Most people spend a significant amount of time planning their dream vacations without even thinking about travel insurance.

When visiting a foreign destination, there is, unfortunately, a genuine possibility of falling ill, suffering from an accident, or running into unforeseen delays.

Travel agencies such as Orbitz offer customers the option of purchasing coverage when checking out to cover the above problems.

Why Use Orbitz Travel Insurance Over Another Company?

Orbitz logo on a white background

Launched in 2001, Orbitz is an online travel agency and provider of trip insurance based in Chicago, Illinois.

The site allows customers to browse through the different available travel insurance coverage policies and other non-insurance services.

In November 2010, Orbitz launched its mobile application, which also lets customers search and book flights, hotels, and rental cars from the convenience of a portable device.

Orbitz trip insurance offers versatile plan options and upgrades for travelers of all ages, including trip cancellations for any reason as well as missing or delayed baggage reimbursement, and medical coverage.

Orbitz Travel Insurance policies are underwritten by the National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh. Despite receiving negative reviews, the provider and its underwriter have earned good ratings from Moody’s, A.M. Best, and the Better Business Bureau.

This travel insurance review will summarize the provider’s insurance coverage plans, customer service, and reputation based on customer reviews.

Orbitz Travel Insurance Coverage & Plans

Orbitz offers Flight Cancellation Protection for domestic flights within the United States (excluding flights to Hawaii and Alaska).

Total Trip Protection coverage is only available for residents residing in the United States and District of Columbia, and it is offered to customers during checkout to protect their purchase. The fees for Orbitz’ Package Protection Plan and Flight Cancellation Plan depend on the total cost of the trip or airline ticket cost.

Travelers can also purchase a Vacation Waiver which allows them to change or cancel their trip once for any reason.

Orbitz Travel Insurance has several limitations and exclusions which may nullify claims. As a result, customers are advised to upgrade by purchasing optional coverage managed by Travel Guard and Aon Affinity Travel Practice for added peace of mind when traveling.

Coverage Options

  • Flight Cancellation/Interruption
  • Processing of cancellations or changes on a traveler’s behalf with travel providers including airline, rental car company, and hotel bookings
  • Cancellations for Any Reason
  • Vacation Waiver which can be used once for any reason
  • Loss, theft, or damage to baggage, travel documents or other possessions subject to limitations or exclusions
  • 24/7 Emergency assistance
  • Emergency medical expenses

Flight Cancellation Plan

Only domestic flights within the continental United States are covered under the Orbitz Flight Cancellation Plan. Under this plan, Orbitz refunds your flight in the form of travel credits with that particular airline. The credits can then be used to purchase a new flight with the same airline.

Orbitz refunds an amount equal to the change or cancellation fee charged by the airline at the time of redemption. The traveler is then charged the full price of the new flight, less the amount of the travel credits available. Travelers should be aware that the cost of the new flight may be more than the canceled flight, and they will be expected to pay the difference.

This plan can be purchased at checkout up to 24 hours after booking a flight. In some cases, if a flight is canceled within 24 hours, no penalty fees apply.

Package Protection Plan

Orbitz offers customers a Package Protection plan which can be purchased online up to 24 hours after booking a flight. Travelers are reimbursed up to the total trip costs due to cancellations for specific reasons as per the schedule of benefits. Trip interruptions, trip delays, and medical expenses are covered post-departure. Reimbursements are subject to exclusions and limitations. Orbitz also offers a Bedside Companion Benefit if a traveling companion is hospitalized ($100 per day).

Package Protection travel insurance can be canceled before the start of the trip up to 15 days after making a booking.

orbitz travel insurance

Vacation Waiver

Orbitz offers a Vacation Waiver which can be used once for each travel product listed and confirmed in the same itinerary. This waiver only covers change and cancellation fees and does not cover non-changeable flights.

Customers can change or cancel their package reservations before the scheduled start times. The Vacation Waiver covers all travelers listed and confirmed on the itinerary, and it can only be purchased during the booking process.

Orbitz Travel Insurance Costs

Typically, coverage for a trip that costs $5,000 ranges between $200 and $450 as travel insurance usually comes in at 4 to 8 percent of total expenses. Orbitz travel insurance may be less due to its low dollar limits and large amount of exclusions, but the final cost will depend on a number of different factors.

Most insurance providers consider the age of travelers, number of travelers, length of trip, pre-existing conditions, and type of coverage before calculating the coverage cost. Travelers over the age of 65 usually pay more, and some include minors at no extra charge.

Orbitz Travel insurance is offered during the booking process on the company’s mobile app or website. Orbitz doesn’t have an annual coverage plan, and single-trip coverage may only be purchased for the duration of travel. Coverage ends when the insured either arrives at the return destination, or seven days after the scheduled completion of the trip.

Customers have a 15-day trial period during which they may choose to cancel and receive a refund of the full premium.

Orbitz Travel Insurance Customer Reviews & Reputation

Negative customer reviews can cause significant damage to the reputation of any business. Orbitz has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since April 2001 and has an A+ rating despite several negative reviews. However, this rating is typical for many travel insurance providers.

Many of the criticisms of the company are related to customers not understanding policy limits, the claims process, or cancellation procedures. According to the BBB, Orbitz closed over 800 customer complaints in three years, 150 or more in the past twelve months. It bears mentioning that though this number is inordinately high for a travel insurance company, Orbitz is primarily a travel booking site.

If optional coverage is purchased from Travel Guard and Aon Affinity Travel Practice on the Orbitz website, customers should follow the claim filing process listed by either of these trip insurance providers. Consumers are advised to read reviews for Travel Guard and Aon Affinity Travel Practice before purchasing coverage from either of these trip insurance providers.

Potential Orbitz travel insurance customers should take the time to read the fine print on the policies, making sure they understand the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of coverage. This helps prevent misunderstandings later. Travelers should also read and understand the limitations and exclusions for the Orbitz Flight Cancellation Plan, Orbitz Package Protection, and the optional Vacation Waiver.

Orbitz Travel Insurance’s parent company, Orbitz, has a rating of just 0.9/10 on Trustpilot with one star. Reviewers mainly criticize the company’s booking process, but many also complain about not receiving a refund on nonrefundable tickets, which is to be expected. The ability to obtain reimbursement when changing or canceling a flight is one of the many reasons travelers should look into purchasing travel insurance.

Orbitz Travel Insurance Customer Assistance Services

Orbitz Travel Insurance provides 24/7 worldwide emergency assistance through Travel Guard and the company’s mobile application. The Package Protection Plan includes coverage for emergency medical expenses and travel accidents, which are subject to limitations and exclusions. Orbitz customers are encouraged to sign up for the free Orbitz instant rewards program and earn Orbucks.

One Orbuck is equivalent to one U.S. dollar, and they can be used for flights or hotel accommodations. Customers can download and use the free Orbitz mobile application for convenient non-insurance services such as hotel discounts, price comparisons, and secure bookings.

Orbitz strives to protect all customer data while giving purchasers an option to save their payment information for future bookings. All purchases are verified with a three or four-digit identification number for reference. Orbitz lets customers log into their Orbitz account by conveniently signing in with their Facebook username and password, but customers signing up for an account is not necessary to be able to book a trip.

Orbitz Financial Stability

The success of an insurance company is often determined by its financial strength, which indicates the ability of the company to honor customer claims. Several rating agencies provide free access to an insurer’s credit scores.

Moody’s Investor Services has been nationally recognized as a statistical rating institution by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.

Moody’s ratings of financial institutions help consumers determine the likelihood that their carrier can meet its claim payout obligations.

Orbitz Travel Insurance Plans are underwritten by the National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh. This underwriter has received a high-quality rating of A2 from Moody’s, which forecasts its ability to repay short-term debt. This rating affirms that the underwriter is a low credit risk and can honor its financial obligations to its customers.

A.M. Best also provides Financial Strength Ratings, and Orbitz has an A rating from A.M. Best, which should give policyholders peace of mind regarding any future valid claims.

There are plenty of smart ways to save money on your travel plans, but refusing to buy travel insurance isn't necessarily one of them. Not having travel insurance can mean being on the hook for exorbitant medical bills or costs for emergency transportation if you become sick or injured during your trip. You could also face significant financial losses if your trip is delayed or your bags are lost or stolen, and without travel insurance you won't have a third party to rely on for assistance.

Buying affordable travel insurance makes more sense than skipping this coverage altogether, so read on to find out which companies offer the cheapest plans and all the protections you can get for a low cost.

How We Chose the Cheapest Travel Insurance Companies

To determine the cheapest travel insurance companies, U.S. News created sample traveler profiles for three separate eight-day trips to different destinations (the Cayman Islands, Spain and California) at a range of price points ($6,500, $10,500 and $8,500, respectively). We used that information to get quotes for the cheapest option for 100% trip cancellation coverage for each trip. We then calculated the average cost of the trips.

The travel insurance companies that made our ranking have a high credit rating and offer the lowest average cost, outlined below. (Note: The sample average costs are not price quotes from U.S. News. To find a travel insurance price quote, use the "View plans" link to enter your trip details and find more information.)

Booking Travel With Orbitz – Everything You Need to Know [2023]

Table of Contents

Why use an ota, orbitz rewards, insider pricing, and credit cards, orbitz flights, orbitz hotels, orbitz vacation packages, orbitz activities, orbitz cruises, orbitz car rentals, orbitz mobile app, final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our  Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

There are a ton of online travel agencies ( OTAs) out there, each competing hard for your business. With such a saturated market, many of them try to offer something unique to attract customers.

For example, Priceline offers savings through simple bookings, while AmexTravel.com offers cardholder perks and fantastic customer service. Others, like Costco Travel , offer freebies for members. They each hope that by attracting business with specials, travelers will stay loyal to the platform for all of their travel booking needs.

What Orbitz offers is an in-house loyalty program, strong search functionality, regularly-published low prices, and occasional discounts. It also features a wide range of services, letting you book flights , hotels , vacation packages , activities , cruises , rental cars , and more.

In the grand scheme of things, Orbitz offers consistency. So if you choose to use an OTA, then they can be the best option, particularly when there isn’t a specific deal for what you want being offered elsewhere.

Let’s dive in and take a closer look at how to use Orbitz, how it compares to other OTAs, and cases when you might want to choose them over the competition.

When you’re booking travel for a particular hotel or flight, it often makes sense to book directly with the travel provider. If there are any issues such as cancellation, overbooking, or delay, dealing directly with the airline or hotel can make solving the problem easier.

When you book through an online travel agency, the actual travel provider may not be able to work with you directly to come up with a solution. Instead, you may have to go through the booking agent, which can cause some confusion when communicating back and forth.

One compelling reason to use an OTA is when you’re trying to put together a more complicated itinerary, especially when you’ll need to book a few different flight segments on a few different airlines.

Not all OTAs (or even airlines) make it easy to book a multi-city trip — for example, a trip where you leave New York and start in London, fly to Amsterdam, and head to Berlin before going home. This is something that Orbitz is particularly useful for, where it can help build a single itinerary with a carrier or alliance.

However, this benefit is made a little less valuable by the plethora of ultra-low-cost-carriers (LCCs) that have popped up lately. In the above example, for instance (New York-London-Amsterdam-Berlin-New York), you could pay a lot less by just booking a series of one-way segments on Norwegian Air Shuttle and Ryanair .

Rather than freely mixing and matching the lowest-priced one-way segments, Orbitz tries to stick with a single alliance where possible. Additionally, Google Flights has become a lot more capable over the past few years and makes it easy to search for and compare flights.

Bottom Line: These days, a better-use scenario for OTAs is vacation packages , where you can save a bit by purchasing airfare, hotel stays, and extras like rental cars or transportation all in 1 bundle. Be sure to check out our picks for the best credit card for vacation packages before making a purchase.

Orbitz offers its own loyalty program, meaning that you can triple-dip on rewards between Orbitz Orbucks, credit card rewards , and frequent flyer miles (you generally aren’t eligible for hotel loyalty points if you book through a third party). Before booking anything through Orbitz, you should sign up for an account.

Orbitz Rewards

This rewards system is relatively simple. Each travel purchase made through the site earns Orbucks. Each Orbuck is worth $1 and can be redeemed for hotel purchases with no blackout dates.

Any time you book travel, you’ll see an earning rate next to your itinerary. Typically, it’s an even 1% return on airline purchases and vacation packages , and 3% back on eligible hotels (or 5% on hotels if you book through the Orbitz app). In other words, if a flight costs $650, you’ll earn 6.5 Orbucks.

The next time you book a hotel through Orbitz while you’re logged in, you’ll have the option to apply your Orbucks balance to the purchase.

Insider Prices

Orbitz offers discounted member pricing on certain hotels, with discounts usually around 10%, but sometimes as high as 50% . When searching for hotels (more on that below), just look for the Insider Price marking.

Rewards Tiers

Orbitz offers 3 tiers of rewards with elite status benefits.

The first tier, Silver, is the most basic level and applies to everyone. You’ll reach Gold status after staying 4+ nights per year in hotels booked through Orbitz and Platinum status after 12+ nights per year.

Perks for all members include access to Insider Prices, Orbucks earning, and a low price guarantee. At the Gold level, you get access to a priority customer service line and perks at certain hotels, such as free in-room premium Wi-Fi or breakfast.

At the Platinum level, you’ll be eligible for upgrades at participating hotels (Orbitz Rewards VIP Hotels) and a reimbursement of $50 Orbucks if you pay for 2 or more checked bags on flights booked through Orbitz. You can also get an $78 reimbursement if you sign up for TSA PreCheck.

Orbitz rewards tiers

Just remember that you won’t earn hotel loyalty points, status, or receive status benefits when you book through a third party like Orbitz. You’ll have to decide whether hotel rewards or Orbitz Rewards are more valuable to you — if you are loyal to 1 hotel chain, that reward system is likely more worthwhile.

Orbitz Rewards Visa Card

Orbitz offers a branded credit card that earns rewards in the form of Orbucks.

The Orbitz Rewards Visa Card earns 8% to 10% back on hotels booked through Orbitz, 6% on flights, 5% on other Orbitz.com purchases, and 2% on everything else.

Orbitz Rewards Card Earnings

This is a generous card — the catch is that Orbucks can only be redeemed on hotel purchases through Orbitz. Most other rewards cards offer more flexible or more valuable points. Still, if you use Orbitz frequently, this card could make sense as a way to earn a lot of Orbucks quickly.

Bottom Line:  Orbitz Rewards is a substantial program; make sure to sign up before booking anything through the site.

Booking a flight on the platform is a fairly simple process, just like with most OTAs. Let’s take a look at how to search and book, and how to build a more complex itinerary.

To search for flights from its homepage, make sure to click the Flights tab. Enter your origin and destination city/airports, dates, number of passengers, and whether you’d like to search for lower prices on nearby dates.

If you click the “Advanced Options” link, you can choose whether you’d like to restrict the search to nonstops, as well as whether you want refundable fares, if you have a preferred airline, and what class you want. Once you’re ready, search and wait for results to load.

Results are typically displayed in price order, starting with the lowest. You’ll only see the outbound flight, but the price represents the entire round-trip. It displays flights from most low-cost carriers, so if you’re searching for a one-way or basic round-trip, chances are these flights will show up first.

Orbitz flight search results

If you have preferences for which airline you fly, the number of stops, or the time of day, you can use tools on the left side of the screen to filter results. You can also reorder the flights by departure or arrival time, duration, or highest price using a drop-down menu to the upper-right of the results.

Another great feature is that Orbitz displays amenities alongside flight results — icons to the left of the price tell you whether the flight is equipped with Wi-Fi, power outlets, or inflight entertainment (IFE).

You can also click on “Flight details and baggage fees” to learn about costs, as well as the type of plane and what meal service is available.

Keep in mind that to keep prices as low as possible, Orbitz will often book flights through the operating airline’s partners — for example, in the above search for a flight from ORD to LHR, Orbitz is showing a flight operated by American Airlines but booking it through British Airways .

That’s usually not an issue; just make sure to show up at the right terminal and consider this for frequent flyer mileage earning.

Making a Reservation

Once you’ve found an outbound flight you like, hit the pink “Select” button. The next screen shows you options for the return flight. Because the price on the first screen represented the total lowest-possible round-trip cost, most of these will show a cost of $0.00.

Orbitz return flight screen

As you scroll down, other flights may show additional costs due to timing, capacity, or whether they’re operated by a non-alliance carrier.

In this example, most return flights on Oneworld carriers are either no additional charge or just a few dollars. This is because the outbound flight was on American Airlines booked through British Airways.

However, when you scroll down, you’ll see that you can book on other carriers including Star Alliance . That would require the trip to be booked as 2 expensive one-ways, which would add a punishing $3,940+ to the overall cost.

Hot Tip:  Make sure to check the additional cost for your return flight! Usually, it’s $0, but just keep an eye on it.

Once you select the return flight, a dialogue box pops up asking if you’d like to book a hotel simultaneously, claiming that people booking flights and hotels together save an average of $193. If you’re interested in vacation packages , check out the section below.

If you don’t opt to book the hotel, the next screen displays your complete flight itinerary and offers a few different fare choices, such as flexible economy and business class. Select the fare you want and click “Book.”

On the next screen, enter passenger and payment details, then confirm to pay and book your flight.

Make sure that you’re signed in when you pay to earn Orbucks on the flight. Also, remember that Orbitz gives you 24 hours to cancel any flight . Most airlines and travel portals have to offer this according to U.S. law, but Orbitz is known for making the process easy.

Comparing Prices

Orbitz offers a “best price guarantee” on just about everything — for flights, if you find a lower price within 24 hours of booking, it will refund the difference. Placing a claim is relatively easy, but let’s see how likely it is that you’ll need to use it.

We searched a few different portals and websites for the same nonstop trip from Chicago to London on the same days but didn’t specify the airport, time of day, or airline. Here’s what we found:

*Priceline offered an “Express Deal” flight for $561.42, but this was an opaque booking — you wouldn’t know your airline, the number of stops, or the exact time of day until booking.

In this example, Priceline found virtually the least-expensive possible non-stop routing, remarkably consistent with the other online travel agencies and search engines — perhaps because this is such a busy route. When checking other routes, prices stayed consistent with the other OTAs.

Justfly.com, through Kayak , did manage to find a route that was about $4 cheaper by booking American Airlines flights through multiple Oneworld partners, though odds are good that it was either a glitch or a mistake.

We repeated the search from New York (JFK), where a few different airlines operate multiple daily flights to London, again restricting the search to nonstops. This time, prices were a little different depending on whether an OTA had access to low-cost carriers:

We can only assume that the Orbitz pricing for Norwegian was an error or glitch, as it was around $150 more than we could find that ticket anywhere else — the comparison is not only of the cheapest available options; it’s looking at the same exact flights.

This could be a case where a price guarantee claim would be effective, especially since it seems to be a mistake.

Bottom Line:  Generally, Orbitz offers the best price on flights. If you find a better price within 24 hours of booking, it will refund you the difference.

Before searching for hotels on the platform, you should make sure to either create or log in to an Orbitz account. This is because it offers Insider Price deals on some hotels that feature savings up to 10%. Also, some Orbitz VIP hotels offer elite status perks if you book through Orbitz and have elite status with Orbitz.

After logging in, head back to the home page and click the Hotels tab. Enter your city, check-in and check-out dates, the number of people staying, and the number of rooms you need. Then, hit “Search.”

By default, Orbitz sorts results in “recommended” order. You can find a breakdown of how it decides which hotels will be recommended on the website’s support section .

If you want, you can change the results to sort by distance from downtown, price, customer rating, Insider Prices, best deals, and more.

You can also use tools on the left-hand side to filter results by star rating, the price per night, neighborhood, amenities, property type, proximity to popular locations, and more. You can also search for a specific property by name.

Orbitz Hotel VIP Insider Price Icons

When browsing results, keep an eye out for a few different icons. A purple VIP circle signifies hotels where Orbitz Gold and Platinum members can get perks like room upgrades. If the price is highlighted in blue, that means it’s an Insider Price.

Booking a Room

Orbitz Hotel search results

Click the various results to see property details. When you find one you’d like to reserve, click on the price.

Immediately, you’ll see messages encouraging you to book quickly, with pop-ups reading things like “prices for your dates have been going up,” or “32 people are looking at this property!” Feel free to ignore these.

Either click the “Reserve” button or simply scroll down to see available rooms and rates. Pay attention to the “Options” column — if you click the top line, a pop-up appears with terms and conditions for your rate. Click “Reserve” next to the room and rate you want.

Enter contact and payment details and you’re pretty much set. Again, remember to double-check all rate terms and conditions before making the reservation to know the cancellation and refund policy. Orbitz also extends the window to submit a claim for its price guarantee up to 48 hours before check-in!

Hotel Pricing Side-by-Side

To compare prices between Orbitz and the competition, we searched for stays in London for a week in March and picked the Grosvenor Hotel, a property with an Insider Price available. Here’s how the total stacked up for 7 nights in a standard double room, including all fees and taxes:

Ultimately, booking direct was slightly cheaper in this instance because the hotel was having a sale. However, Orbitz was clearly cheaper than any other online travel agency. In a few other searches, this was generally the case — it even beats direct booking on a few occasions, as long as it was a hotel with an Insider Price.

Hotel Rewards

Remember that whenever you book a hotel through an online travel agency, you won’t collect rewards with the hotel’s loyalty program. You will, however, get Orbucks.

Bottom Line:  Orbitz Insider Prices offer great rates and discounts on hotel stays!

By booking vacation packages on Orbitz you can save even more money! Unlike the packages offered by Costco Travel , these only include a combination of flight, hotel, and rental car rather than activities or tours. One great benefit of booking a vacation package through Orbitz is that its price guarantee extends to 48 hours after booking!

Searching and Booking — Flight + Hotel

To search for a vacation package, click Vacation Packages on the home screen. Choose what you want to include in your package — flight, hotel, or rental car — and enter your departure city and destination, dates, and the number of people.

Orbitz Vacation Package Search

In this example, we looked for a Flight + Hotel package flying from New York to Rome.

Just like the results of the hotel search, Orbitz sorts vacation packages by recommendations. On the first screen, you’ll see hotel options with VIP and Insider Price hotels flagged.

Click the hotel you’re interested in. On the next screen, beneath the hotel’s details, you can see room options. Rooms included with the package’s base price say “+$0.00 per night,” while upgraded rooms cost extra.

Once you pick the room, you’re taken to a screen to pick outbound and return flights. The package price reflects the cheapest available “recommended” flight — in this case, a nonstop on Norwegian from Newark to Rome. Other flights might cost more, or in some cases less — these flights usually involve either more stops or inconvenient flight times.

On the next screen, you can add airport transportation and tickets to attractions, or you can proceed to payment.

In the above example, you save about $38 for booking the flight and hotel as a bundle. That’s not a huge amount, obviously, but depending on destination, hotel, time of year, and many other factors, you might be able to save a lot more.

Vacation package prices tend to vary across the different online travel agencies, with each having access to different hotel deals and perks. Unless you’re set on using 1 — for instance, if you value Orbucks — it would be worth checking out packages at a few different websites.

Bottom Line:  Orbitz vacation packages can offer savings by bundling a few purchases together, though the savings may not always be huge.

Orbitz allows customers to search for and book entertainment in the city that you’re visiting, just as you would search and book a flight. These activities can include anything from concert tickets to tours, or even food events.

Orbitz Activities

Searching and Booking

When looking for activities on Orbitz , simply enter the destination that you’re traveling to and your dates. You’ll then receive a list of all the activities happening within the city on those dates. From there you can filter by price, activity type, or enter a keyword for a specific activity you’re looking for.

Once you’ve selected your activity you’ll receive a list of available dates and times for you to choose from, along with highlights and reviews of that activity.

When you find a date and time that works well for you, simply click “Book,” finalize your payment details, and you’re done! Easy as that!

Orbitz offers perks and extras on certain cruises, like many other online travel agencies. Prices are often consistent across OTAs and booking directly, but Orbitz occasionally offers sales with modest discounts.

To search for cruises, hit the Cruise button on the home page, then select a destination region and departure month — that’s it. On the results page, you can use filters to narrow down what you’re looking for: departure port, length, cruise line, and even specific ship.

When you pick a cruise, you’ll have a choice of extras, when available. For example, on the below cruise you can pick between a free third and fourth guest, free dinner or drinks, credits to use onboard, and more.

Orbitz Cruise Extras

We compared the above cruise to other booking sites and prices were all identical — except for Orbitz, which offered $40 off. While that’s a small amount compared to the $1,498 total, it’s still a savings!

Bottom Line:  While prices are generally consistent across OTAs and cruise websites, Orbitz occasionally manages to offer a discount. Keep an eye out for included perks, too! Curious to learn about other resources that help you find cheap cruises? Check out our post on the best websites to book cruises !

Orbitz’s car rental options are fairly consistent with most other online travel agencies . Although most rentals are available at the same price that other OTAs offer, Insider Prices offer discounts on a few different classes of car.

Orbitz Car Rental

Enter your location, choose pick-up and drop-off dates and times, select any preferences you have, and click “Search.”

Scroll through the cars, using filters on the left as needed. Orbitz offers occasional Insider Prices on rental cars, so keep an eye out for the blue highlighted prices.

Once you’ve found the class of car you want from the rental agency of your choice, click the price to make the reservation. On the next screen, select any add-ons or accessories you want, then click “Reserve.”

Hot Tip:  The Chase Sapphire Preferred ® card is a credit card with primary rental car insurance ! Just use your card to pay, and decline the rental company’s collision damage.

Enter contact details, payment information (if prompted), and select whether you want collision protection. That’s it!

Rental car prices tend to stay consistent across OTAs — the exception is Costco Travel, which has negotiated group rates and discounts (similar to AAA ) and automatically applies anything available. The downside to Costco Travel is that it only included 4 rental companies.

In head-to-head comparisons, Orbitz offered the same prices as other portals like AmexTravel.com. The exception was at Budget , where Insider Prices were available. Across the board, rentals from Budget were $2 to $5 cheaper per day than at other OTAs.

Bottom Line:  Orbitz offers a few discounts on rental cars, but for the most part prices are the same as anywhere else. Need more rental car resources? We’ve got you covered! Have a look at our best websites for finding cheap car rentals .

Orbitz App

With the Orbitz app, you can book travel, get mobile exclusive deals, and track flights and your overall itinerary, all from your smartphone! The Orbitz travel app is available on iOS and Android .

In addition to the discounts and deals you can score through the Orbitz app, one of the best features is trip management . From the app, you can access your itinerary and receive instant trip updates, including gate changes and even baggage carousel numbers.

Orbitz offers some decent deals on travel, as well as a fairly robust rewards program and a very handy 24-hour free cancellation policy on flight bookings . Thanks to its price guarantee, you can always get the difference refunded if you find a lower price elsewhere within 24 hours of booking!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is orbitz.

Orbitz is an online travel agency (OTA) that you can use to book flights, hotels, and much more.

Can you change your flight with Orbitz?

That depends on what rate you choose — Orbitz offers both discount and flexible fares for most flights. If you pay more for a flexible fare, you can likely change your flight without penalty.

Which is better, Orbitz or Expedia?

Orbitz is part of the Expedia Group, so you’re likely to get similar results when searching on each platform. But always compare and contrast prices before finalizing your booking.

When does Orbitz charge your card?

That depends — for flights, right away. For hotels, cruises, and more, it depends on the rate you book — make sure to read terms and conditions to see whether the booking is prepaid or not.

How does Orbitz work?

Orbitz works by booking specific travel through airlines and hotels. It also negotiates certain deals or group rates that it then passes along to customers.

Allianz Travel Insurance Global Assistance is a prominent leader in the travel insurance space that has been around in some form since 1890. Allianz offers a variety of travel insurance plans that can suit your individual needs. Read on to learn more about Allianz.

Allianz is one of the leaders in the travel insurance industry, included in our guide on the best international travel insurance . With 10 plans split between single trip, annual, and rental car insurance, Allianz has its bases covered. It also provides specific insurance for particular needs, such as annual policies for business travelers and sports equipment coverage for athletes.

While Allianz is one of the best international travel insurance providers, it also has great CFAR coverage for its Prime and Premier single-trip plans, covering 80% of nonrefundable travel expenses when most policies usually offer 75%. It's also great for families, with coverage for kids 17 and under in its OneTrip Prime and Premier plan.

Allianz is well-reviewed among customers, receiving an average of 4.3 stars out of five across nearly 70,000 reviews on Trustpilot. Its Better Business Bureau page fares a little worse, receiving 3.64 stars out of five across 1,600 reviews. Positive reviews mentioned an easy and quick claims process with a responsive customer service team. However, negative reviews often mentioned difficulty specifically with claims for ticketed events.

Allianz also has a highly rated mobile app called Allyz TravelSmart through which you can contact customer service, view your plan, and file a claim. It received an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars on the Google Play store across over 2,600 reviews and 4.8 out of five stars from over 22,000 reviews on the Apple app store.

Coverage Options Offered by Allianz

Allianz travel insurance offers different policies, grouped under two types: single trips and annual multi-trip insurance .

The company's travel insurance policies can include the following coverage types:

  • Trip interruption coverage , which can help recoup costs if you leave a trip early.
  • Travel delay , which can cover some costs if you need additional accommodations due to a delay in travel.
  • Emergency medical transportation , which covers transportation to a hospital for eligible illnesses and injuries.
  • Emergency medical expenses in case of a dental or medical emergency.
  • Baggage delay , which can cover some costs if you need to purchase required items due to your bags being delayed by a certain period of time. Must have receipts for this.
  • Baggage loss or damage , which can help recoup some costs if your bag is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • Epidemic coverage endorsement, which can help recoup costs if you must cancel a nonrefundable trip due to an epidemic. It's important to note that there may be limitations and this isn't an option everywhere.
  • Travel accident coverage , which can cover costs related to an injury that results in loss of vision, your hands or feet, as well as loss of life.
  • Support via a 24-hour hotline

Single-Trip Plans

The general budget option is OneTrip Basic, which can offer various protections should something happen, if you file a claim for a qualified reason.

One step up is the OneTrip Prime policy, one of the most popular plans Allianz offers. It has higher coverage limits than the Basic plan, along with some additional perks.

A more complete option is OneTrip Premier, which includes more comprehensive protections should you need them. This policy is for more extensive, longer trips and includes extras like SmartBenefits—which up to $100 per day for a covered travel or baggage delay with no receipts necessary, only proof of delay—and sports equipment loss coverage.

The coverage limits available vary by plan. Here's an overview of what each policy covers:

Other OneTrip Premier benefits not mentioned in the table above include:

  • Sports Traveler, reimbursement up to $1,000 in the event of a missed sports event for a qualified reason
  • Sports Equipment Loss, reimbursement up to $1,000 to cover damaged or lost sports equipment
  • Sports Equipment Rental, reimbursement up to $1,000 for the cost to rent sports equipment if your equipment is damaged or lost
  • Vehicle return, up to $750 reimbursement to return your vehicle to your home if you can't drive it for a qualified reason
  • Adventure and sports exclusions changes, which allows you to waive some losses in the event you participate in high-risk activities like free diving at 30 ft, scuba diving at 100 ft, caving, and more

There are two additional single-trip plans from Allianz that offer more specialized coverage: One Trip Emergency and OneTrip Cancellation Plus.

OneTrip Emergency Medical

OneTrip Emergency Medical is a budget option that exclusively offers post-departure benefits to cover you while you're on your trip. As such, the plan doesn't include pre-departure benefits such as trip cancellation or interruption.

  • Travel delay, up to $200 per day per person for a maximum of $1000 for delays of six hours and beyond
  • Travel accident coverage, up to $10,000
  • Emergency medical transportation, up to $250,000
  • Emergency medical expenses, up to $50,000 though dental emergencies have a maximum of $750
  • Baggage delay, up to $750 with a delay of 12 hours or more
  • Baggage loss or damage, up to $2000
  • Epidemic coverage endorsement
  • Concierge services included

OneTrip Cancellation Plus

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus policy by Allianz is its economical back-to-basics option that can recoup costs in the event of a travel delay, interruption, or cancellation for a qualified reason. This policy includes:

  • Travel interruption coverage, up to $5,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000
  • Travel delay, up to $150 with delays of six hours and beyond

Multi-Trip Plans

The aforementioned policies are for single trips, but with Allianz travel insurance it's possible to get an annual/multi-trip policy.

The starter annual plan is the AllTrips Basic policy which includes the most basic coverage, and it excludes both trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage.

The AllTrips Prime policy is geared toward travelers who take a minimum of three trips each year and comes with additional coverage compared to the basic plan.

Another annual plan is the AllTrips Premier policy, which is geared toward frequent travelers and includes higher coverage limits and choices.

AllTrips Executive

Additionally, there's the AllTrips Executive policy, which may be a good fit if you're a frequent business traveler. Under this plan, personal travel is also covered. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500, or $10,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500 or $10,000
  • Travel delay, with a daily limit of $200 up to $1,600 for delays of six hours and beyond
  • Travel accident coverage, up to $50,000
  • Baggage delay, up to $1,000 with a delay of 12 hours or more
  • Baggage loss or damage, up to $1,000
  • Rental car damage and theft coverage, up to $45,000
  • Business equipment coverage, up to $1,000 in the event your business equipment gets lost or damaged
  • Business equipment rental coverage, up to $1,000 in the event you need to rent business equipment due to loss, damage, or theft
  • Change fee coverage, up to $500 to recoup costs of changing a ticket for a qualified reason
  • Loyalty program redeposit fee coverage, up to $500 to recover fees lost due to getting loyalty points back after a canceled trip
  • Pre-existing condition coverage available when purchased within 15 days of first trip deposit

Additional Coverage Offered by Allianz

Aside from the travel insurance policies from Allianz listed above that help travelers prepare for interruptions and cancellations, there are additional add-ons that can cover more.

OneTrip Rental Car Protector

If you're looking for rental car coverage, Allianz offers the OneTrip Rental Car Protector policy for $11 per day. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $1,000
  • Collision damage waiver, up to $50,000 which helps cover costs in the event your rental car is damaged in an accident or stolen

On top of the rental car coverage plan, with the OneTrip Prime plan, there's an optional upgrade to get Required to Work coverage. If there is a work-related emergency and you need to cancel for a qualified reason, this coverage can help recover expenses.

Cancel For Any Reason

An optional upgrade for OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier, Allianz cancel for any reason policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs when canceling a trip for any reason. Allianz stands out compared to the best CFAR travel insurance as most policies only offer 75% coverage.

What's Not Included with Allianz Travel Insurance?

Allianz travel insurance covers the basics and more and has some high-risk activity exclusions in the OneTrip Premier plan. Aside from that, Allianz travel insurance excludes the following:

  • Acts of violence, such as war, terrorism, and civil unrest
  • Risky adventure sports
  • Unexpected natural disasters (OneTrip Premier allows cancellation due to hurricane warnings)
  • Any travel alerts or government regulations and more

If you're interested in coverage for activities like scuba diving, skiing, and more, consider World Nomads, which covers more than 200 activities.

Allianz Travel Insurance Cost

Allianz single trip travel insurance estimates.

How much travel insurance costs with Allianz will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of policy you purchase. To get a quote with Allianz, you'll need to provide the following:

  • Your destination
  • Travel dates
  • The state you live in
  • The total cost of the trip

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $102 for OneTrip Basic
  • $151 for OneTrip Prime
  • $184 for OneTrip Premier

A 30-year-old traveler from California is heading to Japan for two weeks, costing $4,000. The Allianz travel insurance quotes are:

  • $153 for OneTrip Basic
  • $195 for OneTrip Prime
  • $270 for OneTrip Premier

A couple of 65-years of age looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $298 for OneTrip Basic (total for two travelers)
  • $400 for OneTrip Prime (total for two travelers)
  • $540 for OneTrip Premier (total for two travelers)

Allianz travel insurance premiums generally stack up favorably against the average cost of travel insurance  which is $248 per trip, but again, the specifics of your trip will largely determine how much you'll pay to insure it.

Allianz Annual Multi-Trip Estimates

To receive a quote on Allianz annual plans, you don't need nearly as much information. You just need the following:

  • Insurance start date
  • Your state of residence

A 30-year-old New York resident looking for travel insurance will pay the following prices for annual travel insurance with Allianz:

  • Allianz Basic: $125
  • Allianz Premier: $249
  • Allianz Executive: $459

A 60-year-old couple from Texas will pay the following:

  • Allianz Basic: $63 per traveler, $126 total
  • Allianz Premier: $217.50 per traveler, $435 total
  • Allianz Executive: $485 per traveler, $970 total

You'll need to select the plan and include your email or policy number as well as your departure date.

See how Allianz stacks up against the competition.

Allianz Travel Insurance vs. AXA Travel Insurance

Competitor AXA travel insurance covers 75% of your nonrefundable costs if you choose to cancel, for any reason (as the name suggests) if you choose that as an upgrade and buy it two weeks before your first trip deposit. Allianz's CFAR policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs.

That said, if we look at the travel insurance quotes based on a 30-year-old traveler from California going to Japan in the first two weeks of October paying a total of $4,000 for the trip, AXA travel insurance is more affordable. It's $97 for its Silver plan, which covers 100% trip cancellation and interruption. Compare this to $153 for the OneTrip Basic Plan through Allianz.

Read our AXA travel insurance review here.

Allianz Travel Insurance  vs. HTH Travel Insurance

Allianz is a good travel insurance option if you're looking for a variety of customized choices. Another competitor, HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance , has three trip protection options.

TripProtector Economy is HTH's budget option and may be a good fit if you're looking for higher medical coverage limits. This policy covers up to $75,000 in accident and sick benefits and $500 in dental benefits.

Plus, the policy covers up to $500,000 for an emergency evacuation. The OneTrip Basic policy from Allianz covers the same dental benefits but offers just $10,000 in medical expenses.

Read our HTH travel insurance review here.

Allianz vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

A travel insurance policy can offer robust protections, but if you're looking for something basic for trip interruption or cancellation and rental car coverage, check your travel rewards credit card. If you experience illness, weather, or cancellations that affect your trip, you may be able to recoup costs.

Credit card travel insurance coverage may be a good fit for short trips where you don't have a ton of upfront prepaid costs. However, if you're going to be away for a while, have many prepaid expenses, and are concerned about medical coverage, traditional travel insurance may be your best bet.

Allianz Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Allianz is a reputable and well-established travel insurance provider. The company offers various travel insurance policies for individual trips as well as annual plans. Coverage options may include trip interruption, trip cancellation, trip delay, emergency medical, and more. The company has mixed reviews from consumers but has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Nearly all travel insurance policies offered by Allianz cover COVID-19, aside from the OneTrip Rental Car Protector Plan. Through the Allianz Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, policyholders receive additional protections if they need to cancel a trip due to COVID. Unfortunately, while it's available in most plans it's not available in all jurisdictions, so be sure to read the fine print.

While the best plan is one best suited to your needs, Allianz's OneTrip Premier is the most robust policy, with high cancellation and interruption coverage. Additionally, kids 17 and under are included in coverage. This policy also includes unique benefits for athletes and adventurers thanks to sports equipment coverage.

If you need to file a claim, Allianz may require proof of incident in order to receive benefits. In cases of medical issues, you may need to provide a medical receipt or document. In other cases, you may need to provide other documentation for trip cancellation or trip interruption such as a death certificate, police report, or employment letter.

Allianz doesn't cover missed flights exactly but can help cover costs due to trip delays depending on your policy. So if you missed a connecting flight, you may be able to receive funds to recoup costs related to accommodations and transportation.

Reversing a decision from a circuit court, the Arkansas Supreme Court held last month that a group of online travel companies (“OTCs”), including Hotels.com, Expedia, and Orbitz, were not liable for state and local gross receipts and tourism taxes (together, the “hotel taxes”), penalties, and attorneys’ fees and costs totaling over $45 million because the OTCs were not providing or furnishing accommodations to transient guests. The decision ended a nearly 15-year legal dispute between OTCs and government agencies in Arkansas.  Hotels.com LP v. Pine Bluff Adver. & Promotion Comm’n , No. CV-23-416 (Ark. 2024).

Facts : Government agencies and the state of Arkansas brought a declaratory judgment action (which was granted class certification) against OTCs seeking more than 22 years’ worth of unpaid hotel taxes. The hotel taxes applied to entities furnishing or providing accommodations to transient guests. The circuit court found that, under the plain language of the relevant statutes, the OTCs were “provider[s] of accommodations to [] transient guest[s]” and, thus, were entities subject to taxation under the hotel taxes.

The legislature made amendments in 2019 (after the years at issue in the case) which applied the hotel taxes to “accommodations intermediaries.”

Decision : The Arkansas Supreme Court reversed the circuit court, finding that the OTCs were not taxable entities within the meaning of the hotel taxes. The Court found that there was ambiguity as to whether the OTCs were “any other provider of accommodations” and applied canons of statutory construction to determine the legislature’s intent.

First, the Court found that the OTCs were not expressly listed as entities subject to the hotel taxes, and that the circuit court’s conclusion that the phrase “any other provider of accommodations” encompassed OTCs was contrary to the doctrine of  ejusdem generis , “which provides that when general words follow specific words in a statutory enunciation, the general words are construed to embrace only objects similar in nature to those objects enumerated by the preceding specific words.” The Court found that OTCs do not “own, operate, or manage lodging establishments” but rather are “accommodations intermediaries.”

Further, the fact that the statutes were amended in 2019 to include “accommodations intermediaries” as taxable entities was compelling and supported the OTCs’ construction. The Court found that the amendment to include intermediaries subject to tax demonstrated that the intermediaries were “newly subject to the taxes.” If intermediaries were already subject to tax under the prior law, there would have been no need for the amendment, and legislative action is presumed to affect change: “the legislature will not be presumed to have done a vain and useless thing.”

Finally, the Court’s interpretation was consistent with the Department of Finance and Administration (“DF&A”) understanding of the law before and after the 2019 amendments. The DF&A’s 2019 legislative-impact statement observed that the amendments “‘modif[y] existing law to include ‘accommodations intermediary’ as an entity furnishing, making available for, or otherwise arranging for the sale or use of a room[.]’”

Relying on the canons of statutory construction, the Court found that the legislative intent reflected that the OTCs were not subject to the hotel taxes prior to the 2019 amendments. “In this instance, the OTCs are online technology companies that facilitate reservations between travelers and lodging establishments that supply the rooms. This service does not fit within the plain language of ‘renting, leasing, or otherwise furnishing’ rooms.”

Take Away:  Where language in a statute is susceptible to more than one reasonable interpretation, it is ambiguous, and courts will look to the legislative intent to interpret the statute. Where, as in this case, amendments to a statute add a class of entities to be subject to tax under the new law, courts will likely determine that under the prior law, such entities were not subject to tax because legislatures are presumed to have knowledge of current law, and any amendments are meant to affect a change in law. If the original statute applied to OTCs, there would have been no need for the 2019 amendment.

Should I book a cruise online? Here's what to know.

orbitz travel insurance

  • Travelers can book cruises online through the cruise line or third-party sites.
  • Booking online offers convenience, but there can be some drawbacks.
  • Travelers who need help with their booking may have to contact the cruise line or third-party site.

Travelers can buy almost anything they need for a cruise online, from flip-flops to sunscreen to the trip itself.

Many travelers book cruises through travel agents, but that’s not necessarily the right move for everyone. “Some people don't want to deal with people,” said Joanna Kuther, a New York City-based travel agent and owner of Port Side Travel Consultants. “They want to go online. They don't want to have one conversation.”

But with seemingly endless search results and websites vying for prospective guests’ attention in ads, the experience can be overwhelming. And while booking online offers convenience, there can be some drawbacks.

What are the best websites to book a cruise online?

When booking online, Kuther recommended going directly through the cruise line – if you know which one you want to sail with.

Travelers can easily browse itineraries, the line’s ships and their layouts, and other add-ons and promotions offered. If customers reserve other aspects of their trip, like flights, directly through the line, they will also have greater protection in the event of disruptions.

Cruise booking tips: There's more to it than picking your travel dates

“So if there's a cancellation or a delay, it's their job to get you to that ship,” Kuther said. “That's their commitment.” However, she noted that travelers may not have as many choices as when booking their flights themselves. (Cruise lines often have in-house vacation planners who are familiar with the brand.)

Travelers can book cruises via third-party sites as well and may be able to find deals doing so. Booking.com introduced a cruise option late last year, allowing travelers to book sailings, flights and hotels in one place. Other sites like Expedia and Orbitz also offer the category, and there are cruise-specific sites as well like Cruisebound.com and Cruise.com.

Those can also offer a comprehensive way to see what cruises are out there. Brandon O. Smith, who runs the YouTube channel The Weekend Cruiser , said Vacations To Go’s search function is particularly good. Many travelers also like Costco Travel because it’s “kind of built into their ecosystem,” he added.

Travelers booking through online travel agencies may have to pay fees that cruise lines do not charge, however, Smith said.

What if I need help with my booking?

Customers who book online on their own may have to contact the cruise line or third-party site when they have questions or issues, and the customer representative’s familiarity with the kind of trip they’re taking might vary. “And I think that's one of the big shortcomings,” Smith said.

Some travelers who have used third-party booking sites have had to jump through hoops to get help when their plans have gone awry.

Should first-time cruisers book a cruise online?

There is a wide range of lines and ships that cater to different types of vacations.

( click here for USA TODAY’s cruise line guide).

Smith recommended new cruisers work with a travel agent who can help them determine what kind of voyage is right for them. “Word of mouth is a great way to find people, and finding people who know your style of cruising,” he said. “So, if you're a family of five, you want to find somebody that's familiar with looking for larger families.”

If a traveler is looking for highly personalized advice, he said, “You're not going to get that through an online booking tool.”
