On 16 April 1746, the final Jacobite Rising came to a brutal head in one of the most harrowing battles in British history.

Jacobite supporters, seeking to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British thrones, gathered to fight the Duke of Cumberland’s government troops. It was the last pitched battle on British soil and, in less than an hour, around 1,600 men were slain – 1,500 of them Jacobites.

The richly researched, stimulating and sensitive Culloden Visitor Centre, which stands beside the battlefield, features artefacts from both sides of the battle and interactive displays that reveal the background to the conflict. It is both a monument and a guide to a pivotal day in history.

Glen Affric - Ancient pines, shimmering lochs, and steep mountains abound in ‘Scotland’s most beautiful glen’.

Your journey

7,000 years ago, Scotland was covered in rainforests. But climatic conditions and human activity transformed the country into a mix of mighty castles, bare mountains, and reputable cities. Yet, there’s a place that’s almost unchanged. A small region that hid away and conserved the ancient wilderness.

They call it Glen Affric.

145 square kilometres of forest canopies, rivers, stags, and snow-crested mountains.

On this tour, you take the single-track lanes through a Caledonian pine forest to one of the best walks in the region.

But that’s not all, you also get a chance to learn about the last battle fought on British soil at Culloden and discover a Bronze Age tomb at Clava Cairns.

Join this day-tour and explore one of Scotland’s most untouched landscapes.

Tour Details

Students, seniors over 60, and children between 5 and 15 (unfortunately, we don't carry children under 5 years old).

  • Pack your waterproof clothing and walking shoes
  • Some attraction tickets can be purchased in advance when you book your tour. You’ll have the option to add at check-out. Other attractions will not be available to book beforehand, instead you can purchase those while on tour.
  • Transport in a 16 seat Mercedes mini-coach
  • Air conditioning as standard
  • The stories and services of an English-speaking driver-guide
  • Attraction entry tickets

You first venture to the ancient burial site of Clava Cairns. This Bronze Age ‘graveyard’ has survived four millennia and is a great spot to take atmospheric photos. They say the stone circle here was the inspiration for the Craigh na Dun time portal in the Outlander books.

You then visit Culloden*, one of the most important locations in Scottish history. It was here that a 60-year series of uprisings finally ended in a tumultuous battle. You can explore the visitor centre and pay tribute to those who lost their lives at the last ever battle fought on British soil.

You ramble along to Glen Affric and stop off for walks amongst the indigenous Caledonian pine trees. You get the chance to enjoy views over Loch Affric and the mountains beyond, and your driver-guide ensures you go to the best waterfalls and photo spots throughout the afternoon.

Following this, you have the chance to stretch your legs and explore the historic ruins of Beauly Priory. 13th-century French monks called this religious site 'beau lieu', which means 'beautiful place'.

Your final journey takes you along the shores of Loch Ness and back to the centre of Inverness for the early evening.

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

Itinerary & map, culloden battlefield.

Culloden Battlefield

The tour starts in the centre of Inverness, where you will board our luxury mini-coach and depart at 9am. After a 10 minute drive we will arrive at our first historic sight of the day; Culloden Battlefield.

The Battle of Culloden took place on 16th April 1746 and was hugely significant, as it was the final battle of the 1745 Jacobite Rising, and the last battle to be held on British soil. The battle itself was a short but extremely bloody one, with 1500 Jacobite troops being killed or wounded in around one hour, due to the flat, boggy ground being entirely unsuitable terrain for their previously effective charging manoeuvres. The opposing government forces were victorious and the Jacobite leader, Bonnie Prince Charlie, fled. This victory for the Duke of Cumberland’s forces paved the way for the destruction of the Gaelic language, clan culture and indeed every aspect of Highland life, prompting mass migration of Highlanders to the new world.

We will spend one hour at Culloden Battlefield. Your guide will provide a 30 minute walking tour of the site, bringing the poignant battle of this windswept moor to life.

Clava Cairns

Clava Cairns

Clava Cairns is an exceptionally well-preserved group of prehistoric burial cairns, which were built around 4000 years ago. There are a whole range of interesting historical structures to explore, including: passage graves; ring cairns; cup-marked kerb stones; and a plethora of standing stones.

This sight is captivating, and there are a couple of interpretation boards to explain it, but the tour provided by your guide is incredibly valuable here. He will explain the significance of the stones’ alignment, the importance of the sun throughout the year, and how all of this can inform us of the beliefs of past societies, and their understanding of the world.

For Outlander fans, this site might just be the fictional Craigh na Dun, where Claire travels back in time from 1945 to 1743. Feel free to quiz your guide on all things Outlander and, of course, beware of the split stone buzzing!

We will spend 30 minutes here and your guide will provide a 20 minute tour of the site.

Beautiful Highland Scenery

Beautiful Highland Scenery

One of the highlights of this short journey is Clava Viaduct.  This impressively curved viaduct was opened in 1898 and, at 549 metres in length, is the longest masonry viaduct in Scotland.

We will stop to take an uninterrupted photo of its impressive form and the surrounding green countryside.

Cawdor Castle

Cawdor Castle

Despite many fortifications and alterations over the years, Cawdor Castle is remarkably well-preserved, giving a wonderful impression of how the landed gentry would have lived back in the 15th Century. Unusually for a Scottish castle, it remains in the family, with the Dowager Countess Cawdor, stepmother of the 7th Earl of Cawdor, residing there over the winter months.

The audio guide provides an interesting and entertaining overview of each of the castle’s 12 principal rooms, which contain collections of 17th Century tapestries, fine art, antique furniture and sculptures. Every object has a story behind it and this is no more so than in “The Thorn Tree Room”, where you hear the story of the legendary tree which the castle was built around back in 1372 and which, remarkably, still exists there today!

After you have completed the audio tour we would recommend heading outside to the immaculate gardens: The Flower Garden is a formal garden designed in the 18th Century and featuring lavender borders and yew tree hedges; The Walled Garden features exotic plants, a maze, a Knot Garden and a hidden Paradise Garden; The Wild Garden is a hidden delight which leads to 5 miles of nature trails in ancient oak woodlands. For those who are bringing children, these trails are a wonderful place to let them run around and play!

We would recommend that you stop off at the Courtyard Cafe, which offers delicious lunches (be sure to leave room for their tasty home baking!)

There are also three gift shops here, one of which sells a wonderful selection of classic Scottish souvenirs unique to the castle.

You will have around two hours at Cawdor Castle. Admission to the castle is not included in the tour price and is payable on the day (adults £13.50, see FAQ section for all other prices)

After departing from the castle at 1.30pm we will arrive back into Inverness at 2pm.

*

How much is the entrance fee to Cawdor Castle? +

Entrance to Cawdor Castle is not included in the tour price and is payable on the day.

2021 prices are as follows;

Adults – £13.50

Seniors/Students – £12.50

Child (age 6 – 15) – £7.50

Tour 3) Loch Ness, Inverness & Culloden Battlefield

On leaving the port of Invergordon this tour will take you south along the western shore of the Cromarty Firth, and through the historic market town of Dingwall, the centre in the northern Scottish Highlands for all things agricultural, over many years.

Your tour will then continue through the pretty villages of Maryburgh, Conon Bridge and Muir of Ord, before arriving in the beautiful village of Beauly.

You will have some time here on your own to browse in the classic little shops located along the picturesque main street, and to wander around the ancient ruined Beauly Priory.

On reboarding the tour vehicle, the tour will turn off the main road, and on to a scenic minor route through some beautiful heather moorland, and on to the picturesque village of Drumnadrochit by legendary Loch Ness.

The tour will then travel north along the western shore of the world famous loch before pausing for a photo stop, and on to spend time in the small Scottish Highland capital city of Inverness.

Once in the city centre you will have ample time on your own to explore all that’s on offer there.

The compact city centre has a considerable variety of retail outlets, you may be interested in visiting the traditional Victorian Market.

Should you wish to find somewhere for lunch, there is plenty of choice for all tastes.

For those with an interest in the best Scotch Whiskies, a visit to Inverness would not be complete without paying a visit to The Whisky Shop, one of the finest retailers of Scotland’s iconic drink in the Scottish Highlands.

In the shop you will see for sale hundreds of different bottlings, many of which are exclusive to themselves.

The experienced assistants will only be too happy to assist you with their wealth of knowledge.

On reboarding the tour coach, the tour will travel 6 miles to the east of Inverness, where on high ground overlooking the city and the hills and mountains of the northern Scottish Highland mainland, guests will sense the bleak desolation felt by the Jacobite army of Charles Edward Stuart on the 16th of April 1746 as the superior British government forces commanded by Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland approached…the horror that ensued was to go down in history as the Battle of Culloden, the final confrontation of the campaign historically known as the Jacobite rising, the purpose of which was for the Gaels to regain the British throne. The futile confrontation fought on Culloden Moor was the last pitched battle fought on British soil.

The tour will visit the Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, where the horror of what occurred on that afternoon so long ago is brought home with incredible realism.

Afterwards your tour will return north to your ship at Invergordon.

Visiting Culloden Battlefield: what you need to know

When in the Scottish Highlands, or based in Inverness , visiting Culloden Battlefield is often high on the list of those who are interested in history or those who have Clan relatives who may have fought.

Having grown up in Scotland I’d always heard of the Battle of Culloden and I also knew of the term Jacobites. It was mentioned a lot, but I didn’t really know a lot about the history there, it was definitely a weak point in my education.

On our travels around Scotland we would see lots of places that had a connection to the Jacobites. I decided that I really needed to learn a little bit more about it so I could appreciate the sites we were seeing – Culloden Battlefield is the perfect place to do that.

This article probably contains affiliate links. This means that if you buy or book after clicking, I may get a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks!

If you’re looking to add this in to your trip to Scotland I hope that this guide will help you when you visit Culloden Battlefield and that it helps makes your time there really special.

Tour from Inverness

This inexpensive tour from Inverness includes entrance to Culloden Battlefield and also explores Clava Cairns and the Glen Affric area. Take away the hassle of public transport and enjoy a knowledgable guide as well!

Visiting Culloden Battlefield

It’s a cold and desolate place with the wind blowing around.  Culloden Moor is a wide open space and that only lends to the sombre feeling when visiting.  Visitors are quietly walking around, mostly attached to an audio guide as if they are on the phone and hearing awful news, but they are listening and learning about what happened back in April 1746.

The Jacobites fought a short battle here and suffered catastrophic losses and in the end defeat from the English.  It’s an important battle for many reasons and the aftermath meant the demise of the Highland clans as they were and of the Jacobite cause.

Culloden is a pilgrimage for many people who have Scottish ancestry to find and pay respect to their relatives who gave the ultimate sacrifice for what they believed in.  Many others are visiting now due a resurgence in interest from the Outlander television series on Amazon.

Outlander at Culloden Moor For many, the television series of Outlander piqued an interest in the Scottish clans in the 1700s and the time of the Jacobites. The lead to the Battle of Culloden is hinted at throughout the beginning of the series and the end of season 2 and beginning of season 3 have the actual story unfold. When Claire visits the Battlefield in the future she finds the clan marker for Clan Fraser. This is actually at Culloden Battlefield. There are many Outlander filming locations in Scotland but this is probably one of the most sombre.

Political background

The Jacobite Rising and history around it was always a bit of a gap in my knowledge – it can be quite complicated so if you’re planning on going definitely take some time to familiarise yourself with the basics of what was going on in the country at that time so you can read the exhibits and really understand it all.

This is quite a brief overview of the time and hopefully I have it right!

The Jacobites were supporters of the Stuart claim to the throne.  Jacobus is the latin for James and is where the name comes from.

James II of England (James VII of Scotland) was King from 1685 until he was overthrown in what is known as the Glorious Revolution in 1688.  As was quite common at the time, it had lots to do with religion – James II was a catholic but he had 2 daughters who had been raised Protestant.

His eldest daughter was heir and the country felt happy that a Protestant would soon be back.  This changed when James’s second wife gave birth to a son who would be catholic – another James (later to be known as the Old Pretender).

James faced uprisings, notably from the husband of his daughter Mary – William of Orange, and he fled to France allegedly dropping the Great Seal of the Realm in the Thames.

The dropping of the seal led to Parliament basically saying he had abdicated and so his daughter Mary became Queen and ruled alongside William bringing the country back to Church of England rule.  There was also a new rule made that no catholic would ever be able to be King ever again!

James continued to live in exile in France and when he died the French recognised his son as James III, King of England as did some small pockets of loyal supporters – what would become known as Jacobites.

There were many uprisings made by him and his supporters, especially when George I came to the throne.  They wanted the Stuart line, what they considered to be the rightful heirs to the crown, back on the throne.

Burial Cairn at Culloden Battlefield

What happened at Culloden – a brief history

In 1745 another uprising of the Jacobites began.  It was led by the James III son Charles Edward Stuart, otherwise known as Bonnie Prince Charlie or the New Pretender.  He gathered highland clans together in support of the his father’s Stuart claim to the throne and they formed an army that invaded England in late 1745.

The invasion was good for the Jacobites in terms of morale but didn’t really achieve much and they returned to Scotland.  The English Government then sent troops to Scotland under the Duke of Cumberland, arriving in Aberdeen and a battle was set for Culloden.  The English were well rested and outnumbered the Jacobites considerably.

On the day of the battle itself the Jacobites suffered terribly.  The battle only lasted an hour but they lost around 2000 men.  Some clans were completely wiped out and many of those that were left were captured by the English.

It saw the end of the realistic hopes of the Stuart line coming back – the Hanover line of the Royal family and the Georgian era had begun and was here to stay.

Practical Information for a Culloden Moor & Battlefield visit

What is there to do at culloden moor.

The Battlefield is the main thing to see here but the National Trust for Scotland has also created an amazing visitors centre with exhibits, information and visuals to help you understand what was going on at the time.

Inside the visitor centre you can learn all about the lead up to the battle and the history of the politics at the time.  It can be a little overwhelming and I know I struggled at the time to know what was going on.

Take your time round the exhibits and do ask any of the staff if you have questions and they’ll be sure to help.  I couldn’t take as much time as I needed because I had our kids with us and they didn’t feel the need to read everything!

While walking around the Battlefield I really encourage you to get one of the audio guides that the National Trust has.  It really helps you to understand what you’re looking at and takes you on a journey of what happened on the day as well as giving an overview of what can be seen now.

On the battlefield you can see many of the clan markers that show where the many members of the highland clans were buried along with a large cairn.  There’s also a small marker for the dead of the English.

18th century cottage at Culloden Battlefield

New this year is also a refurbished 18th century cottage that you can look round and see how people lived at the time.

When you’re done there’s a nice cafe and shop to pick up some more books to learn or perhaps a souvenir.

I’d allow a couple of hours at least for a visit but if you’re really interested in the history then perhaps a little more would be good.

While in the area be sure to check out the ancient Clava Cairns site, just a mile or so down the road from the battlefield.

Is Culloden Battlefield kid friendly?

While the whole of Culloden Battlefield site is child friendly, that does come with some caveats. They have some workbooks for children to colour in and find answers to questions in as well as dressing up areas so they do really well in including kids.

While saying that do remember that this is about a battle and keep an eye on sensitive kids.

There was one film we saw that felt a little bit violent and my daughter still remembers that to this day! She’s not particularly sensitive but really remembers this film.

Just bear in mind the exhibitions are not all aimed at children and so they might find some aspects distressing.

What is the cost

Culloden Moor Battlefield is managed by the National Trust for Scotland.  Members can visit for free – if you’re looking to be a member, it’s definitely worth the cost and you can see more details here .

Can members of National Trust in England get free entry? Yes! It’s worth knowing for anyone who is a member of National Trust in their own country, that there might be a reciprocal agreement for entry. For example, I’m a member for National Trust in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and that would allow me free entrance here too. Other countries that have agreements are Canada, New Zealand, Australia and a few more

Ticket prices for non members (correct as at March 2023):

  • Adult – £14
  • Family – £30
  • One adult family – £25
  • Concession – £11

Tickets can be bought on the day.

There is also a charge for the car park.  Again members of the NTS can park for free but non members are charged £2.

How to get to Culloden Moor from Inverness

Culloden isn’t too far from the main Highland city of Inverness, only about 5 miles so getting there by car is really simple.  The postcode you need is IV2 5EU.

Buses go from the centre of Inverness.  You want Number 5 which will be going in the direction of Nairn and it takes around 35 – 40 mins.  Catch it from the bus stop outside the Eastgate Shopping Centre.

Being so close a taxi might be a good option if you want ease but don’t have your own transport.

There are also some tours that depart from Inverness so if you’re staying there they could be a good idea to take in some of the other sites in the area while not needing your own transport.

Inverness to Loch Ness

From your place of stay in Inverness we will travel towards Loch Ness , with plenty of opportunities for photos at some of the most beautiful vantage points the loch has to offer on our Loch Ness tour from Inverness.

Urquhart Castle and onwards to Beauly Priory

From there we move towards the famous Urquhart Castle and its visitor centre. The castle is a truly romantic ruin, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the loch, and surrounded on all sides by waters over 600-feet deep, where the legendary Loch Ness Monster is said to make her home. Take your time wandering the historic ruins and learn more about its amazing history , before the tour picks up again, this time towards Beauly Priory, a beautiful ancient monastery that now lies in ruins but retains an air of reverence and mystery.

From Beauly Priory it’s the tour picks up again, this time east towards Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre.

Culloden famously played host to the bloody Battle of Culloden, the outcome of which had ramifications far outside the local area and is intensively documented at the visitor centre. Get up close and personal with the history of the battle with artefacts, re-enactments and talks by local historians , before heading the short distance to Clava Cairns, an ancient bronze-age cemetery.

This deeply sacred place within the landscape of the Highlands is steeped in history , with the first usage of the site thought to date back over 4000 years. Set within a beautiful forested area, there is evidence that ancient peoples returned here again and again; there are even the ruins of a medieval chapel here. The Clava Cairns serves as the inspiration for the fictitious Craigh na Dun standing stones in the book and TV series Outlander , in fact, the famous “cleft stone” that transports the main character Claire back in time can be found here.

The tour then heads towards St. Andrew’s Cathedral , a beautiful cathedral church dating back to 1869 located near the centre of the city. The Anglican Cathedral is the most northerly in the UK, and is an excellent example of local architecture and the Gothic style. Take some time to admire the beautiful stained glass windows and intricately carved stonework.

Finally we will take some time to relax in the tranquil surrounds of Ness Islands , a group of wooded islands close to the centre of Inverness connected by suspension bridges. Here you can reflect on your adventure before being dropped off back at your place of stay.

Full Tour Itinerary

This popular open-top double-decker bus tour gives an insight into the history of Inverness , known as the Capital of the Highlands. Plan your day from the top of a double-decker bus, with 360-degree panoramic views of Inverness and the surrounding countryside.

The tour will take you from the original street between Castle and Kirk, with the oldest building Abertarff House , to the recently completed Highland Archive Centre, by the banks of the River Ness.

See Inverness Castle, standing guard over the city. It's the latest of 5 fortresses through the centuries that have had many famous visitors, including McBeth, Robert the Bruce, Mary, Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Not all of them were welcome!

Discover the city's many churches, including St Andrews Cathedral, probably one of local architect Dr Alexander Ross's finest buildings.

Leaving the city centre behind, the tour takes in Tomnahurich Hill and the Caledonian Canal , where you can hop off to enjoy a cruise on Loch Ness. A little later, see the flight of 5 locks at Muirtown constructed in 1822 by Thomas Telford to bring the Caledonian Canal to sea level.

Take to higher ground for incredible panoramic views of Kessock Bridge, The Black Isle and the Inverness Firth out to Fort George.

The final section of the tour takes you along the river-side then beneath Inverness Castle to see Flora MacDonald's statue, the 3 Graces, then along General Wade's road by Bellfield Park to Holm Mills shopping village.

Customer reviews overall rating:.

I think it might have been longer. What my family needed but had a hard time finding was a tour that took us beyond Iverness -- perhaps out as far as Chanonry Point. The tour and the route were good for what was supplied; I think my family might have benefited from an expanded service, but that may not be part of your company's overall goal. Thank you to the driver and all we met there though: Inverness is a wonderful place tand I would recommend this destination and tour to anyone.

When I booked the tour on line I was informed that the bus would leave at 10 am. After standing for 30 minutes the bus finally arrived and the driver informed us that the time of the bus had been altered. Should people who had booked the trip on line not been informed of this? Needless to say the bus driver could not have been more helpful and pleasant. His name was Sammy.

The Best Things to do in Inverness Scotland

H eading to scotland and wondering what to do in inverness this city is full of ancient history and amazing sites. don’t miss these awesome things to do in inverness scotland..

When planning my trip to Ireland , I decided to take a quick flight to Scotland . My favorite thing about being in Europe is that it’s so inexpensive to fly around the continent . You can easily visit both countries with this Ireland and Scotland itinerary . I knew that I wanted to visit the Scottish highlands.

My ancestors are from the Isle of Skye , and I wanted to learn more about them and my ancestral home. I planned to visit Inverness as a half way point between Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye , but I ended up falling in love with the city and surrounding area!

Home to Shakespeare’s infamous MacBeth and the stage for the Jacobite uprising and final defeat, Inverness will allow you to connect with the past like nowhere else. I’ve listed my favorite things to do in Inverness Scotland. I hope you take the time to visit these as they are true national treasures!

Culloden battlefield.

Visit the windswept moor where the Jacobites made their final stand. This National Trust Site is beautifully done with a Inverness museum that walks you through the Jacobite uprising of 1745 and the events that lead up to the battle on Culloden Moor, a pivotal event in Scottish and British history.

Be sure to watch the 360 reenactment video of the Battle of Culloden and find the clan stones out on the moor. I recommend booking your ticket to Culloden in advance.

Clava Cairns

Originally built to house the dead, the Clava Cairns are about 4,000 years old. The cemetery remained a sacred place for millennia. You can visit the stone circles and mounds for free. They are only about a 5 minute drive from Culloden Battlefield.

Just a few miles from Inverness, Loch Ness is the second largest loch in Scotland and famous for its supposed occupant, the Loch Ness Monster, or “Nessie.” Make sure you visit Loch Ness and see if you can catch a glimpse for yourself!

Be sure to take a cruise so that you can take in all the beautiful views and hopefully find Nessie!

Urquhart Castle

For fantastic views of Loch Ness and an awesome history lesson, head to Urquhart Castle. Wander around the ancient ruins of this ancient castle that has been there since the 13th century.

Explore Inverness City

Many people will stay in Inverness and use it as a home base to see the highlands, Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye , but don’t skip exploring this beautiful city with it’s old stone buildings and a castle to boot! Be sure to see Inverness Castle, the Old High Church, Victorian Market, and St. Andrews Cathedral.

I recommend taking a walking tour of the old city centre to help you learn the Scottish history of this incredible city.

Have Dinner on a Family Farm

I highly recommend having dinner with my friends Kacey and James. Enjoy a lovely evening with this Scottish Crofting family where you an enjoy real homemade Scottish food and hospitality, see the animals on the Croft (small farm), and enjoy learning about Scottish folklore during a whiskey tasting.

This is a great family friendly option and feels like visiting old friends. Book ASAP as they fill up fast. It’s quite pricey, but for the great food and unforgettable experience, I think it’s a worthy splurge. Whatever you do in Inverness, it’s sure to have you leaving Scotland with a feeling of connection to its ancient past and unforgettable memories.

If you’re seeing more of Scotland, be sure to visit Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye . And while you’re there, take a cheap flight over to Ireland!
