Fall is here, the seasonal cool-down that truly provides excitement and an abundance of opportunities for live music fans to see their favorite performers. This fall is no exception.

In fact, this year is likely the most abundant fall music season since before the pandemic, with artists from every genre imaginable and every generation making a tour stop in the city. Unlike the summer music season, which often focuses on major stadium and arena touring acts, the fall season allows local, emerging and larger acts to mingle on our bigger and smaller stages.

CHAI: Don’t let their charming name and pink aesthetics fool you. Japanese band CHAI is a formidable group making genre-bending new classics. Blending elements of experimental pop, dance and punk, the musicians of CHAI have set themselves apart by not being afraid to carve out a brand of music that pushes against — rather than conforms to — expectations. On their newest self-titled record, released this month, CHAI has incorporated more elements of funk, post-punk and mutant disco on tracks like “NEO KAWAII, K?” and “PARA PARA” proving this four-piece is never afraid to surprise and delight listeners. 8 p.m. Oct. 2 at Thalia Hall, 1807 S. Allport St.; tickets $25-$270 (ages 17+) at ticketweb.com

Slowdive: In 2017, Slowdive effortlessly returned to the music scene after a 22-year hiatus with a self-titled record featuring updated touches to their signature ambient, dream-pop sound. Now, after another long break, the band has released their latest record, “everything is alive.” Experimental and shimmery, this album packs a lush and enigmatic punch. Don’t take their latest releases and live shows for granted. Who knows when this influential band will be back in town? 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Riviera Theatre, 4746 N. Racine Ave.; tickets $67-$223 at ticketmaster.com

Jessie Ware performs at the Vic in Chicago on April 30, 2018.

Jessie Ware: Pre-pandemic, British vocalist Jessie Ware was more known for her slow, sometimes somber-sounding but always romance-fueled ballads. Of course, longtime fans knew this downtempo sound was not the total embodiment of her musical background. But very rarely did Ware step outside of those boundaries. Thankfully, the pandemic saw Ware dramatically shift into sights and sounds more reminiscent of her underground and dance-oriented origins. The one-two punch of her masterful albums, “What’s Your Pleasure?” and “That! Feels Good!,” proves Ware has much more up her sleeves. In the case of her latest album, that means house, disco and lots of upbeat sounds to keep audiences moving. 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at Vic Theater, 3145 N. Sheffield Ave.; $122-$394; ticketmaster.com

Yeule: Although Singaporean singer-songwriter and producer Nat Cmiel, who performs as Yeule, has released numerous solo albums, it was her 2022 release, “Glitch Princess,” that proved to be her breakthrough. While her music is often classified as pop, Yeule traverses numerous underground aesthetics and sounds, including seapunk and witch house. At its core, Yeule’s sound is raw, melodic and futuristic, despite its sometimes-abrasive outer essence. This month, she released her latest album, “softscars,” which features the artist’s light and gentle vocals paired more heavily with alternative and indie rock instrumentation. 8 p.m. Oct. 10 at Metro, 3730 N. Clark St.; tickets $26-$31 (ages 18+) at metrochicago.com

Reneé Rapp and Alexander 23: Actress and Broadway star Reneé Rapp took a risk by leaving her successful Max television show, “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” to embark on a solo career. But her efforts were not futile. Rapp had already proved her songwriting chops with the release of her debut EP, “Everything to Everyone,” which featured a number of tracks that went viral on TikTok. And then there’s that whole thing about being the star of the Broadway show “Mean Girls: The Musical” as a teenager. Powerhouse vocals and charismatic showmanship peppered with a signature Gen Z attitude have made Rapp successful at an early age, and it is those same attributes that have made her debut album, “Snow Angel,” a success. Catch her here in all of her pop glory. Deerfield native Alexander 23, who has done production work for some of Rapp’s music, opens. 8 p.m. Oct. 11 at Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom, 1106 W. Lawrence Ave.; tickets $89 (17+) at livenation.com

Raphael Saadiq at the 2018 Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago's Union Park.

Raphael Saadiq and Tony! Toni! Toné!: The music world post-pandemic has been a perfect time for beloved acts of the distant and near-past to reunite. Tony! Toni! Toné! is no exception. The popular ’90s R&B and new jack swing group is set to embark on its first tour in more than 25 years. The event also marks the 30th anniversary of their third album, “Sons of Soul,” which featured crossover hits like “Anniversary” and “(Lay Your Head On My) Pillow.” Band member Raphael Saadiq — a formidable performer and producer in his own right — will also hit the stage both for his own works (from his solo career and his collaborations with groups like Lucy Pearl) and as a part of Tony! Toni! Toné!. Longtime fans should not miss this seemingly once-in-a-lifetime experience. 8 p.m. Oct. 12 at The Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State St.; tickets $63-$250 at ticketmaster.com

Victoria Monét: After more than a decade of success in the background crafting songs for other artists like Fifth Harmony and, most notably, Ariana Grande, Victoria Monét is ready to step out of the shadows. Her emergence as a dynamic solo artist of her own began in 2020 with the release of her masterpiece EP, titled “Jaguar.” Blending elements of groove-heavy contemporary R&B with effervescent pop, Monet proved the most interesting artists are always willing to craft something that pushes against the mainstream sounds of the day. On her debut solo album, “Jaguar II,” Monét continues to experiment, this time adding elements of ’70s funk and soul (including a collaboration with the beloved Earth, Wind and Fire) with her sharp songwriting and eclectic orchestral arrangements. A triple threat — she sings, writes and dances better than nearly any other artist — Monét is sure to reach new superstar heights this year. 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at House of Blues Chicago, 329 N. Dearborn St.; tickets $110 (17+) at livenation.com

Singer-songwriter Liz Phair in Los Angeles in 2019.

Liz Phair: Musically, Liz Phair has gone through a couple of sonic iterations. Her most famous and influential, surrounding the release of her debut album, “Exile in Guyville,” will be celebrated as part of her latest tour, appropriately titled the “Guyville Tour.” As part of this cross-country series of shows, Phair will perform her masterpiece album debut in its entirety as well as additional fan favorites. A truly cross-generational and underrated icon, witnessing Phair in such a unique live show setting should make for a special concert experience. 8 p.m. Nov. 18 at The Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State St.; tickets $69.50 at ticketmaster.com

Ms. Lauryn Hill and the Fugees: You are not wrong to feel weary about a Lauryn Hill concert. Past live shows have shown how Hill is not the most reliable performer, particularly when it comes to taking the stage at a reasonable hour. However, this critic saw Hill earlier this year at the Ravinia Festival and was effectively blown away by both her showmanship and the effortless construction of her live show. With a robust and lively band accompanying her, Hill breezed through her iconic debut album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” and dazzled audiences. Hill will likely continue to delight concertgoers with this latest series of shows in celebration of her debut album’s 25th anniversary. The Fugees, Hill’s original rap group that introduced the star to the world through hits like “Ready or Not” and “Killing Me Softly” will also play during this sure-to-be memorable show. 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28, United Center, 1901 W. Madison St.; tickets $55.50-$1,515.50 at ticketmaster.com

Doja Cat performs at the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California.

Doja Cat/Ice Spice: In another world, Doja Cat and Ice Spice would have musically aligned this year in the same vein of infectious, radio-friendly, pop-rap music. But as of late, Doja Cat has stepped out of the norm, both musically and visually. It’s been something of a public struggle for Doja Cat, who has actively antagonized fans who first clamored for the singer off the success of singles like “Kiss Me More” and “Woman” from her last studio album. But fans who have been listening to her music since before she crossed over to the mainstream and racked up Grammy Awards will still find much to enjoy in her latest singles, which focus more on kinetic flow than keen melodies. Ice Spice, a rising star making light and rhythmically kitschy rap music with collaborators like Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, opens. 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at the United Center, 1901 W. Madison St.; tickets $105-$1,750 at ticketmaster.com

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Chicago the band plays together onstage.

We have a soft spot for bands named after places.

There’s classic rockers America , Boston and Kansas , country stalwarts Alabama and indie veterans Phoenix .

You can’t forget the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Chicago though.

The band that brought the world love ballads like “If You Leave Me Now,” “You’re The Inspiration” and “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” as well as FM radio staples “25 or 6 to 4,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is” and “Saturday In The Park” will bring their classics to venues all over North America this year.

That includes quite a few stops in the Big Apple and Garden State.

On April 15, Chicago will play Atlantic City’s Etess Arena at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino . Following that big night, the group will perform at Staten Island’s St. George Theatre on April 16, Morristown, NJ’s Mayo Performing Arts Center on April 18 and April 19 and Verona, NY’s Turning Stone Resort and Casino Event Center on April 22.

Then, two months later they return to the Northeast for gigs at Rochester, NY’s Kodak Center on June 21, Westbury, NY’s NYCB Theatre on June 23, Farmingville, NY’s Amphitheater at Bald Hill on June 24 and New Brunswick’s State Theatre on June 25 .

And we’re just getting started. The band has over 60 concerts scheduled this year .

Not bad for a band that’s been touring since 1967.

Best of all, some tickets are going for as low as $29 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Want to see Chicago live?

Here’s everything you need to know about how you can make that happen this year.

All prices were found at the time of publication and are subject to fluctuation.

Chicago 2023 tour schedule

The self-described “rock and roll band with horns” will first fulfill the final dates of their Las Vegas residency at the Venetian Theater from Feb. 24 through March 11.

Soon after that, they’ll hit the road for huge concerts in Baltimore on April 21, Milwaukee on May 9, Kansas City on May 26, Cincinnati on July 6 and Phoenix on Aug. 18.

As of now, the final show booked for Chicago in 2023 will take place at Boise’s Idaho Botanical Garden on Sept. 3.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

Chicago new music

56 years deep into their storied career, Chicago is still creating.

In July 2022, the band featuring original members Robert Lamm (keyboard, vocals), Lee Loughnane (trumpet, flugelhorn, backing vocals), James Pankow (trombone, backing vocals), Walter Parazaider (saxophones, flute, clarinet, backing vocals) and new lead vocalist Neil Donell released their 26th studio album “Born For This Moment.”

Comprised of 14 songs, the record is a jazzy throwback to the band’s signature, lively sound.

And for our money, “Our New York Time” is a standout track that wouldn’t be out of place on one of the group’s classic ’60s and ’70s albums.

If you want to hear the horn-heavy record for yourself, you can find it here .

Chicago set list

Chicago closed their 2022 tour in November and appears to have had a fairly standard set list at each show.

Still, they don’t phone it in — the band regularly plays 25+ songs when they perform.

While we can’t predict what you’ll hear when you see the band live in 2023, here’s what they played live last year courtesy of Set List FM .

01.) “Introduction” 02.) “Dialogue (Part I & II)” 03.) “Questions 67 & 68” 04.) “Call on Me” 05.) “Wake Up Sunshine” 06.) “(I’ve Been) Searchin’ So Long” 07.) “Mongonucleosis” 08.) “If This Is Goodbye” 09.) “If You Leave Me Now” 10.) “Make Me Smile” 11.) “So Much to Say, So Much to Give” 12.) “Anxiety’s Moment” 13.) “West Virginia Fantasies” 14.) “Colour My World” 15.) “To Be Free” 16.) “Now More Than Ever” 17.) “Alive Again” 18.) “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” 19.) “Old Days” 20.) “Hard Habit to Break” 21.) “You’re the Inspiration” 22.) “Beginnings” 23.) “I’m a Man” (The Spencer Davis Group cover) (With percussion duet) 24.) “Just You ‘n’ Me” 25.) “Hard to Say I’m Sorry / Get Away” 26.) “Saturday in the Park” 27.) “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day”

28.) “Free” 29.) “25 or 6 to 4”

For those who would like to see what Chicago played way back when they were The Chicago Transit Authority in the late 60s before they shortened their name to Chicago, you can find all set lists from their history dating back to 1967 here .

Classic rockers on tour in 2023

The Reader ’s Guide to Record Store Day 2024

Record Store Day 2024 is here represented by a pic of a hand flipping through LPs in a bin at the since-closed Dave's Records

This Record Store Day, which arrives on Saturday, April 20, Republic Records is doing its best to make sure you can buy a newly pressed record by Vermont singer-songwriter Noah Kahan. Republic (part of Universal Music Group) has pressed 15,000 copies of Kahan’s second album, 2021’s I Was / I Am , which is not the LP that contains his breakout single, “Stick Season.” That song, from his 2022 album of the same name, will be available on another “RSD First” release, performed by Olivia Rodrigo on the BBC Radio 1 program Live Lounge . Rodrigo’s cover of Kahan’s hit is the A side of a colored seven-inch , also pressed in an edition of 15,000, with Kahan covering Rodrigo’s “Lacy” on the flip. Special RSD releases are supposed to draw people into brick-and-mortar record stores, but with 30,000 copies, Kahan has twice as many as any other artist—hardly the best way to cast a wide net.

Record Store Day launched in 2008 to support independent record stores. That mission technically still holds, but it’s been diluted by the growth of gimmicky major-label RSD releases. U.S. fans bought 49.61 million vinyl albums last year, according to Forbes —an increase of 14 percent from 2022. But 7 percent of those albums were by Kahan’s labelmate Taylor Swift. The Kahan RSD pressings are a symptom of a larger problem. Major labels have overwhelmed vinyl plants and caused monthslong delays for independent artists—who rely more heavily on merch sales at concerts to help cover the increasing costs of touring .

I love going to record stores because they’re the best place to find independently released music. I have mixed feelings about RSD, especially now that major labels are capitalizing on it. The independent music culture that RSD is supposed to support exists year-round, of course, so Kahan’s new records aren’t entirely a bad thing—if they help a shop keep its doors open or bring in a young fan who becomes a lifelong supporter of independent record stores, that’s still a net win.

I’ve been helping put together the Reader ’s RSD guides for more than ten years . We declared that RSD had jumped the shark way back in 2012 , but reminding fellow Chicagoans about the bounty of local indie record stores remains worthwhile. I like calling up shops and learning what’s new, and I’d do it even if RSD didn’t exist.

Anecdotally, fewer local stores care to make a production of RSD the way they did in the past. This year they’re hosting fewer in-store performances than ever before, and some folks sound worn down by the process of managing RSD—not just handling a big spike in new inventory but also answering nonstop calls about which variant of one or another gimmicky major-label release will be in stock.

That said, some shop owners remain just as excited about RSD as they were years ago, and that gets me excited. I’d be stoked that Aluminum Group are performing at Pinwheel Records no matter what day it was. I don’t usually need much of a nudge to go record shopping, but RSD festivities can still get me to visit a particular store that might not be on my usual beat.

Below you’ll find an alphabetized list and map of Chicagoland record shops, including several that aren’t participating in RSD. I tried to be comprehensive, so please use it as a directory for your music shopping year-round.

In the year since I compiled our 2023 RSD guide with Micco Caporale , there have been a few changes. Ukrainian Village shop Wild Prairie Vinyl & Vintage closed for good last June , so it’s no longer on the map. I’m including Katalyst Coffee Lounge & Music Gallery in Hegewisch, even though it’s temporarily closed to address building-code issues—with any luck, this map will still be current when it reopens! Oak Park CD retailer Chicago Digital is on there too, despite being closed on weekends. I’ve also added the second locations of Signal and Shuga and some other newly opened shops.

Please note that some shops are open early or late for RSD—if it’s just an ordinary day, you might want to look up their hours before you visit. In any case, I hope you find music that moves you.
