Ragged Elks Trek

This "Photo Stream" is a repository of miscellaneous latest photos mostly from around where I live in Ridgway at the foot of the San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado.

3 Days In the Grenadiers

Hungry for a desert adventure, in mid-April I headed to the canyons west of Grand Junction in the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness, an area I'd never visited before, for a 36-mile loop trek going down Knowles Canyon, along the Colorado River, then up Mee Canyon. This was a fantastic but strenuous trek through seriously awesome canyon country.

Over the Rockies

Whenever we fly from Denver to Montrose (or vice versa) I always try to reserve a window seat on the north side of the plane since you get wonderful views looking right down at the Elk Mountains, Gore Range, and Front Range. The timing was great with this flight as we flew over the mountains right as the sun was setting! So of course I was snapping away with glee. It's always fun to see so many recognizable peaks and valleys from an aerial perspective.

Winter in Tyrol: In Black & White

As 2023 comes to an end, instead of writing a typical "year in review" post I thought I'd do something a little different - I've started my own first-annual one-man photo competition with an arbitrary set of award categories! Let's see which photos won in 2023!

Waiting for Winter

I don't normally toot my own horn when my photos are published in books or calendars, but I'm pretty thrilled about this one!

Ring of Fire over the Valley of the Gods

Last week in mid-July I did a pleasant 3-day solo backpack loop through the Uncompahgre Wilderness above and east of the town of Ouray, Colorado. This is a favorite trek I've done numerous times before but this time I varied my camping destinations and did a bit of exploring along the way, and I also had a notable encounter with the local wildlife!

Sneffels Summertime

At the beginning of July I spent a pleasant evening and morning on a high ridge in the Sneffels Range with a wonderful view facing my favorite mountain: Mount Sneffels.

July Gallery Showing at 610 Arts Collective

In late May during this spring of unusually stormy weather here in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, I finally had a clear weather window to go for a more ambitious high-altitude photo mission. I've had a particular photo idea of Wilson Peak in mind for several years and now would be a good time to go for that!

I'm really glad to hear that. There was a time not long ago when something of this nature was out of my league. But I let myself dream and I read the reports here on Summitpost. So you can totally do it if you want to bad enough.

Nice to see a trip in there! We also had some rain, and ultimately a night out on slabs unable to find our bivy sacks...at first light we saw they were just 100 feet directly below (doh!). Holy cow that was 11 years ago :p. Good on yall.

gimpilator - Nov 26, 2013 1:39 pm - Hasn't voted

Thanks Michael. I'm just curious. Did you do the complete NE buttress? I've heard that's an excellent route. We saw two guys coming up it, mostly simul climbing. They actually passed us and made it to the summit first.

mvs - Dec 1, 2013 5:45 pm - Voted 10/10

First and foremost, I love this TR. It sounds like an fantastic trip. The photos and route decription are excellent. For those who are interested in reading more about this trip, Greg Slayden gives an account at the following link: http://www.peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=343607 One thing currently not mentioned in the TR but which I think is awesome: With his successful summit of Goode Mountain, Dave Covill became the first person to reach the highest point in every National Park located within the contiguous USA. A whopping 49 contiguous USA National Park Highpoints, not including the others he had already summited in Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. Virgin Islands. Yowsers!

gimpilator - Nov 26, 2013 1:30 pm - Hasn't voted

Thanks for the link! And yes, Dave Coville's accomplishment is a tremendous feat. I count myself privileged to have had the opportunity to congratulate him in person.

Part of the book series: Montology ((M,volume 2))

Mountain studies has come a long way over the past 200 years from sectoral studies of mountains to a comprehensive study of mountain socio-ecological systems. Currently, the concept of montology has a great influence on mountain research as a holistic, integrative, and transdisciplinary science of mountains. Current mountain studies must face up to the challenges of the twenty-first century, which requires both a critical examination of its own disciplinary history (decolonizing mountain studies), inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation, and multimethodological approaches.
