landing Beach Bar for a good mix of bar food and healthy salads, as well as Off the Wall for simple options like sandwiches and pizza.  The latter is also known to be a good sunset spot

Cane Bay is also a haven for divers and snorkelers.  Divers will love exploring the famous “Wall” just 300 yards offshore, which is where the ocean floor dramatically plummets more than two miles deep along the Puerto Rico Trench.  Snorkelers can see plenty of fish, as well as check out the living coral garden that is part of an ongoing restoration project.

13. Hike to a Remote Beach

Girl standing at high part of trail overlooking beach on St Croix

If you’d like to get a bit off the beaten path during your St. Croix USVI getaway, one of the coolest things to do is hiking to a remote, rugged beach like Jack and Isaac Bays. The trailhead is just a short distance from Point Udall and is easy to combine with a visit there.

Although the full trail is of moderate difficulty and 3.6 miles out and back, you could make it easier by stopping the trail short at Isaac Bay Beach. This beach requires a short downhill hike of less than one mile, although you could continue for a more challenging hike to even more remote Jack Bay Beach. Where a hat and bring water because there is little to no shade.

We only hiked to Isaac and I personally found the trail relatively easy, even with the uphill climb on the way back. This is also a favorite snorkeling spot, although the water can sometimes get choppy or have a current. Use your judgement, as there might not be anyone around to help if something goes wrong.

Full disclosure, there was sargassum at this beach when my husband and I visited in late May. However, I’m glad I didn’t know before heading out, otherwise we might have opted out of seeing St. Croix’s magnificent south shore.

We enjoyed the peace and quiet while relaxing in the shade beneath low trees and shrubs. I was happy to have sandals to avoid the little prickly spurs hidden in the sand near the vegetation.

Travel Savvy Tip

There are some parking spots next to the trailhead, but do not leave valuables in your car and consider leaving your doors unlocked. Unfortunately, break-ins have sometimes happened. Even if you have nothing to steal, keeping your doors unlocked might prevent someone from shattering your windows.

Don’t worry – we didn’t feel unsafe at all during our hike. These are simply petty crimes of opportunity that unfortunately target unsuspecting tourists.

14. Eat Parmesan Truffle Fries

Plate of tacos and truffle fries while dining at Rhythms at Rainbow Beach during sunset

Have you ever heard of having truffle fries, or truffle anything, at a beach bar? I personally never did before St. Croix, but I certainly wasn’t upset to see them on a few menus.

Even though I tended to find truffle fries at super laidback spots, they always delivered on flavor and deliciousness. I recommend that you also make having truffle fries during your beach vacations a thing!

The most memorable truffle fries I ate during our St. Croix trip was at Rhythms on Rainbow Beach during sunset. We also found them on the menu at Shupe’s, which coincidentally were also devoured during golden hour.

There are plenty of things to do on this list that’ll ensure you never get bored during a vacation in St. Croix USVI. Whether it’s spending days on the beach, strolling the Christiansted boardwalk at night, or day tripping to Buck Island, there are so many ways to experience St. Croix. It’s hard to fit everything into one week, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself returning to this intriguing island.

The best things to do in St Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Whether you are visiting St Croix for a wedding, honeymoon, or family vacation, here are the can’t-miss beaches and attractions on this Virgin Island, and some of them may surprise you. Whether you are arriving into the cruise port or airport, there is plenty to do on St. Croix for every type of traveler, even with limited time on the island.

Frederiksted 2 Tank Wreck Dive

A Frederiksted dive on the Leeward side of St. Croix offers lake like conditions and the opportunity to dive three wreck sites and a virgin coral reef with a variety of marine life. That’s why it’s been voted one of the top dive spots in the Caribbean by Skin Diver Magazine.

Your shallow wreck tour starts with the Suffolk Maid, a 144’ North Sea fishing trawler that sits in 60' of water. You'll proceed past a barge named The Virgin Islander. Progressing along to the final wreck, you’ll dive the North Wind, a 75’ tugboat sitting in only 40' of water. The North Wind was used in the movie "Dreams of Gold, The Mel Fisher Story". Second dive spot will be at a healthy, very colorful, coral reef. At an average depth of just 45’, it is a relaxing, easy dive. Conveniently, it’s less than a 10 minute ride back to the cruise ship pier after this dive.

The Ultimate 5 Day St Croix Itinerary

st croix us virgin islands vacation itinerary

So, I have friends from High School coming to the island for the first time later next week. Of course, I want to show them the very best that St Croix has to offer, so I’ve put together the ultimate St Croix Itinerary to make sure they see the island, experience the culture, and go back home raving and telling all their friends about what a magical place St Croix is. I’ve got five days to convince them that our little sunny island is the bomb-diggitty so here are my suggestions for the ultimate St Croix experience.

Arrival Day – relax, check-in and make your way into Christiansted to the Boardwalk for harborside sunset cocktails. Then head over to one of my favorite St Croix restaurants, Savant,   for a delicious dinner on the über sexy back patio under the stars.

savant

Rum Tours! If you’ve heard of St Croix, you’ve likely heard of Cruzan Rum – but did you know that Captain Morgan Rum is also made here on St Croix? And both plants offer cool tours and, of course, tastings! I recommend heading first to the Captain Morgan Experience Center . The tour there is about an hour and you get two drink tokens to sample the goods in the Captain’s Lounge. The Captain Morgan plant is state-of-the-art and mostly automated. The Experience Center offers a museum-like walk through the history of rum, piracy, and the Caribbean.

Cptn-Morg-Exp_26

After the tour, head West on the Melvin Evan’s Highway and take a right at the second set of lights – follow that Road down to the Cruzan Rum Factory . Here, the Nelthropp Family has been (and still is) making rum since 1760! You’ll take a tour through their facility and see how their hand-crafted rums are made and learn all about the rum-making process. As you wind your way through the warehouses of vats and rum aging in oaken barrels, you’ll end up at the appropriately named “Don’t Hurry” lounge. This is the perfect spot to sample the MANY flavors of Cruzan Rum and the bartenders will share with you their favorite recipes. And don’t forget to grab rum to take home! Travelers over 21 years of age can bring home 6 bottles of alcohol as long as one was made in the Virgin Islands. Price-wise, this is actually one of the best places to make your purchase and they’ll even box it up ready to check-in at the airport.  Of course, you’ll want a few bottles to enjoy while you’re here too!

Cruzan Rum Factory Tour St Croix

After learning everything there is to know about rum, take a ride up into the “rainforest” to the world-famous Domino Club to visit the “beer-drinking pigs”. It’s worth the trip just to sample some of beloved former owner Norma’s original mamawana which is a secret recipe of rum and spices that’s carefully aged. Sip it, shoot it or have it in a mixed drink … I love the “Mama Rosa” which is mamawana and ruby red grapefruit juice. Refreshing!

domino club st croix

Following the Domino Club, come down the hill and head west to one of the Frederiksted Beach Bars which is the perfect spot to lime for the rest of the day and watch the sunset into the Caribbean sea. If you’re lucky, you may even catch the fabled “green flash”.

st croix sunset cruise ship

Sleep in. Now that you’ve been properly indoctrinated into the rum culture here on St Croix, it’s time to hit the beach. Grab some snorkel gear and head out to the North Shore of St Croix and hit Cane Bay Beach . This popular beach is not only an awesome place to get in some excellent offshore snorkeling but it’s also the place to see the world-famous Cane Bay Wall.

cane bay beach snorkeling st croix

If you’re a certified diver, you can grab tanks and head out on a spectacular and easy shore dive that will have you peering over the underwater cliff into the abyss. Over the side of the wall, you’ll often encounter sea turtles, schools and schools of bright tropical fish, and the occasional reef shark looking to see if anyone has a lionfish treat for them.

After a late morning/early afternoon of beach time, walk across the street and grab lunch from The Landing . This funky little beach bar has some of the best food on the North Shore and a fantastic array of fruity, frosty cocktails at their walk-up bar.

If you’re up for some more activity following lunch, take a hike down to the Annaly Bay Tide Pools – there’s a trail from the Carambola Beach Resort public parking lot. The hike takes roughly an hour in and an hour out. You’ll go up and downhill each way. It’s not a killer hike but is a moderate one. So be sure to bring a backpack with water and wear sneakers or tevas. Once you are down to the beach landing, you’ll climb over some rocks to get into the pools – so flip-flops aren’t recommended. Be sure to make your way back at least an hour and a half before sunset to ensure you have plenty of light on your way back.

annaly bay tide pools st croix

Head back to your accommodations later in the afternoon to wash off the salt and sand and then treat yourself to a relaxing evening at one of Christiansted’s finer restaurants . St Croix has become a beacon on the culinary map developing some super start chefs.  Each April the island boasts a week of food-centric events, seminars and competitions with the St Croix Food & Wine Experience . It also attracts some renowned chefs from across the country who share their talents and passion for the art of eating.

Head out to the Eastern most point in the United States. If you’re an early riser, you can even try to catch the sunrise and be the first peeps in the US to feel the warmth of the sun on your face. From there you’ll see a little parking area and the entrance to the hiking trail down to Jacks & Isaacs Beach. This pristine white sand beach is surrounded by reef and coral heads and so has some of the best snorkeling on the island. There are no facilities so you’ll want to bring down a backpack with water, snacks, etc. to make a day of it. And don’t forget sunscreen!! I recommend bringing and wearing a rash guard to protect your back while snorkeling too. You can read about our fun family day a few years back at Jacks & Isaacs .

Beautiful Jack's & Isaac's Bay

Following the day exploring the beach – stop by Ziggy’s Libation station on your way back. This fun little gas station/bar/deli is a popular happy hour spot for locals. Take a break and play corn-hole or if you’re there at the right time, sign up for one of their famous “Dinners on the Deck” by the uber talented Chef Aaron.

The Libation Station at Ziggy's

You’ve explored both ends of St Croix and honed your snorkeling skills, so now it’s time to head out to Buck Island Reef National Monument ! Book a full day or a half-day trip out to this little gem that sits 2 miles off of St Croix’s North/East coast. In the 60’s this was a favorite spot of the Kennedy’s and so President John F. Kennedy designated it a National Monument to preserve it. Nowadays  it’s managed by the National Parks and this uninhabited island is actually less than 1/3 of the park – the rest is below sea level. To get there you must book your trip with one of the official concessioners licensed to take guests out to Buck Island. Tour operators will supply you with snorkel gear (unless you have your own to bring along) and instruction for newbies. You’ll spend about an hour or so exploring the underwater trail and reef on the east side of the island. This spot has some of the most diverse schools of fish and marine life in the Caribbean and is featured in 1,000 Places To See Before You Die – so don’t miss it! Full day trips on Big Beard’s Adventure Tours include a beach barbeque on a secluded beach back on St Croix just across from Buck Island.

Big Beard Adventure Tours Buck Island MJS Visions

Spend the morning in historic downtown Christiansted to get in a little shopping and explore St Croix’s history. This 18th Century Danish colonial town was once the capital of the Danish West Indies and is a beautiful example of neoclassic Danish architecture. The town itself is on the National Register of Historic places. Take a self-guided walking tour through the Christiansted historic district starting at Fort Christianvaern. Here you’ll find the National Park Service office and can pick up a map that will lead you to historic points of interest following your exploration of the fort. Throughout the district you’ll find shops that house local artisans and jewelers – you simply MUST bring home a St Croix bracelet, all the cool kids where them. For true. You’ll find plenty of treasures to bring home to friends and family and to remind you of your St Croix experience.

In the afternoon, wrap up your St Croix adventure with a magical riding tour with Cruzan Cowgirls Horse Riding Tours . Most rides head out from Rainbow Beach in Frederiksted. You’ll explore the beach and the rainforest while riding horses who have been lovingly rescued and rehabilitated by Jennifer and her family. Read more here! After your ride you can catch one more West End sunset with a cocktail and reminisce about your week.

jen-fox-beach

There are SO MANY things to do that I didn’t get to in this itinerary, but it’s a great first introduction to the island – so you’ll just have to plan another St Croix vacation to get to everything! Ready to explore? Plan your trip here.

And be sure to check out our St Croix Events Calendar to plan your time around some of our exciting island events.

ENJOY SIX EXCLUSIVE TASTINGS OF AUTHENTIC LOCAL CUISINE!

We really enjoyed our food tour of Christiansted. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history and cuisine of the Virgin Islands, and the choices of stops for sampling food and drink were all excellent choices.

Great tour! LD was delightful and full of local lore. We went to small, local establishments - places you might not go to unless you got a recommendation. The food was delicious! They recommend eating a light breakfast, if at all. Believe them! You will be full! Highly recommend.

This was by far one of the best 'experiences' I had on St. Croix. I felt really connected to the city after taking this food tour. Seeing where locals eat, and learning about the architecture of the buildings, make for the best morning.

My husband and I had a great time at the mixology class! Since we live on St. Croix, it's always good to find fun new things to do. I personally enjoyed getting to meet some new people and learn to make multiple cocktails featuring our local favorite Cruzan Rum.

This was one of the biggest highlights of our trip to St. Croix. The entire family enjoyed it. We were introduced to foods we had never heard of that are now our family favorites. Our tour guide, LD, was amazing too!

Anquanette was very knowledgeable and well spoken and shared much of the rich history and current culture on the tour. I truly gave us the flavor, pun intended, of the community and the island.

  • Beach Guide

Did you know... St. Croix is ringed by beaches of all shapes and sizes, some are long white sand stretches, others are small patches shaded by low sea grape trees and towering coconut palms. Some have smooth sandy bottoms ideal for swimming, and others have rock and coral-lined entries perfect for snorkeling! Did you know... St. Croix is the only Caribbean Island where a diver can: ●Dive a wall that drops over 13,000 feet ●Dive a reef that is the largest living reef of any Caribbean Island ●Dive five wrecks that are within 100 yards of each other ●Dive a pier

  • Weddings / Romance

DID YOU KNOW THAT... Many couples are opting to save the money (not to mention the stress and hard work) of a big wedding at home by escaping to a Caribbean island for a combination wedding/honeymoon. Upon their return, they can share the event by showing the video and photographs at an informal reception. All the islands are beautiful and, on some, weddings have become a major promotional tool. So why should you choose St. Croix above others?

  • Moving Here

DID YOU KNOW... In addition to it's long and rich multicultural history, friendly people, open spaces, the blue sea and near perfect year-round weather, there are a number of reasons to consider relocating to St Croix. Most importantly, the U.S. Virgin Islands, which includes St Croix, operate under U.S. law which is important in both business and personal matters.

This means mainland US companies do business here including retail stores such as K-Mart, Radio Shack, Office Max, McDonald's and Wendy's. Also U.S. financial services including a variety of U.S. mortgage, insurance and banking companies offer local service.  U.S. cellular phone companies including AT&T and Sprint, both operate here.

Arriving By Cruise Ship

The Ann E. Abramson Pier is named in honor of the Virgin Islands Public Works Commissioner who was responsible for much of the rejuvenation of the Frederiksted area. This is the pier where most of the large cruise ships dock, as well as military ships, submarines, and other naval vessels. From time to time, tall-ships especially from Denmark, can be seen here.

The dock itself has been a favorite diving place especially for viewing bright coral, sponges, and a multitude of fish life. A night dive should reveal the sea-horses unique to this pier. Visitors arriving at the pier often walk through the small town of Frederiksted and walk to the nearby beaches and beach club

Where To Eat & Drink In St. Croix

About St Croix's Restaurants and Food... Succulent clawless Caribbean lobster, with a tail rich in pure white meat. Fresh caught mahi mahi (which is a fish locally called Dolphin, but is not the porpoise!), served island style with pungent local spices. Today's catch of yellowfin tuna, broiled, baked, or perhaps with the chef's special Caribbean herb and spice mixture. Conch chowder for starters, key lime pie and Cruzan coffee for closers. And of course, aged Black Angus steaks for those who can travel but cannot go without! Dining on St. Croix is a magical whirl of gourmet chefs, local delicacies, open air seaside restaurants, moonlit nights, and no jackets required.

For a unique and fun food and cultural experience, enjoy  a guided food tasting and cultural walking tour with Virgin Islands Food Tours .Their foodie excursion through historic Downtown Christiansted is filled with history, fun and delicious local cuisine you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Paradise found! Although you can't eat atmosphere, you can drink it in! Some of the island's nicest restaurants are in historic courtyards, overlooking marinas, on the beach, in the finest resorts, and tucked away in places that say "call for directions." From beach bars to those establishments featured on national television, every meal is a highlight of your vacation. For local delights, stop at the food vans selling Roti, sort of a West Indian burrito, and Salt fish Pate, deep fried and great with a cold beer! Be sure to sample the West Indian Pig Roasts and buffets offered at the resorts! Major credit cards are accepted, and reservations are preferred. A word to the wise: ties and jackets are definitely not in fashion for the gentlemen; ladies, it's either casual or casual elegance.
